5 out of 5 stars Hattori Hanzo - Charismatic Ninja Hero.......2007-06-30

We found this series very enjoyable. I bought it because I wanted to see how Shinichi/Sonny Chiba became associated with Hattori Hanzo, since in movies Chiba tends to be a supporting character or bad guy rather than H.H. himself. I am not disappointed: we like the characters, the stories, and the combination of action, drama, and humor. At about $30 per hour-long episode it is a very good deal.
I only have two complaints:
1) we want to watch more but only the first season seems available;
2) Chiba's Hattori Hanzo does not say "VERY GOOOOOD!" even once! :o)
(Maybe it's because the H.H. in Okinawa who makes the exquisite blade for
B. Kiddo/"The Bride" is meant to be a descendant centuries later.)

3 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great.......2007-05-14

Great ninja action but for that price it should have been restored or remastered to restore contrast & color.

2 out of 5 stars WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH KIDS.......2007-03-07

This movie was not funny although it tried desperately,(perhaps thats why they didnt advertise it as a comedy).I got about 20 minutes through it and stopped.Only watched further along into because my kids saw it on the shelf(even they got bored with it).Although i saw it only 2 months ago..it is a vague memory.Do not buy this film unless u can get it real really cheap.Finding a respectable ninja/shinobi movie is harder than finding a good lasagne or shoes for that matter.Oh well the search continues,Any ideas?

1 out of 5 stars Not even Ando can save this train wreck.......2006-05-12

Honestly, the only reason I even considered this movie was because of the very beautiful Masanobu Ando. And it starts out interesting enough... but quickly goes down. The story focuses around three ninjas, friends from childhood. When one of them dies the other two split up and set out to avenge her death. This movie is campy, but not in a good way. The stunts are cheesy, the music is BAD, and the acting leaves a lot to be desired. I was embarrassed to be watching this one.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the Red Shadow I used to know.......2005-04-27

Just like the title... This is not the Red Shadow I used to know. Red Shadow is one of the famous Mangas back in 60's or earlier 70's, and was shoot in live-action TV series decades ago. Back in the 80's it was re-done into a whole new animation series which is what I grow up with, and the animation was a big-hit back then. Many toys, products were licensed under the animation line. I personally would say that the animation version of Red-Shadow was the best one. And I hope that they could make a compele series of Red Shadow Animation Series DVD.

In addition, the original manga is called "Masked Ninja: Red Shadow", and in the orignal story there are Red-Shadow (a school Teacher before he put mask on), Blue Shadow (a kid ninja who is smart), and White Shadow (a monk type of ninja who is older than Red Shadow and is his assistant). The original series has more like Batman/Spiderman/Superhero type of storyline, Red Shadow has two identities, and the other two ninjas are his sidekicks. Red Shadow even has a secret place where a man makes special weapons for them (Just like Q in James Bond). Kinda miss it.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but..........2005-04-19

Two things I immediately noticed: 1) Ancient china didn't have toenail clippers, 2) Nor did they have aerosol spray bottles... both of which were shown in the film. This cheapens it for me. While the action scenes were good, the acrobat scenes were highly unbelievable, and the part where Akakage disappeared in thin air were a bit over the top. That and the part where the master was creating fireworks from his fingertip. It was all done in a serious manner. If this was supposed to be a spoof movie it missed its mark big time. Maybe only a Japanese sense of humor would get it. I don't know. I did moderately enjoy the movie, despite the obvious cheesiness.

4 out of 5 stars Ninja A Go-Go!!!.......2004-12-30

This is a great movie. It is intended as a light hearted adventure. A younger generation's not so heavy journey through friendship. Maybe some people don't care about such things, but I do :).

It's hip ninja action with 2 male leads who try to do just that in that silly way that makes this a joy to watch. Personal issues arrise and we are witness to how 3 young friends interact with each other. In the end they come out showing what friendship is all about.

How can you not like the Ninja Perfect Landing? ;)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2005-09-13

Originally titled "Geki Totsu: The Insanity of Emperor Iemitsu Gekitosu", "Shogun's Shadow" is a non-stop action film featuring Kyokushinkai master Sonny Chiba. This film is based on the true story of a shogun who sends his army, led by an assassin (played by Chiba), to kill his eldest son and make way for his younger son to be the next shogun.

Ogata Ken is the hero who leads a band of renegade ronin who escort the shogun's son to a meeting at Edo castle. His swordsmanship is a certainly match for Chiba's and the duel between them is very exciting to watch. Both are quick and skillful.

The incorporation of Chinese martial arts in this Japanese film adds another dimension, thanks to Hu Jianqiang, who plays the mute guide. A former all-around national champion of China, Hu also did some of the choreography, performed by members of Chiba's Japan Action Club. Generally, Japanese martial artists don't have much respect for Chinese martial artists, but Hu is an exception and is highly regarded by the Japanese martial arts community because of his strong gongfu.

As in most Asian martial arts films from the 70's and 80's, the cast performed their own stunts; some of them quite death-defying.

This film is probably not good for children as several horses are injured and possible killed during the making of it.

1 out of 5 stars terrible..........2005-08-24

the film starts out ok, as a saturday-morning action flick which is decent. unfortunately about halfway through the film i guess they said the heck with it and just went full-blown into full-on cheesiness. horrible pop music, horrible special effects, really it goes from an average period/action film to just unwatchable. first half of movie- 2 and a half stars

Along with Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow launched a new fusion of comedy and kung fu. And it's easy to see why Snake has been so popular--it's easily the most engaging of Jackie Chan's early films. Everyone abuses and humiliates a downtrodden orphan (Chan) until he befriends an old man, who turns out to be the last master of the "snake fist" fighting style. Jackie becomes the old man's student and finds himself in battle with the master of the "eagle's claw" style, who has vowed to destroy the snake fist clan. Though these plot elements are familiar stuff, they're all executed with outstanding verve; the performances, the fight choreography, and even the obligatory training sequence are unusually complex and well filmed. Jackie is in top form and coming into his own as a star. --Bret Fetzer

I caught this movie on comcast demand in the( free movies ) section for the first time in over 12 years. I always loved this movie but never could remember the title. If you truely a Jackie Chan fan and havent seen this movie I recommend that yoy check out this one I promise you'll want too see it again and again.], it's well worth at least $15 bucks max. This movie has all the ingredents that a kung fu masterpiece should have. My two favorite scences are the fight between a real Corba Snake and The House Cat, I wouldn't spoil the conclusion so you'll have to see for yourself. And the other scence OF COURSE IS THE FINAL BATTLE IT'S AT LEAST A GOOD 10 MINS AND YOU'LL ENJOY EVERY BIT OF IT ONE OF THE BEST FINAL BATTLES I'VE IN A KUNG FU MOVIE JACKIE LOSES HIS TOP FRONT TEETH...LOL!!!!!

This flick is definately one of Jackie Chan's finest performance. I must have checked out this flick more than 5 times,,and can't seemed to get enough of it,,,I also though like usual Kwan Jung lee (Silvewr Fox)like always did a stellar performance,,,,,,,this is must have for the collection!!

4 out of 5 stars THE MOVIE THAT MADE A STAR OUT OF A LOT OF PEOPLE.......2006-03-08

    Just to name a couple
    1.)Jackie Chan
    2.)Simon Yuen(woo-pings dad)

I think that this movie is really better than drunken master.

Around 99% of kungfu fans no at leat of Hwang Jang Lee. The kickmaster. He has a scene where he jumps up and manages to land 6 kicks on Jackie by the time he lands. I rewound this for OVER AN HOUR. You are also getting one of the better performances of Dean Shek, and Roy Horan, and whatever the name is of the guy who replace don wong in secret rivals two. They really make this guy out to be a badass in this.

Now to actually talk about the movie. Jackie is an orphan who was taken into martial arts school. Since he is so dumb he has to be the cleaning boy instead of practicing the MA. Well he ends up helping out an old man from getting beat up. The old man realizes the kid has a good heart but can't fight so he helps him train. He trains him in the snake style. Jackie then meets a man who says he is a colleague of the old man, jackie doesn't believe him so tests him, and this is one of my favorite fights of all time. Hwang Jang Lee HONESTLY scared the shi* out of me in this movie. Just looking at him is scary enough, but with how fast he moves and the power in his kicks, he can be compared to no one. I don't want to give away the rest of this movie, but the rest of it is very good, and unforunately the final fight scene was only average. This is an experiment by Woo-ping that he perfected in drunken master.

3 out of 5 stars Chan's first flick that boost him to stardom.......2006-02-10

This is a decent flick of Jackie Chan's early stuff. Jackie had a good share of unsuccessful films with Lo Wei, because he didn't use Jackie Chan to the fullest. Lo also tried to make Jackie Chan another Bruce Lee. But this is his Jackie's first collaboration with Yuen Woo Ping (the choreographer from The Matrix triology, Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Unleased), and he introduced Jackie to the genre of kung-fu comedy.

This DVD (the Columbian Tristar version) is the second-best version out there. This version, however, cuts out a brief fight between a cat and a snake (this fight scene is important to the plot). To get the full story, buy the Mei Ah version, or the Hong Kong version.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible Quality.......2006-01-29

This is my favorite Jackie Chan movie of all time, and unfortunately I was trying to save a few dollars by buying the cheaper one, big mistake! This thing will hardly play at all, very poor quality image. It is not worth the disk it's on. Now I have to get the remastered one anyway, sigh. Lesson learned.

3 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE picture quality, but Snake in the Monkey's Shadow is UNCUT!!!.......2007-04-29

This DVD would get a 4 star rating, except for the fact that 'Snake in the Monkey's Shadow' has extremely bad picture quality. It looks like Videoasia found the film reel in a lake and just dried it out before transferring it to DVD. While the picture is washed out, it is still watchable, and, it is UNCUT!!

I will save my full review of this in case a remastered uncut version ever comes out, but I will tell you this movie is one of my personal favorites. The snake style has never looked so good. Wilson Tong is by far one of the best snake stylists ever to appear on screen and he really lets loose as one of the villains. I don't like John Chiang in most of his old school movies (I do like a lot of the work he did in the late 80's), but he looks outstanding in this old school masterpiece. And Pomson Shi's monkey style absolutely has to be seen.

I won't talk about the Dorian Tan movie 'Horror Holiday' because I couldn't follow it and it's one of the biggest pieces of garbage I have ever seen, but this DVD is worth it for 'Snake in the Monkey's Shadow'. The reason this movie being uncut is so important is because there is a very unique scene where one of Chiang's 2 teachers tells Chiang that his pet baboon is actually his kung fu teacher. Once Chiang's teacher dies, he watches the baboon fight a snake and learns how to beat the 2 snake masters that killed his teachers. Hopefully no animal rights groups have heard of this movie because they would absolutely flip out (and with good reason), but it is a very good scene and by far the longest animal fight I have ever witnessed in a kung fu movie. Not quite as good as the hawk type bird fighting the monkey in 'Iron Monkey', but better than the cat fighting the snake in 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow'. Watching it uncut definitely makes a big difference since all other DVD releases not only cut out the baboon fighting the 10 foot cobra, they also cut out the flashbacks in the final fight.

'Snake in the Monkey's Shadow' gets a very solid 4/5 rating from me. Hardly any faults to be found. And great kung fu of course!

    1 out of 5 stars Great Kung Fu-bad reproduction.......2005-12-15

This is a great Kung Fu movie that I have owned for years on VHS. When it came out on DVD, I was quick to pick up a copy. I definitely should have waited. The reproduction of this movie is almost unwatchable. Red shadows litter the movie and blur many details in the movie. As a matter of fact this DVD looks like it was copied from a poor VHS using crappy duplication equipment. The infamous rising line that comes from poor VHS duplication is present in this edition. Bottom Line-Movie = 5 stars and quality of reproduction = unwatchable.

2 out of 5 stars Pure Cheez Whiz.......2006-11-18

I really think that this was made INTENTIONALLY bad! It must fall under the category of "so bad its good." A title bestowed upon classic B movie cheesey ragu sauce like "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Ok so this is no Plan 9 but anything with zombies and Tony todd in the same sentence should be at least DECENT?? NOT SO! Despite having the usually good Tony Todd (Candyman, Night of the living dead remake ) and Tony Leung ( martial arts stunman to Bruce Lee and expert martial arts master hissdamnself ) this is pretty terrible. It is more of an exploitation horror flick, a very cheesy one at that, that has plenty of girl on girl sex and gore. The acting is terrible, and even the stunts are pretty low rate. This is surprising since Tony Leung is a master of the form. The budget they had making this must have been next to nothing. Besides some cool lesbian soft core and a few deent kicks and punches, this is the worst horror movie I've seen in awhile! It incorporates zombies into the already really corny mix of occult and soft core porn. I think this had zombies solely because of Tony Todd, a "zombie flick" alumnus. Better than "Day of the Dead 2" but will this go down in the annals of a "Candyman" or "Night of the Living Dead?" Uhhhh, no! the placement of zombies is just a ploy to get Romero fans and general fans of horror to watch this. It comes off more as reason to touch oneself with ya frat buddies! Really bad and only if you MUST go so low at least absorb the cheese factor for all its worth.

1 out of 5 stars Crappy horror film is also a crappy women-in-prison film!.......2006-06-02

How could director Derek Wan have possibly screwed this one up?

I mean, yes, it was almost certainly going to be campy, mixing in zombies with pretty girls behind bars, but campy is supposed to be fun, isn't it? This movie is NOT fun. It's stupid and uninteresting.

Margaret Baker was very well cast as a predatory lesbian guard who sets her sights on pretty female inmates like Misty Mundae and Ruby Larocca. But aside from some brief conversation, nothing ever happens! There's not one halfway decent girls-molesting-other-girls scene in this entire film! Obviously the decision was made to get right to the stupid zombies instead.

      What a disappointing dud!

      1 out of 5 stars Completely redundant........2006-05-06

One would think that Fangoria editor Michael Gingold would have seen enough crappy horror movies to know when he was contributing to the problem, but Shadow: Dead Riot stands as testament to the opposite. It's a good thing that a healthy fraction of the horror fan population seems to relish any movie with bare breasts, gore, and heavy metal tunes, because those are the only people who will give this picture's investors a return on their money.

Skip this flick and go with one of the half-dozen GOOD zombie movies released in the last ten years: 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, something else besides this.

      3 out of 5 stars Sciamachy.......2006-04-14

There are shelves full of horror films superior to this one. It is not even in the same category as 28 Days Later, for example, and barely allowable on a list including the low budget 2000 Maniacs. That said, Shadow: Dead Riot nevertheless is better than one might expect. It has a watchable mix of mayhem, sleaze, and dark humor. If much of the cast seems plucked off a Jerry Springer Show, this is appropriate for the inmates of the run-down women's prison in which nearly the entire action takes place. Carla Greene makes her rough-edged character Solitaire sympathetic enough to build suspense when she is put in danger. Most horror fans will find this movie sufficiently entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Tony Todd, womens prison, zombies...what's not to like?.......2006-04-08

Well, you'd think this had the makings of a cult classic ala "Manos" or "Plan 9"...they've even advertised martial arts. How can you go wrong with all these elements? Oh yeah, don't write any type of script, get the worst actors you can possibly find (even Tony's horrible in this) and shoot the whole mess on video. This movie is so awful it can't even be enjoyed in that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" way.
"Shadow: Dead Riot" is, hand's down, the worst movie I've seen in a decade. Stay very far away from this. I'd give it a zero rating if allowed.
