This collection of satirical sketches about television was released in 1974, the heyday of obvious pop-culture humor along the lines Cheech and Chong. With Saturday Night Live still a few years away, Chevy Chase made an appearance here, and one can see the acute sensibility that would redefine television comedy in its early form. Some of the gags work well but most are pretty dispensable; some are a bit crude. On the plus side, it's nice to see Richard Belzer (from TV's Homicide) in his sharp-tongued, formative stage. While not brilliant, the film did serve as one influence on the rise of ironic humor in the '70s. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars A little dated but still has its moments.......2007-04-04

I first saw this movie when I was in college in the mid 1970s. It was pretty radical for its time as it predated the original Saturday Night Live. It is made up of a number of individual bits, most of which were topical at the time. There are references to 2001 A Space Odyssey, the Watergate hearings, Vietnam, counterculture drug dealers, etc. and features the first screen appearances of Chevy Chase and Richard Belzer.
If you are nostalgic for those times and willing to suffer some misses along with the real laughs, this movie is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Take It For What It Is.......2007-03-12

The movie was made quickly and "spontaneously," so it is not as slick as you might have come to expect from a full-out "movie."

That being said, for those who can remember what TV was like in the 1960s, this movie is a classic. And you get to see really funny samples of comedic talents when they were really young, such as Richard Belzer and Chevy Chase.

Loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Feed Your Head.......2007-02-25

I'll probably revise this later because it's been many years since I saw this. But back in the 70's this was a late night and drive in favorite. Like I said I haven't seen it for many years and I'm guessing that it's probably not as funny as it used to be afer a few tokes, but I think it'll still be worth a watch because this was the beginning of the kind of humor we found later in SNL. Much of the humor is subtle and can easily go over your head if you're not aware of what's going on, but if you are then there's a lot of fun here. In fact I still remember having to take a second look at the end VD talk to realize what that puppet actually was...It was the absurdity that made it so funny....

4 out of 5 stars How fun was the 70's?.......2007-01-18

Fun movie, some of the bits run a little long, but overall entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Funny movie, terrible DVD transfer.......2006-05-12

A lot of the skits are dated but the non-dated stuff is hilarious. Unless you are a baby boomer you won't get the dated jokes, unless you know about Pop culture of the early 70's. The DVD video quality is awful though, they could have did a better transfer. The video is dull and grainy. Its also a Pan & Scan 4:3 ratio! What happened to the widescreen??

2 out of 5 stars Flashy action thriller derailed by logic-challenged screen writin.......2007-04-06

While I can't highly recommend it, TUBE is kind of fun, provided you don't think too much about the plot, which has a walking stereotype loose-canon cop (Kim Seok-hoon) battling a terrorist (Pak Sang-min) onboard a hijacked subway train. The terrorist is a former government eraser that the government tried, but failed, to erase, and he's taken the train, and Seoul's mayor, hostage to uhh, well, to apparently have the plan be doomed from the start.

Equal parts SPEED, TAKING OF PELHAM 123, MONEY TRAIN and DIE HARD, the film has few pretensions, which make it easy on the derriere. Poor Bae Doo-na gets one of the stranger film roles in film history, as a pickpocket who apparently knows she must LOVE the hero even before she KNOWS the hero, and creates all the necessary Korean histrionics along the way (as well as almost bearing more physical brutality than the hero!) while our glowering protagonist poses with a series of unlit cigarettes in his mouth (and which only one person will ever be allowed to light, care to guess who?).

The SPEED and TAKING OF PELHAM allusions are apt, as are slight nods to MONEY TRAIN (the hero's boss does his best crazy Robert Blake impersonation) and DIE HARD (or UNDER SIEGE 2 if you'd rather, since it's so blatantly name-checked on the U.S. package), but overall it's a victim of it's own weak (and often downright ridiculous) logic and begs a few too many questions.

Production wise, though, it's delivers the goods, with slick production values all the way, with some nicely handled chase and fight scenes. Turns out, if I read the docu-stuff on the Korean 2-disc set correctly, that the Korean subway trains don't even look as hi-tech as they do here, and the ones in the film were almost entirely CG apart from the sets for close-ups! Columbia Tri-Star's sleeve is highly reminiscent of the art for TRANSPORTER and, not entirely unexpectedly, substitutes a generic Asian face for that of star Kim Seok-hoon. Nice.

4 out of 5 stars Korean action flick makes good entertainment........2006-04-30

I read so many bad comments that I had to watch this again. I still liked it the second time. Not an A film, just a B action with great suspense elements. This is actually better than Speed in some aspects- mainly less two dimensional with the characters (I mean these are better developed). Speed was a slicker product, and I really liked it too. Tube is Korean with a capital K. Made for Koreans. So of course not all American action film fans will like this much. They just make movies differently than Hollywood. I don't buy this as a pure imitation at all- not even very close. This film maker-director is so good at his craft, even his mediocre film (like maybe this one compared to his previous). is quite good. It did have a few slow, and a few really corny places. So I prefer to give it 3 1/2 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Untidy.......2005-01-17

This movie is literally a pared down version of "Speed". Instead of a runaway bus, we have a runaway subway instead. In order to cater to the mass (both males & females), a love interest is added to spice things up. Then, to unease the tension, a comedian is added into the ensemble (which really doesn't add anything to the movie whatsoever). So as to have the audience emphatise for the trapped and unfortunate passengers, we have a newly wed loving couple whose husband is the subway controller and who in the end has to choose to obey the instruction to guide the subway to its demise or to do otherwise. Every movie needs to have a "baddie" to hate and that comes in the form of a cowardice passenger who would do everything to satisfy the hostage takers (reminding you of the same person in "Die Hard"?) This movie wants us not to hate T. Rather, audience is brought to the attention of the motivation of why he's committing such an act. Naturally, a violent act in order to undo another violent act is questionable. Then, there's the hero character, who's a Bruce Willis pretender rather than Keanu Reeves pretender. He's a loose cannon but I'm certain that all audience would be baffled by the ending. His bravado is totally not justified. Rather than feeling sympathy for him, I'm sure all of you are going to exclaim, "What the..?" The Director endeavours to address about a real situation in South Korea where a special commando team is trained to do dirty deeds for the Government but in the end, they are wiped out by the authority that trained them at the first place. However, this year in South Korea, another drama movie is created to address this incident more specifically and if memory serves me correctly, it becomes one of the highest grossest movie there to date. Anyway, this movie is filled with individual brilliances but the overall feeling of the movie is too patchy and the plots have spread too thin to the extent that it loses its flavour. One thing about this DVD is that the characters are adlibbed in English and that frustrates someone like myself who's looking for original flavour. The making of the movie is passable, the music video clip and the trailer are the better parts of the DVD. Anyway, commendable effort but in terms of action movies, United States simply has far too much resources to be beatable. Besides, as Jerry Bruckheimer steps into the TV arena, audience expectation has elevated yet another notch. What used to be deemed superb ten years ago such as "Speed", "Die Hard", "Lethal Weapon" simply don't cut the cake anymore these days. Well, audience is better off spending their precious two hours elsewhere especially if they have high expectations.

2 out of 5 stars Korean 'Speed'?: So Many Borrowed Ideas Cooked Awfully.......2004-11-17

'Tube' borrows so many things so obviously that it looks like 'Let's spot it' pop quiz. Some call it Korean 'Speed'; I call is a hybrid of 'Speed ' and one neglected classic 'The Taking of Pelham One, Two ,Three.' But it comes with awful results now.

Terrorists lead by 'T' (Park Sang-min) hijack the subway full of passangers in Seoul in plain daylight; a fearless detective Jay (Kim Seak Hun) and a lonely girl Kay (Bae Du-na) who loves him are confined in the subway train that rushes at the speed of 140 km.p.h. Now what will this unconventional cop do?

It's a promising set-up for actioner, and this Korean film tries to show that Asian film industry can do better than 'Speed'; or at least, as good as that. Sorry, but despite some stylish actions and interesting locales, 'Tube' is in fact a very disappointing piece, with the inconsistent story and overblown emotions. See, for example, that at one time the train is so crowded that the cop cannot move; then, after some actions, the same train looks totally deserted (and it did not stop). And this cop is such a daredevil-type that he can jump onto the train (that runs like a car on highway) more than once, and still can gun down the terrorist while the whole SWAT team cannot even touch the hijackers.

There are many, many incredible situations -- incredible, I say, even considering the nature of the film -- which make the film quite ridiculous for action film buffs. The subway is controlled by computers, they say. But the men in the control room cannot even stop the train because of some very vaguely shown device the terrorists prepared. None of them seems to think about the easier way to stop the 'electric' train while they talk aboy ATS or something.

The ending might surprise the Western viewers. Actually, it is one of the cliched pattern of Korean films, and if you have seen 'Shiri' you know what I mean. It is way too contrived in order to make it 'touching.' I know intention, but it is so awfully carried out.

Korean films are now the power to be reckoned with, I know, but 'Tube' is not the place to prove that. Only Bae Du-na ('Take Care of My Cat') has something that tells she is going to be a bigger star than she is now. As to the rest of the film, all I can say is forget about it -- it is way too brainless.

2 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE KOREAN ACTION FILM.......2004-10-31

A FORMER GOVERNMENT AGENT HOLDS A TRAIN HOSTAGE WITH A BOMB THAT'LL BLOW UP IF THE TRAIN STOPS AND IT'S UP TO A DETECTIVE TO STOP HIM AND FIND A WAY TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE PASSENGERS. WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS BASICALLY ANOTHER IMITATION OF ''SPEED''. THE DIALOGUE IS LAUGHABLE AND THE ACTION [WHICH THERE IS PLENTY OF] IS NOT REALLY THAT ENTERTAINING. THE ACTING IS ALSO PRETTY BAD, BUT THE MOVIE TENDS TO SHOW A FEW SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE LAST 30 MINUTES. IF YOU'RE AN ACTION FAN [LIKE ME] AND YOU'RE CURIOUS ABOUT THIS MOVIE, RENT IT. BUT DON'T BUY IT. ON THIS DVD, YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF WATCHING THIS MOVIE DUBBED IN EITHER ENGLISH OR FRENCH OR YOU CAN WATCH THIS MOVIE IN ITS ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, WHICH IS KOREAN.

Save $$$ on Motorcycle maintenance! Let a professional show you how to maintain your bike with our latest, easy to follow and comprehensive maintenance DVD. Maintenance needs to be performed regularly to keep your bike operating safely and in top condition. Interpreting the service manual can be overwhelming if you're new to wrenching. Taking the bike to a shop is a hassle; it's costly and probably unnecessary. The cost of the parts and supplies is relatively inexpensive compared to the shop labor. Wouldn't't it be nice if you could do it yourself with confidence just like the pro's do? This DVD covers maintenance procedures that you should do several times a year. You would pay a shop around $150 in labor each time they serviced your bike. We'll show you how to maintain it yourself for a fraction of one service charge. You'll learn how to: Change the oil and oil filter, Clean and lubricate the air filter, Lube the throttle cables and brake cables, Check and adjust the spokes, Replace the chain and sprockets and set the chain tension properly, Check the wheel bearings and seals, Inspect the swing arm bearings, Change the rear tire & install the wheel, Change the Brake Pads and Bleed/flush the brake fluid. We use several makes/models of bikes in the DVD to demonstrate the differences between procedures on each bike. We'll show you how to maintain your bike in your garage with minimal special tools. The mechanic speaks slowly so you can watch the video and take notes if you like. Unlike most maintenance videos that focus on the actor, this video is shot at close range so you can see the details. You can see each part through disassembly and reassembly. No steps are skipped.

As a visual learner, and cautious person in general, I've been hesitant to really get inside an amp to replace components, even after reading all about how to do it on web forums and books.

Combining the 'book' knowledge I've gained, with actually being able to see Gerald at work in this dvd, I have much more confidence in my personal safety and ability to perform basic work on my amps.

This is a logically indexed and fascinating collection of Gerald's videos that completely takes the mystery out of questions like "How EXACTLY do I measure voltage on a live amp?" and "How EXACTLY does one safely discharge a filter capacitor?" for a beginner like me. There are also advanced topics for those that can perform the basics half-drunk with their eyes closed.

Gerald is a controversial figure in the guitar and amp world of big egos and names, and "who knows the most tube theory", but I appreciate the knowledge of old Fender and Marshalls that he shares in this dvd. Worth the price of admission to me.

For centuries, the prospect of conceiving a human being in a laboratory seemed ripped from the pages of science fiction. Then, in 1978, everything changed. This documentary tells the story of doctors, researchers, and hopeful couples who pushed the limits of science and triggered a technological revolution in human reproduction. In so doing, they landed at the center of a controversy whose reverberations continue to this day.

      3 out of 5 stars Informative!.......2006-11-15

I had no knowledge whatsoever about the history of IVF, so I couldn't be critical of this documentary generally. I am glad that the documentary makers decided that IVF need ed to be a part of the "American Experience."

From one baby in the late 1970s, now 2.5 million people worldwide owe their lives to IVF. Because this procedure lacks controversy now, to some, this work may seem dated. However, this settled debate may remind many nowadays of the controversy over stem cell research. This documentary suggests that the US and Britain were in a race to see who could successfully perform IVF first; this reminded me of the race in AIDS research between the US and France, as described in "And the Band Played On."

This film repeatedly spoke about couples who wanted children, but oftentimes, individuals were interviewed separately. I wonder if many of the interviewed couples have divorced since they requested IVF.

I guess I have one critique. Issues of class were not brought up. I hear IVF is still INCREDIBLY expensive. I assume that only rich couples have it as an option though the procedure is available. If the documentary makers wanted to be thorough, they would have brought this up.

4 out of 5 stars A Freak By Any Other Name.......2004-08-19

It seems the bottom has fallen out of the freak market. If you discount Liza Menelli and Courtney Love, most human oddities are now hidden away in cozy asylums or at least given their own nationally sponsored telethons. In modern America when people want to explore some prurient desire to be scandalized, stunned, titillated or appalled, they turn to either talk radio or pornography. Porn is the new freak show...(and we thought it was shocking to see the geek put a snake in his mouth!?).
One guy who does attempt to hold his `Freak Flag High `is Jim Rose and the Jim Rose Circus. It's a modern day freak/burlesque show with Jim as the big mouth hawker. The Circus has a cast of characters ranging from the totally tattooed Puzzle Man to The Amazing Lift-O, a guy who manages to dead-lift incredible weights with an entirely different muscle system (!). They perform allot of the standard Mid-way gimmicks but with a new flare or twist. GrinderGirl is one of my favorite artisans... she appears in a steal corset and then attacks herself with an industrial grinder. Needless to say, sparks fly everywhere!!! Sophisticated adult fun! Not for anyone with low tolerence for the extreme.

4 out of 5 stars "Uplifting" and "penetrating" performance art from "within".......2004-08-14

I guess I won't need to explain the title of my review to those of you familiar with Jim Rose and friends (or freaks would be more apt.)
I first heard about the Jim Rose Circus maybe seven years ago when they featured on a news item due to controversy over some of their content. I vividly remember Lifto doing his "swing" for Paul Holmes. And at that precise moment I though, wow, this is pretty cool.
Though I'm among those who have never witnessed The Jim Rose Circus live, this DVD is almost the next best thing. Taped in 1993 and running for barely 50 minutes (this is in Australia & NZ- it's safe to presume some of it was cut. Dab nab it!
Of course those of you who have read Rose's highly entertaining autobiography "Freak Like Me", or seen them live will know that Rose always opens each performance with the line. "You look like a jaded f***!"
It's odd to note that considering the circus's obviously anti-censorship bent that Lifto swings his tackle from behind a blanket. (Personally I'm thankful that by renting this was. I didn't pay four bucks to see some bloke's winkie. And no, the "fire" act isn't on here- unless the censors cut it out. Personally I reckon if impressionable people are dumb enough to maim themselves after watching this then its their own stupid fault, not Rose's. Though it's annoying having to listen to Rose's rambling ringmaster commentary during the performances. It made me wonder if he spends his leisure time huffing aerosol cans.
Things you can expect include the Torture King's "Meat skewer through the f***in' face!" which I found pretty boring; Matt The Tube brewing his own bile beer & members of the audience drinking it. Each to their own but there's no way in hell I'd do it. But if Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell and Al Whatsisface (is it Jorgenson? I can't remember) from Ministry sculled it- but that was at Lollapalooza, so it'd be safe to presume they were under the influence of a controlled substance. The entire spectacle is entertaining but not that shocking (I'm a jaded f***). They'd probably have to start introducing stuff like cannibalism (maybe that guy in Germany could join them?) or flaying or hacking off limbs to shock people. Or they could come to NZ & have Sue Bradford and Tariana Turia wrestling nude. Blerrrrgggghh! Oh gross, get me some mouthwash! Hwarf! Rest assured if you watch this DVD, there's nothing of that nature that will irreversibly scar the collective psyches of persons aged sixteen and over. Worth a look. Wimps, woofters and wowsers need not apply.

      4 out of 5 stars A True Freak.......2002-09-20

Nothing can compare to seeing the show live. The tape is about 1/4 of the live performance ... but still a MUST HAVE. This tape will open your eyes, as well as leave you a bit disturbed.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2001-11-21

This is a must have video!

It is disturbing, sick, gross and [....]!

Put the video in and be amazed. I have watched it many times and I am never bored. It's great for parties. Everyone will love you for it.

The show has changed over the years but this video is classic Jim Rose at his best.

        Description

The DVD features two unique presentations of the band. "Cattle And Bum" is an entertaining and creative film, constructed by the band themselves. A testament to the humour and energy that the band generated over a decade, the film contains live footage old & new, promos, interviews and plenty of silliness. A classic. "Live In Manchester" features an 'as it happened' record of the band at their most uncouth. This archive performance includes much previously unseen footage, as the 'Test Tubes' hurtle recklessly through their repertoire.

Uproarious Kel Mitchell brings severe comedy in this new form of entertainment, Kel Videos Live, combining sketch comedy and music for an experience you won't forget. In This Face Belongs on the Tube, Kel takes you on a comedic rollercoaster ride as he transforms into various musical artists starring in their own music videos. Known as the thin, hyperactive half of the Nickelodeon show Kenan and Kel, Cable Ace Award-winning Kel Mitchell also starred in All That and made his feature film debut in Good Burger.

5 out of 5 stars kel is still funny........2004-12-30

oh man, this dvd is sooooo funny. if are a fan of mad tv or wierd al, you have 2 buy this dvd! Kel does parodie-like videos of well known music artists like michael jackson(second dvd) and james brown;adding a really odd twist to it. Kel is still crazy, and this is probably his best work. this is a must buy for anyone...including the extremely depressed!
