5 out of 5 stars "Video & Audio Nirvana for the P-38 Aficionado".......2007-03-28

True fans of the P-38 "Lightning" will find this DVD a truly moving experience, with stunning aerial footage of the late Jeff Ethell flying an immaculate P-38L over the Pacific coastline. This is more than worth the purchase price for these latter-day scenes alone, though other portions are interesting as well. Not really mentioned was that the P-38 was designed as an interceptor, and never intended to 'dogfight' smaller, lighter opposition. That it succeeded in doing so was greatly to the credit of it's pilots, and it's versatility. D. Judkins

5 out of 5 stars Keep History Alive - Get This Series.......2002-08-31

This series represents an important archive of information about a crucial part of World history. This collection should be part of every Middle or High schools' media center. If you have the means, buy even one episode on DVD and donate it to a local school. Specific to my review, now, this episode about the P-38 Lightning was my first exposure to the Roaring Glory experience. It completely entertained and informed me, giving me an entire new respect and admiration for the men who designed and fought in these machines. The DVD is astounding in it's image quality and sound. There are many extra features, making this little nugget of history a steal at the prices found on Amazon! Want to keep history alive? Want to feel renewed pride as an American? Start your own adventure with Vol. 9 of Roaring Glory - let the "Lightning" strike you today!

5 out of 5 stars Best P-38 Info Out There!.......2001-05-19

This is amazing! The photography is beautiful - crisp, in focus, well lit, beautiful. Jeff Ethells's commentary is excellent as he puts the 38 through its paces from preflight through shutdown and flight off the beautiful coast of Oregon at Tillamook. This segment is also haunting as I think the plane he is flying is the same one he died in not too long after the footage was taken for this segment. Also the one featured on the cover of Flight Magazine in Jeff's "Flying the..." series. But it is the best footage of a living, breathing, P-38 you will find. It also has the training film that you'll find separately at museums and such on VHS - but on DVD so you can play it as much as you want. I haven't had time to go through the whole DVD yet but everything I've seen so far is too good to be true - but it is. If you like P-38s, this is an absolute must-have.

5 out of 5 stars If you love airplanes, you'll love this DVD.......2001-03-20

This DVD has excellent sound. It gives just enough technical detail to keep it interesting and then moves to the flying scenes. The "Young Pilots" part is a little corny, but my children love it because it reads like a story. The training film is quite interesting and explains a lot of the technical aspects of flying the Lightning. Be sure to have a surround sound system and then crank it up loud!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-07-29

This has the best sound of all the series (all of which are good). It is quite a thrill when, from the cockpit view, the engines are started. It continues with the run up before take off. I had this in a VHS version and bought the DVD to get better sound. It is the best of the series (I have them all)

2 out of 5 stars Just fair--and disappointing.......2006-11-21

The whole Roaring Glory series is only fair. While the modern-day, restored aircraft footage is pretty good, the audio quality is awful. At times the ambient engine noise is so loud that you have difficulty understanding the pilot's words as he's describing a sequence. That's just plain poor audio engineering.

The series can be rented from Netflix. I was truly disappointed in all of these titles.

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!.......2004-03-24

I'm not sure what I expected when I bought this... probably something along the lines of what you see on the `Wings' network - lots of scratchy footage of old planes with monotonous narration of specifications. But that's not at all the approach that this video takes. This is my first `Roaring Glory Warbirds' disc, but I ordered two more immediately after seeing it.

The roughly hour-long main program begins with our pilot-narrator standing before the Corsair. He takes us on a brief tour of the outside plane as he performs a pre-flight check of all of the important `parts,' and this alone was great! You get a close-up view of all of these details while a skilled pilot explains what he's looking for and why. Then he jumps in, gives us a tour of all of the controls, and takes the plane up!

It's wonderful seeing this classic machine actually in the air, not in a Hollywood film or old newsreel footage. The picture is quite sharp; the Dolby sound is wonderfully vibrant and great for that prop-engine sound. As the pilot does maneuvers with the F4U, he explains everything he's doing, eventually landing it.

The program then switches to a dramatization of a young pilot training for and then flying an F4U in battle. This was modestly but nicely done, too, and informative. It was interesting, for instance, to hear how flight manuals for these planes were so scarce that if a pilot could get his hands on one he would hoard it!

Extras on the disc include an actual F4U training film, which ran about half an hour. This was really interesting, too, on many levels: it explained aspects of the plane and how it should be flown in detail, and is also a time capsule of what kinds of training pilots received.

Other extras include a still photo gallery and pages from a Corsair flight manual reproduced on-screen, but this is the weaker part of the disc. This could have been much better if the disc's logo wasn't plastered across the top third of the screen, obscuring the images - I'm not sure what they were thinking here. Even better, I would love to have seen some of these diagrams reproduced in print form and included as an insert with the disc, though I realize that this would have added to the cost of the disc.

More information about the F4U's place in WWII warfare would have been appreciated, too. I would have given an extra star for this. As it is, this disc is more of a `here is the plane' presentation, with the added dramatization about the pilots.

I really wish they could add some British, German, and perhaps even Russian planes to this series, though I realize that the lack of availability of these planes may make this nearly impossible.

3 out of 5 stars Vought F4U Corsair DVD.......2003-06-18

This is not a bad DVD, but it hardly earns 5 stars. The narration by Steve Hinton is good; but you can tell his forte is flying not narrating. He does explain the preflight and technical aspect of the Corsair adequately. The tale of the adventures of USMC pilot Verne Salisbury looks like it was filmed by amateurs. The tan tinting attempts to make the film look old, but it fails miserably. There are some excellent flying sequences of a museum piece Corsair in a modern setting. However if you are seeking a movie to explain the mission of the F4U Vaught Corsair during WWII you will find this DVD inconclusive. There are a few quick shots of historic footage; but the story is somewhat sketchy. While this film has some endearing points, it does lack much in storyline.

3 out of 5 stars Roaring Glory Warbirds, Vol. 7; Vought F4U Corsair.......2003-06-13

This DVD is okay. There are a lot better. There is excellent footage of one museum piece Corsair flying. The narrator is also very good at explaining the preflight and technology behind this aircraft. The attempt to make new footage look old appears cheap and phoney. It is very clear that the actors are not professional; obvious that they are reading a script. This DVD also lacks in providing much historical footage or detail. The little provided is very sketchy and not conclusive. If you are looking for a great DVD on the F4U Corsair you will probably be disappointed in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2003-05-14

This DVD is one of the best values a World War II enthusiast can find! Included is not only a full color flight session in your favorite WWII warbird, but the original training film and a full, printable manual. This DVD not only tells you what the plane can do, but this DVD teaches you how to fly it! If you have any interest in WWII aviation, buy this DVD!

1 out of 5 stars A GREAT WWII FIGHTER, BUT A POORLY PRODUCED DVD.......2006-08-04

I jumped at a chance to get a good DVD focusing on the P-47. Unfortunately that did not happen. What I got turned out to be a mismatched collection of scenes made up of some old, b&w, uninteresting shots with a few gun camera images here and there. All those were sprinkled lightly among a great many recently made color shots of somebody's very well maintained P-47 with a gawdy paint job not remotely suggestive of this great aircraft's role in helping to save the world. An attempt is made to weave a story or two into the DVD, but fails miserably. As a first or second year film student's production it would be received with a few yawns.

5 out of 5 stars Best Fighter of WWII.......2002-09-27

This is the warbird I would have wanted to be in with my life on the line. My humble opinion is that this is the best fighter of WWII. This DVD is great for the detail, the video quality, the multi-angles, and much more. I love to watch the landing from the pilot's point of view, it makes you feel like you're flying the plane yourself. You can hear that beautiful, throaty roar of the massive Pratt & Whitney, you can almost smell the burning oil. The Family Photo Album is great, even the mini-movie is good, with actual WWII footage. The pilot's manual is also great. Another must-have DVD for warbird fans.

3 out of 5 stars A bit too superficial, but still OK.......1999-08-01

It's a nice video, but it's a bit too superficial for my taste. I want more details, and I want to see all the little details of the aircraft. Nice aerial shots though, and the training film is interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A must for warbird fans, the Jug is finally honored........1999-07-27

Long overshadowed by the Mustang, the P-47 finally gets the credit it so proudly deserves for its capabilities as the finest fighter-bomber of all time. Jeff Ethell shows how this massive yet extremely fast fighter could out-roll and out-dive anything in the WWII era. Additionally, he demonstrates how the Jug was so smooth and stable, it made the most potent gunnery platform for its massive firepower (as evidenced by the highest scoring fighter group, the 56th - Zemke's Wolfpack, who flew NOTHING but P-47s throughout the war). The only thing missing here would be a more detailed walk-around and information on the men who flew the Jug such as Francis Gabreski, Bob Johnson, Bud Mahurin, Dave Schilling, Hub Zemke, George Novotny, etc. and who all aced in this bird. Several are still alive and well and their first-person accounts could have added substantially to this disk. It is a shame it is not longer in length. Regardless, it is a great addition to anyone's warbird collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Warbird..........2005-10-17

This was the second of the Roaring Glory DVD's I purchased and I thoroughly enjoy this series. Gives you a nice overview of the plane in question, this one the Hellcat. Steve Hinton is a bit dry and talks kind of fast. He also seems like he is totally ad libbing the words which does not appear too professional. But the Hellcat itself is the star of the show. The flight footage is fantastic and my only complaint about all of these DVD's is the fact that the actual new flight footage is just not long enough. The flight sequence only takes about 24 minutes before it's over. The extras on the DVD are nice to have. Overall, get this series of DVD's for your warplane collection, but don't think it's an in-depth expose of your favorite warplane. It's nice eye candy and at $6 a DVD from the amazon sellers, it's nicely affordable.

2 out of 5 stars Pilots Are Not Necessarily Historians.......2004-12-31

Flying an aircraft is an acquired skill. Pilots who are qualified to fly rare and unique aircraft such as antique warbirds should NOT be placed in the role of an historian unless they have proven knowledge on the subject being presented. The pilot in this case is Steve Hinton described on the back of the video as an "expert warbird pilot and Unlimited air racer".

During his presentation, he tells the viewer that "Grumman Iron Works" is located in New Jersey. Gulp! While his detailed walkaround presentation continues, one would hope he would come across the legendary manufacturer's identification plate revealing the well-known location of Grumman. It's all down hill after that. His speech is too rapid and not always intelligible to the viewer. One would think there would be a professional announcer or voice-actor aviation buff available on the cheap in Southern California for this obviously very low budget film. The film attempts to reenact combat situations ala "History Channel" by splicing in WW II file footage of aerial combat with grimacing actors sitting and playing make-believe in a parked airplane in Chino, California at the "Planes of Fame Museum". I won't even go into the detailed inaccuracies of Navy/Marine Corps uniforms worn by the "actors". The aerial shots of the museum airplane are great to watch as pilot Hinton flies the aircraft with the grace one would expect after reading how his piloting expertise is described. Unfortunately, there's too much sub-amateur theater (awful) and not enough flying of this great airplane manufactured in Bethpage, (Long Island) New York.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value, accurate in detail.......2003-03-12

This DVD is a great value for anyone interested in WWII airplanes and air combat footage.

The single disc contains 3 documentaries covering:

    1. Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - A complete overview of the B-17 from inception to combat usage, with an emphasis on 8th Air Force operations against Germany

    2. Consolidated B-24 Liberator - An overview with an emphasis on the famous Ploesti raid of 1942

    3. Defenders of the Reich - An overview of Luftwaffe fighters, with an emphasis on daylight air defense

The main reasons I like this video are:

    a. Accuracy - Most documentaries get the basics correct but miss out in the details. However writer John Bruning (Crimson Sky: The Air Battle for Korea, etc.) has ensured that the details of model changes, unit deployments, etc. are very accurate. Additionally, the video footage used during the narration is more often than not the correct model of the plane, which is a rarity among video documentaries.

    b. More footage than face - Most documentaries spend as much time on the "faces" as they do the combat footage. This one has more combat footage with background narration and less face-to-camera interviews than is usual.

For anyone with an interest in air combat PC games, it should be noted that John Bruning was the official historian for Dynamix when it released the critcally acclaimed Red Baron, Aces Of The Pacific, and Aces Over Europe PC games in the early '90s.

The only negative I can think of is that there is no option to play all three documentaries in succession.

4 out of 5 stars Great warbird DVD but not enough..........2005-10-17

I had bought an original Roaring Glory VHS several years ago about the P-40 with Jeff Ethell doing a great job on that particular program. So, when I saw these newer Roaring Glory DVD's, I had to try them out. I began with the Grumman Avenger because this was not a fighter plane like all the others. The DVD has great in-flight footage and the extras are nice to have such as the actual WWII training film (excellent!). My only critique is that it's not long enough! The flight sequence with Unlimited racer Steve Hinton is only around 24 minutes. His delivery is matter of fact and I enjoyed Jeff Ethell much more, but at least these programs are getting made! It's neat to see this torpedo bomber put through it's paces, but the whole flight check is just not long enough for my tastes. Overall, though, to see this plane flying is more than enough reason to get these DVD's. They remind us of what truly was the American spirit to come up with these beautiful but deadly warplanes. And at barely $6 a DVD, you can afford to get all of the titles in this series...

4 out of 5 stars What a big beast this aircraft was !.......2004-04-24

I think the best part of these series are the military training video's included. You get the option to watch the actual training film WW2 crews watched before they flew these aircraft. What's interesting about the Grumman Avenger is how big it actually was. Hard to imagine landing this aircraft on an escort carrier! Much larger and heavier than a Hellcat. Steve Hinton does a great ( if boring ) job of doing a walk around and flight in an actual flying Avenger. As usual he points out very interesting aspects of the Avenger...such as built in tie-downs for the folding wings. Such tid-bits make these DVD's so interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars good detail.......1999-01-29
