5 out of 5 stars Bad Boys era revisited!.......2007-06-27

Finally, the NBA and Warner Brothers video did it right. This wonderful video commerative delivers the basketball goods. And, in addition to the '89 Finals, we get the Eastern Conference Championship Series against The Chicago Bulls: seven heart pounding games that brought out the best of both teams. As a fan, I am content with this release. In my opinion, basketball fans will be more than satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars another error.......2006-12-14

One noticeable error is that the location for Games Three, Four, and Six of the Eastern Conference Finals is listed as the United Center, which did not open until 1994; the correct location for these three games is Chicago Stadium.

3 out of 5 stars At least one game is NOT in its entirety.......2006-12-10

OK, I just received the set. Whenever I buy DVDs, I make sure to put them into my DVD player to make sure they will play. Occasionally I've gotten some DVDs that won't play.

All of the discs in this set play fine in my player, however, I did notice another problem. The box says that all 10 games are shown in their entirety. Well, when I put in Disc 4 (containing Game 4 of the ECF), I went to the start of the 4th quarter, and it started with 9:32 remaining in the 4th! I thought maybe that they had put the chapter break in the wrong place, so I rewinded it a little bit. I saw the last few seconds of the 3rd quarter, and all of a sudden it went to 9:32 of the 4th quarter. So the first 2 minutes and 28 seconds of the 4th quarter are definitely missing.

I don't have time right now to watch all of the discs in their entirety to find out if that's the only instance of missing footage, or if there are more instances of missing footage. But it's a little disappointing when they say that all the games are in their entirety, only to find out that that's not the case.

5 out of 5 stars Not Exactly A Fan of The Bad Boys but..........2006-12-03

I had to buy this set strictly because it includes all six games of the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals between the Pistons and Chicago Bulls. This was the "Doug Collins-coached/pre-Triangle offense" Bulls, before their championship dynasty. You could see exactly how this Bulls/Pistons rivalry was starting to grow. Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant were still too young and inexperienced, so the Bulls offense heavily relied on Michael Jordan. Nevertheless, the games were intense. The upstart Bulls gave the Bad Boys their biggest challenge in the '89 playoffs. This set also includes the Pistons four-game sweep of the Lakers in the NBA Finals that spring. Detroit had one of the best backcourts at the time with Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Up front they had resident Bad Boys Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn, plus the steady veteran Mark Aguirre. And finally, the deepest bench in the league with Vinnie Johnson, John Salley, Dennis Rodman and James Edwards. Whether you're a Bad Boy for life or MJ fan, you'll want this set just to relive the classic confrontations.

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-11-28

I am big Celtics fan, but I felt compelled to buy this set to keep my library of great basketball going. I have all of the NBA Dynasty Series, and this set is just as good. Great action by Jordan, Magic and all of the Pistons.

Kung fu superstar Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, The One, the Once Upon a Time in China series) makes his directorial debut with Born to Defense. When a Chinese soldier (Li) returns from fighting Japan, he discovers that his home town has become a base for the American navy. The arrogant and abusive sailors treat the locals with brutal disrespect, stirring up anger and violence. Of course, Li comes to the defense of an old friend and his daughter, who's been forced into prostitution. It's a good thing Li hasn't quit acting; the script is pure melodrama and Li's fledgling direction doesn't rise above that. But, as ever, the fight sequences are many and vigorous, especially a lengthy one-on-one donnybrook in a rain-drenched boxing ring between the diminutive Li and a huge naval officer. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Bad, just bad.......2006-03-06

I saw this on TNN, and NOW I have heard the worst dubbing job ever. The storyline isn't very bad, but everything else sucks in this movie. It sucks that it was Jet Li himself that put him in this position. That being said, he is VERY young in this movie, and can't act. It's surprising he is as good as he is in the Once Upon a Time in China series, because he showed no promise here. The fight scenes are almost watching in this, but highly NOT recommended by me.

2 out of 5 stars Weak plot, and bad acting.......2004-06-06

Had it not been for the few decent action scenes, this movie may have never made it past editing. Jet was young in his career, and was unfortunately handed the script for this film.

The movie starts off with Jet, a solider, engaged in a heated battle with the Japanese. He and a friend later return to the city only to discover that it has drastically changed. Foreigners are everywhere belittling the Chinese culture. Jet soon makes enemies with an American soldier, who will try relentlessly to destroy him.

Unless you buy the 3 DVD pack that includes Shaolin Temple, Bodyguard from Beijing, and this movie, I'd honestly suggest avoiding this at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars JET LI'S BEST MOVIE TO DATE.......2004-05-18

THIS MOVIE WAS DIRECTED BY JET LI IN 1985. IT WAS RELEASED FOR YEARS IN VHS AND DVD FORMAT WITH BAD PRINTS. NOW DIMENSION HAS TAKEN IT AND ADDED IT TO THE JET LI COLLECTION. GIVING IT A SHARP RAZOR CRISP PICTURE. THE MOVIE TELLS THE STORY OF A SOLDIER RETURNING FROM COMBAT. HE MEETS UP WITH HIS OLD FAMILY AND FRIENDS. BUT LUCK WILL HAVE YOU GETS INTO A FIGHT WITH THE LOCAL AMERICAN SOLDIERS STATIONED THERE. IM GUESSING THE MOVIE WAS SET IN A PORT CITY DURING CHINA WWII. THE FIGHT SCENES DONT INVOLVE FLING AND DEATH DEFYING. THEY RELY ON JET'S RAZOR SHARP SPEED AND AGILITY. I GUARANTEE IF YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE YOU'LL BE SHOCKED TO SEE JET LI USE THE FIGHTING STYLES HE DOES. AND HOW HIS FACE GET BEATEN TO A BLOODY PULP EVERYTIME HE ENGAGES IN A FIGHT. AFTER A FEW BLOODY BRAWLS AT THE LOCAL TAVERN WITH THE SOLDIERS, THE SOLDIERS CROSS THE LINE AND MURDER THE TWO PEOPLE JET HOLDS DEAR. THEN HE GOES INTO A KILLER FRENZY. JET LI IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTION STARS IN CURRENT MOVIES. HIS LAST MOVIE "HERO" SHOWED HE IS CAPABLE OF HANDLING SERIOUS DRAMATIC ROLES. JET IS THE LAST OF A DYING BREED OF MARTIAL ARTISTS WHO DIDN'T RELY ON COMPUTERS TO AIDE THEM IN THERE FIGHT SCENS. HE DID IT ALL BY HIMSELF WITH SOME GOOD STUNT CHOREOGRAPHY AND HERE HE DOES JUST THAT.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie!!!.......2002-08-21

Jet Li does a good job of directing this film. It's a good tale of revenge and all out hardcore fighting. Jet does a reely good job of acting in this film, the Americans don't do that good. Jet doesn't do that much "real" boxing since he uses his legs sumtimes in the ring. Anywayz I reely like this film a lot and the fightings reely good all out hardcore blood shed fighting. At the end Jet and the Tall American commander go all out using ther legs and chains, hammers, huge screws and etc. Good stuff. You''l be cheering jet on as he beats down the ones who black mailed him and killed his Uncle and neice.

4 out of 5 stars Jet's only foray into directing!.......2001-10-18

"Born to Defense" is the first-- and only-- film directed by Jet Li. Personally, I consider it a worthy film, even though it is not among his finest. Jet portrays a Waorld WarII vet who, upon returning to China with his army buddies, finds that the American and British troops are receiving the heroes' welcome, while the Chinese who fought alongside them are neglected. This intolerable state of affairs comes to a head when some thuggish US Navy members begin assaulting Jet and some of his friends. Naturally, this film can only end with Jet ripping these guys to pieces! Interestingly, Jet displays a talent for boxing, something I've seen in none of his films before nor since "BTD." There are some pretty good action scenes if you can handle the atrocious acting by just about everyone in the film, and the boxing scene that evovles into a full-blown bar brawl is quite good. This DVD has one of the most horrible transfers I've ever seen; it appears to have been hanging around in someone's bathroom for the past fifteen years. The four-star rating is just for the film itself. "Born to Defense" may not please the casual fan, but Jet's fans shouldn't miss it.

2 out of 5 stars Too Boring to Be Bad.......2004-12-04

Movie: ** DVD Quality: ** DVD Extras: ****

I've seen enough of Loretta Young's and Cary Grant's early work to know that this movie surely represents some kind of nadir for both stars. Despite their considerable skills, no one could possibly turn this sow's ear of a script into anything resembling a decent film. Loretta plays a 22-year-old never- married mother of a 7-year-old son; the kid is being raised to be just as morally compromised as Mom. Enter Cary as a victim of one of their scams; before you can say, "What the hey?!!!?", Cary and his wife are raising Loretta's son ... Loretta's moving in on Cary to get her boy back ... Cary's wife is all-forgiving of her husband's dalliance ... Loretta does the "noble" thing by walking away and abandoning her son to Cary and wife's care. This all takes a scant 61 minutes that drags on f-o-r-e-v-e-r because no one does anything but talk, talk, and talk ... oh! they also slam doors - lots of doors - in Cary's lavish mansion. It couldn't have been fun for the actors to make this rubbage, but at least they must have known enough to stay away from the finished film!

Certainly whoever wrote the insert notes for this Fox Home Video release never watched the movie! They identify Cary's character as a "dairy farmer" (he's actually the very wealthy head of a dairy corporation); they name aged 50-something character player Henry Travers (Clarence the Angel in "It's a Wonderful Life") as the actor playing Loretta's 7-year-old son; and they describe the film as a "heartwarming, well-made classic" as well as a "gripping classic" (maybe they had this confused with Cary and Loretta's later film, "The Bishop's Wife", which really is a classic).

I doubt that whoever was in charged of transferring the film to video paid much attention to the movie, either. The picture is grainy throughout with some noticeable jumps (indicating bad splices); and the sound is frequently muddy as well. At least Fox doesn't claim it was restored. There is a nice selection of trailers from other movies Grant starred in at Fox, including "I Was a Male War Bride" (1949), "People Will Talk" (1951), "Monkey Business" (1952), "Kiss Them For Me" (1957), and "An Affair to Remember" (1957) ... but the trailer to this film isn't among them. There's also a small photo gallery.

Overall, I can't in good conscience recommend this DVD to anyone except the most diehard Young and Grant fans. But if for some reason you insist on watching it, check out the jurors in the trial scene ... doesn't the man on the front row to the right of your screen bear a resemblance to the producer of the film, Darryl F. Zanuck?

5 out of 5 stars Nice Pre-Code.......2004-09-15

I don't want to be too extensive. I only want to tell you this short (61 minutes of running time) Pre-Code, is a goody-goody, with Cary Grant, and especially Loretta Young, who is great in it...she looks ravishing, great gowns, slim-fitted, beautiful face-eyes, fresh beauty, great spunk.

I cannot understand why (I've read it) Loretta was "stereotyped" and "dismissed", mainly in the 1930's as being a so-so or bad actress, and being only a "clotheshorse"...untrue...she's radiantly good (Well BAD) (chuckles) here.

It's difficult to think of this LORETTA...when one thinks of the 1940's Loretta in "The Farmer's Daughter"....or her other teaming with Cary Grant, the excellent & cute & sentimental "The Bishop's Wife"...a completely different stuff.

I wanna watch more early '30s Loretta, not only her virginal-good characters (like "Zoo in Budapest" (I'd "kill" to see this one) or "The Crusades" (here she's mostly "decorative" IMHO)....but stuff like "Midnight Mary" (I've read it's TOP) "Employee's Entrance", "Taxi". "The Hatchet Man".....

The quality of the DVD is pretty good.

Pre-Code lovers watch it!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting pre-code film.......2004-07-17

I quite enjoyed this film - it's an interesting pre-code that was released about 6 weeks before enforcement of the production code. Loretta Young's acting is pretty good but Cary Grant is kind of dull - definitely not his best role. Some of the pre-code plot elements in this film include Loretta Young's unspecified "profession" and lifestyle that involves men and clothes and some of the rather risque shots of Loretta in her underwear. I think the release of this pre-code movie, which was previously unavailable, is to be applauded.

1 out of 5 stars They should have kept this one on the vault shelf............2004-04-17

Someone should educate 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment about classic movies. Just because a movie is old, doesn't make it a classic, and certainly doesn't justify a DVD release.

Fox is sitting on hundreds of great unreleased films, while they end up releasing junk like BORN TO BE BAD. A more accurate title would be FILMED TO BE BAD. Dull and boring (in a poor transfer), this is a waste of time and money.

2 out of 5 stars BORN TO BE DISMAL ON DVD.......2004-01-29

"Born to Be Bad" is a very uncharacteristic Cary Grant movie. Uncharacteristic because it's at the beginning of his career, features him in an almost non-comedic role and has him cast as a man double-crossed by a woman of easy virtue in an almost maudelin plot. The story concerns Grant hitting the son of a woman of easy virtue (Loretta Young) with his car. He then having to make the mends. The rest is pure melodrama but pulled off with such panache that you'd scarcely mind any of the hockum. Truly, this is a very, very good movie.
TRANSFER: Unfortunately the same can't be said for FOX's transfer. We get a very dirty, very gritty, very grainy transfer that - although free of digital anomalies - is so heavily damanged by age that seeing the film is hardly worth the effort. Black and contrast levels are extremely weak, fine detail is lost in practically every scene and the ravages of time are glaring and obvious throughout. The audio hasn't been cleaned up either for a slight hiss and some unexpected pops along the way.
EXTRAS: Trailers from the other Grant films. Boring, unworthy and disappointing.
BOTTOM LINE: Someone should point out to studio executives that films pre-Star Wars are worth the time, effort and, oh yes, the MONEY that is required to make them sparkle like they did when they were premiered. Really, history is getting shafted here!!!

    5 out of 5 stars BORN GOOD!.......2003-02-17

This film impressed me with the tense plot and excellent acting from a relatively unknown cast. Corey Feldman is hysterical. The squemish might want to fast-forward through a disturbing scene where a woman gets her finger chopped in a paper cutter! Overall, I really enjoyed this picture.

    5 out of 5 stars ALL GOOD!.......2003-02-16

I really enjoyed watching this video. The actors were all really strong. I was surprised how good Corey Feldman is, and I haven't liked him since "Stand By Me." This picture deals with teens who rob a bank and essentially every thing that can go wrong does. The paper cutter scene is awesome...worthy of Hitchcock himself. "Born Bad" is "all good."

    5 out of 5 stars Darn GOOD!.......2003-02-15

Corey Feldman is hilarious in this movie. I thought that all the clever plot twists and turns were great. The last half hour is intense. Although I didn't recognize some of the actors, I thought they all did a really good job. Definitely worth seeing!

    4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-01-15

I think this action-drama was GREAT!
At the end its really tense and I just shaked the last 15 minutes. Even if the end wasnt as good as you would like, it was still wort seeing it.
And I think the actors did a great job, even if they warent famous.

5 out of 5 stars Born Bad is all good.......2001-03-08

Sure to be a cult classic! This gripping teen crime drama got so intense at one point that my girlfriend squeezed the circulation out of my hand! Corey Feldman is funnier than I have ever seen him. The non-stop tension makes this picture worth buying on DVD. You will thank me later.

My husband just loves Billy Jack. The movie brought back many happy childhood memories. "Rooting for the underdog never gets old" he says!

5 out of 5 stars The first appearance of "BIlly Jack"........2006-02-04

The Born Losers (1967) is the first film of 4 to introduce the character of "Billy Jack". Billy Jack (Tom Laughlin) doesn't really like townspeople that much. Today he is in the beach community of Seal Beach. A teenager is being harassed by a biker gang and then beaten up. Nobody wants to help the kid, but Billy jack pulls out a rifle and shoots the biker. Billy jack is arrested for taking "the law into his own hands". Four months in jail or $1000.00 fine. The bikers were guilty of assault. 30 days in jail or $150.00 fine.
When six of the bikers rape three girls, they also go after Vicky (Elizabeth James) and her mother Mrs. Shorn (Jane Russell) is frantic. Billy Jack tries to keep Vicky safe and get rid of the pesty biker gang.
Also in the cast: Jeremy Slate, jack Starrett and Robert Tessier.
Filmed in Seal Beach, California, Palace Verdes, Venice and Marina, Malibu, Paradise Cove, Big Rock, Pacific Palisades, Clear Lake Resevior.
Tom Laughlin and his wife Delores Taylor wrote "Billy Jack" first (under different names), but they couldn't sell the idea. So they started with "Born Losers" with Tom laughlin and Delores Taylor writing this story (under different name) and was able to get jane Russell for a part in the film. They were able to film it independently. Tom Laughlin also directed under a different name.
Deolres Hart (who had a prominent role in the next 3 "Billy Jack" films, appears as a pedestrian with children.
Mike Curb was the music conductor on this film. He was the head of MGM Records and became Lieutenant Governor of California.
DVD includes a very interesting audio commentary with Tom Laughlin and Delores Hart. Film production information and Billy Jack website.
    Followed by BILLY JACK (1971)
THE TRIAL OF BILLY JACK (1974)
BILLY JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON (1977).

4 out of 5 stars ''Out For Kicks And In For Trouble!''.......2005-12-18

Contrary to one reviewer's information, "Born Losers" was a smash at the box office the FIRST time it was released in '67. And it's easy to see why. It's the most entertaining of the "biker movie" genre, because it has a story and vivid characters. Elizabeth James is Vicky Barrington, a vacationing college student who comes up against a nasty motorcycle gang in a California mountain town. Naturally, the gang, headed by a weathered Jeremy Slate, take off after Vicky (who is on a motorcycle wearing white boots and a matching bikini) and two of them eventually catch and rape her. She's not the only victim. Three incredibly foolish local girls visit the gang's "clubhouse" and meet a similar fate. But they don't have a champion like Tom Laughlin (in his first appearance as Billy Jack) who manages to get Vicky out of danger (at least for a while) and subsequently falls in love with her. "Born Losers" has a great score by "Wild Angels" composer (and future Lieutenant Governor of California) Mike Curb, good acting by a large cast, and a fine cameo appearance by Jane Russell as the trashy mother of one of the victimized girls. Add some beautiful locations and some slick motorcycle stunts, and you have a "Born Winner!" Incidentally, beautiful Ms. James turned up as a police dispatcher in the seventies cult classic, "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry". She also wrote the screenplay for "Born Losers" (under the pen name 'E. James Lloyd'). [phillindholm]

4 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah, Now THIS Is A Billy Jack Movie!..........2005-08-28

Bikers (the BORN LOSERS m.c.) roll into a small town, raping and pillaging like vikings on a rampage! I love the bikers' names! My favorites are "Cueball", "Crabs", and "Gangrene"! These guys are fairly intimidating and somewhat disgusting in their attack on civilized society. They pretty much take over the town (sort of like in WILD ONE), while an impotent police force stands by and watches. Enter Billy Jack (Tom Laughlin), a green beret who's just returned from 'Nam and is definitely ready to crack some skulls! The gang is no match for our hero, who defeats anyone who dares to engage him! The fights are great (especially for 1967) and will have you cheering and demanding gallons of Born Loser blood! This one beats the sequel to death! No preachy-teachy / touchy-feely stuff here! This is Billy Jack the way I want to remember him, thrashing the badguys and plugging their evil, sociopathic leader right between the eyes! Also, who can forget the beautiful Vicky, that bikini-clad babe with the short, sassy do?! And, she rides a Harley too! Yowza! Classic!...

5 out of 5 stars Under the definition of Antihero is a picture of Billy Jack........2005-05-20

Before there was Dirty Harry, Han Solo, Shaft, Wolverine, or any other Antihero character you can name, there was Billy Jack. This character defined the word "Antihero" in the classic 1967 independent film " The Born Losers. Made on a shoestring for under $150,000 by director Tom Laughlin, the movie went on to become one of the highest grossing independent films of all time until Star Wars came out 10 years later.
Tom Laughlin is Billy Jack, an Ex-Green beret who plays by his own rules. Returning to the states after a tour of duty, all he wants to do is get back to a normal life in the California seaside town he's been staying in. A man of peace, this Half Native American trained in the martial arts will fight if he has to. And he will when trouble comes to town. A group of bikers known as the "Born losers" have come into town and are terrorizing the local people. Raping several college girls, the losers have the town in their grip. The sheriff won't arrest them and the DA won't prosecute them without testimony from the girls. All of the women are scared to testify except for Vicky (Elizabeth James) who won't give into the biker's threats and intimidation. Billy Jack protects her from the losers and in doing so kicks al lot of butt.
I caught Born Losers one late night on the late movie and since then I've seen it three times each time it got better. It's in my top ten favorite movies. Okay, the acting isn't Oscar worthy and the production values are kind of sparse. (It's a 1967 low budget film so I won't nitpick) But the story is so engrossing (it doesn't hurt that Elizabeth James looked SUPER hot in that bikini and biker boots riding down the coast) and the action shots so cool you can't help but hope Billy Jack beats the crap out of those losers.
A Shawn James Essential Video. Before you watch the rest of the antiheroes, take a look at the movie about the character who defined the words bad*** and Antihero.
