A lot could've gone wrong in Red Dragon, but the movie exceeds expectations. Perfect Installment..........2007-07-03

Reading all the novels, this one back in 1986, I recall being so scared, having to leave my father's apartment, walking to the nearest coffee shop to finish the story. This killer thought about his prey, nothing spontaneous, everything planned to the minute's detail. Harris's tale brought me out of a world of insulated `safety", to the knowledge of evil.

A few years later, came across "Silence of the Lambs" to read the tale in one sitting. The serial killer in this case, a mutant cross dresser gone mad, making dresses from his victims skin. "Buffalo Bill" imprisoned his victims in a deep hole, feeding them just enough to ensure their skin, once at the correct weight, would be added to his "dress" and the body thrown away. Mr. Bill is not sophisticated in his motivations, in fact absolutely mad...but throughout the film...and novel, is Hannibal's relationship with Starling. There is a connection: something more, something absolutely diabolical.

"Hannibal" the novel, hits the world and the story is good but overrated by the critics because it is making so much money.

Dr. Lecter has disappeared from the scene. After travelling to Venice, he attempts to settle himself amongst the beauty of his imagination.

But this is another film.

Red Dragon is well constructed and well planned.

Director Brett Ratner rose to the occasion and gave us a great instalment.

The first time seeing Red Dragon thought it was too plain, didn't like it, the second time, once putting the film in perspective, noticed it followed the novel and now, enjoy the film for its continuity, and presence overall.

Forget Man Hunter! .......2007-05-12

I give this movie four stars, because like all Hannibal Lector movies, the book is better. But if you are not up for reading a book, then the movie is a short and sweet summary. Of course Anthony Hopkins is as slithery as ever, but the rest of the cast is also amazing. Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes are more than qualified to fill these complicated roles. If you have ever seen Man Hunter, erase it from your memory, it will only cause you damage. Red Dragon is a much better version than Man Hunter.

While this movie is not the best of the series it is good. Its near greatness. I would say if you have yet to see the others (get out from under your rock) this would be a great movie. The acting is top notch and the HDDVD transfer is great. So nice.

Nothing new here, this is simply a pale copy of the first movie "The silence of the lambs", there is absolutely nothing new here. The kind of movie we have seen over and over again. Stick with the first movie.

The only film that can be dubbed a "horror film" to win the Oscar for Best Picture, "The Silence of the Lambs" is a film that has and continues to stand the test of time. #65 on The American Film Institute's Top 100, it's also one of the few films on that list to actually make the average film critic's top 100 as well. The film stars Jodie Foster in her 2nd Oscar-winning role as Clarice Starling, a fledgling FBI agent assigned by Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a former psychiatrist doing time in a maximum security facility. There's a serial killer on the loose dubbed Buffalo Bill, who has been kidnapping innocent young women and taking portions of their skin. People often mention that this movie and its book are based on the legendary serial killer Ed Gein. It's not, but that aspect of the story is. As Clarice begins interviewing Lecter, she finds herself drawn further into the case and finds herself forming a sort-of friendship with Dr. Lecter. Now, this is a film that is much like "The Godfather" in the fact that it's been parodied endlessly ("Joe Dirt" and "Family Guy" have recently parodied this film), yet when we actually see the legendary scenes of the film we don't start laughing. Most people who haven't seen this film can still recite the lines "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again." This movie is not just filled with legendary portions of dialogue, but also legendary scenes. Notably, the introduction of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. This scene is simple, yet unforgettable. Clarice is walking down a hallway, to the final cell at the end. When Lecter is revealed, he is merely standing in his cell completely erect waiting for Starling. It's this kind of body language (among other things) that won Anthony Hopkins the Oscar. Few other actors have created characters that have had so much effect on our society (other examples would be Marlon Brando and Al Pacino). Ask someone to identify a line of dialogue from this film and it will either be the line I listed above or "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." This is a film in which Hopkins proved (much like Pacino did in "Dog Day Afternoon" and John Malkovich did in "Of Mice & Men") what a complete actor he is. In a lot of films you watch, you see an actor and think, "there's [insert name here]." When Lecter first appears, my thoughts were "there's Hannibal Lecter." Foster is also effective as Starling, considering she's in damn near every scene of the film. She's also the moral center of the film, as well as the protagonist. Hollywood is nervous about giving a woman the lead role, especially in a role that requires the woman to be both vulnerable and strong-willed at the same time. Foster does both and makes it completely believable. Ted Levine is one of the only actors who could've played Buffalo Bill (the only other actor I can think of that could have pulled off the role is John Malkovich). It's the voice mostly. Much like the line "I coulda been a contender" probably wouldn't have been much had it not been Brando who recited it. "The Silence of the Lambs" is a perfect film, at least of it's genre. The reason it has stood the test of time is for the same reason movies like "Pulp Fiction" and "Casablanca" have. Like those movies, every scene is absolutely necessary for the film to function as a whole. Howard Hawks once defined a great movie as "three great scenes and no bad scenes." "The Silence of the Lambs" has more than three great scenes, several legendary ones, and no bad scenes. After 16 years, more people still see this than they do its sequel and prequel "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon." I'm sure in 16 more years, it will still be seen more than those two films and it's recent 2nd prequel "Hannibal Rising."

Hannibal at his Height.......2007-04-01

The Movie

Nevermind the pop culture boogie man the character became. The only superb film in the series was the first good horror/thriller in decades. It did this not by shedding the humanity of it's characters, but drenching them in it. The streamlined script (relying on exposition by showing memory in action rather than the usual talking head, for example, Clarices memories of her father), the superior direction and inventive cinematography steeped the film in tragedy, doom and suspense. The casting was perfect. All surrounded by institutional squalor and the flipside of the american dream.

The Disc

Finally we get the extras we deserve. I already have the Criterion Edition with it's interesting commentary track and more key players than you can shake a script at...well, all of them actually. Too bad they couldn't have combined the two discs for those who don't have the Criterion. As pissed off as I get about the heinous act of Double Dipping, this was one I couldn't pass up, and the extras made it well worth it for me.

Yet another Repackaging of a classic.......2007-03-18

I have an almost pathological devotion to this Film. Like Cassablaca it is that rare meeting of the right director with the right cast at the proper place in time. It is a tribute to this film that all the sequels and prequels have done well inspite of a less then spectacular treatment of the authors writen word. (Don't get me started on the ending of the Movie "Hannibal"!
I own the original DVD of SOL and the Criterian editon and because of the added extras listed on the sales page I decided to purchase this two disk package. I have to say I enjoyed the new Two Disk package very much but can not really say if it is worth the purchase if you are like me and own any of the earlier multi feature packages.
The feature on the making of the film that show the building of the feature and it's inpact durring it's initial release was very interesting. It shows how unique a film it was and how it's very disturbing story caused such a stur even at Oscar time. I had almost forgoten that.
There is a very interesting "From Page to Screen" piece that I always find enjoyable. These featurettes are always literate and well constructed.
One aspect of the this set I truly loved was the Anthony Hopkins phone message in Character you can transfer to your message machine. I was so there for that. ( I need Help. HeHe)
As far as the transfer quality it is a fine letterbox quality rendering and It is almost theatre like if you have a Hi-Def televison and I urge all who have the Dash for such a purchase to make it. It takes the viewing experiance to the next level.
In the end It is a very good package and I do not feel I was swindled by making the choice of buying it. I don't think alot of new ground was covered from the other special additons but the small diffeances were enough for me.

Silence of the Lambs is an intense psychological thriller. Anthony Hopkins is truly creepy and believable and Hannibal the cannibal. Jodie Foster is great as the rookie FBI agent given a case that required her to learn fast and think faster. I like this movie very much.

Disturbing and Paranoiac Film.......2007-02-07

This is a mesmerizing tale of the most heinous of nightmares come true as FBI agent Clarice (Jodie Foster) is immersed into an abyss of the darkest side of deviant human behavior where the flesh eating Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) agrees to assist her in her investigation to capture a serial killer who commits unspeakable atrocities on his victims. Jodie Foster must traverse into a world of dark sickening debauchery to capture the killer. The story takes several turns heightening the intensity and unspeakable terror of her assignment. The story is unsettling in its own right but the film seen from Foster's perspective has a pervasive feel of paranoia as if she has not been given all the information she needs or even further to suggest she is actually being set up as bait. One scene in particular comes to mind when sitting in the back seat of the car her boss (Scott Glenn) speaks cryptically to her and she just gazes at the back of his head once he turns around. You really don't know what either character is thinking. Very disturbing.

In this pulse-pounding adaptation of Thomas J. Harris's novel, FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) ventures into a maximum-security asylum to pick the diseased brain of Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a psychiatrist turned homicidal cannibal. Starling needs clues to help her capture a serial killer; unfortunately, her Faustian relationship with Lecter soon leads to his escape. This movie is brilliant, great and deserves every compliment it recieves. It is incredibly scary and does not pull any cheap scares. Hannibal Lector is the most terrifying movie character of all time because he is not only a cannibal and ruthless killer, but he is also a brilliant man. He is capable of getting underneath someone's skin, no pun intended. Jodie Foster is incredible in this movie as she is in countless others. This movie is so scary and does not dissapoint at the end.Serial killer Buffalo Bill ( played by Ted levine) is another incredibly creepy character and is arguably scarier than Lector. To get the full impact of this movie watch it with the lights outto his escape ... and now, two deranged killers are on the loose.

One of the Greatest Horror Films of All Time.......2007-01-01

The Silence of the Lambs is a brilliant work of art. It is one of only three films to ever win all five major Academy Awards, and is definately deserving of this honour. It is extremely suspenseful and superbly acted. Criterion has put together an excellent DVD for the film that contains numerous fascinating special features. Amongst these is a commentary by Jonathan Demme, stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally, and FBI agent John Douglas, and is one of the best I have ever heard. The DVD does not contain region coding so it should operate on any DVD player in the world. This DVD should definately be in every collection. The Silence of the Lambs - The Criterion Collection is now out of print, and is no longer available from retailers. If you are searching for a brand new copy on the internet, as a guide, US $60.00 is a good price to aim for.

Description

Don't know why, but I come back to this film whenever I want a genuine laugh. It has all the elements here. Mistaken identity, goofy CIA agents, paranoid friend, sexy starlets. It's just a good comedy. Tom Hanks was just getting full recognition when this one came along. Nice to look back at his quirky comedies.

This is the second remake of the original French version from around 1970. This one is the worst of the three. The gags remind me of the Three Stooges movies. They are overdone and drawn out to pad the movie to 90 minutes.

Kiefer Sutherland's credible acting as Roy, rich, successful businessman is the reason you should see this little-known film. For his next project Roy, acid-tongued perfectionist, hires a photographer Natalie (Kyra Sedgwick), who happens to be his long estranged sister. We soon realize that Roy actually called in his sister for another reason - he knows he is sick.

"Behind the Red Door" tells the story of their reconciliation as well as their traumatic childhood in the film's black-and-white flashback sequences. Stockard Channing also appears as Natalie's agent, but the time and role allotted to her is too short and small.

Kiefer Sutherland superbly deals with the vulnerable side of cynical Roy, who must accept the inevitable facts. Kyra Sedgwick is also very good as his sister, who cannot leave her annoying brother even after displaying her animosities right in front of him. Each scene including both actors has a ring of truth, something that many people would find in their personal experiences.

However, I for one found the flashbacks about the murder of their mother unnecessary. The saddest event that must have affected the lives of the children needs more detailed descriptions, but the back story about the death of their mother remains too vague to convince us of the impact upon Roy and Natalie, whose memories, it is suggested still haunt her present life.

The dramatic power of "Behind the Red Door" comes largely from the talented stars whose effective acting makes the otherwise ordinary film's scenes very memorable.

This movie absolutely took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting much as I have seen some of Kiefer Sutherland's earlier movies and wasn't impressed at all by the story content or his acting. With that said.... I have to say I was absolutely stunned at the power of his portrayal of Roy Hadad. I found myself forgetting that it was Kiefer playing a role, but instead found myself empathizing with Roy and taking great joy in the relationship he was beginning to re-form with his sister Natalie on an adult level. I could truly feel Roy's vulnerabilities and fears through Kiefer's interpretation of him. I also am not ashamed to admit that I rented this movie multiple times before I bought it. The only thing that mars the beauty of this story is the use of a very strong curse word used multiple times by different actors. I wish it wasn't there and it really serves no purpose being there. It truly detracts from the pure beauty of the film. The serenity of the ocean coupled with Kiefer's very subtle facial expressions and movements when he makes his decision on the deck and when he tells Natalie of this decision (I won't ruin it for those who have not seen it) overwhelmed me. I truly felt the power of his conviction and the sense of purpose Roy must have felt at that time, and this was once again all due to Kiefer's portrayal of Roy. Kiefer also portrays Roy's lifestyle in a way that is understated so that this is not the focus of the film but keeps the focus on the relationships and Roy finding for himself peace with God and others. This movie is pure genius on the part of Kiefer Sutherland and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a movie with depth. I look forward to more truly amazing performances by Kiefer Sutherland in the future. Kiefer, if you're out there let me say that no actor has ever moved me the way you did in this movie. Thank you for the experience.

Best portrayal of sibblings' healing after childhood abuse.......2006-01-27

Á must see movie for people with substanance. Emotional healing is a long and painful process. Roy painting the front door of his house a bright red colour is just one of the visual healing processes. The nature scenery is so beautiful I wish I could see, feel and hear the surroundings of the house and the house itself. Both actors delivered brilliant performances, and I don't understand why the movie and the actors didn't receive an Oscar or Golden Globe!

Kiefer At His Best!!!.......2005-05-29

I rented this film before I bought it. I must say that this is Kiefer's absolutate "best" performance. I rented it for 3 straight weeks and then bought it. I watch it over and over again. The story was so sensitively told and the cast was absolutely perfect!!!! Kiefer of course was the solid anchor and Kyra brought in the rear w/her solid portrayal. I loved the actress who played Michelle as well, she was a delight. I also particularly took notice of the actress who played the young Natalie. I am expecting more from this young lady and look forward to seeing her in future projects.

But, back to the story. My heart was touched and I found that "I" wanted to go help Roy myself. That's just how profound Kiefer's portrayal is!!!! It seemed like I was watching my own loved on going through this situation. Though I have enjoyed everything I've seen Kiefer do, this is, again, his absolute "best" work. And now with his success on 24, there's no stopping him now!!!!

I highly recommend this film. You will see a most sensitive story told in the absolute finest form, superb peformances and you will experience Kiefer "at his best!!!"

You go Kiefer!!!! May God continue to bless you!!!!
