Much better than your average cop-and-dog movie (e.g., K-9), Turner and Hooch is really a love story about a control freak (Tom Hanks) who gradually resigns to the messy chaos of a sweet hulk of a pooch named Hooch. The excuse for this relationship is that the dog can identify a murderer and Hanks needs him, but the film is really about such hilarious moments as Hanks bathing Hooch with a long brush, and a wild chase through the streets when the sharp-eyed mutt spots his suspect. Layered over this is a healthy love story between Hanks and animal vet Mare Winningham, who share a terribly sexy scene together--while fully clothed--doing no more than making breakfast. (Hanks directed this scene, though Roger Spottiswoode directed the rest of the movie.) --Tom Keogh
Description
Academy Award(R)-winner Tom Hanks (Best Actor, 1995, FORREST GUMP) stars as Scott Turner, a compulsively neat detective whose tidy world goes to the dogs when he's forced to team up with the only witness to a crime -- a drooling slob of a junkyard dog named Hooch. Not exactly man's best friend, Hooch turns Turner's life upside down, wrecking Turner's home, career, and budding romance! It's a hilarious, nonstop test of wills between this mismatched duo, leading to the most unlikely friendship you've ever seen! TURNER & HOOCH thrilled audiences nationwide with its offbeat blend of humor and suspense -- this fast-paced box office megahit is loads of fun!

Tom hanks and a drooling dog.......2007-01-23
funny movie. tom hanks is an uptight cop, who gets custody of a dirty smelly drooling dog after his owner is murdered...
fun movie.
Best Movie Dog.......2007-01-22
What a great movie. Ever since this movie came out my daughter has wanted a mastif just like Hooch. Thank goodness she can satisfy herself with this dogs antics by watching the movie over and over again. Although this movie looks very eighties/early nineties it has timeless appeal. Definately worth owning.
A man and his dog.......2006-09-17
There are buddy cops. And then there are those like Turner & Hooch. The war begins when a ordinary, clean detective (Tom
Hanks, who's wonderful, and comedic) must solve a crime with a slobbery, chew on people's shoes, mess with records and everything else that's your property dog named Hooch (who, if you're smart like me and see the end credits, is played by Beasley) must solve a murder he was witness to of a old man
(and Turner's friend). The only big roles here are of Hanks,
Beasley, and Mare Winningham, who plays Turner's doctor and girlfriend later on in this movie, but that does'nt stop it from being good, and it is.
one of my favorites.......2006-09-13
I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. I LOVE this movie, Hanks and Beasley are just wonderful to watch over and over. A little action, a little romance and a lot of laughs..perfect!!
Hooch.......2006-08-05
This movie is hilarious. I loved the dog Hooch. He really made the movie. Well worth watching.

Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
A plane crash in the freezing Alaskan wilderness pits intellectual billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) against self-satisfied fashion photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) in a brutal struggle for survival. Each soon discovers that the greatest danger resides not in nature, but from human fear, treachery, and quite possibly murder.

"The Edge"- The Brilliant Billionairre.......2007-06-08
The edge of your seat is where you'll be once the movie gets rolling. It's a nail-biting ride based on survival of the "smartest". Don't misunderstand...there's not a slow start. This movie merely takes a brief time to set an interesting background which is crucial to the plot. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant, as usual. Hopkins plays an extremely well-read Billionairre who "knows everything" according to his wife, Elle MacPherson, who of course plays a super-model. There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you guessing to the very end. I found the last scene to be a little less than ideal. It's somewhat confusing and unnecessary. It is also a little unrealistic. Also, I still don't see the point of the title, "The Edge". Probably just my lack of imagination. Other than that, this movie is well worth the money! Both thumbs up!
"The Edge" - Review.......2007-06-08
"The Edge" is a classic suspense movie that maintains high suspense for the viewer until the very end. I think Anthony Hopkins was as impressive in this movie as in the "Silence of the Lamb".
The Edge .......2007-05-20
If you like adventure, the great outdoors and, or course, Anthony Hopkins, then you will love this movie. There are very few movies that I will watch more then once and this is one of those movies. It is a very good movie that I recommend highly.
who is the most dangerous ?.......2007-05-10
One of the questions to ask in this hair-raising movie is who is actually the most dangerous.....the bear or Robert Green. As frightening as it is, at least the bear is open in his aggressiveness and violence....Green is sneaky and deceitful. He leads you to believe he really is a friend to Charles...Another question to ask is why didn't he bury Stephen's bloody pant leg like Charles had asked him to? He wanted the bear to kill Stephen.....so there would be no witness when it came time for Green to kill Charles. He probably also thought that in killing Stephen, the bear then, would leave Charles and himself alone.
Best Action and Drama For Me........2007-05-07
I love this movie, it was a great acting on Anthony Hopkins and Alex Bawlin. I like the bear and his bad self. I wouldn't give up my CD for any other movie.

Description
A vicious high school student is dead. A gang hit? An act of sudden rage? Or did a once-idealistic teacher finally snap? The issues and the tension hit home when Samuel L. Jackson stars in a gritty urban-school thriller that's "gripping, high-octane entertainment" (Newhouse News Service).
Customer Reviews:
No student can destroy a persons will to teach.......2007-06-20
Samuel L Jackson gives a superb performance in this movie. As the title says, no one, not even a student can destory a persons will to teach, as showed by Samuel L Jackson in this movie. One thing i liked about this movie is that it doesnt really show the student to student problems, it shows the teach to student problems and how strong a teachers will really is. If you like Sam Jackson or just want to see a great movie, get this.
Deeply afflicting.......2007-05-23
This movie is bound to leave you with mixed emotions. It is an emotional and deeply afflicting movie. Samuel L Jackson will always deliver, but his counterparts were lacking. This movie is very powerful, and gives you a real look at what goes on in certain schools where students have been neglected. I recommend this movie to those with an open mind, and a strong stomach.
Gripping film.......2007-01-01
The theme of violence in our schools takes on a different ending than most other films in this genre. In most cases a teacher who is attacked by students and humilitated would probably leave the profession. Sammy's character does something else. Sadly, he was a teacher whose desire to stay led to a sad ending. This films takes a look at violence and gang activity in a California school. The films shows the main character leaving NY for a CA school after violent incident there (in NY).
A little heavy handed, but still really interesting portrait of problems in schools.......2006-09-01
187 is a strange movie about schools. It's strange because this is one of the few pictures that looks at a teacher's perspective of the system and it's strange because it's not a rosy picture of schools. Jackson's portrayal of Trevor Garfield paints a picture of a nervous, worried teacher who was passionate about teaching, but is now scared of the slightest sound, continually checking the corner of his eye, as he's been faced with a near fatal attack a year earlier.
What the film is about is the various teachers' reactions to the students around them. Garfield wants to do good, but has a past that is burning him up inside. John Heard's character is a teacher who's embittered by the students, working to merely cash a paycheck, while kelly rowan's character means well, but is scared and confides in Jackson's character because he is a survivor.
What I love about the film is that there is a realism in the way the teachers communicate with each other. The good and the bad is here. We get a picture of the various attitudes teachers have about their kids and how some events can make or break a teacher. I also love how 187 explores the political and sometimes beuaracratic nature of the classrooms, including the placement of students in a given classroom, and how teachers can sometimes have their jobs put in jeopardy because of very rigid law. Clearly, the writer Scott Yagemann, who is a teacher himself, feels the system has failed and has gotten in the way of a primary goal of teachers when they enter the profession: a desire to teach.
The film is somewhat problematic with an over the top, preachy, and somewhat implausible conclusion. But the writer wears his heart on his sleeve and the above all message about the passion being sucked out of teaching is clear. For that reason, it's as powerful a movie as any about teaching even if it lacks the uplifting conclusion so many others offer.
about the movie 187..............2006-05-31
This film/DVD is sold in Singapore videoshop and I managed to grab a copy for myself ans watch them.....hee hee. The story is basically a teacher teaching groups of bad pupils in a school which three of the bad student get rid of benny (another teacher) which in the end two student shot themselves to die after a teacher use a pistol to shoot himself to let the two bad student have the guts to shoot theselves to die for doing mistakes. The rest of the bad students in the end graduated. This story talk about teachers been attacked in bad school by these bad students. Thios movie is recommended to those whom are interested in this genre of film/DVD.

An enjoyable turkey.......2007-04-18
It's been interesting reading comments treating this as a serious film when really it's one of those films that moves into the 'so bad it's good' genre. I remember 25 years ago laughing myself sick watching it on late-night television. I subsequently found it and some of the outrageous dialogue highlighted in one of those '50 worst movies of all time" type books. "Chicken George is looking for you" - "You tell Chicken George to kiss my sweet black a--." Crazy hair, crazy clothes, crazy performances, it's still good fun and a nice bit of early 70s kitsch. And having John Walton senior as one of the gangsters is one of those classic mis-castings.
Trouble Man.......2007-04-12
Brought back memories from back in the day. Excellent quality! I had not seen this movie since I was kid sneaking into the movie house in Baldwin Hills. I refer this movie to all who wants a ride down memory lane.
"He's definitly trouble".......2007-03-29
The movie was good. Another blaxploitation film to add to your 1970's collection.
Blaxploitation in it's finest form !!!.......2007-03-08
Anyone that is a serious fan of this genre, or is as fasinated with the 70's as I am should jump on purchasing this film without hesitation. I had seen Robert Hooks in smaller roles such as his part in Passenger 57. This man in my opinion stepped into the skin of this character. I read where someone posted that they where disappointed with the score because it wasn't the original, but it sounded great to me. I've never heard the first soundtrack but im hard to satisfy; and I liked it. A must have !!! ..... Mr.T: Where you want it at mutha?!
Oooooooooooooooooooook...lol.......2006-08-16
Without Marvin?????? Anyways, what is that suppose to mean. I don't know what the cat was listening to but you can tell he don't know anything about Marvin Gaye, because he (Mr. Gaye) did the whole soundtrack, and as far as that somebody else singing....it was Marvin. Anyways, getting back to the movie, it was so-so, it was trying to be Shaft, but without the depth...being that it was an blaxploitation flick, it was what it was...it was so-so @ best. The soundtrack is what made the movie...

Harrowing thriller about a hotwired ex-soldier (co-scripter Paddy Considine from Cinderella Man) who returns to his sleepy Irish village to dole out merciless revenge upon the booze- and drug-sodden hoodlums who abused his mentally handicapped younger brother (the astonishing Toby Kebbel). Director Shane Meadows (Once Upon a Time in the Midlands) doesn't shy away from delivering scenes of gripping suspense and violence, but the end result hews closer to an ambiguous meditation on the nature and effect of vengeance a la Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs than a Death Wish-style grindhouse effort. Taut and thought-provoking, Dead Man's Shoes is a must-see for indie film aficionados with a taste for the grittiest of fare. The DVD includes some rollicking commentary by Meadows, Considine, and producer Mark Herbert; an intriguing and heartfelt featurette on Meadows and his own violent past as a teenage skinhead in 1980s England, from which he drew inspiration for this film; and an alternate (and somewhat less satisfying) final scene. -- Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews:
Good film but I thought there were a few flaws.......2007-05-01
I love nothing better than a decent revenge film. Kill Bill Vol 1 is the finest one that I have seen. This one is set in the Derbyshire countryside and starts with Paddy Considine arriving at a disused farmhouse. It because apparent as the story unfolds that the Considine character has a retarded brother and he is hell bent on revenge for something that was done to his brother by a gang of drug dealers led by Gary Stretch. The film soon develops into a dark and disturbing bloody mission of revenge and we eventually learn the full details of the retarded brother and why his brother is so mad.
The most glaring problem that I have with this film is the lack of law enforcement. How can you butcher so many people and get away with in with no intervention by the police ? I could say the same for another recent film by the same director Shane Meadows "This Is England". The film also has a very dark heart. It doesn't seem to believe in forgiveness.
Overall I enjoyed the performances of the main characters but I thought the story was a bit too Tarantino-esque to justify any more than 3 stars.
"God will forgive them, He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven, I can't live with that.".......2007-05-01
In mixing Hitchcock with Cassavettes, "Dead Man's Shoes" is a spare, ever-contemporary revenge yarn, yet told with an old-school, resoundingly pious sensibility. "Shoes" eventually implodes from bare-bones realism to an in-your-face epic, a harshly realistic, atmospheric story of senseless violence, its irrevocable effects and its brutal confrontation.
Directed by British art-house mainstay Shane Meadows (24:7, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands), the story takes place at a grim, anonymous small England village, where everybody seems too afraid to walk the uninviting streets, and yet nothing seems promising in the dilapidated business's and residential neighbourhoods that are hanging by a thread.
We're first introduced to Richard (Paddy Considine, who is also the film's screenwriter), and the only information we first know about him is that he's travelling with his brother Anthony, a mentally spastic younger sibling who clearly has been brutally tampered with in the not-too-distant past. Enigmatic and rather quiet (the first time hear him speak is in opening voice-over "God will forgive them for what they did. I can't allow that.", an ominously forthright prayer if there ever was one), he walks into town, stays low-key and slowly insinuates himself into local taverns and conversations with some subdued, unknowing locals.
After some initial wrangling, we find out that there is a specific agenda for his "visit": to confront a group of shady, drug-dealing, rather petty criminals, unsuspecting of the grimacing, quiet Richard, but yet their involvement with Anthony becomes clearer as flashbacks, bit by bit, tell a cold, terrifying story that has enraged the former soldier to his absolute apex, and believably so.
As Richard initially confronts them with few words other than intoning cryptic warnings, it escalates to creatively nefarious uses of spray paint, from writing threats on the oblivious thieves walls to adorning their faces with a clownish decor. As they grow from frightened to restlessly vigilant to all-too-knowing of this man's priorities, they can't go unfazed from Richard's wrath as one-by-one they meet a brutal demise.
Now all this has the metaphorical structure of an age-old western, though this cowboy is without horses, honour or heroism, and the incendiary revenge that is taken can often be worse than the crime that was committed.
"Shoes" often deftly blends this classic narrative thread with a very present-day indie sensibility (repete with the almost-vertiginous shaky camera and lots of thespian-tingled earnestness), telling a story that is both minimalist and operatic. From an oxygen-masked Considine to an ever-grungy set design, it's a film that wants it both ways, and it satisfies on both front.
Told with as much as heartfelt sincerity (Considine clearly nurtured it as a must-project and the film is undoubtedly grounded in a real-life experience, as "Shoes" often comes across as a potent personal lament) as cathartic brutality, it's a film that's impossible not to respect, and it's often quite gripping, the dingy small-town milieu is authentic and engrossingly foreboding; the religious plot overtones and it's deadly ramifications are as appropriate as they are purposely exaggerated. Considine delivers another ferociously eloquent sense of spiritual self-awakening and it's affected violence, just as he did in his vastly under-appreciated tour-de-force in My Summer of Love, inspiring as much pathos as intentionally ambiguous chills.
Ultimately, "Shoes" meets the ambitions that lye in this consistently absorbing revenge parable. Not a film to disregard, with all it's promise and veracious detail, it is not for the faint hearted.
A masterpiece.......2007-03-18
Low budget, indie spirit. But in the best meaning. The movie itself it is brilliant, but it sounds perfect (the soundtrack is another masterpiece) and the image is an achievement for a movie with low budget.
Take care, it's very darky, very strong. But a whole cinema experience.
Wish they had 6 stars.......2007-02-13
One of the most thought-provoking movies I've ever seen. Stunningly well written - superb acting -stunning direction. This movie is about revenge - pure and simple, but it takes you down the path to where all revenge truly ends up. A man comes back from the army to find his brother has been brutalized and sets out to exact revenge on those responsible - only to come to an awakening himself about the nature of revenge. DO NOT miss this film. I ran out and bought it after seeing it. You will not regret it. Exquisite!
Revenge in the Midlands.......2007-02-01
With it's storyline of an ex-soldier who returns to his hometown to take revenge on the bullies who mistreated his mentally-challenged brother, Dead Man's Shoes, directed and co-written by Shane Meadows, could be described as "Get Carter" for the 21st century. But whereas Mike Hodges 1971 film with Michael Caine was filmed with an icy detachment and featured a cold and distant central hero, Dead Man's Shoes, is shot with a restless hand-held intimacy that evokes feelings of dread and sympathy simultaneously for the mysterious but rather likable character played (very well) by Paddy Considine, who also had a hand in the script. As the bodies pile up and the bad guys begin to panic, the revenge dished out seems to be all out of proportion to the mistreatment of Considine's brother. But then, in a very clever twist, a surprise is unveiled and it's this little jolt that really makes Dead Man's Shoes a memorable and haunting experience.

Everything Great About the Movies.......2007-07-02
This is not only one of the great films of the 1930's, but one of the best and most beloved films in the history of the movies. It spawned a series of "A" pictures which kept the quality just as high and the moviegoing public couldn't get enough of Dashiell Hammett's Nick and Nora Charles. Perhaps because those sequels were so good it is easy to forget just how spectacular was "The Thin Man."
William Powell and Myrna Loy sparkled as the a couple living the lush life and having fun being married. Nick (Powell) had been a celebrated detective who enjoyed drinking martinis as much as solving crimes, so when his wife Nora (Loy) inherited a fortune he opted for more of the former and less of the latter. Nora, who enjoyed martinis as well, had a nose for mystery, however, and couldn't wait for an opportunity to drag a somewhat tight Nick into a case.
It became a formula repeated for decades but only on rare occasions did anything in the movies come close to the style and sophistication of the original source. The screenplay of Albert Hackett and Francis Goodrich perfectly captured the contrast of Hammett's wonderful couple and their dog Asta against the backdrop of murder. Their banter is legendary and was at its zenith in director W.S. Van Dyke's introduction to mystery's favorite couple.
Set during the Christmas season, "The Thin Man" works as a mystery, a sophisticated marital comedy, and a holiday film. James Wong Howe's photography and William Axt's delightful score added just the right touch for a great cast, most notably a lovely young Maureen O'Sullivan. The actual storyline is quite dark and seemy when one stopped to think about it, but the pace was so quick and the tone so playful that audiences were too busy being entertained to do so.
The story involves the rich and eccentric father of Dorothy (O'Sullivan) disappearing suddenly. Nick, who knows her father, and just about every other oddball or criminal in the funny papers gets dragged into the search when his mistress gets murdered and everyone seems to think he's working the case. A couple of murders and several hundred shakers of martinis later, Nick gathers all the suspects together at a dinner party and solves the case.
Everything between the opening credits and the closing is a sheer delight that will make you remember how much fun it can be going to the movies. There is a bit more set-up here than in the films that followed as the actual solving of the mystery was as important as the fun Nick and Nora were having while doing it. Afterwards the focus would be shifted to the fun with the mysteries being secondary.
This easily ranks as one of the top ten films ever made. For sheer entertainment, it is absolutely unbeatable. Just like those Americans jamming into packed theatres to see it upon its first release, those seeing it for the first time will long for more. Fortunately, there are more, and nearly just as good. A film for anyone who loves the movies.
Carefree Cheer with the Charles's.......2007-06-08
A man is working in his laboratory and is interrupted when his daughter Dorothy arrives. Mr. Wynant has an invention that must be kept secret. He discovers that $50,000 in government bonds is missing from his safe. He asks his secretary and girl friend Julia Wolf to return the money, then walks off into the dark night and disappears. Later his daughter Dorothy asks Nick Charles to find her father. Nora drops by with her dog Asta. Wynant's lawyer McCauley doesn't know where he is, but has been sending money. The ex-Mrs. Wynant goes to see Julia Wolf, but she won't be seeing anyone. The police begin to question the people who are involved. The film shows the carefree life of the rich during the Depression. Life is nothing but fun even at a hectic Christmas get-together. Nick drinks as if his life depended on it. [Product placement?]
Nick does not investigate the Julia Wolf murder, but the people involved all come to see him. Nick goes along with Lt. Gill to talk to Arthur Nunheim; he ducks out to avoid talking, but afterwards he will talk to nobody. The police are looking for the missing Wynant. [There is some double-entendre between Nick and Nora.] Nick goes to Wynant's closed shop to investigate at night. Nick digs around and finds a clue, following Asta's interest. They estimate height and weight from the clothes - a big man at least 250 lbs. Nick observes something in one of the bones. Do skeletons all look alike? Not to forensic anthropologists today, or even then.
The conventions of murder mysteries was to gather all the suspects while the detective explains how he solved the murder. So they are all invited to dinner. Nick tells why Wynant didn't kill Julia Wolf or Nunheim. The murderer must be sitting around the dinner table! When this is over Mr. & Mrs. Charles return to San Francisco by Pullman train, luxury travel that is gone forever. [The success of this film began a series that continued for years.]
One of the classics and a delightful diversion.......2007-05-13
This, the first Thin Man, is one of the most beloved of the old time movies, and watching it for the first time since I was a child--I'm sure I saw it in the fifties at one of those three features, a cartoon and Movietone for a dime theaters, but remember nothing--it's not hard to see why. The chemistry between William Powell and Myrna Loy (Nick and Nora Charles) is effervescent, bubbly and delicious. It is obvious they are in love and take such joy in each other's company while teasing each other in a most delightful way. You will just love the way Asta, their dog (who is quite a star in this movie himself) covers his eyes in the final scene--such a delicate dog with such delicate feelings! (Actually I understand that all dogs in movies in those days at least were females for reasons that might be imagined.)
The movie starts a little slow by modern standards, like a stage play, but becomes increasingly enthralling, until suddenly it is over, and YES, let's do a sequel! And they did, six of them, but, well, sequels may or may not be as good as the original. In this case, I understand they weren't and I'm not surprised. It would be hard to achieve something like The Thin Man again. Everything just fell into place, the plot was agreeable and clever, the lesser characters quirky and intriguing, the direction by W.S. "One Take Woody" Van Dyke smooth and focused, and the twenties going on the thirties (but not really) atmosphere was authentic with the rich holding lavish dinner parties and drinking way too much, especially Nick Charles (Powell) who complained that sleuthing caused him to get behind in his drinking.
The witty dialogue comes first from Dashiell Hammett's novel and then from Albert Hackett who adapted the script. Hackett was just getting warmed up. He wrote his first script in 1931 (something called Up Pops the Devil) and his last for The Father of the Bride Part II in 1995 at the age of 95!--well, he got partial credit for that script which was morphed out of his 1951 script for Father's Little Dividend and the original Father of the Bride (1951).
By the way, I always imagined that "the thin man" was the detective Nick Charles, but actually the thin man is Clyde Wynant, the eccentric inventor played by Edward Ellis who goes missing after the first reel. However, everybody thought the same thing, so in the sequels, the thin man is the detective!
One of the reasons the repartee between Nick and Nora is so great is that it was taken (somewhat) from real life exchanges between Hammett and his longtime live-together girl friend the celebrated playwright, Lillian Hellman.
Anybody with any pretension of knowing Hollywood films has seen this. See it yourself if you haven't. It's a delight and will take you back to a time full of styles so very different from those of today.
NICK AND NORA TO THE RESCUE.......2007-04-20
THIS REVIEW WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR THE BOOK BY THE SAME NAME. THE MAIN POINTS THERE APPLY TO THE FILM. I WOULD ONLY ADD THAT WILLIAM POWELL AND MYRNA LOY ARE WELL CAST FOR THE HIGH SOCIETY DETECTIVE AND HIS 'AMATEUR' SLEUTH WIFE. AS FOR THE 5 SEQUELS AS WITH ALL SUCH VENTURES THERE IS A LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURN. ONE GETS CHARLES FATIGUE AFTER THE SECOND FILM. IF YOU NEED A DOSE OF URBANE DETECTIVE THEN STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL. THAT'S THE REAL HAMMETT.
Dashiell Hammett is perhaps better known for creating the classic modern prototypical detective, one Sam Spade the detective-hero (or anti-hero, if you prefer) of the literary noir Maltese Falcon. With the Thin Man he took a different tack in providing a model detective- the urbane Nick Charles, his side-kick society wife Nora and their ever present faithful dog companion, Asta. The story line here centers on a missing eccentric inventor/businessman who it is suspected has been a victim of foul play. Enter Nick, Nora and Asta at the request of his wondering society family (wondering, that is, about the fate of the dough necessary to keep them in their luxuries) and after a series of misadventures and false leads Nick grabs the villain. That is what old Nick has in common with the illustrious Mr. Spade-the dogged (not pun, intended) and tenacious search for the truth and the killer, come what may. If you like your detectives with a light touch this is for you. If you like your detective novels to be minor work of literary art this is also for you. Hammett (along with Raymond Chandler) practically reinvented the previously rather shabby art of the early detective story into literature. Kudos.
The first private detective film to break through the sound barrier..........2007-01-15
"The Thin Man" had the advantage of being based on a successful book by Dashiel Hammett, who had himself been a private eye...
The audience did not have to bother about who murdered the butler with a sliver of ice in the locked library: they were asked to be interested in what was happening now, why it was happening and sometimes how it was happening... They could be just as concerned with the by-play between detective Nick Charles and his wife Nora (William Powell and Myrna Loy) as in wondering who did the murders...
For most of the film, in fact, the audience is led to believe that Winant, the missing inventor, is the murderer; only towards the end does Nick show that Winant has been dead a long time and someone else is doing the killing...
Another factor which made "The Thin Man" notable was that Nick and Nora were - well, almost - real people... Rich they might be: hard drinkers they certainly were... They were a married couple in the film, and they actually managed to appear to enjoy it, making gentle fun of one another in every scene they played...
"The Thin Man" pointed the way, with such success that five follow-ups were made, culminating in "Song of the Thin Man" in 1947.
Most of "The Thin Man" films were predictable but they were historically important for introducing sophistication and witty repartee into the private eye film... Their biggest asset was that they were escapist pictures made for a Depression-weary audience... The Thin Man pictures took the audience away from grim reality simply by ignoring it...

Typical "B" grade horror flick.......2007-04-01
I purchased this video just to see Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke before they got famous. The movie was a bit over the top and alot of unnecessary mayhem.
Strange movie.......2007-01-12
This movie is strange. Sort of a cross between a thiller and a S/M movie. Not one that most people would like and it should not be shown to Childern.
"This motion picture is based on a true story...".......2006-03-04
A nasty little affair, Death Game features cute-as-a-button Colleen Camp and not-quite-as-attractive-as-the-aforementioned-fastening-device Sandra Locke as a couple of giggling psychos prone to violence and clotheslessness that converge on poor sucker Seymour Cassel. After getting his ass kicked by his wife in croquet, Seymour is left all alone at home. On a dark and stormy night soon after, Sandra and Colleen show up lost and wanting to use the telephone. They warm themselves by the fire, Seymour serves some hot chocolate, and Colleen gets some "really great vibes." The festivities begin innocently enough with Seymour making the wet and soapy with our heroines in a (thankfully!) prolonged hot tub sequence set to the tune of some seventies wacka-wacka guitar. The next morning they make breakfast and chew with their mouths open. Seymour throws them out, but they return and spray him with mace, tie him up, slap the stuffing out of him, and make a general mess of the place. As the film progresses, these freewheelin' chicks display their penchant for bondage, shrill conversation, sloppily applied makeup, and fondling each other. They whack a delivery boy with a fireplace poker and drown him in a goldfish bowl. The babes hold a mock court and sentence Seymour to "death at dawn!" The sleaze is applied indiscriminately and by the bucket loads, highlighted by plenty of nudity by Camp (and Locke as well, if that appeals to you). A gut-wrenching theme song about "good old dad...the man who made me what I am today" is repeated ad nauseating. The film was directed by Peter Traynor and features lots of lovely shots of the San Francisco area (just what I needed). The conclusion is an out-of-nowhere knee-slapper. All-in-all, it's an appalling jaw-dropper that I recommend unreservedly for those who can stomach it. "This motion picture is based on a true story. It should serve to remind us that fate allows no man to insulate himself against the evil which pervades our society."
SEXY + SCARY = AWESOME.......2005-09-27
There are no doubt dozens of untapped cinematic gold mines out there just waiting to be discovered and this is one of the best. Check out the premise: one rainy night a family man is alone in his home when two beautiful teenage girls appear at his door, apparently lost. They ask to come in to use the phone and he lets them in. Little does he know what awaits. For the next forty-eight hours, the girls have the time of their lives torturing him with sexuality and violence. They tie him up, beat him up, humiliate him and trash his house.
Sondra Locke, perhaps best known for her Clint Eastwood movies, is phenomenal as the brilliantly disturbed lead, Jackson. She is rageful and calculating and in complete control. Little touches like the ringmaster outfit she dons and the "horns" she draws on her forehead with lipstick make her character the epitome of sexy as well as undeniably frightening. (I hope to find someone like her someday-minus the psychotic tendencies, that is.)
Well known vixen Colleen Camp plays Donna, Jackson's lover and cohort. Obviously the female in the relationship, Donna has a more playful, little girl appeal about her.
Although this movie was not improved for DVD, has horrific sound quality(Seymour Cassel's voice was dubbed with someone else's), and is too dated with it's disco montage, it is quite a little treasure. I rented it a couple years ago and fell in love immediately, particularly with the Jackson character. With all the stupid remakes of today(like Psycho!), it's a pity something like this slips through the cracks. Death Game (a.k.a. The Seducers, a.k.a. Mr. Manning's Weekend) is good and deserves higher recognition.
By the way, this flick is based on a true story. Oooooooohhhh!
Every man's fantasy: to be talked to death?.......2004-12-04
In 'Death Game' Locke and Camp play a pair of women who essentially seek thrills without concern for others. As a matter of fact the more they can torture someone the more enjoyment they get from it. With a premise like this you would certainly hope they would get more mileage from it, but alas, the biggest threat they pose to their married man they have imprisoned in his own home is talking him to death. Locke and Camp are effective in their roles and can certainly turn on the sex appeal while being so menacing that you would not want to get near them. They have plenty of dialogue (too much) and a director who likes to linger on scenes too long. This comes off rather like a stage play on film. There is of course the payoff scene of Locke and Camp in a bath together which should wake you up at that point. I will not give it away, but the final scene involving the van is well shot. I watched this scene several times in slow motion and it was still effective. Overall 'Death Game' is a film with a lot of talk and a lot of tease with very little payoff considering the potential they had with the subject matter.-Bob

Description
Nick and Nora Charles cordially invite you to bring your own alibi to The Thin Man, the jaunty whodunit that made William Powell and Myrna Loy the champagne elite of sleuthing. Bantering in the boudoir, enjoying walks with beloved dog Asta or matching each other highball for highball and clue for clue, they combined screwball romance with mystery. The resulting triumph nabbed four Academy AwardO nominations* (including Best Picture) and spawned five sequels. Credit W.S. "Woody" Van Dyke for recognizing that Powell and Loy were ideal together and for getting the studio's okay by promising to shoot this splendid adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel in three weeks. He took 12 days. They didn't call him "One-Take Woody" for nothing.

Casa Negra's latest Mexican horror re-release, The Man and The Monster, is a direct hybrid of Phantom of the Opera, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Wolf Man. Professor Samuel Magno (Enrique Rambal), cursed by his decision to exchange his soul for being the world's best pianist, plans to heal himself by passing the torch to Laura, his student prodigy. Laura happens to be a doppelganger of Magno's former competitor, Alejandra, who he killed and has stored in his closet. Alejandra's rotting face looks uncannily like Barbara Steele's in Black Sunday, leaving one to wonder if this film inspired Bava's puncture-wound look. The crux of the tragedy occurs when Magno's curse takes effect, whereby he can play piano gorgeously but not without turning into a hideous, hairy, wolf-like monster. The Man and the Monster is all about the transformation scenes, time-lapsing hair, fangs, and facial crags that are as humorous as they are scary. Made the year after El Vampiro, director Rafael Baledón's film could possibly share castle sets. It relies on the same narrative trope in which an outsider, Ricardo Souto (Abel Salazar, who also played the similar character in El Vampiro), intervenes to solve the mystery and rescue the woman. However, there is always room for more cinema investigating Faustian bargains. --Trinie Dalton

AKA: El Hombre y el Monstruo.
Gothic horror, special effects and an inventive re-thinking of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story converge in The Man and The Monster, one of the most chilling and exciting classics in the annals of Mexico's supernatural thrillers. Enrique Rambal portrays Samuel, a pianist so ambitious that he sells his soul to Satan in exchange for musical greatness. Every time Samuel plays the composition that wins him fame, fortune and adulation, he turns into a hideous beast with a lust for murder.

Nice find for 50's monster/horror fans...........2007-05-21
For the most part, The Man and the Monster, released in the Mexico as "El hombre y el monstruo" is your average 1959 horror flick. It was filmed in the spanish language and then dubbed into english with careful attention paid to matching the dialouge with the actors lips. Unlike most other dubbed efforts, this one is very easy to watch without being distracted by the dubbing.
The film tells the sinister story of a pianist who sells his soul to the devil to become the greatest pianist in the world, with one catch - when he plays, he turns into what appears to be some type of monster/werewolf creature. The makeup effects for the monster are well done and much in alignment with what every other studio was doing at this time.
But what makes this flick really worthwhile is the above average cinematography, atmospheric lighting and the great score. A real nice achievement for the Mexico studio who put this together. makes one wonder what other south of the border classics are out there. It is truly a great looking film with solid acting with an air of creepy fright that is well sustained throughout the entire feature.
While not an all-time classic, Man and the Monster is very much suitable entertainment with much repeat watchability for those who enjoy the 50's sci-fi/horror genre and also for those who enjoy great black and white cinematography punctuated with film noir style lighting.
Check it out...
CasaNegra really takes the cake with Mexican classics..........2007-03-02
The Man and the Monster is actually a really good classic horror film. Visually and stylistically it borrows from the elements of other Mexican horror classics such as The Vampire and Curse of the Crying Woman. Most of these classic Mexican horror films were shot on the same sets however with each film the sets are manipulated and added to, subtracted from to make it look quite different and provide unique levels of atmosphere in each movie. The scenes shot in the Hacienda courtyard where Rambal's monstrous character lives are beautifully composed and deliciously lit. Director Baledon does a great job directing this film. People who have seen this film agree the monster is not terribly "monstrous" and is more funny to look at then scary but for me it does not detract from what a good film it really is. The film as a whole is quite an accomplishment with excellent acting and wonderful direction and photography. The film is pristine and probably even looks better then when people first saw it back in the 50s. The restoration on the DVD is absolutely perfect and on par with previous CasaNegra releases. A key feature of the DVD is a really fantastic Mexican Horror Poster slideshow set to music from the film which I also thought was really great.
