Air America is one of those movies that could have been great, and now maintains its low-key reputation as a typical Mel Gibson film in the wake of his first two Lethal Weapon hits. Originally conceived as a biting black comedy about the CIA's top-secret smuggling operation in Laos during the Vietnam war, Air America lost most of its political sting when it was transformed into an action comedy for Gibson and costar Robert Downey Jr. The film is entertaining as far as it goes, with a few action sequences that explain where a lot of the budget went. If you're in the mood for some Mel, this one is a little off the beaten path, and still contains a percentage of its original potential. --Jeff Shannon

The world's most exclusive airplane, a combination of a luxury hotel and a super-secret military command post, is profiled in this documentary produced by National Geographic. The history of presidential flight, from its beginnings with President Roosevelt making a secret wartime flight in 1943, is covered, and particular attention is appropriately given to the historic flight that returned President Kennedy's body to Washington after his assassination. Filmed in the closing months of the Clinton administration, the film features the preparation for a presidential trip, which includes close involvement of the military and antiterrorist specialists of the U.S. Secret Service. The makers of this highly informative film were given unprecedented access to Air Force One, and the footage of the presidential 747 is spectacular. --Robert J. McNamaraDescription

Briefed by the Ministry of Information to make a film that would foster Anglo-American relations in the post-war period, innovative filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger came up with A Matter of Life and Death, an extravagant and extraordinary fantasy in which David Niven stars as a downed pilot who must justify his continuing existence to a heavenly panel because he has made the mistake of falling in love with an American girl (Kim Hunter) when he really should have been dead. National stereotypes are lampooned as the angelic judges squabble over his fate. In a neat reversal of expectations, the Heaven sequences are black and white, while Earth is seen in Technicolor. Daring cinematography mixes monochrome and color, incorporates time-lapse images, and even toys with background "time freezes" 50 years before The Matrix. Roger Livesey and Raymond Massey lead the fine supporting cast. This is one of the undoubted jewels of British cinema. --Mark WalkerCustomer Reviews:

The drums of war are pounding in the distance, and American expatriate Jim Butler fears that the tiny South Pacific island he and his daughter Nona call home will soon be caught in the fray. The news of America's declaration of war against the Axis powers brings these fears to life, as a German and an American fighter plane crash-land on the island. Wary of drawing attention to Sunday Island, Jim refuses to let either pilot make radio contact with their respective combat units. With Lieutenant Alan Scott and Kurt Heimen essentially prisoners, Butler does his best to hide another secret that would make his home a prime asset for either side-the rich supply of oil on the island. Heimen discovers the oil, and turns to subterfuge and murder to alert his allies. Butler begins to see that choosing sides is inevitable if his South Pacific paradise is to remain free. Product Description
Meet Rio Arnett (Lorenzo Lamas), head honcho of Air America, a private transport company based in the Central American country of Buenaventura. In reality a top undercover agent for the CIA's Office of Strategic Implementation, Rio puts his life on the line in danger-filled assignments ranging from gunrunning and plutonium smuggling to kidnappings and rescue missions. Contains all 26 action-packed adventures -- including four episodes never before seen in the US!Amazon.com
Created by veteran television writer/producer Philip DeGuere (Simon and Simon, JAG, NCIS), the syndicated action series Air America bore only a passing resemblance to the 1990 feature film starring Mel Gibson that shared its title, but definitely delivered small-screen action during its sole season of 1998-99. Lorenzo Lamas toplined the show as Rio Arnett, owner of and pilot for Air America, a transport airline that ferried all manner of passengers and goods--no questions asked--from a small and turbulent South American country. In reality, Rio and his partner Wiley (Scott Plank) were undercover agents, and used their company to tangle with various international bad guys on behalf of the State Department. The show's relatively low budget made for some less-than-spectacular scripts and special effects, but the prerequisite intrigue and mild sex appeal (thanks to co-stars Diana Barton and Lamas' real-life spouse, Shauna Sand Lamas), as well as nice turns by guest stars like Juliet Mills, John Beck, Richard Lynch, and Lamas' former Renegade co-star Branscombe Richmond (in "High Noon in Costa Perdida") made for an entertaining if undemanding hour of TV. The six-disc set includes all 22 episodes that aired on American television, as well as four that did not, including the original two-part pilot, "Betrayal" and "Safe Passage" (in the States, the series debuted with its third episode, "The Lost City"), and the two final episodes, "The Cure" and "The Miracle." The DVD is presented in its original full-screen format, and, unfortunately, comes without any extras. --Paul GaitaCustomer Reviews:

Produced for HBO, Left of the Dial tracks the growing pains behind the nation's first liberal radio network. Longtime Michael Moore associates Patrick Farrelly and Kate O'Callaghan (The Awful Truth) take a "fair and balanced" fly-on-the-wall look at the major players behind and in front of the mic at Air America, established to "challenge the right wing dominance of talk radio." (Moore, surprisingly, turns out to be one of the venture's harshest critics.) The filmmakers began shooting 12 days prior to the March 2004 launch and kept going for the next few months. They start by aiming their cameras at Evan Cohen, the chairman, and David Goodfriend, the general counsel. Like the duo depicted in Startup.com, theirs isn't a partnership built to last. Other subjects include hosts Randi Rhodes, Marc Maron, Chuck D, Janeane Garofalo, and Al Franken. Most hadn't worked in radio before and things quickly begin to unravel: Rhodes feels left out of the press coverage, while Maron feels the staff is incompetent. Then Ralph Nader hangs up on Rhodes and there's a scandal regarding airtime payments. What do their competitors think? Sean Hannity (FOX News) opines, "These people are not bright...they really are dull." Fortunately, enough listeners felt otherwise that Air America eventually found their footing and grew out of that awkward stage. --Kathleen C. FennessyDescription
This America Undercover documentary charts the long-anticipated rise, scandalous near-fall, and subsequent salvation of Air America Radio, a liberal radio network geared towards those whose opinions skew a bit more to the "Left of the Dial." Told through verite footage shot at the New York-based station over a nine-month period, the 90-minute film begins with a frenetic pace and never lets up from the network's evolution twelve days before and up to its March, 2004 launch, through a much-publicized scandal involving bounced checks that nearly ended the dream, it concludes with a disappointing 2004 election that spawned new resolve among the talent, staff and management of the station. The film provides revealing profiles of management and on-air talent, ranging from those with little or no past radio experience, to those with national fame (or notoriety). The latter includes noted TV satirist and author Al Franken, whose on-air inaugural words promise, "an end to the right-wing dominance of talk radio, a beginning of a battle for truth, a battle for justice, a battle indeed for America itself." Wishful thinking?Customer Reviews:
