Campbell Scott bristles, burns, and sneers as Roger, a would-be smoothie who gets jilted by his older lover (who also happens to be his boss at an advertising agency). When his teenage nephew Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) appears at his office the next day, hoping for lessons in how to deal with the ladies, Roger uses his nephew partly as a foil, partly as a prop as he vents his anger and unhappiness on women in a scathing tour of bars and parties. A sharp script and multidimensional performances make Roger Dodger more than a standard war-of-the-sexes diatribe. Scott (Big Night, The Spanish Prisoner) doesn't ask for sympathy and doesn't allow for pity--his award-winning performance as Roger has defiance and dignity, whether the character is spitting bile or humiliating himself. Featuring strong supporting performances from Eisenberg, Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Jennifer Beals (In the Soup), and (surprise) Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls). --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars obnoxious.......2007-01-15

This movie just doesn't do anything for me. I am suspicious the marketing people and staffs working on this movie write most good reviews here.

The movie is just creepy. The uncle totally abuses his nephew. That's so not showing a kid how to play the game. That's child abuse. The main character (the uncle) is obnoxious. He just keeps yapping and yapping nonsense. It gives you a headache.

The dialogues are poorly written. It's not smart or funny. Everything coming from the main character's mouth makes me want to hang myself. He is so annoying and 99% of the movie is him talking.

4 out of 5 stars "Sex And The City or Boys' Night Out".......2006-12-01

"Roger Dodger" is a very clever and witty film with the memorable performances from Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley, Jennifer Beals, and Jesse Eisenberg (as Roger's teen-aged nephew Nick who one day unexpectedly comes to NYC to pay his uncle a visit and to learn from him the fine art of seducing women).

The film belongs to Campbell Scott who gives a wonderful performance as a man that sure knows how to talk but who has a lot to learn on how to communicate and relate to somebody. It's been said that men love with their eyes and women - with their ears. While I am not completely in love with what the main character, Rodger Swanson says, I am deeply in love with How Campbell Scott delivers Rodger's theories about sex, gender differences, and voyeurism.

3 out of 5 stars decent film, but not one to go out of the way for.......2006-10-30

I did like this movie, but it just did not do a lot for me. The "gameplay" of finding companionship has been overdone in films, so there really was nothing new about the script or the conversations that roger had with young nephew mick, or with the girls they met. However, done as a tour through new york, and having it be an uncle showing his young 16 year old nephew through the perils, pretty clever. Overall though, it just left something to be desired, unfinished. And the ending was just not great. Needed something a little different. As for the DVD preparation, the special features are really quite useless. If you can borrow this, or pick it up for cheap on VHS, do it. If not, rent is once on dvd and pass it around so no one else spends too much on this film.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Dodger - I likey.......2006-10-27

Young teenager comes to NYC and learns the way of the woman from his rebel advertising exec. uncle. Hasn't this happened to everyone? We're young and awkward around women -- just can't seem to get the words out -- hopeless. But wait, we go to visit colleges and ironically come home with the education that really matters, the one you can't learn in class. It's a cool premise and it plays out nicely. This indie feature is well shot, fast paced, and written like a swiss watch. Well cast and a great story. If only it were real.

5 out of 5 stars "It's All About The Visuals" .......2005-12-19

Prepare yourself for an illuminating evening which begins in an upscale New York bar but slowly degenerates into visiting some of the more unseamly locations of the big city. The story revolves around Rodger (Campbell Scott), an egotistic, insecure, overly analytical wordsmith who has just been dumped by his female boss (Isabella Rossellini). His sixteen year old nephew Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) unexpectedly shows up in his office and Roger decides to break the young boy in 'New York Style.' Prepare for a crash course in how to pick up a woman as taught in the sometimes alluring, often times sleazy world of Uncle Roger, the proverbial lounge lizzard.

Dialogue is everything in this film and most of it comes from the incredibly glib and searing tongue of the recently scorned Roger who has yet to learn how to deal with rejection. Roger is the self-proclaimed prophet of the "Gender Wars" and is determined to teach his naive nephew how to cope with the opposite sex. This is as close to a one-man-show as you can get and Campbell Scott pulls it off in amazing fashion.

This is a film that demands your full attention. The dialogue comes fast and furious and you really don't want to miss a thing in this somewhat pessimistic but well contructed production.

Description

Eighteen-year old Harry Odum (Norman Reedus) has an unnaturally close relationship with his mother (Debbie Harry). But her possessive hold is tested when Harry shows promise as a henchman for the local mob. What starts with Harry's brutal pummeling of a stripclub owner ends up with his grooming for the higher ranks of the mob "family" that appreciates his lethal talents. When love finally triumphs over all, there's bound to be a few bodybags in this outrageous black comedy with a disturbing subtext and fine, quirky performances.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Twisted, yet beautiful.......2006-11-17

I admit, I only originally watched this movie for the actors in it, but as I was watching it, I felt myself intrigued by the strange, yet sick, bond between a mother and her son. The movie itself can, at times, lack slightly in story line, but the overall effect it has will leave any person thinking. Debbie Harry and Norman Reedus both have memorable, and at times haunting, performances that make the movie what it is. I would say this is a must see movie.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Elizabeth!.......2006-07-25

I agree with Elizabeth's review...any movie she likes, I'm sure that I'd like too. I've always loved the movies we've seen together. How long has it been now? Much too long... now that it's July of 2006, we should go see another one together soon...ktndto

4 out of 5 stars Twisted Oedipus Complex.......2005-02-15

I never saw the movie before I bought it, all I knew that Norman Reedus was in it and that I loved him in Boondock Saints and Blade II.

The people are wonderfully cast ~ not only Norman Reedus, but Deborah Harry as Harry's mother is a quirky Jewish mother and Adrien Brody is a wanna-be gangster to the point of ridiculousness. I loved Elina Lowensohn in the part as Iris.

It's a decidedly twisted combination of Jewish mob, Ohio, and a mama's boy...Very strange, but in this case it works ~ in an unusual way.

4 out of 5 stars A thriller that's smart, funny...and charming!.......2004-01-19

Charming may be an odd word to use to describe a thriller, but it fits in this case. This is a completely unique entry in the thriller category, effortlessly fusing the Jewish mob, Youngstown Ohio, and a mama's boy. Yes, a decidedly odd combination, but it works exceptionally well, thanks to intelligent writing and fine acting.

Harry Odum lives with his mother who dotes on him beyond the point of normalcy. Hence, Harry is seriously conflicted about the opposite sex and, as well, easily provoked into bouts of raging violence. This last quality proves to be an asset as a Jewish mob underling, Abie Pinkwise, hears of Harry's gifts which have been applied, quite diligently, to a strip club owner.

Harry's quickly recruited as muscle for Louis Varga who, in spite of his last name, is Jewish to the point of reveling in a typical meal--gefilte fish ("Jewish hamburger" he calls it), horseradish, matzoh, and the works--which he invites Harry, a goy (non-Jew), to participate in along with Louis' crew, all members of the tribe. Harry's good at his job--waxing (perhaps the Youngstown Ohio Jewish mob version of "whacking")--and so is soon rolling in dough, enough to buy a new house for him and his Mom.

As Mrs. Odum, Debbie Harry is spot on. She's an excellent actress given the right parts, and this is definitely one of the best parts she's done in a film. The Oedipal attachment she forces on Harry is so strong that near the end of the film, the inevitable happens (you can guess what that is), resulting in tragedy that nevertheless produces a malicious grin. This strong black comedy component of the film, then, is like fusing Bruce Jay Friedman's "A Mother's Kisses" or Dan Greenburg's "How to Be a Jewish Mother" with the Godfather. Except Harry himself is not Jewish, even though his mother is a Jewish mother to the max.

Harry meets Iris, a Hungarian emigre girl who eventually captures his confused heart. Elina Lowinsohn is perfect in this role, as is Isaac Hayes as a corrupt cop (a lotta self-respecting crime films have one of these, right?), Adrien Brody as a wanna-be gangster who emulates urban culture to the point of near-ridiculousness, and Norman Reedus as our hero Harry. The nicely juxtaposed opposites of deep down innocence (in Harry) and vicious brutality work well when combined with Iris' radiant simplicity, generating the charming element of the film.

A constantly broken chair and Mrs. Odum's other homey quirks supplies much of the humor here, but there is some grim stuff too. This is a quirky film that never really got its due and should be seen by many more people.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Twisted and Innovative Inversion of the word "love".......2003-11-02

Norman Reedus has to be perhaps one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. From starring roles in the Boondock Saints and minor roles in films like 8mm, he came into his own with this film. Adrien Brody as a wannabe gangster, obviously before playing Vladyslaw and Isaac Hayes in a great cameo...you are shown a twisted tale of mother/son bonding and a blossoming relationship between two young adults with a commonality in their desire for one another. Plenty of violence to consume that crowd...a dark comedy at its finest.

2 out of 5 stars time doesn't help a bad flick to be hip.......2005-09-17

this is minus 10 in "z" zone with this very poor and dull blaxploitation film . Everything looks cheap , from acting to action parts. Screenplay could have been interesting but stays in the around the main subject without getting really into it . Time doesn't need to be wasted by spending 90 minutes to watch this...

4 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Blaxploitation Gold.......2003-07-12

Fans of Blaxploitation will be more than satisfied with this DVD double feature. "The Black Gestapo" is a mean, nasty race-riot of a movie. A benevolent police group, the People's Army, attempts to aid the citizens of Watts, who are being terrorized by what appears to be a mob of bitter appliance salesmen. There's dissention in the army's ranks, however, and a splinter group made up of local criminals forms to run the white mob out of Watts (one wise guy is castrated in his bathtub, another is run off the road by a breast-baring Uschi Digart and shot up by the gang). The mob retreats, but this new People's Army takes their place, shaking down the citizens and having drunken orgies at their new compound (where Ms. Digart shows up again in the leader's bed). "Gestapo" is directed by R.L. (Lee) Frost, who directed such exploitation gems as "The Defilers," "The Pick-Up" and "Love Camp #7." This one's not as stylish as his earlier roughies, but he keeps the story moving with brisk pacing and plenty of sex n' violence (though mostly violence). There's not a single one of "The Black Gestapo"'s 88 minutes that's politically correct.

By comparison, "The Black Six" is an After School Special, focusing on a good-natured biker gang of six Viet Nam vets (all played by pro football players, including "Mean" Joe Green) who are riding across the U.S., doing odd jobs for weak-chinned farm women or terrifying bigots at a poorly constructed roadside cafe (our heroes literally bring down the clapboard restaurant while its owner--a part I'm sure was originally written for Shelley Winters--stands by the road shrieking). The beating death of one of the brother's brother takes the guys back to a hick town to avenge his murder. By this point, you'll have heard the theme song about 12 times. You'll hear it 12 more times before the final credits. Bad acting, silly dialog and extreme afros all lead to a totally incomprehensible ending. All this hilarity is brought to us by director Matt Cimber, who later went on to direct the Pia Zadora potboiler "Butterfly," which is, in view of "The Black Six," an accomplished film.

No fan of Blaxploitation can afford not to see these movies. The entertainment value is double the cost of the DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Great Social Comentary.......2003-07-11

Black Gestapo is a great social commentary. I would rank it with Animal Farm. It shows the dangerous of the black militant movement. In the movie a black militant , but non-violent organization hires outside help for protection. They warant this unit unlike any other in the group to use force to push out the opperessing mafia. Unfortuneatly, they become more crooked than the mafia. I love how the movie put extreme black radicalism in the same boat as the nazis movement. It was a wake - up call to me and many others.

The Black Six was a little lighter. It was about cool bikes and football player. It was good none the less.

2 out of 5 stars A Strange Little Gem.......2003-02-24

First, I'll admit that the only reason I bought this film was because Uschi Digard was creditted in it (anD, well, I found it cheap :-).

This is a strange little story about black revolutionaries, Panther styled, that split groups. One becomes very domineering and tyranical, which leads them to greater power. The other are the good guys who keep their revolution's ideals in sight. The two finally duke it out.

Look for:
The main bad guy is "Mack" from TV's "Night Court"
Uschi Digard in a few eye candy scenes. Some nudity, some action scenes. Worthwhile for Uschi Completists (am I the only one :-D)

im a huge Six Feet Under fan. but this DVD SUCKS. its filmed with a cheesy digital8 camera and so is the sound. it looks and sounds like crap. even the music video for Victim Of The Paranoid is weak. get the Six Feet Under DOUBLE DEAD DVD. thats an awesome one if you like Six Feet Under.

5 out of 5 stars why warn people, BUY THIS ANYWAYS.......2003-01-17

...This dvd is a collection of different taped shows on SFU's Maximum Violence Tour, not exactly professional but I really like the bootleg quality (high quality I will add, you're not getting ripped off here). SFU rule live, pounding mid-tempo brutality (not the fastest death metal band out there, then again this isn't Cannibal Corpse, who are still great btw) with some great songs like 4:20 and War is Coming. The loud guitars and crazy fans thrashing their heads and bodies, (check out the massive crowd headbanging during the first song, WOW!) and even some neekid metal girls. The fans abusing themselves in front of death master Chris Barnes is awesome, the kind of people that rip out so called hipsters facial piercings and have Slipknot fans running down the street in terror.
The videos go from venue to venue, which is really cool because the mood changes from place to place. And being a death metal band(unmarketable UNCONTROLLABLE!) the venue will go from 200 people to 2000 but the band gives it 346436346346346% everytime. The extra 20 minutes are great too, the best part being SFU sitting in a tour bus in Europe smoked out on tweed and drinking beer trying get members of Cryptopsy to eat a very very burnt piece of popcorn. And there's a wicked circular saw sticker for you axe in here too, wish there was 2 so I could keep one in the dvd case!
Anyways, well, if you like SFU you'll like this dvd, if you don't like SFU get back to watching your stupid mtv...and if you don't even who this is thinking this is a HBO dvd...this dvd is awesome, the 2nd SFU dvd is even better but pick this thing up too, YOU NEED IT.

5 out of 5 stars Six Feet Under are the lords of death metal.......2002-06-05

I bought this June 4th 2002 and I looked all over for the dvd edition and couldn't find it any where.When I looked over at [local store] for it I found it on vhs which I have no problem with.I had alreday read reviews on the internet about both the dvd and vhs edition and had found out that there is no difference in special features.I would just like to have a dvd version and will buy it if I ever see it.Anyway the content of Maximum Video is awesome!The cover art is gory and great.The only reason why people give bad reviews is because, they have only one camera most of the time and not so good picture.The bad picture and one camera don't matter to me what I got this video for was to watch Six Feet Under's Maximum Violence tour, a music video of Victim Of The Paranoid, and to see Six Feet Under rock out.I going to make a statement that I hope may live on forever in death metal history Chris Barnes is a monster on vocals.The guitar, bass, and drums are heavy and fit right in with Chris's bloody roaring.I think that the best song on the Maximum Violence tour was probably Revenge Of The Zombie or Hacked To Pieces.This is a great video and a great death metal band but, don't buy this if you hate bad content or can not stand Chris's violent lyrics.Other than that if you are just becoming a Six Feet Under fan just like me then this is the perfect video for you!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Awesome DVD.......2004-07-17

this is the Six Feet Under DVD you need to get. unlike Maximum Video the picture and sound are awesome. you can hear everything and the drum sound is more superb than any Six Feet Under record to date. the little skits and interludes and them trying to be funny stuff is pretty lame and usually gets skipped right thru when i watch it. but the concert is bad ass. tons of songs from True Carnage all the way back to Haunted. get this if you like Six Feet Under. theres also a Double Dead CD with this DVD for free available. but i hate live albums and it doesnt sound that great. i dont know why they didnt just take the audio from the DVD. they recorded a seperate live album in San Francisco that is riddled with mistakes and Chris Barnes calling the crowd 'bitch' (verry annoying). but get this DVD if you wanna rock. tons of energy and fans flying off the stage every 2 seconds. favorite song of concert: Silent Violence.

5 out of 5 stars 6FU - the title track.......2003-08-09

We came to the 13th episode of 6FU last night and lament that we'll have to wait a year before the next year come available.

It is brilliant, quite the most involving and challenging series currently in our ken. And whilst great entertainment series like "The Sopranos", and "Sex and the City" are, well, great entertainment, they don't involve you so completely and caringly in the characters the way 6FU does.

One of the wonderful Duke Ellington numbers in the boxed anthology from France that I have, has the occasional track prefaced by the great man introducing it. Sometimes there is a little anecdote, as in the case of a particularly nice number called "The Tattoed Lady". With his usual insouciant charm, Ellington explains that the lady was tattooed all over, not with pictures or words or things but with a series of zig-zag lines, each like a W.

The letter W has four strokes, and so he transcribed those four strokes into four notes ( and here he played the four notes). These four notes of course have different timbres, and different qualities. And naturally they gain different feelings depending on the instrument that plays them of course (and here, several instruments took it in turn playing the four notes. Then DE said that they had great fun using these four notes as the basic theme for the following music. And the band played "The Tattoed Lady".

I wondered whether the same idea had hit the fellow who composed the brilliant and stunningly original 6FU theme. There are four central characters, and the calibre and timbre of the note assigned to each reflects their characters - fragile, defiant, cool, conservative... Once I remembered Duke Ellington's introduction to the origins of the "Tattooed Lady" theme lady theme, it never escaped me every time we watched an episode. Of course the tagged on two or three notes were Brenda and Keith... and father.

5 out of 5 stars Laughs Galore.......2005-08-19

"Six Strong Guys" is a hilarious romp with guys who form a suicide pact. All sorts of delightful subplots interweave in & out. Of particular note is Andy Hui who was excellent as the doctor in "Koma." Here his comic skills highlight what a versatile actor he is. You might not think 6 guys trying to commit suicide by jumping off a skyscraper is the basis for a hilarious comedy, but it is. George Lam's fast-paced direction suits this script that has wit, style, and laughs galore, even with English subtitles. Certainly, this is one DVD to enjoy for all who appreciate the new wave of Asian cinema. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars You don't know what you are missing.......2005-05-19

This movie was brilliant. Four friends in completely different situations decide form a split second suicide pact. They have three hours to tie up loose ends and then they will jump off of a building, but when someone else attempts this feat before them, they decide not to do it. There is everyone from a vein hairstylist who is deathly afraid of being ordinary, to a player that realizes that he has fathered a child to one of countless women he's slept with; you start to learn that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Then the movie takes you into their lives and really lets you feel what it's like to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. This is a comedy that breaks through language and geographical barriers.

1 out of 5 stars For Those Who Like Trash.......2005-02-21

One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Having said that, "The Black Six" (a joke gift from a goofy friend), is fully enjoyable.

It looks like it was shot in a couple of days using bits and pieces of discarded scripts that had been haphazardly glued together.

The best part is watching these football legends (and they are legends, 4 of them are in the Hall of Fame) act.

Of particular interest is the hilarious method that Lem Barney uses to quell his opponents. Lem (who I don't think had one line in the movie) practices a type of martial arts that can be described as "Statue Fu").

He leans forward and places his foot on the chest of an opponent. That's it, and that seems to be enough to immobilize the opponent.

Other great awful scenes abound.

Of particular interest for Football fans is watching Carl eller in scenes where he is shirtless. Eller was considered a big man at the time and at 6' 4" and about 250, he is an impressive specimen. But 30 years later, there are wide receivers with those measurements. He would be about 80 pounds too light to make it in today's NFL.

Maybe the "Black 6" should have been chasing steroid dealers instead of southern racists.

Wonder if it's too late for a sequel?

1 out of 5 stars Blaxploitation Fumble.......2004-12-25

Football players don't always make great thespians, but sometimes players will try their hand at the big screen. In 1974, six of the biggest stars of the NFL appeared in "The Black 6." San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Gene Washington stars as Bubba Daniels, a Vietnam veteran home from his tour of duty, making up for lost time with his five closest friends from the Army. They are Jr. Bro Williams (Carl Eller), Bookie Garrett (Mercury Morris), Frenchy LaBoise (Lem Barney), Tommy Bunka (Willie Lanier), and Kevin Washington (Joe Greene). One day, after completing some work on a farm with his buddies, Bubba checks his general delivery box, and learns that his brother Eddie (Robert Howard) has been killed. Moose King (John Isenberger), the leader of a motorcycle gang in Bubba's home town, killed Eddie because Eddie became involved with Moose's sister, Jenny (Cynthia Daly).

Bubba comes home to get answers and justice. The police and most of the locals know that the motorcycle gang had some involvement, but nobody's willing to challenge the gang's alibi that they were out of town when Eddie died. The only people who are willing to help are an old barfly and Ceal (Rosalind Miles), Bubba's old girlfriend who started turning tricks when Bubba didn't come straight home from the service. With their help, Bubba goes to the biker bar where Moose and his gang frequent, and Jenny works as a waitress. Bubba and Moose nearly settle the score in the bar, but the police break up the confrontation and advise everyone to leave unless they want to get arrested. That gives Moose time to meet with Thor (Ben Davidson), the leader of another local motorcycle gang, for help in dealing with Bubba on a permanent basis. Bubba's friends, concerned for their friend's safety, come to town to provide muscle for Bubba. Thus, the stage is set for the predictable showdown between the gangs and the Black 6, with equally predictable results.

First, let me give you the bad news about "The Black 6." There isn't a single credible performance in this movie. In addition to The Black 6, Moose, and Thor, several other pro football players and baseball great Maury Wills make equally thankless appearances. Neither writer George Theakos nor director Matt Cimber try to give any dimension to any character besides Bubba. The music by David Moskoe is a poor imitation of Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" score. The title song says the guys don't look for trouble, yet it also says they love "ladies, bikes, and fighting." That confusion never ends. The climactic fight scene is horribly lit, making it impossible to distinguish the good guys from the bad. When Moose's gang is killed by The Black 6, Thor's gang decides to burn them to death with road flares. The Black 6 throw them back with hits that cause bikers to burn, and their bikes to explode. The rest of the bikers get wiped out when their attempt to play kamikaze fails.

Now here's even worse news about the film. It's as dismissive of black people as it is of whites. Most blacks are dismissed as drunks, gamblers, and hustlers, and most whites are dismissed as hateful of non-whites. The more "The Black 6" dwelled on these traits, the more vile I found the film. Thankfully, I only had to endure this filth for only about 85 minutes. The only thing that trumps the ineptitude of the film in general is its misguided, misanthropic view of human beings. I had low expectations for this DVD, but I don't want my $4 curiosity investment to make me feel as repulsed as this movie did. The movie ends with this ominous warning: "Hassle a brother...and the Black 6 will return."

"The Black 6" makes Fred Williamson films look like high art in comparison - and both cost the same price. "The Black 6" is one of the worst movie experiences I've ever had. Avoid this film, even at its cost. Nothing good will come of viewing it. This isn't just blaxploitation. This is total exploitation. Shame on the filmmakers.

3 out of 5 stars Joe Greene---one of the best.......2006-02-14

Big Ben: 27-4 as a starter (2004-2005 seasons)---only losses (3 of which were injury-related): Patriots, 2004 AFC Championship game (if Plax holds on to sure TD pass, we are only down 7 with about 7+ minutes to go in that game; Ben did some good things and was battling thumb and toe injuries) and also in 2005 (if Randle El doesn't get `cute' and lateral that pass to Ward, we probably win; again, Ben did some good things), as well as the Bengals in 2005 (Ben has beaten Carson Palmer's Bengals 3 times: twice in 2004 and big-time in the AFC Wild-Card game in 2005; Ben had 3 TD passes in this lone defeat and was battling a thumb injury) and Indy in 2005 (as we know, he got revenge in the AFC Divisional Playoff game; Ben threw a TD pass to Ward in this Monday night defeat and was coming off an injury-induced layoff).

Ben's FIRST NFL game: 2004 Pre-season at Ford Field vs. the Lions...last game of 2005 season: 2/5/06 at FORD FIELD, SUPER BOWL XL VICTORY!!!

So Ben didn't play a superb game in Super Bowl XL and there was some controversy...

--Super Bowl IX, 1/12/75: Steelers win 16-6 over the Vikings---Future Hall-of-Famer Terry Bradshaw is only 9 for 14 for 96 yards...BEN WAS 9 FOR 21 FOR 123 YARDS...Bradshaw threw a lone TD...BEN RAN FOR A LONE TD... Future Hall-of-Famer Fran Tarkenton's numbers were putrid: 11 for 26 for 102 yards, 3 interceptions, NO TD's! We were only winning 2-0 going into the third quarter (on a safety); a boring game. The Steelers wore their white shirts and Terry had a beard (the other 3 Super Bowls: black-and-gold shirts, Terry clean shaven)...WE WORE OUR WHITE SHIRTS IN XL AND BEN HAD A BEARD...the game turned on a VERY controversial "fumble-that-wasn't" by the Steelers Larry Brown: the Steelers left the field dejected, the Vikings were in prime territory...then the officials ruled Brown was down before the ball came loose (no way!!!!!)...and the rest is history;

--Super Bowl X, 1/18/76: Steelers win 21-17 over the Cowboys---Future Hall-of-Famer Roger Staubach almost pulled out another miracle comeback...Swann's great falling-to-the-ground acrobatic catch led to no points (!);

--Super Bowl XIII, 1/21/79: Steelers win 35-31 over the Cowboys---the Cowboys' Jackie Smith drops a SURE TD pass that would have tied the game AND our go-ahead TD was aided by a very controversial tripping penalty that cost Dallas 33 yards: Lynn Swann fell over Benny Barnes's ankles and, as Bradshaw has admitted, it shouldn't have been a flag...we were ahead 35-17 at one point...Staubach almost brought them back (35-31);

--GAME BEFORE SUPERBOWL XIV: AFC Championship game vs. the Oilers, 1/6/80: Steelers win 27-13---late in the third quarter, officials ruled that Oilers receiver Mike Renfro did not have possession of what appeared to be a game-tying TD (WRONG!!!! He was in bounds; bad, bad call)...and the rest is history...

---Super Bowl XIV, 1/20/80: Steelers win 31-19 over the Rams---Bradshaw threw 3 INTERCEPTIONS and we were losing for most of the game...until Lambert saved our butts by intercepting QB Vince Ferragamo's pass...and the rest is history
(Steelers in the 1970's: regular season---99-44-1; playoffs: 14-4)

NON-STEELER SUPER BOWL "LUCK"---
Super Bowl XXV, 1/27/91: Giants defeat Bills BECAUSE SCOTT NORWOOD BARELY MISSES A RELATIVELY EASY FIELD GOAL, one of the biggest blown plays ever!;
All 3 of the Patriots victories were by exactly 3 points...and the Eagles really blew it with poor clock management (sound familiar?)!;
Super Bowl XXXIV, 1/30/00: Rams defeat Titans, 23-16--- The Rams' Mike Jones tackled Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired. Dyson would have tied the game; Super Bowl V, 1/17/71: Colts beat Cowboys, 16-13, via a field goal... Dallas' Chuck Howley, who picked off two passes, became the first defensive player and the first player from a losing team to be named MVP.

The Steelers have been in the Super Bowl in the 1970's. 1980's, 1990's, and in the new millennium (2000's)---
IX (1975), X (1976), XIII (1979), XIV (played in 1980), XXX (played in 1996), XL (2006)

Big Ben---ONLY QB to ever go to Championship game his first two years; youngest to win the Super Bowl (Steelers: first 6th seed to go/ win; only team to beat #1, #2, and #3 seeds on the road and win; three-way tie for most Super Bowl victories: 5, along with Dallas and San Francisco; tied for second with most Super Bowl appearances: 6, along with Denver [who have `only' won 2])...comparison to other Hall-of-Fame and/or outstanding QBs---
Jim Kelly: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
Fran Tarkenton: 0 for 4; never won a Super Bowl;
Dan Marino: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl;
Kenny Anderson: 0 for 1; never won a Super Bowl
Len Dawson: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Johnny Unitas: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Joe Theismann: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Brett Favre: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Kurt Warner: won one Super Bowl (and lost one, as well);
Ken Stabler: won one Super Bowl
Joe Namath: won one Super Bowl;
Phil Simms: won one Super Bowl;
Steve Young: won one Super Bowl;
Also: John Elway: after FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE LEAGUE, won two...after losing 3 very badly!

BEST run in sports history (as confirmed by a Congressional resolution!): won 8 in a row---
Bears (who had an 8-game winning streak), Vikings on the road (who had a 6 game winning streak...and Cowher NEVER won in a dome stadium before!), Browns on the road, and Detroit on 1/1/06 (where, unbeknownst to us at the time, we were headed for 2/5/06!); Bengals on the road (#3 seed, previously beat us), Colts on the road (#1 seed, league's best record, heavily favored, dome stadium, previously beat us; the Fumble, the Tackle, and the Miss), Broncos on the road (#2 seed, favored, 10-0 at home)...and the #1 NFC seeded Seahawks "on the road" in another dome, Detroit's Ford Field (where Big Ben started his NFL career vs. the Lions in the 2004 pre-season!!!)

YOU HAVE TO GET THE TWO-DVD SET "STEELERS: THE COMPLETE HISTORY" (2005; NFL Films), 1933-2004 (too bad they didn't wait a year haha!)---the main feature is 2 hours and 20 minutes long and covers 1933 up to and including Beg Ben's 2004 season; incredible. All the `lean years' (1930's-1960's; 1980's) are covered, NOT just the "glory seasons"---Kordell, Brister, Malone, Stoudt, Hanratty, etc. etc. etc. The bonus feautures are awesome, ESPECIALLY the 45-minute Jerome Bettis special-VERY IRONIC!! You will see Tommy Maddox with the Bus when they were both Rams in 1995...excellent miked-on-the-field comments, often funny, by Bus, Ward, and Cowher...Jan. 2005 AFC lowlights, Hines Ward crying, Jerome's reaction, and the tantalizing hint that Super Bowl XL wil be played in Jerome's hometown of Detroit...which makes what they did in 2005/2006 VERY story book! Also: the Bill Cowher, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Myron Cope, Dick Hoak, and Bill Saul segments/ specials are very entertaining, as is the Super Bowl XIII feature..get this...as well as the SUPER BOWL XL DVD---2005 season highlights included, as well as the 2006 playoffs!

5 out of 5 stars If God Were A Movie...........2005-04-12

The Black Six is a masterpiece. Not only does it capture the spirit of an era, it brings the viewer back to a time when bike gangs roamed the open road and trouble was just a hate-crime away. With a soundtrack to be envied and special effects that will leave you in awe, The Black Six is all you could ever hope for in a movie. With lessons about love, life, and the nature of change, The Black Six is the end-all be-all of Blackxploitation films. I loved it.
