Boxing movies have had a set of conventions that started in the 1930s and ran all the way up through the Rocky series and beyond. There's the hard-luck underdog contender, the talented boxer who's manipulated by crooked promoters and managers, the outside-the-ring love affair, the score to settle for a fellow boxer, the family tensions over the boxer's career and the climactic match against the big mean champion. Knockout manages to bring all of those ingredients to the table and mix them together. Maria Conchita Alonso plays the lovely and talented Belle, a young boxer with a future. Her dad is an ex-prizefighter himself, pursuing a career in law enforcement; his partner is Belle's love interest. Belle's mother died of a brain tumor some 15 years previous. When her friend, homegirl, and sparring partner is put in the hospital by the champion, Belle trains with a vengeance to take the title away and even the score for her friend's sake. This is a movie that tries very hard but is so riddled with the hoariest boxing cliches and trite dialogue that it can never rise above being heavy-handed and predictable. It's too bad, because the direction is competent and the performances are strong, but the by-the-numbers storyline breaks no new ground whatsoever. Granted, it's hard to rewrite the rules of the boxing movie, but Knockout's brand of prizefight melodrama veers from the formula only by featuring a Latino setting and female fighters. On the plus side, the fight scenes are well-choreographed and tough, but they have the weight of the rest of the movie working against them. Knockout isn't bad, but for even the most casual fan of boxing movies, you've seen it before. --Jerry Renshaw

5 out of 5 stars Short, sweet, effective & fun!!.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed this workout very much. It's a nice pace excellent for someone who loves boxing and needs a good workout as well as someone looking to learn some basic boxing moves.

The workout is about 30 minutes and includes both upper and lower body exercises followed by a core floorwork drill. You will be ready to end when your 30 minutes are up but you'll also be energized and ready for the next session. They recommend 2-3 days per week.

They have a short nutritional advice segment with Laila and a motivational segment with Sugar Ray. I think that added a more personal touch to this dvd. If you are skeptical about paying $15+ for this workout remember it can be rented from Netflix and the likes to try out.

Micheal Olajide, Jr. also offers boxing workouts that are of benefit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Cardio DVD.......2007-03-30

I'm not a DVD workout person, but I have to say that this one is easy to follow, and raises your heart rate to an intense level. It allows you to build up to a very strenuous workout. The label on the back of the DVD case is misleading however, it says that the Kickboxing Workout is approx. 120 minutes, when in reality it is only 50 minutes. I'm not sure if this was a misprint. The other two workouts are labeled properly.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2007-03-27

Really hard but enjoyable workout. This is the first Kathy Smith DVD I've ever bought as they're not widely sold in the UK, but she's a briliant instructor and this particular DVD is very highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2007-03-23

I was not happy with this DVD. I purchased this DVD because on the back it said the 2nd kickboxing workout was approximatly 120 minutes..in reality, it is only 40 minutes. I was looking for a longer workout and was not happy spending my money...felt a bit cheated.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-01-26

This was well worth it. Three well-planned workouts that are intense but simple enough to do. They lead you through the moves so that anyone can do it. And the variety keeps you from getting bored.

5 out of 5 stars Two previously released workouts together for one great deal!.......2006-11-08

This DVD is a compilation of two previous Kathy Smith releases, Kickboxing Workout and Aerobox, and buying them together is a great deal! The Kickboxing workout is appropriate for beginners but will challenge intermediates as well, and the Aerobox workout will leave intermediate to advanced exercisers sweating. I have broken down the two programs in detail below.

The Kickboxing Workout was my first-ever experience with kickboxing, and I've loved it ever since. The program begins with Ketih Cooke, a well-known kickboxer, providing simple explanations of each of the punches and kicks that will be used in the workout. Kathy then takes over, leading you through a 10-minute warm-up. Next comes the 25-minute kickboxing work. During this section, you will practice punches and kicks, starting slowly and then building up to a faster pace. Kathy gradually works up to basic punch-kick combinations which are simple to learn yet to fun to do. At the end of this section, two short combinations are presented by Keith Cooke and another well-known instructor, Keli Roberts. Following the main workout, there is a 5-minute segment of kicking drills, a nice stretch using a chair, and finally a 5-minute bonus abs/back segment (not sure why the stretch came before this).

Aerobox is a tough boxing working combined with jump rope drills to up the intensity even further. Although Kathy is present in a leading role, the main instructor is actually Michael Olajide, a boxer. Prior to the start of the workout, Kathy and Micheal review the moves which will be used during the routine and discuss proper form. The workout begins with a warmup lasting just over 7 minutes. In this section, you will perform simple punches combined with side steps and plenty of twists to begin raising the heart rate; the warmup ends with some basic upper and lower body stretches. The next section, standing boxing, is the longest segment at 11 minutes. Here you will concentrate more intensly on the punches, and Michael introduces some double-time moves. Following this comes "Stick and Move 1," a 4-minute segment which adds some simple footwork--mostly via boxer's shuffles--to the boxing movements. Next comes the first jumprope segment (4 minutes)--it's very challenging even without the rope! A second "Stick and Move" section follows, this one only 2 minutes but with some quicker footwork. The next jumprope segment lasts 5 minutes, with the moves becoming a bit more complex. The final "Stick and Move" section is also only 2 minutes and again involves quick footwork; the final 4-minute jumprope segment ups the intensity and impact even further by adding some jogging and knee raises. During the "Aerobic Cool-Down," you are still doing punches and some footwork, but at a much slower pace. The 4-minute stretch segment brings the total workout time to 50 minutes.

Again, this DVD is really a great deal--as always, you get excellent instruction by Kathy Smith, fine guest performances by Michael, Keli, and Keith, and two all-around great workouts. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars BODOM RULEZ.......2007-05-18

I have loved CoB for years, and this was a great surprise. Roope is an underrated guitarist, and although the main focus is on Alexi Laiho, you cannot mistake Roope's abilities throughout the show. They are a wonderfully put toghether band, and their chemistry is amazing onstage, they are smiling and just having a good time.

I watch this every day, almost! The documentaries are insanely funny. I would give this 10 stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars I been waiting for this a long time ago.......2007-05-09

Children of bodom is one of my favorite bands since I was a kid not that I'm old but about the same age and this is a great performance althoug I thought that there would we more old songs the show is outrageus

5 out of 5 stars The Bodom experience.......2007-04-19

This is an awesome DVD. It fully captures the energy of being at a Children of Bodom show, which is impressive in and of itself. It's a long set representing all of their albums, and I was happy to see that everyone in the band gets equal camera time. (I had been sort of afraid it would be the Alexi and Janne-only show.) There's also a really fun documentary, deleted scenes, and a handful of music videos - dude, for the price, you can't beat this. This DVD is STUFFED. If you're a diehard, buy this. It won't disappoint you.

3 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING WORKS EXCEPT THE MIX.......2007-03-24

A great performance considering the band is drunk as a muthaf@#ker. The band is spot on perfect. Good editing and great camera work with lots of fretboard close-ups. Great lighting and stage design with lots of flashpots. The whole band performs with amazing energy.

IMHO, the only thing that kills this show is the muddy mix. Too many highs with almost no mids or bottom end. The bass drums during Jaska's drum solo sound like someone tapping out rhythms on a coffee table with their hands. COB's studio albums don't have a lot of bottom, but a LIVE Metal show should vibrate the walls. I could barely feel the vibration in my floor at an extremely high volume. These guys need a new man at the mixing board.

Maybe next time.

The concert was shot in widescreen with a 2.0 or 5.1 Surround mix.

If you're a serious audiophile you may be disappointed. I know I was.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for a COB Fan!.......2007-03-24

This is an amazing Children of Bodom DVD, Hardcore Fan or not. The video quality is amazing, Much better than what alot of live DVDs look like. The band also has a great live show. I think it's the little things that makes this DVD so great though, Check out the Children of Bodom biography, Very interesting and very hilarious. A great insight to the guys behind the band. It also has all the promotional videos they've ever recorded. I've never been a Drummer but the section with Jaska's solos just blew me away and the section with the duel/harmonizing between Alexi (Guitars) and Janne (Keyboards) has to be one of the most awesome things I have EVER seen on a live DVD, Or a band do ever for that matter. To make it short, If you love the Hate Crew, Or their Genre, Get this DVD! You won't regret it.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD!!!!!.......2006-10-28

I loved this DVD. Not only was it informative and educational, but I thought the moves were very practical and explained well. Joanne proves her knowledge by demonstrating all the kicks and punches with vigor and self-confidence. I was attacked several years ago and wish I would have been informed with how to protect myself. After watching this DVD, I know I am now equipped to deal with an attacker and have gained the confidence to defend myself in a dangerous situation. I would recommend this to all women.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD changed my life.......2006-10-26

I was attacked several years ago and did not have the tools to defend myself, either physically or mentally. In this unique DVD, Joanne Harris guides you through powerful combinations to defend yourself in the event of a violent attack. She carefully and with detail demonstrates various highly effective moves that not only provide a great physical workout but boost your self-confidence. After years of searching, I now have a fitness program that has strengthened my body and given me the confidence I needed that was so lacking in my life. I feel less helpless and more prepared, safe and secure. I highly recommend this instructional DVD to anyone who wants to get fit and learn an original and powerful self-defense form. It's amazing, You won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Good basic information, could use more.......2006-08-31

This dvd is done by a black belt Joanne Harris on a basic set with pink marble background, very soft, light cheap elecronic music & a guy demonstrating as an attacker in some parts.
There's an introduction how she did martial arts after being mugged & about size not being everything.
There's a demonstration of her responding to attacks w/the video stopping & her narrating what move she used in a combo that is just an overview. There are moves to show how to get out of holds, such as neck holds. She uses basic terminology to name them, such as using two hands as "batter up" or "knee to groin" she does use palm strikes & elbows which is great.
There is a basic warm-up straight from a 1980s feel with running in place & basic stretches for a good 10 min.
There is the five-star workout which she deonstrates each of the moves more in depth & lets you practice with her a few times for about 20 min.
There is the Links workout which is doing all the moves w/o stopping for explaination for a decent 20 min workout.
It's followed by about a 10 min basic crunch & other similar abdominal workout.
The cooldown is about 3 min.
The menu is pretty good, the lighting & sound is good, just everything is a bit monotonous.
Joanne is great though, she speak a good clip speed, not too fast & gets to the point, no dilly dallying, so you know she understands how long lectures can kill anything.
The only things I wish was more information & her way of demonstrating the moves seems a bit lazy, she doesn't remind you to really use muscle strength & intention when you practice with her. It more seems like relaxed aerobics. She does tell you to watch out for joint locking & to punch THROUGH your target, not at it.
All in all it's good for a short amount of info for those with little time & those who aren't looking for a serious workout or hard moves due to muscle or joint limitations.
For more serious info & more info, get "Fit to Defend" it's 2 disks & teaches karate & grappling jujitsu.

Also, with the hardcore scenes edited for general release this film loses some continuity.
Buyer beware: as a xxx feature it's better than average, as an r rated feature it leaves a lot to be desired.

3 out of 5 stars Not THAT bad!.......2003-06-01

OK-- just know what you're getting here. You're NOT buying this for the acting, script or other Oscar categories. You're buying this because it shows women beating each other up. Not so much boxing as landing 19-20 unblocked punches to the opponent's head or gut; each punch -judging by the sound effect-- would drop an elephant. Each boxer does a creditable job of grimacing, suffering and sweating. Way too much "plot" gets in the way here, but on DVD you can pass up the grease and go right for the meat.

2 out of 5 stars Good topic, bad movie.......2002-06-07

I was very disappointed by this movie. I had seen the great movie about female boxing called SHADOW BOXERS and I wanted more. This was not even in the same league.

1 out of 5 stars Someone please knock me out!.......2000-12-27

I rented Knockout thinking that it would be like Girlfight. Girlfight was an amazing movie, with amazing acting. Knockout is an insult to Girlfight by just having the same SUBJECT matter. It was the worst movie I've ever seen with bad acting and a predictable ending. It was a waste of money, and a waste of time. Whatever you do, DON'T SEE KNOCKOUT!

1 out of 5 stars This DVD was made in someone's Basement.......2005-06-28

At first this DVD seems to be legitimate but one soon realizes that the footage is taped off the TV. DVD Menu audio is much louder than the footage's audio and there is nothing else to the disk. No commentary, graphics, editing or anything other than the titles that were added. HBO graphics are not taken out and the footage is full of static. Great fights, bad bootlegged footage. Good buy for suckers.
