Does it get any better than this? Canadian torch singer and pianist Diana Krall is in perfect form in this two-hour Paris concert, recorded in December 2001 shortly after the release of her CD The Look of Love. In her band, guitarist Anthony Wilson and bassist John Clayton get the lion's share of attention, but the entire ensemble (including lush strings from the Paris Symphony Orchestra) provides flawless support for Krall, whose skill on a Steinway is as impressive as her smoky interpretations of vintage standards and ballads. Inspired by guest conductor-arranger Claus Ogerman, Krall can surprise with subtleties (like a delicious hint of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" in her closing of "All or Nothing"), or glide into solos with a master's flair. Matching the music beat for beat, the camera coverage and editing are intimate without being obtrusive, making this a bit of jazz heaven here on earth. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Recorded live at the Paris Olympia on December 1, 2001, Krall's classic style blends equal parts artistic vision, hard work and determination. The British Columbia native began playing piano at the age of four and now has five stunning albums behind her. She made her debut with the critically acclaimed Only Trust Your Heart and the album topped the Billboard jazz charts for the most of 1998, earning Krall a Grammy nomination. She went on to win a Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy for 1999's platinum-selling When I Look in Your Eyes and became the first jazz artist in 25 years to be nominated in the Album of the Year category.

We bought this for my grandfather for Christmas since he's a big DK fan, but the whole family watched and loved it. She's such a talented artist and has an incredible voice!

5 out of 5 stars Krall-Live in Paris is the Next Best Thing to Being There...maybe better!!.......2007-01-15

Diana Krall is truly amazing...one of the best Jazz Pianists I know of and a voice & style that is unique in all the World. This is her first live concert recording from Grammy winning Diana Krall, recorded at the Paris Olympia Theatre winter 2002. The concert is classic, with 90 minutes of the best of Diana's mastery of keyboard with her mainstay Quartet- Anthony Wilson (guitar); John Clayton,(bass); and Jeff Hamilton (percussion) enhanced by guests John Pisano, and Paulinho Da Costa. Of all the Krall albums...this DVD counterpart of the CD...with 17 songs (4 more than the CD release) is a "must have". With intimate video angle shots..you will feel you know Diana and the team at the end of the concert!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Combination of Krall At Her Best!.......2007-01-11

Even if you're "on the edge" when it comes to liking Diana Krall, you need to add this DVD to your collection. Everything from the material, to the guys in her group, to the Paris orchestra, to Al Schmidt's great recording prowess, to the unobvious video capture...it's all here.

Perfect for your big screen and big sound system...and it swings!

Iron Maiden's 1982 breakthrough, The Number of the Beast--its first with leather-lunged vocalist Bruce Dickinson--remains a heavy-metal watershed, and this Classic Albums program reunites the major players (including producer Martin Birch) for the undoubted pleasure of longtime Maiden fans. The interviews with band members and rock journalists in the 50-minute program touch on Maiden's early career, then delve into the creation of songs that have become hard-rock classics: the title song came about from a nightmare that bassist-songwriter Steve Harris couldn't shake, "The Prisoner" was inspired by the Patrick McGoohan television series, and the hit "Run to the Hills" made the sort of political statement (about white men's savage treatment of native peoples) that then-Capitol Records exec Don Zimmermann notes most American fans couldn't have cared less about while head-banging. --Kevin Filipski

Description

THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST was Iron Maiden's greatest achievement, and, accordingly it brought them their greatest popularity and notoriety. Revered by metal fans for their focus on music and reviled by critics for their supposed "satanist" leanings, this record represents the seminal British metal band at their peak. Featuring a track-by-track examination of the record's original playlist led by album producer Martin Birch, as well as interviews with rock journalists that put accusations made against the band in perspective, this episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series offers an inside look at one of the best and most notorious metal albums of the 1980s.

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD.......2005-09-22

Good DVD, but mostly for die hard Maiden fans. Could be a VH1 Behind the Music type (without the drama) doc you see on cable, but since it isn't if you want to see it, buy this vid. I've watched it once and feel smarter for it...but haven't watched it over and over. TNOTB is one of my favs so I had to get it.

2 out of 5 stars ATTENTION: MUSICIANS/ENGINEERS.......2005-01-06

About 90% of these reviews are misleading! I was looking for an insight to a classic album especially when I saw Martin Birch (a God!) was involved. But Birch only soloed a couple of tracks in one or two songs and did nothing else! It started off cool with Martin and Bruce talking about how Bruce had to do take after take of the opening to number of the beast but the insight stops there. The interviews are nice(thank-you for the subtitles!-friggin brits!) but it's really a video on Iron Maiden and how this album achieved such great success for the band. If you wanna see a producer AND the band explain an album, buy Judas Priest's classic dvd on British Steel-thanks to Tom Allom. Get the "History of Iron Maiden-Part 1" instead of this dvd!!

1 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2004-01-08

This DVD is a documentary on the making of the album. It was highly disappointing to be teased with a few seconds of the music videos followed by endless boring commentary. There is very little concert footage from the 82 show, nearly all is from the most recent concert. If you are a die hard fan from the early 80's and are wanting to watch awesome concert footage, this is not the DVD for you!!!!!!! If you want to see the videos from this album, this is not the DVD you want!!!!!! If you enjoy endless commentary, I guess you'll love this DVD!!!!!! We are very, very disappointed with the sneaky way the description reads, it implies what we hoped to get but uses language that they can claim is accurate in a subtle way. What scumbags!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Insight into a Great Album.......2003-07-10

Being a huge Iron Maiden fan, I decided that since I didn't have enough money to purchase the ROCK IN RIO DVD, I would go ahead and buy the cheaper Maiden DVD which was a 50-minute documentary on the making of their all-time classic third album THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST. It was part of a music series called "Classic Albums" and I thought it would be cool to see how this heavy metal milestone came into place back in the early '80s. This is a very insightful DVD, filled with great interviews, never-before-seen concert footage, some cool bonus material, and a rich, detailed history to boot. I look at NUMBER OF THE BEAST now in a new light than ever before.

The program traces Maiden's beginnings in the late '70s up to their breakout success with BEAST in 1982. We see early concert footage in the clubs with original lead singer Paul Di'anno, decked out in leather-clad gear; how Maiden became one of the "leaders" of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (and how they detested it); Paul's exit from the band and Bruce's arrival after leaving his own band Samson; incredible commentary on the writing and recording process of the album; and the lasting impact the album has had.

As much as I loved the insight and detail, what really impressed me about the interviews was the humor. For example, during the segment for "The Prisoner," it cuts to the set of the "village" where the original Prisoner TV show was filmed, and there you see Bruce decked out in the same outfit Patrick McGoohan wore on the show. Other funny bits occur when the band and their manager Rod Smallwood discuss the backlash NUMBER OF THE BEAST received in America. Bruce says that one guy went so far as to carry a huge 25-foot cross (the same cross Jesus carried, you see) as a means of protest in front of the venue. Smallwood then talks about how people started burning copies of the album, and then decided to smash them instead with hammers because "the fumes of the Devil's music" would poison the atmosphere. Hilarious stuff.

The bonus materials are also very good. We see extra, equally detailed interviews that were cut out of the final program; two shots of Adrian Smith playing the riffs for "Children of the Damned" and "The Number of the Beast"; a poignant message from Clive Burr thanking the fans for their support with his struggle with MS; and the performance of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" from the Rock in Rio concert (that was the best).

Overall, this is a well-made, interesting, and humorous short little portrait into the world of Iron Maiden. This is a dedication to one of heavy metal's finest.

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool Documentary.......2003-07-03

Amazing collection of interviews with the band members who recorded the "Beast" album. Including Clive Burr, who has been in the shadows for the last couple of decades.

Funny moments, very interesting insights on how the songs came up, and a lot of cool curiosities about the band and the Beast tour.

Adrian playing "The Number of The Beast", "Children of Damned", is awesome!

The making and continued influence of Metallica's commercial breakthrough (known simply as "the Black Album") is entertainingly recounted in this must for Metallica fanatics, especially those who are interested in the recording of one of hard rock's most sonically breathtaking albums. Drummer Lars Ulrich, singer James Hetfield, and producer Bob Rock take up the lion's share of the interviews, and their reminiscences a decade after the fact include many juicy tidbits (like Ulrich and Rock loathing each other by the time the recording was finished, or that the final mix was nearly ruined by a digital clicking sound on the master tape--luckily, a successful remastering was done). The Dolby 2.0 Stereo sound is appropriately pummeling, even if we are treated to mere excerpts from the songs, videos, and even some of the original demos. Classic Albums: Metallica adroitly summarizes a pivotal moment in hard rock history. --Kevin Filipski

Description

The story of the making of this remarkable album is told here via exclusive interviews with band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted, archive footage and performance, and contributions from producer Bob Rock. We revisit the original multi-tracks of the album, as well as listen to previously unheard demo recordings.

Featuring the five singles from the album, Enter Sandman, Sad But True, "The Unforgiven", "Wherever I May Roam" and "Nothing Else Matters", this is the compelling story of one of the biggest selling albums of all time, a true Classic Album.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Music DVDS On The Market.......2004-11-01

Metallica's self-titled DVD on one of their albums, which is known as "The Black Album"( album is actually self-titled, but because the front and back of the album is all black, it earned it's reputation as "The Black Album")is one of the best music DVDS on the market. This DVD goes behind the scenes into the making of the album; there are interviews with band members James Hetfield, Jason Newsted, Kirk Hammet, Lars Ulrich, and producer Bob Rock. You get to listen to previously unheard demo recordings, and the five singles off of "The Black Album" are on this DVD: "Enter Sandman", "Holier Than Thou", "Sad But True", "The Unforgiven", and "Nothing Else Matters". I also enjoyed the exteneded interviews for the DVD, and it was very interesting when James Hetfield told the behind the scenes stories for when he wrote "Nothing Else Matters" and "The God That Failed". Hetfield also talked about how he and the band members in Metallica faced difficulties in their childhoods( parents getting divorced, family members dying)and how music was what guided them through all the tough times in their childhoods. If you enjoyed "The Black Album", you definitely don't want to miss the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars The making of a great album.......2004-04-14

I actually got this dvd for my birthday, and i wasnt really sure if it would be good coz i'm not a huge fan of documenteries, but i gotta say i was not disappointed with it.
Although i would've liked to see maybe more of the video clips for the singles instead of just little clips from them it was interesting hearing them talk about songwriting and how they wrote the album etc.
It's also their 1st album with producer Bob Rock and he has some interesting things to say.
Some highlights are Kirk's solo on wherever i may roam, watching them at the mixing boards playing around with the sound and hearing all the seperate guitar parts, and all the little clips of their live shows. It also explains what inspired the S&M concert.
If you're a die-hard Metallica fan or interested in songwriting and good music, then i reccomend this dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Decent DVD.......2003-06-06

I watched this at a friends and will probably eventually buy it but I have a few other Metallica videos I want to replace with DVD first.

First off, this DVD doesn't get ratings for the videos from the Black Album, it's a documentary...if you want music videos or sessions, buy A Year and A Half... There's no comparison between the two. ;) If it contained most of the same material, I think that would be a bigger waste of money.

This installment of the Classic Albums series looks at the making of Lou Reed's seminal glam-rock solo album, Transformer, featuring a relaxed Reed (though decidedly less glam than he was in '72) looking like he's having the time of his life as he reminisces and isolates separate tracks to illustrate how the album came together. Bassist Herbie Flowers demonstrates how he recorded the swingy, impossibly catchy bass riff in "Walk on the Wild Side," and coproducer David Bowie makes a brief appearance, as do many of Reed's contemporaries and fellow musicians. Many express delight that the tracks sound as fresh as they did when they were recorded, especially "Vicious" and "Perfect Day." DVD bonus interviews include a fascinating tale from Reed on how he first met Andy Warhol--while he and the Velvet Underground were playing in a seedy Village café, being attacked by drunken sailors offended by one of their songs. --Anne Hurley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2005-03-18

Very informative and enjoyable piece. Made me enjoy the album even more, given the fresh insights from the players. Neat bits with Herbie Flowers (bass), Ken Scott (engineer), and others, including Lou, of course. Reed seemed quite human, approachable, and humble. Only brief snippets of interviews with Bowie. A special treat was the chance to see some brief interview clips with Mick Ronson and to hear Lou talk about him. I want an entire DVD of Mick!

Well worth a watch or three.

4 out of 5 stars A velvet goldmine of glam must-own!!.......2002-02-17

I tip my hat again and again to the makers of the Classic Albums series for including Transformer, a seminal album in the career of Lou Reed and of the glam rock genre. As in the other titles of this series, you are treated to interviews with the session musicians, producers, and engineers who took part in making the record, as well as rock critics who, as always, are more than happy to interpret another's intentions.
The true highlight of this DVD is the input of Reed himself, who seems to be completely enjoying himself, talking about the making of the album, sitting at the mixing board isolating various tracks, and playing some of the tunes solo. His dry wit will break you up, guaranteed. On top of this, there is plenty of concert footage from the early seventies, although sadly with no audio. Bowie fans should also take note that there is some very rare Ziggy Stardust footage here, but unfortunately the only Bowie interview clips to be found are few and far between, taken from the PBS biography of Reed produced five years ago. But this is a small gripe. If you have any interest in Reed you should see this.\
Now.. If they would only do Ziggy Stardust....

D.W. Griffith's masterpiece encompasses four stories (the modern era, Jerusalem, 1572 Paris, and Babylon), tackling both time and geography. Boasting a cast of thousands, gargantuan sets, chariot races, the crucifixion, death defying stunts, and the fall of Babylon, Intolerance truly gives meaning to the words, "epic cinema." There can be no complete collection of silent cinema without this celluloid masterpiece. DUAL LAYER DISC Includes collectible poster

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still stands as one of the best films ever made........2005-06-13

Intolerance is one of those rare films that stretched the boundaries of the medium of film. It is a sweeping epic that contains four stories each tragic each highlighting the intolerance man has for his brothers through out the ages. Although a long movie (3hours) we find ourselves totally immersed in it and mesmerized by it. It is not just a movie but an experience.

Its themes are as relevant today as they were then as among other topics it tackles it shows how people mistrust each other because of superficial things such as difference in race and in religion and how we carelessly blunder into war. And in the end how the character flaws of just one individual can bring the collapse of an entire civilization.

The sets of the movie were massive and unheard of in their day. When the movie was made it was made on a closed set and much secrecy surrounded the project but people could not ignore the set of Babylon as it began to rise over Los Angeles.

The film is not perfect as some of the performances in the epic vary in quality the sets and story lines astound and it still stands as one of the most ambitious movies ever made and sets the bar for the film epic.

A handful of separate stories are joined by the repeating image of Lillian Gish rocking a cradle. It is a symbol of nurturing a mother and the hope that comes with each new generation. It is a symbol of the passage of time with the endless parade of carnage through out history contrasted with the fact that we all come into the world in the same way. It is a very moving and powerful image.

The story of the intolerance of man is told through a handful of stories - the fall of Babylon, the crucifixion of Jesus, the persecution of the Huegenots and the (then) present day meddling of well meaning social workers.

Although Griffith hammers away at the theme of intolerance and its destructive consequences the last story to conclude involves a man falsely convicted, and is now about to be executed and whose life literally hangs by a thread (or rather several, though an apparatus where a group of men each cut away at a string not knowing which one will trip the door to the gallows) and is at the last minute (after a frantic car race to the warden) spared. In this way Griffith offers the viewer a glimmer of hope that the cycle of intolerance will someday be broken.

One wonders if the subject matter and title has something to do with the reaction D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation " received. This movie plainly shows Griffith's stance on the evils of racism.

One cannot help but think that the movie is making a political statement as well as during the time of the movie's release W.W. I was raging in Europe.

A great spectacle as well as a thoughtful meditation.

In my book it is one of the top fifty films of all time.

Highly recommended,

Jim Connell "Hallstatt Prince"

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Film That Never Fails To Amaze.......2004-03-13

I have long been a great admirer of this wonderful film, and am always interested in the latest VHS or DVD editions that are made available. The print quality on this Delta release is surprisingly good, making it an excellent value for the curious collector desiring an introduction to D. W. Griffith's 1916 cinema masterpiece. There are several different edited versions of Intolerance that have been produced over the last few years for video, each slightly unique in terms of editing and emissions/additions of key scenes. This Delta DVD version is no exception, with some interesting fadeouts to a couple of scenes that, in some prints, cut abruptly to the next shot. The music that accompanies the film sounds as if it was pieced together from pre-recorded sources, but it works well enough and it's apparent some real effort was used to match the music to the mood of the images. As to the film itself, Intolerance is a brilliant and powerful milestone in the history of cinema. D. W. Griffith wove four separate stories together, each from a different period of history, to illustrate the theme of man's inhumanity to man. The results were certainly startling to 1916 audiences, and no less impressive today. Superb performances abound in all four stories, most notably Mae Marsh and Robert Harron in the Modern Story, Constance Talmadge and Elmer Clifton in the Babylonian Story, Howard Gaye in the Nazarene Story, and Margery Wilson, Eugene Pallette and Josephine Crowell in the French Story. The beautiful repeated shot of Lillian Gish as the Woman Who Rocks The Cradle, a device linking the individual stories, has become an enduring icon of the Silent Cinema. And of course, the magnificent sets of Ancient Babylon are among the most wonderful ever created for a moving picture. My recommendation to first-time viewers of Intolerance would be to try this version out, and then pursue the newly restored Kino version for a more definitive print. The cover art for Delta's release is also interesting, using vintage advertising art for the film that focuses on a crucial scene for Mae Marsh in the Modern Story. All in all, a very decent job in bringing a landmark film to the home screen.

"It was like the world went from black & white to Technicolor," says Keith Richards of the emergence of Elvis Presley in the mid-'50s, and this look at the King's first official album (the legendary Sun Sessions weren't issued in album form until well after the fact) backs up that claim. The one-hour program (plus 40 minutes of bonus interview material on the DVD) combines performance footage (the early TV shows are not to be missed), photos, and more to limn Presley's early days, when he combined country, blues, and R&B to forge a unique, galvanizing style. Sun producer Sam Phillips, author Peter Guralnick, Presley's musicians, and others are on hand to provide insight and background. But in the end, of course, it comes down to the music--and when you're talking about the likes of "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," "Money Honey," and "Heartbreak Hotel" (a single that actually wasn't on the album), "classic" hardly begins to cover it. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Without this dvd you cannot understand contemporary white music.......2005-10-05

A smashing dvd with excellent material in the special features. It pays off having engaged respectable and sensitive connoisseurs of Presley's history, music interests and his way of working. The documentary gives us an idea of the artist and musician behind the image of the Vegas-ridden `myth Elvis' that has sustained until today. Not only that it helps to understand why and to what extend Presley was in charge of his first album. It also shows that it needs a shocker to create something new and a talent to keep it alive. The overall accent is perfectly placed: without this dvd you cannot understand contemporary white music.

5 out of 5 stars The bopping hillbilly.......2003-11-30

This is a truly great dvd for those interested in how Presley recorded that classic early sound and more specifically his epic first R.C.A album (which The Clash later paid homage to by copying the lettering for their most revered masterpiece, London Calling)and the effect that these recordings had on so many.It also gives us a view of the hurricane that Elvis created when he exploded on the scene. What is refreshing are interviews from other famous musicians and music aficionadas like Keith Richards and Peter Guaralnick(author of Last train to Memphis) as opposed to "those who were close to him" which are often very subjective. There is also some rare footage of Elvis in concert in 1954.

4 out of 5 stars The Later Edition "Classic"........2002-03-18

Maybe somewhere along the way they filmed somebody explaining to the viewer that they are *apparently* discussing the *reissue* of Elvis Presley's first album - it contained five additional songs. With that explanation, the viewer used to the original twelve track edition isn't confused. Whatever hit the editing room floor, the results are still top notch: the interviews are expertly conducted and provide fascinating details for diehards and casual fans.
Ofcourse many have wondered why the first album for RCA's biggest star would contain leftovers from his C & W past, in fact, cuts which on their own could not have supported Presley's global success. Unfortunately, this tape does not really address that question, the answer to which is rather obvious - before Rock and Roll, albums were not, as in later decades, the primary money makers for the company, so perhaps it was felt that if a teenager could afford the album and the single (and the Extended Play?) then the tentative Country ballad "I Love You Because and the innocuous uptempo "Just Because" would loom as worth-hearing but not essential material. To put it simply, hit singles (i.e. "Heartbreak Hotel") and contemporaneous hit albums ("Elvis Presley") were essentially two separate entities.
There are some amazing segments here, most notably *previously unreleased* 1956 television footage and recording studio outtakes on "Shake, Rattle, and Roll". The tape closes with a rare 1956 narrative beautifully delivered by the star.
One "missing" piece: a reported audio interview with Elvis conducted in New York around 04-56 in which he is asked if he actually likes his first album and he responds that he is pleased with about half of it and thinks "One-Sided Love Affair" is a standout.

This installment of the Classic Albums series, in which rock stars talk about the creation of their albums, focuses on the making of British Steel, the 1980 album by Judas Priest, a working-class British, heavy-metal band led by screechy lead singer Rob Halford. As Halford (who has since left the band) and his mates explain what went into the lyrics and recording of the songs that made up the record, the talking heads are intercut with performance footage of a band that helped launch the metal and speed-metal surge of the 1980s and early 1990s. The interviews are not particularly insightful if you're not a fan and are probably redundant if you are; it's fascinating, however, to watch the way the band's studded-leather image evolved over the years. --Marshall Fine

Description

Had Judas Priest released just this one album, it would still go down in history. Judas Priest was one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 70's.

BRITISH STEEL made them a world-famous band.

The welding of BRITISH STEEL is told in this exclusive program in the band's own words, and by their once long-term producer Tom Allom. Featuring archive footage, interviews and rare live performances, plus all of BRITISH STEEL'S finest songs, including "Living After Midnight", "Breaking the Law", "Metal Gods", "The Rage", "United" and "Grinder", this is a compelling, witty and exhilarating look at the making of one of heavy metal's most artful creations, a true Classic Album.

Watch, listen and kneel to the Metal Gods!

5 out of 5 stars great bio of British Steel.......2005-11-14

All band membors give all their secrets about one of the greatest heavy mnetal albums ever made "British Steel" very interesting stories, and interviews from the band, lots of cool clips, and a few videos and a rare 1991 performance of Grinder, a great buy!

2 out of 5 stars British Steel.......2005-08-19

OK if you are a die hard Priest fan. All the dialog is a bit boring. It moves a little too slow for me. The music was good though.

4 out of 5 stars Love Judas Priest but a few things..........2004-12-19

I feel I have to ask this, how many freaken interviews are they going to do about British Steel/Point of Entry with parts of old videos, saddly some from Fule for Life not saying Fule for Life wasnt good, it was great, however if I wanted to see Fule for Life Id freaken Watch Fule For Life but appareantly they assume your to stupid to notice and may miss it so they RE-add many clips from Fule for Life because they assume you dont have Fule for Life...

See a pattern?

What kills Me is they obviously have some vintage material that is extreamly old and in great condition, viewing and sound wise, yet they show you like 10 seconds then ... go back to an interview :)

I wish Judas Priest would stop going over kill with interviews and just release there vintage material, Im talking even back to Sad Wings as about 10 seconds of Tyrant was played... then cuts OFF!?!?!?! but... saved by what else? an interview :)

Priest needs to know their PAYING fans dont want interviews that take longer to hear then the length of creation of Priests existance on this earth, but I do give it 4 stars, because they were kind enough to grace the PAYING viewers with a whopping 10 seconds of a vintage classic :)

*try to*... Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The inside story of the world-shattering metal classic........2004-02-15

Yet another entry in the enjoyable Classic Albums series, the episode documenting the making of Judas Priest's classic 1980 album was one of the few that didn't get screened on NZ TV (ditto the Iron Maiden, Deep Purple & Tincannica ones).
If you purchase this expecting all nine album cuts played in their entirety; then your're going to be disappointed. What you get here is a brief history of the the band which won't be cover any new ground for people who've seen the "Metal Works" video. The DVD features interviews with Messrs Halford, Tipton, Downing and Hill; along with then-producer Tom Allom & Scott Travis taking over from the drummer from that period Dave Holland (who as we all know, has been in the news recently for all the wrong- and quite sickening- reasons).
The DVD features the amusing concept video for BREAKING THE LAW in which the band rob a bank with Glenn & K.K using their guitars as weapons, while Rob Halford does a warped variation on "The Twist" on the bank counter before bending some iron bars to steal some gold albums for BRITISH STEEL. Also included are the videos for LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT & UNITED; as well as anecdotes and breakdowns of each song (the only cut that isn't really covered in much detail is YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE OLD TO BE WISE- my least favourite track on the album).
We get to see Glenn & KK demonstrating their guitar duelling in the studio, Ian talking about his bass intro for THE RAGE- one of very few he got to play (apart from LOVE BITES from 1984s "Defenders Of The Faith", BLOOD STAINED & BURN IN HELL both from 1997's "Jugulator". I could be wrong there. I probably am. Heck, I'm Vidiot, not Einstein) & Priest fans get to hear the infamous story about how "LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT" was conceived for the millionth time.
I do have a one minor quibble: the DVD running time is posted as 110 minutes on the DVD slick, but the actual running time for the doco itself is a mere 50 minutes. Also unlike the Meat Loaf BAT OUT OF HELL & Fleetwood Mac RUMORS "Classic Album" DVDs there's no stories of sex & drugs excess- the closest we get to that is a tipsy Tipton laying down some of his solos in the studio after the band had come back from a few beers at the pub. (Been there, done that).
Extras include a discography and extended interviews, which run about half an hour, so we're still owed 20 minutes of material. Other than that, this is an entertaining look at the making of one of the most important hard rock/metal albums of the 80s. If you're a fan you'll want it in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Substance for Musicians.......2003-12-18

If only VH1 would get a clue and produce substantive documentaries like this that are actually about making music instead of celebrity-oriented fluff.

This is a retrospective documentary about the making of the British Steel album. Glenn, KK, Rob and Ian are all interviewed about the making of this metal classic. There are interesting stories from producer Tom Allom about how some of the effects were generated, demonstrations of how Glenn and KK work together to get their trademark sound, examples of some songwriting devices, explanations by Rob of the ideas behind the lyrics, and some input from Ian Hill whose perspective is often overlooked even though he has been there from day one. Dave Holland, the drummer at that time, was not included. There is an interview with Scott Travis, the current drummer, in the extras.

This DVD is great for musicians and serious fans who are interested in what goes on during a recording session and the creative process. You may be disappointed if you are looking for celebrity rock star soap opera. But there is always VH1 for that.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for Getting Sense of Two Outstanding Musicians in Creative Process.......2007-03-21

The Eye of the Eagle, a musical collaboration of Celtic Christian artists David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge based on the Rev. David Adam's book of the same name, was released as an album in late 1998. (I have reviewed the album elsewhere on Amazon.com.) Shortly afterward, a concert of the music was held at Norwich Cathedral in England. A British television special devoted to the concert then aired in 1999. Eventually, Dave Bainbridge's Open Sky label acquired the rights to the TV special, and this DVD was released in mid-2006.

This DVD's main feature is the TV special, although some reports suggest that it was reedited for the DVD. The concert includes 11 of the album's 12 tracks (although the last third of the final track was reserved for the encore, which is included as an extra feature here and was not in the original TV special). Since David Adam had a prior commitment, Bishop Martin Shaw provides the readings from Adam's and other texts. Concert footage is interspersed with interviews of all three Davids and imagery of Celtic Christian locales such as Lindisfarne and Glendalough.

The concert itself is very good, with the cathedral's atmosphere adding much to music that is more traditional and arguably even more "high church" than found in Fitzgerald's and Bainbridge's work with the band Iona. This is not rock music, so some Iona fans may be disappointed. It is most similar to the music on Fitzgerald's solo album Lux Aeterna.

There are a few negatives. The camera focuses on Fitzgerald so much that you would think that this were a solo concert rather than a Fitzgerald/Bainbridge collaboration. (To be fair, Bainbridge sits in shadows, and this may have impacted the director's decisions.) The concert -- or at least the video -- changes the order of the tracks from the albums. The new order is interesting and provides a different feel for the music; still, some flow and cohesion are lost in the rearrangement. It's also not clear why one of the tracks apparently was not played at the concert. Shaw's readings of the texts are good but are a bit too melodramatic; I prefer Adam's original readings. Finally, while the female vocalists and cathedral choir are wonderful and were indispensable on the album, too often their voices seem to get lost on this recording.

But this video, strangely, is not most valuable for the music. The music is outstanding, but if you really want to focus on that, go out and buy the CD. (I recommend buying the original version with Adam's readings, not the newer version without them.) No, the most valuable parts of this DVD for fans of Fitzgerald and Bainbridge are the lengthy interviews with the two musicians and Adam. They provide a window into the creative process that produced this extraordinary, wonderful music.

This DVD, then, will be most appreciated by those who already are familiar with The Eye of the Eagle CD. My recommendation is to buy that first and then, when you are ready, come and purchase this worthwhile video.

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMATOGRAPHY.......2005-10-07

This is actually the worst movie in the entire world. Every possible aspect of the film is brutally awful: sound, acting, special effects, plot (or lack thereof), dialogue etc. The majority of the film consists of the worst combat scenes ever filmed. It is supposed to take place in "Nam" (and combine the "brutal honesty of Platoon and the action of Rambo"), however the forests are all the furthest possible thing from tropical rainforests, with large open expanses and plenty of dry grass.

However, on a positive note, it is so bad that it is quite funny. So it's worth seeing for that reason, but just don't show it to a Vietnam vet.
