Description
These adventures were the first time that Superman (and his alter ego Clark Kent), Lois Lane and Perry White had been seen in animated form since they were immortalized in the iconic Superman short films of the 1940s. In addition, this series marked the animation debut of Jimmy Olsen and classic Superman villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac. This animated Superman was forerunner show that lead to all the subsequent animated superhero programming.

Pure Superman.......2007-06-28
This is a totally retro superman cartoon. It's not as well animated as the theatrical Flesher cartoons. Also the plots are a bit outlandish (ie aliens and wizards). But it is fun to watch.
Finally, The Best Has Been Released!!.......2007-06-24
It's about time they released these classic cartoons. The current cartoons are worthless. The New Adventures of Superman was my favorite growing up. The simple plots along with the music made these the classics that they are. I'm sure they will release the remaining episodes as well as Superboy,Aquaman, and the Justice League. I taped these cartoons off of Boomerang a few years ago. They were ok except for the commercials and the fact small portions were omitted from the shows. I also bought the Super Powers VHS from Amazon. Release all of these fine shows from the vault--they have been collecting dust long enough!!!
Filmation's New Adventures of Superman - Season One!.......2007-05-03
"Superman! Rocketed to Earth as an infant when the distant planet Krypton exploded. And who disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet fights a neverending battle for truth, justice and freedom with super-powers far beyond those of ordinary mortals!"
That's how announcer Jackson Beck opened this classic show from 1966. The opening scene showing Superman smashing meteorites to the show's very '60s jazz main title theme still looks cool.
Following the '40s Fleischer Superman (made for theaters) and the '50s Adventures of Superman (first done as a movie then a TV series), Filmation's New Adventures of Superman (1966) was the first Superman done specifically for television. Paid a sum of $36,000 per completed half-hour by CBS (who struck a deal with DC Comics to create the show), Superman also was the then-little studio's first major TV deal.
The legacy of the more revered Fleischer Superman shorts was not lost on Filmation. "The Fleischers did, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive one. So much so that we actually managed to hire some of them to work for us," producer Lou Scheimer said.
In additon to comics faithful character designs, and effective yet limited [compared to today] animation, The New Adventures of Superman also featured the voices of Fleischer Superman's Bud Collyer and Joan Alexander (alternating with Julie Bennett) as the animated Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
As a result, the series was a breakout hit. So much so Filmation was given a bonus and a 2nd season where the show expanded to "The Superman Aquaman Hour of Adventure" adding heroes Green Lantern, Hawkman, Flash, the Atom, Teen Titans, and Justice League to the lineup.
Due to the ongoing Siegel/DC/Time Warner battle for Superboy copyrights, the Superboy episodes originally sandwiched between the Superman episodes are not included in this set. Despite this, I still recommend the set solely on the strength of the thirty-six 6 min. Superman eps that are included.
The New Adventures of Superman is a 2-disc set featuring all 36 Superman episodes from the show's first season; Full Frame (1.33:1) video; Dolby Surround Stereo English audio; Closed caption; plus the following Special Feature: "Superman in '66" - Featurette explores how the '60s era influenced the character of Superman and led to his Filmation debut on this groundbreaking show.

More Great Superman Animation.......2007-04-08
I loved these as a kid and can't wait to revist these adventures!
This will be a great addition to an animated collection to join the ranks of the Cartoons from the 40's and the great series from the 90's! I know they've had to take out the Superboy cartoons that originally ran with it (probably due to conflicts WB currently has over the rights to the 'Superboy' name) but regardless this will be great to for years to come!
New Adventures of Superman.......2007-04-03
The plans for New Adventures of Superman disappoint me a lot. The Superboy cartoons from the original show have been left out altogether, according to the latest online news I've read.
As well as that, they'll only include the 36 Superman cartoons from the first 18 episodes (ie first season) of New Adventures of Superman.
Another 8 episodes (with 16 Superman cartoons and 8 Superboy cartoons) were produced in 1967 for the Superman Aquaman Hour of Adventure. (I'd hoped for years to see all of that released in full).
A further 8 two-part Superman stories and 8 more accompanying Superboy stories were produced for the Batman Superman Hour in 1968. (I'd like very much to see all that released in full, making the following complete: Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Superboy, and Aquaman's guest star spots of Justice League, Teen Titans, Atom, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Flash).
The Shazam live action series is another long awaited DC character I'd love to see released in full.
I'd also like to see the other seasons of Superfriends & Super Powers Team too. We got two sets two years ago, which I enjoyed a lot, leaving me keen to see the many other incarnations of the show:
Superfriends (1973 one hour stories)
All-New Superfriends Hour (1976; four stories with Wondertwins, guest stars, whole team, team-ups)
World's Greatest Superfriends (1980)
Superfriends (1981-83 six min shorts; 3 per show; 3 seasons)
Superfriends: Legendary Super Powers Show (1984)
Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985)

Superman: The Animated Series, Volume Three, would sadly be the final run of this great animated series before getting cancelled. In this season the show was beginning to take on a daring new direction, which some might say was more grim (like the episode "Unity") and a bit darker than past Superman incarnations. The stories were also becoming more challenging and interesting, ending with Superman and Lois Lane locking lips. But the change to the formula was definitely an asset to the series giving Superman yet another modern facelift. The most notable change was the addition of the super villains from Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Since Superman was such a "superhero" it was really tough to find villains to fight him on an equal playing field. Kirby's Darkseid and Planet of the Apokolips characters provided some cool villains that could compete with Superman punch for punch, adding a mysterious, dark element to the Superman mythos. These characters make up some of the best episodes of the season including the great two part episodes "Apokolips
Now!," "Little Girl Lost" and " the series finale "Legacy." Other notable changes were the inclusion of some superguest stars such as Aquaman and Green Lantern, as well as the introduction of Supergirl to the series. --Rob Bracco

Customer Reviews:
An extremely well written cartoon series.......2007-05-19
Sadly this is the last season of this great cartoon series. This is by far the darkest of all of the Superman seasons. The finale ("Legacy") is done brilliantly, ending the season on a rather bleak note. Additionally the last episode leads straight into the first episode of Justice League season 2. The JL episode does a fantastic job of continuing the dark tone set in the "Legacy". Highly recommended.
Excellent adventures!.......2007-05-14
Great chapters of this series. There is nothing like seeing your favourite superheroe in a nice series, and nicely made. Great item for your collection.
Superman vol 3.......2007-03-22
"Lois, help! It's worse than kryptonite. My legs can't support this obscenely large hulking torso, when they draw me like this. It was so much easier in the Filmation days, when I had an even build."
"I know, Clark. They draw me like a stick insect midget. You look like the Hulk by comparison."
The only other disappointment in this series is that kryptonite needn't exist. Just about everything else affects Superman to some extent as well. In a commentary in Vol 1 or 2, the producer said, "you got no show, if you don't do that." (Superfriends writers Hanna-Barbera got half hour stories out of a fully invulnerable Supes).
BUT APART FROM THAT, IT'S AN ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT SHOW.
This set may confuse collectors who didn't buy vol 2. The DVD set releases are not grouped as seasons 1-3.
Vol 1 gives you the shorter season 1 and the first few episodes of Season 2.
Vol 2 gives you most of season 2.
Vol 3 (this one) gives you the last few eps of season 2 and the whole of season 3.
I particularly enjoyed the premier appearances of other DC characters not on tv before. Rather than take a chance on giving them their own shows, Warner came up with a brainstorm. Almost every second episode of Superman in this DVD set teams Superman up (in the comic book style of DC Comics Presents...) with another Super Hero, including 2 more Batman appearances (one with Tim Drake Robin), the New Gods, Aquaman (drawn much better than his half naked long haired nose ringed appearance in Justice League), Legion of Super Heroes, and the first tv appearance of the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern (all but ignoring Hal Jordan, but it's good to see Kyle).
The Legion story is set in Clark Kent's college years, before he became Superman, and adapts the premise for Legion of Super Heroes: They go into the past from the 30th Century to young Clark's time, and team with him. A great prototype for the Legion series that aired last year.
Also, if you're wondering what happened to Batman's enemies Ras Al Gul and Bane in his own series, you'll get your answers here in two team-ups with Superman. "Knight Time" adapts the long running Knightfall Batman plotline of the early 1990s, using Superman as Batman's stand-in, rather than Jean-Paul. "Demon Reborn" pits Ras against Superman and Batman, whose Worlds Finest relationship is developing at just the right pace to continue in Justice League season one.
Buy this one for sure,
Peter
The best of the three volumes!!!.......2007-02-08
this is really good stuff, a lot of team ups for Superman with several of the most powerfull superheros of DC comics ever.
It only lake of some more featurings, but i can live with that,so far best content of the series.
Great gift.......2007-01-16
This was a gift for my son, and it was what he wanted.

Superman: The Animated Series, Volume Two, the second of the series' three season run, continues the modern telling of the American myth Superman. Where the first season focuses on introducing Superman, Metropolis, and a few key bad guys, season two is all about the villains. A few key villains return, including Lobo, series favorite Metallo (voiced by Malcolm McDowell), and of course the evil genius Lex Luthor. But what defines season two is the introduction of new villains such as Superman's evil twin Bizarro (in "Identity Crisis" and "Bizarro's World"), Livewire (voiced by Tank Girl herself Lori Petty), and Luminus (voiced by Airplane!'s Robert Hays). Also new to the series is Mr. Mxyzptlk in one of the best episodes of the series, "Mxyzpixilated," starring the great Gilbert Gottfried as the quirky, interdimensional leprechaun. One of the series' highlights is the three-part episode "World's Finest." This trilogy is a great cross-over story with guest appearances from the other popular DC animated series Batman. Here the man of steel joins forces with the caped crusader to fight Gotham's arch villains the Joker (played by Mark Hamill) and Harley Quinn, who have recently teamed up with Metropolis's Lex Luthor in a plot to kill Superman. Superman: The Animated Series, Season Two is a sharp telling of the Superman story and not to be missed. --Rob Bracco

Superman, Volume 2.......2007-03-09
Well for anyone who enjoyed this series back in the 90's this is a must have. And if you really like Superman this is a must, must have! I grew up watching this show and since I am a huge fan of Superman once I had a good job and therefore money, I decided to get this series on DVD and I sure wasn't dissapointed. This Volume introduces some great villains and is full of awesome episodes with some interesting bonus material as well.
A fun and worthwhile revisioning of Superman - although the main character is often Lois Lane.......2007-01-29
There are a number of criticisms of the Man of Steel, most notably that he's so powerful there can be little suspense in his battles. Therefore, there are really only 2 types of battles in the Superman universe - those with villians as powerful as he, and those involving kryptonite (his Achillies Heel). The producers of the Superman: the Animated Series know this, and wisely introduce a number of innovations in order to keep the stories fresh.
The most important, from a storytelling perspective, is that the stories often centre on Lois Lane instead of Superman. This also allows the writers to give the Clark Kent personna lots of screen time, as a sidekick to Lois. The two best episodes of this season are examples of this: In "Brave New Metropolis," Lois is teleported to an alternate universe where Superman is a vaguely fascist policeman (the S on his suit is a stylised Nazi-SS lightning bolt) in Lex Luthor's dictatorship of Metropolis. The best episode of the series is called "The Late Mr. Kent," wherein Clark is hot on the tail of a sensitive story that results in a car bomb being detonated under him. Of course, Clark as Superman is unhurt, but Clark the human could never have survive the blast. This leads to the very entertaining and interesting storyline of Superman trying to figure out how to bring Clark back to life. (In the best scene in the season, the police are baffled that Clark's mom doesn't seem concerned that her son has just been killed. "Ma'am, are you sure you understand the implications of what I've just told you?")
Of course, there are also some knock-down, drag-out fights with some of Superman's arch enemies. Here, though, the series is not at its finest, although it's through no fault of its own. Superman simply doesn't have the cast of villians of, say, Batman. Even the most casual fan would be able to name several Batman villians (e.g., Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze). After Lex Luthor and Mr. Mxyzptlk (the latter of whom is a one-trick pony), there are no real first-line villians in Superman's pantheon. This show did introduce a new villain named Livewire (with a high-octane voice by Lori Petty), and this season does feature Darkseid in one episode and Brainiac in another. But, as expected, the vast number of shows are variations of some Lex scheme to destroy Superman, or take over the world, or whatever.
The highlight for many (and the reason I bought this disc) will be the 3-episode crossover with the Batman universe titled, appropriately, "World's Finest." Joker finds a large piece of kryptonite and offers to kill Superman for Lex Luthor. The friction common between Batman and Superman is evident, this time brought on by the neat twist of ahving Bruce Wayne date Lois Lane. Overall, it might be the most enjoyable multi-part story in all of the Superman/Batman animated series.
Superman Flies Higher In Volume Two.......2006-07-23
Further proof of my shame of not viewing this series when it was originally on air, Volume 2 features some of my favorite episodes. It features the three parter which really turned me on to the series and that was "World's Finest" which was (if memory serves me correct) was Batman's first appearance since his original series run ended around 1995. Around this time, they were making the re-vamp eppys of Bats but they didn't premiere until 1997 I believe.
Anyway, here is what's cookin' on Volume 2:
Disc 1
Identity Crisis - Bizzaro, the reverse Superman, is re-introduced here as a failed clone experiment gone ary by none other than Lex Luthor.
Target - Lois Lane, who has made her share of enemies both by her own strong personality and her association with Superman, is now the target of someone who has felt wronged by the spunky reporter.
Action Figures - Metallo shows up on an island with no memory of his past.
Mxzpixilated - A little alien with the hard to spell name shows up in Metropolis to make life miserable for both Superman and his alter ego, Clark Kent!
Double Dose - Freed from prison, Livewire wants revenge on Superman and enlists The Parasite to do it but will her lust for vengence blind her to a bigger danger?
Solar Power - A former boyfriend of Lois Lane gains the power to manipulate light and uses it to weaken and take down Superman!
Bonus Feature
Menaces Of Metropolis: Behind The Villaias Of Superman
Disc 2/Side A
Monkey Fun - An old pet monkey from Lois' past returns but Giganto isn't the same little monkey he once was.
Brave New Metropolis - Lois gets sent to a parallel universe where Superman is the villian! Also, its a world where she is dead!
Ghost In The Machine - Braniac survives his near destruction during "Stolen Memories" and forces Lex Luthor to rebuild his body! We also find out a little more about Merci!
World's Finest, Pt. 1 - The future founders of The Justice League meet for the first time as Batman discovers that The Joker has stolen a dragon statue......made of Kryptonite! Also, a major twist is thrown in as Bruce Wayne (Batman's alter ego) begins romancing Lois Lane, much to Clark's chagrin!
World's Finest, Pt. 2 - After discovering each other's secret identities, Batman and Superman reluctanctly begin to work together to bring down The Joker and Lex Luthor. Tension remains, however, due to Batman's romantic interest in Lois Lane.
World's Finest, Pt. 3 - Lois discovers that Batman is Bruce Wayne and is torn between what could be a major story for her and her feelings for Bruce. Meanwhile, Superman and Batman go into a final showdown with The Joker and Lex Luthor!
Disc 2/Side B
Father's Day - Kalabak, wanting to prove himself to his father Darkseid, goes to Earth to defeat Superman.
The Hand Of Fate - In this episode, Superman meets Dr. Fate for the first time.
Bizarro's World - Surviving his near death in "Identity Crisis", Bizarro wanders Metropolis wanting to belong!
Prototype - An exosuit worn by a police officer also makes him more irrational!
The Late Mr. Kent - Thinking that Clark Kent is dead, Superman investigates who tried to kill him.
Heavy Metal - We meet Steel for the first time as tries to help Superman against Metallo!
Favorites here are Double Dose, Brave New Metropolis, Ghost In The Machine, The Late Mr. Kent and World's Finest but all the eppys have some significance! Well worth its price!
When Mxyzpixilation meets Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!.......2006-06-17
Completely, absolutely, magnificently wonderful! If you liked "Superman, the Animated Series: Volume 1," then you'll adore and love "Superman, the Animated Series: Volume 2" because the best episodes of the 1997 animated series are here! Viewers first get introduced to one of Superman's most trickiest enemies - Mr. Mxyzptlk!!!!! A powerful being from the 5th dimmension, Mr. Mxyzptlk, is very hard for Superman to beat in the episode. Other great super-villains make their first appearance here too. Such characters include: Luminus, Karkull, Bizarro, and Darkseid (Darkseid made a small cameo in Volume 1, but this is his true first episode). In three of these great episodes, Barman and Superman must team-up in order to defeat Lex Luther and The Joker who are working together to destroy The Man of Steel! Also.....Superman meets his clone, Metallo returns with amnesia, someone is trying to secretly kill Lois Lane (but who?), Braniac downloads himself into Lex Luthor's computer, Parasite and Livewire team-up, Clark Kent is thought to be dead, Lois Lane gets stuck in an alternate version of Metropolis, and Superman must battle a really big monkey!

This volume is very exciting and action-packed. With very, very, very good plots and story lines - this is even better than the comics! While, this is a children's show, I can asure you that it will NOT be ONLY accepted and loved by children. This is true entertainment and adults enjoy it, too. You don't find good shows like these anymore, so I recommend you to start the Timm/Dini animated DC universe collection on DVD box-sets! Even if you're not a Superman fan, if you liked 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series," (and even if you didn't) you'll definetely love this. "Superman: The Animated Series" rocks!!! Buy this for a new generation of children, because it's worth it!

From the creators of Batman: The Animated Series comes DC Comics' polar opposite: the Man of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series, Volume One. Like the Dark Knight's series, Superman: The Animated Series is a successful, modern telling of the classic story. Superman's tale is already known to most people, enduring as a modern American myth. The challenge for the producers was how to make something old and familiar new again. Quite successfully, they managed to modernize the Superman environment and its characters enough to attract a new audience but also maintained the integrity of the mythos to satisfy longtime fans. What lifts Superman: The Animated Series above all past Superman shows is its high-quality animation, strong dramatic scripts, a star studded cast, and the creators' willingness to present the show more like a series than a cartoon. It begins with a three-part episode ("The Last Son of Krypton") chronicling the last days of Krypton, the introduction of Braniac, Kal-El's trip to Earth, his development into Superman, and finally his introduction to the world. These three episodes lay the foundation for the next 15 adventures that follow, including confrontations with rivals Lex Luthor, Metallo, Braniac, the bizarre Lobo, and others. For fans of Superman, DC Comics, superheroes, the comic genre, and action tales in general, Superman: The Animated Series is not to be missed. --Rob Bracco

Nice to have, but..........2007-05-13
The DVD is very nice and must have but what you should now is that if you Superman season one dont buy Superman son of Krepton (included in season one). It is a waste of money! Also if you have Superman season 2 dont buy Superman Batman the movie (included in season 2)!Take care and dont waste your money like I did!At least amazone should mention this if WB dont care!
Superman lives on in one of the greatest cartoon versions of the Man of Steel ever made!!!.......2007-04-08
I still remember when this animated series was made and I fell in love with it since the first episode. This animated series comes on two disks with 18 episodes that has the Man of Steel battling aliens, giant robots, super computers, and his biggest rival of all, Lex Luthor! The action is great, especially in some of the episodes, and the voice casting for the characters was done really well. Add some extras to this disk set and you have a series that anyone of any age will enjoy!
Disk 1:
The Last Son of Krypton, Part 1: On an alien world called Krpton, a scientist named Jor-El realizes that the world is about to end and desperately tries to get the supreme council to evacuate the entire world. However the Supreme Council instead listens to Brainiac, a diabolical computer designed to collect the information about all the planets in the solar system, and also has intentions of letting Krpton be destroyed. Jor-El's pleas go to deaf ears and as the world ends the only survivor is Jor-El's son, who escapes on a spaceship sent to earth.
The Last Son of Krypton, Part 2: On earth, Kal-El [Jor-El's son] learns his alien heriatage from his adopted parents. Now knowing why he has all these special abilities Clark Kent is born and moves into the huge city of Metropolis to make a living as a newspaper reporter as well as saving people in times of need as Superman!
The Last Son of Krypton, Part 3: Lex Luthor, a powerful billonaire, sees Superman as a threat to running the city and hires a man named John Corban to attack superman in a huge robotic machine. [This wont be the last time you will see Corban in the series]
Fun and Games: Toyman, a deranged inventor inside a dummy suit, wants revenge for the murder of his father and its up to Superman to stop him. Really creepy ending to this episode.
A Little Peice of Home: During a robbery attempt at a museum, Superman comes across a strange rock called kryptonite which mysteriously weakens him. That is all the evidence needed for Lex Luthor to take hold of the rock and use it to try and kill Superman.
Feeding Time: A man named Rudy, who is in a low dead end job, is exposed to chemicals which turn him into a being that can absorb memories, strength, and knowledge of anyone that he touches, including Superman!
Disk 2 Side A
The Way of All Flesh: John Corban returns as he is about to be let free from jail, only to realize that he has been exposed to a virus that must lead to an operation to save his life. Lex Luthor then transforms him into Metallo, a cyborg like being with krptonite serving as his heart and power. A war then erupts with Corban and Superman.
Stolen Memories: Brainiac returns, this time showing up at Earth, and asks Superman to join him in exchange for memories and secrets of Krypton. However doubts follow superman and it isnt long before he discovers Brainiac's secrets.
The Main Man, Part 1: A bounty hunter named Lobo is hired by a collector of rare species to bring superman into his collection. This leads to a wild fight on earth and in space as both Superman and Lobo himself is double crossed and placed in the collector's habitat.
The Main Man, Part 2: Lobo and Superman now must team up to escape the collector and get back to safety. This leads to a huge showdown in the collector's giant spaceship involving other bounty hunters and dangerous rare species of aliens [my two favorite episodes!]
My Girl: A woman named Lana Lang, an old flame of Clark Kent's, shows up in Metropolis as Lex Luthor's new girlfriend. However Luthor realizes that lang is also mysteriously linked to Superman and decides to kill her in order to draw Superman into a trap.
Tools of the Trade: A criminal and his gang called Intergang are given weapons by a mysterious supplier who in turn works for one of Superman's most hated rivals, Darkside.
Two's a Crowd: A bomb maker is in a coma and has a bomb hidden in Metropolis somewhere. Superman has to resort to getting help from an enemy of his past in order to find the bomb before it is too late!
The Prometheon: A huge creature crashes on Earth and causes havoc by absorbing raw heat and attacking anything in its past. Superman must find a way to stop it before all of Metropolis is completely destroyed!
Disk 2 Side B:
Blasts from the Past [2 epsiodes] Superman discovers the Phantom Zone, where two krptonian criminals are being kept. Superman lets them out but soon realizes his big mistake after the two beings realize they can rule Earth after becoming as powerful as Superman.
Livewire: A woman with a loud mouth gets turned into a being of pure electricity in a huge accident. Blaming Superman for her transformation, Livewire as she now wants to be called is determined to destroy superman at all cost.
Speed Demon: The Flash, the first of the Justice League superheroes that shows up, challenges Superman to a race around the world. While they are racing the two superheroes realize a plot by someone called the Weather Wizard who wants to take over the world!
Extras include:
Superman, Learning to Fly: Tells about the creation of the series
Building the Mythology: A look at all the supporting characters that help make Superman, the Animated Series, what it is today!
This is definately recommended, a good voice cast, great action, and a lot of drama makes this a great series to get in to! highly recommended!
A masterpiece of a cartoon series.......2007-03-09
What more can you say about a cartoon that was so well written, it won an emmy!?! AN EMMY for crying out loud! This award is given only to sitcoms such as Seinfeld(well deserved), Everybody Loves Raymond(also well deserved) and yeah..Friends(not so deserved). Bare in mind that this Superman, the animated series, came out at a time when everyone thought Superman was basically dead. Mainly because they had him brutally killed, beaten to death in the comics, by a character named Doomsday! Man was there publicity written all over the newspapers about it. From the Daily News, The New York Post, maybe even The NY Times. All were discussing how Superman, a hero that was basically indestructable, was beaten to death, in an epic battle that will go down in comic book history! I have to admit though, as hard as it was to see Superman dead, the story was well written and it was spread out to 2 different comics, Action comics and Superman, the Man of steel. I wonder if the story had anything to do with the fact that it was written by a woman who was writing for the Superman comic series at the time. Not sure if she's there anymore...I wonder why...Anyways, getting back to Superman, TAS, this series is a MUST BUY for anyone and I mean anyone, who enjoys a really well written and directed cartoon. (Can we really say "well directed" when we're talking about a tv cartoon?) It doesn't matter. This one is so well written that even my wife, who doesn't really care for such cartoons, was practically glued to the TV with me and my son, who's now 6. Yeah, it's a little too violent for any kid under the age of 5 so I wouldn't try to expose him/her to some of the violence in this cartoon. Unless of course, you want to see him flying from one couch to the other, and coming close to breaking your favorite Lava Lamp. I bought all 3 volumes which covers the entire run of Superman, TAS and I wasn't disapointed AT ALL!! This cartoon is like watching a mini movie and judging by some of the movies out there now, this cartoon by far, is SOOOOOO much more interesting and much better to watch. I guess they had to bring people back to believing in Superman after he was given such a horrible death in the comics. DC probably couldn't afford to loose one of it's biggest money makers not only in comics but in movies as well. Superman was so loved by millions of people, myself included, that they had to bring him back somehow, in the way people remembered him. And what a way to bring him back to life. It's shame that the cartoon only lasted for 3 or 4 years, from 1996 to I think 1999. But keep in mind that it also came on the heals of another great cartoon series, the Batman, TAS which by the way, was also written by the same writers as Superman, TAS. These cartoons are so good that once you put the first DVD, of Superman TAS, Volume one, you won't be able to stop watching the other DVD, as 2 DVDs come in each volume, which is 18 episodes in total! To be honest, I almost spent an entire day watching Volume 1 before I even realized,"man it's almost 6:00 PM"! But I watched it anyway..(c'mon, there was only 3 episodes left!) I haven't watched all 3 volumes yet, but believe me when I tell you that this cartoon is very addictive! It made me feel like a kid again and I'm 44 years old!! It's been a looong time since I watched a cartoon that was this good, and honestly, it's better than any cartoon that I've ever seen in the past. Simply put, THIS CARTOON SET IS ONE OF THE BEST BUYS I HAVE EVER MADE. I intend on buying the Batman, TAS also as well as the Justice League. These are cartoons that were made way ahead of their time. They are for the true superhero fans. They show how powerful your favorite Superheroes really are, and the battle scenes are excellent, just like the comics...maybe even better. So do yourselves a favor, buy the first volume of Superman, TAS and believe me, you'll probably be running back to your computer to buy the other 2 volumes as well. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Too violent for 8-year-old.......2007-01-10
Our 8-year-old daughter found this show too violent (it has guns). If you're children like superheroes and are this age, try Kim Possible or Teen Titans.
Great Show.......2007-01-09
Same as before when it came to the other volumes. Superman is a great thoughout character.

Superman TAS..........2007-05-25
To be honest, This show was not all that great. One reviewer said it's not fair to compare Supe's TAS to Batman TAS. But c'mon. Bruce Timm and his buddies really set the bar extremely high with Batman, but Superman though lighter and "nicer," well, just does not have as quality stories as Batman. I admit I'm a Batman fan OK. And of course he's way cooler. But if your'e going to take a guy from another planet who dresses up in red, yellow and blue tights, flies around and punches stuff, you need good story for people to take it seriously. Maybe it's just the boyscout in Superman that makes him so cheesy. So why the four stars. Well, I think some of the greatest episodes in this are...World's Finest 1,2 and 3. Yes, the ones with Batman. I'm sorry, Batman just makes even Superman look Cooler. But if youre a Supes fan you should definately get this. It's way better than any cartoon they have out there now ("The Batman"). It still deserves four stars because there are some great episodes like The Last Son of Krypton,The Way of All Flesh,Blast from the Past, The Late Mr. Kent, Apokolips Now, and of course the Finale, Legacy.I must say, Darkseid is great in this. There are a couple of lame episodes but if you like Supe's, definately get this.
A good series that never quite flew.......2006-09-22
Superman's most recent animated series could have been a great show, but it never quite made it. Part of the problem was an unfair comparison to the Batman series, which had just finished production (though it would be renewed briefly for the Superman/Batman hour). While Batman immediately had a sense of theme and mood--dark, gothic, and occasionally morbid--Superman suffered from being pushed into the daylight. It's easier to believe that criminals in a city of perpetual night would look and act like maniacs, but in sunny Metropolis it's often difficult to get beyond the silliness of the supervillains. The show's creators made a good decision by incorporating elements of Kirby's Fourth World (e.g., Darkseid's invasion of Earth) into the show, thereby placing Superman in a universe of super-powered beings even more larger-than-life than himself.
Unfortunately, the show did not last long enough to do a great job with the Fourth World, and it wasted too much time on trivial villains like Toyman, Parasite, Livewire and Bizarro. Meanwhile, promising villains like Brainiac (inventively rethought for the show), Metallo and two Kryptonian criminals showed up only rarely and might as well have been tossed altogether. After a fun beginning, where old and new characters were creatively introduced, the show tapered off into mediocrity, and ended with a handful of overly-preachy episodes that couldn't be saved, even by an excellent finale (once again utilizing the Fourth World).
Still, the show has some glorious highlights. The episode "Mxzpixilated" is one of the funniest things ever to hit television, and is one of the few Mxyzptlk stories I enjoy. Brainiac recreated as Krypton's artificial intelligence was a stroke of genius, and provided a new context for his previous "shrunken cities" shtick. Lana Lang as a fashion designer was a great idea that wasn't used often enough, but when it was it worked (especially in "The Late Mr. Kent"). The concept of Supergirl as a native of Krypton's sister planet was also well done, and she was a great, cheery character.
It's unfortunate that the show's creators never quite found the same groove that they found for Batman, but this series was still a valiant attempt at recreating the Superman mythos. Maybe the "Superman Curse" spreads into all attempts to tell Superman stories; very few of the shows and movies manage to do it well. Still, this is one of the best.
Superman: TAS seasons1-3.......2006-08-19
I got this though Ebay,I bidded and won it. I haven't watched it,yet.
You won't regret purchusing this terrific series!.......2006-08-10
If you've never seen Superman the animated series, and if you have the cash, this is the perfect way to enjoy it. Should you choose to purchus volumes I-III, you'll get all 54 episodes of this hit series.
What are you in for if you buy this set? Well, here are some highlights from each volume.
In Volume I, we discover the origin story of Earth's greatest hero in an explosive three part pilot, The Last Son of Krypton. We also get our first look at Lex Luthor, who has spent years having his own way in Metropolis, and isn't happy to see this new savior show up. Superman also faces Brainiac for the first time, and this villain, I must tell you, has strong connections to Superman's past. The Flash also makes a guest appearance in Speed Demons, Superman's first superhero team up. We're also introduced to Lobo, a galactic bounty hunter who's bent on adding Superman to the collection of an alien preserver. Bonus features in this volume include a look at the conception of the series, as well as taking a closer look at some of Superman's fellow protagonists. Oh, and did I mension that we're also introduced to one of Superman's greatest foes, Darksied? Hang on because I'm not done boasting about this fantastic series yet.
In volume II, Superman must face an insane, but well meaning clone of himself, Bizarro, who. And he must also team up with Dr. Fate to stop a powerful demon from transforming all of Metropolis into his slaves. Brainiac also makes a comeback. And Darksied's horrific son journeys to Earth in order to test Superman's metal. But the greatest highlight of Volume II is when the Dark Knight himself ventures to Metropolis. Batman and Superman meet for the first time, and must work together to stop Lex Luthor and the Joker who have also joined forces. An excelent three parter, and a nice taste of what's to come in terms of the Justice League. Bonus features in this volume include a look at the villains of Superman, and several audio commentaries.
In the third and final volume of Superman, Cal El is in for the fight of his life because Darksied has finally decided to set his sights on Earth. Superman must draw on all of his strength in order to defeat his greatest adversary. But this time, Superman's victory comes with a terrible price. These events occur in Apocalypse Now, a very memorable two part episode. But Superman isn't alone in his struggles, for he discovers a surviver of Argo, sister planet to Krypton, and she decides to take up the mantle of Supergirl in another one of my favorite multipart episodes, Little Girl Lost. There are more Superhero team ups in this volume. Superman joins forces once again with Batman to stop Ra's Al Gul. And he must also team up with Aquaman in order to defeat Lex Luthor. And the series ends with a thrilling two part episode entitled Legacy in which Superman is manipulated and brainwashed into attacking Earth, the planet he has sworn to protect. And he must try to regain his reputation, as well as face off against Darksied and the forces of Apocalypse yet again.
So if you have the money to spend, why not buy all three volumes of this wonderful series? This is and will always be my favorite incarnation of Superman. So if you choose to buy this set, enjoy!

This collection of fully restored, 1930s animated shorts from the legendary Max Fleischer are a real treat. For anyone who has grown up associating the Superman character with different phases of art direction in Superman comic books over the last 50 years, or best remembers the look of the Christopher Reeve films or the old television show, these 'toons will be a mini-revelation. Expanding on cues from the first generation of Superman comics, Fleischer immerses the man from Krypton in a marvelous blend of art deco, William Cameron Menzies-inspired sets, and edgy compositions that can't help but remind one of Fritz Lang-ian paranoia. Everything is oversized, blocky but rounded, ferociously modernist, and all too vulnerable. Superman's very function as a character in these highly dramatic and richly colored fables is both defending the overbearing, urban progressiveness and capital excesses of a young 20th century while also reassuring us that progress is not as indomitable as a man--at least a Superman. The DVD includes a bonus Fleischer short, "Play Safe," plus information about the restoration process, three choices of sound, complete history, synopsis, and credits. --Tom Keogh

The Complete Superman Cartoons - Diamond Anniversary Edition.......2007-05-22
The Fleischer Brothers' Studio were doing animation work, light years ahead of their time. Cartoon animation seems to be the correct arena to display a comic book story. The still pages of the comic strip come to life with amazing(and sometimes surrealistic) colors;check out "The Magnetic Telescope". Sammy Timberg's musical arrangements hold you riveted into the ever-progressing action of the plot. And then, there is always at the end of the story a comforting quip from Clark Kent to the viewers. This is Superman as he was meant to be. This is Superman from the 1940s. This is Superman who could leap tall buildings in a single bound. Not the Superman of today who travels from galaxy to galaxy. This is the time zone into which Superman was born. Relive it!!! Don't miss it!! Buy this treasure of American Mythology today!!
In the beginning..........2007-04-10
Holy cow, these 10-minute animated shorts are awesome! The funnest part in watching them is to see Superman, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and the whole gang in their originality. The stories are basic but smart, quick-paced, exciting, and heroic. Yeah, the soundtracks are a bit over-the top at times, but that was the music style of adventure movies in the 1940s. I love the spirited characterizations and some of the stories like with the volcano, the runaway train robbery, etc.
I also noticed how the recent Donner and Singer films have borrowed from these. Especially in "Superman Returns", his flying style of dropping out of the sky feet-first was originally done in these animations -- COOL! A must for Superman fans.
Fun; Nice animation.......2007-04-10
I recommend this DVD set for fans of Superman and classic animation (1st half of 20th century). The stories are fun and the visuals are very nice to watch.
A Timeless Classic.......2007-04-03
It is amazing to see all of the work and artistry that went into this series. It is also interesting to think of what was transpiring in the outside world when these were shown in theaters. I also wonder if we give these serials enough credit in the formation of the Superman mythos. After all, they came out just a few years after his creation. Great stuff.
Great stories from the golden age of animation.......2007-03-26
Excellent quality Max Fleischer from the "golden age" of animation as well as dramatic stories make these a treat. People expecting animated series from later decades may be disappointed if they purchase these by mistake, but they really shouldn't be. The Max Fleischer "Superman" still looks good today and indeed it has an edgy, sometimes surreal, look ...and a natural difference from modern animation practices...that makes these cartoons quite arty. And the storylines haven't all become outdated either. They still pack a punch. And Max's Louis Lane is one tough adventurous female, in many ways more of a modern feminist era heroine than the Lois Lane from subsequent TV series and movies. Thanks Max!

This feature-length tape began as a three-episode story line on the animated TV series, a superhero crossover where Bruce Wayne visits Metropolis and the Dark Knight meets the Man of Steel for the first time. The two heroes mix like oil and water, the law-and-order Superman suspicious of Batman's rather ruthless methods; but they form an uneasy partnership when Lex Luthor and the Joker team up to take on the duo. To add a personal dimension to the already edgy rivalry, Wayne romances Lois Lane under Clark Kent's very nose. The stylized animation and sharp design of the TV series give the limited animation a sleek, smooth quality and an energetic sense of movement. Timothy Daly supplies the voices for Clark Kent and (in a deeper register) Superman, with Kevin Conroy performing the same vocal trick for Bruce Wayne/Batman; but Dana Delany only has to worry about one persona as Lois Lane. The once-and-future Luke Skywalker, cult film star turned voice actor Mark Hamill, provides the Joker's cackling banter. --Sean Axmaker.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best cartoon movies I've ever watched.......2007-04-23
Just thought you'd like to know, this movie was actually shown in 2 episodes of the Superman, the animated series. So if you're looking to buy the entire Superman,TAS, which I HIGHLY recommend, then DON'T BUY this movie as you'll be buying it twice! Getting back to this review. What else can be said but that it was a great great movie! Pairing superman & batman and both finding out each other secret identity. Plus the battle both Superman & Batman had with Luthor & the Joker was classic! I won't tell you what Batmen went up against in this movie, but it was verry similar to a battle that another well known superhero, Spiderman, had. Either way, it was a great battle and one of the best parts of this movie. The Lois Lane storyline was good also. It wasn't too violent so I watched this with my then 5 year old son and he LOVED IT! After it was done, he wanted to see it again. All I can say is that this cartoon brought back alot of memories of long ago when superhero cartoons were fun to watch. It wasn't watered down or politically corrected like the SuperFriends were, because you were able to see the heros using ALL of their powers. If you're a fan of good superhero cartoons, then this cartoon, (which again, you can see in it's entirety in the Superman, TAS)is well worth buying!
Very interesting.......2007-03-08
Bought this for my son who is 4 and he loved the interaction between Batman and Superman. As a mom, i found it interesting and not boring at all. Joker is really funny. I recommend it.
When two heroes meet at last!.......2006-12-15
The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamil) has hatched an evil scheme as he finds a special object that contains kryptonite as he heads to Metropolis to make a deal with Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) to help take down Superman (voiced by Tim Daley). Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy) heads down to Metropolis to track him down as he meets Clark Kent and falls for the lovely Lois Lane as only he as Batman along with Superman can foil Luthor's and Joker's diabolical plan.
Wonderfully animated and fantastic full length feature animated movie that finally has the two greatest superheroes from DC meeting each other for the first time in animation. Bruce Timm (producer and co-director of the Batman and Superman 90's cartoons) has done it again with another winner in the Batman animated movie chronicles combining it with his "Superman The Animated Series", fans of both heroes shouldn't miss this movie.
The DVD doesn't offer much extras except for a game, interview, music montage, trailers and cast and crew info but if your into Batman and Superman get this movie.
Anyone up for a LIVE-ACTION "Batman/Superman Movie"?.......2006-11-30
I am. Anyway, to start out it's good fun to see Superman (Tim Daly) and Batman (Kevin Conroy) team up in one movie. There's nothing extra on the VHS version as far as trailers are concerned. But you can still enjoy the movie. "The New Batman Adventures" is much more violent than "Batman: the Animated Series", as for "Superman: The Animated Series" is less offensive than "TNBA" (if at all).
Trivia: Did you know that this movie was originaly three episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" titled "World's Finest"?
The Batman/Superman movie is really good!.......2006-10-01
The Batman/Superman movie is really good! Batman/ Bruce Wane comes to Metropolis to make a business deal with Lex Luthor. Bruce Wayne is also in Metropolis becuase he wants to date Lois Lane. This story creates tension between Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane. Meanwhile the Joker and Harley Quinn are free and they make deal with Lex Luthor to get rid of Superman! This is great animated movie! Bruce Timm did a good job with the story and characters! Highly Recommended! A+

The direct-to-DVD animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks pits Superman against two of his longest-running foes: Lex Luthor and the robotic Brainiac. Luthor's scheme is to re-jigger Brainiac's configuration using a combination of Superman's DNA and a rare form of Kryptonite to make him an unstoppable weapon against the Man of Steel. Fans of TV's Superman: The Animated Series will be pleased to note the return of Tim Daly and Dana Delany, who reprise their roles as Superman and Lois Lane from the show, but hardcore Superman/Justice League Unlimited viewers may regret the loss of Clancy Brown's formidable performance as Luthor (who is voiced here by Powers Boothe), as well as Corey Burton as Brainiac (here handled by Lance Henriksen). Also missing is the series' adherence to its DC Comics origins and its serious tone, which here is blunted by Duane (The Batman, Jackie Chan Adventures) Capizzi's frothy script, which hews closer to a combination of the Superman films and broad comedy. --Paul Gaita
Description
Superman, about to finally divulge his identity and his feelings to Lois Lane, suddenly finds his mighty hands full when Brainiac, a powerful computer, bent on universal domination and Lex Luthor team up to defeat him. Armed with new weapons and a special strain of kryptonite infused in his body, Brainiac becomes the most powerful enemy The Man of Steal has ever faced. When Lois Lane is critically injured by a force beam that was intended for him, Superman must race into the mysterious Phantom Zone to find a cure. Brianiac, believing Superman to be dead, betrays Lex Luthor and begins his attack on the city of Metropolis and ultimately Earth. Will Superman survive the Phantom Zone in order to defeat his deadly foes, save Lois and Metropolis?
Customer Reviews:
What a shame.......2007-06-26
Apparently set outside the DCAU, we find Superman/Clark Kent contemplating revealing himself to Lois Lane, the woman he loves, but things are thrown off when Brainiac and Lex Luthor get involved, resulting in alien sicknesses, a quest for the cure in the Phantom Zone, and a big fight between Superman and a giant Brainiac robot.
Sound compelling? Well, I'm afraid it isn't. Poor dialogue and childish storytelling make this an embarrassment to the characters and fans everywhere. I guess this is what happens when Bruce Timm and Paul Dini aren't in charge. Lance Henriksen subs for Corey Burton as Brainiac, and he throws out a decent voice for it, but he also sounds out of place, while Powers Boothe subs for Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor and sadly he does a horrible job with it, playing Luthor more like a campy 60s Batman villain than the charming scheming brute Brown made him (Boothe also voiced, more effectively, Gorilla Grodd on Justice League). Tim Daly comes back as the voice of Superman (having had missed out on Justice League due to the short lived Fugitive remake, requiring George Newbern to replace him) and he still throws out a good Superman voice, but everything around, except for Dana Delany as Lois Lane, is very poor. Still, the fight between Superman and the giant Kong sized Brainiac was fun to watch, moreso than anything in Bryan Singer's bloated "Superman Returns".
It's too bad they didn't use this as a chance to bridge the gap between the criminally underrated "Superman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League: TAS", tying off the storyline started in LEGACY, showing Superman regaining the trust of the Eath.
Not even finished wtaching it... .......2007-04-05
Unbelievable, I'm about 2 minutes in and I already hate it. Was Clancy Brown too busy taping his useless Lost cameos to voice Luthor? As a fan of JLU, my first thoughts were "Why is Lex voiced by Grodd?" It reminded me of a Krypto episode, which might be fine for kids, but even this was nauseatingly worse than that show. The DVD...(Wait, I'm shutting it off, I might throw up too)... Should have had a disclaimer- Not for fans of Superman: The Animated Series or the Man of Steel himslef!!
My two year old cousin is a Superman fan (Or Soopid-Man, as he calls him. And Spider-Man for that matter. We'll work on that)and I would feel bad giving this to him.
Anyway, I'll use it as a coaster or something.
The lithograph that it came with was cool anyway.
Sorry Bruce Timm, your work really deserved better.
Awful.......2007-02-28
This is truly a disgrace to Bruce Timm, Clancy Brown, and Corey Burton. This could have been a truly great movie with the proper cast, directors, and producers(being that this wasn't a Bruce Timm project). Lex Luthor is portrayed more as comic relief than as a villian. Clancy Brown and Corey Burton had made their respective characters true villians during the Superman and Justice League series. Of course this movie wouldn't have been such a let down if the DCAU hadn't been as great as it was. It would be great if one day Bruce Timm would make a Justice League movie with an "epilogue" feel that could truly bring the DCAU to a close.
Superman: Brainiac Attacks.......2007-02-07
Why bother?
This feature tends to ignore all the subsequent developments between Superman, Luthor and Brainiac which occurred in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. (This trend is facilitated by bringing back original Superman Animated series voice artist Tim Daly as Superman/Clark Kent).
Despite several temporary upheavals in the lives of the characters, nothing is really changed by the end of the feature.
Soundtrack music is uninspiring.
Still, if you collect every instalment in the DC Animated Universe, as I do, this is still a must.
Supeman is still drawn like a hulking goliath. Lois Lane is still drawn like a diminutive stick insect.
Why Warner's artists continue to excessively exaggerate the differences between men's and women's physiques, I don't know. Give me the old Filmation 1960s versions of these characters anyday. HOW ABOUT IT, WARNER BROS. RESPOND TO MY 2006 LETTERS AND RELEASE THESE SHOWS, IN THEIR UNCUT ENTIRETY.
Fans, please request the same: Superman (1966-67), Aquaman (1967), Batman (1968 & 1977). We won't get it on DVD, unless Warner is awoken to the demand for what's spent decades in their vaults.
Not a continuation..........2007-02-06
Let me begin by saying that I don't really think that this is a five star movie. But Amazon uses a reviewer average, and I felt that the average of this one really should be closer to three stars rather than what it is.
It is important to note before ever seeing Brainiac Attacks that this isn't a continuation of Superman the Animated Series. There are many things that occur that are inconsistent to that series, which makes it much better to simply view this one as a stand alone movie. Some examples of what I am talking about are:
1. When Lex Luther and Brainiac first meet in this movie it is played as though they have never met before, even though they actually met the first time Brainiac came to Earth. Brainiac says something to the effect that he saw data about Luther in a download, which should have been unnecessary since they did meet before.
2. Luther is a completely different character than he was in the series. He was a very serious man, much more threatening. The Luther in this movie is more of a comic character, leaving room for Brainiac to be the truly intimidating villian of the movie.
3. When Brainiac enters Superman's Fortress of Solitude, he gets all excited about being able to download all the knowledge of Krypton from Superman's console, something that Brainiac shouldn't have to do since he comes from Krypton himself.
So this movie doesn't continue the animated series. It may feature the same animated look, and some of the original voices, but it takes everything in a new direction. That doesn't, however, mean that it is bad. Looked at in this perspective I feel it is a fairly decent movie. The action sequences are good. The story doesn't drag; it keeps you interested throughout. The grips I have with it are some of the moments of "comedy" that they felt that had to throw in that I felt were reminisent of those terrible Superman movie sequels (III, IV, and parts of the original Lester version of II). But just like the original Lester version of Superman II, it does have its good points that overshadow its bad points and make it an overall fun movie. Expectations are everything when watching a movie, so if you deside to watch this one come to it with the right perspective. It isn't as good as Superman the animated series, and it doesn't even come close to the Justice League. But it is fun in its way and I think you will enjoy it if you view it in this light.

Thanks Max!
