5 out of 5 stars An old clasic! .......2007-06-11

Been a Long time since I've seen this one, glad to have a copy!

4 out of 5 stars An American Zatoichi - the blind swordsman.......2006-11-20

This film takes the character from the original japanese television series "Zatoichi - the Blind Swordsman" starring Shintaro Katsu complete with a hidden cane sword. Rutger Hauer takes the role and puts the American twist in it. Shô Kosugi, a japanese actor who plays ninja in a lot of Japanese movie and television flicks, stars as an assassin who fights Hauer's character. They should make a sequel or a remake this time with a more serious plot...

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2006-09-14

A blind swordman, The fight scenes where great! This man has a sixth sence. The story was also great. A must see!

3 out of 5 stars A different kind of hero.......2006-07-16

If you liked the old "Kung Fu" TV series, you'll like this movie. Soft spoken and easy going Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), like Kwai Chang Caine, roams the civilized world in search of ... peace and tranquility? And, like our Kung Fu hero of the Old West, he is ready to come out of his mild mannered shell to defend the weak and fight evil. How he acquired such fighting skills is even stranger than how Kwai Chang Caine became a Kung Fu Master. Especially considering he is blind.

So what sets this movie apart from other action movies? Rutger Hauer.

Rutger Hauer is a really good actor when he applies himself, which he does not always do in his films. But he is at his pinnacle here, making you believe that what you see is what you get. He will make you believe a blind man can develop a six sense (with a little help from a mysterious tribe somewhere.)

I took a half star off because of a lame attempt at humor. I like a laugh as much as the next guy and there was some decent humor interlaced in the story but, a blind man driving around in heavy traffic, going up one-way streets, is something I expect to see in a three stooge's movie. It was out of place here. Still, this is a good action movie. 3 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Furious Fighting.......2006-05-08

This is a superb film starring Rutger Hauer. It is a well made movie with good acting and a lot of action as well as humour.

Rutger plays as a Vietnam War veteran who lost his sight following an explosion. He was captured by the Japanese and his captors taught him Samurai fighting. He becomes an excellent swordsman. The film then moves forward several years later when Rutger returns to America and goes to visit his old war pal, only to find that he had been kidnapped by some villains and forced to make drugs. He goes to rescue his friend. From this develops an exciting and action packed adventure where he displays his exceptional and creative fighting skills.

If you are a fan of the Dutch actor, Rutger and you love adventure and excitement, then you will not go wrong with this movie.

Bruce Lee and James Coburn conceived the story for this unusual blend of fantasy, martial arts adventure, and Zen mysticism that should please cult-movie collectors and action aficionados with a taste for the offbeat. The bland but serviceable Jeff Cooper stars as a lone warrior who sets out to find the mysterious Book of All Knowledge. He faces numerous physical challenges on his journey, chief among them David Carradine in four roles (including a half-man, half-monkey), as well as numerous philosophical conundrums. While the dialogue by Sterling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) and Stanley Mann (Eye of the Needle) occasionally teeters into self-parody, the action and pace rarely lags, and the fine supporting cast, which includes Christopher Lee, Eli Wallach, and Roddy McDowall, lends a degree of gravity to the proceedings. One wonders how the film would have played with Lee in the cast (it had been a pet project of his for years, but was completed years after his death), but the end result is certainly watchable and entertaining. Blue Underground's DVD includes a wealth of extras, including a typically laid-back interview with Carradine, commentary by director Richard Moore, trailers and TV spots, an alternate title sequence, and, most intriguing of all, Lee's original script with Coburn and Silliphant (accessible only via DVD-ROM). --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Circle of Iron.......2007-05-12

A classic of Zen Philosophy. A bit far-fetched, but nevertheless entertaining and funny.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE ! Unique and interesting.......2007-04-29

This is one of my all time favorite movies ... every line is clever and the scenery and soundtrack music are beautiful ... the fight scenes are some of Carradine's best ... I love the simple but clever plot, the moods and the cinematography ... it takes you to a different place and time ... When i was a kid i would watch this over and over on late night Cinemax. I would put this movie in with the likes of Excalibur (another of my favorites). If you like Excalibur, get this movie. This one is much lower budget but a hidden gem.

3 out of 5 stars The Silent Flute.......2007-04-07

"Circle of Iron" is either a whimsical martial arts movie or a profound exploration of the nature of man, depending on how seriously the viewer takes the philosophical side of martial arts. Based on a story by Bruce Lee, the movie features a quest by a young martial artist named Cord (played by game good humor by Jeff Cooper), who is in search of a mysterious book of knowledge. He is sometimes accompanied on his journey by a blind seer (played by David Carradine) who alternately teaches and challenges young Cord. The seer seems to materialize almost at random along the journey, announcing himself by playing a "silent flute' that only Cord can hear. In a remarkably versatile performance, David Carradine also plays a series of opponents Cord must confront in his journey to the book. The solid supporting cast includes Christopher Lee, Eli Wallach, and Roddy McDowell.

The movie alternates between the mythic landscape over which Cord travels, and the various set-piece but not always obvious obstacles he must overcome. Cord starts out believing that fighting is the solution to every challenge, but comes to understand that more subtle arts must be learned. At the heart of the movie is Cord's slow journey to self-knowledge, one finally fulfilled at his destination on a distant island presided over by a order of monks who guard the book of knowledge

This movie is recommended to fans of the early days of the martial arts genre, of which this movie is a better than average example. Both the humor and the philosophy are gentle, and the fighting sequences are more rhythmic than brutal. Be sure to watch an included interview with David Carradine for some insights on the making of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery.......2007-03-28

Unfortunately they cut out the most part of the "DEATH"- sequence, so that the film lacks in coherence.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Find.......2007-03-22

I found this film at a video store, it was a special $.99 rental. It was the first time I have ever seen this film. I was draw to it with the mention of Bruce Lee and David Carradine.

Now that I have watched the film and found out a little of its back story, I find the film passable at best and frankly wouldn't mind seeing it remade. David Carradine himself is great but as you watch the film you find that you wish he either took the role of Cord for himself, or he just added it to the other 4 he was already playing. Cooper is practically unwatchable. Though I did enjoy some of the notable stars in the film, I could have done without the scene involving Eli Wallach as it was a silly addition that was not needed.

The martial arts in the film are enjoyable though at times slowly paced, David does well seperating each of his characters even during the fight scenes.

I would also like to note, though Lee may have developed this story, he himself did not possess the acting chops to play the roles Carradine played, at least not as well as David did. Now the seeker, Lee could have done alot with that role. It is a shame he did not live long enough to have been involved.

I do reccomend this film to all those that enjoy martial arts in general and Carradine in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up for Zen Man!.......2007-03-19

This is an entertaining, suspenseful, and thought provoking film that is a liberating study in Zen. Between the beautiful cinematography, the intriguing storyline, and Han's skillful martial arts scenes emerge the lessons of honor, respect, revenge, and truth. Not since the TV series Kung Fu years ago with the Master and "grasshopper" has there been entertainment that delves beneath the surface to enrich the viewer through an exercise in enlightenment. Zen Man does this masterfully.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!.......2006-06-09

Great Entertainment. Realistic fight scenes with a lot of emotion. Great performances by all Main characters. Really interesting story and very good action for an independent film.

        5 out of 5 stars Impressive film.......2006-06-05

Zen Man reminds me of a Billy Jack type film. Occasionally, I noticed that with more budget more could have been done in the chasing scenes but boy, it still is impressive for an independent film. This is a beautifully filmed movie, showing real fighting action. You don't really find that kind of movie too much anymore. I give it five stars.

        5 out of 5 stars Very pleased...a great movie.......2006-06-01

I was very pleased that the Making of Zen Man on Disc 2 explained the background stories of the movie. I watched the movie again afterward and it makes a lot more sense now. I wanted to see more fights between Mugabi and Han but the final confrontation ended so quickly. But I guess if the ending were longer it would be dragging out the story. The opening fight is superb but the highlight is at the end when Han fights against Dan. Han's spinning hooking kick to Dan's head is something I've never seen. Zen Man is truly a great movie.

        4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars .......2006-05-21

I had the pleasure of meeting Sang Kim when he was about half way through shooting Zen Man. I enjoyed spending three days with him and found him to be an immensely interesting man, comical, and intense in his approach to film making and in his life-long love of the martial arts.

While Zen Man is Sang's first movie (he has appeared in dozens of martial arts training videos and DVDs), his advanced education in film making shows in nearly every frame. There are several images of water, landscape, calligraphy, and even fog in a cemetery that Sang and his crew shot beautifully, all captured by an artist with an eye for what makes the viewer go "Wow."

As the title implies, Zen Man is about one man's philosophy, but there are several fight scenes for the martial arts fan. Sang displays his incredible kicking ability (his knockout hook kick toward the end of the movie is worth the price of admission), grappling, and stick work in several well-done scenes. His work with the long pole and single and double short sticks is extremely good.

Zen Man, written by Sang and Cynthia Kim, starring and directed by Sang Kim, is a wonderful first movie effort. Sang has a definite screen presence and his directing and cinematography has moments of true mastery.

As others have said here, it will be fun to see Sang's and Cynthia's next movie project.

1 out of 5 stars uninspired and inaccurate.......2004-07-27

Far from depicting the life of the founder of the Zen school of Chinese Buddhism, this film is more or less a glorified kung-fu movie in the typical fashion of that genre of chinese films with interspersed lame attempts at philosphical discourse, and offers little insight into the character of Bodhidharma, Buddhism or the beginnings of the Zen School in China.

            5 out of 5 stars Deep.......2001-10-25

This movie is based on a true story about the Bodhidharma from southern India. "An Enlightened Buddhist Master who is credited with reviving Buddhism in China and founding martial arts."
