A peak achievement of Japanese anime, Ninja Scroll is a propulsive mix of samurai action adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City). This is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh, and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language. (Students of Japanese language could pick up some useful expressions.) The plot sounds like a 16th century variation on the X-Files: An entire village has been wiped out by a mysterious plague and an anti-government conspiracy of invulnerable demons seems to be responsible. A wandering ninja, Jubei, and his female counterpart, Kagero, team up to defeat the plotters. Jubei is a classic reluctant hero, agreeing to participate in the mission only after being fed a slow-acting poison; the antidote will be supplied after he cooperates. And Kagero, a looker whose embrace is lethal, is a femme fatale with a difference that seems distinctively Japanese: sexual contact itself is poisonous, especially for a warrior with a pure soul. --David Chute

2 out of 5 stars Sex and Violence.......2007-05-20

And lots of it. I was kind of turned off. I'm new to anime films, and going off of Amazon listmania's I found this film as a top favorite of many. I don't really see why, there are far better one's out there. It seems there are many of these films that go out of their way to go "over the top" with graphic sex and extreme gore and violence. The rape scene of the main female character was particularly disturbing. In my opinion, the story really doesn't make up for it. By the time I figured out what this movie was even about I grew so disgusted with all of the character's I didn't really care who won.

Wonderful artwork is this film's only redeeming quality. Not worth the experience, though.

5 out of 5 stars Ninja Scroll.......2007-03-21

One of the best Jap Anime of all times, a true classic. Has the perfect plot and enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. Can't help but to get lost in it all, very hypnotic. All the characters have true personality, the snake woman is my fave by far!

5 out of 5 stars Intense, non-stop action at its best!.......2007-02-10

I can still remember the first time I saw this - I was on the endge of my seat from beginning til the end. From great fight scenes to excellent animation quality, this movie's got it all. There isn't much that hasn't been said about this one, but I would highly recommend it to anyone not apposed to bloody violent animation.

1 out of 5 stars A Classic? .......2007-01-20

The best part of the DVD was in the interview, where the director was asked what he had been trying to say about the role of women in Japan during that era. He replied, very sensibly, that the characters were ninja's and demons belonging to secret organizations, and therefore did not and could not say much about society at that time. Elsewhere in the interview he made it very clear as to why he DID make the movie - as a rape and violence fantasy to separate lowest-common-denominator teenaged boys from their parents' money.

All this had been obvious just from watching the movie. My co-watcher and I made cruel fun of the interviewer for asking such a dumb question. Imagine my surprise when I came here. For some reason, some who have actually seen the film are going to try to convince you that it is trying to say something about the oppression of women. Other than "It is fun to watch!" -- not really. Far from critiquing the treatment of women at the time, the heroine is portrayed as desiring the normal woman's role, but tragically denied it. The gratuitous rapes and other unpleasant sexual content are there to be enjoyed by creepy adolescent boys with anger issues - a lucrative demographic, to be sure, but not one renowned for its feminist sensibilities. While we are at it, the gory violence is not here to make a statement about the horror of war or the Plight of the Common Ninja. It's there because watching blood gush like a fountain all over the place is really reeaally kewl. If you want a film that says something, or even that you just want to pretend says something, rent RASHOMON or SEVEN SAMURAI or IRON frigging MONKEY fer crissake. If you want something pretty, violent, and stupid, but that will kindly refrain from scarring you for life, rent VAN HELSING!!! If you want to see buckets of blood and some horrid sexual content - but combined with actual characters, human emotions, and a plot even -- try QUEEN MARGOT.

NINJA SCROLL opens well, with a lone ninja hero (lacking in charisma a bit, but fairly solid hero material) on the one hand, and a band of demonic black clad horsemen riding through a lightning storm on the other. There are some lovely images; a heron by a river, the play of shadows under a bridge, a swordfight in a bamboo forest. But the demons are simply grotesque bad guys, with dull and earthly motives involving politics and power. Their "demonic" nature is expressed through their ugliness, foul language, and fondness for ripping arms off of unfortunate ninjas. They are not genuinely supernatural or otherworldly, just stupid, cruel and a bit disgusting. There are none of the eerie shivers one gets from Japanese folklore or (good) horror based on it.

The plot is your generic "Search for the MacGuffin" which you might find in filler episodes of KUNG FU or in a B Western. And what a mortal, money-grubbing MacGuffin it is. It is a disappointment to find out that those demonic Night Riders from the beginning were up to something so dull. The heroes fight a series of villains to move the action along, and the villains back-stab each other whenever an "unexpected" twist is needed.

The hero and heroine are pretty grumpy, which is totally understandable seeing as her friends all died and she was raped by demons, and he, you know, lost a tooth. They give the increasingly grumpy viewer somebody to relate to. Their relationship is not normally what I would consider good characterization, but without it there would be zero characterization at all, and so one clings to it as to a life raft. It also provides a few good laughs - such as when our hero demonstrates how NOT to administer first aid to a lady ninja. Alas, for the ending to have played as "moving" (as intended) rather than silly (as is) would have required a far more lyrical and less crass approach to the film as a whole. Not to mention that if my beloved and all my friends went splat, and I got raped by two different demons within a twenty-four hour period, I'd have something else on my mind than pining after the Grumpy Ninja Hero I'd known all of a DAY. Or moping about how I'm not a normal woman, when I should be worrying about all those demons after my posterior and thankful that my arms are still firmly attached. But I didn't write this thing.

My anime experience up till now has been mostly Miyazaki films and Adult Swim cartoons. The quality was consistently impressive enough that I presumed a "classic" of the art form would be . . . good. Instead, NINJA SCROLL is an uninspired potboiler, which would make a barely passable time killer were it not rendered unwatchable via the sadistic, pointless, and juvenile nature of its "adult" content. That I have seen worse is the best I can say for it. True, it has one seriously pretty heron, and I learned the phrase "Tokugawa Shogunate", which makes me feel slightly smarter. Considering what else I have stuck in my head now, it wasn't worth it.

5 out of 5 stars GHOSTFACE KILLER WONG CHEUNG SUAN.......2006-08-10

this movie stars the kung fu brother duo of jack & mark long, their great friend li yi min, the legendary simon yuen, jeannie chiang (a protege of jospeh kuo who really cant fight unless trained), the great wong brothers wong wing san & wong chi sang and ricky chi tien chee all 3 of them serving as fight choreographers. the story starts as the ghostface killer (mark long) killing off honorable elderly men but yet it is hard for him to search for the chess king (jack long). he kills one man in particular who happens to be a young man's father that young man being li yi min who swears revenge and in order to seek revenge he has to seek out a master. so he eventually finds one in a old kung fu cook old yuen (simon yuen) but he later learns all he can learn from old yuen and then seeks out the the chess king and later old yuen is killed by the ghostface killer which we dont see. the highlights of the film is the the flexibilty and magnificent kicking of mark long doing roundhouses and the splits so effortlessly. hands down he must be the greatest kicker from taiwan tying between him, alexander lo rei and chia kai, and he might be one of the best kickers of the genre. the acrobatics by jack long, li yi min and ricky chi tien chee are off the meatrack son. but there are 2 flaws the choppy editing and the switched scene near the end. this movie ran for 2 years just like 7 grandmasters another jospeh kuo gem. the fight scenes are mark long vs. li yi min's father, mark long vs. wong wing san as the pole fighter (one of the best fight scenes youll ever see), mark long vs. the martial arts teacher, and of course final fight between the long brothers then li yi min jumps in. overall this a top 20 if not top 10 pick it up you wont be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype.......2006-06-15

I bought this DVD based on the reviews I read here but after watching the movie I was very disappointed.

one of the things I didn't like was how the main villain would roll around and strike poses before and during battle (the guy would actually role around in the dirt just to strike a pose, then get back up and strike another pose). in a lot of the fight scenes the moves just seemed impractical and silly to be honest. the acting and kung fu performed by the main character and his rival classmate was just plain terrible and the plot was nothing new. just wasn't very interesting imo.

I wouldn't recommend this movie and doubt I'll ever watch it again. that's just my opinion though, seems a lot of others enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great...but............2006-05-23

This is yet another "classic" martial arts film with "old school" fight choreography and lots of gymnastics, acrobatics, and training sequences. There are some wire tricks but not of the "Crouching Tiger" kind. The fights are many and practically non-stop. The training sequences are fun to look at. However, the video and audio quality are sub-par. It would have been great if the quality was on the level of the "7 Grand Masters". Also, it is available only in full-screen so some of the action seems to fly off the screen. What a travesty. For now, this will have to do until someone gives it the remastering it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars old "skool" kung fu for real.......2006-05-12

I rushed out to get this flick based on the hype!! I was truly impressed with this one. It was entertaining from the start to the finished,,great story line,,,and the many fight scenes, there are absolutely no boaring parts. If you walked away at anytime, more than likely you may have miss something sweet!!!! I now have two new martial arts hero to my collection, Jack and Mark Long,,simply amazing!!! I said it before, and will say it again,,,3 words for this flick "TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH!!

This flick is easily up there among my top 5 best flicks ever, I would not be surprized if this movie is not even better than 7 Grandmasters,,which has always been my personaly favourite!!!

This is definately a must have,,no matter what the cost,,there will be no dissapoinments!!

4 out of 5 stars I will admit that I do feel horrible that I have to give this VERSION of this movie a 4/5. THE REAL MOVIE IS EASILY A 5/5. .......2006-03-17

I have the tai seng version of this, and I don't know what they did with the editing, but I have never seen anyone try so hard to ruin a movie. The scenes are so jumbled, and it is so obviously not 90 min. on the dot. If that were the only problem, I would be fine with this dvd, they discussed on the commentary how they thought that some of the scenes were overcut most likely by the american distubtor. I know joseph kuo movies, and I know his cuts, he does it a lot, but somebody didn't like his cuts and decided to edit this himself. I am going to do some damage for sure......ahhh, at least I gotta see the ghostface killer and the great jack long going at it in this movie again.

The tai seng version I have is good sound and picture, and the commentary deserves at least a 4/5, it has bobby samuels doing it, so I just thought it was gonna be better, but it was pretty good.

As long as this is tai seng and released in 02, it will be the commentary version, the only reason I can recommend this. the fights are great, but they mean a whole lot more when you have all the emotion in them.

1 out of 5 stars You know an anime is bad when you forget that you have it!.......2007-06-11

Blood Reign is one of the worst animes I own. Together with Ninja Resurrection and Spectral Force. This really is a godawful anime. To clarify one thing. I'm not even going to touch the animation because animation to me is the least factor when watching an anime. I say this anime sucks for the reasons I'm about to mention. First the story. What story? It opens with dead bodies everywhere full of stab wounds and arrows, then a bunch of monsters start tearing through the bodies. You get no back brief of the conflict. Its as if you already know whats happened. It talks about,"the innocent blood is spilled to feed the yoma". Wow it just told me a whole lot.
Then you have the plot. Which is boring as can be. The main character is after his childhood friend that stuck a shuriken in his eye and just left. So he's looking for revenge.

Character development is lame as all hell. The female ninja who is later introduced served no purpose whatsover except to cry and scream. The monsters and the battles with them is ok at best. And the situations that arise later make almost no sense. A guy gets blinded by a female ninja who was protecting herself from him. He blindly walks into the water. The sky starts to go crazy. Then a white horse with red eyes appears in the ocean. The main character says its an illusion. This illusion runs across the water, kills the man who was blinded, drinks some of the blood from the other dead men. Then kicks the main characters a**. Some illusion. Then Oda Nobunaga appears with his army and completely obliterates another clan. War over. You dont hear a peep from Nobunaga ever again.

The ending and the final battle wasn't really that great either. I'm sure this review sounds like a mindless rant but I can careless. Lately I have been trying very hard not to give out 1 star reviews and search very hard for the positives in an anime. But I really cant find any here. I see the reason now why I haven't watched this trash in 3 years. Skip this anime. Dont waste your 80 mins. watching this. You want to see ninjas? Check out Basilisk, Ninja Scroll or Wrath of the Ninja. You want a good story. Check out Princess Mononoke, Shura no Toki, or Samurai X. Dont walk, run from this anime.

5 out of 5 stars better then average.......2005-08-26

Not perfect but, great mystery surrounds the whole movie because the Yoma are never fully explained. There could have been more conflict and fighting; this is no Vampire Hunter D or Ninja Scroll. The artwork is beautiful and the Yoma themselves are interesting, taking the forms of regular animals on earth and still containing their supernatural abilities.

1 out of 5 stars Nubidu's Anime review.......2005-08-02

This movie blows. 2 episodes only - which will leave you uncertain about where this is going and where it all began.

3 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled promise..........2004-11-15

Much in this production promised well, but alas this promise goes unfulfilled...
The film has a fairly strong sense of style that is kept up throughout, but is lacking in substance. The plain fact of the matter is that I was rather bored with it - from beginning to end. Yes, there were some good things, but these were just not enough to chase away the strong sense of ennui... which is remarkable considering that there is so much going on that really SHOULD have been interesting...

As just about all the othe reviews have mentioned, the animation is dated though it certainly must have seemed impressive at the time (which was only 1989 - surprising how much the average quality level of anime in general has gone up in the following decade).

In the sound department, there is a fairly nice stereo soundstage for the effects. The music on the other hand left much to be desired - including some unfortunate testaments to the quality of 80s synthesizers (may they rest in pieces!).

In conclusion, this effort was simply wanting. I would really rate it with two stars, but the seriousness of intent on the part of the makers that is so evident throughout earns them another star - albeit somewhat grudgingly.
If only they had been able to fully realize their vision..

2 out of 5 stars Blood Reign.......2003-01-03

Ator is way cooler. This was just dumb. But it did have a topless chick in it. And laser arrows.

2 out of 5 stars Oh dear god!.......2005-04-21

No figure in the horror film genre is as divisive as Lucio Fulci. After watching one or two of his films, viewers tend to move into one of two camps. One side hails Fulci as a master of terror, a man who upped the gore quotient in his films while creating wonderfully atmospheric pictures. For these people, Fulci is right up there with the likes of Dario Argento as one of the best filmmakers ever to emerge from Italy. The other camp sneers at these claims, pointing to the plodding pace of his films, the use of extreme gore to camouflage plot holes, and the director's inability to draw good performances out of his cast as evidence of mediocrity. Initially, I enjoyed Fulci's films, specifically "Zombie," "City of the Living Dead," and "The New York Ripper" because I did not know any better. When I came on the scene, you went to Fulci to feed your craving for gore. What a difference a few years exploring the genre makes! While I will not go so far as to remove Uncle Lucio from my play list altogether, I have seen enough of his films to realize he is not a cinematic genius. He is at best a good director, at worst an abysmal one, and there are plenty of examples of bad filmmaking in this director's filmography.

In "Conquest," Fulci moves beyond the horror medium into the world of sword and sorcery, with decidedly mixed results. The movie begins with Ilias (Andrea Occhipinti) receiving a magical bow that shoots arrows made of sunlight from some guy that looks like a haggard Santa Claus. His mission, if he chooses to accept it, is to go forth into the world and defeat the evil Ocron (Sabrina Siani) and her violent minions. Ocron is a rather nutty gal; a woman who wears a mask, struts around in the nude, and spends most of her time either on top of a mountain uttering cryptic spells or rolling around in a bed full of snakes. Yeah. Ilias, whose resemblance to Keanu Reeves greatly frightened me, soon runs into trouble with Ocron's goons. Just when we think our boy is down for the count, a wanderer named Mace (Jorge Rivero) enters the picture. He rescues our hero and thereafter joins him for a series of boisterous adventures culminating in the final showdown between Ocron and the sunlight bow. Oh yeah, in order to stop her inevitable confrontation with the thickheaded Ilias, Ocron hires some wizard named Zora (Conrado San Martin) to bring the guy down. That's about it as far as the plot goes.

Fulci packed "Conquest" to the rafters with truly mind-deadening dialogue, bad acting, ridiculous situations, poorly choreographed fight scenes, gore, zombies, pustules, nudity, fog, and cheesy special effects. The cinematography--a truly bizarre blend of smoke and shadow that tends to obscure most of the action unfolding onscreen--either evokes the atmosphere of a lost age or cheap film stock bought on clearance. I'm going with the latter. As for the scenarios the two face on their journey across this forbidding land, just think endless hand-to-hand combat scenes interspersed with minimal do-or-die dialogue written by a kindergartner. Mace kills an innocent wayfarer for food. Ilias and Mace battle Ocron's foot soldiers, guys dressed up to look like Chewbacca and who perform these ridiculous acrobatic leaps and flips. Arrows shot at our heroes during one scene look like the editor marked them in on the celluloid with a pencil. Ilias falls ill and Mace nurses him back to health. Zombies rise out of a swamp for no other reason than to have zombies rise out of a swamp. I think what I'm writing here is rather disorganized, but that's what the movie looks and feels like. Things just happen for no reason, and then we move on to the next nonsensical event.

I will say the gore is good. In fact, it's safe to say that the only thing "Conquest" has going for it is the blood and guts. It's nice to see the trademark Fulci grue transferred into another film genre--I'm still waiting to see an equivalent amount of gore in a Meg Ryan romantic comedy--so fans of his cavalcade of horrors will likely find something to admire here. We get heads bashed open in sickening close-up on two separate occasions. We get Ilias covered in pustules that seem to ooze for minutes at a time. We get a poor wretch torn in half. We even see Ocron dining on a most unusual delicacy. Yes sir, at least "Conquest" contains enough sauce to somewhat obviate the more painful aspects of this clunker. And as much as it pains me to say, "Conquest" is a clunker in the same league with the director's dreadful mob picture "Contraband" which, if memory serves correctly, came out a year or so before this film. An attempt to cash in on the highly popular sword and sorcery phenomena of the early 1980s, "Conquest" succeeds only in embarrassing anyone associated with it. Even Claudio Simonetti's score couldn't save this train wreck.

I'm not going to give the film one star, though. I just can't bring myself to do it, mainly because I do like many Fulci films and also because the DVD isn't half bad. You can tell Blue Underground tried to clean the print up, and they threw in a couple of trailers, a Fulci biography, and artwork stills to boot. If you're preparing to embark on an odyssey through the Fulci filmography, I don't suggest starting here. Begin with "Don't Torture a Duckling," "Zombie," "City of the Living Dead," or "House by the Cemetery" and work your way down from there. I'm afraid if a novice started here, he or she might never watch another Fulci film again!

2 out of 5 stars My 'Temple of Secrets' still aches after this one..........2004-10-21

Lucio Fulci...while many may not be familiar with the name or his work, he has developed a dedicated and even hardcore audience, mostly due to the extremely graphic nature of the horror films he made from the late 70's into the 80's. What some may not know are those films only made up part of his repertoire, as he also was involved in thrillers, musicals, comedies, westerns, and even a sword and sorcery picture, titled Conquest (1983). This Italian/Spanish/Mexican production (it states this in the beginning during the credits, and, for some reason, it didn't inspire a sense confidence in this viewer), directed by Fulci, stars individuals I've never heard of, including a fairly well muscled Jorge Rivero (Rio Lobo), the very effeminate Andrea Occhipinti (Bolero), and the very naked Sabrina Siani (sounds like a western...The Muscled, the Effeminate, and the Naked).

So what is the film about? I really wish I could say with a degree of certainty, but the plot, what there was, was pretty convoluted. There's a young warrior named Ilias (Occhipinti) who, prior to leaving his village (I guess to go off to become more manly), is presented with a magical bow, one that shoots arrows made of pure light, that is once the user figure out how to activate that feature. Until that happens, it can be used to shoot regular arrows. Anyway, Ilias goes off, and meets up with a nomadic wanderer named Mace (Rivero), whose main choice of weapon is a very poorly made pair of nunchucks, or, two harden pieces of wood attached by a length of rope. While they're running around bonding and stuff (ew), a local evil sorceress named Ocron (Siani), I thought it was Okra, as that what it kept sounding like throughout the film, learns of a man with a strange and powerful weapon (the bow...I find it difficult to believe few people in this world had not heard of a bow and arrow, probably one of the earliest forms of ranged weapons) and knows she must possess it for her own. Also, she's been having dreams regarding her own demise at the hands of a faceless warrior, one who shoots her with an arrow. In an effort to prevent these premonitions from becoming a reality, she sends her various minions to retrieve Ilias and his weapon, which leads up to a some what climatic final battle between good and evil...a common theme in the genre, a hero, or a group of heroes, suffers adversity to rid the land of a powerful enemy blah, blah, blah...

I've seen a lot of films, and I've seen a number of films within the sword and sorcery genre, and I have to say Conquest falls a bit short in comparison. It does meet a number of requirements within the genre (heroes, magic, good, evil), but lacks in the execution. First thing you'll notice is nearly the entire film is shot with a sense that someone smeared Vaseline on the camera lens, giving everything a hazy quality sure to induce headaches early on (the film runs 92 minutes). Also, Fulci must own stock in a company that sells fog producing machines, as nearly every scene also was inundated with a heaping helping of smoke, further obscuring the viewer's ability to see what's going on...the acting isn't horrible, but the dialog is...an example...Ilias and Mace are trapped in a cave and Ilias spots a snake, to which Mace responds, "He's harmless if he doesn't bite you." Well duh...if a ten-ton boulder was suspended over my head with a piece of twine, it would harmless unless the string broke...the characters themselves are goofy and lacking any sense of likeability. An example of this is Mace and Ilias (our two heroes) are traveling together, and Mace is learning how to use the bow. They come across a lowly, completely non-threatening hunter, carrying a dead animal, and Mace shoots and kills him and they take the dead animal so that they may eat it...how very heroic...oh yeah, Mace seems to have a psychic link with animals, and doesn't kill them, but has no problems killing others who've killed animals and taking their food to eat for himself. Ocron (the evil sorceress) sports a metal, horned bikini bottom and no top, and spends a lot of time having intimate relations with snakes (ew) and eating the brains of her recently killed victims (you see, the head is the `temple of secrets' and it's also quite tasty, or so I've heard). She commands odd group of henchmen, including wolfmen, regular men, and various animated zombie-like characters, all enabling her to lord over a relatively small group of savages. Most all the women in the film are topless, which helps, but is entirely gratuitous, serving no real purpose other than to take your mind off the fact the film is so weak in general. The directing ranges from passable to poor, including pointless POV shots, stupid slow motion that only serves to drag the run time out much further than needed, and ineptly choreographed fight scenes. I found the mostly electronic musical score to be highly annoying, monotonous, and inappropriate. Fans of Fulci's stylistic approach to visceral gore will enjoy the inclusion of a smattering of graphic scenes here (brains, puss leaking sores, gore spurting wounds), but it's nowhere near the levels in his horror films, so they may be ultimately dissatisfied. People not familiar with his penchant for splattery will probably be put off and find it hard to watch.

Blue Underground presents an exceptional widescreen print transfer on this DVD, despite all the funky cinematography. Special features include two theatrical trailers (U.S. and international), poster and still galleries with lots of good-looking pictures, and a fairly comprehensive and informative biography on Lucio Fulci. All in all, unless you're a Fulci completist, you might want to skip Conquest, as its' appeal is extremely limited, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars This ain't Lord of the Rings, but a great Cult Classic!.......2004-09-28

Oh Fulci! What a confusing movie you made. The acting is bad! the characters are terrible! the plot.......what plot? Nothing made sense! If you're a long time Fulci fan you gotta see this one. If you're new to Fulci's film...wait for awhile and watch these titles:

The black cat
Zombie
The Beyond
4 for the apocalypse
Contraband
New York Ripper
Don't Torture a Duckling
City of the Living Dead

Just to name a few of the classics. Conquest may not be a consider a Fulci Classic, but it sure become a cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars The craziest of the Conan rip-offs...........2004-09-22

True, sword-and-sorcery is a particularly stupid genre. It was only done once well, and of course I'm talking about Robert E Howard, and then a few writers like Moorcock, Leiber, and Karl Edgar Wagner came along and created characters that transcended the genre. We had one truly good movie--the original Conan--and lots of imitations. And we also had sword-and-sorcery exploitaion flicks, movies that actually ADDED to the amount of gore and sex already in Conan. This, of course, is a good thing, and Conquest is the whackiest of the whole bunch. Hell, Fulci even throws in zombies. The evil wizard chick wears nothing but a gold mask--that's right, she's NEKKID the entire movie. And for Fulci fans, the main character has an inverted mark of Eibon on his forehead, from Fulci's horror flick The Beyond. This movie rocks.

CLASSIC.
If you didn't know about it you are probably dissapointed with all of the anime you've seen, with the exception of the Basilisk series.

From a teen to an older person and everyone in between won't be able to deny the genius of this movie.

A must have for any type of DVD collection. College students, or anyone with roommates... lock this one away.

5 out of 5 stars awsome for psp!.......2006-10-07

i have no clue what the above writer is talking about. The umd is near perfect picture quality but yes there is no trailers for anything else and its only in english but umd capasity is not as big as dvd so that is to be expected. No that dosent make up for subtitles or the japanese laguge as i have 2 with both of them so i do agree that this umd is low quality as far as extras go but hey, its for psp.

3 out of 5 stars Great anime - bad presentation.......2005-10-17

Manga has spent very little effort to bring this classic anime to your PSP. The only audio track is the English dub, so therefore there are no subtitles. Worse yet, the movie is presented in a widescreen format -- the original movie was not widescreen, so presentation in this format just cuts off the top and bottom of the scene.

Image quality is soft, and looks to be a straight conversion from the poorly done DVD Manga brought out a few years ago.

I happen to ketch this movie on the Action Network one night and laughed myself to tears. It's absolutley ridiculous. It's kind of dry for a bit, but the scene in the forest makes the entire movie. A must see.

3 out of 5 stars Good for some laughs........2005-07-26

If you've ever enjoyed watching cheesey martial arts flicks just for the laugh value, this is definately one worth checking out. It has some of the silliest dialog, action sequences, and plot devices (including ninjas that turn into piles of grass that scurry away) I've ever come across.

My friends and I enjoy pulling this movie out from time to time just for the comic effect.

3 out of 5 stars Shaolin draging-on.......2007-03-22

Not to blame the movie but this was in very poor quality, my friend has paid a buck for some in better viewing condition. This movie had good fight scenes worthy of watching. The time it took to get to the actual challenge the story is based upon I flipped to some cartoons to kill the time. Feeling guilty about missing scenes while watching cartoons I scanned back and watched the skipped over scenes, I didn't miss anything.
The fight scenes make this movie worth it, fast forward through the rest.

4 out of 5 stars No story, like I care.......2006-11-12

When this movie started out I didn't know if I was going to be able to sit through it. The story line, well there is no storyline. It is just Japanese Shaolin vs. Chinese Shaolin, that's it. Lo Rei is the top fighter on the Chinese side and Alan Chui(baddie in 7 Grandmasters and Last Hero In China) leads the Japanese. Since there is no story, the fights are the only thing to talk about. Lo Rei and Alan Chui have a great match against each other. The highlight of the film is a martial arts tournament against the opposing sides. First up is a grappling match between Lo Rei the huge muscleman senior monk from Shaolin vs. Lama. In the second match director Robert Tai steals the show against a high kicking opponent. Tai has a sweet technique where he uses beads as a weapon. This scene is literally worth the price of admission alone. It doesn't hurt that Wong Chi Sang has an amazing weapons fight also. You may recognize him as the first guy that Lo Rei fights in Shaoolin vs Lama and the first guy Ghostface Killer fight in Mystery of Chessboxing. There is also a pole fight that contends with any fight scene in the entire movie.

I think that if they would have put a little more time into the story and put some emotion into it, there is no way I would not be able to give this a 5/5. But it is just mindless fight scenes, fine by me.

I have a bootleg VHS of this and it is only like 70 minutes. Anyone know if a company out there distributes the full version?

3 out of 5 stars Old Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-02

This flick turnd out not to be what I expected,,,however, I walked away entertained by Alexander Lo Rei!! It was just an o.k flick,,,many fight scenes and the choreography satisfactory. If you love you old school kung fun,,,you're safe with his one!!

2 out of 5 stars Horrid English dubs, poor quality..........2003-01-12

I collect martial arts films on DVD. This one is a bomb and a half. The dubbed voices don't even match the actors and they're so bad you can't stay interested in the movie. The movie cuts out to blackness quite a few times, which is really annoying. The picture fades from color overkill to hardly any at all. I bought the Lion Video version. I have other Lion DVD's that are great, but this one shouldn't have been put out like it is.

3 out of 5 stars Good Fighting, Poor Editing........2002-04-13

The editing was poor to say the least. The film just shut down and went black for a few moments while the sound kept going. However, I must say in only blacked out four-five times, and only once in an interesting point. The color went a little hazy at times but would quickly shift back to normal. Would I buy it again? Yeah. Good flick with cool Kung-Fu. Without the editing burps, I would have given in a four.
