After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon

Description

He said he'd be back. This time experience T2 like never before! Go EXTREME with the best picture and sound ever! ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER returns as the Terminator in this explosive action-adventure spectacle. Now he's one of the good guys, sent back in time to protect John Connor, the boy destined to lead the freedom fighters of the future. LINDA HAMILTON reprises her role as Sarah Connor, John's mother, a quintessential survivor who has been institutionalized for her warning of the nuclear holocaust she knows is inevitable. Together, the threesome must find a way to stop the ultimate enemy - the T-1000, the most lethal Terminator ever created. Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron ("The Terminator," "Aliens," "Titanic), this visual tour de force is also a touching story of survival.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate and Extreme DVD's the way to go.......2007-06-28

This is the second movie from James Cameron that I consider to be among the best science fiction films ever. Sequels rarely stack up to their predecessor, but this film actually outdoes the original Terminator, which is saying a lot considering how good the original was. Terminator 2 has everything you need to make an excellent sci-fi including a fantastic premise, very strong well-rounded character development, groundbreaking special effects, and the kind of story that would make Rod Serling proud. If there is ever a sci-fi movie that gives you all the best the genre has to give this is it.

One of the big deals about this movie is that it's the one that introduces to the world CG animation that actually seems to interact with a live environment as well as the morphing technique unique to computer animation. While Terminator 2 wasn't the first to do it (The Abyss gets the credit for all that... another Jim Cameron film) they do get the credit for popularizing it. Practically everybody uses computer animations with live action in one form or another today. Even over a decade later the CG effects still measure up and even outdo stuff that's still being created today.

On top of the new CG stuff you get plenty of other tried and true special effects that will knock your socks off. The action in this movie is relentless at times and will be sure impress any testosterone junkie out there. There is a lot of exciting gunplay in this movie that includes some killer military hardware too like the awesome 1500 rounds per minute minigun action reminiscent of Predator. Eye candy for those with a short attention span? Check.

If Terminator 2 only had a neato special effects and action it wouldn't be as great as it is. Everything else must work as well. The story in Terminator 2 is deep with the main characters evolving as events happen around them. Even the Terminator robot gets to get some character development. While it's cool to see the action and explosions and stuff what makes the movie really fill out is the fact it delves into several different levels of the human condition. You also get a ton of background details too like who was involved with building Skynet and even a scene with the futuristic battle that John Conner grows up to lead. The theoretical twists in the plot are enough to get the thinkers debating over time paradoxes and stuff like that. Deep and involving storyline for those who prefer quality over pizzazz? Check.

The Terminator robots are as awesome as ever. Not only do you get to see the classic style cyborg bad boy like in the last movie but you also get to see a completely different concept in killer robot technology with the T-1000. The future scene has even more robot coolness to offer, though it's just a little more than what I saw in the last movie (but still sweet!).

The acting is superb as well, which is surprising considering Edward Furlong has absolutely no previous experience in acting. Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton play off each other well. Robert Patrick gives a stunning and eerie performance as the T-1000. The soundtrack takes the original Terminator themes and puts them to new heights. The music truly enhances the movie here.

If the original movie wasn't enough Cameron decided to make an extended cut with almost 20 minutes of new footage. I wouldn't necessarily say the new footage opens up brand new territory for the movie, but I will say the extra scenes do add some extra depth to some of the scenes. A couple of the new scenes flesh out young John Conner's character a little, which is always a good thing. I wouldn't say any incredibly cool scenes were added though there is one with the Terminator that is kinda cool, but the good stuff in that scene has more to do with fleshing out some character development with the humans than cool cyborg tricks. Speaking of cyborg tricks you get the added bonus of seeing a Terminator try to smile. Funny, funny stuff! While I can't say the extended edition is better than the original I will say it does give you more background on the story, and thats always good if you're into that.

With the exception to blu-ray fans there are only two DVD editions you should consider (the rest don't have any special features). The Ultimate Edition and the Extreme Edition. Essentially what you have is a trade off between the two. Neither edition have the same special features. The Extreme edition improved the picture quality slightly while the Ultimate edition has DTS. Here is a breakdown:

Ultimate Edition: You get three versions of the movie. The theatrical release, the director's cut and an extended director's cut via an easter egg (EDC basically includes the deleted scenes). You get three in depth documentaries including one on the Universal Studios 3-D ride. Commentaries from the crew (no James Cameron). Also included are several smaller featurettes covering all aspects of production, tons of storyboards, a 30 page hard cover booklet insert and the screenplay. Not to mention THX certified test signal package for fine tuning your audio set up, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 2.0 and DTS 5.1 for all the audio freaks out there.

Extreme Edition: Two versions of the movie with the director's cut being on the disk and the theatrical trailer as a DVDRom movie (via Windows Media Player... although you can see the theatrical version on the DVD via an easter egg). An audio commentary from director James Cameron and screenwriter William Wisher, very comprehensive text commentaries with over 90 minutes of branching video footage, a 24 minute documentary and a 12 page hard copy booklet insert.

If you have no version of T2 on DVD I would recommend the Ultimate Edition since it has the most features. Although the Extreme Edition is still worthy for its James Cameron commentary track and the excellent text commentary. Since the extras are completely different between the two this might not be a bad double dip if you get them at the current low prices. The blu-ray version has only the theatrical version (no director's cut), but includes the commentaries from BOTH the Ultimate and Extreme editions. I say wait for a better high definition release.

If you haven't seen this movie I strongly recommend it. VERY strongly. You action fans will get plenty of mayhem for your pleasure. You content fans will get rich and full storylines with character drama. You sci-fi purists will get the kind of story you would expect to be reading from someone like Phillip K. Dick. This is required viewing for any sci-fi fan. Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars HD version without DD5.1.......2007-06-19

I bought the DVD in order to watch the Hi-Def version. I already have the older version of the movie, and I've seen it many times over the years. I have an HP laptop running Windows Vista, hooked up to my 50" Panasonic HDTV (1280x720), with the VGA connection. I loaded the disk, and it prompted me to install the InterActual player. Vista warned me that the program has issues with the new operating system. I went ahead, and installed it anyway, then immediately downloaded the newest version from the Internet. It then told me that I needed a DVD decoder that I could buy on their web page. I ignored that message, and went on to play the HD version of the movie. It played OK, after some initial stuttering during the first few screens.

The picture quality was very good, but the audio was not Dolby Digital 5.1, meaning that there is no surround sound. I followed up on the InterActual web page, and they confirmed this. Apparently, Microsoft used some other audio encoding. So, even though the picture quality is better, I chose to watch the lower definition, extended edition in order to get the DD5.1 sound. I find the sound quality is at least as important as the video quality.

The standard definition image is still very good. The nVidia chip set in my laptop does a nice job of upscaling. The 5.1 sound is spectacular as ever. The added minutes in the extended edition don't really add much, but the novelty effect is nice anyway. All in all, I'd say that it is worth the price at under $10.00.

5 out of 5 stars Owes just as much to "Aliens" as it does its predecessor.......2007-06-17

It's no surprise that the editors of "Entertainment Weekly" would choose both "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Aliens" as two of its 25 Best Action Films of all time. Both are sequels that significantly up the special effects ante, along with the body count, and both feature two of the movies most dynamic kick-[...] heroines, Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton" in the former and Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in the latter.

Besides doubling the action of the first, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" also doubles the cyborg quotient by returning Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role that he was born to play (this time as a "good" cyborg) and bringing in a more than equal combatant/foe in the from of the Robert Patrick as an "upgraded" model. The movie adds an element of surprise in the form of the much smaller (and less developed) Patrick as a superior model to Arnold's character, able to best the strongman in many a scene.

The movie also brings back Earl Boen in an expanded role as the befuddled "Dr. Silberman." He brings needed comic relief in a film that is short on words but long on action sequences.

James Cameron may have felt on "top of the world" a decade later with his Oscar-winning "Titanic" but it is for the first two "Terminator" films that he probably made his greatest cinematic impact.

3 out of 5 stars High Def does not work in Vista.......2007-06-08

The movie is great, great package with lots of good features. However the WMP video could not be played at all. Some may experience this and some may not. You will to install the Interactual player to view the WMHD version.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Shed Some Light.......2007-05-27

i love this film being a big film buff and all but also i've noticed that the price is fantastic and is even more cheaper in certain stores, anyway when i bought the dvd and popped it in the dvd player i was amazed with the picture pure high def 1080p i mean i baught this movie for 5.50 and it's in high definition, the blu-ray version is like 20 or 25 bucks so i'm wonderin why make a whole nother disc-format and just make standard dvd's in high def i mean perhaps u can't fit any special features but why not just make them double sided dvd's and put the special features on the other side instead of movie companies using 2 discs and waste money. i believe this will prevail and end the war against blu-ray vs. hd-dvd and just keep blank blu-ray discs for information purposes. I mean i love blu-ray and i want one so bad but u gotta pay up the nose just to get one, at least players are becoming more and more affordable but i dont want to have to convert all my 700 dvds to high def formats. it's interesting how Artisan backed this movie and now it doesnt exist anymore as soon as the high def battle started, Lionsgate is now mastering all thier old movies and they back up blu-ray 100%, it just makes you think what coinsidences emerged with all this, terminator 2 on standard dvd is in high def (for us in the US anyway) it cost me 5.50 its just a big mystery to me...

3 out of 5 stars Go for the Ultimate or Extreme edition. .......2007-06-22

I love this movie, it is one of my all time favorites. I recently upgraded to a Blu-Ray player and this is one of the first movies I bought. I am hugely disappointed in the quality and features of this BD. It honestly sux. I went from the Ultimate edition to this BD edition and took a huge step back. The quality is about the same as the Ultimate or Extreme editions and there are no bonus features. This was one of the big movies I bought a Blu-ray player for, so you can understand my disappointment. I will probably sell it and re-buy the Ultimate or Extreme edition. I recommend waiting to see if they come out with an Ultimate or Extreme edition on Blu-ray before buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars im happy with this version.......2007-04-21

it may not be the extended version with cut scenes. I will say i watched this movie on digital cable and compared it to the blu0ray version and trust me there is a big difference more colors no smearing of facial features like on the cable version and the sound is incredible. If your hdtv sucks then blu-ray version may suffer if the difference is not noticable its your tv
and not the blu-ray disc. This is a must have for terminator fans!

2 out of 5 stars Upscaled DVD at Best!!!.......2007-04-18

High hopes were set in place for this blu-ray release, and I have to admit I am sadly dissapointed.

The transfer is only a 'fraction' above watching a SD DVD version upscaled, which is a real shame.

Buy at your own risk, or wait for a much better release, hopefully Director's Cut, remastered and all.

2.5/5 for effort.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie on bluray.......2007-03-25

I bought this movie because I'm a fan and it is one of my top five action movies of all time. I wanted to see this film at it's best on bluray and I was not disappointed. The picture and sound is awsome. The commentary by James Cameron is a treat, one the most interesting commentarys I've listend to. It lacks some of the extras that dvd versions may have contained, but the bluray transfer of of the movie is superior to the dvd version. Finally, I can enjoy a sharp picture on my wide screen.

2 out of 5 stars DVD quality at best.......2007-03-24

Anyone with a upconverting DVD player, or just a Blu-ray / PS3 will get the same quality of picture from the standard DVD. The transfer of this movie would need to be cleaned up digitally before it will be up to what Blu-ray can show. It's truely shocking the difference in quality between the menue footage which is true 1080p and fresh VS the lower grade transfure from the film with no digital clean-up. Anyone with the standard DVD should just save their money.

They've tried Catzilla, a feline so ferocious it can't be euthanized. They've tried booby traps that Rube Goldberg would marvel at. They've even tried Caesar (hilariously played by Christopher Walken), a demented exterminator whose "Squeak Seeker 2000" mouse-cam will infiltrate even the cleverest rodent's secret lair. But the Smuntz brothers Ernie (Nathan Lane) and Lars (British comedian Lee Evans) just can't win against the tenacious mouse that wreaks havoc in the vintage home they've inherited from their father. That's the one-note premise of this chaotic, lavishly produced comedy that starts on a high note and never lets up, eventually leaving the viewer exhausted. The special mouse effects (live-action, animatronic, and computer-generated) are delightful, and the slapstick is frequently ingenious, but the title says it all in a movie that is little more than an elaborate variation of Home Alone. A prime choice for family fun, but it's really just a live-action cartoon that overstays its welcome. It's harmless fun if all you're looking for is a marathon of slapstick gags and pratfalls, and it's notable as the final film appearance of veteran character actor William Hickey, who died in June of 1997, shortly after filming of Mouse Hunt was completed. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars It's like a Cartoon Come to Life.......2007-07-01

Director Gore Verbinski (The Mexican, The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Weather Man) has quite a way with slapstick. I wish he would do more comedies, because this is tons of fun.
People compare it to Home Alone, but it doesn't have that film's pathos, which is fine. Mouse Hunt is more similar to Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and the Warner Brothers cartoons of the 1940's.

Two adult brothers, both down on their luck, inherit an old house that turns out to be valuable. But there's a mouse occupying the place, and the two men want to get rid of it. Not so simple a task, because this particular mouse is resourceful and clever.

You can't help but root for the mouse. There are times when you actually are scared for the poor little guy. He even sleeps in a little mouse bed made out of a small box and cotton. But he's very formidable.

If you or your family have enjoyed the physical comedy of Home Alone, then this is right up your alley. And the production design is great, especially the old factory and the decaying house, with its mouse tunnels and passageways.

My only quam is that the movie is too long at 98 minutes. It drags in the third act, and could've been edited down to 75 minutes. But that's no big deal.

5 out of 5 stars Pest in control.......2007-06-16

For the longest time, live action comedies with animals usually feature dogs. But by the 1990s, robots and computer effects had advanced to the point that the two funniest animal comedies featured a pig and a mouse. This was the less famous of the two, but is every bit as good. The story is simple; two brothers inherit a mansion and try to spruce it up for an auction. Unfortunately for them, a mouse inhabits the mansion and counters their every move. Their game of cat-and-mouse ends with the mansion being destroyed. The movie is a comedy, and like all good comedies, it examines a fundamental human flaw, in this case greed. The greed of the two brothers, their families, and of the various individuals who want to buy their mansion. The mouse itself looks quite real, even in the close-up shots. The style of comedy is a combination of old-fashion slapstick, wry British dialogue, and the occasional dirty joke. But overall, the entire movie is suitable for all ages.

Some notable things about this movie. First, it was the first big outing for Gore Verbinski, who would go on to make Pirates of the Caribbean. Second, one cannot spot a single brand name in this movie. Only one other movie has such a distinction; Dick Tracy. And like Dick Tracy, the viewer really cannot guess the decade in which this movie takes place. For sure it happened in the 20th century, since a television, radio, and automobiles are present. But the dress, hairstyle and even language are nondescript. This movie is fun to watch, and a piece of art; I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Mouse Hunt.......2007-04-05

Mouse Hunt is one very funny movie. The mouse in this movie is well trained for it's comedy skits. This a must see comedy......

5 out of 5 stars Mouse Hunt.......2007-04-03

This movie is great escape footage....I could watch it 20 more times. It mirrors life in that sometimes it's the little, ridiculous things that can bring us down....the lesson: learn to live with it or just let it go if you can't change something....but in the mean time, have a good laugh while two bumbling guys face the challenge of their lives in one little mouse!

You are now entering Interzone, William S. Burroughs's phantasmagorical land of junk, paranoia, and crawly things. Best travel advice: "Exterminate all rational thought." In David Cronenberg's superbly shot, unnerving warp on the Burroughs novel, the novelist himself becomes a main character (played in an implacable monotone by Peter Weller), with elements from Burroughs' life--including the shooting of his wife during a "William Tell" game, and bohemian friends Kerouac and Ginsberg--added to frame the book's wild visions. This is, ironically, a somewhat rational approach to an unfilmable book (and it makes a hair-curling double bill with Barton Fink, another look at writerly madness, with both films sharing Judy Davis). Cronenberg is a natural for oozing mugwumps and typewriters that turn into giant bugs, of course. But in the end, this is really his own vision of the artistic process, rather than Burroughs's hallucinatory descent into hell. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a Kafka high, you feel like a bug..............2007-04-03

My favourite movie of all time, Naked lunch is just pure genius. It is a Burroughs inspired spiral fun ride deep into the madness of addiction and literary genius.
I loved Peter Weller's portrayal of Bill, Yes he is wooden, but so was William Burroughs in real life!
The acting is great and I say Naked Lunch is David Cronenburgs best movie ever.
My only gripe is that this film was too short! I wish that a sequel could be made with peter weller.
I never get sick of watching this film and the extras were also great.
With classic Burroughs dialoge like, "Your not the first person to develope a bug powder problem", "Think its about time to share my last taste of the true black meat, the flesh of the giant brazillian aquatic centipede" and "say bill, do you think you could rub some of this powder on my lips?" and "I think our metabolisms are very different, Who's, yours or Kafka's?" and many more memorable qoates too many to mention.
Classic Burroughs stories such as the talking A-hole and Bobo's unfortunate end, are just some of the many reasons why I love this film.
The imagination, talking bugs/typwriters are all inspired madness that makes for a great movie.
The extras are great and well worth having.
I can/and do watch this film over and over and see things I missed before.
I also love that David Cronenburg made reference to Naked Lunch ala Bug Powder Problem in his movie "Existenz" when it is mentioned that a character had a "Bio Port Problem".
If you love 'literary' inspired fantasy and great imaginative movies with great acting, Naked Lunch is a must.
It is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars cronenberg meets burroughs - a successful meeting.......2007-02-03

If you are expecting a straight adaptation of the novel 'Naked lunch' you've come to the wrong place.. If you are looking for two styles converging into a twisted bizarre sci-fi arthouse extravaganza - step right up.. David Cronenberg (the fly, scanners, eXistenZ, etc.) has a unique attatchment to surreal sci-fi investigations of the nature of reality and transformation (I think I am miserably failing to describe his cinema) - Burroughs also has a style which, shall we say, twists the bounds of reality -sometimes literally in his drug induced descriptions in 'Naked Lunch'.. but mostly in his radical prose style (something between james joyce and aldous huxley but with an extra ingredient of the bizzare).. somehow this meeting of two artists works out and creates this frightening alternate noir-like alter-universe called interzone.. Highlights of the movie include Cronenberg's strange puppetry which bring to life Burroughs creatures of his own unconcious mind.. This is a beautiful movie to look at - and one that plays like a fever-dream.. My only dissapointment was that I had just read the book - and was still so in awe of Burroughs writing - that I had trouble excepting an interpretation.. But Cronenberg's artistry actually enhances more than it detracts..

5 out of 5 stars COOL! and as I was saying to "praise the goddess"-.......2007-01-18

To start out,I won't even comment on your inability,(or rigid unwillingness as I can't conceive of anyone thick enough NOT to have the ability,)to grasp the concept of synergy,i.e. Buckminster Fuller,i.e. the sum of the whole being greater than,or capable of transforming the definition of the seperate parts,BUT,I do think your bent of mind has you obscured by clouds of narrow perception. Do you even know the meaning of the word obtuse? I don't think so. This film is extremely existential and anthropomorphic but is quite the reverse of obtuse. So, at the risk of being truly obtuse, look the word up in the Dictionary. Then try using it in the proper context. But then,if you weren't so obtuse you would already know that. But I digress,on to the review:
This film,(while admittedly being a bit afield of the novel,as well as extremely toned down from the sexual angle),IS fairly brilliant and the scene where the 'Agent' is having a conversation with another 'Agent' while walking down the street, mouthing the conversation while we hear each person's private thoughts, while not original in concept,is quite original in style.(Woody Allen did the same thing as you recall in 'Annie Hall' but with subtitles. Using the actual 'thought dialogue' in voices as Cronenberg did raised the device from kitchiness to surreallism. COOL!

5 out of 5 stars I can think of TWO things wrong with that title..........2006-11-22

Quoth Nelson from the Simpsons... And that is the reaction a lot of people get to Burroughs.

I like "My Last Time" as another quote...

The movie is disturbingly beautiful. I'm straight yet I feel I'd snuggle with a MugWomp eagerly. And BioPunk (think HR Giger vs William Gibson) has always appealed to me.

See it, its quite a trip.

Leaden horror costumer that takes its tenuous starting point from the classic Gaston Leroux novel of the same name. The twist in this variation is that the Phantom was raised by telepathic rats in the subterranean caverns beneath the opera house. Thus our feral Phantom (Julian "Ratboy" Sands) develops an obsessive love for up-and-coming diva Christine (Asia Argento), and sets about to seduce her to his dark, rodent existence. Although beautifully photographed, with lots of ornate period detail to catch the eye, this is largely a by-the-numbers supernatural horror story with scant gory set pieces as diversions. Fans of Dario Argento will yell "Rats!" and all else will merely shrug. And why are the rats telepathic, anyway? Screenwriting credits go to Gerard Brach, best known for his many collaborations with Roman Polanski, most notably Repulsion. However, none of his absurd sense of humor comes through in this film, which really needs it. A shame all around. The DVD includes a short interview with the film's star, Julian Sands, as well as a photo gallery, some dispensable making-of clips, spliced together to appear as a featurette (mostly in untranslated Italian) and a very informative article from Fangoria Magazine. --Jim Gay

Description

Mysteriously, a series of terrifying accidents and brutal murders leaves a bloody body trail in the subterranean caverns of an opera house basement. Born into the murky sewer waters below the theater stalks a man/monster raised by creatures of the underworld. This Phantom's dark and grotesque life is shattered when he becomes obsessed with a beautiful young singer, seducing her with his chilling but exotic presence. The blood-curdling terror and disturbing eroticism of this classic story make this horror film one that will haunt your dreams forever.

5 out of 5 stars These people are nuts........2007-06-19

If you need all kinds of money thrown at a movie to make it good than your just shallow and boaring. This is an excelent work of cinematic art directed by one of the most talented cult film directors in the world. Dario Argento is the italian legend of horror...so if your just out of the loop than don't bother rating a perfectly great gothic masterpeice. Julian Sands is wonderful...the film is cool...get some class!

2 out of 5 stars Wow........2007-05-29

I am a Phantom fanatic so I was very interested to see what Dario's interpretation of it was. I have watched it a few times now and I still am not quite sure what to say about it.

First off, this movie is very, very ... very violent! This one was right up there with "The Hills Have Eyes" in my opinion. I couldn't believe the amount of gore to it. However, that was an interesting aspect of the story and something only Dario could bring out.

Secondly, there was a lot of nudity and some very sexual scenes. There were some parts that I have seen in porn videos so if you do watch this movie, be aware that sex is a very prevelant theme.

This movie is probably not something for Lloyd Webber fans. I went into watching this movie saying, "I will love anything Phantom related." Wrong! This version is very much based on the monsterous phantom. He is very into rats and violence and not so much the music. He is, however, ruggedly handsome with no mask at all. He is quite normal looking. Christine actually has a very small role in this movie and is portrayed like more of a porn star than a young, rising opera star.

The movie is just okay but be prepared for sex and gore beyond your imagination.

2 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-04-20

It is not the best movie ever made but it is watchable, mainly due to Morricone's Music and the opera selections. Asia Argento plays the main heroine, young talented opera singer Christine. I don't think she was bad and her face is unbelievably beautiful - she reminds Olivia Hussey of "Romeo and Juliet" (1968) and Uma Thurman if Uma ever decides to dye her hair dark. Production values, costumes, special effects, decorations, and the singing voices are very good. I noticed that I laughed a lot during the film - perhaps Argento made a dark comedy of the familiar story?

I did not like Julien Sands as a non-masked Phantom. He looks a lot like the creatures that raised him.

The film has an orgy scene that is so funny it could've came directly from "Caligula"

Overall - I had a lot of fun, and and can call it one of my guilty pleasures.

2.5/5

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2007-01-28

Although I had read nothing but horrible reviews from about this film version, I received it as a gift from my boyfriend and have to admit that I was terribly interested in watching it. Halfway through the first time however, I turned it off, justifying my original notions. I made it through the second time, but more as a challenge to myself. Even though I am a huge "Phantom of the Opera" fan, it is the original story that I fell in love with, not a twisted tale of a man raised by telepathic rats and developing a pyschic connection with the heroine, while mutilating his victims with a rather animal-like vengence. The plot is muddled, the acting cheesy, and the overall filming, elementary. I respect Dario Argento's other works, but not this. This film is horrible.

People have complained about a properer release of "The Exterminator". I agree, I wish this 1998 Anchor Bay release had some extra features, interviews, Director comments and of course "Exterminator" Trailers. This film is presented in its original widescreen 1:85:1. I think the film transfer of this film to dvd is excellent and again another fine Anchor Bay release. The roof scene with the pigeons you do see some dust lines, but that was because the of this films low budget. Anchor Bay did the best film tranfer of this limited film quality. Yeah!! I know this is a Death Wish ripoff,(Death Wish,Death Wish 2, but beleive me "The Exterminator" has its shining moments. The music by Joe Renzetti is very realistically inspiring and captures the mood of the film well. The most realistic part was when "The Exterminator" John Eastland picks up a prostitute and brings her to a hotel. As the prostitute removes her blouse John notices that her breasts have been burned. When John questions her about what happened to her, she is very defensive at first, than as she explains to John that she was burned with a soddering iron, Joe Renzettis somber music score plays in the background, you really feel the womans pain, This scene with the acting, along with the music score really got to my heart. "The Exterminator" gets ripped for being a chip Death Wish knock off but to me with its brutal scenes capture the crime ridden streets of New York in 1979-1980. Director James Glickenhause saw this problem and put this into "The Exterminator". Terms like "Chicken House" were real and did exists at that time and unfortunatly still do into the 21st century. Glickenhause did not sugar coat anything and laid reality all out in "The Exterminator". Glickenhause's message was "If the authorities can't control these sadistic criminals, than maybe a vietnam veteran that is somewhat off keel, can rid the New York streets of these animals. "Exterminator John Eastland" even undermineded the Goverment and all the corrupt New York Politicians, another Glickenhause message about corrupted politicians just letting these criminals ruin and control the honest persons lifestyles. The Exterminator might be dated and considered a Death Wish ripoff, to me I think "The Exterminator" is a very realistic film that captures the seedy crime ridden streets of a 1979-1980 New York. The acting is brilliant for a film of this genre. I really began to like this guy John Eastland, and how he beleived one man can make a difference even though it was illegal. Actor Robert Ginty who plays Eastland was not a georgeous Chippendale model but an average looking joe like anybody else, I guess that is why his this guy Eastland appealed to me. James Glickenhause clearly researched this film as far as criminal activity in the streets of New York at this time. "The Exterminator" is a true all around great vigilante film, in my opinion the best of all of them, Yes! even the Death Wish Films, which I do like. People will knock "The Exterminator" believe me it is a well thought out film by director James Glickenhause. Again a nice remastered film transfer by the people at Anchor Bay...........

4 out of 5 stars "Tango" DVD is good for the money.......2006-07-27

I was very worried about getting a lousy DVD of THE EXTERMINATOR from Tango Entertainment, but luckily my fears were unfounded. The DVD is about as spare as you can get. No trailer, no chapters (!!!), nothing but a menu whose only option is "Play Movie." But the image is clean and clear, in the proper aspect ratio, and is the uncut version with the full beheading and meat grinder scenes. Which is literally all I wanted from it. By industry standards its a piece of junk (not enhanced, not remastered, no extras), but if all you have access to is an old VHS rental (like I did), this is a big step up. I only paid $9 and I am very happy with it.

1 out of 5 stars Flame Out for "The Exterminator"?........2006-03-26

Having still in my posession an original vhs of the movie, totally uncut, and worn out I might add,it was with much anticipation that I opened my recently released Directors Cut of The Exterminator dvd here in Australia, expecting to see once again, those intermittent, believably, gory scenes, albeit mixed in with a sometimes slow plot and totally unneccessary love affair between Christopher George and Samantha Eggar,in a new digital masterpiece.But..scenes were cut out, none others added, as stated on the cover, the print was 1980's poor ( by today's standards),and the sound was low quality. Lets get this movie digitally re-edited and remastered properly, by somebody who knows how,and let The Exterminator live on in style.

2 out of 5 stars I GIVE UP !!!!!WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE THIS MOVIE A PROPER RELEASE!!!.......2005-11-23

Ok I thought the Anchor Bay re-release of this film a few years ago would be the LAST and final time this FANTASTIC movie would see the light of day. Then only last month I find out that TANGO? Entertainment has slated to release this film and it has been digitally REMASTERED!!!SWEET.I then read that this will ONLY be available FULLSCREEN not in Widescreen. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!! So today the disc arrives. The packaging is super cheap and nothing to it.However I NEVER judge a disc on that. So i pop the disc in...well Yeah HURRAY it is in WIDESCREEN HOWEVER THIS HAS NOT BEEN REMASTERED!!!!!!!!It is exactly the same poor print Anchor Bay was shoving in our faces. So these guys pick up ther print from Anchor Bay and slap it in a new box. Check out the Green Background scenes AND the Rooftop scenes (always a good point to see those nicks and scratches)This is pathetic. This film MORE than deserves a proper release. If you OWN the Anchor Bay cut of this then keep it and skip this. If not then pick it up. I am only giving this dvd 2 starts due to the fact that I am only pleased to see it back out and about. Even if has been done POORLY so.

3 out of 5 stars Fair movie.......2005-09-18

I like the movie but like I said by watching it on vhs there are some scenes that were cut. On dvd all scenes will be seen, but the price for the purchase of this movie is too high. I would have loved to seen a better ending for the movie. I think the producers should have put in a better profile and background about the killer who helped his friend. Other than that I always liked watching this movie. Drop the price of the dvd and you'll have a lot people purchasing the movie including me.

Both a kind of home movie and a salute to the hip, pop-up sketch comedy of 1960s-early 1970s television--Laugh-In, Monty Python's Flying Circus, that sort of thing--Schizopolis is a hit-and-miss series of dada gags with vaguely connecting threads of Kafkaesque paranoia. Soderbergh himself stars as two people--one an ineffective dentist, the other a speechwriter for a cult movement called Eventualism, which has set out to "question all answers"--connected by their romances with the same woman, played by Soderbergh's real-life ex, Betsy Bramley. There isn't so much a story as a series of bits in which these characters often (though not necessarily) turn up, from press conferences on the subject of horse urination to old footage of nudists to a scene of an Eventualist exchange between husband and wife: "Generic greeting!" "Generic greeting returned!" None of this leads to a literal point, but after a while an undercurrent of disease about making sense of the modern world becomes apparent beneath the jokes. Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape, Out of Sight) is certainly a filmmaker who goes his own way in life, always hitting his target in one spot or another and occasionally getting a bull's-eye for his trouble. Schizopolis is no bull's-eye, and it has just as many detractors as admirers, but it's impossible not to appreciate Soderbergh's conviction that making a film out on the fringes is a worthy endeavor. --Tom Keogh

Description

Fletcher Munson has a doppelgänger in dentist Dr. Jeffrey Korchek. In his only starring performance to date, acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean's Eleven) inhabits both roles: Munson, onanistic corporate drone and speechwriter for New Age guru T. Azimuth Schwitters, and the swinging Korchek, Muzak enthusiast and lover to Munson's disenchanted wife. Meanwhile, mad exterminator and part-time celebrity prima donna Elmo Oxygen seduces local housewives in secret code and plots against Schwitters. Placing the onus squarely on the viewer ("If you don't understand this film, it's your fault and not ours"), writer/director/editor/cameraman Soderbergh presents a deranged comedy of confused identity, doublespeak, and white-knuckled corporate intrigue, confirming his status as one of America's most daring and unpredictable filmmakers.

2 out of 5 stars Soderbergh's best, which isn't saying much..........2007-04-14

I do like parts of this film, which is unusual, as I feel Soderbergh is one of the most overrated filmmakers working today. Here this film has a bit of a free form feel, and it works well in spots, but in others it just falls flat. Soderbergh is not a particularly good actor, and he doesn't have much screen presence. Casting himself was a mistake. Many of Soderbergh's films are remakes (Solaris, Traffic, Ocean's 11), and not very good ones at that. Here he tries to emulate Python and Bunuel, and he has some success, but overall the film is a mess, and a lot of its jokes don't quite cut it.

5 out of 5 stars Misunderstood.......2006-09-12

I'm still not sure what I think about this movie from a purely critical standpoint, but I respect it immensely. I have watched it more times than I care to admit, but in a way it has pulled off. This movie makes you think, and with each viewing you shave off another layer of confusion. I'm still confused about many things, but I can't find any review here that actually understands many aspects of what this movie is. It is a satire that shoots in all directions at all angles. There is satire on small things and large things, and often both in the same scene. For instance, Elmo's character symbolizes the media. Watch the progression of his character and his actions and the effects of them and keep in mind that the assasination attempt at the end is filmed. Look at the little news segments and look for the satire within them. Everything has a place in this movie, and I do find it entertaining to find out what they mean. You can't watch this movie expecting entertainment in the form that is presented in a regular movie. The entertainment here comes from the solving of the puzzle, and finding the reason for the happenings. Rewatch the movie and think of it as a sort of four dimensional jigsaw *snicker* puzzle that ruthlessly assaults all things ingenuine and confusing, whether they be personal or empirical, in this world we live in. Also, once you watch the movie with an understanding of the story revolving around Munster's wife you will find it is actually quite affecting. There is much much more to this story than first meets the eye, especially when you look at the doppelganger thing as not literal and the... mind takeover thingy (I don't know the words for it, but if you have watched the movie you know what I'm talking about)... as a surreal element to progress the story in an unconventional way. Also try to keep track of the space of time these scenes take place really closely.

All closed minded people should steer clear of this movie; you won't find your satisfaction in it. You will probably end up looking in the wrong places. If you don't think you'll enjoy spending time analyzing the various, multi-dimensional, and plentiful intelligent nuggets of satire then please, also stay away because you will find nothing of interest.

5 out of 5 stars Viewing Prerequisites: A Working Knowledge Of Japanese And Dentistry.......2006-06-15

This is far and away the most unique and original movie I have ever seen. There is no close second place. Steven Soderbergh wrote, starred in, and directed this little-known masterpiece, and I am now a loyal fan. The caution on the box perhaps best summarizes the film: "Warning: All attempts at synopsizing the film have ended in failure and hospitalization." This is truth in advertising if I have ever seen it. Think of "Schizopolis" as a narcissistic, paranoid blend of equal parts "Head," "1984," "Monty Python's Flying Circus," and "Unarius."

The film is absolutely impossible to categorize. It occurs in three principal acts, but they are all circular and the plots entangle themselves in the end in an almost Seinfeldesque manner. Steven Soderbergh stars as both Fletcher Munson and Dr. Jeffrey Korchek. Munson is a curiously self-absorbed speechwriter for New Age guru (and founder of "Eventualism") T. Azimuth Schwitters, while Korchek, a dentist with a Muzak fixation dominates act two by having an affair with Munson's disenchanted wife from act one. Throughout all this, local exterminator (and celebrity) Elmo Oxygen uses very unconventional pillow talk to seduce housewives while plotting against Schwitters. Eddie Jemison, noteworthy as "Nameless Numberhead Man," is the perfect comic foil for Munson.

Although you will need to watch this movie several times to even scratch the surface of the nuances it contains, several themes are apparent, most notably the satirical approach to contemporary society which is infused throughout the film in many ways, most notably in the dialogue. When Munson greets his wife after work he says "Generic greeting," to which she replies "Generic greeting returned." Later in the film several other dialogue issues occur with Soderbergh's characters speaking in Japanese, French, and Italian seemingly at random and to great comic effect.

From the outset, this film is highly segmented (much like an episode of "Monty Python's Flying Circus") and confrontational. There is even an explicit warning in the beginning which says "If you don't understand this film, it's your fault and not ours." This type of in-your-face humor is very uncommon and I simply loved it. The film is extremely difficult to follow if you are approaching it like a conventional movie with a well developed plot and characters, but if you can deal with the exceptional stream-of-consciousness, non sequitur humor that Soderbergh uses here, "Schizopolis" will become one of your favorites, too.

I highly recommend this film.

4 out of 5 stars Schiz-what-o-lis?.......2005-10-06

Schizopolis isn't at all like any of Soderbergh's other films (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Out of Sight, the 'Oceans' movies). The story goes that he made it due to his frustration with studio indifference and/or meddling and decided to do something cheap and fun on his own, even starring in it himself. It's his screwy sense of absurdist humor that comes through full-blown on this one. Schizopolis's fractured, non-linear narrative (something Soderbergh did later with The Limey) demands some attention, but from the very first scene, where the director warns you up front that if this movie confuses or disturbs you, it's your fault, not his, you'll be hooked. Or confused and disturbed. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre Offbeat Comedy Satire Confusing - See It Again!.......2005-09-22

This is a low budget film from Steven Soderbergh that uses ingenuity and absurdity and lots of clever satire to keep the viewer off balance and coming back to see the film again to try and "get it." Soderbergh is the writer, director, and lead actor in the film. He plays an office worker who gets called on to write a speech for a self-help guru who is the figurehead of a philosophy called "Eventualism." He also plays (in act 2 of the movie) a libidinous dentist who is having an affair with the wife of the character he plays in act 1. Meanwhile, a deranged guy with a pest control suit and car is staging some daring videos involving acts of sex and violence - and he aims to film his attempt to kill the self help guru in act 3. In act 3 the Soderbergh character is often filmed speaking in foreign languages while other characters speak English and respond as if there's nothing unusual about the foreign speech (French & Italian may come in handy here!). Soderbergh introduces the film in a short sequence at the beginning and at the end he answers questions from a supposed theater audience - except you don't hear the questions. There are a variety of bizarre sequences and non-sequiturs in the film, and it's hard to figure out what the point of it all is.
Then, on the DVD Soderbergh interviews himself in a very amusing satirical "director's commentary" where he speaks as a pretentious, narcissistic "artist" who sees himself at the center of the social and cultural universe. Which may be the point of the characters in the film itself... and even the little news clip interruption where the news show announces some common lady from New Mexico has been appointed to make all decisions and judgments about things in America. So you could say its a scattered comedy tied together by themes of schizophrenia and narcissism. You may either love it or hate it depending upon your view, as you are the center of your own field of perception.

4 out of 5 stars Your Move......Creep.......2007-07-03

Of Unknown origin is one of those long forgotten and fun horror films of the 80s. Stephen King cites this as one of his all time favorite horror movies. Of course, whether or not you can actually consider this a horror film is debatable, but what else would you categorize it as? The plot is quite simple, and that's all part of the appeal. Buckaroo Banzai himself finds his home invaded by a rat after his family takes off for a few days. It starts off as an annoying nuisance, but soon turns into obsession as Weller tries to kill the damn thing. He sorta falls into a sort of temporary insanity that affects his work performance and all those around him(of course I'd go a bit batty if I had to go a few days without Shannon Tweed myself). It starts out simply enough with some damaged furniture and wiring. Traps naturally don't work, neither does the exterminator or pretty much any other conventional means. By the time we reach the climax of the film, Weller's decked out in a helmet(with flashlight of course), kneepads and a homemade spiked club ready to enter a duel to the death with the invading rodent, practically destroying his home in the process(you're reminded time and again that Weller practically built the house himself as to make the damage all the more shocking). We only see the rat in a few quick shots. These are shots of an actual rat at various angles to give the illusion that it's larger than the average rat. It's kinda hard to get an idea of how big the rat actually is until one scene where it slips under the covers of Weller's bed. Then we can see it's about the size of a basketball or small dog. Like I said before, it's a fun film. The simple premise, the unintentional quirkiness, and a good performance by Weller all add up to a fun and entertaining time. Rediscover(or discover) a fun, forgotten film.

5 out of 5 stars Robocop vs. Ratzilla..........2007-06-18

Bart Hughes (Peter Weller) has a vermin problem of a most severe nature. When his wife (Shannon Tweed!!!!) and son go away for a vacation, a rat the size of a dog makes its presence known. At first, it only eats through a few cereal boxes, but as the days go by, the über-rat increases the damage quotient while driving poor Bart crazy! Since traps and poisons are useless, Bart declares war on the beast, which culminates in a house-destroying game of whack-a-rat! There's plenty of humor to enhance the horror, and yes, Ms. Tweed dons her birthday suit! What are you waiting for??...

TRAINWRECK APPEAL!!! YOU DO/DON'T WANT TO WATCH THIS MOVIE, BUT THE CHEESIER IT GETS, THE MORE YOU HAVE TO WATCH TO SEE JUST HOW THIS CRAZY THING CONCLUDES. WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY, I ONLY RECOMMEND FOR THE DIE-HARDS!

5 out of 5 stars A Struggle For Survivial. A Struggle To The Death........2006-07-09

Way back in the 1980s and 90s I used to go to the video store and rent all of the horror films.

Most weren't that great but there were a few that stood out in my mind.

Recently I started thinking about this movie and I couldn't remember the title. Finding it started to become an obsession for me.

I remembered it because of its uniqueness and dark humor.

Fortunately this guy who lives in N.Y. city knew the title and he told me.

The mysterious visitor that invades this guy's house represents the struggles that we all go through I guess at times.

5 out of 5 stars The old Man and the..........2005-06-24

Peter Weller is a man on his way up fast in the business world. He has personally renovated a NY brownstone and is up for an important position at work. But then two things happen. First his wife and son go off to Vermont to visit her family. Second, a very large rat moves in. What follows is a sort of modern-day retelling of THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (complete with clips from the movie).

As Peter becomes aware of the rat and begins to try and deal with it, he slowly becomes obsessed with freeing his home of the unwanted invader. Obsession grows and Weller sinks deeper and deeper. Work begins to suffer and his secretary and boss begin to worry about him. But whatever the hardship, Weller, like the Old Man, will not let up for a moment. I found the ending of the movie to be quite satisfying with the final lines very neatly tying the whole tale up neatly.

Some may think of this as horror, some suspense, and some tragedy. There are definitely elements of all three involved but any such label would bee to simple for what this movie really is. This is not a very well-known film but it deserves more exposure.
