Description
A blood-and-thunder horror yarn from the pen of Edgar Wallace, The Door With Seven Locks stars Leslie Banks as a mass murderer with a penchant for puzzles. He lures several heirs to a fortune to their deaths in his mazelike mansion, which is festooned with cryptic clues leading to the location of a valuable treasure. Banks goes too far when he abducts the lovely Lilli Palmer, whose handsome boyfriend invades the mystery house, rescues the girl, and puts an end to Banks' perfidy. Door with Seven Locks was released in the US as Chamber of Horrors. It has frequently been mis-shipped to local TV stations instead of the 1966 horror film of the same name.

I love frolicking in morgues........2006-09-03
A young girl, Judy Landsdowne (Lilli Palmer) inherits a key that is supposed to help her claim her share of a fortune. Dr. Manetta (Leslie Banks) is intent on getting the fortune himself, but in order to do so he needs seven keys to unlock the chamber. Landsdowne is the last person on his list. She is abducted, but her handsome boyfriend, Dick Martin (Romilly Lunge) gets involved. He sneaks into the mansion, rescues his girl, and stops Manetta's evil scheme.
CHAMBER OF HORRORS is an average old-time suspense film. There's a mad doctor who collects torture instruments, a couple of sinister and obedient house servants, a sidekick, and the leading lady's best friend who is only interested in finding herself a man. There has been a crash in recent years to remake classic suspense and horror movies. CHAMBER OF HORRORS is one that is ripe for a remake.
Chamber of Boredom.......2001-09-07
A murder is found to be connected to a false heir and a secret underground torture chamber. In an old haunted house, Dr. Manetta plans to menace heiress Judy Lansdowne, who is well portrayed by lovely blonde Lilli Palmer in an early role. "Chamber of Horrors", an English B-Picture, is plagued by slow pacing, poor writing, and laughable acting. This low-budget British thriller is based on Edgar Wallace's book, "The Door with Seven Locks". The year before, "The Human Monster", based on another Wallace story, was a big box-office hit. It had starred Bela Lugosi. 1940's "Chamber of Horrors" is thought to be a remake of 1932's "The Most Dangerous Game". But it's not. The only real connection is that both starred the marvelous Leslie Banks. "The Most Dangerous Game", shot in Hollywood on the sets for "King Kong", was Banks first of 35 films. Leslie Banks appeared in 2 early Alfred Hitchcock movies, "Man Who Knew Too Much(1934)", and
"Jamaica Inn(1939), Hitch's last English film. The debonair actor was a British screen, stage actor, stage director, and producer. Banks owed his scarred face and frozen expression to a paralyzing injury suffered in World War I. He died in 1952. The Roan Group DVD, "Chamber of Horrors", features a cast and crew menu, and 19 chapter stops, with no other extras. For a magnificent performance by Leslie Banks in a classic thriller, find "The Most Dangerous Game" in DVD and VHS. Unless you're a fervent devotee of master thespian Leslie Banks, there is no point in entering this "Chamber" door.
Chamber of Horrors.......1999-03-11
Well this is a very hokey movie but well worth watching for all you lovers of the B movies. The copy I have (not from Amazon) is a bit dark so it was hard to view... It's a funny movie, kind of a spoof on detective movies with an old spooky mansion, a not so poor damsel going there to inherit money, and a very handsome and dashing if not silly detective who follows her there for protection. The damsel inherits a key to a fortune but there are seven that are needed to get into the family tomb and get the treasure. A large Mute, a cunning and evil looking Dr, and two other family servants try their best to keep the damsel from getting her inheritance. The title of the movie comes from the Dr... he has a love of torture devices and collects them in a small museum on the family manor. The comedy relief is provided by the side kick of the detective and the damsel's young aunt who is interested in nothing but finding a man. ;) A very screwy screwball comedy/suspense. Slow in spots but worth watching.

Not Even Twin Belas Can Save This One.......2005-01-06
This is a dull mystery centered around the inventor of a television system. Suddenly, the inventor is killed right as he is making a broadcast. Whodunit? Prime among the suspects is Bela Lugosi, who plays the inventor's assistant. But no, it's not Bela. We discover him to be just another red herring as he is killed later on in the film. However, all is not lost. Bela's twin brother (?), a federal inspector, shows up and in only five minutes, unmasks the killer. Why couldn't he have shown up thirty minutes before and saved us all this dull talk? Look for Hattie McDaniel in an early role as the stereotypical servant. This obscure feature (it scarcely played any dates when originally released back in 1935) is recommended only for die-hard mystery fans and hardcore Bela fans.
Why are people so shocked..........2004-11-24
to "discover" this isn't exactly a cinematic classic?? Just the title and the fact that Lugosi is in it pretty much tell that story (let's face it; after Dracula, Bela did nothing but B and C movies except for an occisional cameo). The one actor really wasted here is Hattie McDaniel. Be that as it may, the movie's amusing in its own Ed Woodish sort of way. Interesting more as a history capsule of sorts, due to the early reference to TV.
Shockingly lousy!.......2003-06-20
I suppose we're all being murdered by television to some degree but here the title is somewhat miseading. Its not really murder BY television (as in forcing someone to watch Jim Carey, for example) but murder ON television.
This minor quibble aside, MBT is incomprehensible, dull, has offensive racial stereotypes and acting not unlike Plan 9. So what's not to like? I knocked off one star as this isn't one of Bella's films that also stars the Bowery Boys...sigh...
Oh - to add to the hilarity the print has more scratches than a driver's ed movie with some bits spliced out altogether. In short, its great! Highly reccomended.
An exceedingly dull, disappointing whodunit.......2003-03-19
In the early days of cinema, it seems like every third movie involved a murder, after which the authorities would not allow anyone to leave the house before the mystery was solved. Murder By Television is a rather poor representative of that type of movie. I like my plots to make sense, and this movie kept me rather confused from the very start. Worse, the final solution to the crime seems to me as if it was just made up out of thin air. The murder victim in this case is a television pioneer whose plans for a technological breakthrough are in high demand. As he is broadcasting his message to the few people lucky enough to actually have a TV, he suddenly collapses. There are several suspects, as one or two of the guests seem to be doing something akin to spying for a rival television company or two. The inventor's assistant, played by Bela Lugosi, is another prime suspect. There's another guy who keeps snooping around outside and sneaking in the house, but for some reason I don't understand the cops just keep throwing the guy out the door without asking him any questions. The ultimate solution to the crime partly relies upon one of the oldest tricks in the book, a plot device that was surely old and tired as early as 1935. Bela Lugosi is about the only thing this movie has going for it, but his character is by no means interesting. Almost everyone just seemed to be going through the motions on this one, and the result is a flat, forgettable film. The one exception is Hattie McDaniel, whom I was surprised but delighted to find in this pre-Gone With the Wind motion picture. Of course, her character is just one big stereotype, which makes her performance much less enjoyable than it would be otherwise.
