Back when Jack Nicholson was a Hollywood unknown appearing in Roger Corman quickies such as Crybaby Killer and Little Shop of Horrors, it wasn't unusual for Corman to make a movie in just a few days. That was the case with this nifty little thriller, which was filmed in just three days using the same sets that Corman had used in his Boris Karloff thriller The Raven, which Corman had finished ahead of schedule. In fact, the sets were being torn down almost as fast as Corman could film them, but that hasn't stopped this moody little gem from acquiring a modicum of cult status over the years. Karloff plays the alleged baron of an isolated castle on the Baltic coast, where a Napoleonic officer (played by Nicholson!) appears after becoming intrigued by the presence of a mysterious and beautiful woman. Karloff's baron has a dark history, of course, and creepy atmosphere makes up for the minimal plot, which makes The Terror a vintage treat for horror fans. --Jeff Shannon

Sleeper Cell: American Terror is so consistently excellent that the series' cancellation seems woefully premature. Citing budgetary costs and the popularity of newer shows (like Weeds), executives at Showtime ended the series after this superb second season, which benefits from its limited 8-episode run by maintaining a riveting combination of brisk pacing, intelligent plotting, and an admirably meaningful effort to explore the true nature of Muslim faith. For posterity, both seasons of Sleeper Cell will gain lasting value for their astute and illuminating depiction of Islamic devotion on both sides of the battle against radical Islamic terrorism. In this regard, American Terror is even better than the first season, as it deepens our understanding of the religious and philosophical differences between undercover FBI agent Darwyn Al-Sayeed (Michael Ealy) and Farik (Oded Fehr), the radical Islamic terrorist (with connections to Al-Qaeda) who continues to mastermind attacks on American soil. As American Terror begins, Farik is enduring brutal torture at the hands of his American captors while Darwyn, still undercover, is pretending to lead a new sleeper cell consisting of a former Latino gang member (Kevin Alejandro) who became an extremist in prison; a closeted gay Iraqi ex-patriot (Omid Abtahi) raised in London; and a Dutch nanny (Thekla Rueten) with personal reasons for hating America.
While Farik's former right-hand-man Ilija (Henri Lubatti) struggles in vain to return to a quiet, normal life, American Terror takes all of its characters into darker, more dangerous territory, and heightened realism gives the series even greater emotional impact as unexpected tragedies befall several supporting characters. While Ealy and Fehr continue to anchor the series with their finely nuanced performances, these episodes ultimately lead to a powerful finale that, in many respects, returns Darwyn to where he began--with potentially greater threats looming in his future. While Fox TV's 24 favors nonstop action and increasingly implausible plotting, Sleeper Cell: American Terror presents a frighteningly authentic scenario that honors Islam while demonstrating how it's been perverted by radicals with evil intentions. Because the second season has a cliffhanger ending that may never be resolved, it's a pity the series wasn't allowed to continue, and the DVD extras offer minimal compensation: They consist of "Infiltrating the Final Cell," an interesting interview between Ealy and two of Sleeper Cell's FBI consultants; "The Enemy Within" (a first-season recap); and "Farik's Story," a pointless 90-minute assembly of nearly all of Oded Fehr's scenes from American Terror. Why bother, when it's all better viewed in the context of the episodes? --Jeff Shannon
Description
In SLEEPER CELL: AMERICAN TERROR, the Muslim undercover FBI agent, Darwyn (Michael Ealy), discovers that another terrorist cell in Southern California is planning a catastrophic attack that will be more successful than the last attempt. Meanwhile, Farik escapes out of the country and directs another terrorist operation, beginning a parallel storyline between Southern California and the Middle East.

OK Show but could have been a great show .......2007-06-18
I just finished watching Sleeper Cell - American terror and it was OK it had the potential to be a great show, but the story with one of the characters changed everything. I will admit the ending was great, it left you to wonder whats going to happen next. I would have gave this show 5 stars and suggest to everyone to buy the dvd, but I would suggest not buying this dvd because they decided to have a gay character on the show and having that character on the show was pointless, and for everyone who saw the first season and enjoyed every moment when you watch the second season, beware your gonna see some scenes that your not gonna like.
Sleeper Cell - American Terror - The Complete Second Season.......2007-05-12
At first i wasnt sure about this show in the first season of the show. My brother had recommended it because he said it was really good. As the episodes went on i realized that to. This show in many ways is even better then 24 just because of the reality of the issues... It shows the struggle inside islam between the true islam of peace and love (the fbi agent muslim trying to stop them), and the extremists who claim they are muslims ( the terrorists), and the struggle with the image of islam in the west, as well as what our country is going through at the moment. In the end the plot, actors, and everything else are great and keep you interested until the very end. I cant wait for the next season.
A bad ending to an excellent series.......2007-05-12
Honestly, the first season kept me up everynight after work untill I finished a disk but this season was very, very disapointing. Homosexuality is not something I'm real uncomfortable with but the needlessness of the multiple encounters was very disturbing. Also, the finale was a big let down. Should have left something open for fans instead of.....Well, you'll see if you actually want to see it. I wish I hadn't bought it. Good Luck.
This is a good fix for 24 fans.......2007-05-07
Don't get me wrong, sleeper cell is no 24. However, if you like 24, Alias and Prison Break type shows, this is a good one to buy. My husband and I really prefer to purchase the DVD, as opposesd to watching the show each week. It makes for a fun rainy weekend marathon. Plus, who wants to wait an entire week, when there is a cliff hanger. Speaking of cliff hangers, you might also like The Shield. Sleeper Cell is good terrorist fun.
Music comment.......2007-04-20
This show features excellent music.
If anyone can identify the songs in season 2, episode 3 ("Torture") at 21:11 (something like "Breathe out so I can breathe you in") and 30:30 I will paypal you $20.
Thanks!

Anne Frank: The Whole Story delivers exactly what it promises: the incredibly moving complete story of Anne Frank, going beyond what the Jewish teenage girl wrote in her widely read diary. Anne, along with her family and friends of her family, hid in a secret annex behind her father's office in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of Holland. She dutifully kept a diary, which became a worldwide bestseller when her father published it in the 1950s. The story has been adapted for television and movies before, but this version, which played on ABC television, moves beyond what Anne wrote, meeting up with the Frank family before Anne receives her diary, and following her past the diary's last entries into Auschwitz and Birkenau. Hannah Taylor Gordon is a superb Anne, bringing to life the multifaceted girl, in turns intelligent, dreamy, creative, spoiled, and bratty, a girl like any other except that Anne is a Jew in Nazi-occupied Holland. The only one who outshines Gordon is Ben Kingsley as Anne's father, Otto Frank. His quiet performance is extraordinarily powerful; as he watches his family slip away, it is impossible not to feel his grief. This brave film is difficult in parts to watch--the concentration camp scenes are brutal--but this is a remarkable adaptation of Anne's life, and it is a film to be shared and discussed and remembered. --Jenny Brown
Description
Ben Kingsley, Brenda Blethyn, and Hannah Taylor Gordon star in the stirring tale of one of the most influential young women of the 20th century. Based on Melissa Muller's critically acclaimed book, ANNE FRANK goes beyond the story you already know and paints the true portrait of Anne both before and after she went into hiding. Get to know the high-spirited and popular girl before the war, and experience the challenges of the brave people who risked their lives trying to keep her safe. ANNE FRANK also explores the enduring mystery of who betrayed the Frank family and reveals what happened next.

Education Review.......2007-06-27
I used this movie for my 8th grade class and they loved it. The only problem is that you have to manually edit it as there is a nudity scene as they are in the concentration camp. This movie gives a new perspective to the students of Anne Frank after they have read her diary. I thought it was a great movie.

Anne Frank - The Whole Story.......2007-05-07
Excellent DVD - my son watched it in school and was so touched by it that he wanted to whole family to watch it. It was very moving. A great DVD.
The most compelling movie ever ?.......2007-03-27
I recently read the book, and then bought the DVD straight afterwards. Seeing Ben Kingsley's name on the credits brought me hope that his inclusion would enhance the film...but I was not prepared for the stunning, moving, and totally compelling piece of movie making i was to see. I must admit my heart sank, when I read it was a Disney production, but full marks to them for such an undertaking, so magnifically produced.
The locations and scenery were totally believable from Anne's flawless descriptions, and the acting from all concerned totally breathtaking. The way that clips from original war scenes were included only served to enhance the belief that one was living it as in a documentary.
The young actress , playing Anne, only fourteen years old, but bringing out a stunning performance that belied her young age.Hannah Taylor - Gordon gave her all in a range of emotions that showed Anne to be a normal teenage girl, with all her doubts, fears, dreams and intentions placed in a totally restrictive situation, as when in hiding, and in adesperate savage situation as when in the concentration camps...she deserves total praise for her role.
Her totally devoted father..Ben Kingsley, played his part as the middle class, reserved parent with total professionalism..his breaking down at the end of the film, was heartwrenching. Anne's slightly repressed mother..always doing the "right thing", was splendidly portrayed by Brenda Blethyn..and all the other characters played their parts so believably.
The film follows the story of anne , from her carefree days, with her school friends to the bitter end..and I cannot say I have seen a film that moved me so much, in all my 56 years. To think that Anne Frank died only two weeks before the British liberated the camp at Belsen - Birkenau , totally breaks my heart...and moves me to view the film again in a different light...if only !!!!!

This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in
School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in Nacho Libre he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, Nacho Libre just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. --Daniel Vancini
Description
Jack Black is at his comic best as Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnacion.

great fun.......2007-06-27
This movie is hilarious, from beginning to end. It's so much fun to watch I had to get it for my Husband for Father's Day. He loved it. Makes us laugh just thinking about it. This is a must own.
GOSH DARN FRIGGIN' FUNNY!.......2007-06-13
This movie made me laugh my butt off, I even laughed so hard in the CORN-THROWING part, friggin' heck'a funny! Anyway, the picture is good but not at its best. More like 6 or 7 out of 10. But I can see more detail than on DVD that I didn't noice it in first place until I watched the HD-DVD version on my Optoma HD70 projector on 25 ft widescreen, yep! on XBOX 360 add-on HD-DVD drive. And the sound... sound pretty good, I enjoyed some funny music and singing is kinda a goofball in a good way! Good movie for family, I got this HD-DVD brand new for [...]vand its was friggin' worth it!
Funny Movie.......2007-06-12
If you like Jack Black or Napolean Dynamite you will love this movie. It's FUNNY!
Chancho, I need to barrow some sweats!.......2007-05-28
Admittedly I did not voluntarily watch this film. Instead I was forced by my brother-in-law who swore it would be funny. Even after the first viewing I was only mildly entertained. I have no idea how I ended up watching the film again, undoubtedly by my sneaky brother-in-law, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the film I had previously not cared for. Slowly but surly I have watched the film several times over, always accompanied by my husband who absolutely loved the film. In fact, it is large part due to his constant mimicking of the film that I probably now find so much humor in it. How very Monty Python of him!
dreary.......2007-05-03
What can I say? I have looked through the other reviews and can hardly disagree with the consensus. Therefore I will unnecessarily write yet another review that will simply repeat everything that's already been said.
Yes, what a slog. Though a fan of Jack Black, I was both shocked and saddened to see him in this tedious tripe.
I suppose the script's premise must have seemed a lot more hilarious on paper than it turned out to be once they hitched Black up in those turquoise tights.
There are very few laughs. I think in large part this is because Black is harnessed: forced to deliver all his lines through his clenched and rigid Mexican accent.
But whatever your theory is, you gotta agree: there are very few laughs.

Might one day be in 3D for DVD..........2007-05-02
I saw this in the theater at age 12 and again numerous times on video. The main reason that this movie has not been released in a 3D format for home video, is that the movie was released in a polarized 3D format, rather than the old red/green or red/blue format that works on television sets. One lens in the movie glasses was polarized vertically and the other horizontally (a la Universal and Disney theme-park 3D movies). This particular effect is currently impossible to re-create even on HD televisions because of the horizontal scanning that makes the tv images. It could be converted into a red/green format for DVD, but Universal is unlikely to shell out the money for a conversion, which would likely take over a year of labor by an FX team. Also, that's assuming that the Left and Right film masters still exist as seperate films. Even at age 12 in 1983, I was unimpressed by much of the film, one redeeming factor being that the shark was so darn huge [35 ft]. I didn't like the use of stop-motion near the end, something Spielberg avoided at all costs in the original. Holding out for the slim chance of a Red/Green 3D conversion before I buy, as I have all the others on DVD.
This movie put the Jaws franchise on life-support.......2007-04-23
This is the point where the Jaws movies officially lost its credibility. It was already pretty shaky after Jaws 2 but this is the moment when the series jumped shark (no pun intended). Through herculian efforts, I convinced myself that what happened in Jaws 2 was possible because maybe the shark in the first one had a girlfriend/boyfriend shark nearby. But a supermassive great white terrorizing the Brody family for a third time?
It's worth noting that this film probably contains a scene or two that have arguably the worst special effects of the whole Jaws series (including Jaws the Revenge). The one that comes to mind is when the shark breaks through the glass and floods the place in the underwater city at the end of the movie. It is not just bad, it is breathtakingly bad. When the shark hits the glass it comes to a complete stop even though the glass it hits has just been shattered into tiny pieces. Imagine throwing a baseball at a window causing it to completely shatter but the ball miraculously does not go through the window. That's the logic that this movie expects you to believe.
One of the few nice things I can say about this movie is that it could have been worse (as Jaws the Revenge proved). And there were some things that I liked: I thought the little (by its standards) baby great white was cute and the dolphins were awesome. But these small elements that I enjoyed are few and far between.
I'll admit that when I was young I must have watched this movie many times. But now that I'm older I've regretted spending so much time watching these movies that made money JUST by their title and little else. They're a waste of time and money and I strongly urge anyone seriously considering buying this to look elsewhere. Stay out of the water and stay away from this.
Jaws 3 was much better than Jaws 2.......2007-04-23
I'm surprised by the number of bad reviews posted here for Jaws 3. I've seen all of the Jaws movies many times and I my favorites are Jaws and Jaws 3. I thought Jaws 2 and Jaws Revenge were unbelievably stupid. Face it, the last half of Jaws 2 is basically just a bunch of screaming kids. Jaws 3 is entertaining just by the fact that it's filmed at Seaworld. It has many scary scenes and some cool effects. Namely, the part of the movie showing an underwater glass bottom walk-way of the theme park where people are walking and sharks are lurking nearby.
The shark jumped the shark........2007-04-06
This is not worth writing about. Dennis Quaid is a good actor, but a poor choice of movie to be associated with.
If you want to watch a bad movie, then watch this one.
This movie fails!.......2007-03-06
1,2, and 4 are best leave out 3. Why is the title named Jaws 3-D? Where are the 3-D glasses? I mean the effects are just horrible. I enjoy the rest of the series but this one is just boring. They should re-release this movie in theater with 3-D glasses and I would probably give this movie a good rating but for now this movie just sucks.

Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Legendary producer / director Dan Curtis (DARK SHADOWS, THE NIGHT STALKER) teams up with writers Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN, BURNT OFFERINGS) to present three tales of horrific suspense in this made-for-television anthology that also showcases the tremendous acting talent of Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST), who plays no less than four distinct roles. In "Julie," an aggressive college student seduces and ultimately blackmails his seemingly shy English professor. In "Millicent and Therese," two polar-opposite sisters become increasingly hell-bent on the undoing of one another. And in "Amelia," a woman falls prey to a murderous Zuni fetish doll.

Tour-de-force for Karen Black........2007-06-23
A fondly remembered cult classic televison movie produced in 1975. A must have for fans of good story telling and of course admirers of the excellent Karen Black. The audio commentary is both informative and entertaining and the featurettes with Karen and Richard Matheson are top-knotch. Fantastic print.
Trilogy of Terror is classic stuff.......2007-06-01
I watched this growing up as a kid.Channel 9 and 11 played this late at night. That Fetish doll was a hoot! All three storie were good but the last one was the best.If you want to see more of the dolls check out Attack of the Beast Creatures. This one, there's an entire island full of them.
Fun.......2007-06-01
I remembered this movie from when I was a kid and got such a kick out of watching it again. Didn't scare me the way I remembered, but fun!
Trilogy of Terror.......2007-05-13
I had been waiting for this one to become available on DVD for quite some time. It was well worth the wait! My grown daughter remembers seeing this movie when she was a child, and is delighted to finally own it. Some of my friends had never seen or heard of this movie; but when I shared it with them, they loved it! The kids particularly loved the segment with the doll. Ms. Black delivered 3 excellent performances! The Karen Black commentary and featurette are nice bonuses.
Great TV movie from the 70s.......2007-02-22
The African zulu doll segment is worth buying this DVD for. I remember seeing this TV movie as a kid back in the 70s. There are others TV movies I am looking for: 79 Park Avenue (miniseries), Sweet Hostage with Linda Blair, Wonder Woman with Cathy Lee Crosby.

IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE: Original Theatrical Trailer
Customer Reviews:
SLIMY,ALIEN 50s SCI FI At Its Best.......2007-05-07
These two 50s Sci-Fi flicks are similiar to many of this era. Good acting beautiful women n nice cars. Monsters are not real scary but both have good story lines. MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD stars TIM HOLT (Treasure Of The Sierra Madre) Story is filmed in Southern Caliornia around a series of Canals. The Giant Worms start in THE SALTON SEA and migrate into the inner water canals. Story moves along at a good pace with a good ending. Recommend the film for a very good sample of 50S SCI-Fi at its best. IT the other film in the 2 disc set was a original film the ever popular ALIEN films in the 70s were base on.This is a good two disc set an I highly recommend both of them.
excellent 50s sci-fi, quite scary if clunky effects.......2007-02-15
These were two of the scariest films I saw as a kid, genuine late-night TV fun at sleepovers. I was totally engrossed in them, tho on re-viewing them I didn't quite feel the same as I did 40 years ago. While Monster is a pretty typcial, well, monster flick, it has lots of funny twists - mutunts (with radiation thorwn in), good heros, and a suspenseful plot. The one that really got me was IT, this mysterious alien that sneaks on a rocket. It duels with the crew, picking them off one by one: in many ways, it is almost the same film as Alien, but much scarier to me at the age I was if less slick. There are really wonderful films, with memories from my past. Thus, I wd recommend them for 50s nostalgia and xcellent on their own if you can get beyond the old-style effects.
IT! The Terror From Beyond Space.......2006-12-10
Edward Garea did an excellent review about this wonderful old film on April 4th, 2006. There is not much I can say, but I just want to share my thoughts. To start, this is a wonderful old black and white "B" horror film from the 1950's. I can not understand why we never see these old films on TV. I see many old black and white films on AMC and really enjoy them, but most I've never heard of. I recall when growing up, sitting up to the wee hours of the morning, waiting with anticipation, for these wonderful movies to come on. In our area, Double Chiller Theatre came on at 11:30 each Saturday night and I begged my mother to let me sit up and watch these movies. Two movies would be shown and I recall my favorites were, "House On Haunted Hill". "War of the Colassal Beast", "I Was A Teenage Werewolf", "The Werewolf" and "It,The Terror From Beyond Space". In my opinion, it is sad that the kids of today do not care for, or appreciate these wonderful old films. I only hope that more of the "B" horror films are released soon on DVD. Let's face it, once our generation is gone, nobody will care about these wonderful old films.
Great Sci-Fi 50s Double Feature.......2006-04-05
It's always a pleasure when the B-movies of our childhood are released onto DVD. We don't see these little gems anymore on television (even though we have over 100 channels), mainly, I think, because they are in black and white and this is a color TV world.
But these are the films we stayed up on countless Saturday nights to see and they remain with us psychotronic fans as a most pleasant memory. This MGM Midnite Movies entry is a perfect example, as we find that we enjoy these films all over again. Now, if we can only get the kids to sit still for black and white.
The first movie "The Monster That Challenged the World" (1957)is an intelligently thought out little picture. Mysterious disappearances are occurring in the Salton Sea. Tim Holt (Remember him from "treasure of the Sierra Madre"?) and scientist Hans Conreid (Uncle Tounoose from "Make Room for Daddy") investigate and discover that an earthquake has freed prehistoric mollusks. If not stopped, they will overrun the environment. The movie moves at a brisk pace and has several good chills. Look for character actor Milton Parsons in a small role as the county archivist.
"It! The Terror from Outer Space" (1958) is a better movie than one would suspect from the title. In the year 1973 (!) a ship is sent to Mars to rescue the survivors of a previous manned excursion. Of that original crew, only Marshall Thompson is left alive. Circumstantial evidence has him pegged as the killer, but as the crew soon learns, a Martian stowaway is responsible and will kill this crew if nothing is done to stop it. Intelligently scripted by Jerome Bixby (who wrote a few "Star Trek" and "Outer Limits" episodes in the 60s), the picture always keeps us involved. The acting is also solid, with Thompson, Dabbs Greer, and Ray "Crash" Corrigan in the monster suit. It may be of some interest that the film was remade by Ridley Scott in a fashion as "Alien."
All in all, a most pleasant evening at a bargain price.

what a really good re-make..........2007-04-22
this was actually a really good re-make of the original. i'm pretty sure you will recognize the black guy from the original movie. they stay pretty much to the same script as the original but you'll want to see it anyway just to see what else happens.
if you are a "BABYLON 5" fan like i am you might recognize on of the cast members in the movie. i haven't seen it in quite sometime and i just recently ordered it from amazon. i'm looking forward to seeing it again.
"They are coming to get you, BARBARA!!"... the movie that started all the zombie movies ever to come. if you want to see also another good one, the idea for this movie came from another movie with Vincent Price called "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH".
it also deserves a viewing if you are a ZOMBIE fan like me! for anyone who hasn't seen even the original movie of "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" where have you been?? rotting in a coffin or something??
enjoy!
CMH
A worthy remake that entertained me from start to finish. A solid popcorn movie........2007-04-21
I loved the original movie and this version isn't half-bad. I don't think it's worth commenting on what actually happens in the movie. If you have seen or read about the original Night of the Living Dead you know, more or less, what happens.
It cleans up the visual and audio problems of the original. There is less wooden acting. Let's not forget that the 1969 version was, afterall, made by amateurs. Also, this version has some nice twists to it and there is some subtle humor. What happens to the snaky "Cooper" at the end of the movie will have you roaring with laughter.
What prevents this from being a "great" film is that it follows the original too closely and there are a few moments where the story doesn't seem to unfold naturally because it's trying to hard to be consistent with the 1969 one. But, like I say, some things happen slightly differently. Perhaps the biggest change from the original is that "Barbara" is no longer a helpless female in need of protection from the men. By the film's end, she reminded me of the heroine Sigorney Weaver from the Alien series. She's a natural zombie killer!
I'm giving it 4 and 1/2 stars only because there's no way it deserves to be on par with the original which gets 5 stars. Still, it's a very entertaining movie and I highly recommend that horror fans get it.
Same Idea, Different "Night" ..........2007-04-09
Romero fans, be prepared for a few radical changes ... hopefully you can view them as reflective of a new era and not as an assault on the 1968 original (that Romero was an executive producer and had a hand in revising the script should help)!!
No longer is Barbara the catatonic, ineffectual "zombie" that she was in the 1968 version: now she has a riffle and a meat tenderizer ... and she knows how to use them BOTH!! Other alterations abound! (I am omitting the juicy stuff so as not to spoil your discovery!!) For instance, as Johnnie (as spelled at IMDB) and Barbara approach the cemetery, it is revealed that the siblings' mother is dead ... not the father. Why is this interesting? As explained in Tony Williams text The Cinema of George A. Romero: Knight of the Living Dead, "[the original deals with] domination and possession on many levels. An unseen mother manipulates Johnny and Barbara into performing a ritual neither of them shows any real feeling for" (22). A curious alteration since it is the focus of much speculation! What does this reveal about the current roles of mothers and fathers?
As a zombie fan, you probably enjoy all the minutia as much as I ... especially when it involves social commentary. Therefore, you will enjoy the commentary on modern "craftsmanship" in this version. When Ben realizes that the old farmhouse is being remodeled, he despairs. Tommy is perplexed until Ben easily puts his fist through the new door ... so poorly made. Only by retrieving the old "ugly" doors can the enclave proper steel themselves against the "zed word." Very clever!! It's a small but fun detail:D And, seriously, hearing the line "Yeah, they're dead, they're all messed up" once again ... well, that's just priceless!!
While all the acting is excellent, Tony Todd is a shining star ... not too many actors could succeed in bringing the original role "new life," but Todd does so with zest. He has easily earned his status as a horror-film icon!! (The "Final Destination," trilogy, the "Candyman" trilogy, "Wishmaster," "X-Files," etc... EPIC ACTOR!!)
A note on a minor coincidence that only a horror-enthusiast can appreciate: at 11:44 minutes watch for Tony Todd (Ben) to emerge from the car with a crow-bar. An extreme close-up of the crow-bar in his hand looks like a giant hook ... a la Tony Todd's role in "Candyman." Yes, I know Rose's "Candyman" was released in 1992 and this was released in 1990 ... like I said, it's just a neat coincidence;)
Watch this film if you love zombies, want to be a zombie, have a friend who is a zombie, or are interested in zombie-rights.

Enjoyable - Just don't take too seriously.......2007-04-04
I suppose it's all been said, but I'll give it a shot. :)
First, the (decidedly amateur) comments:
Having seen all the Romero flicks and enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake, I would have to place this movie somewhere beneath these previous flicks. The makeup effects I can't fault; much better than the original. But, of course, effects do not a great movie make. The acting was all right for the most part, but a bit stilted at times; I think the leading lady was trying too hard to be rough and tough. I much prefer the efforts of someone like Sigourney Weaver, who managed to maintain her character's humanity realistically through the "crisis moments."
Okay, enough bellyaching. All in all, I'm still glad I bought this movie; I freely admit to being a zombie fan, so I guess you should take that into account. I see it as a fond "tip of the hat" to the master. It follows, for the most part, the tried and true formula of the original script; a true remake, I think, rather than a "reimagining," which puts it in a different class than the new "Dawn." I guess this is mostly what I'd expect Romero to try out if he had it in mind to "do it over again." I just think he'd do it better, that's all.
If you like the "Dead" films, do try it out. At the very least, it will inspire you to revisit the classic and see it in a new way. Just try not to over-analyze it; not much social commentary here beyond the most basic.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. ;)

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.... Based on the classic novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, this magnificently-photographed three-hour tour charts the tortuous and tragic course of the Bounty, which, in 1787, sailed from England to Tahiti on a "grocer's errand" to transplant breadfruit plants in Jamaica. As the voyage progresses, tensions mount between the heartless disciplinarian Captain Bligh (a commanding Trevor Howard) and his chief officer, Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando), who does not subscribe to Bligh's philosophy that cruelty with cause is not cruelty. Richard Harris costars as John Mills, an abused crewmember who plants the seeds of treason against Bligh. Mutiny on the Bounty is a see-worthy saga that boasts a provocative Brando performance (his Christian is initially so foppish he makes Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow look like Errol Flynn in The Sea Hawk) and great action set pieces (a raging storm as the Bounty attempts to navigate Cape Horn). And in how many did this film inspire dreams of sailing away to Tahiti? Brando was among them. He married his ravishing costar Tarita, and later bought himself a French Polynesian island. This "Special Edition" replicates the film's original prestigious road show presentation, complete with Overture, Intermission, Entr'acte, and Exit music. --Donald Liebenson

Greatest Sea Story at it's Greatest.......2007-05-31
Having read the trilogy of books regarding the 'Bounty', not to mention many other historical accounts of the voyage, having spent over a year building its model out of wood, and having seen all three of the major production films, I consider myself to be bit of an expert on the subject of the Bounty. There is no doubt that this version of the movie is the finest. Brando captures the character of Christian just as one would imagine it to be, displaying a mixture of wisdom, sensitivity, wit, and toughness that Gibson and Gable can't match. Just like Connery is 'the James Bond', so too is Brando 'the Fletcher Christian'. Similarly, Trevor Howard plays the most accurate Bligh with a look that is convincingly right out of Nelson's navy, and an accurately menacing and unforgiving personna. And the scene where the Tahitians put on their dance, with the hauntingly beautiful drum beat, is simply not done better in any other film. You should watch all three film versions of this story as they all have their merits. But you will keep coming back to this one and that is what having this DVD is all about!
Pretty Good Movie until the very End.......2007-05-12
I like Marlon Brando as an actor. He's made a few turkeys in his career but there's no doubt that the man was a talented actor. In "Mutiny on the Bounty" I saw an opportunity for a really great movie because the story of the Bounty has been a favorite of mine since I read the "Classics Illustrated" comic book version of the trilogy (as a kid, of course). Although I was somewhat taken aback at Brando's appearance as a "dandy", I thought he did a good job as Fletcher Christian as did Trevor Howard as Captain Bligh. The bantering between each other was part of the excellence of the film. The rest of the cast was obviously chosen with care as well. The cinematography, the Tahitian location, the depiction of life at sea, all kept my interest even though the movie must have run about three hours.
My problem with this version of "Mutiny on the Bounty" had to do with the use of those three hours and the historically clumsy way the movie ended. Although the crux of the movie is obviously found in its' title, there were two other stories of that historical event of great interest as well. One was the amazing sea journey of the castaways (those that didn't mutiny) and the other was the il-fated future of the mutineers themselves. The first was merely hinted at while the second culminated in a dramatic act of moral courage that, historically, never even ocurred. I'll leave it to the viewers to discover for themselves what to make of the ending but, in my opinion, the truth told a much greater moral tale of what happens when orderly society is replaced with an aimless existance. There is much to be learned and bemoaned about those that found their way to Pitcairn Island. It is the real tragedy of the Bounty's fate; not the made-for-Hollywood substitution. Somewhere in those three hours a good director (and film editor) might have found a way to tell it.
Brando's "Mutiny on the Bounty".......2007-04-05
I am pleased to see this movie complete on a DVD since I saw it on the big screen in Sydney in 1963. I have it as a wide screen 2-video set (NTSC format) which is not available in PAL, and have enjoyed it every time I sat and spent the nearly 3 hours watching it. There are a number of sequences on the islands which were obviously deleted for the video because they tended to repeat themselves, for example, there are more dancing and fishing scenes. I couldn't seen any extra bits dealing with the action on the "Bounty".
The deleted prologue and epilogue included as extras along with the documentaries of the version of the Bounty" built for the movie are very interesting, even if some of the documentaries repeat themselves in places.
I enjoyed finally seeing Marlin Brando's "Mutiny on the Bounty" finally in all its glory.
"You'll not put your foot on me again!".......2007-02-02
The 1962 "Mutiny on the Bounty" remains a strikingly good film. The script may not be historically accurate, but it packs a powerful dramatic punch. The build-up in tension between Brando's Fletcher Christian and Trevor Howard's Captain Bligh is superbly sustained until it explodes in the mutiny itself. There are many wonderfully crafted scenes - the crew being met at Tahiti, Bligh's hints to Christian that he should woo the king's daughter, (and Christian's pretended bewilderment), the Tahitian dancing (and Bligh's clumsy attempt to join in) and Christian's romance with Maimiti, to say nothing of the adrenalin-rush when Fletcher Christian finally snaps. The star-studded cast never fails to deliver, and the wonderful scenery of Tahiti and Pitcairn Island takes us into a world we may never have seen quite like this. The music has a big cinematic sound that still works. "The Bounty" was specially constructed - a complete, full-size replica. Lewis Milestone, famous for many great films going back to "All Quiet on the Western Front" (in 1930!) directed this film, which received a swag of academy award nominations - but no oscars (what a year - it was up against "Lawrence of Arabia", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Longest Day"). This DVD includes extras which are of some interest, including scenes originally (and rightly) excluded from the film showing the finding of the Pitcairn Islanders many years later. A great film.
Mutiny on the Bounty (Two-Disc Special Edition).......2007-01-12
Mutiny on the Bounty is a classic film. This movie is a must for any Marlon Brando fan.

The expression "an ugly drunk" takes on a whole new meaning when the thirsty crew of an American deep-sea mining station investigates a mysteriously capsized, Russian wreck and brings back some experimental vodka that turns the unlucky imbiber into a plasma-craving fish creature. (Has there ever been a better reason for abstinence?) Although this "Aliens meets 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" story doesn't add anything new to the classic horror and sci-fi formulas that it so obviously borrows from, it's a fun monster film all the same, with impressive, gnarly effects, a better-than-expected cast (Peter Weller and a scene-stealing Ernie Hudson are the standouts), and an insanely detailed production design by Alien veteran Ron Cobb. Director George P. Cosmatos went on to direct Tombstone. --Andrew Wright

leviathan.......2007-03-15
GOOD SCI-FI FLICK UPDATING VIDEO COLLECTION HAD IT ON VHS AND WANTED IT ON DVD.
Leviathan.......2007-01-10
Again, not up to par with todays special effects, but really good all the same. I'm a sucker for the horror movies of the 80's and early 90's. I have to put this one above Deep Star Six, although that was a terrific movie also. Leviathan will have you jumping and scared.
I like this movie.......2007-01-09
People in a mine the people make up the seamonster. One person get sick, one by one everyone is sick, just like the box that sixpack finds in a sunkon ship.
Silly and funny underwater version of "Alien" that still works.......2006-11-16
Coming in the late 1980s with all the momentum sprung from the "Alien" original and first repeat, "Leviathan" sought to take the alien model underwater, where a group of trash collectors fights on-board monsters with saws and flamethrowers.
The producers of this film knew a good model when they found it and obviously allowed the audience to laugh at their copycat ways by creating aliens that alternately look like tongues with teeth and moving intestines. There's also a paean to the real "Alien" near the end that Peter Weller does away with by squishing it's head in an elevator shaft.
And, in the final scene, you won't believe how hokey and stupid this kind of movie could be just a few years before the advent on high tech and high gloss computerization became de riguer in this type of thing. It's worth it to sit through the whole thing just to see that unbelievably dumb final scene.
Weller "starred" in this vehicle two years after his biggest hit, 1987's "RoboCop". This didn't do much for his reputation even though the cast included some great eye candy in Amanda Pays and the steely blue eyes of Meg Foster. A solid supporting cast headed by the great Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudson and Hector Elizondo offer a high level of acting credibility.
Still, they can't make sense of this mishmash which, oddly and fantastically, still works as horror. Leonard Maltin says to, "Skip it" on this one but I'd disagree. I think there's enough humor, whether intentional or unintentional, eye candy, schlock horror and fine acting to give you your money's worth. It didn't work as a big release in the theater but it's pretty good entertainment on a Tuesday night on your home system.
Beware of the latex leg...........2006-05-27
Plot synapsis: Underwater mining rig, day 87 of a 90 day tour, goof-off sexist jerk wanders off and finds a sunken Russian freighter.
The cast consists of Peter Weller as the geologist boss, Richard Crenna as the semi-doctor and crewed by Ernie Hudson (who gets some of the best lines and steals his scenes), Amanda Pays (and her annoyingly fake accent) Daniel Stern, Michael Carmine, an adorable Lisa Eilbacher, Meg Foster (what IS it about her eyes? And why was she trying so hard to do a crappy acting job?), and the wonderful Hector Elizondo.
After ALIEN did the haunted house in space so successfully there were a lot of immitators. Then we had a few underwater adventures which did fairly well in a vauge sort of way. Think of this as a cheap way of combining both. Except for Pays and Foster, we have a group of really fine actors working in an underwater mining facility.
Personal note: Seriously, if this had been real and I was Pays' charactor I would have severly hurt the Stern character. His behavior was borish to the point of distracting from the movie and something no decent boss would have allowed.
Anyway, the movie cover said the magic words: GENETIC MUTATION! I was hooked, as always. Pays and Stern are outside doing their job when Stern wanders off (why?) and falls off a cliff. Movie goers probably cheered at that point. Pays goes after him, wandering through fakey looking sea worms and finds the Russian freighter. I liked the scary fish that pops up in Pays' face. Stern shows up with a huge safe, carrying it like it weighs 20 pounds instead of several hundred and they head back.
The safe contains a lot of 'personal effects' from deceased crewmembers which should have triggered a lot more concern than it did. Sterns character slips out a flask of vodka and hides it. Eilbacher's character sees him do it, and later talks him into sharing it with her. Because of the extreme danger of the job, alcohol is not permitted there.
Eventually the Crenna figures out the Russians were doing GENETIC EXPERIMENTATION (I love this stuff) on it's own crew by doctoring their vodka. By the time Crenna comes up with that of course, Stern and Eilbacher are already infected. It hits Stern first, and hardest, then things begin getting out of control.
Up to this point the movie does quite well. It's best effects were, unfortunately, the ones you don't see, using shadow and noise. As good as the cast mostly was, the sets, the production, etc., the special effects were really substandard. Or to put it another way, they were just cheesy and bad, a jarring note to an otherwise interesting movie.
There was not a lot of new material here, nothing terribly original, but it is still not bad. Flawed by it's special effects, surely, but some good acting and a decent script saves it from being a B movie.

Kirsten Dunst stars as plucky teen niece to Steve Guttenberg in this 1997 telefilm that sets out to provide background for one of Disney/MGM Studios' popular thrill-rides, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Guttenberg plays Buzzy, a down-on-his-luck former journalist relegated to concocting stories for a Weekly World News-inspired tabloid. When an elderly woman approaches Buzzy with a compelling ghost story, he's persuaded to investigate. Dunst is Anna, who joins Buzzy in his search to find out the truth about the mysterious 1939 disappearance of five people--including a Shirley Temple-like child star--at the eerily abandoned Hollywood Tower Hotel. There are some scary segments, which may truly frighten sensitive younger viewers. Still, for older kids and adult viewers, Dunst's presence and a fairly fun story makes this an engaging film. (Ages 8 and older) --N.F. Mendoza

A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08
I liked this movie. I wasn't expecting much so maybe that helped me suspend reality long enough to enjoy what I was watching. The plot is simple without being simplistic and the ghosts are not too terrifying for younger children (and me either ha ha).
The big thing for me is that the characters were well done and related to each other and that there actually were motivations for their actions. This is a 3 star plot with a 4 star result because of the acting and directing.
Terror Towers.......2007-01-17
A great Sunday Afternoon film which is fast moving with twists and a happy ending, but in this case happy endings!
Tower of Terror.......2007-01-12
We recently visited Disney World and went on the Tower of Terror so our child just had to have this movie. So we couldn't find it in local stores so I orded it and it took only about 3 business days of non stop "has it arrived yet?" but we got it in perfect shape. Ordered on a Thursday and got it on a Monday...not bad shipping time.
Tower of Terror.......2007-01-09
This is a wonderful movie for children. It has a great deal of suspense without going over the line with violence and gore. The child who has this movie watches it over and over.
Awesome!!!!!.......2006-07-12
This movie is m-Azing! it has a little bit of everything going on. its scary yet funny. i especially love how the lobby in the movie of the hotel looks exactly like the lobby at disney world in their ride. its a great movie and its from disney so whats not to love? right?
