Product Description

Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, a multidimensional study of one of the biggest business scandals in American history. The chronicle takes a look at one of the greatest corporate disasters in history, in which top executives from the 7th largest company in this country walked away with over one billion dollars, leaving investors and employees with nothing. The film features insider accounts and rare corporate audio and video tapes that reveal colossal personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the utter moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy. The human drama that unfolds within Enron's walls resembles a Greek tragedy and produces a domino effect that could shape the face of our economy and ethical code for years to come.

One of the greatest scandals in American corporate history is chronicled in the riveting documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. Based on the bestselling book by Fortune magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkin, and directed by Alex Gibney (who also produced The Trials of Henry Kissinger), the film is an epic morality tale, drawing upon a wealth of insider interviews and archival material to show how Enron, once the nation's seventh largest corporate entity, essentially faked its bookkeeping to report profits that never existed. The corrupt and closely-guarded mismanagement by Enron executives (including Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, later placed on criminal trial) is revealed through such heinous concepts as "Hypothetical Future Value" (a way of reaping fortunes based on false profit projections) and the use of offshore "shell" companies to hide the massive losses that eventually toppled the company (along with the venerable Arthur Anderson accounting firm) and left 20,000 employees jobless. As a maddening portrait of hubris and white-collar crime, Enron transcends political and corporate boundaries by showing how smart and powerful men grew blinded by greed and brought ruin upon themselves, along with thousands of otherwise innocent victims. For better and worse, it's a perfect double-feature with eye-opening 2004 documentary The Corporation. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Well done all around.......2007-06-20

Well made and interesting documentary, that tells the whole story of Enron from start to finish. Amazing how much free reign businesses have these days, and how greed & corruption can flourish.

5 out of 5 stars Wickedly Entertaining, Shocking.......2007-06-20

This documentary on the collapse of "energy giant" Enron plays out like a gripping crime thriller. Fraud abounds and lies pile upon lies until a business that took decades to build comes crumbling down in a matter of weeks.

Writer/Director Alex Gibney provides a model of documentary filmmaking in this taught story of corporate greed. Using news footage and trial coverage, Gibney avoids the "talking heads" trap that hobbles most documentaries. There are talking heads in this film, the most prominent of which is Fortune senior editor Bethany McLean. As co-author of the book on which the movie is based, McClean offers fascinating analysis on the financial industry and the corporate stupidity that led to Enron's downfall.

But it's the film and sound footage that make this movie a must-see. To hear a flustered Jeffrey Skilling stumble through a non-explaination of Enron's finances and finally call his questioner an "a**hole" is hilarious; sound clips of Enron traders laughing gleefully while engineering California's rolling blackouts are nothing short of chilling.

We've been hearing about Enron now for six years, now. I never understood what exactly Enron did before seeing this film. Now I don't feel so ignorant, as this documentary makes clear that at times Enron didn't know what Enron did. One Enron trader puts it best in saying, "I had a lot of questions about what was going on, but I didn't ask them because I didn't want to know the answers."

Watch this movie and stay for the bonus material. As the Enron convictions continue to roll in half a decade after the fact, "The Smartest Guys in the Room" gives profound insight into the corruption and incompetence leading to the scandal.

1 out of 5 stars Long, Repetitive and Biased.......2007-06-10

The content of this documentary (?) could easily fit in a 30-minute piece. There is an attempt to sensationalize things. For instance, they make a big fuss about the trips made by top execs to Baja, making a tenuous connection to the risk-taking culture at Enron. There is practically nothing of substance. For instance, one would like to know more details about the actual shady dealings that Enron went through, rather than a depiction of trading room banter. Very shallow.

3 out of 5 stars Works on computer only.......2007-05-29

Watch out, this one only runs on a computer & that wasn't made obvious in the description. That's what WMVHD means. If you want the DVD which plays on a regular DVD player, buy the 1-disc set which is actually a valuable one to have. It's a very good story, very enlightening & informative.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-28

Just can't stop watching this movie again and again. I'll recommend it to anyone.

    Description

Social satire based on the best-seller by Adele Lang humorously chronicles the life of Katya Livingston, a self-centered, obnoxious and conceited 28-year-old ad sales exec who won't let anything or anyone stand in her way in getting to the top of the San Francisco social ladder. When tax inspectors quesiton her claims Katya is forced to keep a financial diary and finds time to add details about her friends, enemies and lovers all from her unique point of view.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars In Spite of the Gorgeous Star Jennifer Love Hewitt, This Is Yet Another Cliched Comedy.......2007-05-07

Jennifer Love Hewitt is the star of this not-so-funny made-for-TV romantic comedy "Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber," which is based on the book of the same title by Adele Lang. In spite of the intriguing title, the film mainly relies on the clichéd ideas about fame, money, love and office workers' life in San Francisco, and doesn't have anything new to tell. Worse, the film doesn't even know in what way we should look at this anti-heroine Katya Livingstone, 28, whose only purpose of life seems climbing up the social ladder.

Are we supposed to side (or laugh) with Katya, who never hesitates to use her co-workers and ex-boy friends to get what she wants? It is pretty demanding for anyone to identify with this very annoying social climber, who seems to need only two things in her life: invitation to the biggest party of the year and the hunky Mr. Right who is on the fourth floor of her company's building. But I don't see any social satire or anything funny about seeing Jennifer Love Hewitt's character donating some money for an African orphan, or giving useless financial advice to the boy. At least, the flat and tasteless direction of this film, where our silly heroine kills animals (twice) her boss keeps by doing supposedly `humorous' things, is not clearly up to the task of making social commetaries or providing us with really funny moments.

If we are supposed to hate and despise her, it would be a much easier task. I know obviously this is not the filmmakers' intention, and as the original book was written in the style of a diary (like Bridget Jones), Katya's unlikable traits should not be taken as face value. I know as much, and Ms. Hewitt almost managed to pull off the impossible, being nasty and lovable at the same time, but like Lindsay Lohan and her recent flop "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen," equally irritating comedy drama, most viewers just stop being interested, and perhaps say, "Why should we care?" And I could find not many reasons.

5 out of 5 stars A funny movie with a hot and sexy star!!!.......2006-12-26

Jennifer is AWESOME in this flick!! Don't listen to the fuddy duddys below. Not only is she extremely beautiful but the movie is a howl! It's fun to watch and great for eye candy!

4 out of 5 stars Cute, funny little movie.......2006-12-25

Light, entertaining comedy of errors. Definitely doesn't take itself too seriously. Amusing reflection on modern values.

Colin Ferguson was good as the down-to-earth counter balance to Jennifer Love Hewitt nutcase.

    5 out of 5 stars Fun Comedy.......2006-11-06

People are bashing this movie like it was made to win an Oscar. It's a fun light comedy. It's one of those feel good movies not to be taken seriously. It was cute! Jennifer Love Hewitt was soooo pretty in this movie and her clothes were cute too. Joey Lawrence was also funny. This movie also had a really good soundtrack. It's aimed towards 20-30 something year olds. I recorded it to DVD when it was on Oxygen and loved it so much decided to buy it. Best Buy has it for $8.99. Overall, this is a fun movie.

2 out of 5 stars Jennifer Love Hewitt Lays Another Bomb.......2006-10-02

The thing about this film that I eventually had to come to terms with is that it is not an examination of the disconnect between San Francisco socialites and Africa orphans. The fact that the orphans showed up at all lead me to believe that the filmmakers realize that they truly do exist, even if the characters do not. Rather this film is a case study in everything that is wrong with female entertainment in 2006. Beyond the fact that it is shallow to pine over characters pining over expensive merchandise, there is an overriding theory here and elsewhere that you too can be insufferable and still get the hunk so long as you are beautiful. Jennifer Love Hewitt shows up here working the blow up doll look to provide us with a repugnant role model. For the vast majority of the film we watch her obsess over the most vapid things imaginable: social gatherings, weight loss, white teeth, and career advancement. And the problem is that girls out there are blissfully sucking this garbage up not knowing that they are being indoctrinated into the chick lit mindset.

The message of the film is really the least of its worries. Its values are really no worse than what you would find on "Entourage," a show I love. Of course "Entourage" has a few advantages, namely real characters, real emotions, real humor, and real scripts. Hewitt, who clearly has some sort of phobia of serious work, continues her downward spiral towards obscurity. Here she is picking up a paycheck for looking great and over acting. The director also appears to hate subtlety of any kind. The writer's idea of a running gag involves some chump who works everywhere Katya (Hewitt) goes. And after "Empire Falls" last year I never again want to hear the excuse that the film sucks because it is made for TV. Sorry slackers, the bar has been raised. There is a little empty pleasure to be gleaned and there are two legitimate chuckles, but that is all. To call this a cheese fest would be an insult to cheese.

Since there really are people like Katya in the world we can't say that there is no justifiable reason for this film. It's not Katya's fault that she was born minus brain cells and her type could be just as interesting as any other type. But thanks to everybody involved in this disaster there is just nothing interesting to be found. It does, however, land another blow to the conventional wisdom that says that ambition leads to wealth. We are asked to believe that this girl pulls in a six figure income even though we never see her working (even though we do see her at work). Then we are asked to believe that she got that far simply by being a very ambitious liar. That way we can believe that she "earned" her money as opposed to facing the truth which is that ambition leads to hurt feelings and rich parents lead to wealth. As long as we believe that we can ignore the stated message of this film (don't be a sociopath), and instead focus on the real one: Be rich, be beautiful, be a socialite. In other words, believe that Paris Hilton has ambition. **

1 out of 5 stars Pale reflection of the 1932 Original.......2006-09-23

I saw this movie on T.V. a few years ago, and since then I have bought the original Tarzan MGM movies. This version is a pale reflection of the 1932 film. There is no smouldering chemistry between Bo Derek and Miles O'Keeffe. Her character moves from being an overly confident heiress to a bumbling, blushing little schoolgirl who is in a tizzy over Tarzan's "Innocent/Natural/Virgin" state. Her father, James Parker (Richard Harris) is portrayed as an outspoken, vulgar, sex crazed expatriate obsessed with the elephants' graveyard and any female he can find. O'Keeffe's gives a "wooden" performance as Tarzan.Three Chimpanzees and a lone Orangutan follows the "Lord of the Apes". If you are looking for a great performance by legends in the business, check out the b/w originals which for all their flaws, have lasted for decades. If you just want to gape at Bo Derek half naked, this is the movie for you.

1 out of 5 stars One Of The Worst Movies Ever Made!.......2006-03-18

This is one of the worst movies ever! It seems to just have been an excuse for the actress and her director husband to show off her naked body!

3 out of 5 stars A Bo Derek Vanity Piece.......2006-03-02

This, like Bolero, is another "vehicle" movie directed by Bo's husband, John Derek, to display his trophy wife's--talents. Mind you, I loved the Bo-naked scenes: she's real pretty. But the rest, with Richard Harris' "sawing the air" performance, left much to be desired. 3 stars for Bo's bod.

3 out of 5 stars Bo Derek is all wet.......2005-06-13

Directed by John Derek, now I wonder how Bo got the part. Does not matter how she got there it is fun to watch her get wet every time you turn around. She was wet in "10" (1979) but here she is all wet.

This is a simple adaptation of the Tarzan story where Jane joins her father (Richard Harris) in an expedition. He tells here of the Tarzan legend. She wanders off. During her wet period Tarzan (Miles O'Keeffe) appears on the scene and plucks her. Bo sort of monkeys around. And Tarzan gets snaked. Daddy gets stuck and we all live happily ever after? Or do we?

EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECT FROM A MANTAN MORELAND MOVIE. ENTERTAINING ENOUGH BUT NOT GREAT. BUT I AM A MANTAN FAN SO----

    2 out of 5 stars Jungle Bungle.......2004-11-15

There's a time-tested rule of thumb around my household: no movie that begins with scenes of stock footage ever turns out to be any good. Another rule is that no movie that begins with the credit "Directed by Jean Yarbrough" is any good. Well, LAW OF THE JUNGLE is proof of both.

After a few opening minutes of grainy film of hairy critters clinging to trees, we meet Nona Brooks (Arline Judge), a rather plump singer who's stranded in the African port of Duakwa, a place so remote that the local newspaper advertises "Latest war news - only two months old." She's hoping a handsome American paleontologist (John "Dusty" King) can get her back to Brooklyn, but he's only interested in digging up some old bones with his assistant, Jefferson Jones (who must be and is Mantan Moreland). Arthur O'Connell is Ms. Judge's creepy boss, and he is so terrible in this picture, you wonder that he ever had a career at all after it. For some reason, he decides to emulate Peter Lorre, and it's just awful. When he finally gets killed, I was so happy I almost felt like I was watching a good movie, the way your feet feel really good when you finally take off a pair of ill-fitting shoes.

Anyway, everybody's roaming around through the back-lot jungle, including a couple of Nazi spies who are after the girl for reasons you won't care about. Mantan teaches the grunting African tribesman how to shoot craps, a gorilla attacks our band of hardy explorers, a tribe of cannibals captures the stars of the picture, and who really cares? Jeff refers to his boss as a "Paleon.... Paleon.... You know, a digger-upper." He also asks the tribesmen, "What is you ignorant Africans doing up at dis time o' night?" He has some good moments with Laurence Criner as "Chief Mojobo", an Oxford-educated African, but they come late in the picture and you'll be asleep.

Going into a Monogram film, the audience always has low expectations. So when the finished product doesn't live up to even those non-lofty aspirations, you know there's a problem. The film is dull when Mantan isn't onscreen, and fairly lackluster anyway when he is. John King, who was so good as ACE DRUMMOND a few years earlier, clearly is bored to tears by this stinker and walks through the part, not helping matters. And as for Arline Judge, well, early on she gets to warble a tune called "Jungle Moon" and it's so bad that the audience bursts into applause only a couple of lines into the song, prematurely ending the ditty. Would that they had done the same to this film.
