5 out of 5 stars WOW! - An Amazing Performer - A Musicians Musician.......2007-03-01

One of the greatest ACL shows of all time!
Steve is awesome and doesn't fail us here either.
This is a must have video for all guitar players, songwriters and anyone with a yearning for genuine acoustic sounds.

There isn't a bad moment
A few beers and a night with Steve Goodman
It doesn't get much better than that.

I really never thought I'd be able to play guitar along side Steve but with this video it is a real treat...thanks

5 out of 5 stars I think I am the oldest fan.......2007-01-22

I knew Steve in Chicago when we were all young. He was a wonderful performer from the beginning and an even more wonderful person. He was one of the kindest people ever. I was lucky enough to hear him many times on stage and off. I never tire of his music. I have all his albums and have just added this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Look At An Immense Talent!.......2006-12-20

A chance to sample the immense talent of Steve Goodman, who was a true musican's musician, and an entertainer par excellence! I regret I didn't get to know his work earlier (when I lived in Chicago in the late 60's and 70's!), and only knew of him through the reference to him in David Allan Coe's classic "You Never Even Called Me By My Name." Goodman comes across as not just a superbly talented guy, but a great performer and a nice guy--filled with the joy of life and wanting to transmit it to his audience, even though he and they knew he was dying of leukemia. Any country fan, folk fan, or lover of just plain good ol' tuneful, clever, singable songs will love this dvd. Get it!

4 out of 5 stars A True Delight.......2006-03-19

I got the DVD and have truly enjoyed recalling the energy, wit, insight and virtuousity of Steve Goodman.

As a guitar player I have been watching exactly what Steve did in some of his blues runs. They were (and still are) distinctively his.

As I watch the live footage I get the sense that every second was an adventure for Chicago Shorty!

The DVD is worth it alone for "Men Who Love Women Who Love Men."

The performances of Steve on this DVD are not necessarily the best takes of his performances. Some of the live takes on other CDs and LPs are technically smoother--but these are absolutely essential for any Goodman fan.

He's gone to watch the angels now
We're stuck here with the DVD
I'm glad to have at least that much!

5 out of 5 stars They believe me now..........2005-09-04

I am a lifelong musician. I have a very musical stepson, aged 24. He's into folk music, plays banjo, mandolin, fiddle. I have a husband, he likes John Prine. As an old lady of 44, I tell nostalgic stories of doing stage lighting for the most incredible live performer and his rag-tag band of scraggly folk singers, mandolin wizards, and celebrity drop-ins. I mention the name, Steve Goodman, and rattle off a few of his more well-known songs... City of New Orleans, You Never Even Call Me By My Name, etc. I used to get knowing nods and shrugs, the occasional eye roll. Imagine my joy at finding this tape - finally being able to visually demonstrate the indescribable energy and wit of this charming treasure of a guy. Watching him shake a rather listless and stuffy Austin City Limits crowd out of their patchouli haze and leave them cheering for encores was a treat well worth the investment. Seeing those unforgettable facial expressions, and the guitar licks - MAN. He was so much fun to watch, to listen to - to be in the same room with. My family has a new-found respect for me and my stories now! And my 24-year-old is practicing some of those incredible guitar licks. A new generation of Steve Goodman fans is born. The interviews are heartfelt, moving, and lovely. If you have ever seen Steve, you'll laugh and cry. If not, you will become a fan.

He may not have been blessed with the photogenic looks and obvious charisma of your typical rock star, but Roy Orbison had at least two of the things that make a great artist: timeless songs, and a voice to sing 'em with. That's all on display in this hour-long 1982 performance on television's Austin City Limits. It's not Orbison's finest moment, perhaps; his band is competent but uninspired, and neither sound nor video quality is topnotch. But all is forgiven when he matches that soaring, almost operatic tenor to dramatic, heart-wrenching classics like "Only the Lonely," "Crying," "Leah," "Running Scared," and the rest (including "Pretty Woman," the rocker that may be Orbison's best-known hit). DVD extras include photos and a brief documentary about Wink, Texas, and the high school band Orbison formed while attending high school in that desolate burg. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars OK product.......2007-05-30

This is a digitized tape of a TV program shot by a local TV station. Video is 'pixelated' in faster movement, and the shots are 'canned' in many ways. Sound is good. Roy was a singer more than an entertainer, and this typifies it. It is an OK addition to a fan's library.

1 out of 5 stars No purchase.......2007-01-16

I did not purchase this item, I deleted it from my order before I closed it. So, I have no opinion on this item.

5 out of 5 stars A LEGENDARY GREAT PERFORMANCE.......2006-12-25

Don't believe the reviews that would lead you to believe this is a sub-par show. Yes, "A Black And white Night" has better sound quality and has a better band backing him up, (how could it not be better given the personel) but this is the real Roy Orbison in all his artistic glory. They don't make 'em like him anymore. Thankfully we have DVD's like this to re-live his great performances forever.

2 out of 5 stars Good Show... Terrible Transfer.......2006-08-25

I love Roy Orbison. This show sounded very good. However, Image Entertainment didn't properly transfer this video. Often times, you see color separation in the video and it looks very primative. Yes, it is a very old video but New West Records has done a much better with Austin City Limits transfers delivering superior sound and picture quality. It looks like Image Entertainment didn't work on this dvd at all. What a shame.

5 out of 5 stars BETTER than you'd think-another GEM, Roy........2006-04-15

I'm tried to think of am amazing review, but I couldn't. Just another super preformance by the man. Thax, Roy !!

4 out of 5 stars Now I Wanna GO!!!.......2006-04-18

Austin City Limits is known for its musical diversity. That shows through on the CD, and it shows through on the DVD as well.

This is the third year of the festival, and judging from the crowds that can be seen on this DVD, it's going to be around for a while. It's pretty clear from the video how hot it was in Austin that weekend, but people came out to listen to some outstanding bands.

Don't worry that if you've heard the CD you'll get the same stuff on the DVD - while the video features many of the same acts that are on the CD, you'll get to see and hear some different bands. Sheryl Crow and Rosanne Cash make appearances on the DVD, as do Pat Green and Jack Ingram.

The video reinforced something that I'd thought after listening to the CD - Pixies didn't really seem to be into the performance - from accounts I read of the show from people who were there, they had some technical problems at the beginning of the performance, though that's not evident in the video. I found a few more artists to keep an eye on watching the DVD - Old 97's and The Soundtrack of Our Lives, for example.

The video quality is excellent, and the sound is outstanding. I used this video to break the new DVD-ROM drive I bought, and the quality even on my 17" monitor was great.

I'd have liked to have seen more than just one song from some of these bands; maybe next year they can expand into four DVDs! The performances were fun to watch (though watching Howie Day play with the gear on the ground got a little tedious - the song was great, though!).

4 out of 5 stars I never knew Austin City Limits was a concert!.......2005-10-06

I have seen the PBS series, but a co-worker turned me on to this disc. What a different world it is! I am usually not a big concert fan. I like listening to the music not watching it. In fact, if I want to watch something, it would have to be something educational or a romantic comedy.

All in all a good DVD, menus are really pretty, like nice shiny ribbons and art-deco building. Who occupies those offices in the buildings on the DVD menu? Interesting look. Makes me feel like going to the local craft shop and making my own ribbon boutique in gold and blue and orange, etc.

Wish there were more photos or interviews or behind the scenes look. How come there is no extended liner notes with more photos? I vote for more photos! Just bought the Rachael Yamagata CD because of this DVD. She is such a strong, soulful woman. A perfect role model for all ladies. I am happy I bought this.

4 out of 5 stars You can feel the Heat!!!!!!.......2005-10-06

When you watch this DVD you understand why things are slower in the south. It's the heat dammit! This is a really fun DVD to watch. You can really feel the Austin heat in the daytime concerts. Everyone is sweating and things are so orange. It's like being on the surface of a hotplate glowing orange and red and sizzling. Sizzle, Sizzle.

I wish I had gotten tickets for this years show. My mistake for not planning ahead, but when you have 4 kids age 6-15 it is pretty tough to go anywhere!!!!! I guess I will have to wait another year or continue watching this DVD. It would be nice if this was a yearly release of a DVD. That way gals like me that couldn't make it can enjoy it at home with the ice cream and cookies and the kids.

I recommend this DVD. Also for those of you with children who are 8-10 years old, the DVD: Shark Tales and The Incredibles. See you in Austin, hopefully, next year!

4 out of 5 stars Love the music, but why only one song?.......2005-10-06

I have been to the festival many times and considering how many bands there are and how long each of them play, it like a mini-concert by each artist. So why not put more songs out? There were sooo many good songs that where played live and yet not all of them made it to the DVD. Forget the 2 disc set, what ever happen to the 10 or 12 disc box set like the Live Aid DVD or the compilation of Bob Dylan? Even Ericka Clement Robson who is dead has a box set out. Come one, no love for us country loving folks? Figures considering some marketing machine, literally, in New York decided what songs should be allowed. How about being brave and getting some real songs out there in the mix. I don't think anyone wants the junk that Madison Ave deems PC. Come on Austin people, we are progressive, not like some so and so's we know. More songs for next year and more artist that are local, please.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it already. .......2005-10-05

There is so many crap dvd's out there. This is actually one of the good one. Not crap. Watched the Cream DVD and the Crossroads crap with all these old ass "guitar rock" legends crap. They all need to retire. Same thing with the rolling stones. How long are they gonna milk it, probably till they die. So back the the ACL disk. It's a great disc. Lot's of different types of artist and bands, not all just country, indie, or punk. If it was it would be a waste. Was debating about buying either another 50 cent CD or the ACL disc. Took a leap of faith and bought it. Liked it, now need to go visit Austin. Is it really that hot? Doesn't look to bad. I missed this years festival, but with the hurricane and all probably a good thing I stayed home.

The tagline is "Live music. Pure and simple." A mainstay on PBS since 1976, Austin City Limits showcases the finest in modern music. This two-CD set captures highlights from the fest's fourth year, opening with a rocker from Australia's Jet ("Cold Heart Bitch") and ending with a raver from Widespread Panic ("Love Tractor"). Twenty-four acts strut their stuff on the first disc, including a bonus selection from the John Butler Trio ("Treat Yo Mama"), and each is represented by one song. Some performances take place in the sunshine (it was 108 degrees on Sunday), some after dark. The heat means bare-chested bass players (the Bravery), drummers (Bloc Party), and vocalists (Thievery Corporation), and more than enough sweat to go around—most of it stuck to Britain's Kaiser Chiefs ("I Predict a Riot"). The second disc consists of extras, including 14 short interviews and four mini-documentaries. Although it's fair to say there's something for everyone here, the emphasis is on alternative rock and there are few female-fronted combos, with the exception of Texas quartet Eisley ("Golly Sandra") and Illinois singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata ("Be Be Your Love"), who also duets with Jason Mraz ("Did You Get My Message?"). Standouts include Washington DC's Thievery Corporation with the dubbed-out "Warning Shots" and Ohio duo the Black Keys with the smoking "Set You Free." Some of the notable 2005 participants not featured on this collection include Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett, the Black Crowes, Wilco, and Spoon—let's hear it for a sequel! --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great disc, good selection of artists.......2006-08-08

People always complain that their favorite artists aren't on the ACL Fest DVDs, but this set has a great selection of songs and artists. (Hey, if you want to see Coldplay you can turn on MTV). Disc 1 opens with a riveting Jet performance. Other good performances include The Bravery, The Decemberists, Bloc Party, and Rachael Yamagata. A bit heavy on the British artists, though.

My only complaint is that the DVDs don't capture the essence of ACL Fest other than a few time-captures and interviews on the second set. Perhaps the producers wanted to hide all evidence of the incredible heat this past year (108 in the shade) and the dust storm. But in a lot of ways I think this makes it cool -- the crowds hung with it despite the horrible conditions.

Bottom line - a great music DVD

5 out of 5 stars Confusion Masks Reality: Sorting Out the Mystery.......2006-11-15

Maximillian Martin is an elderly Spanish gentleman who is hospitalized in Paris in an ultramodern high tech hospital ... where each patient resides in a two or three room suite while undergoing tests and procedures or recovery from an illness or surgery ... His son Victor and girlfriend Eileen from Argentina arrive at Charles DeGaul Airport where they are met by Alberto another son and his wife Carmen and Luis, Max's third son. The family is gathering to support Max during this difficult time when he has been diagnosed with brain cancer and is preparing for brain surgery.

Victor keeps company with his dad at the hospital and listens closely when his dad rambles about needing to leave the hospital ... to find Rancel. He provides Victor a key to a secret apartment in Paris which his dad had owned for 40 years and also gives him a button which will verify to Rancel that Victor is who he says he is ... Victor is puzzled by his dad's rambling and mentions some of it to his mom. Later, he sees his mom, Marie berating his dad and begins to wonder if maybe she is hiding something from him, holding back information or misdleading him. There are some fascinating family dynamics within the story. For example, Luis who divorced his wife is making love to his mistress (who used to be the nanny to their children) and the exwife makes a loud scene at the hotel about their relationship causing other guests to come out into the corridor to find out what all the noise is about. Victor has been having an affair with Carmen, the wife of his brother Alberto but Eileen understands (so she says). Eileen is completely aware of this, declares her love for him but lays down an ultimatum, he must make up his mind whether or not he will marry her. Essentially he must choose between Carmen or Eileen ...

Victor helps his dad escape from the hospital for a few hours and they roam Paris, looking for the address his dad needed to find. Max is looking for "The Fountain" and is seriously distressed when it is not where he believed it was. After returning to the hospital, Victor discovers a book written by Rancel with a title that begins to make sense out of his dad's ramblings. The biography for Rancel as written on the jacket inside cover begins to put things together for Victor and he suspects his mom has been lying to him. Victor tries to find Rancel, the author ... Victor learns Rancel and his dad were Communists 40 years ago and both were supposed to meet at a railroad station. His dad did not show up but Rancel did and was arrested, imprisoned for 10 years. Max felt guilty for Rancel's imprisonment, yet he never visited him in prison. He wanted to make peace with this aspect of his life ... The story and plot are mysterious as the pieces of the puzzle come together and add some surprises which twist and turn the ending into a very fitting conclusion. This is a highly recommended film for mystery fans who love a good thrill ... Erika Borsos (pepper flower)

4 out of 5 stars "Sin Limites" brings Humanness to the City.......2006-03-08

The movie is good but the item was received damaged (the DVD box was cracked and torn around the stem and edges - but the DVD disk was OK). The storyline is capable. The acting is very good and plays with depth: layers of tension, conflict, human frailty and determination. The actors chosen for the roles are excellent.

2 out of 5 stars a lot of quiet.......2005-11-05

I have to be a dissenting reviewer from the norm, as I found the film so lifeless, I looked at the clock 45 minutes into it, then at the halfway point at one hour actually put it on pause and took a nap. Though the acting is fine, with all the undercurrents suspected, you'd expect a livelier group, more histrionics, something to pick up the pace. Instead, there are long silent and ultimately pointless moments, when the film isn't supposed to be photography (and I appreciate cinematography just fine) but a motion picture. On the other hand, it's a movie on how a selfish and/or immature love is both destructive and ultimately a life force, and how cowardice has both its positive and negative contradictions as well. As different secrets amongst the members of one family could be tearing that family apart, denial has been the saving grace and practice and therefore the family stays together no matter what, with none of the members as happy as they could have been if they'd been honest or honorable or less determined to keep resentments old and current completely dormant as tiny conspiracies are forming like clouds over everyone. And geographical escape, also practised, is as bad a condition as denial, since it leads to the same conditions. Finally, a main reason to find a film boring is if the characters don't engage you, and I found this to be the main fault.

5 out of 5 stars Film does not dissapoint.......2005-09-05

Rarely does one see a film that grips the viewer from start to finish. American films lack the human values, the insights into character, the depth of feeling and understanding that motivate key characters. One wants to see more such films. American films, in contrast, rely on special effects, vulgar language, gratutitous sex, violence and sensationalism. Actors like Bruce Willis irritate me with their brazen arrogance, while Fernando Fernan Gomez brings the humanity of his role to life. This particular film will endure long after most current American pot boilers are forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars A story about absolution ..........2005-08-08

This is a wonderfully different movie that addresses a complex emotional theme in a very creative manner. The story revolves around a large upscale Spanish family. Fernando Fernán Gómez plays the part of patriarch, who is diagnosed with Cancer. However, he is a reluctant patient and secretly flushes his medicines in the toilet. He is extremely paranoid about a candid conspiracy and talks incoherently about a fountain, a train, a city with no limits and a person called Rancel. This behavior forces his family member to believe that his mind is going senile. He finds some support in his youngest son, Victor (the very talented, Leonardo Sbaraglia).
Suspiciously, the symptoms of his father's cancer are not very distinctly obvious and yet his wife Geraldine Chaplin) and other two sons insist on him getting operated. They seem to be running with an ulterior motive of closing a big business deal.
Victor is very close to his father and decides to unearth the seemingly fictitious Rancel. Some clever investigation leads him to Rancel, who is a famous novelist and had been an underground republican during the troubled Spanish times. Rancel and Victor's father were planning a covert escape, but Victor's father backed out at the last moment (motivated by Victor's mother) leading to Rancel's arrest and incarceration. Victor's father couldn't forgive himself for quisling and lead a life of repent. He wants to relive the moment and save Rancel from getting incarcerated. Victor helps his father touch absolution before his death. The father-child relationship is very touching.

Each character in the movie has his/her own little story that has been mingled with the main storyline to perfection. Victor, himself is fighting a little battle between temptation (his brother's wife) and self-righteousness. His choosing the correct self-righteous path has been depicted in a very subtle manner.
The story, cinematography, acting and background score, have all been woven to near perfection by the director. Impressive stuff!!

The members of his family, including his wife, Marie (Geraldine Chaplin), have gathered around him there. Victor (Leonardo Sbaraglia), the youngest son and last to arrive in Paris, lives in Argentina and has no ties to the family business. He sees Max, who is becoming incoherent and confused, secretly throwing away his medicine, pretending to sleep, and attempting to escape from the hospital. Victor notices that Max appears to be afraid of something, but he can't tell if his fear is well founded or if he is just delusional.
