Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon

Love it.......2007-06-24
Kinda historical, more for eye candy and a rush. Overall, a really cool movie. If you like Count of Monte Crisco you will love this.
Rather enjoyable movie.......2007-06-15
I've enjoyed this movie several times and know that it is a family hit. It shows the contrast of good and bad decisions and how they can effect an entire kingdom. The honor and loyalty of the royal guard to the people in conflict to their responsibility to their king.
I thought the acting was very good and convincing as well as the scenery and the storyline was good. It had my interest and I was left satisfied with no real unanswered questions at the end.
I would recommend watching this movie, and even adding it to your library.
"One For All, and All For One!".......2007-04-25
This is a magnificent movie and would be a great addition to anyones' collection. The actors do an amazing job portraying the musketeers in this version of the Man in the Iron Mask. The sounds and scenery add to the wonderful ambiance created in this film. I have owned it since it came out and still enjoy watching it every time. It has one of the greatest endings of any movie I have seen, every director should strive to have an ending like this.
I guess all I can say is, if you don't at least see this movie you're missing out.
bad acting, bad script, terrible movie.......2007-04-18
This is an unsophisticated, badly written, terribly acted movie that just doesn't work. I can't imagine what the reviewers who like it were thinking. DiCaprio is ghastly. None of the actors can read any of the lines convincingly. The damsel in distress has the most childish, silly voice.... Awful movie.
" Nobility Is Born In The Heart ~ The Greatest Mystery Of Life Is Who We Truly Are" .......2007-02-19
After a cursory scrolling through the previous 190 reviews on this film I've come to the conclusion that the '98 release, `The Man in the Iron Mask' is one of those movies you either love or hate. As for me, I love it!
The scenery is exquisite, the soundtrack inspirational and uplifting, the storyline epic and filled with pathos and the cast is amazing. Gerard Depardeieu (Porthos), John Malkovich (Athos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Bryne (D'Artagnan) breathe new life into Dumas' musketeers mythos. Seeing these four legendary warriors gallantly charge King Louie's muskets as they fire from point blank range was as heroic a scene as I've ever seen captured on film. It gives me goose bumps just to think about it.
As for Leonardo DiCaprio, he is magnificent in the dual role of King Louis XIV of France and his twin brother Philippe. His ability to appear so arrogant, hateful and despicable as King Louie one minute and transform himself into the timid, emotional and caring Philippe a moment later is truly amazing. This is by far my favorite DiCaprio performance.
This is a film that can be watched over and over again without losing its emotional impact on the viewer. 'The Man in the Iron Mask' is a keeper, I wholeheartedly recommend that you add it to your personal DVD library.

A GREAT START!.......2007-06-28
I hope to see more Marvel movies like this of all the charactors. This was a good intro to "IronMan" for those who know very little about him or his origin. For those who are VERY familiar with the comic and story it was a little skinny. But all in all it was fun and a good start. Hopefully it is the beginning of many more to come.
Broken Promise.......2007-06-05
Long on story short on action. The other two Avengers movies were put together so well, that it makes for this movie to be a let down.
abysmal........2007-06-05
alot of valid points here already, but, in a nutshell....it's abysmal.
it works, neither as a childs, nor adults, movie.
if you were in any doubt up to this point, rest assured, use your time & money elsewhere.
im a reasonably well read comic book / graphic novel fan & have enjoyed SOME movies in the genre...this being somewhere right down near the bottom.
i lasted 41 minutes. enough said.
Wasn't that good.......2007-05-30
I was disappointed by this film. It starts out great but devolves into a robot bash rock-em/sock-em. The story line is both confusing and not memorable. I watched the movie and cannot remember nothing about it at all. It's really not that good of a film. It could've been much better.
I would not recommend it to anyone but hardcore Ironman fans
Outstanding script.......2007-05-20
I published a little book about Iron Man twelve years ago -- "Exactly 12 cents and Other Convictions" (long past its prime at Amazon, though still listed) -- and have thought quite a bit about the mythos of this character since buying Tales of Suspense 39 new in the drug store forty-four years ago. Notwithstanding the broad range of opinions expressed here by other reviewers, for me the script for this new animated Iron Man feature was unexpectedly superb. A complete lack of imagination is what qualifies this as a B movie. Thankfully, this snowy adventure about a boy and his dogs is charming enough to entice the kiddies. Charismatic MacKenzie Astin plays a teenager trying to save the family farm by entering a 522-mile sled-dog marathon. Except for Astin, the lusciously scenic background has more depth than most of the characters. This is so predictable you could take a nap and miss nothing except a few rousing scenes in the 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul sled race. Although this is visually more appealing than most family fare, one wishes more attention had been paid to the script. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Awesome Family movie.......2007-06-25
We love this movie. My 4 year old especially loves this movie. We watched it over and over again, and I never get tired of seeing it. My son loves this movie so much that he is "Iron Will" He acts out the entire movie. He uses his wagon as the sled, puts his snow pants and boots on, has a bag he packs for his trip across Canada and US. He has even changed our dogs name to Gus (the lead dog in the movie) and tried to hook her up to his wagon to pull his sled, but no go!
It is a great "feel good" movie. It is about the courage and determination a 17 year old faces running a 500 mile dog sled race alone, before televsions and high-tech equipment - just shear will! It truly is an amazing movie.
There are a few scenes involving death and dying that I thought my 2 and 4 years old would have a problem with, but it didn't seem to bother either of them. I highly recommend this movie.
Iron Will.......2007-05-20
Iron Will This by far..is a Great rugged outdoor type film!! lots of snow Scenes heart pounding action all the ..way!
I personally loved this ..Movie Dog sledding at its ..Best.....
IRON WILL.......2007-05-12
It is very refreshing to watch a movie that is both entertaining and heart tugging. I love animals or movies that show interaction between animals and humans with a personal relationship. This movie did a wonderful job that showed there is communication between the two. There is no such thing that animals are dumb or do not have sense of reasoning or acting or reacting. This is a classic example of just this. Thank you.
Iron Will.......2007-04-11
Great movie.....We watch it again every year or so and always enjoy it. Excellent family entertainment.

Iron Will (Clam)
During 4 weeks of fine snow, my grade 6 class often had "dog" sled races for phys-ed, as the teamwork warm-up for tobogganing. They loved it and were eager to learn about dog sled races; the Iditarod and others. It even integrated into our unit on Native peoples. As a finale, when the snow was fast disappearing we watched Iron Will. They were impressed with the determination and optimism that Will carried throughout the challenge.

American Indians were a "cool" factor in 1970 cinema, the year A Man Called Horse made its vigorous, feverishly real, and occasionally shocking debut alongside Little Big Man and Soldier Blue. Unlike the latter two films, however, Horse is less an allegory for Vietnam-era America and more of a vision quest for historical identity. In one of his defining roles, Richard Harris plays an English aristocrat captured by Dakota Sioux in 1825. Over time, he adopts their way of life and eventually becomes tribal leader--but not before undergoing savage initiation rituals, the most famous of which involves being suspended by blades inserted beneath Harris's pectoral muscles. Horse looks clunky, quaint, and inadvertently demeaning in some respects today, but the film's Native American milieu is at least defined on its own terms, i.e., whole cloth and apart from familiar Western conventions. The real draw is Harris, whose performance has a soulful integrity. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
History of Native American Life.......2007-01-10
Being a history teacher, I needed a movie that would depict realistic Native American life for a Texas history unit. I remembered this movie
from my youth and what an impact it made on the nation. My students are not exposed to those great epic movies of yesterday. This film is an accurate accounting of everyday village life of the Sioux. It truly is a
historical classic with superb acting from Richard Harris and others. It is a must see and one for our children to view in their studies of Native Americans.
A Learning Experience.......2006-12-01
If people thought Mel Gibson had it tough getting people to watch a movie that was fully in Aramaic, think back to 1970 when A Man Called Horse came out. This movie is almost entirely spoken in Lakota, and there aren't subtitles. This helps you to really get a sense of what it was like to be thrown into a foreign culture and to try to thrive there.
Richard Harris plays John Morgan, a nobleman from England who has gotten bored with life and has been romping around the plans of the American West to find something more interesting. This is back in the 1820s, before the civil war, when there were vast expanses of quiet. Suddenly, Morgan is captured by the Sioux Indians. They treat him like a pack animal, calling him horse. It's not necessarily that the natives were "excessively cruel" to their captured slaves, in an unusual way. They looked down on them just as the southerners looked down on their slaves. They treated them as functional possessions - to be fed and watered, but certainly not paid much concern to. Morgan has to do chores, eat what is given to him, and sleep outside in the cold.
Morgan learns to do what he must to stay alive, including defending his dignity. We get an "I am not a horse!" stand, very much reminding us of "I am not an animal!" from a certain other movie. Every person wants to be respected for their humanity. The chief's sister falls for his good looks and soon the two are making goo-goo eyes at each other. But there's a catch. For Morgan to get the girl, he needs scars on his chest.
In a scene which probably goes down as one of the most memorable in all movies featuring native american cultures, claws are inserted into Morgan's chest muscles and he is suspended by them, spinning in slow circles. It is of course agonizing. But it was also a rite of passage, a way for a boy to prove he had become a man. A tribal "tattoo" if you will. The ceremony was the Sun Dance, to celebrate the strength and power of life.
I give the movie high marks for really striving to keep the situations authentic. We don't get translations of all the Lakota language, nor is the movie "dubbed" in English. Instead, you have to listen to the native language and try to learn as you go what they are saying. There are of course English sections where Morgan is talking to himself or to another captive in the group. The clothing, the homes, the ceremonial lodge are all quite fascinating to see. Many of the actors were from the Sioux reservation and knew how to do these things properly.
That being said, there is also a bit of "English dude saves backwards natives" as well. It's Morgan's skilled tactics that save the day when a battle ensues - even though this tribe has been fighting wars their entire lives, while Morgan has been off lazing in the sun. The chief's daughter could marry whoever she wanted and choose the "best of the best" - and she goes for Morgan. In very little time - and without really learning the language - Morgan goes from looked down on slave to most exulted leader.
I am also a bit embarassed that they had such trouble finding real native americans to play the lead roles. I realize if we watch a movie about the Roman Empire we tend to have Americans, not 100% Romans, playing those parts. They put Americans into all the parts in a Robin Hood movie, too. However, Native Americans *are* Americans and they were right there in the areas that the movies were being filmed. Instead, they took actors who did not look Native American at all, painted them red, and made it seem that it was good enough. I certainly understand that a good actor can submerge himself into the part, but if the movie is about a captured male African slave and his traumas coming to America, it wouldn't do well to have that played by Gwyneth Paltrow and filmed in Siberia. As good as an actress as she is, the visual mismatch would interfere with the story.
Still, in all, it is definitely a movie to watch at least one, and appreciate the parts that were done well. At one point, Morgan's fellow slave crows over a bad thing which has happened to one of the Sioux. Morgan turns and snarls at him, asking him if he has learned nothing in the five years he has been with the tribe. I certainly appreciate that sense that we can all learn from other cultures, if we would just open our ears and listen.
Great movie .......2006-08-30
This movie was great for anyone interested in Indian history. You get a feel for how they lived. If you're not sympothetic to how white men treated them before the movie, you will be afterwards.
Better than Dances With Wolves.......2006-08-07
An English nobleman, visiting circa-1820 America, is kidnapped by a band of Sioux warriors. Before you can say `Lord Greystoke" John Morgan (Richard Harris) is adapting to the strange and savage savages, and integrating himself into their strange and savage culture. That adaptation, of course, ultimately results in Lord John having a pair of splinters driven deep under his chest muscles and getting hoisted high in the air by a rope attached to those splinters. After this initiation ceremony Horse/Lord John/Harris becomes a respected warrior in the tribe. The scene, gruesomely realistic when A MAN CALLED HORSE was released in 1970, still works pretty well today.
I recommend this movie with, no pun intended, reservations. Director Elliot Silverstein does a good job of presenting the story from Harris's point of view. His initial capture and harsh treatment is appropriately exciting and unsettling. Harris is good in the physically demanding lead role, and conveys well the disorientation Lord John feels and his gradually increasing confidence in the hostile environment. And it's always nice to have a movie pay attention to details when it takes place in a foreign and exotic location - in this case a Sioux tribe in the early decades of the 19th century. The small stuff, as far as I can tell, is accurately related.
On the other hand, the `Tarzan factor' always has to be taken into account. White English nobleman travels to the colony, is kidnapped by the `natives' and, through inherent superiority, rises to a position of power and prestige in the foreign environment. At least A MAN CALLED HORSE treats the Sioux with interest and respect, and even has a few Native Americans, most notably Eddie Little Sky, among the cast. Well, Iron Eyes Cody, the `Crying Indian' some of us may remember from anti-pollution television commercials of the `70s, has a part in it too. But I've just learned, to my surprise, that Iron Eyes Cody was a second-generation, full blooded Italian from Louisiana whose real name was Espera DeCorti. Who'da thunk? Yellow Hand, the chief who claims initial ownership of Horse, is played by Manu Tupou (Fiji Islands.) Running Deer, Horse's eventual love interest, is played by Corinna Tsopei, Miss Greece 1964. Perhaps the most intriguing bit of casting is the actress who plays Yellow Hand's mother and Horse's opening day tormenter, Buffalo Cow Head - beneath the brown grease paint and buckskin robe it's no other than the redoubtable Dame Judith Anderson.
A MAN CALLED HORSE was followed, a half decade or so later, by RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE. I haven't seen the second one but enjoyed the first well enough to bury it deep in a rental queue.
Authentic and brutal rite of passage.......2006-05-15
Richard Harris stars as John Morgan a privileged but bored English nobleman hunting in the Northwest in the 1820's. He is captured and his party slain by a band of Sioux Indians. Brought back to their village he is presented to the aged mother of the chief, Buffalo Cow Head played by Dame Judith Anderson. He is degraded, dehumanized and must serve as the old lady's slave.
"A Man Called Horse" was extensively researched as to the lifestyle among the Sioux at this time and portrayed in beautifully photographed and acted out fashion. Harris gradually embraces the way of the Sioux and is schooled by another prisoner Batiste, a half Indian and half Frenchman who acts as his interpreter.
Harris falls in love with the sister of the chief, Running Deer played by the gorgeous raven haired Corinna Tsopei, a former Miss Universe from Greece. The chief, Yellow Hand played by Manu Tupou will not approve of their marriage until Harris undergoes the Sun Vow, a harsh, hurtful ceremony to prove his bravery.
Filmed in both Mexico and South Dakota with a large native American supporting cast, the movie goes on to effectively portray the tragedy that follows Harris and the Sioux tribe as they struggle for survival in the competitive environment they populated back in those days.

Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. --David Chute

Iron Monkey..........2007-02-15
I love this DVD. When this movie debuted in American Theatres, I noticed that several scenes were left out (people here probably figured that they were too violent and probably would have garnered an 'R' rating - thus shutting out many potential patrons). Get this "Chinese" version and enjoy this action flick "uncut!" Five stars...
A great movie.......2006-11-02
Watching Iron Monkey was inspiring, out classing "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon". The fights scenes were more intense, the diversity of weapons used more varied, and the central theme more focused.
Dr Yang was the iron monkey and Miss Orchid his associate. The power of Iron Monkey is the virtue of his heroic efforts. The governor hates the iron monkey. The governor has managed to steal readily from the people by creating an artificial food scarcity. The community is powerless against the Warlord and the Shaolin monks have been paid for with a price and corruptible. The governor is a political pawn to a very powerful warlord skilled in the Buddha palm poison hand technique, who will fight the iron monkey and tiger Jade, lose, and burn to death.
The iron monkey captures the governor's money and distributes the money to the poor. Dr Yang remains free from suspicion as he treats community resident's sick with the plague.
The community protects the identity of the Iron Monkey. The Iron Monkey maintains peace and order in the community.
The governor learns the Royal Minister is coming to visit and wants to capture the Iron Monkey as a prestige boaster. Jade Tiger accidently engages the Iron Monkey in an brief hand-to-hand combat. Jade Tiger and his son are arrested and brought before the governor. The governor learns about Jade Tigers fight ability and forces Jade Tiger to find Iron Monkey, in seven days, holding his Wong Fei-Hong as ransom. Jade Tiger fight characteristic include umbrella jabs, hooks, and block and rapid foot and leg kicks. After the initial confrontation between Jade Tiger and Iron Monkey, Jade Tiger learns how much the community loves Iron Monkey, as he starves for two days without food.
Miss Orchid eventually offers Master Wong Kay-Ying (Jade Tiger) food and a friendship emerges. Jade Tigers son becomes sick and Dr Yang is summoned by the chief to help Jade Tiger's son, Wong Fei-Hong (Jackie Chan great Hero), who is sick with the plague. Dr Yang nurses the boy back to health and a bond between the families is ensured.
The Iron monkey becomes the force to fight against tyranny of the warlord and his servants: the dragon witch and the swordsman. Iron monkey is poison with the Buddha palm and Jade tiger learns his identity. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger, the Hun Gar, duet combined to defeat the warlord.
The movie has humorous scenes and lines that are more typical with Jackie Chan movies. The Iron Monkey impersonates the warlord and commands the governor too distribute food from the warehouse too the people and give him all his gold and silver. The governor receives 30 lashings and the Iron Monkey escapes.
The Iron monkey defeats the Dragon Witch with "A Steel ball" that pierces her sword and penetrates her right eye. Iron Monkey uses a steel chain to twist the swordmans sword into a ribbon and then kill him. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger fight the warlord on poles suspend twenty feet above ground with heat fuel burning below on the ground.
The martial arts scenes are fantastic. Raymond Chow is probably one of the Best coordinator of fighting scenes in the World. The flying stunts are more innovative than Crouching Tiger and Hidden dragon and the hand-to-hand combat more complex combining numerous techniques of five animal style and shadow kicking by Jade Tiger. The MA form highlight was a Staff form performed by Dr Yang, classic Shaolin kicks, spins, aerial manuevers, and 3D movement. The Man seemed to fly everywhere without any strings attached. Excellent.
The movie ends with the death of the Warlord, restoration of peace, and liberation from the oppressive Governor. The Iron Monkey hero is need no more and Dr Yang can continue practicing medicene for the betterment of the community. Jade Tiger and his son earn new-found respect and admiration for each other and return home.
Robin Hood .......2006-11-01
A Doctor who helps heal people, by night he robs the rich and gives to the poor. How he fights a corrupt government official and comes to the aid of a Herbalist who has a son. His passion for a concubine turns to love and how they form a partnership in business. In the end good things happen. Watch the movie, and judge for yourself.
A good film ruined by special effects.......2006-08-09
Donnie Yen is an incredibly talented martial artist and this movie goes a long way to proving that. Unfortunately some of the action is speeded up to the point that it's quite laughable - no idea why because the guy's just unbelievable at normal speed! And there's too much wire work - people defying gravity - for me. The story's nothing special, the acting a little above the usual Hong Kong fare, but the bad guy's can really kick butt and there are some great gems in and amongst the fight scenes. Definitely one of the better HK flicks, just not one of the best.
Kung Fu action at it's finest..........2006-06-20
Reading some of the other posters, I'm not 100% surprised if some content was edited out, which I haven't seen. Beyond that, the storyline is entertaining, and the fighting styles are heavily "wire-fu" but very inventive anyway.
If you are looking for solid "wire-fu" action, this film will meet and exceed those expectations handily.

Comprehensive and scientific.......2005-10-26
This multiple DVD set was just what I was waiting for. Rather than just a pep talk and a few tricks, this DVD set is made for the serious triathlete. The DVDs really got into the nitty-gritty about how the body performs under stressful situations- and further, how to exploit what our bodies can do in order to reach higher levels of performance. I feel that I can really strive for the next plateau...two thumbs way up.
Triathlon Theory and Practise DVD.......2005-10-16
I found it to be a fairly good DVD.
Aldo I accepted to get more out of 2 DVD's
They just filmed what they teach u at one of there training camps and I expected a little bit more. The info they give u on the other hand is very good (but if your own triathlon bible Joe Friel) your not going to hear al lot of new thing

Like Oedipus at Colonus, he is sent into exile and searches to find his way back through the damage he has done.

Great action, beautiful sets and costumes, but an incredibly boring story.......2007-07-01
3 of the main Venoms are on hand for this Chang Cheh snoozefest. Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng and Phillip Kwok are brothers who are part of the Iron Flag clan. Chiang Sheng and Kwok want to put a stop to the prostitution at the Eagle Hall casino, so they get get their master to go with them for a meeting with the Eagle Hall chief. There is a subplot that has the Iron Flag clan hiring the White Robed Rambler (played by Lung Tien-chiang) to secretly go with them to the meeting in case any trouble arises. Of course trouble does occur and out of nowhere the White Robed Rambler kills the Iron Flag's master with his secret shooting spear. For some reason, he is not suspected of the murder. Now there is controversy over which of the brothers should be the new leader of the Iron Flag clan, and it eventually goes to Lu Feng. Kwok is ordered to leave because of a really stupid reason and assassins are after him. This is all Lu Feng's plan of course. He had the whole thing planned out. He hired the Rambler to kill his master so that he could be the new leader. Can you believe it?!?! I usually don't give away the entire plot in my reviews, but I will do so with this movie because it is so freaking boring. Towards the end, the Rambler finds out he was tricked into killing the Iron Flag master, and once again decides to fight on the side of good, and help kill Lu Feng. Has he changed? I don't know, you will just have to find out by watching the mildly exciting fight filled finale.
The action is quite good. Not enough of it, but still good. The story is the main issue here. There is no question that Lu Feng is a bad guy, he always plays an evil character, but the director could have at least made it seem possible that he was good. Even if it was just one scene, they could have made it seem like he was something other than the guy you know the heroes will fight at the end.
So the fights are really good, but there is nothing else to comment on. This is a 108 minute movie that easily could have been cut down to 60.
2.5/5
Celestial has remastered this to perfection, so make sure to get the IVL version, and not the full screen bootlegs.
One of the best shaw brother ever.......2006-10-27
i love this movie it's one of my favorite filled with treachery and excitment this one will surely entertain you, i think it's a classic and recommend that you definitely give it a watch, philip kwok at his best, i am a fan of shaw brothers movies and i consider them to be one of the best martial arts producers, again i will make it clear kung-fu movies are triditionally low budget so the acting, special effect and audio ,may not be the greatest, even the editing may be weak, but it's definitely a classic movie for you collection laters folks.
Flag of Iron (aka The Spearman).......2006-05-06
One of the best Shaw Brothers old school flicks I've ever seen. If you don't know anything about this flick and the Venom Mob, you are not obviously a Shaw Brothers fan or this one was just "too much before your time - old timer." In this one, you will only see three of the famous five Venoms.
This one is full of action all the way through. Full of lies, treachery, and betrayal - you can't sleep and you don't know who you could really trust.
The plot picks up with the usual theme - two rival schools not liking eachother. The Eagles invites The Iron Flag to their school for a meal as a gesture of good faith and for settling their differences. The real motive was to get them on their ground and wipe them out in an ambush. The Iron Flag not trusting this "so called kind gesture" hires a hitman - The Spearman, to step in at the first sign of danger. Although The Iron Flag were victorious, their master was set up to be killed by the eldest member of their own school (played by Lu Feng) who had also hired The Spearman. During the heated portion of the fight, their teacher was killed. Unknowingly to The Spearman, the teacher was a good man. The Spearman later realized that after killing the teacher of The Iron Flag, he had been set up by the same person that hired him.
After the death of their teacher, Lu Feng becomes the head. He convinces Kuo Chui (the most versatile and gifted of the Venoms) to go into exile in order to take the heat off of the school and return later when things have smoothed over. He promised to send him money and look after his needs while in exile. Kuo never received any money from Lu Feng. Instead, he was constantly on guard because someone had hired ten killers to wipe him out. Kuo outclassed and outmatched all of them.
Kuo later learned that the name of his school had changed and that it was Lu Feng who hired the ten killers. He also learned that Lu Feng had joined forces with the rival school and began to run brothels and gambling rings. When Kuo returned, he did not receive a warm welcome. Lu Feng was still plotting behind the scenes to get rid of him and using his own followers as scapegoats to do it.
Flag-draped spears were the overall weapons of choice in this one. Usually the battle with spears can be a bit boring, but not in this one. The Venoms are the best at fighting with spears that you can get.
I would have given this flick five stars, but some of the scenes were cut out. I have this one on VHS and it's much longer. Why did they cut it? I don't have a clue. My version is quite clear - a pretty decent transfer at best. Even though some of the scenes were cut out, you will not go wrong watching this. Be careful to watch the millions of bootleg copies floating around out there.
Check out the VHS version --- it's LONGER than the DVD!.......2004-12-07
This version is all right on DVD but some parts are missing. The ten deadly killers after Kuo Chui had just killed the Axe Man with Chiang Sheng was longer because the axe was left behind and Chiang Sheng was wondering who does that belong to? Kuo Chui points down int the well where he placed the body and they continue on about the appearance of the 10 deadly killers along with the saying "The axeman and the spearman, the butcher boy, the fortune teller, the bookkeeper, the young kid, the old man with the three youths," All of that is missing from the dvd version. If you want to check out the VHS version --- go to http://www.kungfuflix.com to get it and check it out. Other than that --- one of the reviewers was right Chiang Sheng didn't do much fighting in this film, only in the beginning and near the end. Hope this helps whoever is a true fan of the Shaw brothers films
Another Chang Cheh classic.......2002-03-23
This movie makes fighting with large flags look really good. Probably the only movie to do so. The usual Chang Cheh fighting force is here and in top form. This movie is on the same level as "Kid With The Golden Arm", "Five Deadly Venoms", and "Masked Avengers". If liked those, you'll like this one. The DVD quality is pretty good and the sound equal and audible unlike the "Executioner From Shaolin" DVD. Funniest death scene: an iron flag flying through a bad guy and he still takes a few seconds to die.

Customer Reviews:
A bit misleading, but tons of hot babes in w/ few clothes. Pretty hot for what it is........2007-01-29
How much you like this title will depend greatly on what you're expecting. If you want really erotic, Hot Body International type fare with nude models and scores of open-leg shots, then you'll be really disappointed with this one.
It is basically topless only (and some of these babes even had the nerve to keep their tops ON), and more akin to Playboy at its tamest. You'll be wanting more, more, more from every babe in this one, and will make liberal use of the fast forward.
However, if you can get into gorgeous babes in pretty good to really good shape w/ gym bodies, this will "keep the ying up" so to speak. Highlights here are Linda O'Neil (seen her in their other titles - she is a busty, natural-looking girl-next-door stunner), double D blonde bombshell Deanna, wrestling hard-body Devon Michaels and very busty Asian hottie LeAnna. Mason gets extra credit for giving us a bit of (non-explicit) full-frontal nudity.
For guys really into muscle-babes, Devon and April Hunter provide the real body-builder muscle, while Laurie and Kelly showcase stellar gym bodies (though both keep the tops on).
Yes, they are not nude, but the breasts on some of these babes (4 stars for Deanna, LeAnna & Linda) will have your jaw on the floor - full, naturalistic and eye-popping. At 55 mins, with some FF this is a really quick but pleasant view at a low $.
