Fans of The Matrix who exclaimed over the fight sequences staged by Yuen Woo-ping should get a load of what he can do when he's really in his element, deploying classic martial arts moves with an updated body-slamming intensity. In Magnificent Butcher you also get a sketch history of Hong Kong action cinema along the way. The plot is a mishmash about the kidnapping of the daughter of a local merchant; the fun is in the character turns and the electrifying combat scenes. Aging martial arts star Kwan Tak-hing returns to the role of real-life Cantonese nationalist folk hero Wong Fei-hung, a character he owned in the 1950s in a long string of B movies. Sammo Hung stars as Butcher Ah-wing, Wong's number one student, the character played by the even tubbier Kent Cheng in the Once Upon a Time in China series, to Jet Li's upright younger version of Wong. Kwan wisely leaves the hard action to his younger costars, but he does some deft, elegant tricks with furniture and calligraphy brushes, proof positive that he still has all the chops of a kung fu master, everything but the brute strength. (He actually makes mere strength look rather crass.) --David Chute

Description
Hailed as one of the greatest kung-fu movies of all time, Magnificent Butcher is a powerhouse of martial arts action starring Hong Kong Legend Sammo Hung ("Martial Law" - hit TV series), and directed by Yuen Woo-ping who brought his highly inventive fight choreography to blockbuster hits "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The Matrix". A student at master Wong-Fei-hung's martial academy, chubby and likeable butcher Lam Sai-wing (Sammo Hung) constantly lands in trouble - no more so than when he comes to the rescue of Kao Da-Hoi (Yuen Biao), the son of Master Ko (Lee Hoi-san) who heads opposing kung-fu school the Five Dragons. The good-hearted Sai-wing never suspects that Da-hoi is plotting against him by orchestrating a series of events to frame Sai-wing for murder of Da-hoi's half-sister. Hot for vengeance and to clear his good name, sai-wing first faces off against Da-hoi, leading to the ultimate martial arts showdown when Sammo Hung launches his 'five animals' against lee Hoi-san's 'five elements' fung-fu style!

I finally got around to seeing this, and it will be a while before it leaves my DVD player.......2007-05-06
Sammo Hung stars as Butcher Wing, the famous student of Wong Fei Hong, and Master Wong is played by Kwan Tak Hing! Kwan would be the standout performer, except for the fact that he only has a cameo and the rest of the cast does such a good job. When Sammo's brother comes to town, he gets fooled by Fung Hak-on and has to fight for his life when he doesn't give Hak-on his money. His wife gets kidnapped for Hak-on's own personal pleasure, and Sammo goes to take down who he thinks the kidnapper is, a drunken master character (played by Fan Mei Sheng) based on Simon Yuen from Drunken Master. When the drunk tells Sammo all that has happened, Sammo goes to rescue his brother's wife. He also rescues a girl who is actually Master Ko's daughter. Ko is the master of the rival kung fu school of Wong Fei Hung and Sammo must now battle Master Ko's men after Hak-on frames Sammo for killing Ko's daughter.
The story is good, but the action is out of this world. This is Sammo's best fighting performance of his career, but the rest of the cast is just as good. Lee Hoi San gives maybe his best performance ever, Chung Fat's Cat's Claw puts even Jackie Chan to shame, and Lam Ching Ying (he uses a fan to fight with) shines brightly in his first major fighting role. After making about 100 movies playing Wong Fei Hong, KWan Tak Hing is probably the brightest spot in the whole movie. He is old, but his single fight scene is just as good as the others. Similiar to Drunken Master and Dance Of The Drunk Mantis, the stunt doubling for Fan Mei Sheng's drunken character is very fun to watch. Usually when I watch a movie that everyone says is great, it rarely meets my expectations. 'The Magnificent Butcher' is one of the rare exceptions. It is a kung fu fan's dream movie. The cast also includes Yuen Biao and Wei Pai (the snake from Five Deadly Venoms), and a lot of character actors from Sammo and Yuen Woo Ping's other movies. Yuen Biao has maybe the best fight of the movie against Lam Ching Ying, but there are so many great fights to choose from.
5/5
Make sure you get the Deltamac or Fox/Fortune Star version. Both have very good sound and picture quality.
Magnificient Kung Fu Movie for anyone interested in Kung Fu films.......2007-02-03
This movie is very Awesome! The previous reviewers I agree with their opinions about the movie. If the movie has a very positive rating then that's means you should consider purchasing it. I am a fan of Kung Fu and Yuen Woo Ping films. I gurantee anyone who loves Kung Fu movies, will especially love this film.
Old "skool" Kung fu!!.......2006-06-07
This classic is definately Sammo Hung's best performance. The art of kung fu, very present and entertaining. Importantly,,the choreography very clear and transparent. This flick is a must have,,you will not be dissapointed!!
ONE OF THE GREATEST ............2006-04-29
great storyline and great action. One of sammo hungs first movies , and this was before prodigal son .Sammo had films like warroirs two also classic under his belt.
The cast =9.5/10 sammo hung ,yuen biao , kwang tak hing , lam ching ying ,
The plot 8/10
rival schools ,go head to head due to accidental trouble cuased by butcher wing[sammo hung]
sammo gets framed for murder ...and that gives much more serious action
it is a comedy and seriuos film. Which combines greatly.
action = 10/10
yuen wo ping people.....one of the greatest fight cheoraphers in martial art history. Also note , matrix, kill bill ect
Do yourself a favour and buy this.
An average movie with moments of brilliance.......2006-03-07
The title of my review says it all. I personally bought the DVD because I'm a Jackie Chan/ Sammo Hung fan. Their style of fighting is conducive to the big screen. If they aren't kicking someone's ass with brilliant moves, they are falling on their asses in humorous situations. It's entertaining if you can appreciate slap stick humor. For people like that, I rate this movie a 5, but most people are watching these movies for amazing martial arts, and this movie doesn't really consistently give you that. There are two fights that are really very good, and one that is absolutely amazing. You should buy this movie just to see the fight that comes in the middle of it. I won't explain any further, I'll let you enjoy it for yourself. It's a pleasant suprise at the time that it comes.
