The title says it all: Tupac Shakur was as much angel as outlaw. Unlike some of the other profiles made in the wake of his passing, Thug Angel doesn't focus only on the first few days of his career or the last few days before his death, but on his entire life. That makes it valuable as much for the fan as for the merely curious. The production was backed by friends and associates and includes never-before-seen material. It's surprisingly evenhanded, juxtaposing footage of Tupac at 17, for example--sounding mature beyond his years--with an interview conducted years later on a shooting range. Passion was still in full effect, but idealism had been replaced by paranoia. Peter Spirer's film is a documentary, not a music video, and contains only snippets of Tupac's work. At its best, Thug Angel makes a compelling case for his continued relevance as an artist and activist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Directed by Academy Award nominee Peter Spirer (Rhyme and Reason), Thug Angel takes you beyond the drama of Tupac's notoriety in the press through all-new interviews with friends, collaborators and scholars as they look back on Tupac and define his legacy today. 92 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars "This ain't no democracy.".......2004-12-19

The documentary "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" takes a deconstructionist approach to analyzing the Rap superstar. Was Tupac a thug whose life ended in an uncanny replication of his lyrics, or was Tupac Shakur, a revolutionary with anarchistic beliefs? With these two diametrically opposed images, the filmmaker deconstructs Tupac's life while exploring both possibilities. As a result, this thought-provoking documentary offers a great deal of insight into a life that so often hit the front page.

Tupac, named after a Bolivian revolutionary, was born into a troubled family--his mother was a Black Panther, and other relatives served jail time. One relative even received political asylum from Cuba. By the time Tupac was a teenager, he was no stranger to poverty, and frequent moves across country finally left him living in Marin County. The film includes an interview with a 17-year old Tupac, and it's clear from the statements he makes that he's intelligent, idealistic, respectful towards women and very socially conscious. It is difficult to align these early statements of Tupac with some of the film's later interviews. Within a few years, now famous, Tupac's world view is much harder. There's one scene of him toting a weapon in a shooting range, and one senses he is preparing for the big showdown he is sure is in his future. It is at this point that Tupac makes several anarchistic statements: "The police ain't nothing but a gang. The National Guard ain't nothing but a gang. The army ain't nothing but a gang." But it's also quite clear from the documentary's investigation of Tupac's past why he felt this way. Tupac noted that even Dan Quayle took the time at the Republican Convention to lob a verbal attack against the rapper, and as his acquaintances realised, Tupac interpreted this attention to be devastatingly significant.

The documentary includes many interviews with those who knew Tupac best--relatives, former manager Leila Steinberg, Quincy Jones, and fellow rappers. The film touches on Tupac's Death Row Records contract, and the feud with Biggie. He is described by those who loved him as "the hardest working man in hip hop." "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" is a fascinating account of the rapper's brief and brilliant life, and as an attempt to unravel the mystery of Tupac's two sides, I think the film succeeds quite well. The DVD also contains a booklet that highlights key points in Tupac's personal life and his career--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars 2Pac the Prophet, The Father, and the Spirit of Hip-Hop.......2004-12-05

As to say this, I can't get my eyes on Tupac. 'Cuz he had a lot going on in his life, you know what I'm mean. You see Tupac will be telling a lot of stories of his past when he begin writing poetry at a early age, learn to act, and how to be a superstar in the rap business. Yeah Tupac been gone for 7 or 8 years now, but in 10 years he'll be remember 'cuz he modered a generation for the hip-hop community. I also a lot of people from that culture to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, RFK, and on and on.

Now a lot of people are still talking about him and how he became a part of our culture. That's why he lived his life the way he live b/c of the fight with Biggie, the East Coast/West Coast rap war, how he got arrested, been in jail all of his life, need I say more?

Nobody even care on how he lived or how he died. He help changed that by putting it into his lyrics. The reason why I love him the most is there's nobody like him like Jada Pinkett Smith "There's nobody, nobody like that man. I don't care how many records you sell. I don't care how popular you are..."
You know Tupac lives on and he'll always will be to the fullest.

For those of ya'll are missing out a lot of good information about this icon, I urge you to check him out. He's one of the greats that put it on since Martin Luther King and Malcolm X we learned back in the day.

Description

Despite being a normal student, Kamiyama finds himself in the most delinquent high school in Tokyo. He soon becomes the leader of the thugs and morons that populate the school and tries to improve the school, Loaded with sketches, in-jokes, parodies and run-ins with all sorts of tough types who eventually are defeated through the sheer laziness and weirdness of the students. CROMARTIE HIGH began as a successful absurdist manga by Eiji Nonaka and then a 26-episode anime from Production I.G (Otogi Zoshi, Kill Bill).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!.......2007-01-11

This movie is hilarious. I watched it without having read the manga or seeing the anime first, and I ended up laughing a lot. Cromartie High in any format is just incredibly funny, and this movie lives up to the manga extremely well. I don't know what kind of humor you'd classify it as, but it's great.

To put it shortly, the main characters, Kamiyama, transfers into Cromartie High to be with his friend (Tak Sakaguchi), who fails the entrance exam. Kamiyama is left alone to deal with this crazy school which is filled with some of the worst teenage thugs in Japan. But not only does it have thugs, it has a gorilla, a robot who doesn't know he's a robot, and a shirtless guy named "Freddie" who walks around wearing leather pants and sometimes rides a horse. The movie does have a sort of semi-continuous story, but it's also got a lot of elements from the manga, such as Takenuchi's motion-sickness adventure.

If you're a fan of Cromartie High, you must have this. If you're not, you should give it a try anyway.

1 out of 5 stars Did not Like.......2007-06-27

I am an ETERNAL Tupac fan and this video is about 85% interviews with people who KNEW him and 15% Pac! I would have rathered it be the other way around.

1 out of 5 stars pointless.......2005-05-07

imagine that you make it real big and die. THEN they go back to an old neighborhood you lived in and do interviews. that's all this is. people talking about pac. it was whack in my opinion cause for one a LOT of haters came out of nowhere talking mad noise about him. the thing is they were all rappers at one time so it came off to me as them being mad they were still in the same spot. one dude even said pac deserved to be shot. you want a real documentary then i recommend thug angel or Resurrection.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Get Mugged by Thug Life.......2005-03-06

This video is a collection of interviews with minor characters in Tupac's life. Tupac never shows up in it! What they had to say about the performer could have been condensed into a 10 minute production--if that. Your money is much better spent buying the Tupac Resurrection video, which is really very good and actually has Tupac giving the interviews.

1 out of 5 stars Trust me, This Video/DVD sucks. .......2005-03-03

Im a huge 2Pac fan, and Im here to tell ya' dont waste your money on this video/DVD. Its basically just no-thrills video footage of some old friends of Pacs from Baltimore, hanging around their neighborhood talking about Pac, some of their memories are funny and its amusing watching them clown around telling their stories, but most of it is entirely forgettable. Theres a few home made video segments that Pac and his boys took of each other back in the day, but nothing too great. If youre a crazy Pac fan that must own everything with his name attached to it, then go ahead and buy this Video/DVD. But, if youre just a big fan of Pacs who wants to pick up a video/DVD about him, I recommend the Tupac Movie documentary "Tupac/Resurrection" which is really a must own for any real 2Pac fan. Also although not all about just Tupac himself "welcome to Death Row" is interesting to watch, but do yourself a favor and save your money rather then spend it on this video/DVD. Trust me people, this video/DVD sucks, dont believe any of the reviews that said it was great or whatever. Pac himself would be the first to blast on this video/DVD saying that its garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Must-Own.......2004-12-05

This is one of my favorites I picked at Wal-Mart. 'cuz it's the 1st documentary I ever picked and own by my man 2Pac who is an inspiration to me. I luv him the way since he started off as a rapper, a activist, and then an actor. I actually seen Welcome to Death Row, Tupac Shakur-Thug Angel:The Life of an Outlaw, Tupac:Resurrection (which I haven't seen but look forward of getting it into my collection), I mean there are a lot more documentaries I seen asides this one. Tupac will always live on in my heart and soul. Rest in peace, baby your spirit and your music lives on.

Si alguna vez lees esto Edgar, tu amigo Marco A. del colegio en Ecuador te pide que hagas algo mas fidedigno, no he visto la pelicula pero las criticas lo dicen mucho.

Maybe next time you'll have your own revenge with yourself buddy, poor try, but I repeat again, next time bro just for this cause.

1 out of 5 stars horrible movie!!!!!.......2005-08-06

I like to first start off that I'm Latino and love Latino cinema and movies about Latino urban life such as Blood in, Blood out. I enjoy many movies and a very easy critic. This movie is horrible. Very low budget. I think the film crew had about 2 cameras. I took two years of film making in high school and if I had there equipment, with thier so-so actors, I can make a better movie than this. There's one scene were the two guys and two girls are talking and all the camera man does is rotate around them!!! No close ups, MDs, no mixing anything up. This combined with lame dialog, and sterotypical Californian Mexican acting. The director and producer have Latino last names and they potrayed our people really bad. And what's up with the title??? Just by reading the title "Hood Rats" and looking at the cover I thought it was about Latina gang-bangers or bust downs in the hood. None what so ever!!! LAME!

1 out of 5 stars Hood Rats.......2005-04-30

Zero Stars!!! The Director & Studio Exec who made this movie should be shot. This movie is the absolute worst movie I ever saw. This movie is a disgrace to the Hispanic Race. Even Gang Bangers should be ashamed!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars horrible excuse for a movie.......2005-01-16

hoodrats is about these two guys who constantly get in trouble with the law. a figure named jimmy, whom i don't believe that they specified how he was related to these guys, has a "package" that he is delivering to the two young men, who have no clue as to what is inside, or so they say. the police find them on the street and question them about this package. they deny knowing anything about it and get a little abused by the police. after they are let out they find two young women, whom came off to me as prostitutes, and pick them up. as things are getting steamy in the boys' house, two ex-cons break in, armed with guns and knives, for this "package." they deny knowing anything about it and the scene goes on for nearly a half hour with the men threatening to rape one of the women and pointing their guns at the boys. somehow they manage to get away and kill the two ex-cons and dump them off on the highway. the movie ends with the two boys on the same street as the beginning, and jimmy comes up to them to tell them that he dropped off the package at the wrong adress. then three girls(the ones on the cover) pass by them and the movie ends. i have seen many movies, good and bad, but this had to be the worst movie i have ever seen. the camera wasn't very steady, as when the angle is from one of the criminals' view as it is moving back and forth among the people in the room it is very shaky and not done right. also the movie had almost no point, and made hardly any sense whatsoever. i found myself falling asleep throughout the movie but stayed awake to see the pathetic ending. also the three ladies on the cover are not seen in the movie until the end, where they only walk by and aren't even in any closeups. i rented this movie because it seemed like the teen movie thirteen, but was nothing of the sort. i recommend you stay away from this movie; the $5 rental isn't worth it.

Set in 1989, just as Soviet domination over Eastern Europe was ending, this searing drama tells the story of Marek, who is beaten by two policemen and left to die in the city dump. Brain surgery saves the young man's life but also results in total amnesia. Marek wanders the streets, seeking both shelter and answers to his questions. He finds refuge with an eccentric girlfriend/bagwoman and regains his memory. Meanwhile, his assailants pursue him, fearing he will testify against them.

With the collapse of Communism in Poland, the people who formally had power now fear others finding their dirty deeds. "Dismissed From Life" is about a group of former intelligence agents who want to silence a man who they fear will cause them trouble. They beat him to death and leave him in the trash yard, where he miraculously lives, but with amnesia.

The tension brews as he tries to survive and outwit the group that attacked him. He befriends an exocentric older woman who, at first, probably did not realize what she got herself into by helping him. I found the drama and suspense blend into a thriller, building tension and captivating the viewer. Quite easily, the strength of "Dismissed From Life" is that it has enough suspense and mystery to keep you wondering and glued to the screen. It is a serious film likely to be appreciated by all that love dramas.

      4 out of 5 stars Ummmm.......2003-12-12

The lead character is a straight negro. Notice i said negro. The story line is good. It's real! As far as the martial-arts experience? It's ideal. Though, none of these actors real seem to know martial arts. I do remember the days of the panther, where martial arts was part of the law. I mean you had to know how to defend yourself back then. This movie is a reminder of that. Though, it's not quite real enough it's still an ideal scenario. This would be a movie where grown ups have that child "Conquer and destroy" Mentality. Like "This is our clubhouse! Who goes there?" type ish (Ninja Turtles). So, it's cool in a way. I believe the kung fu master type action should be deaded and more official. As far as black folks? We just go for what we know. In the streets it ain't much. Um, maybe a crow-bar, a rock, a rusty screw-driver, umm some scrap metal........ Kung fu? how many of us can afforded? How many actually believe they need it? Mama got kitchen knives, Pops got a gun, big bro plays baseball. So their you have it. A good ideal movie with a lil extra activity that might take you from the concept. Though, it was fun to watch, and it makes me think...hmmmm what if black culture had more involved like Martial Art. But if you can look past the little martial arts slow motion fighting and the unexperience artists. You could really enjoy this flick heartful. Big ups to the team and cast that put this together cause it ain't too far off from the black origin. Always keep it real. Though this movie is straight entertainment. It's also one of my favorite underground indie films from black-america. Great Music! I imagine this movie redone with just "Go for what you know fighting (on the real). It's Gangsta! Big Ups!

Two friends from the Hood who seem to be martial arts experts. who are into all the bad things the Hood has to offer. I thought martial arts was to supossed to keep you out of trouble!

Big Ups!

Fennessy
