Artist-writer Katsuhiro Ôtomo began telling the story of Akira as a comic book series in 1982 but took a break from 1986 to 1988 to write, direct, supervise, and design this animated film version. Set in 2019, the film richly imagines the new metropolis of Neo-Tokyo, which is designed from huge buildings down to the smallest details of passing vehicles or police uniforms. Two disaffected orphan teenagers--slight, resentful Tetsuo and confident, breezy Kaneda--run with a biker gang, but trouble grows when Tetsuo start to resent the way Kaneda always has to rescue him. Meanwhile, a group of scientists, military men, and politicians wonder what to do with a collection of withered children who possess enormous psychic powers, especially the mysterious, rarely seen Akira, whose awakening might well have caused the end of the old world. Tetsuo is visited by the children, who trigger the growth of psychic and physical powers that might make him a superman or a supermonster. As befits a distillation of 1,318 pages of the story so far, Akira is overstuffed with character, incident, and detail. However, it piles up astonishing set pieces: the chases and shootouts (amazingly kinetic, amazingly bloody) benefit from minute cartoon detail that extends to the surprised or shocked faces of the tiniest extra; the Tetsuo monster alternately looks like a billion-gallon scrotal sac or a Tex Avery mutation of the monster from The Quatermass Experiment; and the finale--which combines flashbacks to more innocent days with a destruction of Neo City and the creation of a new universe--is one of the most mind-bending in all sci-fi cinema. --Kim Newman

Description

In 1988, the landmark Anime film AKIRA, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. By today's standards, Akira remains the pinnacle of cel animation and retains the explosive impact of its highly detailed animation and its intensely violent saga of power and corruption. Neo-Tokyo has risen from the ashes of World War III to become a dark and dangerous megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token control over the powerful military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the past. Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, unfortunately for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo's powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him! Nothing can stop the destructive forces that Tetsuo wields except possibly the last boy to destroy Tokyo. Insert: 1) Black BRC response card (regular version).

2) Todd McFarlane Toy Insert (limited to 300,000 total inserts) * Anime masterpiece first time ever on DVD for North American release! * Created and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. Special Features: * Digitally re-mastered including High Definition film transfer, High Definition restoration. * THX Certified * New English dialogue, new 5.1 mix (on the English audio only), scene access and more. * Disc 2 contains supplementary materials including "Akira" Production Report, "Sound Clip," director's interview, trailers, production materials, Restoration of "Akria", and "Akria" glossary. * Widescreen format (1:78) and enhanced for widescreen TV's (anamorphic). 5 out of 5 stars Astonishing........2007-05-14

I'm relatively young in the grand scope of things, but after growing up on all things animated and illustrated, I'm still blown away by Akira's graphics. The attention to detail and painfully meticulous artwork on this film holds a special place in the realm of anime and in my heart, especially in the context of when it was created. I was handed this DVD as a passing "la-dee-da you should watch this it's really good and trippy zomg" and didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised and very very very confused by the story. I had to watch it more than once to completely understand what was going on exactly, but after the second time it dawned on me that this was truly something special. Not only are the visuals stunning, but the story is complex and wonderfully laden with philosophical nuance. The movie covers about the first volume of the Akira manga. (Which is why it is so confusing in the first place; it only covers a fraction of the story!) I strongly advise reading the comic books at some point before (or after) viewing the film as it will prove to be a good read and a crucial supplment to Otomo's story.

5 out of 5 stars Akira.......2007-05-09

Akira should be on everyones top ten list. It has a great story and style.

5 out of 5 stars A haunting&horrific masterpiece.......2007-04-16

I had never seen anime before seeing the masterpiece that is "Akira." It's mind-blowing,in terms of plot, the quality of the animation, and the sheer complexity.

In short, the movie is about a biker named Tetsuo, who lives in the ruins of Neo-Tokyo with other teenaged gang members. One day,he comes upon a prematurely aged child named Akira. The government subjects Tetsuo to increasingly horrific tests that traumatize his mind, and he eventually lashes out at everyone around him.I won't give the ending away, since it's powerful, and will stay in your memory for a long time.

"Akira" is a marvel. It has the stuff of nightmares, but the beauty and perfection of its execution is the stuff of dreams.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Anime Film.......2007-04-12

It is 2019, 31 years after World War III, and the citizens of Neo Tokyo are plagued by crime, gangs, and terrorists. A teenager named Kaneda is the leader of his own motorcycle gang, and weakling member Tetsuo is one of his closest friends. On what seems like a typical night for the group, they find themselves in a high-speed battle with rival gang "The Clowns," but the night takes a frightening turn when they cross paths with a powerful, mysteriously aged child moments after his adult companion is gunned down in the street. Kaneda and his gang soon find themselves in the hands of the police, and Tetsuo, injured, is taken away by no less than the army. Tetsuo escapes from their clutches with the help of some newfound psychic powers, but when the gang is reunited, it's clear that their old friend is not well. Plagued by pain and hallucinations, not to mention years of frustration from always having to be rescued by Kaneda, Tetsuo is slowly becoming something no one can predict or trust. He is soon recaptured by the military, as Tetsuo has become a very important and dangerous part of the secret Project Akira. Meanwhile, Kaneda has troubles of his own. His attraction to a young girl he met at the police station has led him into the dark underworld of anti-government terrorism. It seems the new paths of Kaneda and Tetsuo are linked, though. When Tetsuo escapes again with thoughts of discovering the mysterious child called "Akira" on his mind, Kaneda decides he must try to save his friend once again, before his ever-growing powers completely overtake him.

"Akira" is one of those films anyone with even the slightest interest in Japanese animation, AKA Anime, has at least heard of. It's widely known as THE "must see" Anime film. One need only see the "Production Report" (making-of featurette) in this 2-disc Special Edition to understand why. The amount of work and attention to detail put into this animated feature is phenomenal! Katsuhiro Ôtomo explains in the featurette, and in the included interview, all that went into the production of the 1988 film, which is based on his comic series started in 1982. The film is a fascinating and dark tale of post-apocalyptic, urban survival and evolution. While not hard to follow, some details may feel left out here and there (perhaps to be found in the pages of the long running graphic work), and aspects of the ending can be seen as slightly unclear. However, the excellent production values, including the most fluid animation I've seen from Japan and the most widespread on the picture screen, along with Disney style pre-animation voice recording, heart-pounding action and music, excellent performances, and no fear in the violence and gore department, will likely please most viewers to no end! Akira is Anime eye-candy at its best, except for one crucial factor: No gorgeous, big-eyed schoolgirls! Oh, well. This DVD 2-disc Special Edition has so many extras, it's about to explode! In addition to the Production Report and creator/director interview, we get a thorough glossary, an unbelievably huge gallery, sound topic clips and restoration topic clips, and a load of trailers too! This DVD set is on par with and in some ways an improvement over the typical Disney Platinum Edition release of one of their films (and this is coming from a Disney fanatic). I WISH Disney's "making of" featurettes were like this one, showing the creators actually working on the film rather than the after-the-fact stuff Disney has been giving us lately. Presented here in widescreen with subtitle, dub, and original language options, and even a capsule info version, "Akira" is undoubtedly a must own for fans of Anime, but also for animation and film fans in general. It's not like your typical animated feature, and not even like your typical Anime feature. "Akira" is something all film fanatics must experience!

4 out of 5 stars Great but shouldn't have messed with the original dialog.......2007-03-04

Akira was my first anime movie and I've been hooked ever since; I'm always on the look out for good anime flicks. The version I saw was on VHS, with the original dialog. Had it on tape for a long time, but with the rise of dvd, I went and replaced all my VHS tapes with dvd's, including Akira. To say that I was disappointed watching it for the first time on dvd and hearing all the new english dialog is an understatement. All my favorite lines were gone. Yeah, the new lines kind of help flesh out the story more but man, it just wasn't the same movie I remember. As far as the story goes, I can see where people get confused with it, but that's what makes the movie interesting to me, trying to figure out whats going on. It's really not that convaluted as some people would like you to believe. The government has been doing experiements on people who have superhuman powers. One of these people, Akira, either by his own choice or through the governments experimenting, turned himself into pure energy and destroyed Tokyo in the process, as seen in the beginning of the film. Fast forward some years and we see that Neo-Tokyo has arisen from the ashes of the once great city. The city is in turmoil though, lawlessness is everywhere. Biker gangs seem to rule the streets, which the main characters are all a part of one. The government, fighting rebels and amongst itself it seems, is still conducting experiments (specifically the Army), now trying to find someone with the same potential as Akira, in the hopes of controlling this person and harnessing their power. Enter Tetsuo, who comes into contact with one of the test subjects as they are trying to escape. The government seizes Tetsuo and is soon doing tests on him. The tests release Tetsuo's inner abilities (that he must have been born with) but as the powers grow, he slowly loses his sanity and decides to fight back, against everyone. Eventually, he begins to lose control of the power within him and what follows towards the end of the movie is some of the most amazing and startling scenes ever produced. I don't want to give away any more details about the movie, but its great. Some say Akira is old, that it's not the classic many consider it, but Akira paved the way, in my opinion, for the anime film in America. Lots of great animes have come out since Akira, a few that could and can rival Akira in greatness; but none have that epic feel of size and scope like Akira. The animation itself is just as great if not better then ever. The visuals are still stunning. Overall though, the special edition is a huge disappointment. I give it four stars because the movie to me is great, but this new version with the new dialog, as a fan of the original, it's a let down. I've only watched it twice since buying it, its hard to sit through. Unless it gets re-released with the original dialog here in the states, I may have to wait a long while before I pop it in, so as to not compare it to the original. Of course, for anyone that hasn't seen it, the dialog change really shouldn't affect you at all and I hope you will come to love the movie like I do.

A lot has changed in the biker-movie genre since Hell's Angels on Wheels, and Torque may be the new benchmark of feverish chopper action. Martin Henderson plays Cary, a speed king and relatively civilized outlaw with a knack for annoying everyone, including drug smugglers, the FBI, an ex-girlfriend, and, worst of all, biker gang leader Trey (Ice Cube), who thinks Cary killed his brother. On the run from everyone, Cary survives by playing all sides against one another. But the story is less important than the frantic, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek action surrounding it. The Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz is responsible for this crazy, violent, yet appealingly sardonic cowboys-on-wheels piece. --Tom Keogh

Description

High-Speed Action Adventure. Biker Cary Ford (Martin Henderson) returns to his hometown to reunite with his girlfriend (Monet Mazur). Once home, Ford is framed for a murder he didn't commit, targeted for revenge by the victim's brother (Ice Cube) and pursued by the FBI as he tries to clear his name and outrace his enemies.

1 out of 5 stars An action-filled dialogue-deficient movie.......2007-03-14

I realize that this is one of those man movies that was never meant to make any sense and whose target demographic is fourteen-year-old boys. However, my canary in the coal mine in these situations is my husband. If he finds one of these films unwatchable, then it truly is bad, and not just so bad it is good. This was the case with "Torque". I tried to appreciate the stunts and the occasional humor that did work such as the truck from "Duel" still chasing Dennis Weaver after all these years, but it just can't compensate for a lame plot and dialogue that sounds like it was written by the reincarnation of Ed Wood. I think a somewhat rearranged quote from "Billy Madison", another silly man's movie that I actually enjoy if I'm in the mood for it, is most appropriate at this point: "At no point in your rambling, incoherent (movie) were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having (watched) it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

5 out of 5 stars A popcorn movie.......2006-11-17

I can see by the other reviews a lot of people are taking this movie way to seriously as a hardcore biker flick. It's just meant to be a fun movie with fast bikes. You can tell the directors are having fun with the movie by little things they throw in. Early in the movie you will see the car from the movie Duel being chased by the truck from the movie Duel which almost runs the bikers off the road. Also at the start of the movie when the street sign spins around it says "Cars Suck". Ice Cube plays the same sort of character he plays in almost every movie he does "angry gangster". The stunts are over the top, but they look cool! Hey it's just a movie sit back eat the popcorn and take it as such.

2 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2006-08-29

There were parts of this movie I found entertaining, but it's not something I would watch over and over again. Myself a biker, I can appreciate the "rush" they tried to give over and over again with the bike chases and stunts, but most of the stunts were so physically impossible that it ruined whatever credibility they could have had. (Yes, it is impossible to do a stoppie and simultaneously swing the bike around so the rear wheel, which is in the air, whacks someone next to you in the head then continue to ride at 160mph).

I agree this falls into the category of "Biker Boyz," if you liked that movie, you will probably like this one. But it isn't an improvement, and it's really missing originality when it comes to the plot. The acting isn't that bad, but when you don't have great dialogue to work with, there's only so much you can do to make it not look cheesy.

And yes, this movie does include the so-infamous-it's-almost-cliché line "I live my life one quarter-mile at a time."

2 out of 5 stars Action-Packed.......2006-07-26

Ice-Cube was great, as usual. The product placement was obscene (the fight between Shane and China when one was standing in front of a large Mountain Dew sign and the other in front of a large Pepsi sign). There were some visuals and effects worth watching and as stupid as the movie is in places, its stupidity changes tempo nicely and is really short. If its more than $5, pass on it.

1 out of 5 stars ????????????.......2006-07-03

There isn't a clear storyline. I felt ilke i had to solve a puzzle while watching this movie. I give it 1 star because at least the stuntmen\stuntwomen in this movie did their job well.

    3 out of 5 stars So-So documentary.......2007-03-19

Informative, But overpriced and not in- depth and complete according to other accounts. If you want to know about the HA, I would suggest reading Sonny Barger's book "Hells Angels".

    4 out of 5 stars Hell's Angels History.......2007-01-18

Great DVD, factual but would need to be updated a bit.
They really did do a good job in capturing the true American Hell's Angels story.

3 out of 5 stars Why so homogenous?.......2006-12-27

This work was informative. I learned when and how the motorcycle group formed. I learned that their symbol has a patent. The cable channel that produced this work is notorious for cheesy reenactments of historical events. They don't use those here because there is plenty of footage of actual bikers. I sympathize with their leader's, Sonny Barger's, struggle with throat cancer. Still, I think his difficulty speaking may help current smokers consider quitting before it's too late.

The documentary does say the group never lives up to others' expectations, be it hippies, federal prosecutors, or others. Still, I am disappointed how the documentary doesn't explain why the group seems to be composed entirely of white males. They show women as the bikers' girlfriends, but not as members. Why is there no Hell's Angelettes or does the documentary just ignore them? The group started in California, one of the country's most diverse states, yet no member seemed to be Black, Latino, Native, or Asian. When I saw that the group had a Johannesburg chapter, I was especially concerned, because that chapter may have been apartheid era footage. The film "Biker Boyz" is almost all Black. Are bikers segregated by race and do the Hell's Angels promote that division? The work never says. It renders whiteness and maleness as universal in very problematic ways.

The work does say Hollywood is fascinated by the group. However, it doesn't mention that John Goodman played a biker on "The Simpsons" and that some Hell's Angels were in the Eurythmics' video "Thorn in My Side."

When it's revved up to maximum rpm's, Biker Boyz qualifies as an adequate knockoff of The Fast and the Furious. Both films were inspired by magazine articles about speed-freak outlaws on the streets of California, only this time the nitrous-enhanced "rice rockets" are of the two-wheeled variety, and Smoke (Laurence Fishburne) is the reigning "King of Cali," leading a predominantly African American subculture that schedules illegal motorcycle races with high stakes and potentially lethal outcomes. Kid (Derek Luke, the promising newcomer from Antwone Fisher) is the latest challenger, facing off against Dogg (Kid Rock) and others before coming to terms with his own familial destiny. Following his incisive HBO debut, Dancing in September, director Reggie Rock Bythewood approached Biker Boyz as a modern Western, but it's really just a strutter's ball with polished chrome and tailpipes. Meagan Good, Lisa Bonet, and Vanessa Bell Calloway provide sexy feminine wisdom, badly needed in a movie that's all flash and precious little substance. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "Fast and furious" on two wheels.......2007-01-27

Firstly this film will, and should, only interest bikers. If you are not a biker, you will not get it.

Yes the plot and some of the characters are a bit thin, and transparent, but that's not the point. In the same way as "The Fast & The Furious" will only be truly enjoyed by nitro-blasting Japanese car drivers, this escapist tale of urban heroes racing their bikes means it is a film for a particular corner of the population. My view is that it never tries to be a popular groundbreaking fairy tale of a film, it just aims itself between the eyes of fellow bikers, and in that respect it is on target. The film does have atmosphere, some truly corny lines, and some excellent cinematography. Laurence Fishburne and crew play fairly well, surrounded by Hip-Hop playing, beer drinking urban anti-heroes while Kid Rock portrays the stereo-typical image of the grungy, greasy, chopper riding dropout.

However the true stars are the bikes. If you fancy seeing a tricked-up Busa, or stoppies and wheelies on Gixa's and R1's and some pretty hair-raising stunts, some even genuine then buy this. If not then go and watch Driving Miss Daisy.

3 out of 5 stars it was ok for me.......2006-05-23

    3 1/2 stars

it was ok\good for me I like the bike riding, the little action and it was fun good to enjoy it one of those now and then movies to enjoy.....

    5 out of 5 stars Biker Boys.......2006-03-21

I think the movie is great. It is one of my favorites. I have watched it twice since i got it. It is just one of those movies that you could watch over and over again and get excited everytime. It inspires you to want to have a motorcycle even if you are not going to ride it. (like me)

    2 out of 5 stars pretty dull.......2006-03-17

Lots of nice bikes but this movie was way to serious and emotional to have a name like "biker boys"... ..You should probably rent it before u buy it and if ur lookin for a real action packed biker movie get "torque" instead..O, and the special features were as dull as the movie

4 out of 5 stars Thrilling action packed movie with tons of crazy stunts..........2005-11-14

I really enjoyed this movie. If you are looking for a crazy motorcycle movie with tons of stunts, then this is the movie for you. It is more realistic than torque in a lot of aspects, while still having some scenes that you know are pretty fake. The crazy stunts they performed were wild and very entertaining, and the actual story was alright. It is about a kid whose father dies, and his mother is against motorcycle racing, yet the kid secretly does it and starts his own Biker Group. This is a good movie and I really enjoyed it.

If not then go and watch Driving Miss Daisy.

it was ok\good for me I like the bike riding, the little action and it was fun good to enjoy it one of those now and then movies to enjoy.....
