So here's a portrait of yoga in the 21st Century: this ancient discipline, created thousands of years ago to enhance the meditative experience (the asanas or poses commonly used in hatha yoga were in fact designed to enable meditators to sit quietly, calmly and comfortably for hours on end), is now "a total body blast," with users urged to "get hard core" and "feel the groove," all so "your torso will look buff." At least that's how Ellen Barrett, the relentlessly sunny instructor featured in Crunch Yoga's Super SlimDown: Pilates Yoga Blend, sees it. But while that approach may sound pretty frightening to traditionalists, this can't in fairness be viewed as a typical yoga video; nor does Barrett, who commingles power yoga moves and what she describes as "core-conditioning power pilates," make any claims that it is. Many of the poses--including Warrior II, extended right angle, cobra, locust, and others--will certainly be familiar to yogis. But instead of holding these poses for several breaths, as is common, Barrett takes a more aerobic approach, "pulsing" in and out of positions as if this were a calisthenics class; while that doesn't do much to promote stretching, it does generate a lot of heat and calorie burning. Same goes for the pilates portions, which involve a lot of leg lifts, abdominal work, and other mat-based exercises. One might wish that the instruction were more detailed when it comes to proper breathing, alignment, and so on; it's also a bit paradoxical that while the "Crunch philosophy" states that their fitness programs are designed for "people from all walks of life regardless of shape, size, or ability," the only folks we see onscreen are uniformly attractive, bare-midriffed young women in amazing shape. But hey, whatever. Call it what you will, this is a fast-moving, reasonably challenging program that will likely find favor with many. --Sam Graham

Starts of with the variations of warrior and triangle poses which are just adequate yoga moves to get you warmed up and body awakened. A bit rhythmical which takes the bore off the yoga. It ascends to a sneaky mat-cardio in the middle part. The backwork is excellent: variation of superman (swan), alternate arm and leg lifts on table top position- like what she says in "the benefits are amazing". Ellen Barrett is my favorite of all work-out DVD instructors. When I am tired and getting lazy, her DVD is the one I'd pop in the player and she gets me back on track.

The only thing missing from this workout is more yoga. There's a very short section at the beginning with some yoga poses (warrior and triangle), and that's the extent of it before the workout moves to pilates inspired mat work. The mat work really tones glutes and abs, and strengthens core muscles. This is my "day off" workout because it is relaxing, stretches muscles, and helps relieve stress.

I have been doing this video for over a month now. At first my muscles would really ache the next day, but I have begun to shape up well. I do this everyday, my calves, arms and upper legs have shown great improvement. Even when I am not feeling like doing anything I make myself do this video and I feel so much better after words. I just ordered the burn and firm pilates because I think Ellen is so great.

    The description of the DVD lead me to think there were more work out segments than there really are. For your core there are three segments, each harder than the next. The beginning level is nice because Denise really explains how to do the moves correctly which is helpful when the moves get harder. The thighs and buns segments are great, I felt it the next day. The first time I worked out to the DVD I thought some of her moves weren't that challenging but then my husband pointed out I was doing them incorrectly. When I did them the right way they were much harder. I really like that you can choose to listen to her explanation or just the music. After listening to her once or twice you'll probably get tired of her voice. She is encouraging though. All in all I like this DVD because it's not too easy that I get bored and it's not too hard that I get discouraged. I really like the 10 minute segments I can choose from and make my own workout program.

    Have to say - this is a good DVD. It is my second DVD that I have purchased on Pilates and this is by far a better work out thean the other one I have. The exercises are clear and quick moving. You can really feel the 'burn'! There is a good selection of different exercises and I have to say that, most importantly of all, I feel it is working. Denise Austin herself can be a touch painful to listen to over and over again but there are options where you can mute her! So, presumably she realises that she sounds painful herself! Overall, I would really recommend this DVD to anyone wishing to pursue Pilates at home on their own schedule. I wouldn't say that this is a DVD for absolute beginners since some of the exercises are quite tough and since it is fast moving it may be hard to really get the benefit if you are the whole time trying to work out which leg goes where.

    Denise Autin is my favorite exercise instuctor and her videos are easy to follow and very helpful. "Hit The Spot" covered everything that most of us women have problems with. I recommend this highly.

    These are seven 10-minute workouts that target "trouble areas"- waist, abs, thighs, hips, etc. You can do them all or you can select as many as you'd like. Each workout includes many movements taken directly from the traditional Pilates exercises, as well as some yoga movements and others that are a combination of both, or where you target different muscles at the same time. While the workouts are short and varied, and provide a welcome twist to the routine that can set in on regular Pilates mat exercisers, I got annoyed by Denise's overly protective, motherly style which distracted me from fully focusing on each exercise.

    The workout includes 3 different sets which target the abdominal area, waist and laterals. Surprisingly no hundreds. (Hello, isn't that the most important Pilates exercise?). She includes the 'stomach series', boat pose, lots of T stands and variations of it, one legged downward dog pushing to one legged plank, side stretches, lots of side twists as well.

    There are then 3 segments of 10 minutes each, targeting the hips, buns and thighs respectively. She covers practically every exercise included in the side leg mat series (if you are familiar with Pilates), T stands again, lots of inner and outer thigh work, as well as a standing Pilates series and lunges. A nice burner overall.

    My complaints about this video:

    1. While Denise sure knows her stuff and displays good form, she did make me wonder, is this a Pilates video or did I just pay to hear Denise's nonstop blabbing while she does Pilates at breakneck speed? I don't need to be reminded that "this exercise works the waist". I think I can get an idea of which area these exercises target once I do them, or at least she doesn't need to mention it 10 times. Or she often tells you how this exercise is her favorite (they all are!), or "how challenging this exercise is!". Is she trying to motivate you? I don't know. It takes away your attention from the exercise.

    2. The workout is too fast with very few repetitions of each exercise. Yes, intermediate Pilates is faster, however, she could have added few exercises with more precision. She repeats some exercises in a couple of segments, which she could have avoided by adding more repetitions to each exercise.

    To summarize:
    If you are a beginner in Pilates:
    There are other quality videos you could try before venturing to this one. I would recommend getting a Stott Pilates video before progressing to this one, which offer superb instruction. Denise makes occasional remarks about form but she moves too quickly from one exercise to the next so you may be better off with a Stott Pilates beginner's video or one of the Gaiam beginner's ones, that way you can learn proper form and breathing and then progress to this one.

    If you have some Pilates experience:
    Again, this will be a fun twist to your mat routine. You could add one lb ankle weights to the hip and thigh sections to add challenge. I do need to mention that there is music only option. You can listen to Denise the first time to get familiar with the routine and then try it with music only.
    There are other great DVDs that present short sequences (10 to 15 min each) and with much more pleasant instructors. Check out 10 minute solution Rapid Results Pilates with Lara Hudson or The Method Target Specifics Plus. Both are greatly recommended. Karen Voight "Total Body Pilates" is an excellent routine as well.

    I am new to Denise Austin. This is the first video of hers I own, so I was initially put-off by her voice, but I got used to it quickly. (Plus, you can mute her voice, and keep the music if you choose.)

    I am also new to pilates except for another, much slower-paced Kathy Smith video (which has great pointers). So this is exactly what I wanted--a long workout (up to 60 minutes) that I can customize with a new set of exercises.

    Now I know that I have yet another video in my arsenal that will actually work my core continuously, while also targeting my legs. It's something I'll come back to again and again since I am definitely already seeing the results, not just in muscle, but in posture, too.

    Great for newbies as far as cardio goes.
    The cardio is fun on this workout as long as you don't watch Denise. The cardio is great for a change of pace and for light days. Adding in some jumping jacks between chapters and during the "walk it out" times definately helps to get your heart rate up. The sculpting leaves some to be desired but has potential. I have gotten much better results by doing that twice, and reversing the sides for the second time, so I can get an even workout on both sides. She isn't very informative on form on this segment or on any in this one. I have liked the fact that she puts stretch segments in her workouts, I just wish in this one that she would actually give time to do all the streches, not just a couple of them. I just ignore the repition and hit the pause to hold in most cases. She does give some different ways to stretch out which is nice. Her older workouts are better.

    I don't know what the problem is with these dance snobs on here who claim this isn't "real" dancing. So what? Denise doesn't claim to be a professional dancer doing professional moves...these are fun routines for those of us who like to feel like we're having fun rather than doing tedious exercising. So if you want "real" dancing, don't complain about this video; simply don't use it!

    This video has a 5-minute warm-up, 10 minutes of a Broadway-style jazz workout, 10 minutes of a Latin workout, 10 minutes of a club/techno workout, 15 minutes of a ballet sculpt, and a 5-minute cool down. The only problem I have with this DVD is the ballet section; it's a bit tricky and I don't recommend turning to the side; it can hurt your knees badly. Other than that, it's a good workout.

    I like how many different types of dances there are. It's good exercise for beginners. It is fun to do all the workouts, but if you want to do just one type of dance they are individual so you can do each one separately.

    This is a great workout. I have been a slacker for awhile about my fitness and exercise in my daily life. I figured that my drama practices were enough exercise for me. Come to find out that I really needed more. I have always loved to dance and sort of why I love the drama team so much. However, I sort of just eat what I want when I want and gained several un-wanted pounds that need to go. This is a great workout for anyone. It is pretty easy once you have attempted the steps several times. It does take a little while to actually follow along with Denise and the others but you eventually get it. It works every area of your body and the BODY SCULPT (Ballet) part is not like taking ballet but it is very beneficial to all of us. Now that one is probably the hardest of the 4 for me but I will evetually get it. I have just ordered her Boot Camp DVD to help me also, especially when it is raining. It says that she has kickboxing and other physical things in it to help with strength training and I feel like that one will help me with my drama practices also. We have many physical dramas to where we are standing one moment and in the floor next and then back up and then down again and then push-ups and then kicks and so forth. They are very good exercise as well. However, with the un-wanted wait that I have gained it was very difficult for me to raise my legs and clap under them (for the dramas) and since I have added more exercise (walking, Dance Mix) into my daily life and of course 128 oz. of water and no other forms of drink except a glass of milk I have made much progress. I have began to loose my weight and I can now raise my leg and clap for the dramas. This is great for me. I would recommend you to try this DVD if you really enjoy dancing. It is fun and a great workout!

    This 1993 video is a one-hour workout combining stop-and-start cardio movements that are athletic (no dance) with muscle endurance moves with and without light weights. The cardio section uses moves like jogging, jumping, leg swings, and power moves such as fast lunge combinations, squats with jumps, and karate kicks. The lower body strengthening moves include variations of lunges and squats using body weight. The upper-body weight exercises are varied but done too quickly--it's easy to rely on momentum. Some of these exercises are oddly chosen: a number of the exercises that are supposed to work the chest fatigue the shoulders and back long before the chest muscles feel anything, for example. You'll certainly feel the many sets of ab exercises, however!

    After the fitness experts panned Cindy Crawford's 1992 Shape Your Body because of its risky moves, this one was planned under the supervision of C. Thomas Vangsness Jr., M.D., Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of Southern California. Crawford doesn't fling her body as she did in the first one (why didn't her trainer teach her not to do this in the first place?), and she explains how to do the exercises properly. A glossary of exercises at the end emphasizes correct form. This is certainly better than Shape Your Body, but unless you're wild about Cindy Crawford, you can find workouts conducted by real fitness instructors that are better designed and demonstrated. --Joan Price

    this is my mom's tape that she had when i was little, now i use it and i love it. this isn't some kind of tape where they tried to put a beautiful, hot famous person and a bunch of dumb workouts and try to sell it. this is real stuff. it is very tough! you will get toned. cindy is inspirational to look at while you do this. and you can tell she is in as much pain as you. it is fun and easy going. this is a classic because this will never go out of style and it's 2007 and it still feels up to date!

    I LOVE this workout. I had it on VHS in High School and have just started doing it again after having 3 children. It's a fantastic interval type cardio/strength training workout. You really feel the results and all the right muscles are worked to get you ready for a summer of less clothing :) I am in good physical condition and workout to various intense DVDs combined with running and this still is challenging for me to finish. So glad I got it again. Love, love, love it!

    This workout is really enjoyable so much so that I am doing this routine two to three times a week. My personal favorites are Pilates for Abs, Pilates for Buns and Thighs and Sculpting Pilates. It's really great for all-over toning. She (Lana) has much more flexibility than me so I just sit back and admire her during a few of the segments that I'm not able to do!!

    I've never done pilates before and after hearing about the 10 Minute Solution DVD I just had to try it. I received it two days after ordering it and was very excited to start doing pilates on a regular basis. After the first time of using it, I felt great and was very sore the next day. I've done it about five times since then and everytime I'm done I feel wonderful. I still get sore the next day but just like they say, no pain, no gain. I've tried workout videos before but I got bored with them but with this video I can't say enough about it. It's fun and I look forward to doing it every other day. My body craves the work out and I'm already starting to see results in my waistline and posture. It's a great DVD and I recommend it to anyone who wants to be able to customize their workout from home.

    This is the worst DVD I've ever got, it is nothing but a waste of money. It is very easy for beginners, but if you are a beginner, why don't you get "bellydance basics and beyond" or "bellydance for romance" or anything for Neon.     In reference to the "Basic Moves" portion...
    This is a half hour dance *instruction* video. Some moves may tire out your shoulders and hips, but it isn't much of a "workout," and definitely not cardio or strenuous.

    ~10min of head/neck & shoulder/arm movements .
    ~10min of rib/hip movements. ~5min of basic steps.
    ~5min of floor moves (Cleopatra/outer thigh lift, cat, leg stretch)

    They introduce individual isolated moves, and repeat them several times for users to practice; most moves were easy to pick up (but will take time & practice to make it look graceful). I don't know if it's the instructors or if it's because they are demonstrated isolated motions, but they look a bit robotic/jerky. This seems is an Intro to belly dance for total beginners.

    I think people with previous belly dance experience will find this basic video too slow/boring and stiff.

    I would much rather RECOMMEND "BELLYDANCE BASICS AND BEYOND: Technique for a Solid Foundation" BY JENNA, which is a 2.5hr DVD with much better technique and practice options; it provides a teaching portion of all the major belly dance moves, as well as a drill/practice section.

    Thanks to other reviews, I bought this DVD. Perfect choice for beginners! I also started a belly dancing class and this is MUCH easier to follow. I love how it teaches the basic moves and then moves you into a work out. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking of trying this type of workout. Its fun, sexy and although you get some good burning going, easy to do!

    I'm returning to a fitness lifestyle, so I'm considering myself a beginner--and this DVD is great for beginners. You have the option of creating your own personalized 10- to 50- minute workout, which I find very helpful. I work two of the target areas and the power stretch every other day, and I work the other two target areas on the odd days.

    I especially enjoyed the arms segment, although I feel it's a little short, so I often do it twice.

    I found the glutes section to be very challenging! It's really great in conjunction with the ab workout.

    The instructor is very perky (to the point of Barbie doll perky), which not everyone will enjoy, but I thought she was very upbeat and encouraging.

    This DVD is something you can jump right into and work up to, or something you can use to warm up with as you advance your fitness level. I truly enjoy using this one!

    On the plus side, there's a minimum of equipment. In fact, you only need hand weights for the Arms segment, and the workouts are indeed mostly beginner. (Some true beginners may have difficulty with some moves, such as modified push-ups.) It's also a bit slow and repetitive, but if you've never worked out before, you may appreciate that. It's also not overly perky or chatty, so it doesn't get annoying.

    That said, what bothered me was the time breakdown devoted to the workouts. If you divided the entire DVD into upper and lower body workouts, it'd come out to:

    Thighs and butt: 20 minutes
    Chest, arms, and back: 10 minutes
    Abs: 10 minutes
    Stretch: 10 minutes

    Given that women generally have less upper body strength than they do in their legs, a total of 10 minutes for all three of those muscle groups was a bit disappointing. Not a bad DVD for getting started those first 3 weeks or so, but once you've broken in your muscles, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for a more balanced workout - even for the time-crunched.

    I like having 10-minute sets of toning exercises to add on after my longer cardio workout. The exercises here are as challenging as you make them, but possible even for a beginner. The instructor, though, annoys the heck out of me! Too perky, seems almost condescending to me. After I learned thre basic routine, though, I was able to just turn down the sound and listen to something else while I worked.

    I enjoy using this exercise DVD. It fits in well with my lifestyle. I can work out for as little as 10 minutes or as much as 50 minutes. The streching workout is great for relaxing anytime. I've recommened this DVD and others in the series to coworkers.

    The workouts are do-able on the first try, and all of them give you a nice burn without overworking you. There are things you can do to adjust the difficulty level, but I really enjoy it. The 10-minute segments are a great way to work your whole body without sacrificing too much time that you don't or can't have. I really like the instructor, Cindy Whitmarsh. Yes, she has to encourage you, but i think she's just funny in a very normal-person-trying-to-be-encouraging kind of way, perhaps a little fake, but she has to be, she's a fitness teacher on a dvd. And have you ever seen Denise Austen?
    Anyway, it's a good workout, worth having, definately recommend it, easy to implement in your day. I especially like the abs and buns workout, but the legs are good too. I haven't gotten a chance to buy handweights, but i've done the arm exercises without them and they're really good. If you do all 4 segments with the power stretch at the end, it's a very good workout.

    Just kidding! But after doing this workout, I feel an inch taller. Most "core" workouts focus on strengthening the abdominal muscles and neglect the other core muscles - namely the back and butt. "Abdominals and Back" lives up to its name; after doing the workout for the first time last night I can really feel my lower back muscles (in a good way).

    Karen is a great instructor; she explains exactly how to do each move and is very encouraging. My other Pilates routines are 20 minutes, so I was a bit daunted by doing a 50 minute routine but the time flew by. And as another reviewer commented, Karen's figure and form are inspirational.

    I'm confident that this workout will strengthen my back for sports and weightlifting.

    I think that this video is absolutely great for those of us who wish to combine our regular exercise routine with a different element, such as Pilates. It definitely takes some getting used to, but once you get the hold of it, it is challenging and relaxing. The music is flowy and contemporary and Karen's directions are delivered with inesteemable accuracy. Plus, Karen's and her assistant's, Sarah, strength, flexibility and grace are worthy of emulation. As you may judge by my score, I highly recommend it.

    Are you looking for a workout to strengthen the "powerhouse" area of your body? That area from which all movements should begin. Karen has designed this beautifully and as you zero in on your abdominals, you also focus on strengthening your back.

    This is a 50-minute ALL-floor workout. You alternate between abdominal sculpting and simple back-strengthening and stretching moves to create a more balance and stable center. Karen combines the teachings of Joseph Pilates, yoga, and ballet with her own body-sculpting techniques.

    This will help you create a more stable center. You will find yourself sitting up taller and this particular video left me lying on the floor watching the second half because after you finish this workout, you know you have worked out.

    There is a small bonus section which shows how you can incorporate the Resist-a-Ring into your workout. I didn't find that part of the video that appealing as there was no music and you would have to remember how to do all the moves. It might be useful for those who are very experienced with the moves Karen has developed. I would have rather seen them incorporated into the video in a more organized fashion.

    For this workout you will only need a yoga mat and a towel. This helps to give you enough padding if you are working on a carpeted surface. Karen does sell a body reform mat if you are working out on a hard floor.

    If you love this workout, you will also enjoy Core Essentials and Total Body Training. They are all great fun and really motivate you with a great combination of creativity and enjoyable music.

    I feel completely relaxed after doing any of the Body Reform workouts. They have a wonderful balancing effect on my emotions and my mind seems to be free of distraction. As if the cares of the world just drift away with Karen's magical calming voice.

    You will just love some of these moves if you work on the computer all day. It is amazing how tight your shoulders and chest can become. This workout will open out your chest and stretch that tired back.

    Definitely Intermediate in some exercises, but mostly this is for anyone. There is one move, you might want to consider skipping. It is the one where you are raising your back off the floor and you then raise one leg up into the air. It is tricky, tricky. I would not recommend it for anyone who is not practicing yoga on a regular basis!

    This girl knows how to get you motivated. Just looking at her body makes me wish I had her motivation! She is just amazing. I can't wait for more Karen Videos. I want them ALL! And I am dying for her to make a really long and wonderfully relaxing stretch video. The one I have is good, but I would love to see her do a really creative outdoor video with tons of stretching. Something that would just help you drift away.

    If you enjoy this workout, look for The Method workouts. They have
    similar movements and are a bit more advanced and intense.

    Jennifer Kries is definitely the Pilates goddess of the workout world. Not only does she create challenging Pilates workouts, she gives perfect instruction and teaches you to respect your body in a new way. This is her New Method style workout. It is a combination of Pilates, Weight Training, Dance and Yoga.

    Workout 1 - Core Conditioning - Classic Pilates routine and Yoga moves. You will recognize all the basic Pilates moves with the roll-ups and modified roll-ups. Jennifer gives a lot of advice on modifying, but I just have to say that I have my own secret ways for getting from the flat-on-back position to the bending over one's legs position. I'm not sure she would approve. While Jennifer shows each position, she gives even more "breathing" instructions. I love "rolling like a ball" and the challenge of making each exercise so precise.

    Workout 2 - Metabolic Booster - Light weight training segment to increase cardiovascular strength. I love this almost "dance-style" workout. Jennifer is working out with four workout partners/instructors.

    The music is motivational, the colors are inspirational and the setting is so classic. You flow through the stretches like a dancer and then learn to get fancy with the weights. You are moving fairly fast so it is advisable to really learn the moves before increasing your speed. I found that once I was distracted by anything, I had to refocus, rewind and begin again.

    This is the most challenging weight workout I've ever done. Not only does this push you to the limit of your coordination, you are also moving in a very creative way. I love this section because it will be one I will be perfecting for months. Your arms will feel toned and the addition of the weights also helps you burn extra calories during the cardiovascular moments.

    Workout 3 - AM/PM Rejuvenation - Yoga-based workout to release tension and promotes flexibility. You will recognize all the basic yoga moves and there are a few variations with an added dose of creative appeal.

    Breath of Fire is an exercise I've recently seen in many yoga workouts. Jennifer almost seems to relax into this workout, although she is still just as precise. Her personality comes across especially well in the newer videos. She not only talks the viewer through the exercises, she is very comfortable with the entire process.

    I like the way you can actually hear Jennifer breathing in various exercises, it reminds you to breathe! She teaches some breathing techniques I've been seeing in a number of yoga workouts. It only took me about three videos to get that breathing technique under control. Ironically, the secret is to let go of control.

    This workout is the most challenging Jennifer Kries workout I've ever completed. If you do all three workouts one after the other, there is no need to do any cardiovascular work before starting this routine. Normally, I'd suggest walking for about 30-40 minutes, but with this workout, you don't need any additional exercise. You will strengthen and tone your entire body in 60 minutes. "Perfect Mix" has all the elements of a full-body workout and stretch.

    I noticed immediate results in how toned my body felt and also in my posture. Jennifer has the perfect body and now we know why. It takes intense determination and when you do this workout over a short period of time, you will almost become addicted to the demanding aspects.

    The workout you need to move into an entirely new realm of fitness. If you have working out for a few years and want to test your strength, "Perfect Mix" will invigorate and energize you. I highly recommend this workout.

    This is my favorite tape and I go back to it again and again. The three separate workouts allow you to divvie them up to different days, if desired. Each section is about twenty minutes: pilates mat workout that strengthens the core and targets the abs; an aerobic workout done with light weights for resistance and building muscle; and a relaxation stretch. Jennifer Kries is a terrific instructor. She explains while doing, so your not standing around killing time between exercises, and she talks just enough, not too much, and in a pleasant, non-condescending or patronizing way, and without ridiculous over-enthusiasm. In other words: perfect.
