Product Description

Vicious and ingenious police flick features Harvey Keitel as an impossibly surly and dysfuntional New York detective on the take. His focus on fine cigars and his prized possession - a Central Park West apartment paid for with drug dealer money are great props for a dirty cop. The story revolves around him and a punk kid (John Lyndon - Johnnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols), who claims to have killed several narcotics cops. A brutal film, not for sensitive viewers.

2 out of 5 stars for diehard keitel fans only.......2007-06-21

Corrupt was originally named Copkiller since that is what the movie is about. Since that title is a little too harsh it was renamed Corrupt since that is also what the movie is about a corrupt cop played by Harvey Keitel. Now this DVD version comes along and it is named Corrupt Lieutenant which sounds very similar to another Keitel film Bad Lieutenant directed by Abel Ferrara. Go with that one instead of watching this one. Keitel plays a dirty cop who along with his partner rent a large and luxurious penthouse overlooking New York. They have paid for their secret pad with the money they steal from drug dealers and evidence. There is a copkiller on the loose who is targeting narcotics cops. Keitel's partner Bob is concerned about this fact and wants to get out of the apartment and the stealing and corruption that him and Keitel are doing. Harvey wants none of it. He enjoys going to this apartment lighting up a big cigar and playing the same annoying country album over and over. When he is done he goes back to his own modest apartment. Meanwhile Bob's wife Lenore is writing a book on the police corruption. She interviews Keitel for his take on the copkiller and there is an attraction between the two of them. She seems to be onto him and perhaps Bob but her own attraction with him keeps her friendly and flirty. Now we are introduced to the other star John Lydon. ( Johnny Rotten the singer from the Sex Pistols.) He plays Leo Smith. He has been following Keitel around and knows about his apartment and how it was paid for. He is hoping to get close to Keitel and confess to him that he is the copkiller. He stakes out Keitel's apartment leading to a few near confrontations between the two of them. Finally he goes to Harvey's apartment where he tells him who he is. Harvey does not believe him but yet cuffs him and holds him there. Bob finds out about this and since he is already having second thoughts about his dealings with Keitel this is the final straw. He tells Harvey to let him go and Harvey says that he did. However we see that Harvey still has him chained up in the bathtub. Bob comes over one night and sees this which leads to a confrontation between Bob and Harvey which ends in Bob's death. Who killed him was it Harvey killing his own partner or was it Lydon the alleged copkiller. This question is the one left to be solved for the rest of the movie. Whereas before the murder Keitel was the tough guy torturing Lydon and imprisoning him, now its Lydon who has total control over Keitel. His guilt over his lifestyle and the murder are rendering him completly useless. He takes his orders from Lydon and does his bidding. At one point Lydon convinces him that he has to kill Lenore because she is onto something. This sets up an uneasy scene where it seems like they are trading on their unsaid attraction to each other. Anyway by the end of the film everything that has come before it doesn't matter because the ending makes absolutely no sense. Its just a mess that doesn't resolve anything. The film did start out good though with intense acting from Keitel and Lydon locked in this battle of wills. When the tables were turned and Lydon was the agressor it was still interesting but not as believable. By the final act where Lydon is telling him to kill the wife it is too confusing and not believable and the ending does nothing to answer any of the questions that are brought up. If you can't get enough of Keitel's tough guy act then definitely pick this one up as it is very cheap. That is not to say that Harvey relies on his toughness to sell the role his acting is good too. And Lydon is as weird and spooky as you would expect him to be in the role of a copkiller. An okay movie but nevertheless a disappointing one.

4 out of 5 stars many different titles for this excellent film.......2006-04-24

This was originally titled THE ORDER OF DEATH, after the novel upon which it is based; then it was released, I think, in Europe under the title COPKILLER. Then the pansies in th US re-named it CORRUPT. And now someone has obviously decided to try to cash in on the Harvey Keitel angle and call this "Corrupt Lieutenant" in a desperate attempt to make audiences think this is a knock-off of Bad Lieutenant. Which is all really not needed because this movie--no matter what it is called--is a very intelligent and engrossing thriller. It boasts a pair of fine performances from Harvey Keitel and the criminally underappreciated John Lydon, formerly Johhny Rotten. He gives an excellent performance as the man who may or may not be the dememnted killer. All in all this is a nifty, over-looked police suspenser well worth seeking out.

2 out of 5 stars switch on the ice T commentary.......2005-04-12

I am a BIG Ice-T fan, but even I have to admit, the only way to watch this movie is to watch the Ice-T commentary version. It's an absolute scream! He obviously knows how poorly the film came out, and is not above telling us about it. Ice-T is, well... Ice-T in his comments. Be prepared.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't belong on DVD. More like....a garbage can........2004-05-07

This film looked like it was shot on a handheld videocam, and it had the storyline of a television drama. Had about as much acting talent and creativity as one any way.

This made WB dramas look like Laurence Olivier films.

4 out of 5 stars a BRILLIANT commentary saves this from godawful wackness.......2004-01-23

this film is simply woeful.theres no other way to describe it.utterly devoid of acting, basic character development, and utterly no plot.i may slag certain films for poor dialogue or acting, but this doesnt contain ANY!!!!! the thing is,theres a certain enjoyment in watching something so pathetic that they seem ignorant to the fact its rubbish.it jerks and jumps and goes absolutely no where.there is no plot.no plot whatsoever.however, switch on the ice T commentary, and hey!!! its great!!!! this is possibly one of the best commentarys ever!!!! almost everything he says is hilarious!!! he basically admits the film is terrible and he was just having a laugh.he asks why silkk the shocker appeared in it."he's rich i dunno why he agreed to it".yeah,so do we. he goes on at length about how they didnt bother to film in new york, instead filming in a cheepo dump somewhere in eastern europe.theres so many quotes that ice T said that stick in my mind.for example, theres shots of new york when it switches from scene to scene."look at this, this is what new york is...tenements,hills....." wow thanks for that one."if you hear any noises,i had taco bells before i came here"."i dont know what the hell thats supposed to mean"."that B**** keeps looking at the clock,i dunno what message that means though".are brilliant!!!!!!! ice t is hillarious in this!!!!!! the guy has a great sense of humour, and i get the feeling what he does is meant to be taken slightly ironically.so,to summarise it; if you're looking for a film with action and thrills, look elsewhere.however,if you're looking for a rubbish film, and have someone make great comments about it,then look no further!!!!! id DEFINATELY recommend you buy this!!!!!!! i laughed pretty much the whole way through it. 4 outta 5

1 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE SHORTEST MOVIES I'VE SEEN IN MY LIFE.......2003-11-25

THIS IS ONE POOR EXCUSE FOR A GANGSTA MOVIE. A YOUNG THUG [SILKK THE SHOCKER] TRYS TO ESCAPE THE WRATH OF AN O.G. [ICE-T]. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE SHORTEST MOVIES I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. COME ON, THIS MOVIE DIDN'T EVEN LAST AN HOUR! FILLED WITH ICE-T MUSIC FROM BEGINNING TO END. THIS MOVIE IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED. AS ALWAYS, IT'S FILMED ON A CHEAP BUDGET AND IT'S FILLED WITH BAD ACTING. THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EMBARRASING MOVIES THAT ICE-T HAS EVER APPEARED IN. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRASH AT ALL COSTS.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, but hilarious........2003-08-05

Corrupt *is* terrible from an aesthetic perspective, but Ice-T's hilarious commentary is worth the price of admission alone. If you're an MST3K fan, or just a fan of hilarious terrible films in general, you might enjoy Corrupt.

        Product Description

Dashiel Hammett's The Glass Key, a tale of big-city political corruption, was first filmed in 1935, with Edward Arnold as a duplicitous political boss and George Raft as his loyal lieutenant. This 1942 remake improves on the original, especially in replacing the stolid Raft with the charismatic Alan Ladd. Brian Donlevy essays the role of the boss, who is determined to back reform candidate Moroni Olsen, despite Ladd's gut feeling that this move is a mistake. Ladd knows that Donlevy is doing a political about-face merely to get in solid with Olsen's pretty daughter Veronica Lake. It is Ladd who is left to clean up the mess when crime lord Joseph Calleila murders Olsen's wastrel son Richard Denning and pins the rap on Donlevy. As Ladd struggles to clear Donlevy's name, he falls in love with Lake--when he's not being pummeled about by Calleila's psychopathic henchman William Bendix. Far less complex than the Dashiel Hammett original (and far less damning of the American political system), The Glass Key further increased the box-office pull of Paramount's new team of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.

1 out of 5 stars The number of absurdities are never ending, pointless plot.......2007-05-18

COP KILLER (1983) starring the great Harvey Keitel, is a movie that
builds up plenty of suspense and drama towards the end, but for
most of the movie, has a plot that is pointless and often absurd.

The DVD release seems directly transferred from the poorest VHS
tape imaginable, with a pan-and-scan format (unlike widescreen that
most people have come to appreciate and prefer these days.) The
image often is out of focus, dark, and the audio is often uneven,
inconsistent, to the point that the camera's motor is often
audible, as the it is rolling. With absolutely no mixing in the
audio, often the dialog is inaudible, other times poor, etc.

The goal of the producer was to have a big calling card in the form
of rock band Sex Pistol's John Lydon (who was the vocalist for the
punk bank in the 70's, together with Johnny Rotten, and others). At
the time of this movie, I would assume Lydon's musical career had
ended, the punk phenomenon proven ephemeral as the public's tastes
        had changed.

Unfortunately for Keitel, this movie in no way, shape or form
approaches world-class art that the actor aspires to, nor does it
constitute any stepping stone to something greater or a milestone
in his career, as it seems nothing more than a low-budget project
to shake a few bucks off the unsuspecting young public, who either
liked the vocalist, or seem attracted to the concept of a police
detective mixing with a serial killer.

The number of absurdities are never ending ...Lydon eating food
from a dog tray, as he's locked up in Keitel's bathtub, after
snooping too much, and getting to close to the policeman, for
        example.

In addition to low budget cameras and film, the skill of the
photographers is put into question, as the camera is "jerky" when
trying to follow action sequences as simple as an actor walking
across the street, which suggests either inexperience, lack of
skill or lack of budget. The color is too often faded or showing
        distortion. There are no subtitles.

The visual special effects are either very primitive or
non-existent. The audio effects appear for the most part as having
been made on a $20 synth instrument, meaning cheaper than cheap.

        The banjo soundtrack, doesn't help.

The movie could have redeemed itself, had it offered some laughable
scenes, plot or dialog. Unfortunately, the public is left on their
appetites, as the suspense and thrill of the ending (which the
director suceeds in building) unfolds in a simplistic, predictable
        fashion.

Overall, in all aspects, except Keitel, the movie is not world
class at all, but mainly juvenile as a product, although it does
offer that all-important dream-like quality that most people will
remember as a weird nightmare seen on their DVD players.

        2 out of 5 stars TV version.......2002-05-20

This is the censored version with all the cursing and graphic violence taken out. It may be the only available version which may make it worth something. It does not specify that it is the TV version anywhere so it is a bit of a deception. Pretty good movie if you are curious.

2 out of 5 stars Lydon Performance Saves Film.......2000-12-28

The plot of this movie is truly intriguing; the acting by Harvey Keitel is fine; but if it weren't for John Lydon as Leo Smith, this pitiful mish-mosh of a so-called thriller would be unwatchable.

The lighting is so dark that it is hard to follow the action. The sound quality is terrible, and the plot twists and turns are so oddly paced that the tension is dissipated before the final scene. The one bright spot is Lydon's fresh and crisp portrayal of the rich psychopathic copkiller. Lydon is a natural actor, and does a great job injecting the right mix of youth and innocence with the aura of sick and dangerous obsessions. If you're a Lydon/Rotten fan, don't miss this; otherwise, forget it.

4 out of 5 stars The Corrupt Lieutenant.......2000-02-04

Nine years before his raw, celebrated performance in "Bad Lieutenant", Harvey Keitel gave us another visceral portrayal of a corrupt cop in this Italian police thriller. From Harvey's fringe years in European Cinema, this highly original film pairs him opposite former Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten. Rotten, billed as John Lydon, is an obssessed loner and would-be cop killer conducting personal survellance on the police. He seeks out Lieutenant Fred O'Connor(Keitel), at O'Connor's posh Manhattan apartment that the Lieutenant has purchased with money amassed while on the take, to confess to a series of murders. From that point the two engage in a bizzare and engrossing psychological battle of wills. In "Corrupt", Keitel gives us a portrayal of a deeply conflicted man at odds with himself. Unlike the Bad Lieutenant, who undergoes a combustible emotional breakdown, O'Connor is a man slowly unraveling and Keitel expertly displays every slow painful moment. Along with his other early 80's films "Deathwatch" and "Bad Timing", "Corrupt" proves that Keitel was always giving top notch, emotionally invested, and highly credible performances, even if he wasn't always getting the notice he deserved for them.

4 out of 5 stars If You're in Left Field, Catch It.......1999-12-12

Anyone expecting a typical crime drama, or even a Scorsese-esque Urban Anomie Saga w/ slick period soundtrack will be disappointed. This film is genuinely eccentric (not Tarantino-style faux weirdness), made under chaotic circumstances with intense philosophical earnestness. That earnestness, w/ the film's addled direction, can be achingly funny.

The highlights aren't just Lydon's tweaky, flat-voiced hamming or Keitel's poker face (w/ Lydon he's the funniest straight-man since Oliver Hardy). Check it out, the whole film was made in ROME! And they don't seem to care if you notice! Just count the loose plot ends, the obvious, clueless ad-libs, the supposedly tart one-liners that fall like little Hindenbergs. Watch for the scene where Keitel rotates a milk carton, on camera, because the label wasn't visible enough for the product placement. And then there's that "70's Country song," which is actually Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony played on wheezy folk guitar. These people had no idea what they were doing, but they weren't even trying to do it like anyone else. The result is somehow monumental.

Well, both movies are from trash-flick-director Albert Pyun, so that should be a warning enough to most of you, but "Mean Guns" really ist one of his best movies (stylishly filmed, with cool characters (Christopher Lambert is great in his role!) and dispite a stupid story good trashy fun)...

Now let's find some words about "Corrupt": "Bad, stupid and cheap" come to mind ... must I say more?

All in all I gave 3 stars: 4 for "Mean Guns", 1 for "Corrupt", 1/2 for the double-feature-DVD.
If you like Albert Pyun flicks, buy this edition, if you are not into trash-B-film - be warned...
