Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja.

Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition. One veteran finisher describes it this way: "It's like having all 10,000 close calls of your life in one day. It makes regular life feel like slow-motion." --Ted Fry

If you call yourself a fan of off-road racing, then this is a film that you need to have at the top of your DVD collection. With some of the most awsome footage that I personally have ever seen and an awsome narration by the director, the story of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 takes on a whole new light. This is a must see.

This is one of the best off road movies I have ever seen. This movie definately gets the insight of the Baja 1000 and tells the story through the riders and drivers point of view, along with other point of views. This is my favorite movie, by far.

Rodri and Rico are two cousins unalike in every way except for a shared contempt for their parents' values and a deep connection to their free spirited grandfather, Rodrigo. When Rodrigo dies unexpectedly, his yuppie children are more interested in quibbling about their inheritance than in fulfilling his last request. Determined to make things right, Rodri and Roco kidnap their grandfather's ashes and set off for sunny Acapulco in a vintage Mercedes. On the way, they learn about life and friendship and realize that their grandfather was more free-spirited than they could have imagined.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent movie from Mexico..........2007-04-20

I am continually impressed by movies from Mexico. These movies are spun around very simple close-to-life stories, but superlative acting, cinematography, background score and direction makes them extremely interesting, intriguing, thought-provoking and entertaining.
The story starts with Grandpa Rodrigo's birthday and a reluctant gathering of family members. His daughter, two sons and two diagonally opposite cousins (Roco & Rodrigo). The tense & volatile atmosphere at the dinner table quickly erupts into a heated dialog (over Grandpa Rodrigo's son's marriage to a young & demure girl). Predictably, Grandpa Rodrigo has a massive heart-attack and he passes away. Without much delay, his will is read and the inheritance distributed. Amidst all the materialistic distribution, nobody seems to pay much attention to Grandpa's wish of his ashes being submerged at sea in Acapulco. For days, his ashes lay in a golden urn.
Flustered by everyone's nonchalant behavior, Roco grabs the urn and starts heading towards Acapulco in a vintage Mercedes. The vintage, however, is an inheritance gift to Rodrigo Jr. (his cousin). In an effort to save his inheritance, Rodrigo joins Roco in a sudden trip to Acapulco. Their personal differences come into play and despite much elbowing and snapping at each other, they make it to Acapulco. However, their mutual respect for Grandpa Rodrigo brings the cousins closer to one another. They continue to snap at each other, but (now) with an affectionate and brotherly air. Roco meets Maria (the very beautiful -- Ana de la Reguera) and without much delay, falls for her. The cousins spend a couple of days in Acapulco contemplating the strategy for submerging the ashes, clubbing, and growing up. However, on the planned submersion day, they realize that Maria is the daughter of Grandpa Rodrigo (watch the movie to see all the events). Maria is now Roco's aunt.
Finally, after a series of emotional incidents they manage to submerge the ashes. The subtle message is that life sometimes takes sharp turns, throws stuff at you and you have to grow up fast. However, we the humans, the recipients of the eternally free spirit must continue to love people around us (dead or alive) and ourselves. This is true freedom!

5 out of 5 stars Really great fun!.......2007-03-27

I picked this up in VHS at a video store for 99 cents, figured it would be an okay piece of entertainment. Boy, was I surprised! This is an excellent bit of comedy, beautifully acted, wonderfully edited, totally enjoyable entertainment! The dysfunctional family dynamics are hysterical, the young people are attractive and funny, the plot twists are very unexpected, and it's simply beautifully done. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and light hearted........2007-01-01

This movie made me homesick. Although not from Mexico, it reminded me alot of the times I lived there and some of the people I met. The spinning of the urn like a roulette wheel gave me a real chuckle. Also gives a view into the folks that live in Mexico City and it was nice to see Acapulco from the beach level. A good companion to Todo el Poder and El Segundo Aire.

4 out of 5 stars A nice film from director Juan Carlos de Llaca.......2006-07-18

"Por la libre" deserves a viewing because of all the elements that the director, Mr. LLaca brought together to this film. Even though it's a pretty light movie, you can take in consideration many good stuff about this one. First, the story is quite original. Second, the characters are indifferent from each other. Third, the acting is great by a very believable Osvaldo Benavides, and a surprising hit acting by Rodrigo Cachero, and of course, Ana de la Reguera, as a Hotel owner's daughter, whom also did a nice job in her role.

`Por la libre' is a free spirit comedy about family relationships and at some point, how the youth is and behaves in Mexico, the film deals with what happens in a lot of families after a strong older member of it, in this case, the grandfather, dies suddenly. The problems lie on carrying out the wishes of the patriarch is made clear right after the will is read. There is a bank account the old man has left to a friend who leaves in Acapulco. His wish is to be cremated and have the ashes scattered in the waters of that scenic city by the Pacific, where he would have gone to reside, had he lived long enough. Mr. LLaca is to be congratulated for getting good performances out of the three principals.

If you're looking for some other good Mexican films, try `Amores Perros' or `Y tu mama tambien,' these two films are very strong, profound, and full of meanings.

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of my road trip to acapulco!.......2005-05-30

Although I don't consider this a 5 star movie and I could name several mexican films off hand that have better plots and actors; this movie is pretty fun and memorable enough to want to watch it every now and then. Two cousins that don't really get along take a road trip to acapulco to try to get their recently passed away grandfather's ashes into the ocean. They run into romance, trouble, and the movie gives a laughable surprise towards the end. Good movie,,not Oscar material but definitely a movie worthy of your dvd library and one that you will probably want to watch once in a blue moon.

When I first read Joe's story I laughed out loud and cried a little too, since I saw myself as a similar type collector. No I never was as lucky as he,and I have never had the opportunity to meet him,but his enthusiasm and wiliness in the pursuit of his dream makes a budding collector want to hit the road immediately and start the search. While of course the video brings a better perspective to his being, and the accompanying musical cuts the reward...all of us in the collecting field are a little odd, some even borderline psychotic, and I think we all feel better about ourselves after seeing Joe get his just desserts which he so earnestly pursued and deserved.

More of a frontier Western with futuristic trappings than a science fiction film, you can see why this made-for-cable morality play from the pen of the late Rod Serling remained unproduced for 40 years. Infused with the strong character writing and inventive details that enlivened his best Twilight Zone scripts, it nonetheless suffers from Serling's key weakness--playing his allegories so close to the surface that it overpowers the story. Earth in the future becomes so polluted that the human race has left save for two communities: the "dwellers," a ragtag group of off-worlders who mine the planet for its only resource (scrap metal), and the "drivers," a tribe of Native Americans living on the outskirts of the dwellers' rusting city, Carbon. As Carbon's ambitious entrepreneur Ron Perlman (playing the populist leader to the hilt) makes his bid for power by appealing to the mob instincts of his racist township, principled but weak-willed sheriff Stephen Lang faces his fears and the secret that keeps him trapped in inertia. Director Rob Nilsson shoots this drama of racism and mob violence in the murky colors of junkyard, giving the town an appropriately overwhelming ambiance of rust and dust. More importantly, he grounds the film in the personalities of its cast. The film creaks under the overwrought symbolism of Indians and settlers to explore the politics of hate, but the dramatic clash between Perlman and Lang resonates with their excellent performances. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting telling of an old story.......2004-12-24

Two hundred years in the future, in a radioactive scrap metal mining town on the almost completely abandoned, draught ridden, dying planet Earth, a young man of a "second class race" is lynched for the supposed beating and attempted rape of the wife of the town boss before he can be taken off planet to the new home of humanity for trial. The act exhumes an old guilt that begins the final disintegration of a town already half buried in the ugly dust of racism and prejudice.

Steven Lang does an excellent job as the useless, haunted town drunk and Sheriff Harvey Denton. The "Cain and Abel-ish" brother like relationship between his character and Ron Perlman's (superbly done) town boss and mob ring leader Jerry Paul is well done by both actors. You can see it there dying, being killed by time, guilt, booze and power. The abusive love-hate relationship between Jerry Paul and his wife Maya (Barbara Jane Reams) is very realistic, scary in its unhealthy depths of possession and desire to care and be cared for.

The DVD unfortunately does not have the making of documentary.

3 out of 5 stars Rod Serling, Twice Removed.......2000-12-02

While this initially comes off as a "Twilight Zone"-style morality play, shifting a thinly-disguised Western setting into a science fiction setting, it should be pointed out that this film is quite far removed from Rod Serling's original. In fact, the Amazon reviewer's statement that Serling's script was "unproduced" is not strictly true.

"A Town Has Turned To Dust" was a television play written in the 1950s, the heyday of live television drama (I can't recall if this was a Playhouse 90 offering). Serling's original script focused on a real-life case involving the lynching of an African-American man, with the complicity of local law enforcement officials. The network feared that this was too inflamatory and controversial to be produced in Serling's original form, so it was rewritten extensively. The version that *was* produced and aired in the 1950s changed the setting to New Mexico in the late 1800s, and changed the victim's character from African-American to Mexican immigrant. Rod Steiger played the local sheriff.

Rod Serling was extremely upset about these alterations, and felt that they had gutted his story, putting too much distance between audience and subject. The "old West" setting, in his opinion, dulled the impact and relevance that his play was intended to have. The play, as written, was not "allegory" at all -- it was a somewhat fictionalized retelling of recent (or current) events, whose impact came from its *contemporary* relevance.

I can't help wondering what Serling would have thought of this recent version, which now has two thick layers of reworking. It is no longer a "1950s lynching placed in a Western setting", it is now a "1950s lynching placed in a Western setting and moved to a Science Fiction setting." The setting -- and the relevance -- of Serling's original have been distanced even further from his original intention. In drawing the play further and further from its intended context, Serling's voice is increasingly muted.

5 out of 5 stars The world's problems never change........1999-07-25

A Sci-Fi type of movie is not what I usually like but this is a great movie. Written by the late Rod Serling it shows a time in the future where the problems are the same as we have now and have had in the past. A lot of what this movie is about is prejudice and hate. Ron Perlman and Frankie Avina are the shinning stars in this movie. I highly recommend this movie.

    1 out of 5 stars POOR WILLIE!.......2005-07-30

I really can't believe Willie Nelson would put his name on this movie much less his face on the cover! He is my all- time hero and I just can't believe this crap-ass movie. First of all, Willie is in it for ONE scene! Second, this seems it was done on a home movie recorder! This was terrible and a waste of my 12 dollars! Don't get burned and buy this movie. Willie is still the man though!
