Air America is one of those movies that could have been great, and now maintains its low-key reputation as a typical Mel Gibson film in the wake of his first two Lethal Weapon hits. Originally conceived as a biting black comedy about the CIA's top-secret smuggling operation in Laos during the Vietnam war, Air America lost most of its political sting when it was transformed into an action comedy for Gibson and costar Robert Downey Jr. The film is entertaining as far as it goes, with a few action sequences that explain where a lot of the budget went. If you're in the mood for some Mel, this one is a little off the beaten path, and still contains a percentage of its original potential. --Jeff Shannon

Classic 80s Movie.......2007-05-29

Sarcastic humor on top of a deep message about the American chapter of Viet Nam. I enjoyed the movie and Gibson and Downey delivered stellar performances. Really made you think how our government worked with other governments to deliver Holiday Inns (own and opperate).

Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. both in vintage form doing what they both do best - combing action and adventure with just the right amount dark humor. If you are a fan of either there is more than enough to keep you busy and it is well worth adding to your collection.

This is a good movie for the pilots in the family. Not especially for children after a certain age but has alot of action and is terribly funny. Would recommend to adults.

I tought that this movie was going to tell you the real secrets of Air Force One, but it only talks about the story of the airplane since Nixon, and then it just tells you that it is cassified everything about it, so not so many details. I didn't like it.

This is a great movie about the U.S president's official plane Air Force One or rightly called White House on wings. Covers the history of Air Force One as to how the need for an air travel was considered a must after the second world war as the head of states of the world usually avoided Air travel before world war 2. Shows the planes in complete details alongwith the interviews of some of the former Presidents of U.S and some of the Crew members of this amazing plane. Also covers some of the sad moments of history of mankind like the transport of Dead Body of the former president of U.S John Cannedy who was shot dead in 1963 and was carried back by Air force one and the next president took oath in the plane itself. Quite a sentimental and at the same time dutiful moment captured on film.

The movie tells about the routine of the flights and the jobs of the crew members in details and what weapons and accessories are carried alongwith the plane. All in all it's a must see for everyone who lives in this world and is in touch with the current events of the globe. Must make you feel envy about the fate of U.S presidents for possesing such an out of the world Air Plane.

As a big fan of military aviation with a solid background of electromagnetics, I am always expecting a film like this for each stealth aircraft and I think I've got one.

From the early history and experience of bombing to the design of stealth technology, this film goes through every detail. The explanation and illustration of the techniques, including stealth technology and aerodynamics, are without doubt the strength of this DVD. This is what impresses me most. For the stealth technology, I rate this film even better than "Stealth Technology" released by THC in 2006. Generally speaking, this film does a great job on technical explanation, simple and clear, so that it is very educative as well.

The bonus features of this DVD are also enjoyable and worth watching. They include 3D tour of B-2, slideshow, Whiteman AFB......etc. If you are a US citizen, you can even reserve a tour in Whiteman AFB!

In my opinion, this film is professionally made and it won't let you down.

This has been very delighful to watch for me and should be so for any person who is interested in military analysis. This DVD is designed especially for B-2 fans like me. It even contains "How to become a B-2 pilot" guide which although being very interesting is a pain for me cause I'm never gonna be one for about a hundred reasons...

Heaven v. Peter D. Carter.......2007-03-27

David Niven stars in 1946 British classic film, A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (US release originally titled STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN), where he plays a British RAF pilot, Peter D. Carter, who happens to fall in love with Kim Hunter (June), an American WAC, during the last battle of the European theater of World War II. Carter's plane is about to go down, and June is speaking to him over the radio hoping to keep his spirits up despite the imminent - death. However, Carter tests Heaven despite the fact that has his name on its roster.

Although the title may sound grim, A MATTER OF LIFE OF DEATH is not at all presented with that in mind. The film has a tongue-in-cheek quality with plenty of humor and satire. Indeed, there are displays of stereotypes and clash of cultures between the British and Americans that have existed since the British landing in the New World and the proceeding wars that occurred thereafter, but Directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger subtly and intelligently show examples of each respective group's culture through radio broadcasts, one has the voice of Winston Churchill and the other has Jazz blaring through the speakers, but are both counterbalanced with positive paradigms.

The interesting aspect of the film that interconnects history, literature, and philosophy and science. Before the war, Peter Carter studied at Oxford and specialized in European history. How fitting because his guide to heaven is the humorous character, Conductor 71 (Marius Goring), who may have been Voltaire, French literary critic and Philosopher known for his historical novel, CANDIDE, and imbibes the philosophical and scientific references to the film with his succint mention of the time and space continuum. In addition, when Carter is put on trial, the prosecuting counsel is Abraham Farlan (Raymond Massey), an officer in the Revolutionary War, who was hit by a British bullet during the battle at Lexington and Concord in 1775.

Overall, A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH speaks of the premise that love conquers all. Although somewhat romanticized and fictional, the film uses that stance with references to the historical past, and how the past may effect critical events in the present. In the case of Peter and June, the verdict was in their favor. So, for an enlightening and thought-provoking film with a little reference to history, this is the one to watch.

I've loved this movie since I was young and only would catch it from time to time when it came on tv. From a note somewhere in searching for it (maybe here, maybe another site), I did find the Time-Warner oldies version in DVD and it was great... and readily available (Region 1) for a reasonable DVD price. I'm not sure why that version is not sold here. It's funny how you see things years later and it's rather slow paced from my memory, but it still "got it". Really wonderful movie... should be up there with Casablanca and Robin Hood in those classics.

Careful, though this is one of the greatest films, it is NOT available for use in American DVD systems - only European. We have to wait for it to be issued for use in American DVD players. It is one of the most beautiful films ever made - one of the best movies ever.

Magical, whimsical, a true classic.......2006-03-06

I know a lot of my friends are probably going to be sick of me saying this - I'm not used to old "classic" movies, but I have to say I really enjoyed this one. Filmmakers Michael Powell and Emric Pressburger were told by the Ministry of Information to make a movie that would foster a British/US alliance after the War and establish the need for goodwill between the 2 nations, and they came up with this - a truly extraordinary fantasy/romance. A pilot, Peter Carter (David Niven) must justify his exsistance to a heavenly panel because he has made the mistake of falling for an American girl (Kim Hunter) when he really should have been dead after falling out of his plane without a parachute. Interestingly, the "heaven" sequences are black and white, while the "earth" sequences are in Technicolor.
The film is very touching and also very funny in the way it lampoons national stereotypes as the panel debates Niven's fate - the prosecution are led by a man from the 18th Century called Abraham Farlan (Raymond Massey), who presents "The sound of England in 1945" as boring cricket on the radio, but "The sound of America in 1945" as hip swing-band jazz.
Jack Cardiff's cinematography mixes black and white and colour, and I also liked the way the film played with time lapses and would freeze the action, something normally associated with science fiction rather than a romance.

I'm very pleased I saw this - what a superb film.

The most laughable war movie you'll ever see... BUY it for LAUGHS!.......2007-07-03

The premise is of a WWI veteran with his beautiful naive daughter (Inez Cooper) protecting a secret (oil) on an island in the South Pacific, along with some 'Hollywood' natives who look about as authentic as those on "Gilligan's Island" and that is being generous. An American and a GERMAN pilot engage in a dogfight and both crash on the island. The German pilot is so stiff and stereotyped, it's terrible - plus he is far too tall to even be a pilot... and his plane isn't even a German warplane - it was obviously American surplus. His 3rd Reich speech about taking over the Pacific islands is so laughable - GERMANS in the PACIFIC?

The dogfight scene lasts a whole two minutes and looks as if two kids had models on a string in slow motion... and in some close-up cockpit shots, the fighter plane on the rear screen projection is actually BIGGER than the plane in the foreground! There are some laughable fistfight scenes, also, to go along with the terrible dialog. There is a scene later in the movie with a Japanese transport plane the German radioed in that lands on the island as it MOWS over PALM TREES! Its wings actually cut them down for a landing strip! The ONLY saving grace of this film is the eye candy of Inez Cooper - so very sexy. The finale with the Japanese soldiers (from the transport), the allied inhabitants and the island natives which is reminiscent of a bad Cowboys and Indians film is a flat-out joke.

There are very few 'wings' in this film - the majority of this film is on LAND, all set on a Hollywood soundstaged island that even Gilligan would have been ashamed of with such poor rear screen backdrops and lighting - in fact, it's some of the worst film lighting I've ever seen. Sad to think that our troops in combat most likely viewed this film as it was released in 1943, during WWII - had to be embarrassing, I'm sure. It's a great laugh for a buck, though and again, the eye candy is not bad for its time.

A "C" or "D" grade movie.......2005-08-12

One of the worst "War" movies I have ever seen. A "German" fighter pilot shot down in the Pacific? Give me a break!

Created by veteran television writer/producer Philip DeGuere (Simon and Simon, JAG, NCIS), the syndicated action series Air America bore only a passing resemblance to the 1990 feature film starring Mel Gibson that shared its title, but definitely delivered small-screen action during its sole season of 1998-99. Lorenzo Lamas toplined the show as Rio Arnett, owner of and pilot for Air America, a transport airline that ferried all manner of passengers and goods--no questions asked--from a small and turbulent South American country. In reality, Rio and his partner Wiley (Scott Plank) were undercover agents, and used their company to tangle with various international bad guys on behalf of the State Department. The show's relatively low budget made for some less-than-spectacular scripts and special effects, but the prerequisite intrigue and mild sex appeal (thanks to co-stars Diana Barton and Lamas' real-life spouse, Shauna Sand Lamas), as well as nice turns by guest stars like Juliet Mills, John Beck, Richard Lynch, and Lamas' former Renegade co-star Branscombe Richmond (in "High Noon in Costa Perdida") made for an entertaining if undemanding hour of TV. The six-disc set includes all 22 episodes that aired on American television, as well as four that did not, including the original two-part pilot, "Betrayal" and "Safe Passage" (in the States, the series debuted with its third episode, "The Lost City"), and the two final episodes, "The Cure" and "The Miracle." This series was great was I was a teen. And honestly, I really like it yet today. The friendship between Rio and Wiley is wonderfully portrayed by the actors. All in all, two thumbs up.

Most hadn't worked in radio before and things quickly begin to unravel: Rhodes feels left out of the press coverage, while Maron feels the staff is incompetent. Then Ralph Nader hangs up on Rhodes and there's a scandal regarding airtime payments. What do their competitors think? Sean Hannity (FOX News) opines, "These people are not bright...they really are dull." This America Undercover documentary charts the long-anticipated rise, scandalous near-fall, and subsequent salvation of Air America Radio, a liberal radio network geared towards those whose opinions skew a bit more to the "Left of the Dial." Told through verite footage shot at the New York-based station over a nine-month period, the 90-minute film begins with a frenetic pace and never lets up from the network's evolution twelve days before and up to its March, 2004 launch, through a much-publicized scandal involving bounced checks that nearly ended the dream, it concludes with a disappointing 2004 election that spawned new resolve among the talent, staff and management of the station. The film provides revealing profiles of management and on-air talent, ranging from those with little or no past radio experience, to those with national fame (or notoriety). The latter includes noted TV satirist and author Al Franken, whose on-air inaugural words promise, "an end to the right-wing dominance of talk radio, a beginning of a battle for truth, a battle for justice, a battle indeed for America itself." Raw Footage of Radio's "LIMBAUGH FOR LEFTIES".......2007-06-03

This documentary has the feel of raw footage slapped together in an uncritical way. This overall effect is boring to those of us who do not have a Dittohead-like adoration of the superficial, mildly entertaining network that is Air America. There are some telling parts, such as showing Randi Rhodes YELLING at Ralph Nader in her usual unintelligent manner. We also see totally unprofessional managers, and uninformed on-air "talent" just floundering. As representative as all that is, LEFT OF THE DIAL does not show the more famous stupidity of the "talent" (e.g., Janeane Garofalo calling C.Rice a "house negro", Franken's regular misquoting of the the Duelfer Report, or the routine SCREAMING and name-calling of Mike Malloy), nonetheless the viewer understands why Air America is only for half-read Democratic Party loyalists and not for true anti-war or liberal activists. (Note how no Air America host has ever seriously mentioned what a hawk Sen. Hillary is, or the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998.)

I live in Europe where the process of semi-fascist radio and television programmes has not occurred (thank God), but as one who has more or less followed the careers of druggie Rush Limbaugh, shrieking terrorist Ann Coulter and the like, I often wondered why the left was so quiet. This documentary answers the question and shows what happened when Air America was first set up -- lots of hope, lots of talent ... but not lots of lefty money, and so the whole gig almost went belly-up just a few days after it went on air. This is a very interesting documentary film, and it is enriched, of course, by the delightful antics of Jeanne Garofolo and Al Franken. Loved this documentary!

This is an extremely entertaining film documenting the inept and corrupt "minds" behind Err America. I can't wait to get this on DVD so I can watch it with the pause button in hand so I can freeze it on the faces of socialists as they learn about the defeat of Kerry.

And a note to the soon-to-be-unemployeed Garofalo: if you people can't run a radio network (one that was partically funded by stealing cash from a children's charity BTW) then how do you expect us to believe you could run the country?

HBO's Sleight of Hand Doc.......2006-04-27

This "documentary" has the look and feel of THIS IS SPINAL TAP: the situations are absurd and the characters are ridiculous but there's a harsh feeling of reality to the proceedings.

The comedy here is the nonstop beating of these preening, arrogant "air personalities" who try to hold their lofty perches up while getting hit with horrendous business practices, battering reality checks ("John Kerry can still win this!"), and abyssmal ratings--all while sniping at who's getting better PR and bickering with their audience or co-workers or even their own family members.
I don't even know if the blokes from Spinal Tap would've soldiered on this long!

But leave it to HBO to put a "happy ending" on this othewise fascinating documentary. That even made me laugh outloud: after seeing the complete chaos of how Air America came into being, HBO shows a graphic of the USA and insinuates that the radio network is springing up all over the map and firmly taking root. I just read today that Air America's shares have fallen dramatically (Randi Rhodes is 25th in New York City) and I know they've been replaced by a Mexican mariachi station where I am in the West.
Was HBO's final graphic to this "documentary" meant to be part of the joke?

soros cannot support this forever, air america eventually has to survive on it's own. there are indications it's already on it's last legs. think what you want about limbaugh but he made it the hard way. he persevered and never gave up, after failing several times, and starving along the way. there were no millionaires to get him started. air america? manufactured entertainment with hysterical political opinion. how the left longs for the good old days of their idea of fair and balanced, with a cnn panel of three liberal's and one moderate conservative, and a liberal host, with the lone conservative being shouted down. fox has changed all that. I will miss listening to franken and his ilk go through their histrionics though.
