SEASON 1 & 2 ROCK // 3 & 4 SO-SO // SEASON 5 = RUBBISH.......2007-06-19
I will start by saying my favorite Sci-Fi is classic Doctor Who. The ones from 1963-1989. I like to use that show to campare other sci-fi to. Problem is, those old Doctor Who episodes were usually 96-100 minutes long. Andromeda and most "modern" sci-fi Shows are limited to 45 minutes or so. Still there are 2 part Doctor Whos episodes that only ran 45 minutes. So whats my point in bringing all this up?
Well if you watched a 45 minute Doctor Who show and then Andromeda right afterwards, you would notice some very stark contrasts. Doctor Who was more of a true Sci- Fi show where the heroes relied on intellectual thought and improvisation to get out of 85% of the scrapes. The Andromeda Crew are much more apt to come down to fire all weapons or physical combat.
Is one of these tendancies better than the other? Not really. Its more of a personal preference. Why some people go to see the WWF and others go to see the Boston Pops. Obviously since I stated I like Doctor Who, I prefer the illtellectual sci-fi. This type of Sci-Fi relied more on building up suspense through some type of mystery that had to be gotten to the bottom of.
Moving on to strictly Andromeda. I like the first 2 seasons. By the way Harper is my favorite character, followed by Tier,(spelling?) Rev, Andromdea, Trance, Becka and the Captain is last. I like the tension between tier and Hunt. Rev was good to help balance the other characters. I preferred Purple Trance over the later version. Why you ask? Well you already had 2 alpha males. Tier and Hunt. PLus you had 2 alpha females in Becka and Andromeda as an android. So the writers decide to turn purple Trance into a 3rd alpha female.
Later, when Rev is gone, the only non alpha charactor is Harper. The drawback to me is that more and more the show becomes physical combat and ship combat. There is one episode in season 3 where the fight scene lasts almost 10 minutes. Think about that in a 45 minute show. The same episode then has part of the crew being chased by the Magog ships for another 10 minutes. Thats 20 minutes where the plot hasn't budged an inch. If your thing is fight scenes, then its great.
The charactors pretty much get boxed in during season three and none of them makes any personal growth. Sadly Harper, though more often then not, saves the crew with his genous, never gets much respect from anyone. In fact the crew keeps treating him like he is a teenager.
I think that the actor that plays Hunt was too big for the show and started to take over the writing to some degree. By season 5 he is even credited as a Producer. The same lines get worn out, like "It's never Easy", or "That can't be good". They were cute for one or 2 episodes but get worn out.
After 2 of my 3 favorite charactors got written out and Harper's role seemed to get diminished. I wasn't that sorry to see the series come to a sputtering end.
The 2 parts that ended season 4 are probably the best 2 episodes of the series, and would have been a good place to end it. In season 5 Harper is completely penned in and its mearly extended bar fights with not much imagination left.
Someone was wanting to know about the extras. They are excellent. Lots of interviews with the actors. Behind the scenes look at make up for Trance and Rev. Picture Galleries, Some explanation and clips of the CG effects. Insight from the producers and directors. Out takes. Pretty well loaded and for the amount of entertainment is a great value.
Like any series that runs 5 seasons, there are episodes so good you can watch them over and over. Then there are ones where you want to send the disc across the room. All in all theres more good than bad in this one.
Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda .......2007-06-08
Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is my favorite scifi sirie and is the best

Andromeda = Family movie night.......2007-05-21
My family has enjoyed gathering for family movie night to watch the Andromeda series. Great fun!
Great deal just for the first three seasons!.......2007-05-20
This is a show that had three great seasons, a tolerable 4th and the disastrous 5th. This set has all five at a very good price. I won't give any spoilers but suggest you start from season 1 and go on. It will provide hours of entertainment until you hit season 5. Then if you are really hooked maybe you want to watch it, but I warn you the last season is painful to watch and makes up in a negative way for all the fun you had with the first four!
For the price...Unbeatable!.......2007-05-13
WOW!!...Andromeda for under $100.oo, and that's for the complete 5 seasons. Do yourself a favor, if you are a fan of Sci-fi...Pick this series up.

Great, thoughtful sci-fi movie...weird packaging.......2007-04-18
I remember seeing this movie as a kid and really enjoying it. A feeling of nostalgia prompted me to add it to my DVD collection recently, and I'm very glad that I did. I just finished viewing this movie again after receiving my order from Amazon, and I'm pleased to report that even after a span of about 18 years, I still think this is some pretty good science fiction.
In terms of realism, the movie plays pretty fast and loose. You'll just have to take it for granted that Bill Paxton is a hardened scavenger living in the remains of a collapsed, post-apocalyptic Earth when what you actually see is Bill flying a little solar-powered airplane around for no apparent reason and then charming the pants off of every woman he meets...oh wait, I guess there was a reason for all the flying around.
What you essentially have here is a buddy/road-trip movie in a fairly compelling science fiction setting. Technology vs. Nature, Man vs. Machine, Duty vs. Self, it's all here and more. This really is some of the more thoughtful science fiction I've seen and enjoyed. The treatment of some of these concepts is a bit superficial and/or fuzzy in places, but hey, what can you expect: it's a 90 minute B-grade sci-fi movie, and even so, I loved it from start to finish.
On a side note, I must ask: why in the world is Bob Peck not shown or credited anywhere on the DVD packaging? I mean, his character (Byron) is only the central plot device of the entire movie, and he shares the lead with Bill Paxton...no reason at all to include his name or even a picture of the man on the DVD case, huh? Instead, we get busts of Bill Paxton, Ben Kingsley, F. Murray Abraham, and Mark Hamill on the front of the case, but for the life of me I cannot fathom why the pictures of these actors were not taken from the movie "Slipstream." I swear to God that the picture they used for Bill Paxton must have been lifted from Apollo 13 or Twister or something, because Mr. Paxton looks nothing like that for his role in Slipstream. Ditto for the other actors pictured. Mark Hamill is pictured on the cover with black hair and a black goatee. His hair in the movie, however, is so blonde it's almost white! Not that any of this packaging strangeness detracts from the movie, but I strongly suspect that Kraft Foods, Inc. may have been involved in the design of the DVD cover because it's definitely the cheesiest.
scifi.......2007-03-19
I saw this movie years ago and had it on vhs but now on dvd-the story is set in future the story was good plus I liked the character interaction I would recomend this movie to any sci fan.
NAVIGATING THE WILD FUTURE.......2005-11-06
Five Stars!! As a SciFi fan, this is one of my favorite movies. When the failures of mankind in managing the environment come to a tragic head, nature turns against us. The movie starts after a series of earthquakes, tidal waves, and such have virtually destroyed nations and economies and people are left to fend for themselves in enclaves. The major manifestation confronting mankind is a river of wind called the SlipStream, a virtual jet stream which has descended to the Earth's surface and literally destroys all structures. Major travel is by ultra-light aircraft and balloons between settlements.
Bill Paxton plays Matt, an opportunistic wanderer on future Earth who sees a chance to score some money by kidnapping a wanted prisoner with a bounty on his head. The problem is that he's already captured by the law in the person of Mark Hamill and Kitty Aldridge as Tasker and Belitski. Little does Paxton know that the prisoner is a special man and the two cops are not willing to give him up at all for a specific reason. The ensuing chase makes for a hoot of a SciFi romp through a fascinating future earth's places and people.
SlipStream boasts an outstanding cast with a riveting Mark Hamill as you've never seen him before, Bill Paxton in a great wisecracking role; Bob Peck as the object of everyone's desire; the comely Kitty Aldridge as one tough, trash-talking sexy cop; F. Murray Abraham and Ben Kingsley in terrific cameos; and others like Robbie Coltrane in a funny but ultimately tragic cameo. Plus, Eleanor David who steals every scene she's in. "SlipStream" is a frightening look into the possible awful near-future of Earth. Based on current events like the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, we may well be hurtling toward this type of future if we are not careful.
This movie has one of the best movie scores you will ever hear by the fabulous Academy Award-winning super composer Elmer Bernstein and please do sit through the credits to enjoy it all. I have it on my 'best of the best' cassette. And also sit thru the credits to enjoy the wild balloons. Five WINDY Stars.
NOT ALL THAT BAD.......2005-09-18
For what it is, SLIPSTREAM is not all that bad a movie. It's got interesting characters and some good acting, and the storyline is tolerable if you're not looking for depth. Watching it's a good way to pass a rainy weekend afternoon.
To clarify, in regards to Savanthar's completely inaccurate review:
Mark Hamill plays the lawman bad guy with the blond hair and beard. Ben Kingsley is the leader of the settlement who gets trapped under the big stone wheel. Bill Paxton is the long-haired hero who streals "Byron" away from Mark Hamill at the beginning of the film. And F. Murray Abraham is the mustached leader of the underground museum group whom Mark Hamill clocks in the head with his gun.
Enjoy.
All of the Actors Pictured are in the Movie!.......2005-08-06
I guess that reviewer on March 26, 2005 is really not familiar with American and British actors. Bill Paxton, Mark Hamill, F. Murray Abraham and Ben Kingsley are all in the movie and play important parts. Bill Paxton is the main actor but each of the aforementioned actors do appear, if somewhat briefly for some of them. I bought this DVD in 2004 and if nothing else, I enjoyed the scenery in the flying scenes.

Description
Stuart Conway (Sean Astin) is just your everyday scientist with a not-so-typical invention called The Slipstream Device, which allows him to go ten minutes into the past with the push of a button. When Conway decides to test his time-travel gadget, he stumbles upon a bank heist being perpetrated by Winston Briggs (Vinnie Jones), an Englishman with attitude. Can Conway save the day, his own life, and the life of beautiful F.B.I. agent Sarah Tanner (Ivana Milicevic)? What happens when ten minutes determines whether you live or die? Director David van Eyssen blends some astounding Matrix-like visual effects with a fun, exciting story that consistently delivers the thrills.
Customer Reviews:
Worst Time Travel Movie Ever.......2007-06-30
I love time travel movies; in fact, it's one of my favorite subjects. So naturally I picked this movie up the moment I saw it. After seeing Sean Astin embarrass himself by awkwardly flirting with the bank teller he's ripping off with the help of his time-traveling IPOD, I knew this was going to be an unusual movie.
At first, the poor acting and unbelievable dialog offended me. After a while, I had to laugh, it was so incredible. I'm still trying to figure out what made the group of backward English bankrobbers choose southern California for their heist, which drives the (ahem) plot. And the FBI agent's boss helps provide the most unbelievable scene of the movie when he alternates between shouting and sighing about the disaster. If there was more blood, I might believe this movie was a TROMA special.
I would say never watch this movie, but it's worth the belly laugh to see a shootout at the bank filmed with all shooters in a circle as the camera that's in the middle pans around repeatedly to the sound of harmonica music. Oh, and no one gets hit. And the (ha ha) touching scene when the head bankrobber's fiancee is dying and they start discussing the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
If it hadn't been a time-travel movie, I wouldn't have finished watching it. If you're really into badly done B-movies, or if you enjoy time travel regardless of whether the moviemakers adhere to that old "suspension of disbelief" theory, you might want to see this. As for myself, I wish I had the magic IPOD, so I could get that hour and a half back.
Not a Deja Vu - 1. 5 stars.......2007-06-15
This is worth a watch for the special effects and 5.1 sound at a bargin bin price ($1.99 or less). While the story is a good concept (Deja Vu is a like concept) - The acting is just not that great.
Once you get past the poor performances, the 5.1 sound is well done, and there are some pretty good special effects.
Overall - I would not watch this movie again....
The Worst Time Travel Film Ever Made!.......2006-10-06
If someone was firing a machine gun at you just several yards away, would you just stand there firing a revolver, in return? Most folks with common sense realize doing something so ridiculous will get you cut to ribbons! But not the filmmakers of Slipstream! I could not believe my eyes! And this was portrayed over and over again, ad nauseum! Memo to Hollywood: Machine gun wins over pistol, not the other way around. When being shot at make sure you have some sort of cover, too! Wow, did the filmmakers ever bother to take any courses in physics while they were in High School? I guess not!
Nor was there a single character I could empathize with! In fact, the story's hero was so shallow and obnoxious, it ruined any fun one could possibly get from viewing this dull, plodding, two-dimentional piece of trash!
An interesting take on time travel.......2006-02-05
I'd actually give this 3.5/5 stars. For the most part, the writing is fairly well done for such a film, though some elements feel a bit contrived.
The acting is surprisingly well done. Sean Astin pulls off the role as a socially awkward time travel researcher. Vinnie Jones works well as the sometimes menacing and sometimes lighthearted bank robber.
This movie keeps pace nicely and has some nice action sequences thrown in. The two bank shootouts are done interestingly, and the plane crash at the end was pretty cool.
I also really liked the soundtrack by Rob Lord. The music is matched with the scenes very well.
This is a good movie. It gives a perspective on time travel different from so many time travel movies out there, with entertaining characters and an easy to understand (if open ended) plot. Don't look for a lot of deep meaning here. But if you want a fun time travel movie, be sure to check this one out.
A COUPLE OF BURKES.......2005-10-06
PLEASE NOTE: REVIEW DRAWN FROM AN ADVANCED SCREENER COPY OF "SLIPSTREAM" - FINAL EDIT, EFFECTS AND CONTENT MAY CHANGE BEFORE RELEASE. THANK YOU.
Although featuring a novel and seemingly fresh take on the nature of time travel, often creative camera work (plus a few cribs and a few camera shadows that can take you out of the moment), and good performances coupled with some solid and effective "time effects" (one I believe might be a first for any time travel film involving a jet - very well done), SLIPSTREAM is a great concept, but a standard film.
The trouble is, that while it is a time travel film, it borrows too heavily not so much from other time travel films (another first I believe for a time travel film - and just how many times have I repeated that phrase so far?) but from Guy Ritchie and RUN, LOLA, RUN. Starting with the concept of being able to travel (or here: replay) back ten minuets in time, the film adds into the mix two bank heists, two love affairs, two deaths and two second chances with one final twist - it's all good stuff, but the bank robbers come straight from the Guy Ritchie stock and trade of British Bank Robbers (rough accents, tough talk and guns, guns, guns - so much so, that VINNIE JONES, the brains behind the second bank heist was in LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS), and RUN, LOLA, RUN type "what if, or turn this corner instead" pacing - all of which is not bad, but still manages to drag the picture down with the feeling of "seen it, done it, rented it, returned it, caught it on cable" vibe.
Part of the problem is that the concept of time travel here is so fresh that you can't help wishing the film made it more of its focus, as opposed to pushing it into the background (the whole gimmick is run from what looks like an iPod, which our hero Stuart Conway (Sean Astin) seems to drop or lose at just the right and wrong moments - which is a cheap (and very SLIDERS) way of generating tension). In fact, it seems as if Phillip Badger (both story and screenplay) focused too much on making a gangster heist flick with time travel instead of taking the time travel aspect of the story to the next level - which is frustrating because that level is right there, all it needed was just one nudge to turn this from a run of the mill heist flick into a true breakthrough in the genre.
I don't want to give it away, but listen carefully to Conway's thoughts and speeches on time and moments (and repeating them) and you'll get the idea.
The ending is choppy and confusing - but since time travel is involved it might actually make some kind of sense, but you will be left wondering just how and what happened to Conway, and what, if anything, the ending has to do with the opening - (check out his watch at the start of the film and compare it to the time travel device during the film). Overall, SLIPSTREAM will play with your time as well, but may not bear repeating - but for the time you spend there are more good ideas than bad and some fun to be had.

good potential- wasted.......2006-07-11
In this UK sci-fi, the apocalypse takes the form of a slipstream', powerful wind that scourages much of the earth's surface.
An on-the-run-for-murder android (Bob Peck - an excellent performance ; OK, I think he was pretty attractive RIP) is captured for ransom from 2 law officers (Mark Hamill and Kiity Aldridge). The law chases them to a religious wind cult and hidden civ of pampered rich folks. On the way, the android develops human emotions and falls in love.
Pros: Neat glider type airplanes. Great background score that would have helped if there were more panoramic flying sequences...Bob Peck is suave and attractive. Neat rescue sequence when 'Byron' (android) is tied to a large kite at the height of a windstorm by the cult for the "Winds to decide his fate".
Cons: Bad editing. Example is the shoot-out between Hamill, Kitteridge and a group of drug smugglers. Not enough flying over landscapes. Wasted cameos by Ben Kingsly and F. Murray Abraham and Robbie Coltrane. Confusing unexplained scenes: communal bath (?) scene (with clothes on?), boy with cataracts healed. Wasted character: Bill Paxton. Dialogue.

A small movie that should not be overlooked.......2003-04-25
Bill Paxton ("Titanic"-"Apollo 13") stars in this very amusing and intelligent adventure along with an impressive cast, including cameos by Ben Kingsley and F. Murray Abraham, that should not be missed. Not your typical adventure movie, the dialog is very smart and often very funny. Starting out average, it gets more and more impressive with every scene and explores a wide variety of social issues and relationships. Filmed in the rocky grass covered mountains of Turkey, the scenery is very dramatic and often unearthly. Taking place in the near future, Mat Owen (played by Bill Paxton) impulsively Steals a fugitive named Byron (Bob Peck) from a bounty hunter "Tasker" for the reward and gets more than he bargains for. Stuck together, while being chased by Tasker and his female partner, the two travel the country side and slowly become friends. Mat soon deals with the dilemma of having to turn in his new friend or miss collecting the reward. After meeting a variety of people and cultures, good times and bad, the two deal with a dramatic outcome in the end.

good rough draft.......2003-10-12
This is a movie with a wonderful concept, but very weak writing. It should never have been released with out at least three more re-writes (assuming it got any). The story is too loosly held together, and there are too many 90 degree turns in the story to make it a cohesive movie. It would be great to see what a dicent screen-writer could do with the story.
One of the most profound (and under-appreciated) movies.......2002-12-28
If you look on the "surface" only when first watching "Slipstream," it may seem like a somewhat cheesy low-budget movie, and I'm honestly embarrassed that the very first time I began watching it, I didn't look beneath the surface. I wasn't feeling well that night and hadn't seen a truly profound movie in ages; I didn't expect to see one with "Slipstream." (I never expect to see a profound movie nowadays because so few are produced.) There were a couple of times when I almost gave up on watching "Slipstream," but I'm so glad I didn't because it ultimately turned out to be one of the most profound movies I'd ever seen.
The story's almost an intellectual exercise, an intellectual parable; philosophical, ecological, social and scientific themes lie beneath the bare-bones exterior. With the exception of maybe one extraneous scene, nearly every line of dialogue, nearly every scene has some deeper meaning, is foreshadowing something that will happen later on in the story, and/or is symbolic of something in the real world.
The characters, dialogue and acting are just wonderful; Bill Paxton, Bob Peck, Kitty Aldridge and Mark Hamill are perfect in their roles. The interesting bare-bones sets and minimal special effects really enhance the story by not overshadowing it. Who would think the wind could be a fictional character? It is one in "Slipstream."
Most science fiction movies are about capturing the viewer's eyes. "Slipstream's" about capturing the viewer's mind and emotions, and it has certainly captured mine. I recommend "Slipstream" to everyone and only wish there were more movies like it.
Episodic chase picture with an actual theme.......2002-02-01
"We try to be perfect, but have to settle for being human. He tries to be humanm, but has to settle for being perfect."
In a world swept clean, Tracker (Mark Hamill) is the Lone Ranger, maintaining the last bit of frontier justice between the settlements and warring tribes. He and his partner are returning a rogue android for justice, when a bounty hunter (Bill Paxton) steals their prisoner.
The android, a very british sort, is the last person one would expect to commit murder, and I did miss who he killed and what his motivation for the crime was.
As they travel the Slipstream, a massive air-current, they pass various groups from the dregs of society (a semi-barbaric camp) to true primitives who worship the wind and eschew technology, to the last remnant of the cultural elite.
In the course of things, Byron, the android, learns about being human, but also that he never can be.
This movie could be compared to _Blade Runner_ both for plot and theme. But while Ridley Scott was content to give us fabulously cluttered mise-en-scene and ask the questions by symbolism, _Slipstream_ gives us minimalist sets, great actors, and asks the questions directly.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. The premise was good and innovative, the plot borrows from great traditions of both the cop movie and Huckleberry Finn. It also includes an homage to North by Northwest.
Watch it, but be ready to think.
Unique and interesting..........2002-01-24
This movie probably won't appeal to fans of the typical action/adventure formula. It's really a complex character study about someone trying to figure out what exactly it means to be human. The story is made all the more poignant by the fact that the character in question isn't human at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but wouldn't be surprised to see it get mixed reviews.
Slipstream.......2000-10-10
Bill Paxton has been in several of my most favorite movies. Slipstream was very unique and brought out a different Bill Paxton then we have come to know and appreciate. This movie had a much different flavor then most and to watch his interactions with the robot and then realizing the unusual qualities the robot personifies he learned to appreciate it's life and its desires about life and love.
Bill Paxton also had great characteristics in dealing with the law and women. He was touching and funny all at once.
I can't wait till they put this show on dvd 5.1 surround sound and widescreen. I can only imagine what the veiw will be and the senery... oh man hurry up and get this one on dvd fast!!! If you are an action fan you'll love this one. It is filled with action and excitement.

Jethro Tull - 'Slipstream' (Conheca A Amazonia) Running Time: 58 minutes.......2007-02-07
Believe this is actually a Brazilian pressed DVD, but rest assure, it appears to play fine on all DVD players. This concert is from the band's 'A' tour that took place in later 1980. I remember that, because I missed them and Tull had Whitesnake as support act. I mean, how cool is that? The ten song DVD is good, for most Jethro Tull fans. You might have seen a couple of the clips here, "Too Old To Rock 'N Roll,Too Young To Die" and the live version of "Aqualung" now and then on VH1 Classic's All Request Hour. Really enjoyed experiencing the flawless "Black Sunday", "Songs From The Wood" and the awesome encore "Locomotive Breath". There's also some 'concept' footage here that I thought was kept at the right length. Not too much, yet enough to add diversity to the overall producing the music DVD. Line-up: Ian Anderson-flute,guitar&vocals, Martin Barre-guitar, Eddie Jobson-keyboards&violin, Dave Pegg-bass&vocals and Mark Craney-drums. An absolute should-have.
Could Be Better.......2005-06-08
This is a strange concert. The actual footage is great; Black Sunday is played flawless, especially. However, the need to have stupid "concept" pieces ruined parts of songs, and songs are cut and left out and the special effects are awful; witness mirroed a thousand times during the first singing section of "songs from the wood" which is, by the way, began in the middle. if you get the A remaster, dont' bother with this.
Good DVD, but might as well buy it with the "A" CD.......2004-12-05
This DVD is also available as a bonus disc with the remastered "A" CD. Completists will probably buy this one also anyway, but for most fans, it's a redundant offering.
As for the DVD itself, Jethro Tull fans will love seeing the 1980 incarnation of the band, especially in the reliably excellent concert segments. Unfortunately, this video collection has always suffered from an abundance of completely unnecessary special effects. It was irritating enough in 1980, but 24 years later, the effects are not only irritating but laughably dated. Who wouldn't rather just watch one of the most visually captivating live acts of all time? Also, music videos have never been Ian Anderson & Company's strong suit, and the set pieces here are beloved to Tull fans mostly because we can smile at them in retrospect. I give the DVD four stars because Tull fans will definitely appreciate seeing and hearing Tull in all their mature mastery. If only this much attention had been lavished on the classic 1970s line-ups.
