Broadcast to record ratings on the TNT cable network, this Raiders-esque adventure does not go by the book, staring with its atypical action hero and his decidedly uncool profession. Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie from E.R.) is a thirtysomething perpetual student who still lives with his mother (Olympia Dukakis). When his exasperated professor finally ejects him into the real world, Carsen's Holmesian deductive acumen lands him a job as the librarian at the Metropolitan Library. This is not an ordinary library. It houses history's most mythic artifacts, including the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box, and the sword Excalibur. The fate of the world is in Carsen's hands ("That's so sad," he observes) when the dread Serpent Brotherhood steals the library's Spear of Destiny, and Carsen must retrieve it. His reluctant, and antagonistic, partner is Nicole (Sonya Walger), who is as skilled in martial arts as Carsen is schooled in the Dewey Decimal System. Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin add welcome comic relief, with Newhart, of all people, getting into the action by film's end. The humble hero (who would rather be known as "Flynn, the rather pleasant at parties"), somewhat cheesy special effects, and corny comedy make The Librarian a fun guilty pleasure. As Carsen proclaims, "Being a librarian is actually a cool job." This looks like the beginning of a beautiful franchise. --Donald Liebenson

Wyle (ER) heads a sterling cast in a fun, fantastical, special effects-laden adventure that soars around the world from the Metropolitan Library to the Amazon jungle to the Himalayas. Then the Serpent Brotherhood, seeking world domination, steals one of three parts of the magical Spear of Destiny from the library. Only Flynn, aided by a gorgeous bodyguard, has the knowhow to thwart their plan. But does he know how to be a hero? He will - even if he has to gouge, kick, punch, brave Mayan death traps and plunge off icy precipices every inch of the way!

great romance, great characters, great fun!.......2007-05-19
So, this movie wasn't Indiana Jones. So what? What is? They did they best they could with a limited budget. So it had factual errors? So did Indiana Jones, so did the Mummy, so did National Treasure and Sahara. Does that make them less enjoyable movies? Not to me. So, give this movie a chance before you bash it.
This movie was superbly cast, given the TV movie budget. Noah Wylie was the geeky and goofy, but kinda cute, intellectual Flynn Carson, who finds himself in his thirties, living with his mother, while having amassed 22 degrees (is that even possible?) and is no longer welcome in school. He's told to get a job (and a life) and is thrust into the real world. His well-meaning mother (Olympia Dukakis) is constantly trying to fix him up, in the mean time. So, here is Flynn, a genius with 22 degrees, and he doesn't have employers beating down his door with jobs? I took a star off for that being really inplausible.
Flynn finds an invitation to interview with the Metropolitan Libary. After waiting a whole day in line, he goes into an interview with cranky Jane Curtain, humorless director of library, although she was actually pretty funny. In a funny sequence, he deducts, with Sherlock Holmes logic, that she's recently divorced and had three different cats. Surprise, he meets a Judson, the senior librarian (Bob Newhart). They take him on a magical tour of the portion of the library that few people know about; it's stocked with antiquities that the rest of the world doesn't (or shouldn't) know about: the REAL Mona Lisa, the Holy Grail, unicorns, the golden goose, the arc of the covenant, pandora's box, among other things. The Librarians are keepers of these great treasures. And it's the Librarian's job to keep them secret from the public.
On Flynn's first official day, they discover that the library was broken into and a band of theives took only one thing: one-third of the Spear of Destiny, the spear that lanced Christ's side. To wield it gives the user great power. Hitler had a third. Napoleon had a third. So basically, humanity is SOL if the evil Serpend Brotherhood gets all three pieces. The only clues as to where the other three pieces are in in the Language of the Birds, which no living human being can translate- (of which, our hero does so in less than 6 hours). Thus, Flynn's on the job training begins.
Flynn finds himself on a flight to the Amazon while he steadily attempts to translate the language of the birds. Judson manages to come on Flynn's personal TV in coach, telling Flynn, "Trust No One." Unbeknownst to Flynn, the Serpent Brotherhood is on the plane, too! The horrors! A beautiful, but arrogant, Amazonian woman sits beside him, and eventually saves his hide (in a fantastic, yet unbelievable sort of way). When they escape to the jungle, she introduces herself as Nicole Noone (here's No One, get it!? Nyuck, Nyuck) and she has no interest in anything but keeping the Librarian alive. Thus, the adventure begins.
There was one romance scene, but really, most of it was just implied, not shown, so this movie is safe for the kiddies over the age of 8. There was great romantic tension between Flynn and Nicole. Wylie really flexed his comic muscle in this film (I never knew he had one). The best part, in my opinion, was when Bob Newhart got into a Ninja fight (you heard right!) with the Serpent Brotherhood (anybody else want a piece of me!?!). I laughed- Semper Fi! Overall this is a good movie if you need something funny and cute with good chemistry in it.
Librarian - Quest for the Speak.......2007-05-09
I enjoyed this movie. I like the adventure and excitement of the whole thing. It is just plain fun with some imagination! Hope they make a third.
Amusing.......2007-05-07
Noah Wyle exceeded expectations and Bob Newhart & Jane Curtain were fun to see in action. The premise of the film was interesting, and the special effects were just fine.
the Librarian Quest for the Spear.......2007-03-29
Excellent, more of the movie on the dvd than on tv...I love this adventure!
Not bad for a TV show.......2007-03-16
We actually watched Return to "King Solomon's Mines" first and enjoyed it, although the special effects were a bit cheesy. It was good family fare, so we bought "Quest for the Spear". We thought it was actually better than "Solomon's Mines" and the special effects were more believable in some instances. We call it "Indiana Jones Lite".

Test Your Might Mortal Kmobat........2007-04-24
Now of all the great action movies that was created in the 90's this one was the best action movie ever in the 90's or probaltly the best of all. because everytime you here the song mortal kombat man you be wanting to in there and fight. Im sorry but no fighting song beats that song. My favorite fight scene was when Johnny Cage fought Scorpion Get over here. Sonja Blade well she was alright but she kicked some but a liked kitana more. Or lets not forget about lord rayden the part were he electocuted Scorpian and Sub-Zero. And last but not least Liu Kang I also liked the liked the fight scene between him and Reptile and when he finaly beat the mesh out of Shang Tsung. And don't get me wrong but I also liked Street Fighters as well but I like Mortal Kombat much more. My only wish is that they didnt kill off Johnny Cage in part 2 that was what sunk the Franchise down and Jax was Corny please why did they have to have him in this movies?
unusual film for all the times.......2007-01-28
The movie become popular from the first moment and for fans, i think, it still stays the same.
This has to be one of the best martial arts films I've seen. It has amazing special effects and outstanding fight scenes, with a balance in between so you're not going straight from one fight to another.
The storyline works well and the soundtrack is great. There is a little bit of comedy one-liners, mostly courtesy of Liu Kang (Robin Shou) but for the most part, this is a serious film. The other thing that makes it good is that you don't need to have played the game to enjoy or understand the movie. My only criticism would be the lack of reality-at the end, Liu Kang has been beaten up, in two fights, received some hard blows and isn't even bruised.
heinous.......2006-11-07
This is the most terrible, emotionally offensive film ever created. After watching this movie, my eyes began to bulge from my head and limbs began to fall off. Watch this movie if you like the feeling of having your organs ruptured.
Still love it.......2006-08-31
When this movie came out, I was twelve years old and horribly afraid of being caught out as not old enough to see a PG-13 movie without an adult. In spite of that fear however, I saw this movie no less than seven times in the theatre alone. Now at almost 23 years old, I can say that this movie still makes me giddy with enjoyment. I love Liu Kang, Raiden and especially Reptile. Annihilation didn't come close to matching this movie. They couldn't keep the actors from the first film, Johnny Cage died in the first five seconds and the actor who had replaced Christopher Lambert as Raiden was terrible. But this movie, this movie captured my imagination over and over again and will likely continue to do so.
Great. A little better than annihilation.......2006-08-23
This movie is great, but I have to say that christopher lambert and the person that dubbed him sucked. I am going to put a list of characters from both movies, and next to the name, I'm going to put which movie had the best character, the 1st movie, or the 2nd movie(annihilation).
Liu Kang - same guy, but he is great in his part.
Kitana - same girl, shes pretty good
Sonya - tie, brigette wilson(first movie) was better at martial arts, and sandra hess(annihilation) is better at acting.
Jax - first movie, even though he's only at the beginning. Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure that he's on screen for less than 60 seconds.
Johnny Cage - he's pretty much the only choice because in annihilation johnny gets his neck twisted at the very beginning. He does'nt even say anything. But Sonya said,Johnny!! And she menchins Johnny throughout the movie because they were a couple.
Raiden - annihilation, because he sounds like raiden and he does'nt look like a freak.
If you don't have annihilation yet, than get the mortal kombat 2 pack of this movie and annhilation for only $26.99.

The Promise came to American shores with endless hype about its visual splendor--and for once, the hype is deserved. Lush and luminous, almost every shot will make you want to weep from its sheer loveliness. A starving young orphan girl named Qingcheng is offered a deal by a capricious goddess: The girl will be staggeringly beautiful and have all the wealth, delicious food, and fabulous clothing she could ask for--but every man she ever loves will die. Thus begins a twisty tale in which a fleet-footed slave (Korean actor Dong-Kun Jang) and a mighty general (Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada, The White Countess) compete for the love of the adult Qingcheng (Hong Kong beauty Cecilia Cheung), while a vengeful usurper (Hong Kong star Nicholas Tse, Time and Tide) seeks to destroy them all. Like many of the classics of Hong Kong fantasy--such as A Chinese Ghost Story, Swordsman II, and Green Snake--The Promise combines the epic storylines of Chinese mythology with the headlong momentum and energetic editing of kung-fu action movies. The result can sometimes seem absurd to American audiences--though these same audiences will happily swallow the absurdities of American science fiction, simply because they're familiar with the conventions of the genre. Viewers who embrace the conventions of Hong Kong fantasy will find The Promise engaging and emotionally rich...and there's just no denying the gorgeousness. Compared with the sterile spectacle of the later Star Wars movies or the clumsy, labored Matrix sequels, The Promise bursts with human warmth, dynamic storytelling, and elegant design. More Western audiences should open themselves to its pleasures. --Bret Fetzer
Description
A new epic fantasy set in China's mythical past, "The Promise" is a visually stunning tale of passion that unfolds against a backdrop of war as a beautiful and mysterious princess becomes the object of affection for three very different men - a powerful Duke, a brave general and a lowly slave. As passions spark and egos clash, lives will be ruined and lovers spurned and no one will ever be the same.
Customer Reviews:
Great Concept But Fails In The End.......2007-05-29
In the beginning a starving young girl named Qingcheng is seen prying food out of the hands of dead soldiers in a forest. While running home to share her bread with her mother she drops it in a lake. As she starts to cry the bread is brought back to her by a goddess and she tells Qingcheng to eat the bread but she will not eat because she is saving it for her sick mother. The goddess tells Qingcheng that her mother is dead and then offers her a choice of riches and beauty but all men she falls in love for will die unless she can turn back time and undo what she has just done. She's a little girl with nowhere to go and no food so of course this deal is too tempting to pass up and she accepts. A while later during a battle of a 3000 man army defeating 20,000 barbarians a slave named Kunlun with a speedy gift is discovered while trying to outrun the barbarians.
Kunlun's ability impresses general Guangming also known as "Master of the Crimson Armor" and is taken in as a slave by the general. The general has been informed that the King is being attacked by Duke Wuhuan from the north but before he can get there he is attacked by Wuhuan's assassin Snow Wolf, the general is saved by Kunlan but receives a bad wound trying to defend himself. The general can't make the journey to protect the king and sends Kunlun with his crimson armor instead. The general tells Kunlun that the king will be the only one without a weapon. Kunlun goes to protect the king and when he arrives at the palace sees a man with a sword about to kill a beautiful woman and kills him before he can get to the woman and then flees with her. Kunlun eventually is cornered by Wuhuan's men and is told if he jumps into the waterfall behind him the princess will live but before he jumps he promises the princess he will never let her die.
This is one movie that had the money, a cool plot, and even had a good cast to support it. I think the first mistake was the director went crazy with his budget and though I do realize this is a fantasy movie but there is just too much. There was too much CGI and it was done ridiculously bad, there were fight scenes but they were bad fight scenes. The fights were awfully choreographed like the director got his child to choreograph the scenes for him. You could barely see anything when there was a fight because there was a weird cinematography that was used during the scenes, it will remind you of the type in "Warriors of Virtue" used in a bad way. The story goes everywhere before it ends, the princess's character is written poorly. She's supposed to be in deep love but how does fall in love with a guy she just met and then fall in love with another guy.
The thing with "The Promise" is not the back-story because it is interesting but the way it develops is crazy its too slow and makes feelings unrealistic. How can you truly believe that the princess is in love when she just met the guy and even worse isn't even the guy that she thinks saved her. Despite a bad script the actors keep you interested in the film until the end. The settings are undoubtedly beautiful, which is noticed right from the beginning, but the CGI should have been scrapped and done with more taste. The fights which were suppose to be a big part of this film could have helped give this film more interest and life but that fails. All you will be watching this film for is its gorgeous settings.
Simply stunning!.......2007-05-29
I just saw this on dvd and have to say that it is simply stunning. I sat through it entirely mesmerized the whole time. The visuals are incredibly beautiful, the story was very engaging, and there's tons of action. Some of the scenes can seem somewhat silly, but as long as you realize that this is a fantasy film and let yourself be immersed in this fantasy world, you will enjoy it. I have the 103 min version, which I understand was shortened from the original 121 min version to make the story easier to understand. I sort of wished I had the longer version as I was sad the movie ended so soon.
Rooting for the Bad Guy.......2007-05-11
Chen Kaige acted in "The Last Emperor" and directed "Farewell, My Concubine" that was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film in 1993. My understanding is that this film made a lot of money in China; but for me it translates less well into our Western mindset. I enjoyed the fantasy part with the goddess giving Quingcheng a magic pact that she would be wealthy, but not have true love. Cecilia Cheung won Best Actress from the Hong Kong Film Awards for this film. She does a credible job as the woman who wants the one thing she cannot have, love. I saw Jang Dong-gun in the Korean film "The Coast Guard." As the slave Kunlun, he has giant puppy dog eyes for the lovely Quingcheng. His ability to run at the speed of lightning that comes from his childhood citizenship in the Land of Snow reminded me of watching an old Road Runner cartoon. After the death of his master, he agrees to be the slave of General Guangming. Hiroyuki Sanada who plays the general was in "The Last Samurai" that starred Tom Cruise. I couldn't quite guess what the attraction was that drew Quingcheng to him, but he fills the bravado of the character with excellence. I saw Nicholas Tse in a DVD that may no longer be available called "Gen X-Cops." While that wasn't the best of films, as the evil nemesis Wuhuan, he does a great job. Costumes and scene design are excellent and give the film an amazing look. Hollywood has been slow to adopt the emphasis on the visual that is now frequently seen in Asian cinema. The Golden Globes nominated this film as Best Foreign Language Film in 2005. For me, it didn't play quite as well. It was certainly an epic journey filled with action and romance, but by the end of the film I wasn't all that connected to the characters. I think I most enjoyed Nicholas Tse's nefarious Wuhuan; so you know a film didn't work when you're rooting for the bad guy. It is still worth seeing given that expectations are not too high. Enjoy!
Another richly appointed costuming and set department........2007-05-01
The story, very basically, is that a girl meets up with a spirit or goddess, not sure which, but that she will have wealth, but she will never know love, and that any man she does love will leave or die. Enter the handsome bad guy in the movie, and the good looking hero. There's several story lines going on. There's a captain who falls in love with her (lust more like), the servant who actually saved her in the first place who truly loves her, and the good looking bad guy who wants to possess her as a trophy. The servant type hero character is actually the last of a village the handsome bad guy wiped out, and so, he finds out that he has special abilities too.
There are parts of this movie that movie a bit slowly, but the sets, the dialogue, the story itself and the beautiful costuming come together to make this a movie worth seeing. Good luck finding it at rental stores, but if you like Asian Fantasy movies with vivid colours, moving storylines, action, adventure and richly made costumes, then you should make the effort to see this one.
a beautiful myth.......2007-04-14
I really liked this film. The cinematography, editing, and music make it a joy to watch. It's a great story about a love triangle, loyalty, regret, and self-sacrifice. The hero, the slave, is especially endearing.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon PSP UMD Movie MODEL- 11559 VENDOR- UMD MOVIE FEATURES- Crouching Tiger PSP Movie An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon combines the exhilarating martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo-Ping (The Matrix) with the sensitivity and classical storytelling of an Ang Lee film. The result is something truly unexpected: romantic, emotionally powerful entertainment. Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee took a break from making Western period dramas to fashion this wild and woolly martial arts spectacular featuring special effects and action sequences courtesy of the choreographer of The Matrix (1999), Yuen Woo Ping. In the early 19th century, martial arts master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) is about to retire and enter a life of meditation, though he quietly longs to avenge the death of his master, who was killed by Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei). He gives his sword, a fabled 400-year-old weapon known as Green Destiny, to his friend, fellow martial arts wizard and secret love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), so that she may deliver it to Sir Te (Sihung Lung). Upon arrival in Peking, Yu happens upon Jen (Zhang Ziyi), a vivacious, willful politicians daughter. That night, a mysterious masked thief swipes Green Destiny, with Yu in hot pursuit -- resulting in the first of several martial arts action set pieces during the film. Li arrives in Beijing and eventually discovers that Jen is not only the masked thief but is also in cahoots with the evil Jade. In spite of this, Li sees great talent in Jen as a fig

Awesome movie for the PSP.......2005-08-16
I first saw this Chinese-language film quite a while back on a rental VHS. Due to the poor tape quality I wasn't impressed. This time around, I simply fell in love with the PSP presentation. Great visuals (those lovely bamboo trees! and lovely Miss Ziyi), great soundtrack, pretty neat fighting sequences, and the PSP's beautiful screen makes all look so delicious. Now my coworkers who don't have a PSP want to borroww one from those of us who do have one, so they can watch this, too! Whether you are into Kung Fu or romance or just cute Oriental girls (or a Chow Yun-fat fan), this movie is totally for you!

Hell Yeah!!!.......2006-05-22
This is the movie world's LL Cool J!!!!
If it weren't for Mac and Me, I'd say this movie was the greatest of all time!!!
People, wake up!!!
You're so used to seeing garbage like Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Star Wars, House of the Dead, etc you don't know what a good movie actually is!!!
Buy this and watch it with your family on Thanksgiving, you won't be sorry!!!!
OH, almost forgot.... I strongly recommend renting this movie along with The Mangler, you won't be sorry!!!
Video Game Based Movies.......2006-02-01
Most video game based movies are bombs and this one stands out above some of the ones that cames before it. Mark Darascos is a great martial-artist and this film gives just a taste of what he can do.
worst martial art movie ever (it doesnt deserve a star if i have other ratings).......2006-01-09
im a big fan of the Double Dragon series, i had been waiting for months til the movie came out, after awhile this movie is such disapointment
come on, who cares about me medals? who cares about the super power? we want decent, authentic martial arts movie, we want the true double dragon spirit, man, what a joke, without the medals, the 2 double dragons are 2 weakest guy in da world, they had to run away from their enemies in every fight til they can get their medals, come on, man, we dont want Tom&Jerry
we want double dragon!!!
what a joke, why do u ppl made a movie that based on the cartoon that based on the video game, the DD original spirit somehow lost in this new cartoon, and now you were making a movie based on it?
why didnt u ppl just make a movie straight out of the video game, throw in some good martial arts, make the DD the 2 greatest fighter in the world, make them travelling around the world beating the hell out of everyboby, maybe everyone will buy it and you ppl will have to make DD da movie 2, 3, 4... who knows? after this disaster, the DD series went down like hell...
this series was so great, why? you ppl are to blame
all i want to do to you ppl is punch u in da faces, and stuff the stupid medals down ur throats...
magic medals piss me off!!!!!!!!!!
kick ass.......2005-08-11
Freakin sickest movie i have ever seen with friggin sweet lines like "i can see you" "no you cant". Then the guy gets a pole in his eye. Dude go see this movie, no need to rent it just buy it right away. Buy six copies and give them to all your friends you friggin hobo.
Awesome!.......2005-01-25
I absolutely LOVE this movie. It's wicked funny and has two pieces of eye candy (Scott Wolf and Marc Dacascos). I don't know how anyone couldn't love this movie. I hope that some more copies of it are in stock soon because I consider this movie a must have!

Excellent.......2003-08-08
My son is 4.5 and goes to Karate. He loved this video. It is also very good for kids who don't do Karate as it shows them how to handle bullys and also their anger. Highly recommended.
The Magic of Magic.......2002-07-02
This video is an excellent introduction of the true spirit of martial arts to children. In good taste, it discusses the realities of environmental violence to children and teaches them
the wisdom of running away from potential trouble, whenever possible. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the use of physical techniques against another person is a last resort.
The ingenious and creative uses of "magic", music, and comedy make this presentation fun and amusing to watch for both children and adults.
Get it. It's hot!.......1999-12-16
Your kids will love this wonderful video. It teaches children about self-defense without any of the hype or violence we see so much of on TV today. And the characters even sing, too... Great music. I give it two thumbs up! Highly recommended.
My kids watch it over and over again since we bought it........1999-10-07
God forbid that my tape breaks. For the first time I can leave my children for half an hour and not worry if they are allright. They eaven read the credits. My children used to watch Power Rangers, but it is to violent. Magic of Martial Arts should be made into a serries.

The Mr. Vampire films of the 1980s may be the most familiar examples of a unique Hong Kong subgenre, the knockabout horror comedy. But here, as elsewhere, the true pioneer turns out to be the Fat Dragon, Sammo Hung. He worked out all the basic moves (sticky rice as a ghost repellent; the frantic use of spells scribbled on slips of paper) in this 1980 ghost farce. It's a fancy-dress period film in which a gang of clowns, pretending to be spooks in order to terrorize each other, inadvertently invoke the real thing. Pretty soon everyone in sight (including Sammo's foxy but unfaithful wife) is conjuring up a hopping corpse or a nasty poltergeist, and a supernatural traffic jam ensues. (The same basic idea was recycled, much less effectively, in 1982's The Dead and the Deadly.) Hung's world-class kung fu skills prove to be as well adapted to slapstick horseplay as to knockdown action, and in the best scenes they work both ways at once. In the finale, Hung fights off several attackers as his body is possessed by one ectoplasmic intruder after another, each with a distinct personality. Sammo is never more graceful than when he's pretending to be a clumsy oaf. --David Chute
Customer Reviews:
silliness abounds.......2007-05-07
Fortunately for the viewer, Sammo Hung is able to just barely rescue this film from oblivion. His always interesting martial arts is the highlight of this piecs of fluff.
bad.......2007-03-23
On your website it was actually stated that it was acted by Alfred Cheung (Gui Meng Jiao) but after i have received the movie it was not.
So, i don't know how to rate.
I can't believe I actually bought this.......2004-06-23
I don't know what's written on the english box, but on the DVD-box I have it says "Amazing 30 minutes ending fight", but as the movie ended I still haven't seen that fight yet... During the whole movie there were like 2-3 fights, only one of the worth watching...
I don't count the fights against the mummy for fights, since all he did was jump around avoiding the mummy
If you like to watch two sourceres (sp?) keep throwing fireballs at each other, this movie might be something for you, but if you're looking for just a little bit horror, comedy or martial arts, then go look somewhere else, since this movie contains none of those elements :(
Sammo Hung is among the best martial arts actors in the world, so I can't believe he would ever do something like this :(
Encounters of the Boring Kind.........2004-06-22
Encounters of the Spooky Kind is Chinese Humorous Kung Fu comedy at its worst. Encounters features a repetitive plotline, uninteresting characters and a horrible long drawn out ending. I found this film tiresome rather than entertaining...
Sammo Hung stars as Courageous Cheung, a chunky 'everyman' whose beautiful wife is cheating on him with his own boss. When Cheung begins to suspect his wife's infidelity, the evil boss plans to kill Cheung, with somewhat humorous results.
When I checked out "Encounters" I expected it to be humor along the line of the Mr. Vampire series. Instead we get cheesy comedy with a lot of 'unfunny' scenes and terrible makeup. If you like characters with cheesy makeup and fake corpses crawling with maggots this is the film for you. If not, I'd skip this film and watch the first of the Mr. Vampire series. At least Mr. Vampire actually succeeds at being funny.
I swear this is the best movie ever !!!!!.......2004-06-12
Man!!!!This movie blew me away when i first saw it, just everything about it from start to finish it's just insane.
I thought when I saw it the first time I would just put it with my other dvd's. But it only got better with the second viewing.
This is the movie that made realize that Sammo Hung is the s***.
That's not to say that I did'nt know he was before, but this only solidifies it.I remember seeing a clip of this movie when i was little, ever since i've been looking for it but i did'nt know the name of it. Now that i've found it and i'm never lettin' it go. I miss movies like this, very inventive, great choreography I SAID IT BEFORE I'LL SAY IT AGAIN SAMMO HUNG IS THE BEST .But anyway like everyone else said the ending is just crazy.
Crazy in a good way, I dare anybody, genre fan or not to watch this movie and not like it. You show the person who does'nt like
this movie even a little i'll show you a freakin' psycho.
It don't get better than this. I've got nothin' else to say I love it. By the way is there anybody out there that wants to talk kung fu with me please let me know. I'm at (...)
Peace.

Customer Reviews:
Jing Wong.......2006-07-23
Probably the most prolific Hong Kong script writer ever. At least that I know of. But when he started out, he was an awesome kung fu writer. He has written and directed some of my favorite movies ever. Shaolin Pince, Prodigal Son, and Magnificent Butcher. To name a few newer ones-Last Hero in China and Royal Tramp part 1. But because he is so proilific he has written soem of the worst stuff ever-Raped by an Angel 4: The Raper's Union, Naked Killer 2 (aka Super Rape), City Hunter, Body Weapon...
But overall he is pretty good. I would say this is almost just as good as Evil Cult Master, or Last Hero in China (aka Claws of Steel), both movies that he directed.
Now this I have to say is easily one of the better new school kung fu movies ever. I figured this was another old school Gordon Liu flick and I heard he wasnt in it that much but was pleasantly surprised at how new it is. 1993 I believe, though you wouldn't be able to tell by the quality of the film transfer. It is about young fragrant sword(aaron kwok) who needs to go and defeat Shaolin. I think. It is a Jing Wong movie. You will see, but you have to try and follow along. Something that you will definitely notice is the unbelievable wire work going on. People don't realize how in movies like this they put people on wires to show how athletic they are. I don't know who the action director was, but he is certainly one of the greats. So the action is OHHHHHHH SOOOOOOO good but the child like humor just blends so perfectly with it. You still don't see what I mean, here is an example. Gordon Liu is praying at the Shaolin Temple and he notices someone is there. A guy comes out and is flyin around beautifully and Gordon asks when he comes face to face "who are you", "I am Batman" he replies. OMG I was rolling on the floor for a while. That wasn't one of the better fights of the movie, but the comedy more than makes up for it. Even though it is hard to decipher what is going on in some of the fights, the flying around and fighting overall is absolutely sublime and I highly recommend this SUPER weird flick. The ending looks like Kung Fu Hustle took a page from this(aaron kwok rising up) and while not great, it is a decent ending to a good kung fu movie. You'll see what I mean, it happens quite a bit. They just run out of time and money by the time they have to wrap up shooting and have to make the end as good as possible.
The dvd by Xenon proves again that they have to be the same company as Video asia, Groundzero, and Crash masters. Or AT LEAST ONE OF THEM!!!! They take absolutely no time in trasnferring this from the original film print it looks like. It is widescreened, but only about 90 some percent of course. The imbedded subtitles are impossible to read in the daytime scenes and then get this. When they break out into song(it's a Jing Wong movie), THEY PUT ON CHINESE SUBTITLES. HILARIOUS!!!!!!! The picture quality isn't all that bad, but I figure it's only becuase it's a newer movie and they didn't really have a chance to screw it up. So it is nice to see that there are better DVD companies coming out including Tarantino creating his own Asian Video distributing comapny. Now how does that sound? I don't think Tarantino would ever put out a release like this in this form!!
the movie is good but this production is poor for english audiences.......2006-01-12
i will go ahead and still give this movie a 5 star rating even though this particular version of it is very hard to follow for non-chinese speaking folks. the english subs are absolutely horrible on this film, and there is no english dub so it is at times hard to follow (especially during the daytime scenes where it is a white background against white subtitles) otherwise it has all the good (and stereotypical) elements of chinese cinema. gordon is barely in the film and that is just another attempt to sucker western audiences with a familiar face (kill bill). so if you want to see gordon dont buy this. if the production was better quality i believe the reviews would be better for this film, but since whoever "remastered" this didn't take anytime to make this easier for the average english speaking person to digest most will just feel like this is just another crappy kung fu movie...
Very reminiscent of Zu.......2005-07-15
This is one of the HOng Kong movies that breaks no new ground, does nothing original and has no overarching plot to contain the 4-5 stories contained therein. The Jesus joke at the end if funny, but if you want to get your friends as excited by Hong Kong movies as you are, this isn't the one to use.
However it's an enjoyable mess of a movie. The fight scenes are adequate. The pacing works. The weird motifs from Chinese opera are firmly in place. You can even forgive it for being marketed as a Gordon Liu movie when he's in it for five minutes at most (although one should note that the big name actor bait-and-switch is time honored tradition in movie marketing)
So buy it, watch it and give it to your friends. It's not great, but it's not bad either.
Where's Gordon?.......2005-07-08
One of the reasons for me purchasing the film was Gordon Liu's name on the cover. It turns out he is in very little of the movie. The English subtitles are poorly translated and at times very difficult to read. The story line is even worse, hard to follow and has a ridiculous "batman" vampire character.
Do yourself a favor and buy a better Kung Fu movie.
Not A Gordon Liu Movie.......2004-03-08
His name is on the top, and his face is there on the left and down again at the bottom, and he is in two scenes of the movie, but this is not a Gordon Liu movie. It is an Aaron Kwok movie.
The action is rediculous, sped up, and not very coordinated. The humor is poor, and mostly unfunny. The two male roles are played by very similar looking actors. One of them is introduced as being semi-powerful, but later on he doesn't use any of his power. There are subtitles over a Chinese audio track, but you can't turn them off. There are also two song number in it (I hate musicals).
This is one of very few DVDs that I wish that I hadn't bought. I own about 40 kung fu DVDs and this is in my bottom three. It is terrible, from the beginning to the end.

Customer Reviews:
Standard Chinese TV Series .......2007-03-01
One thing that I always see in reviews are people who compare this film to the Action Adventure wire-fu epic flic. This is a Chinese action drama. It's also a TV series. Not a Gung Fu epic. As an action drama, it's one of my favourites. Amazing action, a much-appreciated love story, and further background into the characters.
Remember that Chinese cinema is NOT American cinema. Everything is different. Different people play the same parts in variations from the original. And each variation can show a different part of the whole story. I loved the further dive into this world.
GREAT.......2004-11-18
this video is the best chinese action movie i've seen besides some I've seen a few years ago with Vivian Leung. The action is great, all the actors/actresses were Great! I liked it so much more than the original crouching tiger hidden dragon.... I would definitely watch it over and over and over again.!!
Colossal Letdown!.......2004-09-22
This version of Crouching Tiger is certain to disappoint most fans of the Ang Lee movie version. The special effects budget is nonexistent. There are scenes where the wires are vividly visible, destroying any believability. Unfortunately, the acting only deepens the disappointment. It is abysmal and amateurish. The story progresses at a jerky pace and the editing is choppy, (probably reflecting the fact that this is condensed from a 15 hour TV version), making it difficult to follow what is going on. Take my advice, save your money! Buy the Ang Lee movie version if you have not already seen it. Watching this horrific and degenerate version is painful and not worth the effort.
The soap opera version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.......2004-08-15
The Ang Lee version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon left many Asians with a bad taste. The movie version cut alot of the side stories and boiled it down to the bare essentials. Asian audiences felt that 2 hours was not enough to tell the original story. The same can be said of many book to movie adaptations.
This U.S. DVD release of New Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is essentially a condensed Reader's Digest version of the television mini-series that aired in China shortly after the Ang Lee movie came out.
The original series, like alot of Chinese mini-series, tended to explore many aspects of Chinese culture that would be unfathomable to Western tastes. Much of that is cut out.
This series plays out more like a soap opera with continuing plot lines from episode to episode.
It's too bad that Tai Seng edited alot of the story out as some folks may want to see the complete uncut series. But in the interest of Western audiences, it was pared down to a more managable 4 hour show. This DVD release would probably not have sold very well if it was released in the U.S. in its complete uncut edition with more discs and a higher price.
VCDs of the original uncut series are available in China and in Chinese video rental shops but there are no English subtitles or English dubbing.
Excellent Production.......2004-08-13
This tv production pre-dates the famous movie by a year or so, but, has it's own character and story to tell. Some incidents remain the same, as well as all the major characters, performed by an attractive and talented group of actors (I've developed a little crush on the actress playing Shu lin). This was apparently a much longer work attested to by missing scenes shown in the opening and closing credits and it's a shame Tai Seng has not also offered the complete series dubbed for the serious collector. What's left is a sometimes choppy, but well edited story that expands into many different directions from the movie, yet at it heart never strays from the familiar. Great martial arts too. Very Highly Recommended!!

barely but it deserves it's 4 stars.......2006-03-27
So most people do not know a whole lot about Billy Chong. Somebody who is more popular, though not too well known, alexander Lo rei is a good person to compare him with. he has starred in such films as shaolin vs. lama, shaolin against lama(seriously, these are different movies, and one is better than the other), and NINJA DEATH. Now hopefully you know who I am talking about becuase Billy Chong is WAY better than lo rei. Billy Chong is actually right up there with ANY of the greats. In my opinion there is only a fw people who seriously stand out in kungug ciname history. I will go over a brief list here to so sorry for leaving many out. Hwang Jang Lee, Jack Long, whang-in sik and bruce. These guys are all EXTREMELY HIGHLY TRAINED in martial arts, I mean Hwang Lee and Whang-in sik are grandmasters in real life, not just bad asses that have out of this world control of their legs on screen. Now as far as actors go I would say some great ones are Ku Feng, Chen Kwan Tai(who is a world renowned martial artist also), Master in young master and chinese connection, and Jason Pai Pao might be my favorite. So Billy Chong might not be in the class of those guys, but if I had to rate Billy Chong out of 10 he would be like a 8.5, and I would say that the person he is somewhat of a clone of Jackie Chan rates about an 8.6 as a martial artist. Now Billy may not have had quite the flexibility of jackie ut was way bigger than him and IS EVERY BIT JUST AS GOOD OF A FIGHTER.
So sorry I had to get that out of the way, but I hate the fact that guys like Alexander Lo rei and billy freaking chong get absolutely no respect when compared to guys like jackie. It truly is a shame.
So anyway this is a movie about a guy who is really tough so everybody wants a piece of him including this one guy who hires like a priest of some sort and can call the deads souls to go into other bodies. So he FInally gets into a body after he challenges billy and dies. But the main highlights of this movie are 2 things for me.
1.) That scene where the guy was thought to be dead and when somebody opens up his coffin he comes out and goes straight for billy's house to challenge him. I told you that everybody wamts a piece of him. SO ANYWAY THEY HAVE ONE OF THE TOP 100 FIGHTS IN MOVIE HISTORY. Now I'm sure you have seen movies like iron monkey 2, I said part 2 people, than you know that some directors like to speed the camera up about 20-30 times faster than what it actually goes, and if you have not seen any like this you are saying, dude that sounds like it would suck, I like to see Hwang Lee's legs in slow-motion, not sped up, well you are right if you are talking about IM 2, but this movie does it absolutely perfectly. The fights are so frenetic yet much more real looking than most movies you see. If you have seen movies like secret rivals and liked that then you will like this because this scene I am talking about rivals a lot of fight scenes in that movie BUT GIVES YOU EVEN MORE OF A SENSE OF THAT HARD HITTING STYLE THAT NG-SEE YUEN BROUGHT TO THE TABLE. I MEAN YOU WILL SERIOUSLY BE HURTING AFTER THIS MOVIE HAVING BAD DREAMS OF HOW HARD THESE PEOPLE ARE HITTING EACHOTHER. And when this guy actually comes back as like a vampire or something, WATCH THE HELL OUT FOR THIS AND STRAP ON YOUR SEATBELT.
2.) Almost forgot I had another favorite element of this movie -THE DAD, I TOLD YOU THAT THIS IS A MOVIE ABOUT A GUY WHO IS REALLY TOUGH AND THERE IS A REASON for THAT, HIS DAD IS A FREAKING [...] AND KICKS THE [...] OUT OF HIS SON MORE THAN ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW, so whenever I go off on the keyboard like that I usually forget to tell you guys AND GALS about the dvd quality. I don't have the blackbelt version shown but do have a really crappy version, and since I know blackbelt volume whatever the hell they are calling it I definitely know you will not get that great of a picture. The dvd I have has Fistful of Talons on the other side which is pretty good and comes part of the super kung fu(I think) box set. It's one of those videoasia insta-action sets. So the sound is alway varying and the picture is kinda bad, and don't expect to read very many of the subtitles, BUT IF YOU ARE PRONED TO SEIZURE THEN YOU HAD BETTER STAY [...]AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE BECAUSE YOU MAY NOT LET OUT A BREATH THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THIS FINE FILM.
Split on how to rate this film.......2005-08-12
I am trying to rate this film fairly, so I will admit that its more of a 3.5 than a 3. If you you like horror-fu you will definitely enjoy this quality movie. If you prefer your kung fu to horror, you may be a bit disappointed. While the entire movie was high quality, the ending kind of spoiled it... not that it was bad (and this is where my bias comes in) but there were too many wire tricks when it was uncalled for. The kung fu was otherwise above average and the storyline wasn't bad either.
Quality (image) was above average and acting was surprisingly good.
In the end, when I am split on a review I always opt for the "Would I watch it again?" test... the answer is YES.
Billy Chong is great in this horror-Fu flik.......2002-10-08
Billy Chong Shows off why he was one of the best old school Kung fu stars of the 70's-80's.
A story line that comes off as a horror comedy actually showcases some amazing fight scenes, and action. The film has some big names , and some faces you'll surely recognize if your an old school fan. Billy Chong and the Villian Moon are amazing in the end fight, and throughout the film showcase some real talent. Not the best old school film around, but one you should have. It's called KUNG FU ZOMBIE, and it stars Billy Chong.
