Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No More Knee Pain, Highly Recommended.......2007-01-02

I like this video because I see a genuine Tai Chi master teaching authentic forms.

Before I received this video I had been attending Tai Chi classes for more than 3 years. I constantly experienced sore knees after each class. After I followed this video a few times, my knee pain disappeared. In this video Master Ross' constant reminder: `Don't forget, adjust your....' helped me correct my postures. Now I use this video everyday to check my postures. I am grateful to the person who gave me this precious gift.

For students taking Tai Chi Classes this video is a useful supplement between classes.

This video is an excellent learning tool for beginners. Once you have learned this video course, you will have no problem moving on to the next level: an instructional video entitled "Tai Chi with David Dorian Ross" (a/k Tai Chi in Paradise).

For someone thinking of doing some workout having maximum health benefit with minimal time, this video will give you inspiration.

There is a bonus featured in this DVD in which Master Ross teaches the eight pieces of brocade, excellent.

I highly recommend this DVD.

1 out of 5 stars NOT A GOOD INTRO INTO TAI CHI.......2006-11-15

I feel a bit releived after reading some of the reviews on here. I thought I was too uncoordinated to get this down, but the left to right on this DVD is REALLY confusing. Once I get messed up, there's no getting it back. I DO NOT recommend this for anyone who is just starting out. It's not easy to pick up the flow. He goes from showing you the name of the movement and how to it, to telling you to mix them all together by name. I'm sorry, but when I am learning a movement, I can't remember what to do after only being told once. I am paying more attention to the movements and doing them correctly than I am to the names of them! I'm just left frustrated and wondering which DVD I should start with instead!

5 out of 5 stars Love This DVD.......2006-08-14

I completely agree with the reviewer who loves the A.M. Chi on this DVD. This has been a wonderful surprise. I've never been much of a morning person, but I now look forward to getting up a half hour earlier each day to do this routine. My energy level has definitely increased as well. The beach setting, the music, and the queing are excellent. It also seems to be perfect timing that as the routine ends, a gentle wave finally laps in to brush David-Dorian Ross's feet. I, too, am not as fond of the Tai Chi for Beginners section but intend to alternate it with several other tapes and DVD's I have of DDR's. His Tai Chi Daily Practice DVD is fabulous and I use it in conjunction with the A.M. Chi.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Bonus "A.M. Chi for Beginners" Segment.......2006-07-16

Yes, it's true the tai chi routine is a bit confusing initially as far as which direction to go, to follow the instructor. But with practice this can be overcome... Nonetheless, I've given this DVD 5 stars because I LOVE(!) the bonus "A.M. Chi for Beginners" workout which follows. I originally had it on video but so many people would borrow it somehow it never got returned to me. Well it's no longer available on video unfortunately. So I was thrilled beyond belief to find out I could get it on this tai chi DVD. I personally don't do the tai chi segment as my apartment is too small for all the leg work tai chi usually involves, but for qigong lovers the "A.M. Chi for Beginners" routine is well worth the price alone! (and requires little floor space). It's a classic and I'm surprised they don't have a separate DVD with that title for the throngs of us who loved it on video. And only 20 minutes long, so I can easily fit it into my schedule even on the busiest days. There are three parts to the 20 minute A.M. Chi routine, which was filmed at sunrise on a beautiful Maui beach: (1) "Gathering Chi from the 6 Directions and Mixing it in the Cauldron of the Body", (2) the classic "8 Pieces of Brocade" qigong series, and (3) "Opening the Heart". The movements are so easy to follow (no confusion here), and never fail to put me in that peaceful frame of mind to help get me through life's ups and downs. I look at this as my A.M. Chi DVD which just happens to have a bonus tai chi workout... In short, the tai chi segment might be disappointing for some, but the bonus track may just surpass your expectations.

3 out of 5 stars Mistakes are confusing.......2006-06-14

I agree with the reviews above. On the whole the video is fun but several mistakes keep it from from being the excellent product it could of been. The right/left issue was not easy for me to overcome and then there are several actual for mistakes. The biggest one is on Crane spreads wings. I had to go and reference several other sources to confirm which time the instructor did it right (The initial form is correct, the form used later is not.) If the instructor is versed in Tai-Chi how could he of not known he was doing it wrong? Nervous on camera? did he review the dvd and not catch that? or did they just say "oh well they will figure it out."

A properly edited/corrected version could go a long way in making this an item to truely recommend.

The cover touts it as "the reunion of martial arts, yoga, and meditation," but for those who have practiced those disciplines separately but not in combination, Cameron Shayne's Budokon Beginning Practice offers a fresh, even unique approach to a home exercise regimen. Yoga, martial arts, and meditation don't actually commingle in this approximately 38-minute program (also included is a version that's about 10 minutes shorter); a fairly traditional, 20-minute yoga practice (for creating "power through stillness") is followed by 15 minutes of martial arts ("power through movement") and about three minutes of meditation ("power through emptiness"). The yoga asanas, including forward bends, lunges, twists, standing poses, and several sun salutations, provide a good stretch and warm-up for the martial arts moves; the latter, with their short, vigorous punches and kicks mostly performed from a traditional "fighting stance," offer a contrast to the slower, deeper yoga postures, and the sequence of the two is genuinely invigorating. Shayne, a martial arts master who also knows his yoga, provides excellent instruction throughout, and easier versions of the yoga poses are demonstrated. There's also a "pose guide" option, accessible both separately and during the workout, to explicate all the poses and movements in greater detail. --Sam Graham

        Description

A rousing fusion of fast-paced Ashtanga yoga, explosive martial arts and life-affirming meditation, Cameron Shayne¹s Budokon system puts Eastern practices on a new plane. Anyone looking for a high-energy workout that also sharpens mental focus and brings a deeper feeling of purpose will find it on their own terms with Budokon. Shayne¹s personal energy and passionate mastery of all three disciplines is affecting; the kicks and punches are exhilarating; and the meditations are both grounding and eye opening.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good stretching for those who have moderate flexibility.......2007-06-18

To give you an idea of my ability, I have been doing yoga for over 5 years & most times can touch my nose to my knees in standing forward bend or seated forward bend & on a good day can do a full russian split.
The menu options are intro, easy workout, moderate & intense. The bonus has 10 min on kicking, an old video of him for advanced exercises & 1 min trailers of 6 other martial arts dvds. The production values are good, his speaking sound & lighting are nice. The camera work was very good. The camera stayed back to see his whole body almost at all times. Only occasionally to see where to put emphasis, such as seeing that he is standing on tip toes, or how to move into that stretch, etc. does the camera zoom in for just long enough to see, then stays back. There is no music except for the menu and at the end of each workout.
Sang H. Kim is alone on floor with natural beige tie-dye curtain behind him, black mat on the floor & 2 simple black/red/white Asian painting next to him on either side. He gives little instruction, though his English is clear & no problem understanding & tells you & shows you quick first, then has you do everything on the count of 8 for each side. He moves in a good pace so you just keep up, not get bored, but w/o music & everything counted it still bored me a little.
Intro is 8 min about how stretching is good & about how the dvd works.
Easy Workout: 20 min, basic necks, shoulder, arm, wrist circles, hip circles, leg stretches, yoga sitting fwd stretch, wide leg stretch normal & stretching to each foot, butterfly, bridge, child's pose, spine rocking, etc. All the stretches are done laying down, seated, kneeling or on knees. The same stretches almost any workout dvd has, maybe 1 or 2 different & some basic yoga ones for the everyday person. I didn't feel much, a little stretched out, but this was below my ability. There was a couple stretches at angles most dvds don't do but so far wasn't impressed.
Moderate Workout: 20 min, neck stretches w/hand pushing, wrist twists & pulling with ohter hand & each individual finger. Basic stretches like above, some little deeper, not really different then most workout dvds, more butterfly, sitting forward bend, wide angle, half attempt at split, lunges, ends in shoulder stand. Only a few moves were different the most basic stretch or yoga dvds. Most of the stretches are done laying down, seated, kneeling, on knees except shoulderstand. Most people who exercise at least semi-regularly should be able to handle this with no problem. I felt more stretched out, but still didn't feel that much.
Intense Workout: 16 min. Ok, this one was harder after doing the other 2 with only short breaks in between. This one was done much faster, like cardio speed for a few stretches & it did feel real good. It then slow down to some of the regular stretches. This one had more lunges with torso twisting, modified side angle pose, sitting wide angle stretch to each side, deeper side lunges to the ground, camel, bridge but only feet & skull on ground, wheel, etc.
By this time, my legs got rubbery. This one was more my speed & about now 1/3 of the moves were different & felt good. After doing all 3, the next day I only felt a tiny bit sore & a little stretched out, about what was to be expected after any 56 min of normal mainstream stretching.
Bonus Kicking: 10 min, is 2 general stretches, practicing slowly w/a chair & regular speed front kicks, side, back, roundhouse, spinning kick. The roundhouse he only shows one leg. His kicking is till very flexible & with great control.
Bonus Advanced Kicking Exercises: 7 min of him in 1988 with blue mat & looks like a gym. Lunges, wide angle fwd bend, lateral touching of the legs in wide angle, splits & he even touches his head to toes in that position, split & rolling back/forth.

Not sure if it was him or maybe they had to film it many times & was at the end of the night, but his energy seemed a bit low, careful. On the easy, moderate, intense workouts, 90% time I had more flexibility then him. I was expecting more body awareness considering he's a martial artist. Some of the stretches that weren't mainstream did flow & felt right, but there wasn't enough of them.
