Whatever It Takes initially seems little more than another comedy with impossibly attractive teenagers trying to get into each other's pants. Ryan (Shane West) is a bit of a geek with eyes for the school sex bomb, Ashley (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), which induces cringing in his neighbor and best friend, Maggie (Marla Sokoloff), a cute intellectual girl. But popular jock Chris (James Franco) has his eye on Maggie, and he offers to help Ryan win Ashley if Ryan will help Chris woo Maggie. So begins a two-headed variation on Cyrano de Bergerac; Ryan composes soulful e-mails for Chris, and Chris advises Ryan to treat Ashley like dirt, which seems to be the only way to get her attention. At first, neither finds it easy to change their ways; Chris comes on too strong, and Ryan is too nervous to be a jerk. But as they start to succeed, Ryan begins to see Maggie in a new light and wonders if he's pursuing the right girl. Which could all be very standard and shallow, but as the story unfolds the movie examines staying true to yourself and finding self-worth in surprisingly trenchant and unpreachy ways. Which is not to say that Whatever It Takes is high-minded--everyone's excessively good-looking and prone to wearing tight or revealing clothing, and there's a subplot about a kid who aspires to achieve school immortality through a topnotch prank. But the movie offers more than you might expect, which sets it apart from many of the recent swarm of teen flicks. --Bret Fetzer

How low will they go to get the girls of their dreams?.......2004-06-19
This particular version of "Whatever It Takes" was hurt by the idea that it was a modern version of "Cyrano de Bergerac," the way "Ten Things I Hate About You" is an updated "Taming of the Shrew" and "Cruel Intentions" is a teenage version of "Dangerous Liaisons." However, while we do have a version of the famous balcony scene, there is a big difference in that this time around the scene is missing the pivotal irony that a man who is in love with a woman gives another man the words to woe her (although the scene is a pivotal moment in the film). So the "Cyrano" connection is a minor one, especially compared to Steve Martin's "Roxanne."
The situation is that Ryan Woodman (Shane West) has the hots for the school's reigning sex goddess, Ashley Grant (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). Ryan is a good kid who has the twin misfortunes of playing the accordion and having a mother (Julia Sweeney) who is the school nurse. Meanwhile, the campus bad boy jock, Chris Campbell (James Franco) wants to add good girl Maggie Carter (Marla Sokoloff) to his list of conquests. Ryan and Maggie are nextdoor neighbors whose bedroom balconies almost touch and who have been best friends almost since birth, while Chris happens to be Ashley's cousin. So Chris comes up with the great idea that he and Ryan can help each other get the girl that they want.
The only real problem with this story line is that Ryan falls way behind the audience in terms of realizing the truth about both Ashley and Maggie. The cinematic reference I flashed on during this film was actually "10." But if Ryan is slow on the uptake this "Whatever It Takes" gets redeemed because West and Sokoloff really do come across as nice kids and the pivotal scenes are the best in the film, which really saves it. The homage to the "Cyrano" balcony scene is probably the best in the film, the grand gesture required of Ryan turns out to be an elegantly simple example of public humiliation in the name of true love, and Maggie carries off a nice case of the requisite comeuppance. That is not bad for any sort of teen romantic comedy, even one with a title for which lots of people apparently like to write scripts.

First time directing?.......2000-02-21
The script sounds like a sixth grader with a foul mouth wrote it. Andrew Clay displays his lack of acting and humor over and over. There are so many useless pieces of information and dialogue it's almost if this were to be taken as a joke. The direction was probably non-existant as was any type of cinematography. I could have choreographed the action sequences better, as they were painfully slow and contrived.
I'll admit that only the best of the action genre movies appeal to me. If the fist fights and bad one-liners were to be the main focus of the movie and not the plot, I was doomed from the beginning.

As this madcap spoof reaches its midpoint, the plot careens as wildly as a runaway grocery cart on Lombard Street in San Francisco. As they execute Lord Ilpalazzo's plans, Excel and Hyatt/Hatchan are assisted by two androids, both named Ropponnatsu. One is a parody of the cutesy cat-girls in many anime series; the other spoofs cyber-babes like Steel Angel Kurumi. Hatchan dies in almost every episode, leaving Excel to pick up the pieces. Episode 17 satirizes the animation process and anime art collectors, with Hatchan noting that no one does animation on cels anymore. A series of mini-parodies follows that includes send-ups of Sailor Moon, Rocky, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It doesn't make much sense or advance Lord Ilpalazzo's plans, but Excel fans aren't like to care. (Rated 17 and older: violence, profanity, brief nudity, risqué and gross-out humor) --Charles SolomonDescription
Yes, the producers of the most demented anime ever produced are getting desperate, so in order to keep up the ratings, Excel and Hyatt find themselves facing new, Highly Merchandisable Characters, gimmick episodes and even SEXUAL JEOPARDY (I'll take "lesbian android overtures for $100, Alex!") It's all in the service of Ilpalazzo and ACROSS as our favorite set of social misfits once again plunges into the breach as the plot sickens... er, thickens... in the fourth incredibly bizarre volume of Excel Saga!Customer Reviews:

Better, but get 5.......2003-03-09
Different route, but still pretty hilarious........2003-02-09
Episode 14: The J.C. Staff is stumped on what should be done for the next half of Excel Saga, so they introduce Ropponmatsu, an android working for Kabupu and developed by a scientist with a fetish for young children.
Parodies: Excel Saga producers, Intel Celeron processor, Powerepuff Girls.
Episode 15: The J.C. Staff is in another pickles since they made way too much merchandise on Ropponmatsu after she was destroyed. So they rewrite her back into the show with the inclusion of Ropponmatsu 2.
Parodies: Astro Boy, Nintento, Summer of Youth.
Episode 16: The Ropponmatsus are rewritten back into the show AGAIN! This time, both of them form a romantic relationship with Excel and Hyatt.
Parodies: Speed Racer, Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Zambot 3, Space Battleship Yamato.
Episode 17: Excel and Hyatt are sent to observe America and wind up in some odd situations involving the mafia and Sandora. So many paroides in this episode!
Parodies: Puni Puni Poemi, DiGi Charrot, Rocky, Sailor Moon, Wonder Woman, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney World, Naussica, Planet of the Apes, Dune.
These episodes had a different flow to them, but they did work for me. I was very curious as to how ADV would dub Episode 17 since there were some English-dialogue jokes in it, but they succeeded with a mix of ghetto and Spanish slang. They even made a joke about Sailor Moon being dubbed in Canada. I really thought this episode was going to descriminate against American animation, but, to some degree, it's really not bashed so much in this episode. After all, Excel does shout "VIVA ANIMATION" referring to all animation.
The extras on this disc are different from the past volumes, but they were actually cool to look at. There is an interview with the main voice actress for Puni Puni, as well as some comparison videos on the opening sequence. And for those who can't wait for Puni Puni Poemi, there is a small trailer for it on the disc. The special insert this time is a make-a-face cut out game.
Overall, if you liked the series thus far and will love it no matter what, by all means pick up this volume. Episode 17 is more than enough reason to but this. It's probably one of the best episodes in Excel Saga and will easily make even the most jaded anime fan laugh.
Downhill the series goes..........2003-01-27
The Madness Continues.......2003-01-19
This DVD contains episodes 14-17 of the series. The same crazy nature you've come to expect still exists with looks at Japanese lolita fetishes, lesbianism, anime in America, merchandising, and more. The lolita and young "kawaii" lesbian nature of some of the episodes (in satire form) began pushing the line for me. However, I understand they are not doing this as an [inexpensive] thrill, but to poke fun at the Japanese culture where this exists.
Story-wise, in addition to the normal parody nature of the series, the thin arc of a plot begins to gain a bit of weight here. We see that the Safety Assurance Agency was created to block Across's efforts to take over the city. Not directly, as they don't know who's doing all of this consipracy activity, but they know something is going on.
For those wondering if the new (English) voice would pass the test, she does. The rest of the English dub is pretty good. The Menchi pop-up extra is back (great!). The various subtitle options & Japanese language option are included as are the standard ADV previews. There are a few "hidden" extras around, but you have to find them. The menu interface is the worst done of the first four DVD's.
Bottom line: If you liked the first 13 episodes of Excel Saga, you'll love this DVD.
