Audiences have always loved the spectacle of tough guys going soft and gooey, and We're No Angels adds the extra sweetener of Yuletide to its mix. The action takes place on Devil's Island, the tropical backwater where the notorious French prison was located. Three convicts, played by Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray, and Peter Ustinov, have escaped, and wait only for a ship to leave the next day. In the meantime, they become involved in the financial woes of an island shopkeeper (Leo G. Carroll) and his wife (Joan Bennett) and daughter, whose business is in danger from a rich, nasty relative (Basil Rathbone). Despite the threat of black comedy, especially in the form of a poisonous viper (which Ray carries around in a demure bamboo case), broad cuteness tends to rule the day. While it's not on the list of essential Bogart performances, Bogie does seem to be enjoying himself, and the puckish Ustinov savors his lines like a cow chewing grass. The stage origins of the scenario are all too obvious, and probably contribute to the pokey pacing (Michael Curtiz, who guided Bogart in Casablanca, was perhaps not the ideal choice for this kind of winsome comedy). This 1955 film looks good in comparison to the loose, labored 1989 remake with Robert De Niro and Sean Penn. --Robert Horton

Hilarious - an unconventional role for Bogie.......2007-05-19

Bogie, Peter Ustinov, and Aldo Ray play a trio of convicts trying to escape from Devil's Island in the late 1800s. The movie starts as they are roaming around the port city outside the prison looking for a way off the island. They wander into a store looking to rob it, but ultimately befriend the good natured proprietor and decide to help him and his family. The fun really starts when the pennypinching owner of the store (Basil Rathbone of Sherlock Holmes fame!) arrives from France and wants a full accounting of the finances. The three convicts take care of him but good! This is partly a light-hearted romantic comedy and partly a Christmas story. The dialogue and interplay between the three main actors is outstanding. This film probably doesn't merit the five star ratings given by many reviewers. It is far from Bogie's best role, but you'll have quite a few laughs. The scene when Basil Rathbone first arrives with the luggage swirling about is both well choreographed and hilarious. A light-hearted, colorful, uncomplicated and entertaining film - Hollywood doesn't make films like this anymore. Definitely worth a look.

From the producers of "The Terminator" and "Aliens" and it shows. Practically nonstop mayhem. And very much like the last two Mad Max movies, particularly in the costumes, makeup, and the town, which somewhat resembled Barter Town. Liotta, however, is no Mel Gibson; there didn't seem to be that hardness at his core that Gibson can project. However, I did thoroughly enjoy it in spite of the constant violence. Was filmed in Australia, with some gorgeous scenery shots. But far too much violence and very graphic. Although its message was good. I would think some scenes here could cause nightmares among the young and the more susceptible. There's really nothing wrong with the movie's plot; it's just that we're now too good in the technical department, and can make violence so real these days. Maybe we need to downgrade here, and not be so graphic.

Overlooked And Underrated Liotta Vehicle.......2005-10-30

What is it with guys like Ray Liotta and Lance Henriksen? They are great character actors, but once they take the lead, their films seem to be forgotten or ridiculed. "No Escape" is a particularly interesting flick considering that both Liotta and Henriksen appear in it. Not to mention Ernie Hudson and Stuart Wilson, who are two other top-notch actors who seem to be stuck in ruts.

This film didn't get much recognition in its day. I caught it at the movies years ago and loved it. Sure, it borrows from flicks like "Escape From New York" and I even see a little "Island of Dr. Moreau" in there, but it is an excellent film on its own merit. It has a stock story of a man who has committed a crime in order to right a wrong. He is banished to an island prison where no one escapes. On this island there are two factions: Insiders and Outsiders. One group is peaceful and lives in a semi-Utopian society whereas the other lives primarily under the rule of one man, Wilson. Henriksen plays the "Father," who quietly leads the Insiders. When Robbins, played by Liotta, falls into the game, he is sought out by Wilson's Marek, but ends up with the Insiders.

Naturally, Liotta decides he has to escape the island to prove his case and to seek out freedom. What follows is raid after raid and the eventual final battle, full of deception and action. But don't let this simplistic and borrowed tale deceive you. This is a fun film to watch and the primary characters are solidly developed.

Ernie Hudson heads up a strong supporting cast that features Kevin Dillon as a hard-luck innocent and Michael Lerner takes a nasty turn as the Warden. You'll recognize Hudson from "Ghostbusters I & II." He played Winston. Dillon was in the remake of "The Blob" and Lerner played the mayor of NYC in "Godzilla" with Matthew Broderick. There are other recognizable faces in the crowd as well.

If you're looking for a solid film with good production and a wonderful plot(though not very original), you're sure to enjoy "No Escape." Check it out and add it to your Ray Liotta library. He's an oft-overlooked actor who deserves better accolades.

"No Escape" is an amazing SCI-FI action movie starring Ray Liotta, who is my favourite actor along with Robert Patrick (T1000). Ray Liotta is in my opinion THE KING of ACTION MOVIES!!!!
He is an actor full of energy, who succeeds everytime in transmiting to the viewer exactly the feeling that he wants to transmit in that moment, a quality which only the great actors have it.
I can easily see on his face the joy of acting!!!
Keep it up, Ray!!!

NOT QUITE ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.......2005-03-14

No Escape liberally borrows a number of different plot elements from 1981's Escape from New York. An Island prison set in the near future where none can escape from and the prisoners have fallen under the leadership of powerful, tribal-like warlords. Escape from New York did it better and Manhattan Island makes for a much more interesting prison than a delsolate jungle island. But that's not to say "No Escape" isn't good. It is, it's just not totally original.

Ray Liotta plays Robbins, a soldier who shoots his commanding officer after a botched attack kills hundreds of innocent villagers. Robbins is sent to the Island prison called Absolom, where no one has ever escaped from. The Island is comprised of two warring factions: The Outsiders who are a savage, tribal group led by a ruthless warlord named Marek (Stuart Wilson), and the Insiders, a more peaceful, communal group led by the zen-like "Father" (Lance Henricksen).

Robbins is captured by the Outsiders and is tested by Marek in a death match with another member. Robbins dispatches him quickly, impressing Marek who offers Robbins a "position on his staff". Robbins wants no part and escapes, eventually being taken in by the insiders. The insiders have built a community where they farm, raise livestock, and have built simple machines like windmills, looms, and stills. They constantly have to fight off raids from The Outsiders and can use a man like Robbins.

There are several battle scenes as the Outsiders raid the Insiders wooden fortress, meanwhile the warden of the prison played by Michael Lerner keeps a close eye on things, especially Robbins through satellites, and other hi-tech means.

No Escape is a solid if unoriginal action/sci-fi flick. The characters are pretty two-dimensional. Lerner is the ruthless Warden, Ernie Hudson is Hawkins, the head of security for the Insiders, Kevin Dillon is Casey, the young prisoner who gets attached to Robbins, and Kevin J. O'Connor is the conniving supply man Stephano. The movie is derivitive of so many others but is well made and fun. Good escapist action.

Escape From This Mediocre Film!.......2004-08-04

Unimpressive film with a rather predictable plot. Ray Liotta has been wrongly convicted of a crime and is sent to an island-prison colony divided into two camps: unreformable criminals and reformed, peace-seeking, criminals. It is evident by Ray Liotta's character and his predicament that this is a good guy vs. bad guys movie. The dialogue is, for the most part weak, and the film is too long. For a movie of this sort, I would recommend watching "Escape from New York" or "Running Man" instead: they're shorter, have better stories, and better actors all together.

It's hard to imagine what any of the extremely talented people involved in this drastic misfire were thinking. Certainly the film was not short of talent: it had director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game), writer David Mamet (The Untouchables), and movie stars Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, and Demi Moore. Instead of remaking the charming 1955 comedy, which starred Humphrey Bogart and Peter Ustinov, Mamet concocted a virtually laugh-free script in which Penn and De Niro play escaped convicts disguised as priests who are supposedly visiting a shrine in a small town. The closest this film comes to comedy is De Niro's embarrassing mugging (it's endless) and Penn's dumb-bunny routine. Suggested for film students who want to learn what not to do. --Marshall Fine

Like most viewers (and the critics), I wasn't crazy about this buffoonish comedy when I first saw it in the '80's... but time has been kind to it. This remake of the Humphrey Bogart-Aldo Ray 1955 comedy-drama concerns escaped convicts (cut from 3 down to 2) who disguise themselves as priests and hide out in a boardertown, learning to love the residents if not their new vocations. Robert DeNiro mugs with a surprising vigor (his face seems to be made of rubber) and Sean Penn plays the dumb mug sidekick, and they're OK; but don't forget the supporting cast, which is excellent (particularly Demi Moore as a flooze and John C. Reilly as a seminarian). Production values are incredible (that entire town was built for the film) and there's a rousing climax involving a parade, a statue and a little girl (another great performance). Really not too bad, once you get over the shock of seeing two of our most intense, dramatic actors acting like two outta three stooges.

I really felt that this move deserves less than a star. Its plot was not done well and the use of a nuclear missle to cause a tidal wave does not hold much water - Sorry for the pun. I would not waist my money and buy this. The entire plot and suspense was not good. I watched it and felt I waisted my time. I did not really go for it.

About the only thing interesting or worthwhile about this movie is the special effects of the tsunami...but even those aren't so great. This movie is universally bad. So bad it's almost funny, though, which is why I gave it a star.

The script is absolutely terrible and not believable at all. I wasn't expecting much, but thought it would be interesting to see a movie about a tsunami; unfortunately, I was wrong. Don't waste your time or money. Don't even rent it...really.

Action packed from the get-go, some might say. On the edge of your seat always, others add. Lemme tell you something: action consists of a few gunfights and I was on the edge of my seat when I leaned over a little too much, but it was rectified when I scooted back.

Tidal waves strike away. Clearly, these are the works of a madman. Granted, I think my first bet would be to blame the moon, but who are we to argue? Hilarity ensues, featuring normal waves shot from below to make themselves look bigger and actors being sprayed by high powered hoses.

My favorite part of the movie was when the characters claimed a mad general wanted to destroy Mount Fuji by creating a tidal wave. Mount Fuji, a massive mountain that has survived earthquakes, tsunamis, and hundreds of years of weather being destroyed by a TIDAL WAVE? Even better was when a tidal wave was coming to shore and our heroes drive a boat through it before the wave topples a cruise liner. That's right folks. A small boat can speed through the same wave that can turn a massive cruise liner on its side.

Who said Hollywood is a competitive market, again?

Don't watch. Its 2 am, why am I wasting my time with this review? Oh by the way: screenwriters, listen up. Huge waves caused by disruptions in the sea floor are called tsunamis, not tidal waves. Tidal waves are affected by the tide, hence the name. Willickers.

If you like natural disaster movies then this is a good one for your collection.this movie is action packed from the get go, your always on the edge of your seat. It is a must see if you liked movies like the day after tomorrow although not as good special effects. this movie is a suffocating race against time that will keep you riding the crest of excitement until its explosive end!!!!!

One of the best films I've seen this year! With the market being so over saturated with typical 'good guy, bad guy' Hollywood movies, it's a refreshing change to run into a movie that so beautifully captures humanity. Thank you to the director for taking on such a tough subject and not forcing you to feel a certain way about the subject matter but allowing you to experience all sides of the conflict. The acting is wonderful on so many levels. The Jesus Nebot as the father and Susan Haskell as the victim's mother specifically give knockout performances. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. The added benefit being that it'll touch your heart on a deep level. It's no wonder this film has won so many awards. This movie was one of the best Alyssa Milano movies ever! It was brilliant. The acting was brilliant which I would expect from Alyssa but I was glad to see that the other actors didnt let her down. If you havnt bought this movie yet I strongly advise you do. And as the other reviews have said the twists that occur the whole way through will suprise you even the second or third time you watch it!

Body Count Is A Great Suspence and Action Film........2002-02-10

I rented this movie and I thought it was one of the best movies that I had ever seen. It's a great action film with an all-star cast that keeps wondering what's going to happen next. It is definitely one that I have to add to my movie collection.

I enjoyed this movie.. But before I ordered it, I checked this movie have subtitle in english or closed caption.. Because I am deaf myself and require closed caption.. It said have both subtitle and closed caption.. I was excite and bought it. But I am so disappoint and this movie not have subtitle and closed caption at all. That's BS!

Message for deaf people: Don't order this movie!

Must see - once in a lifetime.......2006-07-15

This film really is a must see, if only because it is so darn bad. It is easily a hot contender for the worst film of all time. A single star would be far too generous. Now, to be fair this might be considered a sort of OK childrens' film - if general ineptitude is a qualifying characteristic of many in that category (except for all the good ones of course) - but even then its R rating clearly puts it beyond the gaze of any would be toddler film buffs. The R rating was a genuine surprise. In Australia it was screened as a 'world premier' last new years eve. It was late (but not late enough), and after the only profanity uttered, the character actually apologized for swearing! Really this film is a future cult classic and should be seen either directly before or after Return of the Ring, for the sake of contrast.

Subterano is an Australian sci fi movie that is based on an actual video game. Conrad, a convicted murderer, escapes execution and finds himself trapped in a parking garage along with eight other people. They maneuver through each level of the game trying to stay alive.

The game is very interesting and has lots of action.

I enjoyed this movie so much that I looked at it again as soon as it went off.

In my opinion, this is a must see movie.

I was wrong to think that this movie was garbage.

very cool characters and FX make for a really fun movie.
movie is set in a parking garage, each level of the parking garage representing each level of the game. must see movie in my opinion. very cool sci-fi flick, check it out.

Subterano from teh way teh cover box is designed looks like a cheesy horror film. However once one pops in the DVD they soon realize that they are instead watching an action sci-fi thriller.

Subterano is an Australian made sci fi movie. The plot revolves around a group of people thrust into a situation they can't control when they are trapped inside a car park at the main HQ of this toy corporation. These people consist of four kids, an old man, a security guard, and two ex-lovers/revolutionaries. What happens inside the building is some psycho who created this program to imitate the game Subterano, a game notoriouse for never been beaten. THe characters must travel through seven levels and survive the traps set all in an attempte to escape. One bye one the cahracters get picked off as egos collide, paranoia kicks in, and hatred grows deeper.
