Wow.......2007-01-09
Didn't really expect much, but was highly pleased. Indy is so frickin' hot. Great video. Definitely want more from CandyGirl. The stripteases and Indy's scenes are the only parts I watch.
The second DVD in the Sweet Satisfaction series..........2006-09-19
I loved this DVD, I bought it along with CandyGirl Video's "Jasmine Grey's Personal Panties" DVD. It has great variety, it's over 2 hours and the girls are amazing. Since there's no description of the DVD, here's the description straight from the official site.......
"Sweet Satisfaction Kobe Lee" is loaded with over 2 hours of action that only CandyGirl Video can deliver. 12 of our hottest Favorite Flavors are featured in these various scenes: Public Nudity, Upskirts, Luscious Lingerie, Shower and a Shave, Stripteasing, Panty Teasing, Explicit Nudity and more! The DVD is kicked off by Indy, who shows how she won the title of "Miss Nude North America" at the 2004 Nudes-A-Poppin' show. Next, Ariel Andrews, Gallery magazine's Feb. 2002 Girl Next Door Centerfold, gets wet in the tub in a sheer white micro thong. Then, we watch Rachel Minx strip out of her clothes while she watches tv. Next, an innocent game of pool between Ariel Andrews and Micah Ashley (Gallery magazine's Nov. 2002 Girl Next Door Centerfold) is turned into an upskirt lover's dream come true as our camerman takes some of our most intrusive shots yet! Then, Karen Money is featured in a Luscious Lingerie video. We then go panty shopping with Nicole Sweet. Nicole was so pleased with her purchase that she tried her new panties on in the parking lot! Then, all natural busty and true redhead Vanilla Creme gives us our most intimate Luscious Lingerie video to date. Next, Indy (Gallery magazine's Dec. 2003 Girl Next Door Centerfold) comes clean with a sexy shower and a shave. Addie Juniper is up next with a sexy attempt to squeeze into a tiny tight pair of jeans! Then it's our Favorite Flavor feature of Kobe Lee. You'll get to see Kobe teach a sexy class entitled "Bondage 101", get soaking wet in the shower, tease us both in and out of her sheer micro thong and provide us with some voyeuristic shots in a Sleepy Girl video. Then, Jenni Lee shows how a real Striptease should be performed. Jasmine Grey then invites everyone to see some sexy panty teasing in public. Then, Jordan Bentley (published in FHM magazine, seen on MTV's "Next" and making national news as part of "The Hunt" web site) tries to keep her mini-dress from blowing up during a windy Upskirt scene and finally, Indy wraps up the DVD with our most Explicit Nude scene ever! Extras include: a video of Jasmine Grey modeling sheer pink lingerie in a hot tub and uncut footage from Kobe Lee's Panty Teasing shoot for this DVD, complete with bloopers and an optional director's commentary.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Ariel Andrews wears a shirt in this DVD that has caused some controversy that we want to explain and finally lay to rest. Ariel wears a shirt in this DVD that says "almost legal". This has caused us to receive emails from viewers wanting to know if Ariel is an underage model. The answer is NO. Ariel was 21 years old when we shot this scene. I had her wear this shirt because I thought she looked good in it, plus I thought it was simply making an ironic, silly joke to have a grown woman wear a shirt stating that she was "almost legal" when in fact, she IS 100% legal . Unfortunately, not everyone "gets it". I thought it would be funny to have a grown woman wearing a shirt saying she was "almost legal", but I NEVER intended for people to think she was underage. All of CandyGirl Video's models are 18 years of age or older. We would NEVER work with under age talent. We want to stress to everyone that Ariel's T-shirt was nothing more than a creative attempt to make a humorous and ironic statement. Ariel Andrews posed for
Gallery magazine just a few months after this shoot, and has appeared on countless nude amateur sites.
There you have it. Hopefully it wont be another year before we see another DVD in this great series!

Steven Spielberg produced this underwhelming 1986 effort at a slapstick spin on Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The pre-Oscar Tom Hanks stars with Shelley Long as a married couple whose efforts to finish construction on their home are sabotaged by costly and sporadically funny accidents. The unfinished domicile becomes a metaphor for their troubled relationship, as evidenced by Long's character's attraction to a madman violinist (Alexander Godunov). Hanks is the only reason at this point to check this film out. Richard Benjamin (My Favorite Year) directs but with no flair or distinction. --Tom Keogh.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious.......2007-06-19
One of the overlooked comedy classics, with Tom Hanks at his pre-Oscar best and Shelley Long matching him. Snappy writing and great one-liners makes this a movie you'll be quoting often. If you ever do any home improvement project, you'll find yourself muttering, "Two weeks!" over and over. Also makes a great gag gift for anyone about to buy or renovate a house.
Note to Amazon: your internal review has factual errors. A major plot point is that Hanks' and Long's characters are NOT married, and she is not "attracted to a long-haired violinist" - he is a snobby conductor and her ex-husband, to whom she is NOT attracted anymore. It is difficult to take the reviewer's opinion seriously when he's so far off the mark on basic plot points.
M. Hofman.......2007-05-17
This is one of my very favorite movies ever. Whether the critics liked it or not, if you own a home, you will get a kick out of this movie. If you don't own a home, watch it anyway because Tom Hanks and Shelly Long are hilarious. We have found ourselves quoting one-liners from it on many occasions.
The Money Pit.......2007-03-08
arrived on time and was in excellant condition, the price was reasonable. The shipping was a little high for a DVD.
relaxing comedy.......2007-02-26
This is a good romantic comedy. Just relax and enjoy it.
By the way, there are no guns and almost no crimes in the movie.
Anyone Building a Home Must See This.......2007-02-07
This movie was always a fun one to watch; however, after Katrina in New Orleans, it was the best comic relief on those days when it was all going wrong as we rebuilt the house. Love the movie!

Paul Newman's career slipped onto an unstoppable track with Somebody Up There Likes Me, his 1956 biopic about boxer Rocky Graziano. Of course that was his second picture, the first being the oft-joked-about bungle The Silver Chalice. Newman's Method-y intensity and dazzling good looks brought him stardom, and his intelligence and uncommon seriousness as an actor kept his movies interesting, especially as he tackled some of the best roles of the "antihero" era--an era he helped create.
Somebody Up There Likes Me is included in The Paul Newman Collection, a bulging seven-DVD package that shakes out thusly: three late-1950s titles from the beginning of his career, one mid-sixties hit, and three lesser films of the early 1970s. It's by no means a "best of" compilation, being limited to Warners and MGM titles, but it gives a flavor of Newman in his prime time. He got the Graziano role after James Dean died, and his performance is a very busy, post-Brando jumble of tics and mumbles. The movie holds up nicely as a boxing picture, and the location NYC shooting won an Oscar for cinematographer Joseph Ruttenberg (you can see why director Robert Wise got hired to do West Side Story after this). Sal Mineo and Steve McQueen are in the cast as Newman's fellow j.d.s.
The Left-Handed Gun (1958), based on a teleplay by Gore Vidal, is a truly weird, compulsively watchable artifact from the psychological-Western genre. Newman plays Billy the Kid, glowering and grimacing like a rebel without a cause. It's one of those films that has much more to do with the time it was made than the time it is set; also notable as the big-screen debut for stage and TV director Arthur Penn. The Young Philadelphians (1959) is more conventional, an entertaining soap opera about a young lawyer (Newman) with an old-money Philly name but no money, who gets burned by love and decides to connive his way to the top. Young Robert Vaughn snagged an Oscar nomination for a showy turn as an alcoholic society lad.
Harper (1966) is chockfull of kooky mid-Sixties design and Rat Pack patter (courtesy screenwriter William Goldman). But it must be said that Newman is miscast as the melancholic private eye of Ross Macdonald's literary world, here re-imagined as a wisecracking hepcat who mugs his way through a missing-persons investigation. The supporting cast is a weird over-the-hill gang including Lauren Bacall, Janet Leigh, and Shelley Winters. That film's hero, Lew Harper (renamed from Macdonald's "Archer"), returned in 1976's The Drowning Pool, a more bearable if somewhat humdrum whodunit set in New Orleans. Newman's wife, Joanne Woodward, has a supporting part, but the picture is most notable for an early Melanie Griffith nymphet role.
Pocket Money (1972) is one of those only-in-the-seventies movies that pairs Newman with Lee Marvin in a drowsy, nearly plotless comedy. Both actors give elaborate performances: Newman plays a numbskull two-bit cattle broker who takes absolutely everything literally, and Marvin is his buddy in Mexico who signs on for an ill-considered cattle-buying job. One of the credited screenwriters is Terrence Malick, and the movie has a highly eccentric feel for language. Finally, The Mackintosh Man (1973) is one of the periodic duds that director John Huston would crank out in his otherwise starry career, with Newman as a spy on an incomprehensible case in England. The first half is a red herring, and Dominique Sanda (more recently of The Conformist) is out of depth with the English language. It's a bleak film with a kind of grinding fascination, and the Maurice Jarre score is catchy but fatally overused. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:
A sample of (lesser known) Newman.......2007-05-14
Paul Newman is one of the all-time great movie actors with a career that now spans six decades. Among his biggest movies are The Hustler, Hud, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Cool Hand Luke The Verdict, The Color of Money (for which he won the Oscar) and even Cars. None of these movies are in the Paul Newman Collection, which features seven of his second-tier efforts. That does not mean they are bad movies, merely not as big.
In chronological order, the first movie in the set is Somebody Up There Likes Me, a biopic of boxer Rocky Graziano. Directed by Robert Wise (who had previously made one of the best boxing movies ever, The Set-Up), this is an entertaining film of a man successfully wrestling his inner demons to become a success. In one of his earliest roles, Newman is already showing why he a cinema immortal.
The next movie is The Left-Handed Gun, a decent, if unspectacular, version of the Billy the Kid story (the best version of this story is Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid). Newman, as the title character, plays Billy similarly to his Rocky: a self-destructive outlaw. Unlike Graziano, however, Billy never finds redemption through family and friends.
The Young Philadelphians has a more easy-going Newman playing the ambitious Anthony Lawrence who climbs the social and business ladder, often with more than a little ruthlessness. When his best friend is accused of murder, his efforts towards acquittal threaten both his happiness and reputation. This is an entertaining melodrama. A little bonus is seeing a pre-Batman Adam West as a man who is very briefly married to Anthony's mother.
Harper is the first of two Newman movie adaptations of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer novels (the name was changed to continue Newman's string of "H" movies: Hud, Hustler, etc.). This fun private eye story is a real all-star flick: it also stars Janet Leigh, Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner and Shelly Winters. The plot deals with Harper's attempts to find a missing - apparently kidnapped - man; in his search, he unearths all kinds of family scandal. The sequel (and last movie, chronologically) is The Drowning Pool, which transports Harper to New Orleans to help an old flame with a blackmailer. Like most sequels, this is a pale shadow of its predecessor, but it has its moments. It also has Melanie Griffith in one of her earliest roles.
Pocket Money is probably the weakest in the set, an amiable but meandering movie with Newman as a modern day cowboy hired to buy and transport some cattle for a shady businessman. Lee Marvin co-stars as his friend and partner. It's a movie in which the parts just don't seem to fit together all that well.
Finally, there is the Mackintosh Man, a spy flick with Newman as a British agent out to stop a Soviet network inside England that specializes in smuggling people out of the country. While this is an interesting movie, Newman's foray into James Bond territory is a little too serious to be fully enjoyed. From an acting standpoint, this is probably his least compelling role in the set.
There are lots of bonuses with the set, including commentaries on the first four movies; the best of these is William Goldman's amusing and biting track for Harper. On the Amazon rating system, Pocket Money is a low-three stars, The Left Handed Gun, The Mackintosh Man and the Drowning Pool a straight three, and the remainder four stars. As is my practice with boxed sets, I average this out to a high-three stars or low-four, but the extras push it up to a comfortable four stars. You don't get the best or most well-known Newman with this set, but you do get a good sampling of his talent and range.
movie buff.......2007-03-11
I really enjoyed watching theses seven movies the Young Philadelphians, Somebody Up There Likes me and, the Drowning Pool and Harper were amoung my favorite. the Left handed Gun, the Mackintosh Man, and Pocket were good but seemed to be a little slow in parts. I still enjoyed them however, I've always liked Paul Newman, and there are not to many movies,
he has been in that I haven't liked.
The Paul Newman Collection.......2007-03-08
I love this collection. I have some of these on VCR but now I have them all on DVD and I am thrilled.
One of His Best Movies - Some Not So Great.......2007-02-14
"Somebody Up There Likes Me", the movie that made Paul Newman,is included here, along with stylishly dated "Harper", and one of thousands (it seems) movies about Billy the Kid, "The Left-Handed Gun". The others are typically cool Newman movies. A pretty good collection, but I'd still like to see a box set of his classics.
It's about time!.......2007-01-23
I've waited years for the DVD release of my favorite Newman movie, The Young Philadelphians. That opus is a wonderful example of 1950s melodrama with wonderful characters and acting, a joy to watch. Nevertheless, Hollywood for years busied itself with releasing DVDs of every middling new movie and TV series, ignoring quality works like TYP and the Heston/Hayward masterpiece, The President's Lady, which still is not available. For the first time The Young Philadelphians is here on DVD.
Enjoy!
It's time now to release The President's Lady and others of its type!

Amazon.com essential video
Martin Scorsese handles directing duties in this 1986 sequel to the classic 1961 film The Hustler, which marks the return of Paul Newman to the role of pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Anxious to break into the big time again, Eddie finds a talented protégé (Tom Cruise) to groom; but with the addition of the latter's manipulative girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and the wild streak in Cruise's character, the trio make for a fascinating portrait in group psychology. The cast is brilliant, the script by Richard Price (Clockers) is a paragon of tightly controlled character study and drama (at least in the film's first half), and Scorsese and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus make an ornate show of the collision and flight of pool balls through space--something of a metaphor for the dynamics among the three principals. The film is generally regarded as weaker in its second half, and rightly so, as everything that was interesting in the first place disappears. Still, Newman won a deserved Oscar for his performance. --Tom Keogh
Product Description
Legendary actor Paul Newman (MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE) and Academy Award(R)-nominee Tom Cruise (Best Actor, 1996, JERRY MAGUIRE) ignite the screen in this powerful drama. Brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese (GANGS OF NEW YORK), Newman re-creates one of his most memorable roles from THE HUSTLER. As Fast Eddie Felson, he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned." To prove his point, he forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young pool hustler with a sexy, tough-talking girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, THE PERFECT STORM). But when Vince's flashy arrogance leads to more than a few lost matches, all bets are off between Eddie and him. THE COLOR OF MONEY will electrify you with its suspenseful story, dazzling cinematography, and dynamic performances.
Customer Reviews:
Great Product.......2006-03-10
The movie I bought was in fantasic shape I would buy from this shipper again.
Luk itself is an art..........2005-09-13
Scorsese's movies are a warranty of quality, and this one ain't an exception. Newman's performance was exceptional, and if you've seen the Hustler, you can also aprecciate how he has developed. Cruise is actually pretty good when compared to his early work.
Very good 80's classic.
A great sequel.......2005-05-15
A sequel of sorts of Newman's 1960 THE HUSTLER, and a great one. Newman, long out of the pool game now, but still unable to forget it, finds Tom Cruise shooting the daylights out of the game one night and talks the brash young kid into going on the road and becoming a hustler, with Newman as his mentor. Then halfway through the picture Newman gets the bug to play again. He and Cruise meet up in Atlantic City in a match and Newman wins, only he learns that Cruise lost on purpose to collect a bigger debt. Although it's just an example of his pupil learning his lessons too well, Newman is crestfallen; but he refuses to share in the money - thus he's purified under fire and comes away clean. It's a bit of a shock to see the movie shift from Cruise to Newman halfway through, but the ending redeems it. Both Cruise and Newman are simply mesmorizing to watch. Everything in the movie seems to work perfectly: the gritty pool-hall settings, the minor characters (especially Forest Whitaker as a hustler) - everything. Definitely worth a watch.
The Color Of Money: The coolest Scorsese flick.......2005-01-04
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors living today. Films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The King Of Comedy, and his most recent The Aviator are modern day classics.
The Color Of Money is also on the list of Scorsese's movie portfolio, and it's also one of the best movies made in general. The film stars Paul Newman (The Hustler) and Tom Cruise (Jerry Maguire, Rain Man) as hustlers out to make big cash in the pool halls. Newman reprises his role as Fast Eddie Felson, from 1961's film The Hustler, an oldtimer who is looking for new talent to sport around, Tom Cruise plays his target Vincent, a talented pool player and potential hustler. Felson teaches Vincent and his girl sidekick Carmen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) everything there is to know about professional hustling and then out they go across country hustling through every state they pass on their way to the big championship in Atlanta. The highlight of the film is in the tense relationship between the desperate Felson, the crazy jealous Vincent and the manipulative Carmen, and how they manage to work as a team.

This DVD needs EXTRAS LIKE THEY DID FOR ROUNDERS.......2004-12-06
Simply put, I'll watch my old VHS tape of this forever. I will not buy a DVD of any mainstream movie that has no extras. GET ON IT ALREADY. Put Newman and Cruise together again for a commentary track. Assemble a handful of pros to do a featurette on it! I've seen other movies revamped two or three times with DVD extras but this one just keeps getting printed with a plain old brown wrapper. Put the Money where your mouth is!

Modeled after 1963's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Jerry Zucker's Rat Race lacks the irreverence of Zucker's 1980 hit Airplane! but has enough chuckles to make it an agreeable time-killer. Like Mad, Mad, Mad..., it employs a huge ensemble of comedy stalwarts, assembled by an eccentric hotelier (pearly-toothed John Cleese) to race from Las Vegas to New Mexico for a $2 million jackpot. With a backstage gambling subplot, Rowan Atkinson's Italian-geek lunacy, Seth Green's slacker antics, and some nicely understated work from SCTV alumnus Dave Thomas, the movie has almost as many highlights as clunkers, and Zucker's embrace of easy gags and traditional slapstick will tickle anyone's old-fashioned funny bone. Other ingredients are hopelessly stale: Whoopi Goldberg's frantic mugging, Cuba Gooding's latter-day Stepin Fetchit, "mature" humor that compromises the movie's broad appeal, and the assumption that crashing vehicles are inherently hilarious. Lamentable decisions, perhaps, but Rat Race maintains a pleasantly altruistic spirit. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Replaced my worn out disc........2007-05-07
Loved the movie so much that we wore ours out, and we needed a new one. Fast delivery, so we are very happy.
Slow start but funny movie.......2007-01-23
I watched this movie because I was assured by someone whose judgment on comedy I trust implicitly that it was worth watching. Otherwise I almost surely would have given up, because it takes far too long for the story to get off the launchpad. (John Cleese and Dave Martin are both entirely wasted in their roles. A real shame.)
But when it does take off, it becomes a Roman candle and burns very brightly indeed. There's a certain scene where all of the dull preliminaries are clearly over, and you see a couple of knuckleheads come up with what must be one of the very worst examples of problem-solving in human history. The result wass (for me) beyond funny. It was nearly stroke-inducing, I laughed so hard. And in this scene, as with several others, it wasn't just the extreme gag (which was definitely funny), but also the performances from the actors, who strive to maintain calm in the face of the rising tide of chaos and insanity that is, after all, pretty much of their own making.
The movie continues to encounter a few bumps and drags even after it's gotten underway. There was one scene in particular (involving a Seinfeld alum) that my friend thought was priceless, but I felt like it was a rehash of a gag I'd seen several times before. When I saw the premise, I knew exactly how it would end up. But there were still plenty of solid laughs for me, and for the most part, once the film gets rolling, it maintains a furious comedic pace which at times reaches up and touches the truly manic. The screenwriters came up with some really original gags and then played them to the extreme.
The movie exhibited a curious symmetry in that the end was dull and mechanical and not at all funny, as if they felt the need to bring the movie back to the tedium of the beginning. But I'm talking about only the last brief scene. (Apparently the producer owed a favor to a lame 90's rock band.) It's just unfortunate that the movie ended with a clunk instead of a bang.
Not Worth Your Time.......2006-10-16
Vegas - a city where millions go hoping to get rich. And for nine lucky people, that just might come true. While playing the slots, each of these people won a special gold coin inviting them to lunch. At the lunch, they learn they have been selected to participate in a race for $2 million dollars. All they have to do is be the first to get to a locker in the train depot in Silver City, New Mexico.
Naturally, everyone is skeptical at first. But what if it is true? No one can walk away from that possibility, and they all begin to race for the money. But set backs in the form of airport closures, car wrecks, and cows stand in their way. Who will get there first?
The more important question to ask is, does the audience care? In my case, the answer is no. I kept watching, waiting for the movie to get better, but it never did. There were a few truly laugh out loud moments, but most of the movie fell flat.
The biggest problem it had is the lack of character development. With a running time of just under two hours, there isn't time to get to know all the characters. Since I didn't care, I didn't find their predicaments funny.
Then there is the climax. Instead of building on everything that had come before, it took a turn out of nowhere that wasn't even that funny. It was more of an anti-climax that really made me feel like I had wasted my time.
The few funny moments in this movie aren't worth watching the rest of the movie to see. Instead of wasting your time here, watch the classic that inspired it, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.
Laugh Out Loud.......2006-06-11
This movie is a hilarious laugh out loud movie - every second is filled with humor! The cast was amazing - everyone fit their roles. The movie is filled with wacky twists and turns, and the ending is something that no one expects. The theme song to go with the movie is very catchy, I loved it.
A treat for a Saturday matinee.......2006-05-14
Top comedians - Mr. Bean, John Cleese (Fawlty Towers), Whoophi Goldberg and Kathy Najimi(Sister Act), Cuba Gooding Jr. to name a few; plus a lot of actions and fast, rythmic songs to match with it, the movie offers a wonderful past time for a Saturday afternoon.
What I like best is the beginning, when the 6 groups knew of the race (very much like the reality show amazing race) to be the first to reach the 001 locker at a New Mexico train station for 2 million USD, they expressed disbelief and intention of not joining the race. How fast they changed their minds! The veteran comedians saved the movie from being a cliche.
Though the ending is formulaic, the story plot is not boring and the songs inspiring, especially the opening theme song. Among its kind, Rat Race manages to be refreshing and entertaining. Perfect for a matinee.

Prime Suspect#6.......2007-06-13
Just love Helen Mirren. I have them all. I wish there were more. She is a striving woman in a men's world.
Poorly packaged........2007-05-06
I ordered the entire series of this excellent show. Unfortunately, I had to order episode #5 three times before I got one that arrived undamaged. Seems the discs were not properly secured inside the package and they arrived scratched. I was not pleased to have been charged the cost of return shipping to Amazon. I will think twice before ordering anymore DVDs from Amazon.
Simply breathtaking.......2007-03-03
As in every film she appears in, Helen Mirren takes my breath away in Prime Suspect 5. It's impossible to take your eyes off her when she's on screen, and I can watch her movies endlessly and always find new depth in her characterizations. This entry in the series is just as good as 1,2,3,6 and 7 (4 was still good, but broken up into shorter stories, so for me not as impactful). Mirren is divine, and as much as I love all her performances, her embodiment of the complex, lonely and deeply ethical Tennison will always be my favorite.
The absolute BEST television crime drama!.......2007-02-15
Helen Mirren is my new favorite actor, and in this British drama, she captivated me. I never wanted the DVD to end!
Great actress, great series!.......2007-02-12

Amazon.com essential video
Part of the late-'70s wave of films about strong women (as if none had existed before that), Julia starred Jane Fonda as writer Lillian Hellman in a story based on some of Hellman's own writings. The stronger woman here is the title character (Vanessa Redgrave), a socially active young woman who teaches Hellman the importance of sticking to her beliefs--even in the face of Nazi terror. The subplot focuses on Hellman's growth as a writer, under the supportive wing of lover Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards). Lushly photographed by Fred Zinnemann, it's one of the few films that projects a sense of how a writer writes; it also was unafraid to explore the dark consequences of conscience, when Resistance-fighter Julia is captured by the Germans. Robards and Redgrave both won Oscars (leading to Redgrave's Zionist hoodlums acceptance speech). Watch for Meryl Streep in a tiny role in her film debut. --Marshall Fine
Description
Based on a story from Lillian Hellman's best-seller, "Pentimento." Hellman (Jane Fonda) recalls her lifelong relationship with the fiercely independent and politically minded Julia (Venessa Redgrave). Born to great wealth, Julia devotes her life to political causes fighting fascism in the 1930's. While Hellman is travelling in Europe, she is approached by one of Julia's political friends (Maximilian Schell) and is swept into Julia's world, smuggling money across hostile borders. Featuring Meryl Streep in her film debut, Julia won three 1977 Academy Awards®, including Vanessa Redgrave as Best Supporting Actress, Jason Robards as Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay Adaptation.
Customer Reviews:
Lousy.......2007-03-08
Jane Fonda way over-acts, and the direction and production values are just one step above made-for-television level.
Ready to throw Fonda away; don't until you see this.......2007-02-15
Jane Fonda, with Ms. Redgrave, makes this a reasonable and incredible synopsis of the war and difficulties of free-thinkers at this time. When you see the poor publicity Fonda has gotten recently because she's upset about the latest war, remember too, that you need to see her films and read her autobiography. She is brilliant.
She's been there; done that. She deserves great recognition for this wonderful, valid, strong, creative experience of her brave, yet scared character here. She and Redgrave portray the best of intellectuals. And lately, intellectuals seem to be forgotten by the movie business. Here is a saga, a journey, worthy of high praise. Doesn't anyone miss the wonderful historic dramas of times past? This is one, with acting worthy of acclaim.
Continuing enjoyment through the years.......2007-01-28
This has been a favorite film since my first viewing when it was initially released. The tension of the times and the quality of acting combine to reflect Hellman's personal experience. I wanted to add it to my very select library of film, now available on DVD.
Decent movie.......2007-01-11
The history aspects were good. The movie was too deep for my taste and I didnt like the ending.
Actually, 0 Stars Because..........2006-10-08
...I haven't bought the DVD yet. Loved/still love the movie as it was. But please don't just write movie reviews. I would primarily like to hear about shipping satisfaction and whether or not you think the DVD format/editing/quality etc. are to your expectations. Did you accidentally buy widescreen and want to warn others not to if they don't like letter-boxing? I ask reviewers to please remember to include product information. Thanks.

A cheesy little comedy..........2007-01-26
... but DeVito's speech at the shareholder's meeting was required viewing in one of my MBA classes. The movie can be a good primer on hostile takeovers, how and why they are done. The sugar-sweet happy ending was a let-down (I guess I'm a greedy uncaring goob), but the lessons of the movie weren't lost.
Very good movie for business lessons.......2006-11-13
A great movie to be used in teaching business. The movie shows how the changes in the enviroment affect the companies that don't innovate themselves. And it's good to show how the capitalism drives de growth of economie.
Seasonal Classic.......2005-10-30
I'm an avid movie maniac. I have certain films that I can only watch at certain times of the year, and do, every year. Other Peoples Money, starts off my fall movie viewing, after Halloween of course. I love the new England Autumn charm of this film. The story is good, dialogue clever and the chemistry between Miller and DeVito is scary. An unlikely romanic couple if ever there was. A Classic in my book!
OPM- Used in my Business Management classes..........2005-10-10
There is no nudity in this movie but there are some vaguely sexual discussions. Even some adults might miss the true points being made but you may want to consider that before allowing children to see OPM.
That said, this is the best business movie I have ever come across. When I first saw it in the theater I was all for Gregory Peck's character until DeVito's speech at the end which is truly thought provoking. In teaching business management at the University of Southern Mississippi, I have my students watch the whole thing at the beginning of the semester to acquaint them with the notion that those who have the goal of making money are not all bad. For some reason, even though they want to be in business, my students too often think of running a business and making money as grubby, nasty chores performed by evil people. The characters in OPM force them to examine those beliefs.
Other reviewers have made the point that this a funny movie and it truly is. The humor is probably better appreciated by adults than children since it is not of the slapstick kind but rather uses plays on words.
While the characters in OPM are somewhat one-dimensional, what I enjoyed is that they are always true to themselves. When offered a million dollars by Piper Laurie's character to go away , DeVito responds "It is not enough." She was being true to her goals of minimizing conflict in her company and he was being true to his goals of maximizing his wealth. When asked why, he gives an answer that shows that he doesn't accept the idea that he is the bad guy in this drama.
I particularly appreciated the movie not making DeVito's character out to be a totally bad guy. That is a real failing of most movies coming out of Hollywood. Other reviewers have talked about how his relationship with Penelope Ann Miller's character shows his humanity but I think people should take note of his relationship with his chauffeur and his secretary and their loyalty to him. He makes use of his reputation as a tough guy to serve his business needs but there is much more to the man.
All together, this is truly a great movie. It amazes me that it took so long for it to come out on DVD since it has all the stars in the world (DeVito, Peck, Miller, Laurie, Stockwell, etc.)
New England Wire & Cable.......2005-09-28
Other People's Money is a wonderful movie, full of smart dialogue, good music, and a terrific Danny DeVito performance. DeVito is his usual funny, and easy-going self, while Gregory Peck is a strong-willed patriarch. Very good stuff there. The weakest performance is from Penelope Ann Miller, who isn't really convincing as the corporate attorney, but the material is so good that it saves the movie. This is a 5 star film, however, it loses a 1/2 star, because of the last scene, which feels a bit tacked on. Otherwise, a smart and funny film from the director of Moonstruck.
