Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon

I love the concept of this story. Great visuals. I do think it gets a little sketchy on the details toward the end though.

1 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?.......2007-07-02

Oh, me. Instead of listening to the reviews on Amazon, I took a chance and bought this sequel to Underworld. In my defense, I had just seen the first Underworld, and I absolutely love it. I honestly thought that the sequel couldn't be as bad as the reviewers said it was. Silly rabbit. I am just at a loss to see how the writers and director of the first movie could have made this stinker. Everything that was so good about the first movie - the acting, good (simple) special effects, and an actual story - seemed absent from Underworld:Evolution. And what was with the yucky sex scenes? It just goes to show that the best movies are always low-budget. So, my advice is to save yourself a similar fate and just enjoy the first Underworld (which is still awesome).

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it........2007-07-01

This movie is so great just for the fact that one of the hottest chicks in the world is in it, Kate Beckinsale. nuff said

4 out of 5 stars There Could Have Been More Killing...........2007-06-27

...because in a movie like this when 15 minutes go by and a head isn't lopped off or someone isn't impaled you get antsy with bloodlust. Also any love scene where nary a booby manifests is bound to disappoint.

The entertainment, however, of face and head violence alone does enough to compensate; this dude is shot in the head from inches away; there are a score of beheadings and werewolves eating people's faces; a girl slams another girl's face into a brick wall (twice); and the orgy is not limited to gore, with an unnecessary scene with, like, a hundred broads all over each other does take place. Another positive is my girlfriend broke down in tears during the movie, but I had told her its a romantic comedy, and everyone knows 'girl tears' justify lies.

Yes, more people needed to die, but there was a great deal of blood, which is nice...

4 out of 5 stars Chapter 2.......2007-06-19

Chances are, if you're reading this, than you have seen the first installment of the series. Welcome to chapter two; Underworld: Evolution.

The name of the movie really speaks for itself when it comes to the whole essence of the story. There truly is some evolution that goes on in the film. This time around viewers are treated to more of what started the war between the vampires and Leicans. Acompanying this, a whole slew of flashbacks from the childhood memories of Selene (Beckinsale) and what she remembers having seen from her early years.

The viewer comes to learn that perhaps Selene has been amidst the "war" for longer than she has thought. Throughout this, you have Selene's own Evolution of thought, as well as truly accepting her fate, knowing full-well that this is what she was born to do.

Along withe the story evolving to the next stage, so does the romance between Selene and Michael (Speedman). Unlike most movies that tend to over-sell the sex to make the romance seem real, director Len Wiseman keeps it relatively short and classy. Just enough to show that Selene and Michael have grown enough as characters to truly trust one another and be commited to loving one another.

The action steps it up a notch in this sequel, as well as having its fare share of gruesome killings. Now, most sequels in general never seem to live up to the original, however, the Underworld franchise (in my opinion) does not fall victim to this.

All in all, this movie lives up to the original name and shows that the story between vampires and liceans has only just begun.

An entertaining well acted mini-series. Features Gerard Butler as "Attila," and he does a great job as the leader of the Huns. I enjoyed it. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good period piece.......2007-05-07

This movie gives a glamorized portrait of Attila's life, but it does have a lot of historical accuracy. I doubt that Attila really looked like Gerard Butler, but who cares? All the actors are quite good, and this should be seen by people who liked Gladiator, Spartacus, Braveheart.

4 out of 5 stars Attila the Hun DVD.......2007-03-29

This movie was made for tv. For a made for tv movie, this movie is excellent. If you like the history of the Roman Empire and Attila, you will enjoy this movie. I wish more movies like this could be made. Roman history is so interesting, because I feel that history does repeat itself.

Honestly my initial attraction to owning this DVD was Gerard Butler. He is smoking!!!!!! hot!!!! He also happens to be a fine actor who obviously works very hard at his craft. Although the story was not completely historically accurate (I am fairly certain the real Attila was not as considerate of the women he owned), I enjoyed the acting. Powers Boothe was very good as well. The friendship/conflict between his character and Attila was very interesting.

I don't think I will ever think of an adult man and a diaper the same way again. Did I say Gerry Butler was smoking hot!!!! He was the reason I bought the DVD, but all performances and production made the entire story quite interesting. No disappointment here.

5 out of 5 stars Gerard Butler the Handsomest and Best Actor in the World.......2007-03-19

I rented this movie on netflix purely by chance. It was a great movie and the leading man Gerard Butler won me over. He is so handsome. I know he had to lose his scottish accent so he could play this part. I just so enjoyed this movie so much. I watched it till I thought I was wearing a hole in the DVD. I finally sent it back to netflix and decided to buy my own copy. I think I have watched it about 50 times.
Now I watch for all his movies, he just is my favorite actor of all time!
Great battle scenes, loads of action, and really a great miniseries that I believe brought him many more fans, after they saw his acting ability in Attila.
Critics did not like it. I loved it, and I never listen to the critics any way. I make up my own mind on movies.

Director Joe (The Howling, Gremlins) Dante helmed one of the more daring episodes of Masters of Horror to date--Homecoming-- and his second go-round for the cable anthology series is another thought-provoking chiller with real-world overtones. Here, Dante and screenwriter Sam Hamm (who also penned Homecoming) adapt James Tiptree, Jr.'s 1977 noted short story of the same name and concoct an alarming nightmare scenario in which men are suddenly and brutally attacking women when sexually aroused. The solution to this sudden wave of violence falls to scientists Jason Priestley and Elliott Gould, but the situation rapids erupts into a global epidemic, and Priestley's wife (Kerry Norton) must fend for herself and their daughter in a world that wants her dead at all costs. Dante and his capable deliver the terror with a straight face, and if Hamm's script strays too often into tangents about environmental responsibility, the abundance of suspense and outright violence offers a balance to genre fans that are less interested in social issues. The DVD includes commentary by Dante and Hamm, featurettes on the episode's production and special effects (by KNB), and the shooting script in DVD-ROM format. --Paul Gaita

2 out of 5 stars The Sci-Fi Problem to the Screwfly Solution.......2007-07-03

Joe Dante is one of my top favorite horror directors. Because I think he keenly understands how to make a really intense horror film. His thing is that he mixes the horror with humor so that you're expecting the entire film to be a fun breeze... and then: HE HITS YOU with straight-up, pure horror in one key scene. And when it comes, it packs a serious punch, and from that moment on, you have to hold on to your seat because a Joe Dante film is an unpredictable ride of crazy, quirky horror.

But... he hasn't made a horror film since the exquisite Gremlins 2. Maybe he's rusty.

This Masters of Horror thing hasn't been a very good gig for Joe. Of course, maybe he'd tell you different since he's been very enthusiastic about finally getting to direct 2 projects he's been wanting to do for some time. In his interviews for Homecoming, he mentions that Masters of Horror is pretty much the only place he could make a horror flick like Homecoming. And in interviews for Screwfly, he mentions that he's been trying to do The Screwfly Solution since the 1980's. But his trademark style of horror has been stifled by the ambitiousness of his chosen projects versus the limitations of the Masters of Horror format.

Quite frankly, to make material like The Screwfly Solution really work... the man needs MORE TIME. The Masters of Horror shooting schedule allows for 10 days. That's it. I honestly doubt that is enough time to fully form and organize and work out a story like this to make it horrifying enough for maximum impact. And this is a subject that deserves maximum impact. I'm sure Joe did the best he could, but unfortunately all he had time for was to project the idea of what would happen if this situation were to come upon the human race while deciding to use the Science Fiction genre to explain everything.

I don't think The Screwfly Solution is a horror that should be or needs to be explained rather than shown. The only way to feel this intensity and learn from it, to have it truly affect us, there has to be less focus on telling a story in the traditional method. And instead, show it to us raw. Allow us to feel it in a way that will leave us really questioning how much of a problem this is. Because it's obviously a subject of great interest.

The specific problems with Screwfly are that the men, who are the killers in the film, aren't scary. They are merely shown as frustrated and annoyed. But that's what we experience every day from men. And it's not really all that horrifying. We see territorial man, road rage man, military authority man, and the standard pig-headed man. But are we afraid of these men? And how much do we fear them? We fear that they will set us back, irritate us, and make us late for a dinner appointment. The man Screwfly completely forgets to show us - is Serial Killer Man. This of course might have something to do with the movie's decision to make the men killing women kill them because of sexual arousal.

For instance, there's a scene in the movie where a man stabs with his knife aimed at the level of his crotch as he kills a woman in a rhythmic manner. That is pretty much as disturbing as this movie gets. I'm not kidding. It's another Joe Dante Masters of Horror tale that implies horror and refuses to show it. This could be considered compensation for the fact that Dante's trademark satire-humor is completely missing from Screwfly. And in its' place is a full dose of science fiction. Which also helps to ensure that Screwfly is merely intriguing, not horror-enducing. Dante's usually usually depends on 1 key scene as an accelerator. Unfortunately his work in this series only has 1 key scene each.

In Homecoming, it was a wonderfully threatening and unexpected moment where a zombie actually kills a human being. In Screwfly, it's when we see a man kill a woman with the force of his sexual frustration.

In many science fiction films, the theme is invasion. Disease isn't uncommon to horror either. 28 Days Later, for instance. Maybe the appeal of making Screwfly a disease-horror film has to do with the fragility of our psychological stabilities. That we can be easily overrided by our own bodies. Just a twist of a few chemicals in our systems or hormones in our brains and we could be manipulated into becoming killers.

The last remaining bit of horror in Screwfly involves an escape for (apparently) the last living woman on Earth. Which I think brings the viewer to the best part of the movie, the ending. The ending a lot of people have remarked is terrible. However, I think it's far-fetchedness is exactly what makes it a happy ending. It's a cop-out in a way. Depending on how you look at it. But it's also a sign that getting rid of women wasn't the real objective. One of the greatest horrors I can think of is that men as a race will suddenly physically decide to wipe out an entire group of people for an arbitrary reason yet unknown to us. So maybe a story like this needs an unrealistic ending to help us sleep better at night.

In short, either you'll like just the ending (like me) and reject the majority of the episode. Or you'll somehow be pulled along the episode's trail but be disappointed by the needlessness of the ending. A lot of movies have had endings that feel like different movies altogether. I wouldn't have rather watched the kind of Screwfly Solution that would have been made based on expanding the ending here by itself. But I think the ending here actually adds a tone to the episode. The episode itself lacks a true tone. It's certainly not very disturbing. In fact, I think, save for nudity and language (and a little blood in 2 scenes), this is exactly the sort of thing that would show up on Lifetime. It has that characteristic Lifetime flatness about it.

The idea is horrifying. I think women will understand it without becoming confused as to what the filmakers were trying to accomplish. For instance, it's silly to assume that just because women die in Screwfly Solution while men call them horrible names and assault them sexually, that women will be offended by it.

Here's a trick question: how many times did you think about sex while reading this?

2 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BIT SCREWY.......2007-06-14

This entry in the compelling MOH series is a little strange, mixing social commentary with a small dose of horror. The world is suddenly going mad, at least its male population...sexual arousal is leading men to murder the woman responsible...and soon it's just men murdering women. Two scientists offer a solution, as evidenced by the control of the dangerous screwfly population. But no one listens, and of course disaster ensues.
Director Joe Dante doesn't do anything compellingly different, and the acting by Jason Priestley and Elliott Gould is merely adequate. Not a sterling entry in this otherwise good series.

5 out of 5 stars Pest Control-and Man is the Pest.......2007-06-06

I expected this to be good because I know that Joe Dante is an excellent director, but when I saw that it was based on a story by James Tiptree Jr., I sat up, because I knew this was going to be something REALLY extraordianary.

James Tiptree Jr. is one of the greatest science fiction writers of the latter part of the 20th Century. James Tiptree Jr. was also the nom de plume of Dr. Alice Sheldon (look for Tiptree's books on Amazon). Her writing was always psychologically complex and surprising. And this installment of MASTERS OF HORROR captured that, thanks to Dante's brilliance and Sam Hamm's great script.

It's made clear from the beginning that there is a parallel between our decimation of the screwfly/pest insect populations by disruption of their sexual cycles, and what is occuring to the human population in this story (at least it's clear to us, the audience). So this naturally begs the question: If we did that to the insects, who or what could be doing this to us?

The conclusion of this story is set up right from the beginning, is deepend, enhanced, and made more apparent throughout the telling of it. There is no cheap ending here. It is logical, inevitable, and horrible. Horrible for humans, anyway.

The dogs seem to like it.

It's important to keep in mind that this isn't a chainsaw hack-'em-up-er, or blood drinking beast fest, or a vengeful ghost mind twister. This is a story about the most terrifying monsters in the world: ordinary people who give in to the worst within themselves, thinking they're right, and good, and normal. Men who don't see other people (women) as human. And you have to pay attention.

Personally, this is my favorite episode so far in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Chances are this Flick won't make it to "Lifetime: Television for Women" .......2007-06-04

In the 1950's 2 American Entomologists (Dr. Raymond Bushland & Dr. Edward Knipling) developed the "sterile insect technique",
to control the population of the screwworm fly. In this technique the male screwworm flies were exposed to radiation, thus rendering them sterile. They were then returned back to the wild, to mate with other wild female screwworm flies. The result was a reduction in the amount of eggs being laid inside American crops.
Now someone or something is applying the same technique to mankind.
A new form of sterilization, characterized by sexually driven bloodlusts.
At first it appears to be a few random mysoginistic slayings.
But as the numbers grow, so does the concern.
With the possibility of an epidemic, whole areas are soon quarantined.
No women are allowed in for they're own safety.
They're being forced to stay away, because women of all ages are being wiped out by men who seem to believe that what they're doing in natural & rational.
In countries around the world it's occuring on such a massive scale, that whole rivers are being damned by the steady influx of bodies.
But who is causing this, and why?

I watched this episode with my wife, which almost never happens as a result of her being female, and hating horror movies.
So, after an unnatural amount of coaxing, I finally got her to sit down and watch one with me.
And of course, it was an apocalyptic horror movie concerning the erradication of women.
Suffice it to say, she will never be watching another horror movie with me, for as long as we both shall live.
Obviously, this movie had a much greater impact on her than it did on me.
And rightfully so,
I'm not a woman, who in most countries (and maybe even in this one),
have to live in fear of men every day.
(Hell, in Japan, groping is so bad, women have their own subway cars.)
(And let's not even get started on the Middle East)
This flick is the cinematic embodiment of every woman's fear.
Namely, Men.

With all that being said,
this film deserved more time to explore it's subject,
a bigger budget to employ more extras & horrific scenes,
and a much better ending that doesn't blow the whole premise.
(Nothing ruins a good horror movie more than a really cheap twist ending.)
All in all this was an enjoyable film, that could have been memorable, had it been alotted the time to go the extra mile.
As a result, the films story suffered, often taking huge leaps in time, giving it an incomplete feeling.
But if you really wind up liking it, I have a suggestion.
A better, modern example of "gendercide" is depicted in Brian K. Vaughn's monthly comic series, "Y: The Last Man". Pick up the trade-paper-backs, you will absolutely not be disappointed.

In closing,
If you're a horror-buff you'll enjoy this movie for what it is,
But do yourself a favor and don't watch it with your female,
She won't look at you the same way, for like a week.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
A world without women
is not a post-apocalyptic world I would want to live in.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Premise And Intelligent Plotting Bring New Life To The End Of The World.......2007-04-18

Joe Dante's "Homecoming" for Showtime's "Masters of Horror" anthology series was easily the controversial high point of Season One. Alternately described as "brilliant" and "complete trash," there were very few who straddled the middle on this political zombie satire. Needless to say, this intrigued me to contemplate how Dante would follow up this divisive little tale. Well, for Season Two, Dante clocks in with "The Screwfly Solution." It certainly has a provocative topic, and is the ultimate battle of the sexes--but I suspect that it is a lot less likely to engender the passionate debate of "Homecoming." That is not a criticism, however, as I think this episode stands as one of the more sophisticated entries we've seen so far!

Contemplating the end of the world, "Screwfly" offers a new take on the apocalypse genre. A virus affecting men is discovered where if the man is to become sexually aroused--his feelings end up turning to a murderous rage. Needless to say, this doesn't bode well for the women of the world--as this rage is directed at them! While this may, on the surface, seem to be a bit (or a lot) misogynistic--the disease is handled well and its repercussions are real, unpleasant and not taken lightly. The principles include Jason Priestly and Elliott Gould as researchers trying to combat the virus, but this just may take the ultimate toll on their families.

"Screwfly" may not be scary in the traditional sense if you're looking for quick thrills, but the premise is chilling and disturbing and it leads to appropriate gruesomeness. The tale is well acted and sometimes harrowing, with an emotional context I haven't found often in the "Masters of Horror" series. In fact, through most of the film, I thought I might be scoring this episode at 5 stars--that's how pleasantly surprised I was by this tale. The end scenes, however, may be a bit prolonged for some viewers. That didn't bother me as it brought the real domestic dilemma of this story to the forefront. But, at the last minute, the film provides us with an unnecessary explanation for the whole catastrophe which was both unnecessary and not worthy of what has preceded it. This terrific tale went wrong in the end, but that doesn't keep it from being one of the best this show had to offer! KGHarris, 04/07.

Though one might question the legitimacy of director Rob Schmidt being named a Master of Horror after his previous effort, the odious Wrong Turn, with Right to Die he turns in a watchable episode for the horror anthology series that combines the standard hardcore gore with a dose of social commentary. Indie stalwart Martin Donovan is top-billed as a philandering dentist whose wife is left disfigured and near death after a fiery car wreck. As a debate rages between Donovan, his wife's family, and various factions of the "right to life" community, the wife's spirit wreaks gruesome vengeance on those seek to exploit her agony for their own purposes. Exceptionally gruesome at times, and well-played by Donovan and Corbin Bernsen as his shady lawyer, Right to Die is one of the more ambitious episodes from MoH's second season, and if its mix of chills and politics isn't as satisfying as Joe Dante's first season episode, Homecoming, it still aims higher than most mainstream genre efforts. The DVD includes commentary by Schmidt, featurettes on the episode and its grisly special effects, and the shooting script in DVD-ROM format. -- Paul Gaita

"Right To Die" is an interesting and entertaining episode. Directed by Rob Schmidt, who is responsible for the suprisingly good horror movie "Wrong Turn", proves here he does have some skill. The episode doesn't try to deliver any major gore or scary suspense, but it does make you think about if someone is in a vegetative state or permanent coma, who decides if they have the right to die?

What saves this episode from being boring is the great acting from every character in the movie and the mystery that builds up towards the second half of the story about who is actually going to live and who is actually going to die.

3 out of 5 stars Ghastly, Ghostly, & Satisfying, Mostly.......2007-05-09

Though Rob ("WRONG TURN") Schmidt probably qualifies more as an 'apprentice' of horror (not quite a 'master', yet, is he?), his MoH entry "RIGHT TO DIE" is pretty neat.

Dull dentist Dr. Cliff gets caught up in a media-blitzed Schiavo-esque scenario when his wife Abby turns into a deep-fried human nugget after a car crash. Too bad, though, since shapely Abby (fake chest and all) was pretty attractive beforehand. For that matter, Cliff's uber-trashy, sexpot office assistant ain't half-bad, either. Could there be more to this lil' love triangle than meets the eye? *sarcastic, feigned gasp*

Cribbing her appearance from "HELLRAISER II", Abby is all bloody skin and sinew and bandages and glaring eyes as her incorporeal spirit (not quite dead, or living) wreaks havoc on those who've crossed her - not even co-star Corbin Bernsen is immune to her fury. If you thought a woman scorned was bad, wait 'til ya see a woman scorched. Eww. Not exactly shocking or particularly scary, "RIGHT TO DIE" still succeeds largely based on on some gruesome burn & skin peeling-fx and an absurd, dry humor-laced finale. Although I question the scientific logic in the 'hyper-magnetized MRI room' sequence, I suspended disbelief long enough to enjoy the film.

As someone who just plain despises overbearing media coverage of things like the Terry Schiavo case, I found "RIGHT TO DIE" a little bit too topical (even several years after the fact), since it already feels dated based on the subject matter. The reeeally good horror flix are timeless, and thusly I don't think "RIGHT TO DIE" will make anyone's 'Top 8' anytime soon. But it's still an interesting piece of work in it's own right, in or out of context, simply as an unassumingly fun, quickie horror fix. All in all, I'd recommend it as one of the better recent 'Masters...' episodes.

3 out of 5 stars Kill Me, Love Me--"Right To Die" Advocates Never Anticipated This Dilemma.......2007-03-11

Just what qualifies someone to be called a "Master" in the horror genre? That's a question I've asked several times in the two seasons of Showtime's "Masters of Horror" anthology series. Looking at their slate of directors, there are some obvious choices--but disappointingly the undisputed "Masters" haven't necessarily turned in the best episodes of this show. Rob Schmidt is, perhaps, one of the more dubious choices to fulfill a "Masters" criteria--his most notorious horror work is the film "Wrong Turn." And while I'm sure that film has its admirers, it is ultimately just another of countless derivations of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" complete with young couples isolated in the woods being stalked by hillbilly murderers.

"Right to Die," however, is not a bad entry in the "Masters of Horror" series. In fact, it's rather solid with an unexpected and appreciated cleverness. Martin Donovan, an indie film stalwart whose deadpan delivery I have always admired, stars as the film's protagonist. Existing in a troubled marriage, Donovan's situation goes from bad to worse as a horrible car accident puts his wife in a coma. Covered in burns, unrecognizable, and not able to live without technological intervention--the episode wrestles with whether or not Donovan should humanely let her die. Oh but there's one complication, his wife's spirit is restless. Every time her heart fails, but before she is revived, her gruesome specter is on the move seeking retribution on those that have wronged her in life.

I particularly liked the juxtaposition of the traditional horror story with the "Right to Die" political debate. That's what makes this episode unique, and there is genuine humor that is mined from this topic. The horror sequences are effective enough--if somewhat familiar. Borrowing elements from the tepid "What Lies Beneath," and even "Hellraiser," the scariness of this episode is far less inventive than the shrewd appropriation of the Right To Die controversy. But for an hour, you could do worse. The acting is solid, the effects are good--all in all, I found this to be a worthwhile episode. About 3 1/2 stars (for me, the most enjoyable episodes have only been 4 stars), this is better than you might expect from someone with such an undistinguished horror resume. KGHarris, 03/07.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Opera From La Scala.......2007-01-09

Not only are the performances top-notch, but the production values exceed what one has grown to expect from operas on DVD. Each opera in this collection conveys the feeling (almost) of sitting in the audience.

This collection was recommended by a friend who works in opera. He not only is a talented producer, but is very close with his euros. I was about to order an opera DVD which cost most of what I paid for this entire set!

First Class Opera at a bargain basement price.

5 out of 5 stars Diverse collection!.......2007-01-03

It's amazing to see this collection. Not all of the performances are spectacular, but there are many surprises of excellence. My favorites for singing are ADRIANA, LUCIA, COSI, and I VESPRI.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure at a bargain price.......2006-08-09

This is a superlative collection of live opera transmissions from the most important opera house in the world, La Scala. The Lucia and the Due Foscari are among my favorites. Superb voices, gorgeous settings and sumptuous costumes. Verdi's Attila is seldom mounted, and this is a chance to witness this very exciting opera in a monumental production. I count this as a most important section of my operatic video library.

4 out of 5 stars Love the concept........2007-07-03

The dark connections between art, desire, and evil fuel Max, an alternate-history fantasy that imagines what might have happened if a Jewish art dealer named Max Rothman (John Cusack, High Fidelity) had befriended Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor, Shine) when he was a frustrated artist, before he turned to politics to vent his hatred. Some critics have expressed fear that even to attempt to make Hitler understandable is to diffuse or dismiss his malignancy; but watching Hitler vacillate between Rothman's attempts at mentorship and the encouragement of an ambitious military officer demonstrates the pettiness, desperation, and craven need that can bring horror into the world. Cusack portrays a generous man with simple decency and not a trace of grandstanding, but Taylor--with glittering eyes and lips twisted with bile--is both fascinating and repellent in an impressive performance. An intelligent and complex film, Max deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Art and War.......2007-06-21

Of all of the films released during the past ten years, this might be the most underappreciated. The script alone is one of the most fascinating and intelligent ever brought to the screen. There are thousands of war films, but this one brings genuine insight as to the way nearly all wars begin - in the heads of people who are really not much more than maladjusted victims fueled by a thirst for vengeance against enemies real and imaginary and a desire for relief from fear and feelings of worthlessness through gaining power and dominance.

Noah Taylor provides a pretty effective Hitler, but it is John Cusack who is truly masterful in the title role. He plays an extremely interesting, milti-dimensional character who is both and idealist and a cynic. Virtually every one of his lines is thought-provoking, and, though his vision of what is truly right is so much deeper and wiser than that of his artistic protege Hitler, he is no saint, only a flawed man struggling to find a way to express his art and his truth.

The supporting cast does an excellent job, and the direction is first-rate. The film is dark both in theme and in visual effect, and many of the shots are nearly perfect in their ability to communicate the darkness of post-WWI Germany, and the troubled and tortured people in it. The scenes shot from inside the art gallery are unforgettable.

What it was that was in Hiltler's heart and soul that made him do what he did is a question that anyone who studies world events sooner or later comes to ask. This film gives an answer that is truly insightful and fascinating from the opening shot to the closing credits. No one who appreciates intelligent and original filmmaking should miss it.

5 out of 5 stars great premise, great film.......2007-01-05

I loved this movie. Every frame of it. It has a marvelous premise, Hitler as a young artist who might have chosen art over politics, which I'm surprised no one thought of before. I think any movie with this premise would have been worth watching, but also that it is unlikely this premise could have produced a great film. Here is does.
The movies two strongest points are the script and Noah Taylor's performance. I found the dialogue throughout to be intellegent, grimly funny and (almost) never pretentious. Two examples should suffice: A left leaning soldier saying most of his company was killed because his captain had a "von" in front of his name and Hitler's right wing mentor saying that artists are just clever enough to be unhappy. The movie has dozens of these lines, most of which are probably derivative, but all of which worked for me.
And Taylor's acting is inspired. His character is humorless and for me toally unsympathetic, but bottom line, he looks and sounds like Hitler. What would have killed the movie I think is an actor more recognizable and someone who either overplays the role or fails to be compelling. Noah Taylor does neither.
I wish the movie had a better title, but the title is accurate; this movie is not about Hitler. It is about the ineffectiveness of art, but even more the ineffectiveness of love and forgiveness. Hitler in the movie is not portrayed as a monster, but he is a creepy bore; the central mystery of the movie is why Max loves (not likes) Hitler. A victim himself, (an amuputee from the War) a sinner himself (he cheats on his wife, hurts his mistress, fails his parents) Max embraces Hitler as an act of redemption, and the pain of the movie of course is that we know his love will NOT work. There is never any real doubt that Hitler will chose effectual hate over ineffectual art and love; sometimes nice guys do finish last, or allow thier countries to fall into genocide. We admire Cuzack's Max for his humor and intellegence and we watch him lose while evil rises. This is one of the most pessimistic movies I've ever seen, but it is beautiful throughout. It moved me. It answers nothing, explains nothing; it's not "what if", but what is, sad, witty, lyrical. Watch it, then watch it with the commentary then watch it again.

    1 out of 5 stars Less than one star . . ........2006-08-21

John Cusack seems to have been delusional when he said that Hitler was portrayed in this film as a "human being," rather than as a "monster," a "cartoon caricature," or as "pure evil." That is exactly how Noah Taylor's character came across on the screen.

Let us assume that Hitler was the vilest, most sinister character in the history of mankind, the fact is that he conquered Europe in the 20th Century and might have conquered even more of the world if he had not succumbed to a Russian winter, just as Napoleon did.

There is no conqueror in history who was not ruthless, driven and tragically brutal, from Alexander the Great through the Caesars and Genghis Khan, and Napoleon, Stalin and Hitler. However, none of them would have risen to the pinnacle of power if they were anything like the bumbling idiot and creepy, inarticulate nobody depicted in this film.

Indeed, the Normandy invasion was dicey at best; and if we had not succeeded, the history of the world would have been far different than it is today. Clearly, an utter buffoon did not hold Western Civilization in the balance, much less the one portrayed in this film.

While Cusack is a fine actor, as his performance here reaffirms, surely he is better than lending his talents to being part of such a meaningless farce. The audience is kept waiting for Taylor's character to morph into a "conqueror," or even the faintest shadow of one, but it never happens, by design.

This movie was a waste of the money that it took to film the credits, leave aside everything else. Apparently it grossed $540,000 worldwide, yet it is surprising that it made a dime. Perhaps it would have been more believable if the Hitler character had been omitted altogether, and if the somewhat-interesting story of Cusack's "Max" had been expanded.

Finally, Taylor is a fine actor too, but this role does nothing positive for his career.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't bother...........2006-08-05

It's bad...pretty bad. And dull. I was expecting something different from this....it's almost unbearable to watch.

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE STRUGGLING ARTISTS.......2006-05-12

Absolutely riveting performance by Noah Taylor as the thirty-year old Adlof Hitler. The story is very uneven, however, but Taylor is perfect and brings the film up to a must-see five stars. You are there.

4 out of 5 stars Love Foreign Films.......2006-11-11

As a border-line autistic and mentally abused child, I just watched my childhood pass-by. I was never in my own life, just followed what happened to me, like watching a movie. My childhood was like boot-camp. Now that I'm older, I'm breaking out by reconstructing my new, more happy life thru understanding movies like this. Excellent movie, showing decisions/choices through logic that I am beginning to understand, versus instant obedience. Abandoned helped me understand childrens thought-process as it should have been for me. Good photopgraphy, color and direction. I would recommend to anyone, but you need to watch it closely without distractions. I have watched it 3 times already, and each time I understand the film and myself better.

5 out of 5 stars A Profoundly Disturbing, Resonant Film.......2006-04-01

'Torzók' ('Abandoned') is a brilliant Hungarian film written and directed by Árpád Sopsits that takes us back to Hungary of 1960 when the oppressive Communist rule altered the lives of everyone, especially children. The quality of the film is absolutely first rate from story to acting to filming to scoring. It may be a tough film to absorb and certainly not for the easily offended, but it is a perfectly honed gem of a film that deserves wide audience exposure.

Áron (Tamás Mészáros) is a young lad whose life seems warm at first until suddenly a disease of vision impairment attacks his mother and his parents divorce: the mother is somewhere in a hospital and the father (Sándor Gáspár) beats the boy and eventually turns him over to a rigid orphanage for boys run by cruel taskmasters. Áron undergoes initiation tactics by his fellow orphans but despite the beatings he is strong enough to survive. He is befriended when he has his nightmares about his mother's blindness by his friend Atilla (Szabolcs Csizmadia) and the two bond emotionally and physically. In this bleak atmosphere a little light comes from the beautiful young housekeeper Anya (Krisztina Somogyi) but even her contributions are compromised by the cruelty of the staff. There is one 'teacher' in the orphanage school, Nyitrai (László Gálffi) who has been reduced to his position as an 'imprisoned one' by the government and his sadness is offset by his playing his cello and studying his beloved astronomy. Nyitrai offers Áron solace and introduces his 'fellow traveler' to the glory of the stars, giving Áron a map of the heavens that Áron cherishes - his window to a world beyond the dark confines of his prison-like orphanage. He gradually wins over his fellow orphans and when Nyitrai, in the pit of depression for his life situation and the cruelty of the orphanage and the government, hangs himself. This horrid incident drives Áron to organize an escape from the orphanage, an event that is ultimately fractured with a death for which Áron feels responsible. And the end of the film fades into the many possibilities that event could trigger.

The atmosphere created by the stunning cinematography by Péter Szatmári defines the darkness that represents the orphanage well but also suggests the darkness in Hungary of that period. The musical score by Péter Fejcsik, Tamás Görgényi, Ferenc Toma, and Balázs Winkler is some of the most beautiful composed for the screen, making tremendously effective use of the cello and lower strings. In all, this is a brilliant piece of filmmaking, acted with depth in every role, and unveiling a portion of history and tragedy too often pushed to the background of our books. Highly Recommended. 4 out of 5 stars Abandoned.......2006-03-10

A fun little movie, but not really what I was really expecting. I was expecting more bed time from the main boy with the other boy that he was suppose to be fooling around with. I wasn't expecting any of the other kids to die on their escape from the orphanage.

    5 out of 5 stars Truely Abandoned.......2005-11-16

A new boy (Aron) has arrived at the orphanage. At first they pick on him but after awhile they decided he was one of them. The teachers inflict great abuse onto these children. Children who already have suffered and lost so much. Aron and Attila become close friends. When Aron has a bad dream, Attila lets him sleep in his bed. There seems to be more then just friendship between these two boys, but when you are young and have no one really to love, you often get close to those who have been kind to you. It was not what I thought it would be but I found it touching. So sad to see how unlucky so many children are and to see children who have so much and not appreciate all that they have. It is truely sad.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and impactful........2005-08-11

Like many in America, I'm one who enjoys venturing away from the all-too-common Hollywood films that are filled with flashy violence, gangs, killings, (mostly done with special effects).... and of course an unending supply of four letter words in nearly every situation imaginable.

Yet foreign films often tend to derive their impact more from a sense of 'realism', and that is precisely what this film "Abandoned" ("Torzok") does.

Most of us would like to believe that a Hungarian orphanage such as the one depicted in this film could never exist. But they have.... and likely still do.

Some of the scenes I've read about in other reviews of this film have often been referred to as sexual, and I hardly see this as such. Most of us cannot begin to imagine what it must be like.... as a very small child being tossed into a world of sheer abandonment from any sense of security or love from family. But that is precisely what these children represent.... and a kiss between two little boys who share a bed after one has had a horrendous nightmare - - I can hardly imagine why one would consider this sexual.

There are many chilling scenes in this film.... most notably the whipping of one boy by other boys (against their will).

I was also deeply disturbed by the way the orphanage leader lied to the blonde-haired youngster, by bribing him with a lie about the child's brother. This is something I've reflected back upon with this film, and it bothered me as much, if not more than the physical abuse we see. Because as devastating as physical abuse may be.... nothing can compare to destroying the trust of a child in a moment of utter despair and vulnerability, (not only was the boy naked, he needed a reason at that very moment to believe and to have hope), and this trust is literally shattered with a false promise.

After renting this dvd, I have hesitated to purchase this film... because of the haunting effect it has on our inner-being. It forces me to wonder why one child in this world is fortunate - - - and another's fate is doomed before he's even given a chance to truly live. Perhaps I feel guilt in being one of the "fortunate" ones.

Dear Readers and soon to purchase this DVD customer..

I'm really let down when I pop in the DVD into my DVD player. I was so eager waiting the arrival of this DVD at my home. The cover or the packaging is just like the normal of the others DVDs..

The whole let down of this movie is because there "ARE" "A LOT" of scenes has been deleted or edited.. Thumbs down... I still prefer the LD "Laser Disc" version where the sound and image quality is more superb than this DVD. If anyone just want to get hold of this DVD I'll recommend to purchase it but don't put so much hope on it..Like I did...

The dvd comes in three short movie..first the Gas Station...if without the deleted scenes you can expect more GOre.. secondly is the Hair.. which is my favourite...then lastly is the "the eye".. my dad's fav. Check it out yourself..

5 out of 5 stars this one is a fun movie .......2007-02-14

I remember when I first saw this one, John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper actually rocked on this one. Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame played in one of the segments though I did have a lot of reserves about him as a horror actor. It came to show he was much better of an actor in the horror genre than he was with science fiction, not knocking Star Wars but I've seen him in another Carpenter remake that also was good. The one I liked with him was the one about the eye being of sin, I am not giving the plot completely away now am I? But with that being said -- that was the most fun I've seen in a horror film. It was a TV movie I think, and when I've seen it my parents did have Showtime at the time they showed it.

    3 out of 5 stars OK anthology.......2006-04-19

"Body Bags" is three different horror stories in one, all told by "the Coroner" who works at a morgue. (and is played by John Carpenter himself) Basically, think of a cheaper version of "Tales from the Crypt." I don't want to sound accusatory, but there's no getting around the similarities. Half-decomposed being telling us horror stories and all with a dark sense of humor about it - considering this movie came out in 1993 and "Tales from the Crypt" first came on TV in 1989, its not difficult to assume there was at least some inspiration involved.

The first story is involves a girl's first night working at a gas station. Things are all right at first, but eventually things turn ugly - and I do mean ugly. The second story is more tongue-in-cheek, reminding me a lot of John Carpenter's more light-hearted work, and involves a balding man looking into a brand new hair growth formula. The final story involves a baseball player who receives an eye transplant and discovers it used to belong to a serial killer.

"Body Bags" starts out strong, but gets significantly weaker as the movie progresses. The first story was fantastic, setting the mood and keeping the audience hooked from start to finish - any one who has had a job entailing them to work alone will know how the girl feels. I also admit that (unlike other reviewers) I enjoyed the second story, and thought it took a humorous turn at the end. Besides, gotta love David Warner's line on the television commercial. ("Remember: it not only helped me grow my hair, I bought the company.") What I think could have helped the second story stand out more was if the last segment was a bit stronger. All it is in the end is the basic, "Oh no my [insert body part] used to belong to [insert killer name]!" I think it could have been a stronger story if a different route had been taken, like perhaps the victims' spirits were coming back thinking he was the killer. I kept watching it hoping something original would develop, only to find all my predictions come true.

I would watch it for some minor amusement. It's not a classic, but it's a decent lazy watch.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Cheesy Horror Collection.......2006-03-26

John Carpenter's Body Bags in a series of 3 stories all told by "The Coroner" played by of course John Carpenter (Escape From L.A and New York). First segment is called "The Gas Station" which is the shortest, where a young woman, played by Alex Dratcher (Passenger 57, Scorcher) who starts a new job at the gas station. She is actually going to school for pyschology. She soon becomes a little paranoid on the job and eventually when the night is over it becomes a little bloody. Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds), David Naughton (An American Werewolf In Paris), Wes Craven (Scream Trilogy), Peter Jason (They Live, Red Heat) and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead movies) also star in that segment. The second segment is called "Hair" which is the stupidest one out of the whole bunch which stars Stacy Keach (Escape from LA, Up In Smoke) who plays Richard, a man who doesnt want to be bald. So he goes to doctor David Warner (Titanic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2) who gives him the stuff to grow his hair back but after Richard gets his hippie hair, things dont seem right. Deborah Harry (BLONDIE) and Sheena Easton (Real Ghosts, Tek War) also star in that segment. The third and final segment called "Eye" which is the best one out of all three and the longest too about baseball player Mark Hammill (Star Wars, The Guyver) who gets in a horrible car accent and eventually loses his eye. Doctors implant him with a brand new eye but what Hamill soon finds out is that the eye itself was the former owner of a sick and murdering individual. Twiggy Lawson (Twiggy, Woundings), Roger Corman (its Roger frickin' Corman people know what hes done) and Charlie Napier (Austin Powers) also star in that segment. "The Mourge" segment also has Tom Arnold (Roseanne) and Tobe Hooper (Funhouse, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) in it as well. Some of the acting and script is very cheesy. Carpenter as the corpse like "Coroner" doesnt do anything original with it because it's bascially we've seen that in Tales From The Crypt and what not. So-so fun is had here.

    1 out of 5 stars Very Bad.......2007-06-25

As a person who have been living in Cyprus since 1967, I can easily say that, the content of this DVD doesn't reflect the realities of what was lived in Cyprus in 1974. It is a one-sided, nationalist reflection of most probably an ill personality. I am rating this DVD as 1-star. That single star is for the fact that, it is a very good example of how one can twist the realities of history according his desires.

3 out of 5 stars Review of Attila '74.......2007-05-21

The best way to put this is that this is a very good documentary of the events that transpired in cyprus in 1974.
The scenes were shot just after the conflict and the people that the filmaker speaks to have fresh memories of the events that transpired. There are some funeral scenes that are a bit intense and it seems that the mouners are playing to the camera a bit. Being a history buff , I thought the filmaker did a good job , got alot of the green line shots and did his best to show that Turkey was the evil invader in his opinion. I don't remember him speaking to many Turks though.

2 out of 5 stars One side of the coin.......2005-12-06

I am a displaced "greek" Cypriot from the North part of Cyprus.
This film fails to show what led to Turkey's invation nor any of the atrocities we commited against the weaker turkish minority which we oppressed for years. A turkish-Cypriot could find no job, not even as a waiter, and we forced them to live in ghettos, in terrible poverty.
IT WAS GREECE WHICH RAPED CYPRUS FIRST! In 1974 I was fourteen and I recall the first civilian casualties being from Greek tanks. Turkish tanks landed on the island five days later. This is never mentioned in our History textbooks. Most of us have been brainwashed through an intensely hellinocentric education where Greeks are always the good guys and the innocent victims, and through Greek Orthodox Religious Studies (an obligatory school subject since age five). Our schools breed racist Orthodox talibans who are totally intolerant of other religions, including other Christian denominations, and especially hostile towards Moslems. And when these talibans commit racist crimes (as in the 2005 murder of a turkish-Cypriot boy in Limassol) the press describe them simply as remote cases of mental illness instead of as mass products of our education system.
The church here is so influential that I consider my country as the "Iran of the Christian World". There even exist Iran-type church courts which nowadays (fortunately) deal mainly with Family Law cases.
The Republic of Cyprus is the only European Union country where authorities violate human rights (US State Department Report on Human Rights, 2006), the police torture citizens (Amnesty International Press Release on the torture of two handcuffed students by 12 policemen, April 2006), trafficking of women for prostitution is semi-legal, big scandals are never resolved, night bombers and murderers are seldom brought to justice, etc., etc. All this in half an island of 600.000 people with one of the highest percentages of policemen in Europe!
I don't think the situation in the Northern part is that bad. There is a lower crime rate, it is a secular state where moslem clergy have no political power and it does not foster the illusion of being a "European" country. People there are also more genuine and friendly.
Although the so-called "official" Republic of Cyprus is an independent member of the UN and the European Union it is in fact A PUPPET STATE OF GREECE:
1.We have been programmed to consider ourselves Greeks and not Cypriots. If Greece wins in an international contest in which Cyprus has lost, we celebrate as if our own country has won. We are ashamed to consider ourselves simply citizens of our country without any prefixes. If a native dares call himself a Cypriot and not a Greek, he is accused of being a traitor. (Same as if Austrians considered themselves Germans just because they speak the same language and have the same religion!)
2.Cyprus is the only country in the world without its own National Anthem (we use Greece's).
3.Our national flag is semi-official (it is subordinate to the Greek flag which is conspicuous on all government buildings, schools, churches, clubs, in the army, even in football matches).
4.Major political decisions taken by our governement must first obtain the OK of the Greek prime minister.
5.Our army is run by officers from Greece.
In April 2004 the United Nations, with the support of the United States, carried out a referendum for peace and reunification. The vast majority of greek-Cypriots voted No, employing all sorts of excuses (the president even wept on TV in his attempt to convince people vote No), while turkish-Cypriots voted Yes. The government, which is supported by the large communist-turned-nationalist party, celebrates the anniversary of this "No" as a victory against the almighty United States !!!
It seems that most of us believe that the ideal solution would be the construction of a Time-Machine that would take us back to before 1974 and reestablish greek dynasty in the island.
The process of deprogramming greek-Cypriots will be a tough one and cinema can make a huge contribution. This film however is biased and superficial. It fails to clearly show younger generations what really happened before and during 1974 so as to prevent similar events from happening again.
P.S.: I would recomend instead the highly acclaimed "Akamas" and any of the documentaries by Toni Aggastiniotis which the present government has done its best to censor. "Akamas" is the love story of a Greek-Turkish couple. Aggastiniotis is a "greek" cypriot intellectual who has chosen to live and work in the Northern part and his documentaries are very graphic, disturbing and educational. Another notable film-maker is Florides whose film "Kalabush" won a major prize in the Greek Film Festival. He has also been under criticism from the present nationalist government not so much for the content of his film but because he is married to a "turkish" cypriot woman.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - a slap in the face for those who done it!.......2005-10-24

You can always tell those who support the invasion as they are the ones who rate this poorly. This documentary shows what every Cypriot experienced and remembers of that terrible period.
It pushes history into the faces of those who are in denial. Just like the Germans try to forget the second world war, the Turks try to ignore that what they did was exactly as the title says: Rape Cyprus!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Politics of Film.......2005-09-11

Interesting how so many of the comments are not about the film itself, but about the self righteousness of perceived truth.
One thing for sure, this war, what led up to it, the consequences that it had for the people of Cyprus, is truly a forgotten place in world history, very few people know that it happened and what really ocurred.
For that, this film has value, and whether it pretends or not to be a sole source is perhaps not important--any film will represent a point of view.
Was it a good film as a film? I found it interesting because the topic is interesting, and there should be much more visibility of what happened, to both sides, during and after the 1974 war.
My perspective on war is this:
I was in a restaurant during the Falkans War, they announced that the British had just sunk the Argentinian Cruiser, and 800 Argentinians had died. The room erupted with cheering.
My companion, who was from Cyprus, said: "But think of all the mothers"
    The room went quiet.
This film does the same for me, for the people who suffered on both sides.
