Sexy Asian Babes, Kung-Fu & Some Gun Violence.......2006-11-01
My Tittle says it all, If you like these 3 things than this is the dvd for you. DVD shows: Gruesome violence & Sexy women. Also shows a mix of realistic & Charlies angel type Kung-Fu fights. Does rip off La Femme Nikita a little but in that movie the trainees were not all female & did not have to kill each other to stay alive
Madam M's finishing school.......2006-06-29
The kidnapped girls are truly finished off, all but three of them, most of them in combat with with their classmates. Then, at their graduation dinner, the survivors are drugged and forcibly deflowered - more of their training. Training as assassins, trained to use their bare hands (and other bare parts) to disarm their assigned victims without them even knowing it, and to dispatch them.
There's more here than the super-assassin-babe genre's facade would suggest. Despite the gross artificiality of the environment that M creates, the girls form realistic jealousies and rivalries, but especially affections and loyalty. Combat doesn't create the conflict in this movie, but affections do conflict with loyalites.
Reading much into this movie would mean reading too much into it. Plumbing its depths won't take very many plums. Still, it's not just the stunts and wire-work that pull this one above the ordinary. You really want to like these charming and deadly women, not just because of the cute little girls they start as.

It was acutally good WOW!.......2006-05-20
I thought it would just another film but i loved it action pack non stop great fighting and its in english NO SUBTITLE distracts me from the movie love it, GET IT....
Fun film, rent it!.......2006-04-21
This film isn't a blockbuster. Hell, it isn't even a "good film" as far as really good films are concerned (this film really doesn't warrant me going into detail on what I consider a "good film" should be), but it is good old fashioned entertainment!
What do you get when you abduct little European and Asian girls and train them as stone cold killers? An exciting movie with a gripping storylines! All the makings of a quality production, right?
Unfortunately this film suffers from the same flaw many modern martial arts releases suffer from: the scenes which should be emotionally gripping come across as utterly silly. The formula of such films is simple: really bad dialogue, awful acting, absurd gruesome scenes or the combination of all of the above (like this film has). The further along this film became the more I was reminded that I was watching a foreign martial arts movie.
But I didn't give the rating I did because I didn't like it! Taking the film as a martial arts movie, I would go so far as to say this is certainly one entertaining film! The storyline is the true gem, if it sounds like you might like it - give it a rent - chances are you won't be buying it anytime soon but at least it'll entertain you.
The acting is what you would expect from a low budget foreign film and shouldn't be that much of a surprise. However it should be noted that the action is fast paced, the women are beautiful, and the men are utterly clueless!
3.5 - I wish I could give it a 4 but that would be misleading, I should note though that I very much liked the storyline and found it surprisingly memorable for such a low budget film (a film I would gladly watch time and again if it were on TV, but again I wouldn't spend my money on buying it).
Best HK action movie ever.......2006-03-14
Combine equal parts "Nikita", HK martial arts, and bloodsport = Naked Weapon. Really good action sequences, both martial arts and gunplay, very bloody fights, gratitious sex and nudity, what more can a red blooded male ask for in a movie?
I highly recommend this movie if you are into women assasins, gunfire and lousy dialogue.

Jean-Claude Van Damme gets a kick out of himself in this clever if barely competent action thriller, in which the likable Muscles from Brussels plays twin brothers separated at birth by a murderous Hong Kong crime syndicate. While the genial Chad lives the posh life as a California aerobics instructor, his sibling Alex chews fat cigars back in China, running a mahjong parlor and making some extra bucks as a smuggler. A quarter-century after being sent to different corners of the globe, they reunite and decide to seek vengeance against the cartel that killed their parents. From there the story and action set pieces are fairly predictable, but that hardly matters since the film's real appeal is in the amusing way the two Van Dammes deal with sibling rivalry, especially where women are concerned. Van Damme, seeking his box-office breakthrough at the time, might have received more of a commercial boost had this movie simply been directed with greater professionalism. The lighting, editing, and shot selection are often ridiculously below the standard of low-budget features. But Double Impact does have its compensations, especially in the casting of leather-clad Cory Everson and exemplary villain Bolo Yeung as a pair of killers who cross the twins' path. --Tom Keogh
Description
What could be better than Jean-Claude Van Damme in an explosively entertaining action extravaganza? Two of him! There's twice the excitement, twice the mayhem and twice the fun in this turbo-charged adventure that pushes the thrills into overdrive. Van Damme leaps into the dual roles of Chad and Alex Wagner, twin brothers who were separated after their parents' brutal murder. Years later, the two couldn't be more different: Chad is a slick Beverly Hills fitness instructor while Alex isa rough-and-tumble smuggler on the gritty streets of Hong Kong. But when fate throws them together again, Chad and Alex discover that there's one thing they have in common: they're both fighting machines! Determined to enact revenge on their parents' killers, the martial-arts experts kick, chop andshoot all the way to an electrifying final showdown aboard a gargantuan freighter in Hong Kong Harbor.

WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE FOR SHORE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
should have done a doublemint twin commercial too.......2007-01-15
There are several reasons why this film is one of my fav Van Damme films ever, and 2 twin brothers played by Van Damme is just part of the reason. Double Impact also gives us a decent plot and some great baddies, including everyone's favorite "Bolo Young" who has played the villain in numerous films such as Bloodsport, Enter The Dragon, Breathing Fire and Tiger Claws to name a few.
Van Damme's two roles are identical twin brothers by appearance, yet completely opposite by personality. The one brother, Chad, has been raised in France & California, and looks like the Zack Morris of muscles. The o ther brother, Alex, is definetly the much cooler of the two, with a touch of bad guy in himself and much cooler talkin. The interaction between these two are fun to watch, and probably had some success in the film, since "Replicant" was made several years later, also starring 2 Van Damme's with opposite personalities.
Bolo Young fans may want this movie just for him. While he barely has any lines, if any (and he never does in any films), he's just a dirty guy in this flick. With a nasty facial scar and dressed in the bad guy black suit, his presence is known, leading up to final fight with the Zack Morris Van Damme. The fight is short, but sweet. Yes, we get to see his ridiculousy crazy pecks in action.
The rest of the movie is not bad, but nothing spectacular. For a B-movie, this is one of the better one's The acting is so-so and the script is eh. Directing, ediitng, lighting could have been better but thats what you get with a lower budget film. I think Van Damme fans will still be very pleased, and no doubt this is one of his more enjoyable films. Stay away from anything made after 2000 if you want great classic Van Damme, the earlier films are where its at, and Double Impact is a great choice.
One Damme Good Movie.......2006-05-19
This movie to me is a golden classic. You have one brother (Chad) a ladies guy that uses his martial arts to fight and the other brother (Alex) street [...] that uses guns and martial arts. Bother brothers played by Van Damme. I love this movie, probally my favorite Van Damme movie. Anyway The mother and Father are murdered and the twins are seperated. After years they finally come together to seek revenge on those who murdered their parents.
not the best.......2006-04-06
Usually Jean-Claude's films are excellent (except for Street Fighter)but there was something missing from this film. Its not that bad but not the best.I hope he gets back on his feet.
Cool Film!!!.......2005-11-24
This film is a true classic. Story is a bit slow, I kinda did't like it to much. The film was almost like his other 80's film but still I thought it was more like a "Ladys soap opera". It Some what has some awesome action in the movie.
This is one of those films that if there is nothing else to watch on tv then you can pop this DVD in and kill some time with it.

AWESOME!!!.......2007-05-02
Victor Wong does it again with his cinematic Ninja-y magic, and the boys are back this time and ready to kick some serious booty! This movie is a pure delight.
After the first 3 Ninjas movie, I was thinking how great that these 3 Ninjas can work together to fight the powers of evil, because ninjas customarily work very independently, like a brain surgeon or electrician would. Masters of the ninja sciences know that they are bound by duty, honor, and super high kicks, so to find 3 Ninjas that are on the same page...well, that's just amazing.
The story of 3 Ninjas Kick Back is loosely based on the famous novel "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich," and for history buffs the film is like a whirlwind travelogue set during the decline of the Roman Empire, with very clear allegorical references to the struggles between the infamous Rasputin and Catherine the Great. When the 3 Ninjas find their three backs against the wall, they fight bad guys like they are going out of style!!!
I love 2/3 of the ninjas, but there's one I just can't stand. You know the one I'm talking about. He's lousy.
A brilliant movie that will make you glad to be a ninja or a lover of ninjas.
Only one kid from the original,but..........2007-03-10
I loved it.It's stood the test of time for me.That could be my nostalgia though.I remember what I liked about it as a kid(and now) was that it took them out of the usual environment...to JAPAN!For being a kid obsessed with the whole japanese influence on America,I almost peed my pants. And I guess from being a kid who didn't have high standards, made me pay no attention to the different actors as Rocky and Tum-Tum.It's got the usual feel of the 1st,with Rocky being involved with a girl,good-guy bad-guy conflicts, etc.Don't expect a masterpiece, but it's a decent kid movie.
as good as the first if not a tad better.......2006-06-23
As with my review in 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up, I have to make something clear. The original 3 Ninjas trilogy was released out of order. First came 3 Ninjas (1992), then 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up which was shot back to back with the first movie (also 1992) though not released until 1995, then 3 Ninjas Kick Back (1994) which is actually the 3rd installment of the official triology. Having said that, I will now review 3 Ninjas Kick Back. Now I realize that alot of the reviewers favor the original 3 Ninjas but for some reason I tend to favor Ninjas Kick Back a bit more. Anyway, the humor and the fight/action scenes are all good and not so much over-the-top as was in the 2nd movie 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up. The actors of the parents of the 3 Ninjas from the first film return (the mom is kind of a babe in my opinion), Victor Wong returns yet a third time as the grandfather, and Max Elliot Slade returns for the third time as Colt. The actors for Rocky and Tum Tum are different but still do a good job. I also liked the soundtrack to this movie as well. I especially liked the tune that followed everytime Tum Tum yells "Scramble!". As for the plot, the 3 Ninjas get a chance to go to Japan with their grandfather but little do they know that an enemy from their grandfather's youth has been plotting revenge. That's all I will give away concerning the plot though trust me, the plot is good. Other things I liked about this movie are the character developments and the brief insight of the japanese culture regarding sight seeing. As for the characters, the 3 Ninjas act more grown up with the exception of Tum Tum and the main villain's goons aren't quite as dumbed down as was in the first two movies. 3 Ninjas Kick Back completes the third of the official trilogy. Like the others, however, the DVD has no extras. This is sad! Oh, if you are a fan of the 3 Ninjas films then you may want to stay clear of the fourth installment with Hulk Hogan. It is geared towards small children in addition to none of the actors from the previous films returning with the exception of a brief appearance of Victor Wong as the grandfather. Of course if you are a parent, you may not consider these flaws to be a bad thing but just remember... I told you so!
Great Service!!.......2006-01-31
I ordered the movies, and they were on my doorstep a day after!Great service!!! Great Delivery!!! I will be ordering again!
The best 3 ninjas movie.......2005-03-03
This movie is fun and has lots of action. Rocky and Tum tum changed actors, but the movie is still good. Unlike High Noon on Mega Mountian. That is a movie you should stay away from it puts 3 ninjas to shame. Stick with the other 3 and you'll have a ggod time.

Based on the video game, Fatal Fury is widely regarded as one of the best kung fu anime features. The good guys are Terry "Hungry Wolf" Bogard and his brother, Andy; Thai kickboxer Joe Higashi; and the curvaceous ninja Mai. With their masses of spiky blond hair, narrow blue eyes, and sharp features, the Bogard brothers almost cross over into the "beautiful boy" genre, but they and Joe are muscled like dinosaurs. Mai, who has a crush on Andy, provides both humor and jiggle interest in a succession of minuscule outfits. The heroes are pitted against an assortment of equally buffed-out Bad Guys, led by Laocorn, a descendant of the ancient clan of Gaudeamus, who is seeking to obtain "the armor of Vulcan." A relic going back to the time of Alexander the Great, the armor transforms anyone who wears all seven pieces of it into a god. But Laocorn's twin sister, Sulia, knows it will also make the wearer hopelessly evil: she enlists the Bogards and their friends to prevent her brother from acquiring the scattered pieces. Director Masami Obari uses all the standard tricks for the bone-crunching martial arts battles--blurs, streaks, slow-motion images of blows landing on skulls, camera spins, flashes of lighting, flames, and, of course, gobs of blood. Fatal Fury feels like a cross between an Indiana Jones film and a WWE tag-team match, and is sure to delight adolescent boys. (Rated 13 Up) --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
POWER GEYSER!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-24
This was one of the first anime I ever saw, following the first two installments and Bio Booster Armor Guyver. It was, and still is, one of the most awesome, outrageous, far out action movies ever. The music is killer and epic, the attitude is daring and optomistic, the action is special move for special move eye boggling, and the story is classically ludicrous. It's the kind of anime that was so off the wall that it begged recognition over seas. Masami Obari is sadly one of the forgotten masters of early anime. He's got a real distinctive style and attitude to his work that stands out of the big-eye-small-mouth crowd.
Movies like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children have more in common with this, than say, Tenjo Tenge or Naruto. Though, it's probably more comprehensible than the aforementioned Advent Children. Every bit as crazy with the action though. In all honest, the narrative here has a great sense of showmanship and dramatic storytelling. When Terry gets pissed, it's righteous anger that you don't see heroes get pumped with anymore. He fights like a balls-to-the-wall, selfless, heart-of-steel hero. We don't have genuine heroes like Terry in our action movies anymore.
This is pure pulp martial arts mayhem, and along with the first two installments, a wicked finale for the Fatal Fury series, even though it has jack to do with any of the games. Oh, and did I mention the dubbing is some of the best ever? I can't stand dubbs these days, but Fatal Fury has an all star cast with personality and energy.
great anime.......2006-08-01
I enjoy two things in anime, people fighting in giant robots and people fighting with super powers. This movie satisfies the latter in a major way.
Boring! .......2005-09-17
To be quite honest! This movie SUCKED! The story was somewhat senseless, the villien, Laocorn was very boring and stupid, some of the characters were dumb, and most of all, Mai was ruined and acted silly and annoying! But, there was one character I liked, Laocorn's lovely, and cute sister, Sulia! I'm telling you! This movie was soooooooooooooooo BORING! The fight secens wern't too bad! But, even those were boring! So, if you are a Fatal Fury fan or not, stay away from this movie!
the King of Fighters.......2005-08-29
I love the video games Fatal Fury and when I heard theirs a movie I just couldn't wait. After seeing the Street Fighter 2 movie it was great. I'm thinking the animation on this movies is just as good. I can tell this one will have lots of action
You can't be serious.......2005-05-31
Am I the only one who wasn't brain dead while watching this movie. This final installment to Fatal Fury suffers from the same ailments as the first two. Yes its better, but not by much. Joe Higashi got shafted again by not having much fight time against the actual foes. Between her first appearance and this one Mai used only 2 moves and lost both her fights. The most interesting thing about her is her breast. And I could've sworn I saw the X-Men fighting in that final battle. I thought they were martial artist. When did they become mutants?

better than the original.......2006-08-19
Kickboxer 2 followed up the first successful Kickboxer, but minus Van Damme. David Sloan (played by Sasha Mitchell) is now the focus, the apparent 3rd brother of Kurt and Eric Sloan from the 1st movie. Sasha Mitchell may not be anywhere as close to Van Damme in the athletic department, but that doesn't hurt Kickboxer 2 at all. Sasha Mitchell is a better actor and as a whole, Kickboxer 2 does a better job than the 1st movie in that department. The story is pretty decent too - this time both characters (good and evil) are out for revenge. The evil is Tong Po, who returns from the 1st Kickboxer, played by Michel Qissi. He only has one line in the movie and doesn't appear until much later on, but it is a grand appearance. Matthias Hues (Death Match, Blackbelt, No Retreat No Surrender 2) also has a role in the movie, fighting David early on in the ring, the 1st of 3 fights in the movie. Vince Murdocco (Ring of Fire, To Be The Best) is also one of the main characters, who fights Tong Po, the 2nd fight in the movie. This match is all in slow-motion, but it is the only slow motion fight I have ever enjoyed, creating a sense of suspense that supports a main element in the story. The final fight of course is between David and Tong Po, which is about 5-1/2 minutes in length. It is mostly slow-motion once again, but is still quite entertaining and bloody, with broken glass glued and taped to the fists (same used in the 1st Kickboxer).
Kickboxer 1 is definetly a Van Damme classic. Kickboxer 2 began a different path, but in no way did it succeed in being a bad martial-arts film. I highly recommend this if you want to see some good fights backed by a decent story.
KICKBOXER 2 is a Hit!!.......2006-04-05
KICKBOXER 2 has great fighting and action, with a good story. This continues with Sasha Mitchell (Step By Step), as Jean Claude Van Damme's younger brother. Instead of returning, Van Damme went to make the movie 'Double Impact.' Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Dennis Chan (Kickboxer) are great additions to THE ROAD BACK. The KICKBOXER stories are really raw for the action movies of that time period. Sasha Mitchell probably does his best performance of his career. After enjoying this, continue with KICKBOXER 3 & 4!
ranks up with the first one.......2005-06-26
Its hard to believe that some people gave this movie a negative review just because it didn't have Jean Claude Van Damme in it. Sasha Mitchell does a good job in this one. He plays David Sloan, the younger brother of Jean Claude's character who we learn was murdered by former champion Tong Po at the end of the first Kickboxer. The trainer (I don't know his name) from the first Kickboxer comes to help David prepare for his fight with Tong Po. Yes, like the first movie Kicboxer 2 is about avenging the death of a brother and like the first it delivers good martial arts action along with the return of Tong Po. As with the first movie, the Kickboxer 2 dvd has no features and is not widescreen.
They shouldn't have bothered without Van Damme..........2004-09-06
Alot of people think this is better than the original Kickboxer, however, I really don't think so. First of all, I think they probably shouldn't have bothered making a sequel at all without Van Damme. I'm not really sure the exact reason why Van Damme didn't do a sequel, I'm guessing he either wanted too much money to do one, or he just wasn't interested in doing one at all. (Generally, Van Damme was just never really big on sequels.) Perhaps it was a combination of both reasons, who really knows for sure. Either way, I don't think they should have bothered.
It's not that Sasha Mitchell(aka, Cody, the goofy kid from Step by Step) is bad in the lead role...in fact, he was very convincing, given his real-life Kickboxing experience...he just doesn't have the same style or coordination as Van Damme. On top of all that, the thing I find most irritating of all is that the writers felt the need to write in some really bad dialogue to explain what happened to Kurt and Eric Sloane from the previous movie. I was never a huge fan of the whole "everybody from the past movie are all dead" thing. By the time they got to Kickboxer 5, it was starting to get really ridiculous with this.
The rest of the cast is a mix...Peter Boyle gave a decent performance, and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa always gives a top notch performance in anything he is in. Hell, even Matthias Hughes(who plays villains in a variety of B-action movies) gave a decent performance, but some of the other supporting actors left alot to be desired. Whoever the guy was that played McKaia(or is it McKaya?), I forget the name, gave a pretty lousy performance, as did Vince Murdocco(Brian). As for the Tong Po in this version(credited as "Michel Qissi"), I'm not sure whether or not it is the same Tong Po from the first movie, I don't think he is, as he looks a bit different, but he just seemed really weird in this version.
If they were intent on making a sequel without Van Damme, then they could have at least tried. The movie started out with a goo plot, and solid foundation, however, after the first fight with David and Neil Vargas, the plot starts to jump all over the place. Tong Po and Sanga are introduced into the movie very late, even though they are the entire focus of the story towards the end. On top of less-than-stellar writing and story development, the fight scenes in this one were terrible. The last two fights in the movie were shown ENTIRELY in slow motion. By the end of the last fight between David and Tong Po, I felt like I was going to get vertigo if I watched it any longer. They were really stretching some things, too. I find it hard to believe that the fight would have gone on that long after Tong Po knocked the referee out. Is it a WWE wrestling match or what? Also, what makes even less sense is that David is escorted out of the building by about seven security guards, and then a few moments later he is magically back at ringside just in time to see Brian killed.
As for the soundtrack, this movie had a couple decent songs; "My Brother's Eyes," "A Man Alone," "It's All up to You," however, once again the movie falls short in comparison to the first Kickboxer in this aspect. For those who did enjoy the soundtrack, good luck finding those tracks, as since a Kickboxer 2 soundtrack was never commercially released, those tracks are virtually impossible to get.
Even though I don't necessarily think this movie was great, I think it was at least better than some of the other Kickboxer sequels. It wasn't as bad as the third one(which was probably the worst of the series), and it couldn't possibly be as bad as Kickboxer 4, with plastic-face Tong Po and a plot that made virtually no sense. As for Kickboxer 5(which was ironically a half-remake of Kickboxer 2), it was actually decent, given the talents of Mark Dacascos, and better writers.
All in all I think this was a poor sequel and they shouldn't have bothered.
Orignal is better!.......2003-12-24
this movie is ok but it doesnt top the orignal, jean claude van damme is the best actor and he destroys Sasha Mitchell. Sasha Mitchell doesnt come close to the kind of actor jean claude van damme is. I say get the first one, its so much better.

Disappointing box set............2006-05-01
I will admit right off the bat that I am a B-Movie fan when it comes to action films. I especially like b-action movie franchises. I own the American Ninja series, The Delta Force trilogy, Missing in Action trilogy, etc. I liked the Kickboxer films and I always ment to get them on DVD but I kept putting them off. When I heard there was a DVD box set coming out I quickly pre-ordered the item without knowing the nature of the set. I came out extremely disappointed.
First off this box set contains NO special features. I didn't expect there to be (I mean come on...this is the Kickboxer franchise not Star Wars) but I know some people out there are wondering. All the films are also in Full Screen. Again I expected this as films of this nature very rarely get the widescreen treatment. So what was I so disappointed in?
Well, I was disappointed in the packaging of the movies. All five discs are housed in a cheap, poorly made fold out case. I was hoping each film would come in their own seperate keep case or even perhapes those slim cases manufacturing companies are starting to use in box sets. Not the "case" here. It's a lot like the case of the Alien Quadrilogy just more poorly made. The case is so poorly made that the spindles that hold the discs keep breaking during shipping and the discs come dislodged and in the mean time get scratched. I hard to have it shipped and returned twice.
Overall it seems NO effort went into this box set and Lions Gate Entertainment just seemed to want to make it as cheap as possible. I figured I was saving money with this box set as it retails for $29.99 (A few bucks cheaper here on amazon). This is not the case. If you buy each film seperatly (Kickboxer 3 & 4 come in a double feature)it comes to a total of around $33. For me its worth the few extra bucks just to get each film in it's seperate case instead of this cheap cardboard box set. I say skip out on the box set and just buy the films seperatly.
Kickin' it Old School.......2006-04-21
ha. I'm the 1st review huh? okay... well if you bought this set than you pretty much know what you were getting into. This is the original Kickboxer (Van-Damme) and all 4 of it's sequels.
I love the original Kickboxer! Van-Damme movies might be cheesy, but thereS something about the 80's feel and those lame unappropriate 80's love ballads that make this an action classic.
Kickboxer 2: is a great Revenge story following David Sloane (SASHA MITCHEL) Avenging the short and pointless Death of his brother Kurt (Van-Damme).
K3: While lacking the spark the series once had, is still a good movie.
K4: decided to take the series darker by making David an unemotional fighting zombie out for revenge against TONG-PO (...again...) this time after his wife has been kidnapped... it seems like a thrown together story that the actors didn't even seem to interested in.
K5: tried to ressurrect the series casting a new hero to replace David Sloane (who also is written off quickly).
I enjoyed the series and for $25 was worth getting to update my worn out VHS tapes. However, if you have them already seperately on DVD I'd avoid this collection at all costs! as it doesn't provide any new material. no special features at all!

Description
Why do women fight? This riveting behind-the-scenes look into the world of the female combatant takes us from manicures to knockouts! It turns our attention to the woman who is widely considered pound for pound the most dangerous fighter of any time, undefeated boxing sensation Lucia Rijker (Rollerball, TV's "Thunderbox"). She reveals the stages of physical, mental and spiritual growth while smashing opponents and preconceptions. "Shadow Boxers" exposes the beauty and brutality of the sport through the eyes of the introspective fighter while showing what's really at stake when women enter the ring.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, Strong , Sensual.......2003-12-15
Lucia Rijker, the female boxer who is the star of Shadow Boxers is liquid steel. She is gorgeous, powerful, intelligent and incredibly charismatic. The director has done for female athletes what Bruce Weber did for male athletes - she has aestheticized a powerful elite female athlete in a way that makes her look as gorgous and sensual as a Calvin Klein model while she dances around the ring gracefully anihiliating her opponents. Bankowsky shoots and edits with such creative beauty that both Rijker and the sport are elevated to the level of high art.
groove to the beat of hip hop and hard punches.......2003-09-19
this movie will blow you away !!!!! i had never seen such a powerfull combination of emotion, strenght and beauty combined with the best sound track EVER .
if you are into women's boxing Get THIS movie if you are not, Get it anyway!!!! you'll love it, I guarantee!
Absolute poetry, stunning!.......2002-05-11
This movie is a rare combination - it is beautiful, poetic, witty and also brutally real. SHADOW BOXERS takes you inside the boxer's world and pulls no punches. It is the best, most original documentary I have ever seen.
Powerful,exciting and uplifting...it's one of a kind!.......2002-04-19
I was truely impressed by this film. I'm not even a boxing fan, but I heard so many good things, I had to check it out for myself. I was hooked from the minute it began. The film is beautifully shot and edited and the music is both soulful and pumping, like the movie itself which switches from the harsh realities of the sport to the poetic underside. And the women portrayed in Shadow Boxers are so unstereotypical, they are smart, thoughtful, sometimes funny, honest and most surprising of all, great boxers, especially the champion Lucia Rijker. These women are not who I expected to see when I thought of women's boxing. I want my daugthers and my son to see Shadow Boxers because this movie has a positive message that I find rare in movies today.
My hat's off to the director for having the guts to make a movie with a strong, positive message and to depict these women especially the stunning knock-out artist Lucia Rijker, with such dignity and power. There is not a weak character in this film, and that's a refreshing change. I know I will never even get close to the ring, but after Shadow Boxers, I found myself dancing around my kitchen and throwing punches in the air.
Even if you never have dreams of stepping into the ring, as long as you have dreams of any kind, this movie will inspire you.
-Peace
More a promotional piece than a documentary.......2002-04-06
Recently, more and more women are entering the sport of boxing, competing with vigor on a turf that was formerly restricted to men. A rising star in this arena is Dutch boxer Lucia Rijker and this film focussed on her. We see her training. We hear accolades from important people in the boxing profession. And we listen to her philosophy -- "Because you can get hit, because you can get hurt, because you can get knocked down. It's like real life."
Most of the film shows her in matches and the audience sees her extraordinary strength and focus over and over again, almost feeling those powerful punches. We can appreciate the breakthroughs she and others like her have made and see that the sport of women's boxing is growing. For this view into this special world, the film succeeds. However, I found myself bored. Even a documentary needs dramatic tension and that was lacking here. I couldn't root for her because it was obvious she was winning every fight. And, except for a brief interview with her and her Dutch-speaking mother, we really did not get to know her. In this way the film seemed more of a promotional piece than a documentary.
Ms. Rijker speaks perfect English and expresses herself well. She now lives in Los Angeles but I yearned for some more background. With her dark hair and slightly African or Indian features, I found myself thinking about her ethnic heritage and hoped for a few words about that. Basically, I wanted more depth because the highlights of one boxing bout after another just doesn't do it for me. The film is short, only 72 minutes. It needed more time to explore and intrigue. If you are particularly interested in women's boxing, you might like this film. But I can only give a lukewarm recommendation to a film that literally put me to sleep.
