Roger Corman produced this shameless Jaws rip-off at the height of the "nature gone wild" boom of American cinema and struck B-movie gold. Scripted by John Sayles and directed by Joe Dante, this tongue-in-cheek thriller stars Bradford Dillman (doing his best Rip Torn impression) as an antisocial mountain man and Heather Menzies as a rookie detective who race a school of mutant piranha downriver. Dante and Sayles provide the requisite blood and gore for this drive-in meat market: a kids' summer camp and a waterfront amusement park await the little beasties. Along the way, riverside retiree Keenan Wynn gets his ankles stripped clean, camp counselor Paul Bartel is chomped on the cheek by a hungry little bugger who takes to the air, and hordes of unlucky bathers are caught in the center of a feeding frenzy. What differentiates this little gem from the legion of similar knockoffs are the satirical swipes at military arrogance and crass commercialism, Dante's energetic enthusiasm, and the bursts of black humor: "Lost River Lake: Terror, horror, death. Film at 11." The culty cast also includes Invasion of the Body Snatchers's Kevin McCarthy as the hysterical scientist guarding the creatures, horror diva Barbara Steele as a devious government researcher, and longtime Corman regular Dick Miller as an unscrupulous entrepreneur ("Sir, the piranha are eating the guests").
The DVD features good-humored commentary by director Joe Dante and producer Jon Davison, who also narrate the 10 minutes of good-quality home-movie footage shot by Davison. There are also six minutes of outtakes. --Sean Axmaker

Locals will get a kick out this.......2007-04-21
This film was made at Aquarena Springs resort in San Marcos, Texas, home of Texas State University, the school President LBJ graduated from. The resort used to have mermaids and scuba divers put on a show along with a swimming pig. The university bought the park in the early 1990s to use as a preserve and to study water and environmental resource issues. The area it was filmed in is the most constantly inhabited region in all of North America, with records showing a continuous presence for more than 5,000 years straight. Piranha is not the only film shot in San Marcos, a lazy college town in between Austin and San Antonio, as the films The Getaway and The Ringer are two others that were made here. Although we don't have nearly as many films made here as Austin (Austin is probably the fourth biggest film city in the US behind New York, LA and Chicago), it's cool to know we attract filmmakers. Viewers will get nostalgic to see the old Aquarena Springs and a time when San Marcos was small, even more laid back and uncorrupted by corporate chains. If you like silly, tongue in cheek flicks on a shoe string budget, you'll like Piranha. Joe Dante got his start directing films like this before he went on to make it big with Gremlins....
Scary, but a short film..........2007-04-04
I don't know whether to give this film (3)stars or (4). I saw this movie I believe in the 1980's I was born in 1974, so to young to know about this film all the way. During the 80's when I saw this film it was quiet scary, now after just watching this movie in 2007, well its still scary but its alittle rusty from over the years. The one disappointment is the film is a tad bit to short of a film. Maybe back in the 1970's this was normal, maybe not. It really just came and went. At the end there's not really a clear understanding if the poison actually kill most of them or what? Now there is a Part 2 movie on Piranha, which even at the end of this movie she says they can't survive in the ocean, but they do, thus spawns a Part 2. Overall, this is a good movie for its time, and the special effects are good for a 1978 film. Its worth a watch.
Jaws it isn't, but it's definitely worth a watch.......2007-01-10
Somehow this B horror movie manages to be entirely ridiculous, and yet still entertain. Piranha walks the thin line between intentionally campy and seriously trying to scare. And it does so better than most horror films. I think the grainy films of the 70's just work better for horror. When everything's crisp you actually have to have good acting, good script, and good effects.
This film has a mediocre amount of all three of those. The piranha (genetically altered by the government, MUTANT piranha, I mean) are never really seen clearly, so their realism isn't that big a deal. The plot revolves around some campers that go missing and a woman sent to find them. She somehow immediately decides they must have disappeared at the old abandoned military facility and breaks through the locked gate to get in. Then she decides to drain their pool to see if the bodies are there, unknowingly releasing mutant piranhas into a quiet Texas river.
What ensues is one of the sillier horror/action(?) escapades ever on the screen. The two heros travel down the river on a makeshift raft to warn everyone of the piranhas and make sure that the dam doesn't get opened, releasing the piranha on to a children's summer camp.
Of course, the piranha know when anyone is in the river at any point throughout and will be there to nibble them apart in a matter of seconds. Anyway, the film never bores and the gore is pretty believable. It's also got the gratuitous breast flashing expected in early horror movies, and the open ending.
The best part of the DVD is the blooper reel. If I had my way, every movie would have a blooper reel. This one is especially good, because they're from the 70's. How many blooper reels are 30 years old?
I'l have a little bite of this and a little bite of that..........2006-04-07
This film has various things going on in it. At times it is quite funny and tongue-in-cheek. But it does have it's ominous moments. One that stands out the most is when the summer camp kids are being nibbled on and watch their nice counselor get taken down by the relentless fish. The music during that scene is intense. But it doesn't stay too serious for very long. Not when we still have a large supply of annoying tourists to take care of down the river.
Here's the thing with a film like this: If you don't like your humour dark, you're not going to like it. But if you appreciate a good helping of cheese in your film diet, this film should fill you up. Happy Eating!!!
Piranha (1978).......2006-01-09
Director: Joe Dante
Cast: Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, Kevin McCarthy, Keenan Wynn, Dick Miller, Barbara Steele, Belinda Balaski, Melody Thomas Scott, Bruce Gordon.
Running Time: 94 minutes
Rated R for violence, gore, language, and nudity.
Piranha" is a very engaging and often gross film, filled with tongue-in-cheek humor and very rich on cult aspects. Joe Dante's directing is sublime and John Sayles' screenplay ("Alligator", "The Howling") terrifically blends black parody with genuine chills and exciting action. The story is well set in a remote Texas area where the mad scientist Robert Hoak (good supportive role by Kevin McCarthy) is still working on a new secret weapon to use in the Vietnam War, even though it's already over. 'Operation Razorteeth' revolves on artificially bred piranhas that are able to survive in cold saltwater and they reproduce at a dazzling speed. When the perky investigator Maggie (Heather Menzies) and the estranged drunk Paul (Bradford Dillman) accidentally allow these finned flesh-eaters to escape in the local river, it's up to themselves again to save the nearby tourist attractions from the ravenous little monsters. That's certainly not an easy thing to achieve, considering the fact there are many corrupt politicians, businessmen and army commanders who attempt to cover the whole thing up.
"Piranha" is yet another fine example to demonstrate that the 70's were the most outrageous years for horror cinema. The witty script generally steals wholesale from Spielberg's "Jaws", but it's unscrupulous enough to add social mockery and even clean images of innocent children getting slaughtered. Throw in some extra sleaze, camp, absurd characters and stylish music and you've got yourself one of the very rare true American exploitation movies. Like it's pretty much the trademark of director Joe Dante ("The Howling", "Gremlins"), he stuffs his film with cinematic in-jokes and endless references towards other genre classics. The nasty little fishes devour their human victims in gruesome ways and what's left over isn't exactly pretty to look at. Bradford Dillman and Heather Menzies do well as the leads, but its supporting cast in particular that is worth naming. The "Roger Corman" regulars Dick Miller, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Bartel shine as the hypocrite and greedy Texans, but the casting choice that is the most appealing is Barbara Steele as the female scientist Dr. Menders. The pace of the film is good, and while the script shows some holes, the plot usually lasts out. It gets a bit hectic towards the end and Dante would have been better served with less carnage and more tension to give the movie a better finale. The effects are pretty much non-existent, as the movie just uses cuts of fish swimming and a bit of fake blood for most of it's shocks. Still, this is a very fun movie and one that people who enjoy a good time will enjoy.

Description
When redneck dirt-farmers accidentally drink a barrel of nuclear waste they transform into tobacco chewing, flesh eating, cannibal kinfolk from hell! Meanwhile, seven sophisticated city slickers on vacation get lost in the woods and encounter a nightmare world of these illiterate, and extremely hungry, undead appalachains. While the tourists hikers use all their wits and courage to stay alive, more and more "down-home" types imbibe the nasty brew until Redneck Zombies are everywhere. What started as a scenic nature-hike turns into a bloodbath of dismemberment and cannibalism! Redneck Zombies, the directorial debut of effects genius Pericles Lewnes (Troma's War, Toxic Avenger Part II and III), was the first feature film shot on video!
Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff!.......2007-06-17
This is definitely one of my favorite movies. It has bad acting. Bad script. Silly gags. Disgusting situations. Tons of gore. Nonsensical activity. It has everything that makes a great bad movie! Now, if you don't like movies that are campy, cheap, silly, over-the-top (or whatever other term you want to use), then you obviously won't like this one. You shouldn't even rent it. In fact, you shouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole--because this is one of the best bad movies ever made.
Yes, the acting is bad, but the key is that it's not boring. Yes, the script isn't going to win any awards, but it's not boring. Yes, the gags... well, I think you see the pattern. This isn't a sophisticated movie--it never pretends or tries to be. It's just a *fun* movie. What I really don't understand are the bad reviews here by people who say they like campy horror movies. I don't doubt their sincerity or honesty, I just don't understand how they couldn't at least give this movie a pass.
So, what is so good about this movie in my opinion? Let me count the ways! (a cheesy movie deserves a somewhat cheesy review) First, I loved the sound effects and music. I don't like country music, but the theme for this movie is just awesome, and much of the other sounds in the movie emphasise the campiness of the movie, but in a good way. Second, this movie has a lot of funny and memorable jokes. One of my favorites is when an illiterate farmer is looking at a barrel of nuclear waste, and in trying to read what is on the side of the container, points at it and says "Do not... open till... Christmas," with the last word being represented by a nuclear symbol. This movie is full of such silly jokes and campy dialogue.
Third, the movie gives you lots of things to think about, though because of the otherwise silly context, it never seems overbearing or condescending. Really, these situations just seem really wierd until you try to think about what is being said. One example of this involved a tied up girl on a couch, a really strange guy sitting next to her, and images of baby chickens being slaughtered on tv. It's freaky; it also makes you ask "what the hell is THAT about?"
Fourth, for such a campy movie, the characters are actually fairly well established early on, and developed nicely throughout the movie. In fact, there's a lot more characterization involved here than in most hollywood block busters. If you actually like this movie, you won't easily forget Ellie May, or the drunk mute guy, or the Tobacco man. The characters here are definitely not your cookie cutter horror movie kills-waiting-to-happen.
And the fifth reason that I love this movie... it's unabashedly consistent, fun cheesiness. It doesn't try to be your typical horror-comedy, it's just total silliness (e.g., the kills are gory, but not gruesome).
If you're a fan of horror-comedy and/or silly low-budget movies, then I'd definitely recommend this one. It's one of the best that I've seen.
5 stars for a few reasons.......2006-09-02
Normally a movie of such low budget and acting skills would not receive about 3 stars. There are a few reasons why I have given it 4 stars.
1. The ending of the film is great. Most low budget zombie films are good until the ending.
2. The scenes of the people running away from the zombies are creative and funny. This movie was made over 10 years ago and used the comedy part of a man acting like a zombie to avoid being lunch.
3. The strange rednecks bring characters to each of the zombies instead of random walking rotting corpses.
4. The guy drinking various alcohols in each scene is great.
5. Each time you watch it, you catch something new.
6. Zombies don't look like video game zombies like the ones in "House of the Dead" and other bad films like that. Zombies are bad but bad in a funny way.
7. Using the still to spread the zombie plague is great. Even how the moonshine is dropped off shows a few classic scenes.
one of the best crappy movies.......2006-05-04
This is def. a real "B" or Indie movie, shot on video. But as far as super low budget zombie movies, this is the best. Seems to be around the same budget as films like Flesh Freaks, and Dead Life for example and this blows them out of the water. Its funny and gory..holds true to TROMA Entertainment. Noticable influences from The Toxic Avenger, Zombie, and Day of The Dead. If your a zombie or troma fan, buy this dvd.
The movie is as bad (good) as the title!!!.......2006-02-27
This is one of the funniest movies evermade, it is also incredibly gory. I don't
know what the other viewers were expecting when they watched this fantastically horrible piece of garbage but if you go in watching with incredibly low expectations, like I did, you will be very happy. This movie is best viewed with a like minded friend so that someone is there to laugh when you make a third rate MST3K comment. If you like anything from Troma you must buy this movie.
REDNECK ZOMBIES - THE DIRECTOR'S CUT DVD REVIEW:.......2006-02-05
Obviously this movie is crap, what do you expect? I knew before watching this movie it was going to be s##t. This type of movie is suppose to be funny even though it is listed under the horror category in your local video store.
FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN WATCHING THIS MOVIE, GET REALLY HIGH OR DO SOME KIND OF DRUG BEFORE YOU WATCH IT.

hate it!.......2007-06-03
The acting is lousy, the only good actor is Lance Henriksen.
The piranha looks like little toys with flapping wings.
The music is totally wrong, instead of becoming intense and scary during killing, there's barely any music at all.
Avoid at all cost, there is NOTHING worth seeing in this movie... unless you want to see it because IT IS so bad!
Movie good. Putting effort in the dvd BAD.......2006-07-17
This movie was pretty good I thought for the time of release, Bad thing about the dvd is that I waited for years to see the Normal ratio which is Widescreen presentation and it was only made for dvd full screen. It states on the back of the dvd either widescreen or full screen but they never made the widescreen so why put it? If you get this movie you should wait and see IF they make it in widescreen mode unless the dvd comes down from 20.00 to 2.00. thats when I will buy the full screen if its not redone again.
Quite the surprise.......2006-04-02
I rate this movie 5 stars for what it is, a silly horror film. It was also a very pleasant surprise.
When I first viewed this movie I wasn't expecting much, except an awful american horror movie... I was a bit off!
I had a good time watching Piranha 2, there were many times I had to laugh;
- The opening sequence where the viewer is treated some T&A and pirahna mayhem
- The "drowning" scene and the dialogue that followed("You're not a doctor!?!?!!" "I'm a Dentist".)
- The flying fish effects
- Portions of plot that are simply dropped and never revisited, etc.
If you like Horror films, with touches of comedy, and a "Euro" flavour, give Piranha 2 a go! I enjoyed this moreso than Tentacles!
PRETTY GOOD..............2005-03-02
I like this movie despite its lousy storyline. The concept of flying piranha eating people was pretty good and the movie has its scary moments. The piranha effect was fake but acceptable considering the movie was made more than 10 years ago. The music score was not bad. A fun watch.
Interesting trivia facts.......2004-09-14
James Cameron only worked on this movie for one week before he was fired (and then replaced) by the producer, Ovidio G. Assonitis. Ovidio wasn't satisfied with James' progress, for some reason (can't imagine why). Cameron did most of the camera work, but Assonitis did the editing, cutting Cameron out of the loop (as it were). Cameron actually broke into the editing room once to try and repair the damage (to his reputation, if nothing else). Alas, he was caught...just like the fish in this movie!

A National Geographic Special For Psychotics..........2006-09-12
A photographer and her brother go to Venezuela on a quest to see one of the last undisturbed places on earth. Their guide takes them deep into the rainforests, where they meet up w/ Caribé (William "Invasion Of The Bee-Girls" Smith), whose name actually means piranha! Caribé acts like a total nut from the start, but our heroes ignore his weirdness and let him take them even further into the middle of nowhere! Along the way, Caribé shoots just about any animal in his path, putting the photographer gal's nerves on edge since she abhores guns and violence. While watching this unfold, I kept yelling at the screen, "Why are you idiots following this maniac?!" Well, my cries went unheeded, as the ding-a-lings went right on following! In true early 70s fashion, the final 20 minutes hold most (in this case ALL) of the suspense. Caribé reveals his true eeevil self. "DUH!", I screamed at my television! Anyway, I'd recommend hitting the old FF button during the wilderness and diamond mining footage, leaving a nice little 45 minute movie...
Stock Footage, Stock Footage!.......2005-12-18
With a title like "Piranha, Piranha" you might expect to see a few piranhas in this movie. Don't be ridiculous: what you actually will see is unending scenes of industrial diamond mining, motorcycle racing, and absolutely unending hunks of stock footage of every kind of animal (mostly birds, but also lots of alligators and sloths) known to man. I would guess that literally over half the running time of the movie is stock footage.
The plot, as thin as it is, concerns a whiny female photographer and her accomplice going to Venezuela to photograph wildlife (hence the premise for the stock footage padding). Once in the jungle they meet a certifiable lunatic (who dabbles in sadism, rape, kidnapping, and killing exotic animals) who ends up chewing the scenery for the bulk of the movie. In the end almost everybody dies, and you will never guess the stirring conclusion. Well you would never guess it if you had zero brain cells, but a single-celled organism can figure out the ending about five minutes into the film.
This is not only not about piranhas (they are onscreen for maybe 15 seconds), it is not about much at all. Count yourself among the fortunate if you can somehow manage to fall asleep during this stinker. This film is truly amazing in its utter inability to either entertain or excite. Do not waste your time on this red herring, red herring.
Lacking a strong balance between piranha and birds!.......2004-09-06
Desperately seeking diamonds, a band of adventurers discover that life in the wild is not all fun and games. After traveling throughout the land on motorcycles and seeing several scenes of birds, they stop at a local pub to drink heavily and absorb the culture. As they become engulfed into the culture and the land, they gather the aid of a hunter named Caribe that has not only mastered a bike race, but also harbors a darker plan. When they arrive to their destination the sight of diamonds turns to dust as these friends are forced to play prey and predator with an evil that wears a familiar face.
William Gibson directs this poorly acted, scripted, and pause-ridden suspense thriller that is easily lost in the shuffle of modern day cinema. The low budget is very obvious as Gibson riddles the film with overlapping scenes of birds, birds, and more birds to fill time. We are even shown unending scenes of diamond mining and bike racing, leaving nothing to develop characters or story. We are even shorted on the title of this film as there are only two mentions of the flesh eating fish.
Back-stories are underdeveloped leaving us a lack of emotion for the main characters and building an emotionless climax that only gave us hope that the film was over. Nothing was worth saving in this film, unless you enjoy studying birds from different countries (outside of the one that the film takes place). Gibson missed the entire focus of this film and the final result reminds us of a preschooler's first collage where there were tons of images, massive amounts of glue, and no real structure.

Educational and Interesting........2003-01-27
I liked this dvd very much and can't find a reason to complain about it.
Not as I expected........2000-09-05
This DVD doesn't have much of Piranha scenes as I expected. The scene they keep repeating again and again looks as though it was shot in an aquarium. but the info is rather good.

My son liked it........2005-08-23
My son and I were looking for an educational DVD on Anaconda's. We watched the DVD together...however during the anaconda video it was talking about how anaconda's "mate". Then of course my 6yr old had all sorts of questions about that.
The piranha was alittle graphic for my taste on certain parts.
Educational.......2005-04-07
These videos give a good amount of information on Anacondas and Piranhas. The Anaconda had quite a few parts that you could barely hear the narration due to bad sound editing. But the information was overall pretty good. But if you're looking for an action, monster snake kind'a video go watch some fairytale Hollywood movie.
Sound mix has negative impact on otherwise good film.......2004-02-20
This film was interesting and informative about anacondas. However, the background music and noises were louder than the narration, so an otherwise good documentary became VERY frustrating to watch.
could be better.......2003-05-22
seem like the dvd was rushed the music track drowns the dialogue plus a few sloppy glitches here and there. You'll get to see some anaconda but of course the big ,very big ones are so reclusive and living in such remote areas that we don't get to see any of that.My children enjoyed but they Loved the movie!!!Anaconda.
Anaconda DVD.......2000-07-25
This is a really great documentary on Anacondas. Did you know that an Anaconda can swallow prey 3/4 of their size and over half of their body weight? Or how many predators their actually are that hunt these snakes, big or small? I didn't know any of this either, until I bought this DVD. Now another great DVD to add to my collection. Find out where Anacondas live, what they eat, and a bunch of little facts that can really add up in this great DVD!
