Great Production, but quite Catholic.......2007-07-01

I give this DVD a well deserved 4.5 stars. The production value is top-notch! The insite into three players (Piazza, Eckstien, Sweeny, and Suppan) ane two coachs (McKeon) are great. Brief appearences and comments by many other players. Excellent editing. Excellent use of showing the players and coaches are real humans who make mistakes, and are humbled by both those mistakes and thier faith.

I take one half-point for the DVD being soley focused on Catholic players. Nothing against Catholithism, I was raised Catholic myself and still have much respect for the Church. But the DVD description is silent on being Catholic focused, and excludes any serious focus on players who are non-Catholic Christians (Sid Bream, Gary Carter, Albert Puljos, John Olerud). I would have given it five stars if the packaged description was more specific.

I hope to use it in my Sunday School ministry, but being a non-Catholic, will have to skip some minor sections dealing with McKeon's devotion to a Saint.

I hope the producers of this DVD will make future productions on other sports. I will eagerly buy them, but I do hope a clearer description is provided.

Champions of Faith Review.......2007-06-27

This is a fabulous video! Major figures in baseball describe how their lives are enriched by living their faith. I bought this video to show the boy's youth group at my parish. I recommend it to anyone who wants to help young people (as well as older folks) form a strong faith connection. Champions of faith is a great video that counters the rhetoric that works to eliminate matters of faith from everyday life. This video has my highest recommendation.

We need real, human, heroes.......2007-05-16

I was blown away by this video. I was not sure what to expect. Baseball and Faith? I'm not a huge baseball fan (hubby is), but I do know many of these names listed on the video.
I was captivated. The hour flew by, and I was entranced. I loved every minute of this movie. Baseball stars - but you see them as real, struggling, human beings...the same as we all are. It was so easy to resonate with their stories - their ups and downs.
Kids need excellent role models and heroes to look up to. No need to look further than this video.
Adults need excellent reminders that we are all human, that we all fail, and that all that matters is our (struggling) faith in God. A thousand years from now, all that matters is our relationship with God today.

Talk about an excellent gift for Dads for Father's Day; for graduates from college, high school, middle school, ok - any age!

Never Watch a Baseball Game the Same Way Again.......2007-05-16

Get goosebumps!

We tend to compartmentalize our lives. We see sports as one thing, our faith as another, family stuff as another, our job as another, school as another and so on.

This video shows the integrity of professional athletes who are striving to live lives of faith as pro baseball players and connect the dots for us and our children. It doesn't pretend to make these men out as saints, but as men who "get it" and see that their sports performance is just one part of the big picture.

And it is well done. Not too heavy-handed or maudlin. Good for family viewing, for schools, for coaches, and even for Sunday School! Awesome.

Why is the format different from the 2005 World Series?.......2007-05-04

Why is it that the format of the 2006 World Series is different from the 2005 World Series between the White Sox / Astros? The A & E box set of the 2005 World Series is recorded and distributed in 16:9 HD and its in Widescreen, it looks amazing, its so sharp and the audio sounds so much better, the players and the background look so realistic, but when you put on one the games for the 2006 World Series its sharp, but its very disappointing. Its recorded and distributed in 4:3 Standard aspect and its fullscreen. The players look like twigs, they dont look proportionate compared to the 2005 World Series where they look so realistic. In all fareness, the picture is sharper than the 2004 Red Sox World Series which I also own, the picture quality on that is just awful but also keep in mind that it was before HD or on the brink of HD and most of those games went way over the 3 hour mark, its understandable, but if your going to make the 2005 World Series in such high quality wouldn't it be expected that the 2006 World Series which by the way was not as interesting as the year prior also be released in HD widescreen format? It doesn't make sense, if their introducing an amazing format the year prior, why would they go back to the standard version when they have the capability of presenting it in a much crisper format. Im disappointed because the only reason I bought it was because of the format, thinking that it was like the 2005 World Series it would also be in widescreen HD, but it wasn't. Lets be honest, the games were boring. The best DVD on the set isnt even any of the World Series games, but the Game 7 of the NLCS against the Mets. So without the inspiration of the widescreen HD format like the World Series prior, why should anyone buy this set? As a baseball fan it sucks because A&E gave you a taste of what baseball can really look like, they got you hungry and craving then they go back to their original sub-par format. I just hope that if the Yankees win the world Series within the next decade or two, that they convert it into the widescreen HD format... it would be nice.

Must-have for Cards fans!!!.......2007-03-23

This DVD set has all 5 games with Detroit, and games 5 and 7 of the Mets series. Of course, commercial free with great audio and video. World Series victories don't come around often, and this set offers a great way to preserve those memories. I have been watching replays of these games on Fox Midwest, but twenty years from now (when the Cards have wrapped up 5 or 6 more WS victories thanks to coach of the year 2021 Albert Pujols) these games will still be preserved for me, long after they are regulars on cable TV. The bonus DVD is neat too, with interviews from many on the team. A lot of funny stuff, with people spraying champagne all over eachother while trying to interview. Good, candid stuff that you don't get to see during the course of a regular season. If you or your loved one is a serious Cardinals fan like I am, this is a must have!!!

a great DVD set.......2007-02-14

First off, I'll say that I am not a Cardinals fan. This is a great DVD set, the best that A&E has done, although there are some minor visual imperfections, but overall the quality is very good. This set is the first without the MLB watermark logo, which seemed to be a problem with the other sets. These games are also the first to come with a spanish audio track, which is a nice touch.
For those of that don't have any of the other sets, each game is divided into the innings that are easy to get to. Each case of the DVD has interesting stats on the front, a box score on the back and the play-by-play inside.
The extras are also very nicely put together.
This set is not just for Cardinal fans, but for those that want to preserve a little bit of baseball history.

Great and deserving champions........2007-06-08

Call the Spurs boring, call them the "asterisk" team, call them dirty (The Spurs? Dirty?), call them whatever as long as you call them champions! Whoever thought that a small-market, fundamentally sound, not very exciting team led by a not very exciting superstar (Tim Duncan) would be a posible NBA dynasty? Not very many but guess what, it's a good thing! It's refreshing that a classy organization like the San Antinio Spurs are here to show everybody else that it isn't fancy slam dunking, showing out, tattoos, ESPN highlights, having a superstar with a fancy name or "street cred" that wins championships but unselfishness, fundamentals, defense and good all around team play that gets the job done! Go Spurs Go!

Great insight in to what it takes to win an NBA title, lead by a humble and unselfish superstar and a bunch of role players that compliment each other very well in pursuit of a common goal. I came away with a different perception and opinion of Coach Popovich and i really enjoyed this video on the suprs run to the NBA title.

Im a Spurs enthusiast, but more than that I'm a Ginobili fan. So I've really enjoyed this purchace. It's got a great recap of the spurs season, and a buch of other cool stuff, my favorite being the Manu segment. I don't give it 5 stars because the Gino part was too short for my taste, but more than that because it has no audio or subtitle options. And the Ice-man part is kind of lame. Like another reviewer siad: it's just him driving around, no footage of his basketball exploits.

Interesting DVD, would like to see a little more behind the scenes footage of Chris Leak and Dallas Baker -- but it is a must for any true Gator fan.

Perfect For Gator Fans.......2007-02-14

Being from Pennsylvania, I am the last person you would suspect to be a Gator's fan. I wasn't "born into it" like so many other satellite fans. It all started with a hat. I remember being at a Modell's in Philadelphia and looking for one that I liked, and the hat that caught my eye happened to be that of the Florida Gators. Needless to say, I bought the thing and I think after awhile the Gator Logo must have soaked into my head and I became a Gator fan. This was of course right around the 1996 year when they won the championship with Spurrier and Wuerffel - that also may have had something to do with it.
What I am trying to say, in so many words, is that this DVD caters to the Gator Gurus out there. It follows the team through the entire season giving highlights of some of the biggest moments this year in the Swamp and on the road. The first 2-3 minutes of the DVD were absolutely amazing.
I really liked some of the special features on the DVD as well. I was particularly fond of the feature "Final Thoughts From Urban Meyer" because I have not seen that interview before. Also the other segments of the "Season's Biggest" which included Special Teams plays, Defensive plays and best Touchdowns were exceptionally well done - my favorite being the Defensive. The "Behind the Scenes at Florida Football" segment was also very nice - I usually don't get to see that kind of stuff out here in Philly (no GatorZone channel) and I would imagine that Gator fans everywhere would feel the same.
The DVD provided a lot of good surprises that typical season-in-review movies usually lack. If you are a loyal Gator's fan, then this DVD is definitely for you.

Unbelievable!.......2007-06-29

The Chicago Bulls first championship season; super charged fun. This release was long over due additionally; it contains some of the greatest baskeball moments of all time... e.g. Michael Jordan's "spectacular move"-Game two. Marv Albert and Mike Fratello are a real treat calling the action. This is, truly my favorite set of basketball dvd boxsets. A must have for all Bulls fan.

Great, but could've used a bit more.......2007-06-01

If you're a Bulls fan or just a fan of the NBA, these 5 games featuring Michael and Scottie and Magic and Worthy will entertain you for hours. My only question is Why didnt this set include the 4 game sweep of the pistons? The pistons box set includes the ECF against Chicago. If,and hopefully when, the second Bulls Championship set comes out, it will have the seven games against New York along with the six games against Portland. All in all, its a hell of a collection. Just need to work a bit harder next time fellas. Get on it, and dont disappoint

Awesome, everything I expected.......2007-04-07

There was a user who said part of a game was missing, but it appeared that was how it was originally broadcast. The DVD package says it's in the original broadcast format, and it meets those expectations.

Just a few words: excellent quality and very good presentation, it's a pleasure to see again (after years) these five games with Jordan vs Magic.
I hope Amazon will be releasing stuff like this in the future (different finals like 1985 against Boston Celtics).

Needs non-broadcast audio track.......2007-03-21

Having purchased the Bulls' Dynasty Series title, I quickly tired of the network announcer's play-by-play, espcially the grating, innane, nonsensical Bill Walton and the try-too-hard Marv Albert. I wish they would have an audience-only audio track available. It would be like being at the game. I could listen to guys like Doug Collins and Hubie Brown, who give good insight into the plays, but they weren't working for NBC.

If God is really Catholic, you'll want to watch this DVD to prepare for all the questions about Notre Dame University and Notre Dame Football that will be asked on the entrance exam for Heaven.

That's my disclaimer for the review i'm about to write. Being a big college football fan and a Notre Dame fan in particular, i found this dvd to be an exceptional purchase, esp at the introductory price of $15. It is mainly a 2-hr long documentary on the history of the school's football program(produced and directed by Roger Springfield/narrated by Roy Scheider). It includes some nice modern shots of the school(for those who've never been there), has lots of interviews with people associated with the school(though some big-names never appear like Joe Montana), and lots of b&w/color highlight footage(some great stuff here including stuff from the 2005 season!!!).

Again, i'm not a Fighting Irish expert, but the info and footage seems pretty good and thorough. It goes through all the coaches but only the major ones get a recap of their tenure at Notre Dame. In other words, if you're a fan of coach Davie or Willingham, don't expect much, they're barely mentioned at all. Some things you might want to know specifically:

+ the dvd looks sharp and sounds really good off my big-screen and basic stereo hook-up(standard version/dolby surround stereo)
+ the dvd has chapter stops so you can jump to your favorite area which is good since some of the material repeats itself.(like highlights of a certain Notre Dame vs USC game can be found in 2 or 3 different chapters that pertain to it)
+ chapter stops include subjects like the ND vs USC rivalry, ND vs Army rivalry, Big Ten rivalries, classic bowl games, etc.
+ interviews are kept short, or if long, are interspersed with footage(in other words, it's not a long boring shot of the speaker. it shows who they are for a few seconds then cuts to footage/highlights to keep things interesting)
+ bonus features are:

The Marching Band
"Here Come the Irish"
Knute Rockne Speeches
coming attractions: "We Are Marshall"(an ad basically for the film)

Overall, great stuff, highly recommended. Btw, for those who were disappointed at the very brief clips of great games during the Holtz era in this documentary, be sure to check out that Notre Dame box set comin out in oct. with the full games(available for pre-order at amazon.com as well for a very cheap price).
