4 out of 5 stars Funny But Cheesy.......2007-05-29

This movie holds a wonderful cast of very talented actors. Andy Lau and Cecilia Cheung play the hero and heroine in the movie. Andy Lau as the very talented swordsman and the Imperial Cat and Cecilia Cheung as the spunky, cross-dressing thief Shining Mouse. These two find themselves on the same side and falling in love.

This is a very fun but cheesy blend of comedy, and mediocre martial arts. This movie is a must for anyone who enjoys a cheesy martial arts comedy. It has a good cast, love, decent plot, comedy, and martial arts. Excellent movie!

5 out of 5 stars The Imperial Cat vs the Mouse that has a secret..........2006-05-18

Cat and Mouse is a romantic comedy about a man who is dubbed the imperial cat (which is funny you have to see the beginning to learn why he is called that) who goes after the Mouse who stole a sword from a friend of his. As he and the mouse find out the are really in love with one another... it becomes a game of Cat and Mouse where in they chase each other throughout the entire movie. Who will catch who? Will cat catch mouse? or will mouse catch cat? Or have they really just caught each other?

A funny, funny movie. Don't watch it if you are looking for a lot of action because it isn't an action movie. It is a romantic comedy with a GREAT storyline.

Watch it if you can appreciate a good subtitled story and a great romantic one too.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad.......2006-01-10

This movie is okay. It tries to be funny and often it succeeds. But at times, it's not quite sure what it wants to be. I laughed a few times, and there was some interesting action scenes. But overall it just kind of meanders its way to the end without getting much of a response from me.

I try not to draw comparisons to other films as that isn't always fair to either movie. But in this case, I have to mention the far superior "White Dragon", a movie much the same but with better humor and stronger action.

This is worth seeing if you're into Asian cinema and want a little light entertainment. Otherwise, nothing much to recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars I was laughing the whole way through.......2005-11-12

Some people will no doubt hate this movie and consider the time they spent watching it to be an absolute waste of an hour and a half on something obviously low-budget, cheesy and over-the-top. The plot is difficult to follow and the acting is often times painful. But I enjoyed it for the comedy, which is beyond a doubt Chinese and I'm pretty sure is parodying other recent Chinese films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Shining Mouse is actually a woman disguised as a man. Her disguise consists of a poorly drawn black moustache and a small beard. Otherwise it doesn't take a genius to be able to tell she's a woman. But Inspector Zhan, the "imperial cat", with whom Shining Mouse is in love, doesn't realize this until it's too late and he's engaged to some relative of the Emperor.

Of all the zany situations and scenes in this film my favorite had to be when Zhan has to use his famous sword to slice up a putrid piece of Rhino skin for a woman whose husband had a skin disease. Zhan apologizes to his sword first and says "I owe you one". To me this scene is the epitome of Chinese humor, pure and simple.

If you are stickler for understanding things like who is related to whom and what the plot actually about, don't rent this, rent something like "Hitch", which is also a very funny love story. But if you get the biggest kick out of lines like "Father, I never learned how to read", "An egg is an egg" and "I thank you for your love" then you'll have a good time with this as I did.

1 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL IS BETTER!.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

5 out of 5 stars Fun Comedy and Impressive Action........2003-07-03

I don't want to mislead you - the movie does have a number of action scenes. But they take a back seat to the comedy in the film. For me, this film does feature some of the best martial arts, if not THE best work, by Cynthia Rothrock. People will say 'Yes Madam' or 'Righting Wrongs' when they are asked which is the best Rothrock film, but I strongly disagree. While those films featured more of her fighting, the coreography also relied heavily on stunt doubles for Rothrock. In fact, you can tell in on scene in 'Righting Wrongs' that it's her co-star Yuen Biao jumping on those tables in a dress! But I digress - this film also features some impressive fighting by Sibelle Hu, which is not something I can say often, since I've seen a number of her films where she looked absolutely awful.
Anyway, like I said at the beginning, if you're looking for a strictly Femme Fatale type of movie like those with Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima, you may be slightly disappointed. If you expect something similar to the My Lucky Stars films, except where the sex-starved males take a back seat to the women, then this movie is definitely for you.
An interesting note is that I read somewhere that Cynthia Rothrock's martial arts training was mainly focused on the Eagle Claw kung fu style. She uses it for a bit near the end of this film against a Monkey Kung Fu expert (see the film 'Iron Monkey (1977)' for more Monkey vs Eagle kung fu action), which is a treat to see. Too bad it's a little too brief for my tastes!

4 out of 5 stars Funny for the kind of movie it is.......2003-02-25

If you're looking for something meaningful and insightful, this isn't the movie you're looking for. If you're looking for some Hong Kong slapstick comedy or looking for a decent kung fu flick, this could be exactly what you're looking for, especially if what you want to see is some bad*** women deal the kung fu.

I first watched this as a 10 year old at home with my family, and we watched on and on, laughing till our bellies split.

The premise is simple. The Hong Kong authorities want to assemble a unit of female commandos, kind of like an all-girl swat team. This is the comical story of their "boot camp." Sibelle Hu plays the training unit's tough-as-nails 'drill sergeant.' Throughout training, the female brigade's rival are the boys training for an all-male unit. Admist the hilarious training fiascos, these girls also make time out of their day to play pranks on the boys in a sorority versus fraternity fashion. And when there's no training to goof up or boys to make fun of, they play pranks on each other- not all of them get along. Admist all of this, they even go beat up unfaithful boyfriends for each other.

Seeing that her unit needs some serious work, Sibelle Hu enlists the help of a comrade. Enter Cynthia Rothrock. She "substitute" teaches the unit of Chinese trainees to help Sibelle get the girls' acts together. It's hilarious when the girls realize they were better off with Sibelle, because Cynthia is even more hardcore than their original instructor. So, when Sibelle and Cynthia join forces, the group of slowly grow into something like the elite unit they're supposed to be.

Aside from the laughs (and there are plenty of those in this film!) there are some really good martial arts scenes. Towards the end of the film, Cynthia has an awesome showdown with a jewel theif- when he uses Monkey Style against her, she shifts tactics and busts out the Praying Mantis style to counter.

One word describes this movie- goofy. If you want some good ol' goofy laughs and a nice bite of kung fu to go with it, this is it.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but silly..........2003-02-06

This is a light, slapstick comedy in "Police Academy" style. Sibelle Hu stars as tough-as-nails police academy sergeant is chosen to lead an all-girl police academy team known as the 'female commandos.' While at first the girls seem to be failing to become a cohesive team, Hu's vigilance, and the girls own work-ethic soon persevere, and the Female Commandos become a force to reckon with.

I really liked Inspector Wears Skirts, but it was neither a serious or sophisticated flick...It is what it is... A Chinese kung-fu slapstick movie, taken in this vein, it was pretty funny.

This is the first in a series of "Inspector" films. If you like, slapstick cop films, you'll like this one. The only thing I DIDN'T like about this movie was the rather abrupt ending and the poor subtitles.

3 out of 5 stars Woman Police Academy..........2000-09-17

Sibelle Hu is appointed to organize an all-women police squad in this Hong Kong girls with guns action-comedy take on "Police Academy". Her regimen is harsh, yet she earns the girls' respect when a male cadet vs. female cadet tournament ensues, with the women coming up victorious. Fang, the leader of the men's squad then falls for Sibelle, and they eventually find themselves on the same mission. On their very first assignment, they wind up bound and gagged by diamond robbers, until Sibelle takes care of business. All in all a mindless action flick.

The newer HK kung fu flicks suck these days, but this one is really good. The fighting is top notch like the movies from last decade, HKs golden era in action flicks. I was entertained and the story is like the typical Chinese vs. Japanese revenge story. Also features some cool ninja warriors.

1 out of 5 stars WU TANG CLAN.......2005-05-17

Oh man, where do I start?

The quality is the absolute worst I've ever seen... even for a Kung Fu flick. Scenes are abruptly cut, it's WAY too blurry, the audio quality is horrible... I couldn't even make out a basic plot because everytime people would talk, the scene would cut to some horrid fight scene. And believe me, the fight scenes are HORRIBLE.

This movie is the ultimate Kung Fu laugh-fest, though. If you like to chill and dub your own Kung Fu flicks, GET THIS ONE. If you want to see a good Kung Fu flick, PASS on this one. Don't say you weren't warned...

3 out of 5 stars classic martial arts flick, dreadful quality.......2004-02-09

A wonderful HK classic with plenty of well choreographed fights, and even a meningful plot (well, by HK standards). The story follows a former Shaolin student, turned Ching -- Marshall Kao, who is forced to eradicate the very temple that once harbored him, and thus to betray his own btothers, who are initilally incredulous of Kao's new allegiance. Torn between his loyalty and his friends who have all but turned against him, Kao forges a plan to redeem himself and pays the ultimate price upon its completion.
The reason for a 3 star rating is the horrendous image quality on this DVD. I do not recall the VHS being this bad, it simply looks out of focus most of the time -- a real f%^*ing disgrace. Definitely recommend the movie, but do bring your prescription glasses as not to be completely baffled by the impressionistic DVD transfer.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best kung-fu flicks ever!!!!!.......2003-01-19

this has some of the most amazing fight scenes ever, especially the last one in the prison area. the story is basic, about the shaolin temple being stopped by an emperor, in which one of the students from the temple is working for. he helps captures the students who are still alive and tortures them in the prisons for a reason (which i won't give away). definetally one of the best!!!

1 out of 5 stars Who gave this the ok?!.......2002-10-19

I didn't get past 10 minutes before I had to turn this movie off! I have no idea if the movie itself is good or bad, but this transfer is absolutely horrid! It's so damn blurry you can't even make out the characters' faces! Don't even bother RENTING this abomination. Another dud stamped with wu tang's name.

    1 out of 5 stars weak.......2000-11-14

I might be able to enjoy this film, if it weren't so choppily-edited and badly transferred. The audio is equally horrible, occasionally blaring and then fading out altogether. Bad, bad transfer - hopefully it will get re-released in a more watchable form.

1 out of 5 stars Wannabe kung fu movie.......2005-05-08

I have only one word for this movie: HORRIBLE! The acting was abysmal, the story line was non-existent....but the fighting scenes were actually cool... It's an entertaining movie if you ONLY want to watch it for the fight scenes... If you want more...this is not the movie for you.

            4 out of 5 stars UNIQUE.......2005-03-12

Well... Lets see, for starters the acting was horrific. The plot was a little cliche, but the fights were AWESOME. Many of the fights were VERY UNIQUE, but interesting. Although I gave it the 4 stars for the final fight scene with the drunken style fighting. You may find yourself laughing at the horrible acting though.

I recommend 36th Chamber and The Invincible Pole Fighter for a really good plot and fight scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Silliness, Awesome Fights!.......2004-11-05

Like many people have said in earlier reviews, there is a lot of "junk" to get through in the beginning of the movie. First you must endure the notorious aunt, who is indeed very annoying. I like it best when So's dad slaps her teeth out at the end. However, I found that the opium parts were not too bad since they were a central point of the plot (no matter how hobbychobby it may have been). I also wish that wong fei hung could have been a better actor as well, since he seemed to take a second seat to Donnie, even though he is supposed to be the superior fighter. Most parts with Donnie in it are tolerable, if not humerous. Like when he skips around the city dressed as a peasant and throws cooked goose around to the beggars, and when he is locked in a room to break his opium habit, hehe. One particularly entertaining part is when he starts beating that drum in the beginning to defy that female-led clan, and then kicks everyone's ass. I think that the Beggar So character is interesting, so the somewhat dumbed down plot is not all that terrible.

Aside from that, the movie is completely redeemed at the end with Donnie's drunken style, which is without a doubt amazing. It is the sole reason why I like this film so much. If you are a Yen or Yuen fan, then I would suggest buying this movie.

2 out of 5 stars There are many kung-fu movies out there that are better .......2004-11-05

If you want to see 'old-school' Kung Fu, then get the classic Shaw Brothers movies starring Gordon Liu and others.

If you want to see the more modern approach, check out the "Once Upon A Time In China" films produced by Tsui Hark and which star Jet Li. The OUATIC series has better acting and much more interesting and inventive fight scenes. The comic relief is also handled much more deftly.

I even found Iron Monkey which has the same director and stars to be a better film. Don't waster your time - there are better movies out there!

The fight scenes are excellent, the rest of the movie blows chuncks.
