5 out of 5 stars Superhero comicbook readers hit a movie.......2007-06-11

I grew up on the Silver Age Comics (60s) of the heroes with high ideals and teams. My favorite group was the Legion of Superheroes. This movie reminded me so much of the Legion. It is a great clean movie that mom and dad can sit down and watch with the kids without embarrassment! No cursing, no nudity, no blood.....and a great story. Wow!! How long has it been since you could put all four of those ideas into one movie? Gather the family for some feel-good movie viewing.

4 out of 5 stars DISNEY PUTS A SPIN ON THE HIGH SCHOOL COMEDY.......2007-05-13

It's good to see Kurt Russell back in a Disney movie again. The story centers around a Super Hero Mom and Dad who send their son off to a special secret Super Hero school in the sky. The usual "high school" high jinks occur in this family friendly comedy with some new interesting twist. Lynda Carter has a small amusing role at "Sky High".

PLOT DETAILS FOLLOW

Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is the son of the world's two most famous superheroes, The Commander aka Steve Stronghold (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream aka Josie Stronghold (Kelly Preston). In a world where superheroes are an everyday part of life, their children attend Sky High, a private secondary school built on an anti-gravity platform far above the surface of the Earth, accessible only by a flying school bus piloted/diiven by Kevin Heffernan (THE KING OF QUEENS) and run by Principal Powers (Lynda Carter of WONDER WOMAN).

As part of the first day Freshman rituals, the new students are expected to demonstrate their super powers in front of the rest of the class. Graded by Coach Boomer, the retired superhero Sonic Boom, students are either classified as Heroes or Sidekicks; it is the Sidekicks who become the pariahs in the pecking order due to their weak or offbeat, or impractical powers (one boy glows bright yellow, one girl can shapeshift only into a guinea pig, Will's best friend, Layla (Danielle Panabaker) refuses to demonstrate her powers for ethical reasons, and Will shows no sign of super powers at all).

Fortunately for Will, the prettiest and most popular girl in school, Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), takes a shine to him. A Technopath, she can build anything out of anything, and helps him in Chemistry Class and with such projects as his ray gun. Will is soon smitten with her. Because of this "in" with the In Crowd, Will's confidence soars, and he soon begins to develop Super Strength and the ability to fly. Transferred from the Sidekick classes to the Hero classes, Will starts ignoring his friends, particularly the secretly-in-love-with-him Layla, who is heartbroken.

To needle Will, she begins hanging out with Warren Peace, the son of a mixed marriage (Mom's a Superhero, Dad's a Supervillain put in jail by Will's parents); Warren himself is a dour Gothic kid who can shoot fireballs from the palms of his hands.

Holy Pep Rally! It soon turns out that Gwen is not quite so nice as she seems. The Prom becomes a revenge fest, in which Will and Warren, backed by the Sidekicks, on one side, and Gwen (aka Major Pain) engage in a titanic battle between Good and Evil. The ending is a foregone conclusion in a movie like this, but let's face it, he couldn't have done it without them.

Looking at it coldly, SKY HIGH should have been a bomb, but it isn't, successfully blending the usual acne-angst elements of a Teen Movie (including the obligatory housewrecking party), with one-off Comic Book Characters. The result is light and entertaining, and rarely misses a beat.

Kurt Russell is wonderfully goofy as Dad Stronghold, both battling evil and sneaking Will down into the Secret Sanctum for a game of pinball---"Don't tell your mother, she's still mad at me for dropping that battleship on her foot" kind of dialogue is his stock-in-trade; as Mom, Kelly Preston gets just not enough time in her skintight Jetstream outfit to be truly satisfying on camera in her smallish role; Angarano is just teenage dorky enough as Will, but not so dorky that his transformation is unbelievable; Mary Elizabeth Winstead is just the sweetest thing in a skirt until she isn't anymore.

Danielle Pannabaker is the great surprise in SKY HIGH. Alternately shy and retiring, and calm and full of certitude, she imbues Layla with a kind of dignity none of the other characters have. When she finally uses her powers, they are entirely in character for her and yet unusual, a true expression of Female Power at its best.

A THREE-AND-A-HALF-STAR effort, SKY HIGH is good family fun fare.

4 out of 5 stars "I can't do anything more to help you. I'm not Wonder Woman, you know.".......2007-05-07

The 2005 superhero family fantasy "Sky High" is about a boy named Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) whose parents, Steve & Josie Stronghold (Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston respectively), are famous superheroes named "The Commander" and "Jetstream". Steve ("The Commander") has super-strength and Josie ("Jetstream") can fly. Naturally, Steve & Josie believe that their son Will will grow up to be a superhero, so they enroll him in the exclusive superhero high school called "Sky High", so named because it floats several thousand feet in the air thanks to an anti-gravity device. When new students (freshmen) arrive at Sky High, they are separated into one of two groups: heroes or sidekicks. A hero has a real superpower, whereas a sidekick may have a power, but not something powerful. The man responsible for determining which kids are heroes and which are sidekicks is Coach Boomer (Bruce Campbell, who may be remembered for portraying Elvis Presley in the 2002 film "Bubba Ho-tep", as well as his roles in the various "Evil Dead" films). Upon arrival, the new freshmen are met by Sky High's principal, Principal Powers (Lynda Carter, best known for portraying Wonder Woman in the 1970's TV series of the same name), before being tested by Coach Boomer. The determination of whether a child is a hero or a sidekick determines not only what classes they attend, but also their social status: sidekicks are generally not socially accepted by the heroes. Hence, when Will cannot initially demonstrate any superhero powers, he is designated as a sidekick along with most of the new students who rode to Sky High with him in the flying school bus driven by Ron Wilson (Kevin Heffernan). Of course, Steve & Josie aren't particularly happy that their son may only be a sidekick, but Will may only be a late bloomer, as he demonstrates when he gets into a fight with another student, the flame-throwing Warren Peace (Steven Strait), in the school's cafeteria. Once it becomes apparent that Will is a hero and not a sidekick, he's moved from the sidekick classes to the hero classes where he gets to spend time with the beautiful senior named Gwen Grayson (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who may be more than she appears. Will tries to continue to be friends with his former fellow-sidekicks, including his very dear friend Layla Williams (Danielle Panabaker), but Gwen and her friends want to separate Will from them. As the film progresses, the stage is set for a climatic ending.

With good special effects, good acting, an interesting story and good direction (under Mike Mitchell), the family-friendly "Sky High" is a very entertaining film for young & old alike. Those familiar with the Harry Potter stories written by J.K. Rowling may find some similarities between Sky High high school where students are separated and Hogwartz with its separation of students into four houses. However, whereas Hogwartz separates children based upon personality traits, Sky High separates students based upon abilities. Overall, I rate "Sky High" with a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it.

The idea of a high school for superheroes will appeal to teens and preteens, who struggle powerlessly with petty authoritarians, bullying peers, and their own rampant hormones, and Sky High spotlights young Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano, Lords of Dogtown), the son of top-of-the-heap superheroic couple the Commander (Kurt Russell, Tango & Cash) and Josie Jetstream (Kelly Preston, View from the Top). Unfortunately, though he's about to be dropped into the midst of kids who can stretch, turn to living stone, or shoot fire, Will has yet to develop any powers at all--and may never develop them. His development anxieties (and some entertaining metaphors for high school social hierarchies) contrast with a bubbling plot by an old foe of the Commander's to destroy Sky High and all of superhero-dom. Sky High has a great supporting cast (including Bruce Campbell, Army of Darkness; Dave Foley, NewsRadio; Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman; and Cloris Leachman, Young Frankenstein) and a handful of funny, offhand bits, but the bulk of the movie is bland and obvious. Younger kids may not mind the clumsy action scenes, generic dialogue, and tacky production design, but even comic-book-loving teenagers will label Sky High bargain-basement. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Straight To DVD Quality Embellished With Better Special Effects.......2005-12-20

"Sky High", the new film starring Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Michael Angarano, Lynda Carter, Dave Foley and Bruce Campbell is a throwback to the Disney Studios of the 70s, when they made one cheesy live action film after another featuring people dealing with strange circumstances like becoming a dog or a computer. You know, the type of film Kurt Russell got his start in... I honestly thought that these films were made for the Disney Channel or straight to video, but for some reason, Disney decided to release "Sky High" in theaters. Now it is on DVD, where it should've started in the first place.

"Sky High" isn't a bad film, it just isn't worthy of theatrical release. The pleasant story is filled with some acceptable acting, some terrible acting, a truly bizarre climax and some amusing live action takes on comic books.

Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is about to start high school, but Will's parents, Steve (Kurt Russell) and Josie (Kelly Preston), realtors by day, are actually the world's most famous superheroes, The Commander and Jet Stream. The Commander has incredible strength and Jet Stream can fly, so naturally, they expect their son to have some powers of his own. Will is no ordinary kid, so he won't be going to an ordinary high school. He and his best friend, Layla (Danielle Panabaker), she can make plants grow at incredible speeds, are off to attend Sky High, a high school floating in the clouds over the San Fernando Valley (yet another excuse for the smog), where the children of all of the superheroes learn to enhance their powers. There is only one problem, Will doesn't seem to have any powers. Once there, he and Layla run into the usual high school problems and cliques, except all of the kids have a super power. Will even learns that he already has an arch nemesis, Warren Peace (Steven Strait), the son of a superhero and a villain. The Commander captured and jailed Warren's dad, the villain.

"Sky High" is not a terrible film, but everything about it just screams "Made for Cable" or "The Magical World of Disney". The running time of the film is tailor made for a commercial broadcast, most of the acting would be well-suited in a sitcom, and special effects are fun, but not completely polished or believable.

Michael Angarano, as Will, is pretty good, maintaining a fairly even performance free of the facial expressions and mannerisms common among bad teen actors in sitcoms. As he meets Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the Senior Class President, and falls in love with her, he ignores Layla, who secretly loves him. He makes all of this seem natural and believable.

Kurt Russell is amusing as The Commander/ Steve Stronghold. He has the square jawed, pomaded hair good looks of a superhero, relishing the corniness of the role. He displays the sort of bravado, strength and witlessness fairly common in stereotypes of superheroes. At one point, Will has brought some of his new friends home to study and The Commander returns from a mission. As he preens and shows off for the young admirers, in his superhero outfit, we get the sense he may have timed his arrival to coincide with meeting a group of young fans.

Russell is really doing a live action version of Mr. Incredible, for the superlative Pixar animated feature "The Incredibles". Unfortunately, he doesn't add any thing new to the character and it pales in comparison.

The acting really falls apart with the supporting cast. Every high school stereotype you could imagine is evident. If the filmmakers had made any attempt to integrate these stereotypes into superpowers, a nerdy kid with big glasses has x-ray vision, they might have been more interesting. As it is, their powers have no connection and are seemingly random. A nerdy African American kid can melt. A Caucasian wannabe rapper can glow in the dark. A tough Asian girl can become a gerbil. Yawn!

Bruce Campbell seems to be having fun as Coach Sonic Boom, whose power is that he can speak really loud, knocking people off their feet. Lynda Carter plays Principal Powers and has an amusing line at the end of the film. Dave Foley is amusing as the perennial sidekick, who now teaches future sidekicks, yet is always willing and welcome to the idea of working with a new superhero.

As the TV movie hurtles towards its inevitable climax, we realize that two things must happen. Will will recognize what his powers are and use those to save the day. And all of his friends, who have been relegated to the second tier "sidekick" class, will help.

"Sky High" has a message, so important in any Disney Made-for-Cable film. When Will and his friends are labeled "Sidekicks", Layla frequently mentions that she doesn't believe in classes or labels. This is a great message, especially when you consider the intended audience for the film, but it gets lost. When the sidekicks help save the day, their powers are Unitaskers and we realize they could never save the day alone. In other words, they are sidekicks.

The villain, who resembles a reject from a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show, has a truly bizarre back-story. It is difficult to understand how anyone thought this would be cool, or interesting. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. However, I can say that it is unique.

"Sky High" will probably not appeal to pre-teens or teens, despite the prevalence of this age group in the film, it is much too light and low key for them. If you have a six to nine year old in the house, they might enjoy it. Otherwise, stay clear of "Sky High".

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good.......2005-11-07

Good movie, a total Classic! I loved seeing it when it came out in the summer, and not just because the main character is kinda cute... (just kidding).
This movie is hillarious, cute, and lots of fun. The characters stick with you for ages. Whenever they make a bad choice, you want to yell at the T.V "NO" (which, by the way, is a good thing, it means that they are believable).
I really recomend it, it's a great movie that the family will enjoy. I highly recomend it.
The only reason why it's 4 stars and not 5 for me is because the girl the main character had a crush on was secretly an evil villain at the age of 40 whose body looked like a senior in high school. If that's not weird enough, she turned all the adults into children, which was really disturbing. Other than that, this movie rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Sky High-ly Recommended.......2005-10-23

What a wonderfully fun movie!

Here we have a typical teen comedy that is perhaps not so typical. Our main lead is a teenage boy who has superhero parents- a Dad with superstrength and a Mom who can fly - unfortunately as he starts superhero high school "Sky High" - a school in the sky - he appears to have no powers at all. And at Sky High, all the kids are divided into heroes or sidekicks depending on their abilities or non-abilities, and so our main lead ends up in sidekick training, desperate to prove he can be a hero.

After seeing this, I felt ready to take on the world, and could not wait to see it again. The DVD is already pre-ordered. As a Disney live action film fan, I have to say I haven't seen many great Disney live action films of late, but Sky High is a return to form. So maybe some of the jokes are a bit of a hit and miss, but when it comes to the superhero cliches, there is an abundance in Sky High that adds to the fun. Mix in a Dawson's Creek type romantic drama and you have the perfect 12-17 year old teen movie, that's just as enjoyable for the rest of the family.

Also, watch out for Danielle Panabaker as the female best friend. If I was a teenager I would absolutely have a crush on her. Already I've ordered more of her DVDs. She's certainly a bright star and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her in the future.

Sky High is super highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I want to give this 6 stars.......2005-10-05

Bret Fetzer just doesn't get it. This is a great film. Not win-a-dozen-Oscars great, but a truly fun film for all ages. I went to see this partly because it has Kurt Russell in it and I've never been disappointed in a Kurt Russell film. Turns out he doesn't have a big part (though he's still great in it), but that's okay. The film's casting was excellent, the characters were well done and acted, and the story was cute. I laughed, I smiled, I just enjoyed this film from the first frame to the last. If I could only have 10 films in my video library, this would be one of them.

I guess the best thing I can say about this film is that when it was over, I felt great and couldn't wait to see it again. In fact, I *still* feel good when I think of it. I wish more movies left me feeling that way. Normally when I like a movie I see in the theater, I decide I'll buy it on DVD, so I don't spend the money to see it in the theater again, but I've saw this one three times. I'll still be buying it on DVD as soon as it's released. Might even a copy or two for my kids (who are all grown). That's right, it's not just for kids, because I'm 50 and I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars "it's great".......2005-10-03

My six year old son wants to review this movie because it's a 'five star' movie, and, he says, "It's great."

4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly enjoyable film.......2007-03-26

At first glance, you'll probably write this off as a kid's movie. In one way, you are probably right, it is a kid's movie mainly in the fact that your kids will definetly enjoy it. However, you might find that you enjoy it as well.

The plot is a simple hero coming-of-age story. What makes it interesting is that our protagonist is a third generation "hero," but not only that, he's the son of the two most celebrated heroes. Add into the mix the fact that he has not shown any "hero" powers, and you got a nice combination for this action-family flick, as our protagonist heads into SKY HIGH, the superhero school.

Now, for the blu-ray transfer itself. While I'm not a videophile, I was pleased with the quality and look of this encoding. Disney apparently goes all out with their movies in regards to PQ, and it shows. It also has a scene showcase, which plays all the scenes where the Hi-def content really pops out at you.

There are a few extras, such as the "making of the film" like featurettes, and if I remember correctly, a commentary.

All and all, I recommend this film for your kids, and even for yourself, if you were ever into comic books and the like.

5 out of 5 stars Sky High.......2007-03-19

This is a great movie for kids and adults. I always dread buying some of the more recent kids movies for my Niece and Nephew, but this one was a lot of fun to watch with them.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Super-Hero Spoof.......2007-02-06

As a comic book fan I am fairly critical of movies based on the topic of super-heroes. This one was very fun to watch and poked fun of every super cliché you can think of. From giant robots to very thin disguises of the true identities of the heroes. If you are a comic book fan particularly of DC Comics you'll really get a lot of the more subtle jibes. Keep in mind that this is a film for all ages and in the classic Disney style. There is no crude humor and no scathing satire but it is still funny and great for the whole family.
As to the Blu-Ray Disc, it functioned with beautiful picture and sound quality as expected. There were a couple of glitches toward the end, but I was not 100% sure if it was the disc or my player. These things are common with a new technology.

3 out of 5 stars Not too Bad for a B movie.......2006-05-17

I saw most of this on TV last Sunday night (1:00am Monday morning). That time slot is dubious at best, often it's junk but occasionally redeems itself.

For a B movie i actually liked this. Yes the story is very cliched, but making the "hero" an "actor" (e.g., "i'm not a hero but i play one on TV") added just enough of a quirk to take it out of the totally mundane (plus the girl he was trying to save had broken up with him). It isn't too pretentious, and there was something about the characters that was likeable enough that i cared what happened.

Robert Forster did an excellent job as the hero's "mentor" and the bikers weren't too retarded, especially Hank Dillon who did a good job as well. Also there's the usual dufus town sheriff who tries to save the town by being a total coward.

This is not a movie you'd want to pay to see in a theater, but as a cheap rental or on TV it's not a complete waste. Maybe on the same level as a Steven Seagal, not as good as a Jackie Chan, but much better than some of the lower level of the same type (though maybe not worth the time i just spent typing this). But then i'm always a sucker to see the good guys win in the end, even if i know what's going to happen. Plus i didn't want to go to sleep and have to wake up for work on Monday morning.

(P.S. i loved the beat that played at the end, and the credits song that followed, which was Streets of Laredo played by either Headstones or Randy Kiss(?); i've found Headstones to download but not this song, would love to find it.)

2 out of 5 stars Lone Hero?.......2004-10-30

This has got to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only really good thing about this movie was Lou Diamond Phillips. Admittedly, the only reason I picked this movie up is because he is on the cover. I came very close to turning the movie off, it was just sooo ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good........2004-02-26

I saw parts of this movie on HBO while flipping between channels looking for something worthwhile to watch. I thought this made for HBO movie was far from what I was looking for. After seeing parts of it probably half a dozen times and being drawn in, I finally sat down and watched it from beginning to end.

This movie has a straightforward simple plot. At a glance it looks like Hollywood stock and the average back cover synopsis at the movie store wouldn't lead you to believe different. But, this film is of higher quality. The writing is good, even witty. The acting is good. The action is a vehicle to the plot, not center stage. It is a light, benevolent, and heroic movie, with action as its backdrop.

Unfortunately I haven't seen anything else written or directed by Ken Sanzel worth recommending.
