I have yet to get this movie on DVD, but I have it on VHS. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I actually know most if not all the lines in the movie.

Bruce Bugtrotter was one of my favorite characters in the film. I love the cake scene in the audutoriam(sp). I love when he told trunchbull that his moms cake was better. "How can you be sure, unless you have another bite." Lol it's a laughable feelgood fun movie.
This is a movie for all ages.
Danny Devito and his wife Rhea Pearlman are really funny this movie. they work well together.

An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh--and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics, so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il, who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight, so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches Left, Right, and in-between, the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical Rent. It's offensive, irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. Painfully funny sniggering little boys.--Steve Wiecking

Description

In TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE, a group of marionette puppets form Team America, an international police force dedicated to maintaining global stability. Discovering that a power hungry dictator, Kim Jong II, plans to destroy the world and is brokering weapons of mass destruction to terrorists, the team enlists the undercover help of Broadway star Gary Johnston and embarks on a harrowing mission to save the world. Opposed to this, is the Film Actors' Guild, or F.A.G., whose members include puppets representing actors Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. In spite of the lack of support they receive, the team sticks to their plan of saving the world and putting an end to terrorism.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed so hard I was exhausted...THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!!!.......2007-06-29

Offensive and funny in the way that puppets expressing emotions, engaging in violence, having sex without sanction of sacraments and Church, and hurling obscenities can only be. I could not stop laughing the entire time.

I'm somewhere to the right of Vlad the Impaler, so the old right-bashing left-bashing arguments so beloved of South Park Republicans (mostly libertarians) don't carry much truck with me. Rightist hypocrisy and false braggadocio are on full display here, along with over-the-top chuckle-headed nationalism an inch deep and an ocean wide filled with the tears of sentiment and absent boarders of reason. On the flip side, self-righteous Hollywood poltroons are given their full display, and no gasbag disappoints. What is more remarkable is how little the caricature of the puppets differs from the actual spew of their objects. Perhaps that is funniest of all.

This film makes full use of the liberty of comedy, employing and invoking the ancient rights of jesters everywhere to have no sacred cows. If you think of the film seriously, there is absolutely no way you can not be offended. If you enter into the Rabelaisian world of suspension of disbelief and watch the puppets become the morality play within the interior of the melodrama becomes evident. The admonition "That which stimulates our senses but at the same time does not elevate our morals is pernicious" is defeated by the exquisite combination of Rabelais, Satire, Machiavelli, and explosive plasticine. We are better for the distractions of the jesters: let them play on.

5 out of 5 stars Team America: World Police.......2007-05-22

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, however, it's not suitable for children. The sex scene is outrageous! I found North Korea's Kim Jong-il's dialog to be insanely funny! If you have a funny bone, you will like this puppet movie. Definitely a cult movie with hopefully more episodes to follow. Highly Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Not near as funny as South Park.......2007-05-15

And the politics suddenly go righter-than-right (but still well to the left of Attila the Hun). I thought I'd like it a lot more than I did. There are some funny moments throughout, the sex scene, the puking scene, the Team America Theme Song scene. The plot is not exactly suspenseful, if you say it's a comedy and doesn't need a plot, the comedy is pretty sparse. For the whole film, you're waiting for something really funny to happen, but it never does. Some people complain about 'perceived political content' well hello, it is a comedy about politics, much more so than say, Austin Powers or even Maxwell Smart (remember him?) That would be fine, regardless of what tack it took, if it was a really funny film, but to me it was a wasted opportunity. I'd like to laugh at this film. But I can only laugh NEAR it, it seems.

5 out of 5 stars Team America World Police .......2007-05-03

Team America is a good movie. It helps prople believe that there are heros, and vilians in the world ,but mostly heros hopfully.I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars This film will be remembered when many others are forgotten.......2007-04-16

Okay. There are over 500 reviews on this and I hardly intend to make much of an impact. So let's keep things simple.

1. Juvenile, gross-out humor. Yes. Utterly and shamelessly. If you have no tolerance for watching a marionette puppet puke gallons of yellowish bile on the screen, then avoid this film. I tried my hardest to hit the fast-forward button on my remote, but I was laughing so hard I couldn't see.

2. Politically incorrect. Yes, in droves. Got a sacred cow? Prepare to watch it turned into a Big Mac before your very eyes. Personally, I found it very refreshing.

3. Inappropriate for children. Some might say inappropriate for adults.

There. That's out of the way. So why did they make it? If any of you recall, Jim Henson, when asked how he became such a success with puppets, replied that he and Frank Oz realized that some of the world's worst, stupid humor was actually very funny if it was delivered by a puppet. Puppets brilliantly facilitate the chasm needed to create a comic character; you have to care about the character, but you can't care too much or a comic character becomes a tragic character. So...

...what do you think happens when most people watch a highly acrobatic pair of naked people performing sex acts? It's pretty painful to watch. Now what happens when you watch TWO PUPPETS having acrobatic sex? It's a RIOT! See, puppets aren't supposed to have sex. They're supposed to say cute things and entertain little kids, not boink like porn stars.

Bottom line: either you "get" the humor or you don't. I can easily see how many people would be disappointed by the film, but it was very groundbreaking in its own way. To not find it funny is not terribly surprising, but to dislike it on the grounds, as many 1-star reviews claim, that it is a right-wing propaganda film has got to be far more preposterous than any absurdity that has made Parker and Stone two of the youngest and most successful comic talents in the past 40 years.

Steven Seagal can consider himself lucky if he ever makes a better movie than this one, which was appropriately dubbed "Die Hard on a battleship" when released in 1992. Seagal handles the heroic duties with his usual wooden efficiency, but the movie's greatest assets are a punchy script and the scene-stealing performances of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. The two play leaders of a terrorist group who take over the venerable battleship USS Missouri during its final commissioned voyage. They're crazed psychotics who seize control of the ship's nuclear arsenal, but they don't know that Seagal--as the ship's cook, no less--is a former Navy hero, lurking in the shadows and waiting to spoil their nefarious scheme. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) helms the action with skillful style, and as the cheesecake stripper who proves handy with a hand grenade, Playboy Playmate-turned-actress Erika Eleniak gives Seagal another reason to strut his macho stuff. Under Siege is hormonal hokum for gun-happy viewers, but as action movies go, this one's a definite guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

excellent action movie and the hero Steven Seagal is as always outstanding Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

5 out of 5 stars A Tinge of DIE HARD but Definitely Seagal.......2007-02-07

UNDER SIEGE certainly could be a DIE HARD film if you change the lead character but this film works just fine is one of Seagal's best. Steven Seagal's stoic performance works to his advantage against the over-the-top performances of villains Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Seagal uses everything but the kitchen sink to save the day aboard the Battleship Missouri. This is a good one.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Seagal's best movie so far.......2007-02-07

Steven Seagal is finally coming to Scotland, Edinburgh specifically, to play with his band Thunderbox. Although he has a few more chins than he used to, my boyfriend is thinking of going to see him in concert, so what better way to celebrate the fact a major star is coming to Edinburgh, than to watch a movie?

I'm normally not that fussed about Mr Seagal. I own one of his movies (Marked For Death), but I've discovered, since watching this, that I have so much more respect for him when he doesn't have that ponytail. Which just looks silly on a guy that big anyway. I knew I was going to be watching this, as it was "reserved" for watching on the brand new, HD DVD player that now resides in my boyfriend's sitting room. It was my first viewing of a HD DVD and overall, I was very impressed.

Shock horror, you do actually get to see Steven SMILE in this film, which made me start to like him even more. Normally, he's all serious. It did look like he was going to start dancing at one point, which would have left me cringing, but thankfully, he didn't. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones join him in this movie, including some female nudity from Erika Eleniak, who proves she can handle a gun that looks bigger than her. This is a very stereotypical action movie of the nineties, where terrorists take over whatever it is. In this case, it's a very big naval battleship. Tommy Lee Jones looks like he came straight from the sixties to this point in time. There's not much to the story, but Seagal saves the day, leading everybody along in the process to believe that he's nothing but a lowly cook.

The HD is very impressive, looks great on a 50 inch big screen (some guys have cars - my boyfriend has all his TV stuff and DVDs), the picture has been remastered, and is brighter and sharper than you can possibly imagine. There's no extras on this unfortunately, just a trailer, but some other HDs boast of in movie experiences etc. Shame they couldn't have brought back Steven for a "look back on..." or a commentary, I'm sure it would have been worthwhile.

Definitely the best Seagal movie in my eyes. Get it, watch it!

4 out of 5 stars Under Siege.......2007-01-31

This moive is packed with great actions. It is the one of the best Steven Seagal movie. The storyline may be a bit silly but it is great entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Best Seagal's movie.......2007-01-28

Seagal plays Casey Ryback - a cook (yup, that's right, a cook) who, by the way, is also a trained Navy SEAL trained in unarmed combat, explosives, weapons usage, tactical weapons etc etc etc. Due to some incident in his past he's working as a cook on board a US warship.

Then the bad guys arrive and hijack the ship. A curious plot, but there you go. Naturally they take out all officers ranking higher than the traitor who lets them in but conveniently don't know that Ryback has skills beyond pie-making.

So begins the carnage, as this now somewhat annoyed Navy SEAL decides to take back the ship. With a little help from Miss July 1989 and a few crew members he finds locked in a room somewhere he not only kills the entire army of bad guys but also manages to take out the Korean submarine that wanted to buy the nuclear missiles on board the ship.

If you like a bit of all-action quasi-comedy with disbelief then just go and buy this movie.

This lean, efficient horror flick stands well above most bloated blockbusters. Dog Soldiers follows a military squad on a training mission in the Scottish wilds, where they run into a pack of werewolves. There's nothing fancy about the plot--the soldiers hole up in a farmhouse and desperately try to fend off the werewolves until dawn--but the script is full of smart dialogue and clever ideas, the direction is dynamic, and the performances (from Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Emma Cleasby, and Liam Cunningham, among a solid cast of relative unknowns) are strong and committed throughout. Dog Soldiers pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, Aliens, and The Evil Dead, among other films, but the references are woven into the fabric of the movie. An unpretentious, tension-inducing flick like this is a pleasant reminder that even crude special effects can be more evocative than expensive computer flashiness. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars ecxellent unknown military horror.......2007-06-18

great independent lower budget gem. This is the same guy who made The Descent, if you are a horror fan than this is worth checking out, a diffent spin on the old werewolf fims.

5 out of 5 stars great movei.......2007-05-12

I think this is one of the better werewolf movies around. The special effects aren't great but over all it isnt your regular run of the mill werewolf movie. If you like off the beaten path movies then you will like this one.

4 out of 5 stars "Dog Soldiers".......2007-04-07

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. It is a little choppy and hard to understand what is going on at first, but it is well worth the watch. Especially if you are a werewolf movie fan.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-04-07

It's always fun to watch those jokers across the pond trying to be scary. It's a class B horror movie; Bad writing, predictable plot, cheesy acting, and high school drama club effects.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Army vs. the Monsters.......2007-04-05

Effective well-done action horror film. A squad of British soldiers on a routine exercise in the remote hills of Scotland find themselves stalked by a group of werewolves. Holing up in a remote farmhouse with a helpful and attractive zoologist, they make a last stand as the monsters lay siege. With fine performances and richly colored camerawork, there is a lot here for the afficianado looking for something to watch before the next great horror film comes along. There are knowing nods to a range of films from Night of the Living Dead to Zulu. The soldiers are a real team and the major source of conflict comes with a mysterious 'special ops' officer they are forced to carry with them who clearly knows more than he is saying. There is a lot of blood and some internal organs on display but nothing too beyond the pall except perhaps for one scene involving an overly playful (or hungry) dog. The film has a quiet sense of humor as well as a feel for suspense. There will be nothing too surprising here for anyone who has watched a lot of horror films but it is all very well done and fun to watch. The film was released directly to DVD in this country. The DVD is not overloaded with extras but has enough. Highly recommended.

Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Underneath the city streets, amid the labyrinth of subway tunnels and gothic ruins, the two most notorious creatures of the night are embroiled in an all-out war that has been going on for centuries. It is the culmination of a blood-thirsty battle between the vampires and their mortal enemies, the werewolves. Stars: Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, My Life Without Me), Scott Speedman (My Life Without Me, TV's "Felicity").

5 out of 5 stars Should become a classic!.......2007-06-13

I've always been a sucker for vampire movies, and no matter whether the story is a deep, thought provoking one; or a good solid action packer like this is, I'll see it. When I first saw trailers for this film I knew I was going to be there on opening night!

This movie (in my opinion) will become a classic. Whether it becomes a mainstream classic or just a solid cult-classic remains to be seen. The story is very well written and as someone pointed out, it revolves around WHY there is a war between vampires and werewolves and less on the creatures themselves.

The acting is just about as superb as it can get. In my opinion not led by Beckinsale, but rather by Bill Nye who plays a very convincing Viktor. Slight over-acting in spots by Speedman, but overall he plays very well off of the rest of the cast.

The directing is just as superb. It is over the top with the effects but only in the spots where it is needed. Enhancing the story, excitement, and tension all inter-twining the characters and their respective stories as to how the war began and where it will go. The ending leaves the option for a sequel (which we now see is the case) and it keeps the viewer hooked for the next chapter!

Highly recommened and will be a classic over the course of time.

5 out of 5 stars A girl can't save no situation without a boy.......2007-06-07

Apart from the comic trip look and feel of this film, apart from the special effects both on the side of the vampires and on the side of the werewolves, apart from the impossible love affair between a vampire girl and a werewolf boy, at the beginning qt least, soon to become something else, this film is decadent in all possible ways and somewhere kind of paranoid. And yet there is something that floats over the whole thing, that survives the animal horror that animates these pictures and bleak places. Two species have been fighting for centuries and the salvation of both is in a new blood line that will cross the two different ones. Peace can only come from crossing the bloodlines of the two rivals, the two enemies, the two antagons. And that works, in the film of course, because in reality if it were that simple...! It has been noticed that when a civil war starts we never know when it will stop. It took some thirty years for the latest episode of the Irish civil war to come to maybe an end and that was only the last episode of a war that was started by the invasion and conquest of Ireland by the English three or four centuries ago. And I will not speak of the Bosnian or Kosovar conflicts, nor of the opposition between Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq and in the world. But that's the optimistic final scene of a film that targets teenagers when war comes to an end because the two bloodlines have been mixed in the veins of a new leader. Yet I found the film a little bit long and repetitive as for the fighting scenes.

3 out of 5 stars After about twenty minutes, It begins to warm up and become enjoyable.......2007-04-14

The beginning can be pathetic. It's unclear how many movies I recognized while 'observing' and loosely watching. Matrix rings a bell. I mean that in a derogatory way. I'll stop there. I do belong, on occassion, to cultous fangorious, goth groups.....when the moon is full and friday collides mysteriously with the 13th...which was drunkily yesterday. Did I mention how I stayed up all night with friends and watched this film for the first time? We borrowed it from the library for free. Awesomeness, free. What lulled me from my drunken sleepiness, was the occassional moody fits of Victor, who seemed the savior of this film. I loved when he cracked that scientist' skull because......well he was mad. And he didn't want that guy to squeeze out another wise'allicky comment. I mean, I've never seen some dude just wind up and smack someone with one death blow and successfully kill a person like that. He's the man. So I liked it for that, and I liked that it was sorta short and way gothy. There you go.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film.......2007-03-17

Together with Underworld: Evolution, two great films. Action-packed, fast paced, great photograhpy and special effects; good plot too. A must see for action/vampire film lovers. This the first film to see. Then see Underworld: Evolution, to keep the story straight. Buy it!

The Rock is definitely Walking Tall in this straightforward remake of the popular 1973 revenge flick based on the real-life exploits of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Only the basic premise of the original film remains, but it's well-suited to the Rock's rising-star agenda, and it's a savvy, albeit uninspired follow-up to his previous hit, The Rundown. With typical beefcake bravado, Chris Vaughan (the Rock) arrives home in rural Kitsap County, Washington (filmed in budget-friendly Canada, of course) to find his hometown overtaken by childhood friend-turned-sleazebag casino owner and drug-dealer Jay Hamilton (played with steely-eyed malevolence by Neal McDonough), whose squad of goons includes the local sheriff. The cards are instantly and simplistically stacked against our hero, but no matter: he's soon kickin' ass and takin' names as the new sheriff, and from that point director Kevin Bray (All About the Benjamins) goes strictly by-the-numbers, limiting this punchy programmer to a brisk 85 minutes, with comic relief (courtesy of costar Johnny Knoxville) and an obligatory love-interest (Ashley Scott, in obligatory skimpy attire) tossed in for good measure. It's a cracker movie for a cracker audience, and on those terms it handily expedites the Rock's ascension to the action-movie throne. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars REALLY BAD REMAKE !.......2007-03-26

What ever good qualities were in the original did not make it into this remake! Really bad!

5 out of 5 stars Tough.......2007-03-11

Loved it! Loved it! Dwayne Johnson is gorgeous and the role he played in this movie fit him like a pair of comfortable slippers because he just slipped right into it. Oooh! the way he used that piece of wood was so exciting and the strength he showed in recovering from the beating. I know I jumped a couple of feet in the air when the jury found him not guilty. Johnny Knoxville's role was so natural and Neal McDonough was also great. Great movie that I will be watching over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars ...And Carry a Big Stick.......2007-01-23

Walking Tall is a remake of the 1973 film, which is in turn a "semi-biopic" of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Ironically enough, Pusser was a former professional wrestler-turned lawman in McNairy County, Tennessee. For those of you keeping track, the Buford Pusser was renamed to Chris Vaughn (in the world of macho movies, this is understandable) and his background was changed from wrestling to Special Forces. Which is funny, because Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who plays the role of Vaughn, is a former professional wrestler turned actor.

In this action movie, Vaughn returns to his hometown of Kitsap County, Washington (instead of Pusser's actual McNairy County, Tennessee) from a stint in the Special Forces. We're not sure what Vaughn did, but it must have been ugly, because he never speaks about it and answers questions about people he killed with a sad stare. Unfortunately, Kitsap County has gone downhill since the local lumber mill closed. His father, Vaughn Sr. (John Beasley) is out of work. Vaughn's sister Michelle (Kristen Wilson) has become a cop, but her son Pete (Khleo Thomas) hangs out with the wrong crowd. Heck, even Vaughn's old girlfriend Deni (Ashley Scott) has become a stripper. All these sins can be blamed on Vaughn's old high school rival, Jay Hamilton (played with sneering arrogance by Neal McDonough).

Vaughn's return is cause for celebration by his friends, including the recovering alcoholic Ray (Johnny Knoxville, of all people), who treat him to a night of gambling and debauchery at Hamilton's premiere casino. But the whole place is dirty, where gamblers cheat and drugs are given to kids. It's at this point that Walking Tall flirts with cartoonish levels of evil. Even Hamilton points this out: "Why would I sell drugs when I own the entire town already?" Why indeed?

Vaughn goes nuts once he discovers that the place is corrupt, and his fisticuffs earn him a form of vicious revenge from the security staff that involves a box cutter and a lot of cutaway scenes of Vaughn screaming. Left to die, he manages to recover on his parents' sofa. The sheriff (Michael Bowen) and his deputies are obviously in Hamilton's pocket and refuse to help. When Vaughn's nephew overdoses on drugs gained from Hamilton's casino, Vaughn's had enough: he takes a four-foot hickory club and smashes the place up. That's just the first half of the movie.

Returning to reality, Vaughn's outburst causes him to be brought up on several charges, brought by the very people who cut him up the first time. Vaughn wins the case by appealing to squeamishness of the jury, who wince once he shows them the scars from the box cutter. "If you acquit me of these charges, I'll run for sheriff!" he shouts. And they do. And he does. What happens next is a good old-fashioned butt-whupping from a big man with a big stick.

I didn't expect much from an action movie headlined by a wrestler, but Walking Tall distinguishes itself in several ways that make it worth watching:

IT'S MULTIETHNIC: Vaughn's father is black, his mother is white; Vaughn's girlfriend is white. The movie doesn't make a big deal about it.

IT KNOWS ITS LIMITATIONS: The Rock is huge. This obvious fact is used against Vaughn when he's on trial, as the poor, beat-up thugs make him out to be a monster. And he sort of is...he's just a monster you want on your side. Ray is both pathetic and amusing, but mostly pathetic, as only Knoxville can play him.

IT UNABASHEDLY LOVES ACTION: This movie is about good guys beating up bad guys. Although Vaughn's Special Forces training is curiously absent from most of the film, he does get into fistfights and gunfights with everybody. The fighting is fast and furious but never overtly cinematic. There are lots of thuds, grunts, and crunches.

I like The Rock. He's handsome and sleek in a way that other muscle-bound stars are not, conveying both strength and speed. He doesn't come off as a brutal thug by just looking at him, unless he's standing next to someone else. And because Johnson is famous for arching his eyebrow in ironic "am I for real or what?" pose, he's able to pull off comedy by standing next to someone considerably smaller, like Knoxville.

Walking Tall has both heart and muscle, a feel-good tale about a tough guy who stands up for his hometown in an era when nobody seems to be standing up for anything anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Good action, solid storyline of with a dash of humor........2007-01-18

Knoxville and The Rock are a good pair of longtime friends in a small rural Washington town overun by corruption. The rock is a decorated sergent home from the army, Knoxville a streetwise highschool friend that lived on the other side of the law. Together, they try to set things strait in a town that is not what the sergent left behind. This storyline is based of a series of films (a trilogy)in the 1970's and a tv series about Buford Pusser, a sherrif in Tennessee, and on real life Buford Pusser. Check this film out, a reasonably done film good for a thrill or two. Rumor has it, there is a sequal coming out, Walking Tall-The Payback with Kevin Sorbo. Please see this one before you see that, because it will likely ruin your impression of the storyline

4 out of 5 stars Love This Movie!.......2007-01-16

I really enjoyed the non-stop action and adventure in this movie. A good Saturday night movie to watch at home and chill out. I think The Rock is so nice-looking. Nice modern version of the earlier picture.

Move over, Vin Diesel, because The Transporter, Hong Kong action veteran Corey Yuen's English-language directorial debut, is revving up to steal your thunder. As the other top-billed action star to emerge in 2002, British hunk Jason Statham--previously seen in Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, and The One--plays a hard-driving courier for well-heeled underworld clients. He follows simple rules: (1) Stick to the deal; (2) Don't ask names; and (3) Don't look in the packages he transports. All's well until he violates rule 3, discovering a Chinese beauty (Qi Shu) in the trunk of his tricked-out BMW, and foiling a deadly plot to smuggle Chinese slaves through the port of Marseilles. The first hour is ass-kickin' fun, and the stuntwork is impressive throughout, even as the plot degenerates into a predictable series of bone-breaking showdowns. Statham boasts an appealing combination of brains and brawn, suggesting the suave versatility of a promising career. Coproduced by action auteur Luc Besson and filmed on dazzling French locations, The Transporter is an action fan's delight. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars don't break the rules.......2007-06-20

The Transporter is Jason Statham's first big solo role in a movie, and it is a success with the followups of Transporter 2, Crank, and the anticipated upcoming film "War", where he fights one on one against Jet Li. Jason has participated in several films before Transporter in somewhat lesser roles such as "The One" and "The Italian Job", but the Transporter finally lets this man shine - and he brings a character to the screen - Frank Martin - who is intelligent, skillful, strong and one downright cool guy.

The movie has a good and promising beginning, showing off the cool factor of Frank Martin immediately. Followed quickly by an intense car chase scene, the movie never lets up after that - whether it be action or suspense. The story is not too interesting, but it is put together well. Frank discovers that a package he is transporting is carrying a live body inside. Frank's "tough-guy attitude" is worn down and he breaks his own rule by opening the package. The receiver of the package is no dummy, and realizes that Frank broke the rules and has his car destroyed. Frank, fortunately absent from his car during the explosion, seeks revenge but ends up with company along the way by accident - the girl inside the package. From here the story begins to take off as Frank becomes entangled in the situation all the more.

While there isn't a tremendouns amount of action, the spacing of action works well enough. The final 20 minutes are huge, easily containing the best scenes in the movie. I especially liked the fights in the bus garage and the final highway truck scene which reminded me very much of the truck scene from "Raider of the Lost Ark".

Transporter is a great movie for Jason Statham. I really enjoy this guy, and see a good future for him. His martial art skills are truly entertaining, as is his stunts and acting. This is an hour and half of just great relax entertainment.

I loved this movie! The story was new and creative! If you like action movies and actor Jason Statham, you'll love this movie. Filmed in the French Riviera!

Video-Blu-ray: This movie enjoys a good transfer-not perfect- but good! You still see some video noise and image grain. Overall, Just slightly better than the SD in term of details with extra grain.

Audio: simply impressive!

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with this one! Action, suspense, romance and fast car chases. If the image grain bothers you, try the SD version-it's not as grainy.

2 out of 5 stars The Transporter.......2007-05-09

Totally wonderful film. Tons of action , but none of is unbelievable (this is NOT Spiderman, thank God). I am personally very attached to the location, in and around Nice, which I visit often. Statham is very cool and low key; Shu Qi is totally delicious. Her English is to die for. The French Commissaire is just wonderful. The driving action (this from a pretty crazy driver) is very satisfying. Luc Besson for ever!! As good as the best of James Bond...

1 out of 5 stars Could be the dumbest movie ever..........2007-04-17

This could be the dumbest movie ever made (and that's a bold statement to make when one considers that "Underworld" also exists). Sadly, unlike "Underworld" there is no leather clad Kate Beckinsale to drool over. Instead, we are treated to a movie that could easily be confused for a map of the human DNA (but a human with an extra chromosome).

Jason Statham, so likable in "Snatch", "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "The Italian Job" is thoroughly wasted in this flick. When he's not busy escaping from his tricked out house, driving fast whilst looking cool and beating up on clichéd Euro trash delivers lines such as "Rule #1. Never change the deal" and is expected to act with a straight face when he's the recipient of this type of drivel - "You're always complaining, except when we make love. Then you say nothing.". Thankfully, the one thing Stetham is great at is keeping a straight face. But you won't. Not if you have a brain, that is.

5 out of 5 stars All action with a story included.......2007-04-17

I went into watching this movie with no knowledge of what it was about. I ended up in the end of it loving it. This movie is an "all action" flick with a story included. Actually it isn't just one story, it is a couple of them. The stunts in this movie and the special effects is outstanding. If you like action flicks, you will love this one. I recommend this movie to anyone that loves action flicks and is a Jason Stantham fan as well. BTW, he does have his shirt off in a couple of scenes in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good...........2007-01-05

To me, the best part of this movie is showing clips of modern SF in action and when it cuts to the team they are following around. Unfortunatly, 75% of this movie is about SF history, which I already know enough about. However, if you WANT to know about SF history, and how SF interacts with te current worl, then I recommend this to you. As far as production goes, its very well made, and not by any means "corny". Money well spent.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2006-08-01

The video itself wasn't bad, just wasn't what I expected. Very limited on the history, training, clandestine operations, ect. Mostly followed a Special Forces unit while they did very little. I saw a Discovery Channel show titled "Inside Navy SeALs", and I think I was expecting that quality. As stated before: Not bad, but not what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Great look at US Army special operators!.......2005-12-29

This is an up-to-date and extremely accurate look at today's US Special Forces (USSF). Rather than the typical Rambo-style portrayal of Green Berets, National Geographic has done their usual outstanding job of getting the truth in words and pictures. This is the real deal.
I am a retired US Army Special Forces officer.

5 out of 5 stars excellent example of unconventional warfare .......2005-07-31

This DVD is an excellent example of unconventional warfare in action. It places U.S. Army Special Forces with their indigenous element in Afghanistan and shows extremely damning evidence of the Iraqi Government's complicity in the State sponsorship of International Terrorism under Saddam Hussein. I only wish this information had been picked up by traditional media and elaborated on more.

Previous reviews criticize the military garb, stance, and bearing of the soldiers being portrayed in the documentary. This individual is clearly unaccustomed to the unconventional warfare environment and his criticism was incredibly irrelevant. I highly recommend this video to anyone that would like a peak into the world of unconventional warfare and how the competencies of U.S. Special Forces differ from those of U.S. Navy Seals.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it , good overview........2004-07-17

Its exactly what it says. Its inspiring ,focused and honest. Good if your a military buff. I keep watching it.

Amazon.com essential video

Peter Lorre made film history with his startling performance as a psychotic murderer of children. Too elusive for the Berlin police, the killer is sought and marked by underworld criminals who are feeling the official fallout for his crimes. This riveting, 1931 German drama by Fritz Lang--an early talkie--unfolds against a breathtakingly expressionistic backdrop of shadows and clutter, an atmosphere of predestination that seems to be closing in on Lorre's terrified villain. M is an important piece of cinema's past along with a number of Lang's early German works, including Metropolis and Spies. (Lang eventually brought his influence directly to the American cinema in such films as Fury, They Clash by Night, and The Big Heat.) M shouldn't be missed. This original 111-minute version is a little different from what most people have seen in theaters. --Tom Keogh

Description

On moratorium since the end of March, Fritz Lang's serial killer thriller starring Peter Lorre returns to DVD in a fully restored, special edition double-disc set. A simple, haunting musical phrase whistled off-screen tells us that a young girl will be killed. "Who is the murderer?" pleads a nearby placard as serial killer Hans Beckert (Lorre) closes in on little Elsie Beckmann... In his harrowing masterwork, Lang merged trenchant social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller. The Criterion Collection is proud to present a new restoration of this landmark film in an all-new two-disc set, also including audio commentary by two German film scholars; an interview film Conversation with Fritz Lang, directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection); a short film inspired by M by director Claude Chabrol (La Ceremonie, Les Biches); classroom tapes of M's editor discussing the film and its history; and much more.

4 out of 5 stars 5-star film, 4-star DVD.......2007-05-16

M is an essential film. But this DVD was a little disappointing, I felt. The picture and sound were better than other versions I've seen, but still not as pristine as I would have liked. Special features were so-so. Price was as high as Criterion usually likes it. All in all, I've seen better adaptations of similarly legendary films to DVD.

But if you are at all interested in the great films of the past, this is a must-have, and Criterion MUST be kept in business at all costs (wince). So this is a good buy overall.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-05-12

"M" is one the rare films where viewing it is compulsory. Director Fritz Lang has you in his grip from first frame to last. This is essentially two films. A child murderer is on the loose in Weimar Germany. Panic and paranoia is rampant among the populace. The police are using state-of-the-art(for the time) techniques to track the killer. The underworld is in a lather. Their efforts to nab the killer are not so much altruistic. Rather he's bad for business. The killer's identity is no secret. As the public speculates as to who the murderer could be Lang reveals pudgy, fey Hans Beckert(Peter Lorre). The second half of the film is a treatise on vigilanteism. It is here that Lang demonstrates his belief in civil justice even in the face of the worst atrocity. Beckert, pleaing for his life, manages to rend your heart while admitting to his monstrosity. There are many powerful images on display here none the least the statement that closes the film by the mother of one of Beckert's victims. This film would be a good pairing with another Lang film that concerns itself with mob rule, "Fury".

5 out of 5 stars A modern film, made in the 1930's........2007-01-22

"Who knows what it's like to be me?''
An anguished cry from a tortured man, one that can't help elicit sympathy, despite the fact that the man in question in a serial killer.

"M" is a revolutionary, incredible movie in many ways. It began the career of Peter Lorre. It was the last gasp of German Expressionism before the Nazi takeover. It is, in many ways, Frtiz Lang's best film. It's haunting, moving and memorable like few other movies ever are.

Many people today forget what a major impact German cinema had on the development of movies. Starting with "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari" in 1920, and moving up through movies by greats like F W Murnau ("Nosferatu", "Faust", "Sunrise") and Fritz Lang ("Metropolis"), Germany manged to put forth some of the best, most amazing images ever projected up onto a screen. Who can forget the arrival of the plague ship in "Nosferatu", or Rotwang's robot in "Metropolis"? These images are iconic in our society, a fact made all the more interesting when you consider that not long after "M" another German would make the Swastika a very memorable and iconic image.

"M" tells the story of a serial killer who preys on children. We see him meeting a young girl as she goes home from school. We see him buying her a balloon. We see her mother wondering why she isn't home and calling out her name as the camera focuses on the pathetic place setting for a lunch the girl will never eat. We see her ball rolling away into the dirt near some bushes. We see her balloon rise up into the telephone wires.

As the populace gets more and more concerned about these killings, the Berlin police get more and more frustrated, as does the criminal element. Sales of their various wares are down. Business is hurting. They resent being lumped in together with this child murder and even consider taking out an add in the papers to say that he isn't one of them.

Eventually the criminals decide to act and begin to hunt for the killer themselves. What happens after they catch him is something that needs to be seen to be believed, as a kangaroo court of crimal masterminds puts the killer on trial, saying that many of them are quite well informed of the way the legal system works.

"M" can be viewed as the start of two major genres; film noir and police procedural. Much like in "Silence of the Lambs" and "The Fugitive", you see the slow, steady process the police use as they try to track down a killer before he strikes again. And the film's status as the earliest form of noir is obvious to anyone who has ever seen any movie in that particular genre.

"M" is at times a hard movie to watch. You will find yourself feeling sympathy for Peter Lorre's character, vile though he is. His performance occupies maybe 20 minutes of screen time, but was so memorable that it resulted in him being typecast for the rest of his career. Given how good he was in those roles, maybe we should be thankful for that.

"M" was released on DVD as part of the Criterion Collection. The two-disc set can be bought for a surprisingly reasonable price on Amazon.com and is well worth purchasing, if for no other reason than the fact that you're not likely to find it in your local Blockbuster (though you can get a basic copy from Netflix). It includes many extras. The German dialogue with English subtitles may turn off some poeple, but it frankly adds an air to the film that dubbing would miss.

To conclude: If you're a fan of movies like this, or just enjoy a good film, I highly recommend you make time for "M".

4 out of 5 stars M- The Murderer Among Us.......2007-01-22

Filmed in 1931 this is the first serial killer movie...

M is the story of a serial killer who terrorizes a German town. As you follow the story you get to see the city going mad, the hunt for the killer, the killer at work and then eventually Lorre fleeing for his life.. Before the killer strikes hes always whistling this haunting tune, very eerie. A blind man who sells balloons ends up using his keen observances and hearing of the whistling and putting 2 and 2 together...eventually aiding in his capture and bringing the killer to justice.

The imagery is haunting, the whistling is creepy and really grates on your nerves, the scariness is more of a what you dont see kind of deal ... Ive also have heard this film somewhat models the story of German serial killer Peter Kurten aka the Vampire of Dusseldorf who in 1929 was commiting assaults and murders of children. Fritz denied the movie having anything to do with Kurten yet there is a similiarity between the film and the murders that occurred... though this could have been a coincidence.

This is definitely an acquired taste.. Not for everyone

But I have to say this...If you have a short attention span, dont buy this film.

4 out of 5 stars Moments of menace..........2007-01-08

The economy, austerity and directness of the films of Fritz Lang made him one of the most profound, and precise filmmakers...

Lang, a master of the German expressionist film, shot his first talkie, a crime drama considered a landmark in the story of suspense movies... It was a shocking idea for its time, based on the real-life killer Peter Kurten, headlined as the Vampire of Düsseldorf...

'M' is about a terrorized city, and a plump little man with wide eyes (often chewing candy) who is a pathological child-killer, unable to control his urge for killing...

The film embodies several Lang themes: the duality between justice and revenge, mob hysteria, the menacing anticipation of watching a helplessly trapped individual trying fruitlessly to escape as greater forces move inexorably in, and, for probably the first time in the cinema, it adds a new dimension to suspense: pity... For the killer is clearly mentally sick... He cannot overcome the overwhelming compulsion of his murderous disease, and yet, we see him hunted down and almost lynched as a criminal, rather than treated as a sick man...

Early in the film, the killer is heard whistling the Grieg theme from 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'. This theme inexorably becomes imbued with menace... And when we see no more than a girl looking in a shop window, the melody on the sound-track told us chillingly that the murderer is there, just out of sight...

The Murderer is played by Peter Lorre in a virtuoso performance that has barely been matched in all the thrillers he has made since 'Casablanca,' 'The Maltese Falcon,' and 'The Mask of Dimitrios.' When the photographs of his victims, all little girls, are shown to him, he jumps back and twitches with horror...

With powerful visuals, Lang's motion picture is Lorre's first film... His performance as the corpulent, hunted psychopath is a masterpiece of mime and suggestion... Lorre is the archetypal outsider-outside the law and society because of his compulsive crimes, outside the balancing society of the underworld because he is not a professional criminal... He had only twelve lines of dialog...

In the most famous of all about a pathological killer - Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho' - Anthony Perkins lacked not only the threat of the tortured Peter Lorre, but also the dimension of invoking our incredulous sympathy...

'Psycho' reeked with blood and horror, whereas the suspense of 'M' is subtle... A child's balloon without an owner, a rolling ball, are enough to tell us that another murder had been committed... The audience, trapped in its seats, torn by ambivalent feelings towards the killer, watched him trapped as the net is pulled tight...
