While fans breathlessly await the fate of the computer-animated New Adventures of Spider-Man (it remains in limbo after being dropped by MTV in 2003), they can enjoy three episodes of its first season on this disc (culled from the 13-episode two-disc set, which is a better choice for completists). Mainframe Entertainment (which created the cult Saturday morning series ReBoot) and writer/executive producer Brian Michael Bendis (the Ultimate Spider-Man comic) give the venerable story a spin by placing Peter Parker (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris) in college alongside pal Harry Osborn (Ian Ziering) and longtime crush Mary Jane Watson (singer Lisa Loeb). As usual, Parker/Spidey must conceal his secret identity while wrangling a host of foes, which are a mix of ones drawn from the comic book and brand new enemies. Spider-Man fans seem firmly divided into "for" and "against" camps over the animation, which beautifully captures Spidey's web-slinging, but often looks awkward when depicting everyday movement. --Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Awkwardly not for kids........2007-06-24

It would be nice if this was labeled that it is intended for adults. I was dissapointed that I could not watch this with my kids. The swearing seems out of place...almost as if it was forced. The animation is dated, but I think still good for a T.V. show.

1 out of 5 stars Not for young children.......2007-06-14

My husband loves it, but it wouldn't be appropriate for young children due to language mostly.

5 out of 5 stars My Grandson is thrilled.......2007-06-02

I watch this movie, with my grandson, and its better than the old ones that first came out,
when SpiderMan was created.

4 out of 5 stars In response of the "1 Star-Mother reviews".......2006-07-12

What parents need to realize is you can't just buy something for your children with no research at all. Just because something says "Spiderman" on it, doesn't mean it has to be for little kids. Just because something is animated doesn't mean it's for kids. Spiderman and many other characters were made a long time ago, and people that liked it then are older now. We would like to be able to enjoy OUR characters as well as share with kids new to them, but there is often a separation at some point where some things are made for newer viewers and children, and some to the mature audience that have become fans.

Wake up and realize animation can be for adults. It's not a toy, it's an art form. Maybe you should care a little more about your kids to take a minute to research stuff you get them instead of just grabbing something to get them off your back for 20 minutes.

Have a nice day.

1 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate for Children!.......2006-03-11

I agree with Jane! I bought this video for my four year old son because he's a Spider-man fanatic. Little did I know that this series is not meant for children. When we started to watch with him, I couldn't believe what I was hearing so I flipped the box over to find the rating (never dreaming there was one since I bought this in a toy store right next to a stack of Teletubbie videos!) There is a PGV rating on the back for violence but they don't tell you about the adult language as well as the sexual references. Needless to say we shut it off and tried to distract him with a more appropriate video for his age. I don't know if I'd let my 16 year old watch this!

4 out of 5 stars To thine own taste, be true!.......2005-11-23

To say that High Voltage is either a good or a bad movie would be too much of a generalization. In fact, one must understand the lengths that American production companies have gone through to imitate Asian action cinema. Many have failed, to say the least, but only so few have managed to succeed since the heydays of the No Retreat No Surrender trilogy-namely Steve Wang (Drive), and the director of High Voltage, Isaac Florentine.

Florentine's filmmaking style sets itself apart from the rest with the use of fantasy-based conceptual storytelling, with the help of some of the best action choreography and coordination ever seen on screen. But as usual, his films do not stand without some level of mediocrity of its own, since a lot of what brings a good action film to life depends not only on the know-how, but also a good budget that helps bring more to the table for a filmmaker to make a movie look good on screen. Such is the case of High Voltage.

Despite its low budget, the movie has a lot of really nice production qualities, as well as some good acting done by Antonio Sabato Jr., Antonio Sabato Sr., George Kee Cheung, James Lew, Amy Smart, Shannon Lee, and William Zabka. The gun battles are spectacular as well as the fight sequences, thanks to Koichi Sakamoto and the Alpha Stunt team, who have brought a much needed upgrade to the American standard of martial arts entertainment.

Personally, I give this film a lot of credit because I like it, and we need more films like this in the American circuit. Isaac Florentine brings as much style and substance to his films as he can with a limited budget, and succeeds for the most part.

Being an action film junkie all my life, I have come to the conclusion that the only reason why I "liked" the shtick featuring Billy Blanks, Gary Daniels, Olivier Gruner, Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton (Post HK film career), Jalal Merhi, and Don "The Dragon" Wilson, was because it was all I ever had thrown in my face for almost 10 years. American cinema has a chance to redeem itself, and nonetheless continues to waste its efforts on films like Pit Fighter (don't cast Scott Adkins if you're not going to use him) and Lessons For An Assassin (Koichi and Shannon should be ashamed for that one).

All I have to say is this: Undisputed 2 will be out in '06. In the meantime, take a look at High Voltage and pacify yourself for awhile. It'll be worth it!

I am a fan of Antonio's but I will speak frankly - this movie was cheesy. It was okay. It is always a thrill to see that hunk -- and an extra thrill to see his father (Good Lord! He is more built than his son! WOW!)-- but the movie was not very good. Sorry-- it's really only for hard core Antonio fans. What's with the marriage scene! That was lame! But overall it is okay.

4 out of 5 stars Good action picture with a believable plot........1999-10-26

Antonio Sabato Jr. and Shannon Lee do a good and believable job of portraying bad guys being chased by the Vietamese mafia. The surprise appearance by the other Mr. Sabato was a nice touch. Both the leads do well enough with the brawling sequences that no standins were used for many scenes. This lets the camera show the characters faces and bodies while fighting and the crew of this film did a good job with this. This is the first time I saw Bruce Lee's daughter play a significant role in a movie, and I must say I was impressed. Her acting showed good emotional content and her action sequences were well done. She plays a character who works for the mafia but ends up helping Antonio's character out. The body language between her and Sabato was good. I was disappointed that there was not more martial arts type action since I had seen Ms. Lee on Martial Law doing some impressive kicking and tai chi. Maybe her next movie will show off her martial arts talents more. Martial arts action pictures could certainly use a new female lead who can act as well as kick the bad guys. If you like a good action picture with gangsters, a handsome hero, and a beautiful heroine as well as an interesting plot then this movie is for you. Bruce Lee fans may also find it interesting because it is one of Shannon Lee's first appearances, but I expect we will see more of her in the future.

5 out of 5 stars great anime.......2006-08-01

this movie satisfies one of the two reasons why I like anime, robots and super powered people.Obviouly It satisfies the super powered people condition and it is great.

5 out of 5 stars Jiggly Girls but kick butt movie.......2005-10-09

This movie is action packed, it also has hot girls who kick butt! This is not your typical movie, this is a martial arts movie which makes you stare in awe, the girls in it are busty but they are so hot that it doesnt matter what they look like. I recommend to rent this movie but then again buy it to catch it over again!

3 out of 5 stars Quite...Jiggly.......2005-08-31

This is the kind of a spin off of Fatal Fury. Here, we have a pig corporation, weird loves between family members, and generous jiggilation from the babies. Now, I know this isn't a very good title, but its fun to watch when you get the chance. The animation is good, the story is ok, and the fighting scenes are radical. Overall, this is a title to see, but probabely not to own.

3 out of 5 stars Movie and OAV differences.......2005-05-02

There are two versions of this anime. I decided to write this review to help those who may be confused or have questions about them. First, I'll briefly summarize the basic plot of this anime for those who are interested.

First of all, it is based off of a fighting game (from NeoGeo I think). It takes place in the year 2010, in a place called Tron City. In this city, there is a school for special students called the Belnar Institute. Isato Kaiza, the hero of the story, is a student at this school. He also possesses a stone called a Caizer stone which transforms him into a super human fighter named Gowcaizer. The story begins as a new student named Kyosuke Shigure arrives at the school seeking revenge against its president, a mysterious man named Ozaki, who seems to be bent on destroying the world. So it's up to Gowcaizer, Kyosuke, and their allies to stop him.

The OAV version:
It is the exact same story as the movie with the exact same animation, dialogue, etc. However, it has a few scenes that are cut out in the movie version. It's a shame that these scenes were cut too because they acutally provide a little more insight into the characters. They also make the plot, which is very confusing, just a bit clearer. There's also a very cool scene in the openning of the first OAV volume where Gowcaizer trashes a couple of robots that is not in the movie version.

This DVD does NOT have the OAV version. As far as I know, the OAVs are only available on two VHS volumes (called Round 1 and Round 2)

The Movie version:
This is what's on this DVD. As I mentioned, it lacks a few scenes from the OAV, but it does have one brief scene that is not in the OAV where a new character is shown, but it seemed pretty unneccesary to me. If anything it just made things more confusing. The movie version also opens with a cool "music video" where pics and clips from the movie are shown while the catchy theme song plays.

The extra features on this DVD include the trailer, a Japanese promo of the anime, another music video (same song, different pictures) and a picture gallery.

So which version is better? Well, I purchased both, but if I had to pick just one it'd be the OAVs because of all the scenes that the movie leaves out. The main reasons I got the DVD were for the extras, the sound is better, and I do like the opener, but that's about it.

My personal thoughts on this anime: What really makes it worth watching are the fight scenes and the fanservice from the sexy girls. Most of the characters have pretty cool personalities too. As I said, the plot is very confusing. Many things seem to be half-explained or not explained at all, leaving you full of questions at the end (hence the 3 star rating). However, it is based off of a video game, so perhaps some things can be answered from that. Unfortunately, I've never played it. So bascially, if you like super-human fighting and male oriented (mostly) FS, I say it's still worth checking out. I hope I've cleared things up for you.

4 out of 5 stars It's pronounced Go-kye-Zer........2004-03-02

This review is for the newly released DVD of Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer: The Movie, NOT the old out of print DVD of the 3 volume OVA. I have not seen the OVA version, so I cannot explain any of the differences between the two. If anyone could write a review stating the differences that would rule.

If you've seen Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, you know what to expect here. In fact Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer is based off another lesser known Neo Geo fighitng game of the same name. The movie starts off a bit slow and confusing, but it kicks into high gear once the the first fight begins, and from then on it's just a truly great anime. Lots of fighting, great animation, and tons of fan service (with a HUGE abundance of bounce). Unlike another reviewer though I won't say this is better than Fatal Fury. I really like this movie, but FF is truly a classic. I will say that VFG is 10000x better than the Battle Arena Toshinden anime though.

Both English and Japanese languages are available, and while SOME of the subtitles are different than the dub, it's not much of a difference and I think the sub is just mostly a script of the dub. This was originally made back in the mid 90s when dubbing wasn't usually as good as it is these days, but I've definetly heard worse.

The DVD also has a few extras like a trailer for VFG, a japanese music video, a japanese promo for the OVA version of VFG (totally useless extra, don't even bother watching it), and of course previews for other animes. The picture and audio quality were also top-notch. No complaints at all about the DVD quality, and I hear the old DVD of the OVA was much worse.

I'm very glad they put this out on DVD finally and really advise anyone who is into this stuff to pick it up. If you liked Fatal Fury at all you have to have this, and if you like anime in general you should also consider checking this one out.
