Possibly Worst DVD Set Production EVER!.......2007-06-05
And not because of the content of the DVDs. The movies themselves are fine; although deep down inside everyone was a little disappointed in Superman Returns. I have purchased and exchanged this set 3 TIMES! First time, not all of the DVDs were functional. Second time, DVDs' special features fiasco. Third time, the DVDs' case was broken and the discs were loose and got scratched. Tired of this, I finally kept the set that I had on hand. However, it's worth noting that the DVDs were out of order in the case, which makes some peoples' complaints about receiving duplicate discs and missing others more plausible.
How could Warner Bros. mess this up so badly? It's Superman for crying out loud!! He is one of their flagship franchises! I have hundreds of DVDs and have never experienced this much difficulty in finding a quality copy of a boxed set. I will think long and hard before buying any more DVD sets from Warner Bros.
Worse than George Lucas.......2007-06-05
So, Warner Bros. sells a defective product, ignores its customers' complaints, then expects us all to pay another $100+ for a "No Kidding, This Time We're SURE It'll Work" edition of a set we already bought? Thanks, but no thanks, Bullwinkle. Wow, how dumb you must believe we are...
Up, Up And Away!!!!!!.......2007-06-04
This is a gold mine for all Superman fans everywhere. Despite the problems this set has been plagued with, it was well worth the wait. Yes, $75 is a bit painful, but think about it this way, you're only paying a little over $5 each per single disc. You won't get a deal like that anywhere.
And the content is top-notch. Reacquaint yourself with a young Christopher Reeve in his heyday, as he bumbles as Clark Kent, yet soars as The Man Of Steel. I had almost forgotten just how iconic these films were. My brother and I saw the first movie waaaaaay back in 1978 (that tells you how old I am), and needless to say, it left an indelible impression on us. But it's only now where I can appreciate it on a different level. Like George Reeves before him, Christopher Reeve had a charm about him which spoke volumes. You couldn't have found a better Superman if you tried (notice the nearly 20-year span in between the two actors). Not just anybody could play this character, but both men ran, I mean, flew away with him, and defined their careers.
And these films have never looked better. All 17 of the Fleischer brothers cartoons from the early '40's are included within this set, and let me tell you, you will cry tears of joy at the beautiful restoration Warner Bros. did on these. (These put the Bosko Video releases to shame. And those were very well done). Other than a few surface scratches, they haven't looked this good since they were originally released. (I'm not THAT old, but I can only imagine the sight of them back then, since they were the first filmed representation of Superman).
I am very well pleased with mine. This whole collection is pure gold. Sadly, for some of this collection's buyers, its become pure Kryptonite. Hopefully everyone will work their problems out, sit back and reconnect with an old friend. You'll forget all about all the money you spent.

In 1952 Superman flew right into the hearts and minds of the American TV audience faster than a speeding bullet. Though most people were already familiar with man of steel through his comic books, as well as the popular radio show, it was the new medium's Adventures of Superman that transformed our resident Kryptonian into a timeless icon. For many young baby boomers, Superman was the ultimate symbol of truth, justice and the American way. After watching this nostalgic trip back in time it is easy to see why: George Reeves. Reeves is the quintessential Superman. He is kind, confident, smart, always does the right thing and can literally do anything physically. Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character has developed over the years. And then there's Phyllis Coates as the Lois Lane. Coates portrayal of Lois is surprisingly one of the stronger female roles in '50s television. She is one tough cookie able to stand her ground against criminals, fight off bad guys and is not afraid to outwardly express herself. Sadly, Phyllis Coates would be replaced by Noel Neill in subsequent seasons.
Adventures of Superman also stands the test of time well as one of the best shows from the early days of television. A lot of it has to do with how the writers, producers and actors approached the making of the show. This first season, as well as the second, were made as if they were making a serious show suitable for kids and adults. Instead of being a kids' comic book show, the episodes have a strong "mini-serial-crime-movie" feel, are very story driven and include loads of elements from the popular film noir style of the 1950s. This is evident in such classic episodes such as the season opener "Superman on Earth," "The Stolen Costume" where Superman has his costume stolen by a burglar, and the tense horror-noir "The Haunted Lighthouse." Also included on this DVD set is the 1951 theatrical release Superman and The Mole Men which later became the televised two-part episode "The Unknown People." --Rob Bracco

Revisiting an Old Friend.......2007-06-04
My son gave me a copy of Season One of "The Adventures of Superman" for Christmas, and I must say it was the best present I've received in a long while. We had such a good time watching favorite episodes. I am a child of the 50's and grew up with Superman while it was still fairly new. My son experienced it on Nick at Nite re-runs, a special time for us both.
Now I have purchased the Season Two set, and the episodes here may be in many ways better than those in the first. A particular favorite is "Panic in the Sky," where our hero has to deflect a meteor as it hurtles towards Earth. Special flying sequences were filmed for this episode that were not used in any other.
A special treat is "Stamp Day for Superman," a special episode that I never saw as a child. While it is a quickie "freebie" made to support the U.S. Treasury Dept., this episode stands up pretty well with the "regular" episodes.
The featurette "First Lady of Metropolis" is a wonderful tribute to Noel Neill, who took over the role of Lois when Phyllis Coates was unable to continue. It is so nice to see Ms. Neill still looking lovely. She still has the "sparkle" in her eyes that made her Lois so enjoyable to watch.
Another favorite episode is "Around the World with Superman." Anyone who is not moved by this story of a blind girl's attempt to re-unite her troubled family just doesn't have a heart.
Thanks to Warners and to my son for helping me capture a sense of my own youth.
Old Legends never Die.......2007-05-15
Gorege Reeves was the first person to bring Superman to life and did a excellent job at it. I love these serirs and i love the guy who plays Perry White and jack Larsen is so funny. I good part as Jimmy Olsen. My Favorite Episode in the this season is The Unknown People Parts 1 & 2. This is a pretty good tv show.
Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season.......2007-05-06
A must have for your Superman collection
good.......2007-04-28
I was a child in the fifties and watched superman faithfully. I really enjoyed watching it once again. I think it was more of a nostalgic warm fuzzy than anything else. (It's hard to be objective) I may buy more but if you didn't watch superman growing up, I'm not so sure you would like them as much.
THE REAL SUPERMAN.......2007-04-15
THESE ARE THE REAL ADVENTURES OF THE REAL SUPERMAN. GEORGE REEVES IS SUPERMAN,NOT CHRISTOPHER REEVE. NO BIG BUDGET PRODUCTION WILL EVER OUTSHINE THE GENUINE ARTICLE. LONG LIVE THE MEMORY OF GEORGE REEVES!

Description
After Superman: The Movie's epic storytelling and Superman II's awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon - and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound - but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.

My First Superman Film!.......2007-02-15
I first saw this when I was just a kid, My earliest memory of Superman is from this film.(At the begining with the car filling with water and superman rescues the guy trapped inside)
Even though I know this film compared to the previous 2 films is very poor!
I still love it.
And this deluxe version really improves on the crappy release we got back in 2001.
A must have for any Superman fan and the last decent(ish) Christopher Reeve Superman before everything went down the plug hole in the 4th film.
I wanted to give it no stars, but it wouln't let me.......2007-01-21
This is THE worst Superman film ever, it might even be the worst movie ever made!!!! If you want a good superman film DVD collection like I have, here's a list:
Superman: The Movie 4-Disk set
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman Returns 2-Disk set
Unfortunatly you get less movies this way, but they're makind a sequal so hopefully it'll be good, however you'll have to wait unyl 2009, so my advice, watch Superman cartoons, read Superman comics, and all that other stuff, then 2009 will be here before you know it! Just don't watch this (and don't watch IV either.)
SuperGREAT.......2007-01-11
Before writing this review, I viewed the others on this page and I am afraid that my view differs greatly from all but one of theirs. When I first saw this movie I was about 4 or 5 and found it to be fun and exciting. In experiencing these four films on DVD in a widscreen movie format as an adult I think Superman 1 through 3 are equally fantastic. What I liked about Superman 3 is precisely what most everyone else seemed to dislike, the lighter more humorous approuch to the story. I thought it was a nice change from the first two films which were very serious, excellent, but serious. It was in the same vain as Star Trek 4 The voyage Home, which was very light, humourous and adventurous. I thought it was a fitting change of pace from the first three, which delt with some very heavy issues as did the first two Superman Films. The new villain in this film was also a nice change, luther had already appeared in the first two, so having superman face off with someone unkown to him was great. I absolutely loved Richard Pryor in this, he was just so funny and his wonderful comic style helped bring a lighter air to this movie. I Agree with the other reviewers that Richard Donner is an excellent director and should not have been replaced, not to take anything way from Mr. Lester who I thought did a great job with Superman 3. I appreacated all of the opinions I read, as a superman fan who takes the quality of the films seriously, it is good to see that there are others as protective of the super film legacy as I.
Thanks for a great Movie Mr. Reeve and Warner Brothers
Superman vs. A.I........2007-01-06
In "Superman III" Superman (Chrisopher Reeve) must battle misguided computer Gus (Richard Pryor) and truelly evil billionaire Ross Webster who use a new kind of artificial intelligence to gain control of the world's oil supply. Meanwhile Clark is back in Smallville romancing young mother and former childhood sweetheart Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole, who ironically plays Martha Kent in "Smallville" TV show).
This is the point in the series when the producers stopped taking Superman seriously. Richard Lester has a reputation in slapstick comedy, and that's where he should have stayed. This movie is too jokey and funny for it's own good. Not that it's all bad, the living computer was a good idea, and I think it was originally supposed to be regular Superman villain Brainiac. And twin Superman was also good, with shades of Bizaro. Too bad they didn't use those villains instead of the Richard Pryor, who is terminally miscast as a supervillian. When Gene Hackman refused to reappear as Lex Luthor they gave the part to Robert Vaughn, not a bad idea, just not right. The battle at the end with the zombie robot was a horrible idea, a scene that is more likely to scare kids than entertain them.
The good things is the sweet relationship between Clark and Lana. It has always been known (even before the show) that Clark still holds a torch for Lana, and this really concretes the idea. Also you can see that while Clark knows the need for Superman, he is also a little tired of his super alter ego, and the twin fight of Clark and Superman is a good example of the internal struggle, actually well done, I must give Lester credit for that much.
Not bad, but the "Superman"series has fallen a long way since "Superman II".
Best Superman movie!.......2006-12-19
This is by far my most favorite superman movie. I've been waiting for 16 years for this "Making of Superman 3" to go on sale officially. I bought this dvd from amazon as soon as it got out and I don't regret it. The picture Quality of the main film seems better on this deluxe edition and the quality of picture on the documentary is superb. In additional scenes there is actually just one scene involving superman, and all the others revolve around richard pryor. Still for any Superman 3 fan this dvd is obligatory.

THE SUPERMAN REEVE SUPERMAN COLLECTION.......2007-05-07
THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST GIFTS THAT SUPERMAN FAN COULD EVER GET. I LOVE IT . THANK YOU
There's still a problem even with replacement disc.......2007-04-23
As many already know Warner set up an exchange program for the first disc in this box set. It seems the origianl theatrical 2.0 (Dolby Surround) mix was not correct but instead a 2.0 verison of the new 5.1. There are many differences between this one and the original 2.0 theatrical one released to theatres upon release. Warner's exchange program was meant to replace those discs with new and corrected ones. After waiting nearly 3 months I was forced to call WB and question where mine was. It was then sent to me overnight. But when it arrived I found the 2.0 mix (simply labled ENGLISH) is defective. In Dolby Surround 2.0 all dialog is meant to be in the center channel. Insead this release has it coming from all speakers, and if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 set-up it get really annoying with an echo. If you need to test your disc go to a scene where there is more dialog and no music and a low amount of sound effects like when Lois interviews Superman. Then compare the way is sounds with SUPERMAN III and SUPERMAN IV, which are both 2.0 Dolby Surround. You will see what I mean. It's a shame that WB has let this sloppy mistake happen - it should be fixed. Since this is a replacement disc I would imagine its the same version in the re-release of the Silver Box Set as well - even in the SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE sold on its own. I've been reviewing film professionally and have been a consultant for home video for 20 years and haven't seen a mistake like this in a long time. I tried to connact Warners several times but no one has returned my calls in the past month. Even the Home theater fourm deleted my postings on this. Having interviewed the film's producer several times I know this soundtrack shouldn't be like this. This film is considered a classic and should have been given better treatment.
Christopher Reeve Superman Collection.......2007-04-11
Great movies, perfect for a rainy weekend. Brings back great memories of a more relaxed time and a wonderful man.
Great movies...POOR presentation.......2007-02-19
Where do i begin? If you don't really want to own the new Superman movie, but just want all the classic Christopher Reeve films, you wuld think this is the best way to do it, right? I mean, it is called the CHRISTOPHER REEVE COLLECTION, isn't it? Yeah, well, you'd be wrong. Why? Read on...
There is a lot of extra content on this box set that is NOT from the Christopher Reeve movies: 17 old cartoons, the 1951 movie with George Reeves, a featurette on the Fleisher Superman....all completely unnecessary. Now, i'm not dissing this content for being present.... i'm dissing this content because this NON-CHRISTOPHER REEVE material is included AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER GENUINE CHRISTOPHER REEVE CONTENT!
Let's see what is NOT included in this collection:
1) Superman II: Richard Donner cut
2) Superman II: Restoring The Vision featurette
3) Superman II: Richard Donner's commentary
4) You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman (includes many details on the production of all 4 Reeve classics)
5) Look, Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story Of Superman
All of the above material contains extensive Christopher Reeve content. Unfortunately, in the "Christopher Reeve Collection," you get plenty of non-Reeve content to take up all the space of what could have been included. I mean, c'mon...17 Superman cartoons? That much material could have been an entire separate DVD release! The George Reeves movie could have been released as a bonus with the old TV show DVD sets.
Well, there is some good news: You CAN get all the above material on the ULTIMATE Superman Collection. Unfortunately, the packaging is flawed. The outer tin often arrives damaged, the inner disc holders break easily, and again, you pay for a lot of things you may not want...such as Superman Returns (which doesn't contain the bonus content you can only get on the Circuit City version). Oh yeah, and not to mention, two of the discs in the Ultimate Edition are wrong, and have to be replaced, AND it's almost impossible to find new, because it's out-of-print! Even if Warner fixes their disc problems with this set, and re-prints it, i'm sure the layout will still be just as poor.
The individual releases of Superman: The Movie & Superman II are the same way. Bonus un-related content, at the expense of much more Christopher Reeve content.
I find this totally ridiculous that they released these movies this way. I guess if you really want them though, THIS SET is certainly the way to go. This set is the same as you would buy them individually, in the same format/cases/layout only at a cheaper price. Then pick up the Richard Donner cut of Superman II separately. I'm going to see if i can download the missing Cinematic Saga of Superman content.
Super Superman Collection.......2007-01-18
Frankly I was not expecting a fantastic collection, technically, as most of the older Superman releases are pre Home Theatre time. However, the transfers were found to be quite good and we had no issue while playing them on multi-channel. With Sci-Fi genre it's actually important you see!
However, IF the viewers compare the audio/video quality of this collection with the latest release (Superman Returns), then they'd definitely be disappointed! As the latest one is simply loaded!
I personally feel that a booklet, paying tribute to Reeve, who had such a terrible end in his real life, must be included! Life's not been fair to him, but the producers can try to be!

Nostalgic Pleasure.......2007-05-13
I am 78 years old, but rememeber well the Saturday Matinee at my local movie theatre. Two feature films, a newsreel, a cartoon and, of course, a Chapter from whatever serial was playing at the time.
Superman - The 1948 & 1950 Theatrical Serial Collection was two of those serials and like most of them, was so bad it was good. Kids today will never know the exciting anticipation of having to wait a whole week before we could know how the hero was going to solve this week's cliffhanger. My only concern with these two serials was that Jimmy Olsen was going to have brain damage from being punched out so many times.
They're So Bad They're Good.......2007-05-12
I've always been interested in the movie serials of the 40's & 50's. They are usually so bad that they are good. They're shot on a low budget, the acting won't win any Oscars, the special effects are laughable!
That being said, I had a good time with the Superman serials. Kirk Alyn is OK as Clark Kent/Superman. The strange part about Clark Kent is that sometimes it appears he loses his powers when he's Clark. He can be beaten and knocked out. Other times he has his powers. Noel Neil is Lois Lane, the reporter who always finds herself in a predicament and must be rescued by Superman. I doubt a real reporter would purposely put him/herself in such situations. Poor Tommy Bond. As Jimmy Olsen, his only purpose is to get beaten up easily several times.
The special effects, well they don't exist! When Superman flies he becomes a cartoon.
But I still got a kick out of it. Two serials are included; "Superman" and battles the Spider Lady, and "Atom Man vs. Superman". Atom Man is the best of the two. This one introduces Luthor. I believe The actor playing Luthor is the same actor who portrayed Batman in the Batman & Robin serials.
Just kick back and laugh. As I said, they're so bad that they're good!

Saturday Morning Serial.......2007-04-17
Look Up in the Sky, Its a Bird..Its a Plane...NO, Its SUPERMAN
Before the TV show, Superman was brought to life in the Saturday Morning Serial. Here on 4 DVDS in the 1948 & 1950 serial (Superman & Atom men vs Superman).
The serials were 12-15 15 episodes which ran weekly with a movie. These short mini movies always left a character or Charater in a cliffhanger situation of life or death, which always they escaped in the next episode.
These two serials are a throwback to an easier time. with over the top villians like the Spider-Lady.
I remember was a was a kid at the Melba theater in Bronx, New York. They ran kiddy days, with a Disney or Disney like movie (Zebra in the Kitchen, A Tiger Walks, Circus World), with cartoons and serial episodes. AS I watch these episodes I was seven again and had the same thriill I had then
So if you want to see the originial SUPERMAN, this collection is the one to get

The Richard Donner cut of Superman II is an infamous legend come to life. Director Donner shot most of the sequel at the same time as his first blockbuster film, but somewhere along the line, the producers and studio lost confidence and brought in Richard Lester (The Three Musketeers) to rework the film, and receive sole credit. For years fans speculated on how different the final film was from Donner's original until an underground copy appeared showing a fully formed feature. In an unprecedented move, Warner Brothers officially embraces this alternate version. For those who have not been part of the rumor mill, know that Donner shot all the footage with Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). You can find blow-by-blow descriptions of what is new/changed elsewhere, but most of the changes deal with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder as the comic-book couple. Donner's cut provides alternate scenes for how Lois tests her hunch that Clark is Superman, the moment he reveals his identity, and how Lois unlearns that truth. Thing is, Lester's reshots are stronger, adding weight to the romance between the two, lifting the picture's stature. Lester also added the dandy Eiffel Tower opening. Donner's chief additions are in the Fortress of Solitude, where Marlon Brando returns to teach (Susannah York, as Superman's mom, appears in the Lester cut). The producers cut Brando's footage so they wouldn't have to pay him millions. The Brando/Reeve scenes continue the father/son dynamic of the first film. There is a great lesson in editing--Lester's less is better than Donner's more--when you compare how Kent turns back into Superman after losing his powers. The Donner cut is completely formed but does use some rehearsal footage, new effects, and some pieces shot by Lester. The history of cinema has many of these stories of movies reshot, hijacked, and changed from the original version, but here the underdog wins and Donner gets his chance to change history, even adding a note in the end credits about the use of fur and smoking as regrettable choices of the time.
Director Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz have a jolly good time revisiting their past on the commentary track. You get a clearer picture of who shot what, but the two have nothing good to say about Lester's edition. Donner doesn't go much into why he was dropped, just a difference of opinion and the need not to pay Brando. He also explains why the déjà vu ending of this edition was used in the first movie and a new ending would have been thought up for part 2. A quick featurette looks at how Michael Thau and a small crew reconstructed the film and compares several scenes from both versions. Also added are additional scenes shot by Donner but not used, most with Hackman. --Doug Thomas
Description
In the year of Superman Returns, Superman II starring Christopher Reeve also returns - with a totally different beginning and resolution. With Jor-El (Marlon Brando in recently discovered footage) in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son. With different Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman. With...well, with so many changes, large and small, that this Superman II is an eye-opening alternate experience. Director Richard Donner began shooting his vision of Superman II while concurrently filming Superman The Movie. Now, for the first time, his never-before-seen vision is here. And it's a must for every Superman fan, an important addition to the legend of the Man of Steel.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely, one for fans and collectors........2007-06-27
I've looked forward to this release of Superman II for a while. Although I think Richard Donner's cut tells a more compelling story of the Man of Steel, I can see why the changes that were made for Lester's theatrical version. Also, one particular scene where they decided to take footage from the screen test (since the scene was never originally shot), looks out of place and breaks the flow of the movie. I understand Richard's intent, and it was a valiant attempt to show the scene as he envisioned it, but I'm not sure it was necessary. Anyway, the DVD is worth adding to your collection, especially if you're a fan of the first two Superman movies.
The Best Superman Film Ever!!!.......2007-06-16
This is the best Superman film ever.I love Donners version of the film more than Lesters.Lesters version is still good but they're missing Jor-El and other things I like about this one.In this one Jor-El is back instead of being replaced by Lara.In this one Lex visits the Fortress(like in lesters)but in this one Marlon Brando actually talks to him.I love it when Lois finds out Clark is Superman because it is funny.Lesters version was not funny but this one is. I also love the deleted scenes and commentary. The deleted scenes tell you what happened to Zod,NON,and Ursla and the commentary is great because director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewciz talk about the film.I think any true Superman fan should buy this Donner version of Superman 2.
A definitive Superman II!.......2007-06-13
Superman: The Movie was a great film, but to me, the sequel (most of which was shot concurrently with the first film), was great at some points and not so great at others. Then I later discovered that the reason was due to there being two directors and a lot of the scenes I had a beef with were shot by Richard Lester not Richard Donner, who was fired after the first film's premier. Most painful to watch was the Clark Kent tripping scene and the Lois Lane Niagra Falls jump scene.
And then there's the stunning lack of Marlon Brando as Jor-El. A decision that was made to save money. Thankfully, that has been rectified.
Amazingly, Dick Donner and Michael Thau were able to recut the film using footage that was thought to be lost and did a whale of a job.
And fittingly, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, is dedicated to Christopher Reeve.
All your questions will be answered... but the first time you won't be happy........2007-06-09
WARNING: PLOT SPOILER!
With all due respect, Amazon customers are not reviewing this movie correctly. You need to understand what it is, how it was made, and the reason for what you're complaining about.
Let's start WAY back. Richard Donner was filming Superman: The Movie and Superman II at the same time. For example, if they had Gene Hackman, they'd film a Lex Luthor scene from I and then II. However, as the the release date for I drew near, the crew decided to temporaily stop production on II to finish I by Christmas. The movie, as many know, was a huge success.
When production on II was stopped, Donner had finished filming every Marlon Brando scene, every Hackman scene, the begining, and the ending. The Salkinds, the producers of the Christopher Reeve Superman series, decided to fire Donner for many reasons. First off is that Brando was demanding much more money for his footage than the first time. The Salkinds didn't want to pay it. Donner said that we do the movie right, or we don't do it all. And then Donner was fired, all because the Salkinds wanted to save a few thousand dollars, which they wouldn't even noticed they lost if they let Donner finish the film.
Richard Lester was hired to finish Superman II. He is the man who directed the version we've been viewing for years. Lester re-shot many of Donner scenes, not because he had to, but if he directed at least 51% of the film , then he could be credited as the "official" director. Scenes that were kept were only Luthor scenes and some "fillers" that didn't need to be re-shot since Lester had 51% of the footage that would be used with his name on it. When people watch Lester's version of II, and especially III since Donner had not part in creating it, that he doesn't have the "comic book" spirit.
When I watch Superman II, as with other people, I always have so many questions. (Not anymore.) I also notice so many inconsistentsies. Many people who watched II before they knew the Donner story think the following things: how does Superman get his power back in the end? What happened to Superman's father? (Why is his mother suddenly at the Fortress of Salitude?)They also notice how Clark Kent's glasses color change, and how there is sometimes a huge age diference that is noticable in Superman and Lois in a few scenes. It is obvious now that Superman's father is not there due to Brando was too expensive for the cheap Salkinds, Superman got his power back from a scene that was shot with Brando which the plot couldn't allow his mother to replace him, and that all the inconsistenites and age differences are from going to Lester footage to Donner footage.
Ok, now for the part you've been waiting for...
Superman II- The Richard Donner Cut was released in 2006. (You think it has anything to do with the release of Superman Returns? Oh yeah, by the way, GREAT MOVIE! See my review there!)Experts found all of his footage in England. As you recall from the begining, Donner never finished the movie. Therefore, in this cut, Lester footage was used occasionally to keep the story going. Since Lester footage was from a movie with a slightly different plot, it doesn't fit in perfectly, but there is no other option. When everyone says that they like Lester one-liners better than Donner one-liners, for examples, "General, would you care to step outside?" to "General? Haven't you heard of freedom of the press?", they must remember it's not about creating a movie that will be a box office hit. It's about creating a movie that shows Donner footage. And when a scene that Donner shot it also avaible in a slightly different Lester version, the Donner version will be shown. (Remember: in the rare case that Lester has better footage, he got to do it after Donner filmed his cut!)
And now, the ending. Yes, VERY dissapointing. Superman I had such a great ending that wasn't anticipated, and we waited for the same type of thing. And we got the same thing: the EXACT SAME ENDING shown on the EXACT SAME FOOTAGE! Let me ask you something, do you think Donner said " I'm going to make two dramatic movies and then end them the same way?" No! When Donner shot the ending of Superman turning the world back, he didn't know what movie to use it on. When the pressure for I came, he decided to use it and would film an ending for II later, which he NEVER GOT TO DO! So at that point, it's either Donner's ending, or Lester's magic kiss of memory loss. Since it is called Superman II- The Richard Donner Cut, I think you know which one was used.
So there you have it. I got a kick out of seeing this since all of the questions I had that were never answered were answered. If you are looking for entertainment, rent it because this movie wasn't designed for that. This isn't Superman: The Movie or Superman Returns; it's a work-in-progress that's not in progress anymore. If you are a Superman fan, not only will you love it, but you'll want to keep this and add it to your Superman DVD stash.
SupermanFan was right.......2007-06-02
Film looks great in Blu-Ray (as does Superman, amazing how they can make films from the 70's and 80's look better than some of the stuff they're releasing on BR now). Anyway, superman II Richard Donner cut is very good most of the way through, but as SupermanFan rightly said, it literally loses the plot at the end. Suddenly none of the film makes sense and it's hard to believe that an entire production crew didn't see the fault. However, adopt your suspension of disbelief and ignore the last silly 5-10 mins and it is well worth adding to your library. Would love to see the other original Superman II brought to Blu-Ray too though.

Look up in the sky, it's a bird , it's a plane, it's the best Superman box set any fan could have asked for
The Ultimate Fix for a Superman Junkie!.......2007-06-07
Dear God, this is the set I've been waiting for all my life. I have been in love with the Superman mythos since the first movie way back in 1978. A large part of my love with the character is the complexity given by Christopher Reeve's performance which Brandon Routh aptly carried on. Above all, this set allowed me to finally see the legendary cut scenes from Superman IV (And no, they not only do not improve the movie as urban legend claims but make it worse) as well as Richard Donner's version of Superman II (making me wonder if he'd had the time to do some final reshoots and add that finishing touch what it really could have been). I fell in love with Superman all over again.
Absolutley a must have.......2007-06-04
All I can say is if you are a fan of Superman and in particular the movies this is the set to have. It has everything!
And the Special editions and Donner Cuts are fantastic.
UP, UP, and AWAY!!!.......2007-05-09
Almost everything that is needed to say in this Ultimate Superman Movie Collection have been said -- including the raves and rants. I really don't mind the minor setback on Superman III's sounds and Special Features issues, as the movie is not really that well made and interesting. Unfortunately it is, and will always be, a part of any true Superman movie collector or fan's movie library. All in all, it is a great collection to have, and it is still cheaper to buy it this way than to buy the movies separately, plus you won't get the extra goodies included in this special collection. I ordered mine last November even before it was officially out, and I have no regrets with it so far. The packaging was great, it arrived on time, and the DVD's are in excellent condition.
Superman Superset.......2007-05-06
One of the best box sets ever put together for a film series, and a great price for what you get. Almost worth the price of admission just for the Fleischer cartoons, which are the best transfers available anywhere and looks nearly pristine. Throw away your other versions!

Here was a case in which the progenitors of this successful comic-book adaptation figured they had to go in a new direction--and chose the wrong one. For starters, they recruited comedian Richard Pryor, who was the kiss of death for almost every movie he was in except his own concert films. He plays a computer specialist who is hired by a criminal mastermind (Robert Vaughan) to help him take on Superman by exposing him to a new form of Kryptonite: red Kryptonite, which always had unpredictable effects in the comic books. In this film, it splits Superman in two, dividing his good self from his dark side. The special effects had gone about as far as they could, and this movie strains to hold an audience's interest for its full running length. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Oh No!!! Superman and Clark Kent.......2006-12-07
This movie is bad, but there is one redeeming plot line - the internal struggel of Superman with his alter-ego, Clark Kent. The personalities split in a junk yard fight that is truly fun and intriging; however, beyond that - the movie is a waist. Richard Pryor is poorly used and Robert Vaugne is too camp.
Energy shortages, Toxic chemicals, and AI monsters........2006-11-08
The opening scene starts with a shot where, Mr. White, and Jimmy busy setup the Travel photo shot - bingo winner promotion at the Daily Planet. Gus Gormon plot to control the weather satellite will spoil the luck winners Wedding trip too South America. Lois is departing for the tropical islands for her next assignment. Clark and Jimmy are on assigned too Smallville to write an article about class reunions, "the prodigal son and his photographer going home".
Gus Gormon is a computer genius. Gus, receives $143.80 a week. Gus invents "Salami Slicing" routing ½ cent unpaid transactions "floating around" in the computer into his expense account. Ross Webster's accountant GL reports trace the 85k of missing to Gus. Ross calls Gus a "naughty genius". Ross never wears the same socks twice. Ross wants Gus to help him to corner the coffee market. Ross tells Gus, jail is for rapist and robbers and the rapist rob the robbers, implying a torturous option for Gus. Russ wants to create an artificial scarcity and control the price of coffee by destroying the Columbia harvests positioning him too "dictate the economy of the free market". How? Russ wants Gus to reprogram the Vulcan satellite to cause weather disturbances: rainy seasons, hurricanes, and tornados, in Columbia. Gus says he will need a small Mickie Mouse terminal to do the work. One is found in the city of Smallville.
Coffee scarcity is short-term, eventually an greenhouse method of supplying coffee would meet world demand. Russ's dream of controlling the free market was a deception.
On bus route to Smallville, a Chemical fire interrupts Jimmy and Clark journey. Jimmy wants exclusive pictures telling Clark, "Danger goes with the territory, Mr. Kent". Clark transforms into superman, the pumphouse fails, and the firemen are without water and the fire threatens a storage unit of corrosive solid acid which is about to become vapor; acid vapor that can eat through steel/everything and destroy all life on earth. Superman blows compressed currents of cooled air at a nearby lake, then he lifts the lake to the fire, and drops it, and the ice changes to water from the heat and extinguishes the flame. One fireman exclaims, "that man is a miracle.
At the reunion, Clark is anti-social and he carries on a dull dialogue with an aged teacher. Clark sees Lana and says, "Lana Lang, it is great to see you!" Lana reciprocates commenting to Clark that this is the first time since the death of his mother that he has returned to Smallville. Brad Wilson wishfully harasses Lana but Lana wards off his social interactions. Lana tells Clark, "I always wished that you would talk to me". In the comic strip, Lana was a insect superhero. Lana envy's Clark's adventures in Metropolis calling it the "the big apricot". Lana says, "Clark you never married", "I guess that's one that got away". Clark learns that Lana has a son name Rickie. Lana feels sorry for Rickie telling Clark, Rickie is the "only kid in town without a father". Lana invites Clark to Rickies birthday party and the group bowling activity. Rickie is a terrible bowler. Brad steps in and wants to showup Clark, embarrass Rickie, and overpower Lana bragging to Clark that he is a champion. Clark bowls a strike that destroys all the pins.
Gus reprograms the Vulcan satellite too cause a five years coffee crop recovery by a 250 mile/hour hurricane. Gus complains to Russ that just as the destruction started "Superman began doing his thing", "Superman is bad". Russ brainstorms and decides he wants to create an oil shortage. Russ wants Gus to reprogram the computer telling the oil tankers to converge at a certain place in the Atlantic Ocean. Gus needs to stop Superman. What can stop Superman? Kryponite. Gus says, the planet Krypton blew up; there is Krypton debris floating around in space; and Gus can use the Vulcan lasers to analyze the composition of Kryponite and synthetically reproduce it on earth. Gus wants to share in the profits telling Russ, "I'm not making enough money for this gig". Gus has manufactured a near perfect replicate of Kryptonite but 5% is an unknown element. Smallville mayor awards Superman the key to the city of Smallville. Gus impersonating a General offers Superman the Kryptonite replica, but no effects are visible. Eventually, Superman becomes evil from the influence of the Rock. Gus convinces Russ to build a supercomputer that can think. Gus uses the computer to order all the oil tankers to the Altantic, command the pumps to stop pumping, and cause irreversible damage to the computer systems. The 1970s resent of the rich oil companies is rhetorically eluded too: "Someone is always getting richer", "who suffers?", "the Small guy". Rickie yells at the evil superman, "tell them you will be getting better", "your just in a slump", and "you'll be great again". Superman recovers, defeats Gus's supercomputer that can find anyone's weak spot, and restores oil back to an energy-starved world.
SUPERMAN III.......2006-09-13
After the brilliant first two films there was alot of pressure for the Salkind Brothers to produce another great Superman film but sadly in Superman III's case it failed & quite miserably.
The main problem lies with the script, the arch villain Ross Webster could have been stopped by the FBI with his plan for an oil monopoly so why on earth would he be a true villain to Superman is anyone's guess.
Even the supercomputer, just send a few F15 bombers & lets see how its super defence deals with that.
The only true challenge for Superman comes in the middle of the movie & that was with his evil alter ego & should (I believe someone said this earlier) have been the main story instead of this silly super computer story.
Although there were some problems concerning pre production (Margot Kidder had a row with The Producers & therefore only appears for around five minutes in this film) but the casting of Annette O' Toole didn't really affect the film as she's one of the stories strongest characters.
Apart from the Superman Vs Clark fight, & the Lana & Clark scenes, there is not much worth watching & the title joke sequence at the beginning is really cheesey.
And Richard Prior in any film let alone a Superman film is a big enough joke.
GREAT STAND UP COMEDIAN!!!!!
AWFUL ACTOR!!!!
Neurons in rest!.......2006-08-14
The script is extremely pretentious, although the charismatic presence of Richard Pryor be the dramatic axis as the computer wiz who will alter the normal coordinates of a world in progress.
As comedy it's Ok.
Super Junk.......2006-08-04
I saw this as a kid, and thought it was kind'a dumb. Years later, when I saw the Superman Collection, I thought to myself, maybe it wasn't that bad, I was only a kid, so maybe I just didn't get some of it. Well it happened to be on TV last night, so I watched it. What a piece of junk. The acting was so bad, the special effects look like they were produced in the special ed class. They tried adding humor, but the slapstick was so lame it wasn't even funny. It was a total waste of time, even for a fan. I happened to love the first 2, they were awesome, so how did this end up such a piece of garbage? For instance, he uses his super breath to freeze a lake top so he can carry it over to put out a fire. Why didn't he just use his super breath to blow out the fire in the first place? Yeah lot of half thought stuff slapped together.
Anyway, I haven't seen Superman 4, but I hear it's the worst of the bunch. If that's the case, I'm not sure I even want to see it. So I would recommend buying Superman 1&2 separately for something like $26 total, and save your self from the collection.

The Two Essential Superman Films!.......2005-10-06
Superman: The Movie
After discovering the tragic fate soon to befall his own planet, Kryptonian scientist Jor-El and his wife Lara send their only son, the infant Kal-El, to the distant planet Earth in a small spaceship, knowing that its atmosphere and the rays of its yellow son will bestow upon him powers and abilities far greater than those of its inhabitants. With his vastly superior knowledge and gifts, Kal-El will have a great advantage over the people of Earth, veritably insuring his future, but with great power comes great responsibility, to borrow from a later comic book icon. It will be Kal-El's lifelong duty to help and guide the people of Earth, to be a savior to them in times of crisis and a role model for them as they go about their daily lives.
Whether prearranged by his father, Jor-El, or completely by a stroke of terrific luck, most likely the former, baby Kal-El's ship crash lands in a field in the Rockwellian town of Smallville, Kansas, just as a kind, salt-of-the-earth, regretfully childless farming couple is driving down the nearby road. Jonathan Kent and his wife, Martha, at first don't know what to make of the strange discovery, but the toddler seems to be the answer to their countless prayers for a youngster of their very own. The couple raise the boy, instilling in him their strong values of goodness, courage, faith, humility, love, loyalty, truth, justice, and the American way. Everything seems picture perfect for the Kents and their adopted son, who they have renamed Clark, until Jonathan Kent passes away of a heart-attack and a strange glowing object calls to Clark from the barn. It is this event from which the now 18 year-old Clark Kent, also known as Kal-El of Krypton, learns that he must finally leave his gray-haired old mother and travel north to find his destiny, and so he does.
In the isolation of the cold, bitter north, the green, glowing crystal Kal-El found that night on his Smallville farm helps him to create a new home. Not a home for his mild-mannered Earthling identity, Clark Kent, but a home for his new persona, the mighty hero known as Superman! After twelve years of learning from the crystals that contain all his parents' knowledge of mankind and the universe, Superman emerges as a god among men, with skills even greater than he ever knew he had before: Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Right away, Superman makes his presence known to the world, even as he is just settling into his new home in the fantastic city of Metropolis, and his new job as a reporter with The Daily Planet, a beacon of truth and hope across the globe. All seems to be going well with Kal-El's new existence in the hustling, bustling Metropolis, with new friends and coworkers Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane in Clark Kent's life, not to mention the stern but fatherly Perry White, the Daily Planet's editor, and Superman making a name for himself as the city's own high-flying guardian angel. Things are about to get more complicated, though, as a maniacal criminal mastermind named Lex Luthor plots to wreak havoc from his secret underground lair. While Superman shuffles his heroics and reporting schedules to fit in time for courting Miss Lane too, Luthor is busy laying out a plan to sink Los Angeles into the ocean, making his recent desert land purchases immensely more valuable as the NEW west coast! Realizing Superman is the only thing that can stand in the way of his devious scheme, Lex and his bumbling cohorts research and discover the only way to kill the Kryptonian man-of-steel, green Kryptonite! With this deadly weapon now in their evil arsenal, even Superman may not be able to save the day!
In 1978, producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind set forth to make a movie like no one had ever seen before: A big-budget comic-book film called "Superman." Their idea was a tour-de-force of camp, but the director they hired to do the job, "The Omen's" Richard Donner, had a different sort of film in mind. Richard, who was hired to shoot both Superman and Superman 2 simultaneously, knew that if the film was to work, it had to be a completely believable and engrossing story of one man's struggle to make a difference with the talents giving solely to him, not a feature-length joke about the comic book hero genre. Locking in big names in the roles of Superman's father, Kal-El (Marlon Brando), and arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), Richard set the groundwork for a film that could be taken seriously, rather than just shrugged off as a kiddie flick. While an incredible team tackled the problem of inventing groundbreaking effects for a film that was abundant in the fantastic, and completely without the aid of CGI, Donner went on to the difficult task of casting his leading man and lady. He found perfection in the forms of a young Christopher Reeve and a feisty Margot Kidder. With Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Glenn Ford, and even more high-profile names rounding out the stellar cast, made to glow by the stunning lighting and camera work of Geoffrey Unsworth and the incomparable music of John Williams, the final package was nothing short of a masterpiece! "Superman: the Movie" was a fantastic success, spawning three sequels, the sister-film "Supergirl," and securing the last son of Krypton's place as a pop-culture icon from now to the end of time!
On DVD, "Superman: the Movie" looks fantastic, and the double-sided disc is loaded with extras! With deleted scenes, trailers and TV spots, three 30-minute documentaries on the making of the film, a music only track and additional, alternate music tracks, a readable legacy of Superman, cast and director filmographies, and some highly entertaining screen tests featuring a variety of Lois Lanes (Anne Archer made quite an appetizing Lois), this truly is a special edition! The disc is capped off with a great feature commentary by director Richard Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz, who give a passing mention to everything from the film's clear parallels to the life of Jesus Christ (a theme continued through Superman 2, which puts its own spin on the New Testament's Book of Revelations), to personal differences between the cast and crew! It's quite an interesting listen! Whether or not an even MORE special "Special Edition" of "Superman: The Movie" will be released soon to hail the coming of the new Warner Brothers film "Superman Returns" is unknown at the time of this review, though it is quite likely. After all, this is the only one of the Superman feature DVDs with any extras worth talking about, and the definitive Batman film "Batman Begins'" DVD release next month will be accompanied by an all new set of Special Editions of the four previous Batman films. It would only seem natural that the Superman films would follow suit, and, make no mistake, "Superman: The Movie" will always be the definitive Superman film!
Superman II
It's a typical day for Clark Kent, 2nd banana reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper, when Editor-In-Chief Perry White sends him to Paris, France to cover a story of terrorism at the Eiffel Tower. It's a typical day for Superman too, when the hostage situation involves a hydrogen bomb and the woman of his dreams, ace reporter Lois Lane. Superman makes short work of the explosive device, hurling it into space where it can do no harm. Little does he know that the subsequent explosion has released three of the most dangerous criminals in the history of the planet Krypton from their imprisonment within the Phantom Zone (as seen in the first Superman movie). The cruel and merciless General Zod and his disciples, the hateful Ursa and the mindless Non, after destroying a team of astronauts on the moon, immediately set their power-hungry sights on the meek and conquerable planet of Earth. Meanwhile, Earth's most dangerous criminal mind, Lex Luthor, plots a successful escape from the maximum security prison in which he is being held, and, following Superman's usual flight pattern, makes his way due north to discover the hero's secret layer and the details of his alien past.
As the three Kryptonian criminals wreak havoc and revel in their new superhuman powers, Superman is preoccupied with Lois Lane, who has discovered that he and Clark are one in the same while investigating a story at Niagra Falls and posing as a honeymooning couple. It would appear that Superman is quite relieved to have someone to share his secrets with, especially since that someone is Lois. He quickly whisks her away to his Fortress of Solitude in the great, white north. While the Man of Steel completely opens up to his lady-love, Lex travels to the White House to converse with Earth's NEW leaders, and to give the three alien terrorists an offer they can't refuse! It seems like this would be the worst time ever for Superman to give up all his superpowers and become a regular, mortal man, but that's just what he does! Completely clueless as to what has transpired in the world outside his icy fortress, Superman declares to the soul of his deceased mother Lara that he loves the Earth woman, Lois. She reveals to him that he must forego all his superhuman abilities to be with her, and so he does. It would seem that no one can stop the three criminals from Krypton now! And, with all the information Lex Luthor is providing them, they decide their next conquest will be the son of the man who imprisoned them in the Phantom Zone in the first place, Kal-El of Krypton, also known as Superman!
After the world was wowed by the first Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve, the second one had a tall order to fill. With a change of directors after 2/3rds of the film had been shot, and various other powerful elements being lost that made the first film great, their was a fair possibility that the second outing would not go well. Luckily, the first film had set so much excellent groundwork, including lots of previously shot sequel footage by "Superman: the Movie" director Richard Donner, that a first Superman sequel would be hard to mess up.
