Amazon.com
When undercover cop Jack Valentine (Mario Van Peebles) fails to protect his mob witness, the witness's girlfriend, Alma (Zerha Leverman), becomes his only chance to save his badge. But sleeping with her turns out to be a bad idea, since luckless Jack once before slept with a witness and the conflict of interest led to her demise. So you know this new one is a goner, too. See, the title's ironic. Forget it, Jack... it's Chinatown. Solid performances all around from Van Peebles, Rae Dawn Chong, and Randy Quaid, in a too-obvious script. Yet the film tries for, and to a large extent achieves, prime-time cop-show production values à la Homicide, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order. Relative newcomer Leverman turns in a standout performance as the seductive witness and manages to invest her character at once with signs of a disturbing past and a hypnotic sensuality. Also known as Valentine's Day. --Jim Gay

Thai-born martial artist Tony Jaa, whose gravity-defying stunts wowed American audiences in Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior, returns in an equally eye-popping stunt fest that should thrill all but the most jaded action fans. The very simple plot has the soft-spoken, mild-mannered Jaa as a young man from a rural community dispatched to Australia to recover a pair of sacred elephants. Once there, he discovered that a female crime boss (played by transgendered actor Jing Xing) is behind the missing pachyderms, and Jaa pulls out all the stops to recover the animals for his village. As in Ong-Bak, the appeal of The Protector is watching Jaa unleash his muay thai skills on a host of villainous types, and he gets several astonishing showcases in this film, most notably a nearly-unbroken take in which he dispatches some 50 goons as he makes his way up a four-story structure. Those looking for the depth of story or character found in the best of Hong Kong action cinema won't find it in The Protector, but the rewards for action fans are plentiful and thoroughly entertaining. The two-disc Collector's Edition of The Protector includes a wealth of extras, most notably the original Thai version of the film (titled Tom Yum Goong), which runs approximately 30 minutes longer than the American version. Commentary by martial arts writer and fan Bey Logan is featured on the American edit, along with a deleted scene, a featurette about Jaa with Logan and rapper/producer The RZA (who scored the American version and, for some reason, is described as a major force in bringing Asian entertainment to the States), making-of featurettes on both the English and Thai versions of the film (the latter features a subtitled Thai-language commentary track with Jaa, director Prachya Pinkaew, and stunt coordinator/mentor Panna Rittikrai), and three fair short films that were produced for a promotional tie-in contest. -- Paul Gaita
Description
Thai martial arts virtuoso Tony Jaa stars as Kham, who travels to Australia to take on a gang and rescue a kidnapped elephant.

Another Movie I'm Drawn On..........2007-06-26
I can't give this a 5. I am a person who is interested in movie plots, and the plot for this movie was ridiculous! All of this over a elephant? LMAO. That's all I could think as I watched this. And while the action was pretty good, I think this movie went overboard with it. This movie was one long fight scene to me. You mean to tell me one person can take on 30 people AT ONE TIME and barely be harmed?!?! And also, after fighting and beating about 80 people he was almost beaten by one woman?!!? I know this is meant to be an action film which is why I'm not too harsh on the weak plot, but even the action was a little too much.
Best martial arts action since Bruce Lee...you have to see it believe it.......2007-06-19
Comparing this to Bruce Lee films, this movie could of replaced "The Game Of Death", as the final film worthy of anything close to Bruce's work.
Its jaw dropping. And Tony Jaa is actually, literally doing every move you see him doing in the movie. No wires, no CGI. He is a very special individual, who is definatly his own person.
The movie is to be watched for fun. This is classic martial arts moviedom...not just a bunch of laughable "high art" the likes of "HERO".
If anyone loved Bruce Lee's movies, like The Big Boss, or The Chinese Connection, or Fist Of Fury, this movie "The Protector" , i believe, would of made Bruce Lee proud.
Tony Jaa is the closest one ive ever witnessed to even carry honorable or deserved comparison to the greatness that Bruce Lee performed on film.
He is the next great martial arts super star of the big screen.
This is a classic. And is done in pretty good taste. And is lots and lots of fun. I was very impressed and inspired after seeing this film.
It is Thailands turn to show the world what theyve got.
And what theyve got is the greatest martial art star since Bruce Lee himself....
...TONY JAA.
Ya gotta see it to believe it!
action-packed slug fest........2007-05-27
Thin plotted like the other one, but another Tony Jaa action banquet.
bad editing job.......2007-05-21
This movie was a headache to watch. The sequences throughout the film aren't really smooth and consistent. I found myself saying "hey, wait a minute". I thought that maybe I wasn't paying attention to the movie but then quickly figured out that it was the "style" of the film.
Plus, as a Deaf person, I found myself having to switch back and forth with the subtitles and captions. Some scenes are spoken in Thai, which are subtitled. However, once English is spoken, I had to switch to captions. Usually, the captions or subtitles will take care of everything...not this film.
Anyways, this movie is about avenging the theft of royal elephants (and the death of one), which were raised for the king's service. So, Kham is sent to Australia to return the elephants. Simple plot.
What I loved about this movie was the fight scenes. I found myself grimacing as I saw these scenes. I don't think I've ever seen one man fight against so many people...not even with Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.
Jaa does it again! Only BIGGER!.......2007-04-29
Wow, this guy just gets better and better. I was worried 20 minutes or so into the movie as there'd been no action to speak of -- what an idiot! Just like in Ong Bak, there's a slow build up and then it's just 80+ minutes or so of pure butt-kicking action.
The fight in the temple is superb. The pre-finale battle with the joint breaking is incredible. But!!! The staircase scene. Oh, man! Can this boy fight or what! Initially I wondered what the hell was going on as some of the action is off-screen - dumb of what, this is an action film, SHOW THE ACTION. Yeah, like second time I was an idiot. Then you realise the entire, extended fight scene is shot entirely in one take using one camera - hence some strange angles. WOW! That really puts this guy in perspective. Look at some of our western movie 'heros' - take Matt Damon in all the Borne movies. The tiniest bit of hand-to-hand fighting and there's hundreds of camera shots and an editing frenzy like the editor's tripping. Why? Because Damon can't fight, so they make up for it with 'slick' photography. Stick Tony Jaa in a room with one camera and 20 bad guys and watch this guy burn every last one - one take, one angle, NO TRICKS.
Jaa is a phenomena. Has to be seen to be believed. And with the subject matter - while it might seem sappy to some, it looks like the guy actually might have heart too. Can't wait for his next movie.

Classic wartime movie.......2007-06-13
I first saw this movie in college in about 1976 and was completely bowled over by the movie. I found a copy of it on VHS a few years ago and remembered why it had impacted me. The movie seems to recreate the feel of an occupied country and Anton Diffring portrays Heydrich with a quiet deadliness that is chilling. The final scenes in the church are absolutely stunning. A fabulous movie that will intrigue and entrance you
we must remember them.......2007-05-14
A recent holiday in Prague led me to a church where the actual events to the movie unfolded.Intrigud by the story I traced a copy of the film on d.v.d through Amazon.Totally blown away by the ending and unusally for me moved to tears.Booked another flight to Prague just to lay flowers back at the church.
Great War Drama & a Must Have for any War Movie Buff!.......2007-05-03
Where is the DVD, we are waiting! Saw this movie probably over 15 years ago, but have not been able to buy it; should definitely be released on DVD! A great all around war drama with action, suspense & a tremendous ending that you won't forget! It is also based on a true story which makes it all the more great! A must have movie for any war movie buff!
There are real heroes in this world........2006-02-19
This is a true story. A story of heroes. I don't know just why but this film captivates from the very first scenes. The Germans speak in German with no subtitles. The Czechs speak in natural English. You feel occupation in every still. The filming is stunning from the parachute drop in the snow to the beauty of Prague's squares.
This film is haunting and stirring and majestic. It will stay with you long after the last desperate stand is over. This needs a new release n DVD.

DVD.......2007-06-28
I love this DVD because it has japanese, japanese with english subtitles, and dubbed english. At first the menu is a bit unorganized but it was not an inconvienience. I do not think the english subtitles for the japanese moved too fast. The dvd came with a hologram cover thing that peels of so I put it in my locker. :)
Amazingly Funny.......2007-06-23
Bobobo is a very quirky and random anime. They are constantly cracking jokes and making parodies of other manga and anime. I really enjoy watching this and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys anime and over the top humor.

A Lot Of People Have Been Giving The Bobobo DVD A Bad Name Here Are The So Called Really Bad Problems People Have Been Complianing About...
1. No Subtitles For Japanese Dialouge And Are Too Fast.
This Same Problem Is On Disney/Ghibli DVDs Too You Know.
Also The Subtitles Are Fast But not Really Fast All The Time.
2.End Credits.
Someone Was complianing about the Squishing Of The End Credits.
Has This Person Not Seen The Ending Of The Final DBZ Film In English. There You Just Get Little Square.
Above All The Only Promlems are That The Menu IS Loud and I mean LOUD. And Unless you are deaf,When Two People Are Talking The Subtites Make It Look One Person Is Talking.
Anyone Who Is A True Bobobo Fan (or If Your Just Getting Into It) Should Buy (Or Rent) This DVD...BUT PICKLES YOU CAN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Great Show, Flawed DVD.......2007-02-20
Bobobo has been one of my favorite anime for a while and I'm glad to see that it's finally getting an unedited DVD release. It's not for everyone but if you like extremely weird, wacky, and random humor Bobobo is for you.
Now about the DVD itself. First the good news, it's unedited, has good video quality, and the english dub, while heavily localized in spots, is very good. Unfortunately, the lack of proper subtitles to accompnay the Japanese language track is a huge problem. Instead we just get the closed captioning text for the English version. Plus, they don't even stay on the screen long enough for anyone except a speed reader. These problems, and a few other more minor flaws knocked two stars off my rating.
If you don't mind sticking to the English dub or can speak Japanese the problems won't bother you too much. And, short of imports or illegal downloads this is the only way to get your hands on an excellent show.

In Jackie Chan's first American movie, Chan and Danny Aiello (Do the Right Thing, Moonstruck) are cops who don't play by the rules. They're sent to Hong Kong to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a wealthy New York scumbag who's mixed up with an insidious heroin kingpin; to investigate, they go to a massage parlor, where the women try to kill them in the middle of providing sexual favors. It's not surprising that the gunplay is mundane, but even Chan's fight sequences are banal and unsurprising. The only entertainment value comes from absurdities, like a band of carjackers dressed like Adam and the Ants, or a sequence where it's revealed that the smuggled heroin is stashed inside of melons--and the stashing process is, inexplicably, performed by naked women. Jackie also swears; apparently the director thought he was making a Dirty Harry movie. An embarrassment. --Bret Fetzer

Protector 4 stars.......2007-03-09
Exciting film from start to finish. Early Chan U.S. movie ( his first or second ).Remember when Statue of Liberty was being renavated ?
Police Story is excellent film than The Protector and The Protector is not family film........2006-02-25
Last Tuesday night I was watching The Protector DVD and I felt not enjoy and disappointed of The Protector is very bad film (HK version and USA verison) because it's too much nude scenes, too much swear, too much violence, poor story, poor peformances and Jackie Chan was difficult actor in The Protector film.
I am warning you that The Protector is not family/children movie and The Protector is adult film. My advice to you about please do not buy it and if you do really wanting watch it, better wait see on TV or rent DVD shop.
My favourite Jackie Chan's cop films is called Police Story trilogy, New Police Story, Rush Hour 1 & 2, The Medallion are brilliant films because it's excellent comedy, martial art action scenes, kung fu, excellent story, excellent performances, excellent Jackie Chan actor, it can for family/children movie.
ORIGINAL IS WAAY BETTER~!.......2006-02-05
If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL
Misunderstood.......2006-01-14
I haven't read all the reviews for this film so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this stuff, but...
The producers, etc. didn't get what made Jackie successful in Hong Kong and rather than make a "Jackie Chan" film and inviting his input, they tried to make him 'fit' Hollywood and made a typical cop flick starring Chan. The film works for what it was, but falls short of what a true Jackie Chan film can be.
The reviewer for Amazon apparently missed the point of the naked women processing the drugs stating their nakedness was "inexplicable". Although not stated in the movie (perhaps the reason why he didn't get it?) the women are nude to prevent them from stealing from the drug dealers by hiding some in their clothing (obviously they do have one or two places they could hide it, but we won't get into that).
Obviously this isn't Jackie's finest hour, but taken for what it is, overall not a bad film. Danny Aiello is a riot.
THIS MOVIE'S NOT TRUE TO JACKIE CHAN'S LEGACY!.......2004-06-07
TWO COPS [JACKIE CHAN AND DANNY AIELLO] TRY TO BUST UP A MAJOR DRUG OPERATION. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THAT JACKIE CHAN TRYED TO BREAK INTO THE AMERICAN MARKET. AND LIKE THE FIRST TIME [HIS FIRST AMERICAN MOVIE WAS ''THE BIG BRAWL''], THIS FAILED AT BEING A HIT. BUT UNLIKE ''THE BIG BRAWL'', THIS MOVIE WAS PRETTY BORING, DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT HAS SOME GOOD ACTION SCENES. BUT, JACKIE DOES BEHAVE REALLY REALLY DIFFERENT IN THIS MOVIE, AS OPPOSED TO SOME OF HIS OTHER MOVIES. IN THIS MOVIE, JACKIE DROPS THE F BOMB [SEVERAL TIMES AT THAT], JACKIE TREATS WOMEN WITH LITTLE RESPECT, AND HE'S REALLY QUICK TO USE EXCESSIVE FORCE. WHAT RUINS THIS MOVIE IS THE FACT THAT JACKIE TRYS TO BE TOO SERIOUS AND THE FACT THAT JACKIE NEVER REALLY GETS A FAIR CHANCE TO FULLY SHOW OFF HIS AMAZING MARTIAL ARTS SKILLS. FANS OF JACKIE CHAN MIGHT WATCH THIS OUTTA CURIOSITY. BUT, IF YOU DO WATCH THIS, WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON TV OR RENT IT. BUT DON'T BUY THIS.

--Jim Gay
Customer Reviews:
Has little value.......1999-02-02
The plot is very thin, so the producers has to resort to a lot of female flesh to keep the male audience awake. This is the type of story that if you were to condense it by just the story line that was important to developing the plot, you could view it all in 30 mins. Sorry, because some good performances are wasted here.

Description
The Lord Protector stars Patrick Cassidy as the dauntless hero charged with saving his world from imminent destruction. The voice of Charlton Heston sets the stage as our hero begins his quest to unravel "The Riddle of the Chosen."
His journey takes him on adventures throughout the kingdom, forming alliances and surmounting enemies. He teams with Malthon and Lady Diamond as they travel ever closer to the core of evil.

If you love "bad" films..........2007-04-04
This one tries hard. It really does. However, it falls flat. One actor; Jonathan Fuller AKA "Malthon" gives a stellar performance, and saves the film from the bin! He should get an award for his acting, but could it just be that his being surrounded by bad acting makes him look all that much better? Naw!
Good idea, badly pulled off. Maybe a rewrite and reshoot is what it needs. Not too bad if you're in the right mood, so if you like "B" movies, and you are in a forgiving mood...
Narrated by Charleton Heston and has a short scene with the lucious Musetta Vander. It's my opinion that you'd have to be an intoxicated festie after a five or six week run to love it. The swordfights look pretty good though, if a bit slow for the movies. ;)
A standard "quest" movie to save the world... (What else) from an ancient evil that is about to be unleashed by an evil sorcerer... You'll laugh, you'll cry, because you'll be bored to tears! (A dear friend of mine invested in it about a decade ago and lost his shirt... I bought a copy anyway. ;) Call me a glutton for punishment, as I've seen it about 8 times.
um?.......2007-01-05
Wow, I had such high hopes for this movie just from the cover shots. I don't think anything you see on the cover actually happens in the movie nor do I think most of the characters on the cover are anywhere in the film. Even still I had high hopes for it as a laugh-at b-movie; I fell asleep instead.
Quite possibly the worst movie in the world!.......2006-09-26
If there was ever such a thing as a horrible, terrible, pathetic film, worse than you can imagine, THIS WOULD BE IT!!! Ten years ago, my family invested money for this movie and we were all invited to see the premiere of this film at one of Hollywood CA's most beautiful theaters, only to be bored silly by amateurish special effects, terrible acting, and perhaps the worst script of all time. All this has left us guilty of sitting through the whole thing. How could anyone who knows better enjoy this awful film. It's complete garbage!!! The only reason I gave this one star is because the posting screen will not allow me to rate it zero or negative stars. It doesn't belong on my shelf; it belongs in my bathroom toilet! [hahaha] Under no circumstances should you spend any money on this movie, renting or buying. If you love sci-fi action movies and want to hear them narrated without cringing, get the "Lord of the Rings" films. For grade school kids, try "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" or any of the animated 1970s adaptations of LOTR.
The best in B-Fantasy film genre!.......2005-03-14
My discovery of this film was nothing short of destiny.
Though I had passed it by many a time on the shelf of my favorite video store, never had I given it a second glance. It took the combined forces of my younger brothers' obsessive interest in Ren-fest period pieces and a complete lack of anything to do on Saturday night to bestow this gift of badness to us.
Before anything else is said, let me state with complete sincerity that I love of bad movies and it has always been my opinion that what makes the best bad movies is the complete and utterly unshakable belief on the part of cast and crew that what they are making is a good movie. It is this belief (which cannot be imitated) that actually does shine through in the final project and in so doing, creates (in its own way) a good-bad movie.
That said; the acting is (mostly) bad, the effects unspectacular, the plot unsurprising, the costumes range from decent to something you'd see in an old Star Trek episode , (most of) the sets lack texture, the sound is fairly decent throughout, the fight scenes are actually pretty good, and the cheese factor is powerfully compelling.
I've chosen not to point out any specific scenes or examples from the movie because I really want you to go in fresh and witness this magnificent gift of B-movie genius for yourselves.
However, with a word to the family oriented viewer, let me say the PG rating does give a fairly accurate description of what you can expect. Which means no nudity and very little profanity, but enough glimmering b-movie miracle power to keep most lovers of fantasy and sci-fi interested anyway ... what with the gratuitous violence and all.
And if the rumors I've heard about a sequel are true, I can't wait to go pick up a copy on purpose.
