4 out of 5 stars A Mixed Season.......2007-07-03

I'm a huge Miami Vice fan and I think season 5 was an improvement over season 4.I have to admit the first two episodes where Crockett has become Burnette was very interesting and they could've played out the story for another episode or two,I think it would've been cool to see Crockett actually complete his plan to take over and eventually Vice would bust him and then he would have remembered who he really is,instead the writers decide to do a complete U-Turn and the next thing you know he's back as Crockett.Honestly though, the moment in "Redemption in Blood" when Burnett/Crockett casually walks into the Police station and everyone draws their gun on him was one of the greatest moments in TV history,I totally wasn't expecting that and I was glued to the TV during that moment. It's obvious though as you watch the rest of the season that the show was falling apart and needed to end.I mean, there's a couple of episodes without Crockett, one or two without Tubbs and several back to back without Castillo, who was my favorite character. The strangest episode though was "Leap of Faith" which was an entire episode with a whole different cast,I mean,WTF?If this had been decided to be the last season why not dedicate yourself as writers and actors to making it the best season you possibly could. There was some good episodes toward the beginning of the season and then it just went off the rails, until the end episode "Freefall".This was a terrific episode and while watching this I had to think to myself,God,why couldn't the writers and actors put forth this much effort to make more episodes this thrilling and well written and directed, what a shame.I must admit I had very mixed feelings about the way it ended. For instance, there was no formal goodbyes said to to Trudy,Gina,or Swytech. And as great of an actor and character Castillo was they could've had a truly great emotional moment with Castillo,Crockett, and Tubbs expressing their respects for Castillo and vice versa. That seemed like the honorable thing to do for the character of Castillo and the fans. And the last scene where Crockett and Tubbs shake hands was way too short and weak.I mean cmon, all they say to each other is I'm going to miss you and briefly shake hands and that's it.These guys were like brothers and for the respect of the show and for the fans that scene should've been longer and more emotional than that. After all the great dramatic greatly written scenes of dialog from these two over the previous seasons(especially from Crockett),it just seemed that the ending scene was less than satisfying.Either way though,I was actually saddened to watch the end.

4 out of 5 stars Good time to call it a day.......2007-06-05

This was an unbalanced season but still contained the emotional content I liked. I still would watch this season before I'd watch about all the stuff on tv nowadays. The blend of music and imagery was still there. Jan Hammer missing was a bit of a bummer but they still managed to use quite provocative music most of the time. I used to think season 4 was weak but after watching it now after a long time I found it way better than I remember... hopefully season 5 gives me the same!

5 out of 5 stars Miami Vice Rocked and Rocks ON!.......2007-05-30

I didn't have to comment with anyone of the comments made about Miami Vice. MIAMI VICE is what it is, ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, THE BOMB, SONNY & TUBBS MADE SURE THAT WE WERE IN FRONT OF OUR TV's BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE WENT ON IN OUR LIVES ON "THEIR NIGHT." THE MUSIC WAS ON, SONNY WAS ON, CASTILLO WAS ON, RICARDO or RAPHAEL WAS ON & TRUDY (THE ORIGINAL MISS BIG BOOTY, read her name plate on her desk BigBootyTrudy) WAS ON and I don't say that to BE sexist to this critique, if you will...I am a very married straight woman and if I wasn't, SO WHAT! It is what it is! It's just true and I don't want to forget Gina who was always ON also. Miami Vice is the best thing that ever happened to television. The movie made with the WANNABEES portraying CROCKETT AND TUBBS WAS A SHAME! I HATED IT AND HAD NO INTENTION TO SEE IT, HOWEVER I WAS TRICKED BY MY HUBBY AND ASSOCIATES. It would have been nice to see the older Crockett and Tubbs handle the intrigue they wanted or should I say they tried to portray in the different situations in the movie however, they didn't ask fans of the the TV series what we thought and it was TERRIBLE!! If it wasn't one of a kind then special Television Shows, Movies, Innovative shows from the past would not exist in TVLAND, etc. If it wasn't one of a kind it would not be on at least 5 to 7 different channels at different times everyday of the week. I am thankful we can buy our DVD's and watch them anytime we wish. I look forward to the fifth season and I'll embrace it as if it were brand new. It's so good we have something to look forward to with the DVD's because everything on TV now that is even close to the Miami Vice format is a rip off of Vice. Watch very close, very close and you will see that Sonny and Ricco had already been there. SORRY, it is what it is and it's TRUTH. DON'T YOU MISS THE MUSIC. ROCK ON MIAMI VICE, ROCK ON FOREVER!!!!! Think about it isn't this why they have TV LAND? TV LAND is for classic television right. THERE IS ALWAYS GROUND-BREAKING TV. SEE YA OFTEN MIAMI VICE, YOU BROKE THE GROUND. I LOVE YOU ALL 4EVER! IT MEANT EVEN MORE TO THOSE OF US WHO WERE STATIONED OVERSEAS, SERVING IN THE U.S. MILITARY AT THE TIME IT CAME OUT, WE MAY HAVE STARTED WATCHING MIAMI VICE 1 1/2 to 2 years late but it was well worth it. WE HAD MIAMI VICE GET TOGETHERS, PIZZA NIGHTS, PARTIES, ETC. AND WE THANK SONNY, RICO, CASTILLO, ETC. FOR MAKING A WHOLE LOT OF OUR FAMILIES GOOD & FUN TIMES HAPPEN, THANKS AGAIN!!!! P.S. LOVED YOU TOO NASH BRIDGES, BRING IT ON! MAYBE TV SHOWS COULD TAKE ANOTHER HINT AND PLAY SOME DECENT MUSIC TO YOUR DRAMAS YOU HAVE ON NOW. MAYBE I'D WATCH..GOOD LUCK!!
SHOULD I DEFINE ON: ON IS ON TIME, ON BOARD, ON MY TV, ON IS COOL, ON IS THE BOMB, ON IS WHAT'S HAPPENING, ON IS SOLID, ON IS FUN, ON IS INTERESTING, ON MAKES YOU THINK, ON MAKES YOU NOT MISS AN EPISODE, ON IS THAT MIAMI VICE WAS THE BEST TV AND PURPLE RAIN WAS THE BEST MOVIE, ON IS HOT AND ON IS IF YOU WANT TO SEND A LOT OF NEGATIVE COMMENTS TO ME, SAY I'M CRAZY, SAY IM OUT THERE, GO AHEAD. I COULD CARE LESS. I'M ON AS YOU READ THIS...HAHAHA.

WITH ALL SINCERITY,

5 out of 5 stars Before Elvis there was nothing, and after Vice there has been not much either.......2007-05-24

John Lennon said that before Elvis there was nothing. Of course, apart from a lot of teengroups, this was quite accurate. I would dare to say that after Vice there has been nothing on tv that could equal, let alone surpass it.
I do NOT agree with reviewers saying that Vice "overstayed it's welcome by becoming a trendfollower after having been a trendsetter in earlier seasons."
It is true that indeed, as a reviewer so eloquently put it, "the mood and feel of the show had shifted away from the pop-electric neon atmosphere of earlier seasons to a darker and edgier tone beginning with the two-part conclusion to the season four cliffhanger "Mirror Image" that ended with Sonny, believing that he is his undercover persona Burnett after suffering total amnesia in a boat explosion, races off in a speedboat after killing an undercover detective."
Of course when Vice as a series progressed in tv time, so did the real decade that Vice was all about (or to use a chiasm; were the 80s about Miami Vice just as well?). The glamour of the earlier part faded away as the 90's with grunge music and a more negative feel were slowly emerging. It might have been a reaction to the glamour of the 80's as is often the case; decades that follow eachother are often like waves. Times do change all the time and so did Vice. Not surprisingly in the 90s and therefore of course the latter part of the 80's (albeit more invisible) the atmosphere would have to reflect somehow in the episodes of Vice as well, and it justly did.
Yes, even Sonny changed to stonewashed jeans and I think it was cool, since it was fitting. I think by then his character and the rest of the world had seen almost every pastel Versace blazer ever made by then, so this more down to earth look still gave a cool answer to the question `what could have been cooler than Sonny in silk blazers?'Well, how about Sonny in jeans? Think of it this way: would it have been fitting, or would it have been almost ridiculous, to have shot season 4 and 5 in the same playful atmosphere as the first three? Come on, Jan Hammer had great soundtracksongs, but the music still continued it's quality. Gloomier atmosphere, gloomier music indeed, but it still was great music, even today, that fitted the shows themselves.
Maybe the reviewers, including myself, cannot get to terms with the fact that in time generations become less and less naive, or in other words, the world becomes more realistic. Something's gained, something's lost. The price for living in more no nonsense times like now is the loss of idealism. The fun in earlier seasons, with Sonny and Crockett making jokes in happy Florida was lost, but what was gained was a good timing in shifting the mood. Vice rightfully adapted to newer days without being trendfollowers and that clearly showed in the last seasons. What was gained as well was more excitement and action in the series, and I don't see how reviewers saw this as superficial or Vice becoming trendfollowers instead of trendsetters. Still even then, there was no better copshow or thrill than Vice.
The moodshift to more serious stuff to me was also that it seemed to act as a realistic mirror of the hopelessness of fighting the drug force, which it still is to this day. I mean, after so many seasons of fighting the 'vice', what did it amount to? A new episode with a new crime to fight. It had to end, or, the 'ennui' had to be shown in the series, as every good series develops, just like any story plot. It might be true the cast was, as reviewers said, 'riding things out' and things were coming to an end. Exactly, and fortunately this same development, or ennui, which reflected in the series themselves was fitting. Drugs is still impossible to fight, and cops like Sonny and Crockett that did their best in more than 100 episodes were likely to have become burne"tt" out. Vice had to end, the only question how.
Atmittedly, especially in the last season it spiralled alsmost to the absurdly cool, with enormous white empty villa's and drugbosses in clothes that would make a video of Bryan Ferry look like the clip of 'cotton eyed joe'.
Sonny and Tubbs indeed became more abstract themselves in this weird atmosphere. Some call this 'one dimensional', but the first three seasons had shown enough introspection of the characters I think. And how about Sonny loosing his wife? That was a character-driven plot to me. Overall, the action, the acting and the music (although changed in style) still gave the series that extra over any other tv series at the time. Ok, it had become decadent, but all good things spiral out of control, especially the unforgettable stuff.
I simply thought Vice, and especially the last season was the best stuff our generation had the privilige to see in it's day when it was still new, with the Burnett episodes shot in eerie night blue, his revenge on the killer of his wife and of course the indeed very emotional end. When Sonny drove off in his white car after shaking so shortly the hand of his partner, not only the 80s were lost forever, but also the best show that has ever aired and it would not have been as good as it was without this season. I would like to steal a quote from the booklet of the Stones 2CD 40 Licks by saying: thanks (Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, Michael Mann) for touching our lives. Although people might say it was only tv, on some very rare occasions, tv transcends itself and defines a definite period in time. Vice did! Even though watching it now will never get you back to times lost, still...go for it!

3 out of 5 stars Where was Don Johnson?.......2007-05-19

Dont Get me wrong, Miami vice is my ALL TIME FAV SHOW. Even though season 5 took a werid turn, just like 4, i still enjoy the mystery and mystque of the show. I really enjoyed seeing don playing a heel in the last episode of season 4 and early in season 5. He plays the bad guys well and you could sense through all the previous seasons that it was eventually going to happen. But when he came back to crockett, what the hell happend? The next episode Heart of Night, only featured don, in a 3 min scene and was never seen again in the episode? How the hell can you have a very climatic 3 shows about our hero going bad and then the next episode deal with a personal issue involving Castillo? It doesnt make sense? Why didnt they go into a major investigation, or at least a trial? But all we see is a 5 min tounge lashing in episode 4 Bad Timing? Then in Borrasca Don isnt even written in? Then to make matters worse "Line of Fire" (which happens to be a great episode) It seems like sonny never went bad and we forget he ever killed anybody? all in all a near poor season. But what saves it from a 2 to a 3 is the stand out episodes, Lost Madonna, and Freefall. My 2 fav episodes of the post 87 year! I dont understand why most of the episodes, don wanst in them? I wonder if there was tension between Don and the shows writers. If you own all 4 seasons then you must get this to complete the collection, cause the 2 hr finale is incredible, but dont buy this unless your a true fan of miami vice.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-07-03

Finally they released this classic show and it its awesome myself bieng a big 70's and 80's TV Show fan. Now let hope all the seasons get release and we don't have to wait a year for the next season

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY !!!!.......2007-06-27

I was glad to finally be able to purchase this on DVD. I watched CHiPs growing up and I loved it. One thing I noticed was that in not one episode did they ever draw their weapons. These were great movies to watch and portrayed a positive image of law enforcement. I think the major networks have missed the boat by taking these types of movies off the air and putting the junk they now call shows on. I am eagerly awaiting season two coming out.

5 out of 5 stars Why can't TV shows STILL be this great!.......2007-06-21

Wow, so I finally hear Chips was coming out on DVD and I thought to myself it's about time! I bought my season one and got it in the mail and let's just say VERY HAPPY!

1. The Box set.. 4 slim slipcases each include 2 disks. The holders are very well made, they keep the discs in place and nice and secure, but at the same time they are very easy to pop out, unlike some other DVD sets I have purchased in the past. I would have liked to maybe have had more liner notes about the series included, which are very little included. All and all though I'm very pleased with the box set itself.

2. Whats on the discs? Well all time classic TV thats what. :) I sat down and watched the first episode that started it all. Whats amazing to me is that after all these years since I last seen Chips on TV when I was much younger (I'm 35 now) many of the scenes in the first episode came back to me just like BAM! The scene in which Ponches bike gets stuck in the glue lol I remember that like it was yesterday! So fun to watch and I must say, they just don't like TV this good anymore in the 2007 times. Yes there are some good shows here and there, but you always have to worry about some foul language, or some offencive scene involved. Here with Chips you have just good clean fun comedy, with a positive messege for kids today and adults as well. If you want to watch some classic TV that you will enjoy years later, as well as TV that you can have your kids enjoy for years to come. Get CHIPS! I can't wait for the other seasons.

Micah.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD.......2007-06-20

It has been a long time, ten years for me, since I saw this show the last time. Therefore I was surprised that the show played in the late 70s. I always assumed that it played in the 80s. The introduction to selected episodes by Erik Estrada are great but I would have liked some commentaries by the cast on select episodes. I am really glad however that they got Erik Estrada to sit down and talk about the show. There are so many older and even a few more recent shows like Charmed being released on DVD without any extras. The picture quality for a show this old is ok in my opinion.

This show is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun to watch. Sometimes too funny!.......2007-06-19

I loved this show. Always looked forward to watching it back then. I only remember a handful of episodes I got to watch, surely less than half of all that aired in its 6-year run. I'd watch it whenever I could, but admittedly I'd moved on to something else by the time it went off in 1983. The episodes in Season 1, I don't remember seeing any at all (ditto for Season 6 sans Larry Wilcox), but I finally got to see all except the last 3 and enjoyed them all. Will finish this season soon and I believe I'll like the rest too as well. One episode I particularly remember featured, if I remember right, a group of kids running around haphazardly without adult supervision in a big stationwagon, even on the freeway at one point, and this one had Robbie Rist in it (Cousin Oliver on the last season of the Brady Bunch). However, I just learned that he must've appeared in CHiPs before because he was in one episode in this season, about something else. He seemed as short as he was on TBB, but seemed taller in the aforementioned episode.

I forgot how funny the halting closing credits were, but hated this part cuz it meant it's over and I'd have to wait another week for the next episode, even if it's a rerun I'd already seen. Yeah, I still hate them even on DVD, cuz they're so much fun to watch!!! Ahh well, at least I can simply move on to the next episode til I get them all on the DVD I got in the player! Oh, the funniest closings? That'd be the one in episode 4 titled Moving Violation. Seeing poor Ponch's frightened face really cracked me up. Priceless!!!

Hopefully the rest of the series will come out, too. Will get them all if I can!

The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of The Muppet Show holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of The Muppet Show's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the Show's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. Season One finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. A half-hour episode can fly by pretty quickly, but it's interesting to note that the series hadn't quite found its familiar tone through much of the first year. A reliance on too many disposable verbal jokes and redundant, so-so material for sketch fodder ultimately gives way to more creative premises and the development of key relationships between characters. By the final half-dozen episodes in the first season, The Muppet Show is truly cooking. Season highlights include Kermit's confession to guest Juliet Prowse that he always wanted to be a dancer, and Prowse's comparison of the little green superstar to Robert Redford. Joel Grey does a cabaret-style act for a roomful of Muppets and is later outraged when Kermit's introduction of the actor proves so thorough there is nothing left for the latter to say. Rita Moreno proves quite game in a funny piece, set in a French cafe, in which her dance with a man-size Muppet turns from romantic to table-smashing violent. Harvey Korman plays bumbling ringmaster Maurice the Magnificent, easily the worst animal trainer in history. Phyllis Diller bats out shameless one-liners ("I sang 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,' and it fell on me"), and Vincent Price toys with his own horror film image by playing a ghoul who turns into a maudlin orchestra conductor at midnight. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars What is there to say? Muppet show rocks!!!.......2007-07-03

Instant hit with 18-month old. We're on a sesame street and muppet show frenzy. And they're fun for mom and dad, too!

5 out of 5 stars pretty darn good deal.......2007-06-26

I went to a consignment shop and found this used for $25. thankfully I already bought this one. With free shipping and at $30 who can refuse? The quality is clear and crisp. Not a single scratch on the dvds. Not even the box was bent from shipment. If you are a fan, you will be very very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars The muppet show is a wonderful thing...........2007-06-25

But, I think they could've all fit on one DVD, not 4.
Too much packaging.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of hitting, exploding, meanness.......2007-06-16

I recently purchased this dvd set thinking it would be wholesome entertainment. Although there are some innocently funny jokes, there is a lot of hitting, bigger monsters eating and hurting smaller monsters, exploding heads and the like. I suppose some people find this funny, I don't. So, beware if you are trying to avoid violent programming. There is a substantial amount of violence throughout these shows.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!.......2007-06-12

I have been a fan of the Muppets since I was a little girl! I remember the first time I saw the little creatures I thought they were real, but when I found out the were puppets and that people brought them to life they somehow became even more magical. The artistry that the performers posess is amazing and the fact that when you watch these episodes you forget they have people under them is proof that magic can happen!
I absolutely LOVE the Muppets and it was a very sad day when Jim Henson passed away. Thought the magic is still there, it's different and with these DVD's you can see the Henson magic all over again and relive the Joy he had in creating this world!

This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Great Lie Lesson for Pinocchio.......2007-05-22

I love Pinocchio when he lies. His nose grew and grew longer and sure gives me an idea how creative author has. It's original powerful animation that Walt Disney has to present. Also I must add when Pinocchio asking the creator Why, Why, and Why and suddenly I asked my parents why Pinocchio asking Why's. A perfect family animation film.

4 out of 5 stars Was my father favorite carttoon !.......2007-04-13

My father loved Disney 's Pinocchio as a child and I still had the video tape of the carttoon in his memory !

1 out of 5 stars My least favorite Disney animation.......2007-04-09

I've enjoyed a lot of classics by Walt himself - Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp etc. But I just cannot bring myself to like Pinocchio. I'm sorry, but it looked like was made for babies, or four or five year olds at the most. Although, even at the age of five, I found it too childish. I've heard some reviewers say that this film is quite dark, but I just cannot believe that! Firstly, they tried too hard on the animation. It was far too saturated. The colour is all screwed up. The acting is poor. The only good well-developed character is Jiminy Cricket. The other characters are very underdeveloped, so I didn't really care what happened to them. They made Pinocchio really sickly sweet, and I didn't feel for him, he was just annoying. The plot is ridiculous. It was just Pinocchio and Jiminy running into one problem after another. Oh, and the donkey scene is not disturbing - it's just plain stupid!

All in all, Pinocchio is only of interest to VERY young children. Otherwise, do not waste your money. If you want a good family film, rent Amblimation's 'Balto' instead.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS NEEDS AN UPGRADED EDITION!.......2007-03-13

This is one of Disney's finest animated features and it has not had a complete restoration done!! Mind boggling! The print here looks like it is direct from VHS. I hope there is a 2 disc Platinum edition coming soon?

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Classic Disney from Years Past.......2007-02-22

This movie is a beautifully-made masterpiece that, very unfortunately, seems to be overlooked sometimes because of other old Disney movies that were made around that time (like Snow White). However, of all the "old" Disney movies (made before the era of Eisner), this is the one that most hits the mark for me. Not only is it an interesting story with involving characters, but the overlooked soundtrack is also quite wonderful. "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" is an old favorite of mine, and not to mention "Little Wooden Head" is a catchy little tune. This is my favorite of the oldies-but-goodies because not only does it completely hit the mark, but it doesn't rely on the old cliche of "princess captured by evil stepmother and then saved later on by a nameless Prince Charming who has no personality whatsoever". Though some of those movies are good, like Snow White, some of them are dull like Cinderella, and this movie doesn't make you make that choice.

Now I haven't always been a fan of this movie; this is more of a "grown-up" movie than many of the others that were made around that time. This is a darker tale than the likes of Snow White, and a more intense and involving one than movies like Cinderella. It also doesn't follow the oft-degraded Disney Formula, because there's no real cookie-cutter "bad guy". And since there's no real cookie-cutter bad guy, it makes it all the more interesting to see four or five villains make their entrances and exits, more like a real-life fairy tale than others. None of the villains "gets what he deserves", like in most Disney movies where they fall to their deaths.

That isn't to say that the other Disney movies aren't good. That is, however, to say that this Disney movie was ahead of its time in its innovations in realistic story developments. Granted, the story itself isn't that realistic, but we all know the story, and can take it for granted. And I'm not saying that the film is COMPLETELY underrated either. Just about everybody's heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", and it truly is a wonderfully sweet tune.

Speaking of which, Jiminy Cricket is a masterpiece of a character if there ever was one. And there are plenty of other great characters in this movie too: the old puppet master, Geppetto, who just wants a real boy; Cleo and Figaro, the domesticated fish and jealous cat; and of course many great villains, including Honest John, Stromboli, Lampwick, and of course Monstro, most of whom are also used for on-the-spot comic relief. But despite the comic relief, there are definitely some scenes that are too scary for the youngsters, including quite a few edgy scenes including the mad old puppeteer Stromboli. However, it's not ALL dark, which is good. There are some very fun, and some laugh-out-loud funny, scenes, both for the youngsters and for the adults.

Overall, this truly is a great movie for anybody, but especially for those who have ever been through the struggle of being a real boy. :)

Based upon T.H. White's beloved novel, this Disney-fied version chronicles the tutoring of the Once and Future King, Arthur, as handled by the magician Merlin. Sword was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upbraiding storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. But there's much to enjoy here as Merlin shows Newt, the young Arthur, things that will help him become the ruler of the Britons. The transformation sequences, where the boy is turned into a fish, a bird, and a squirrel are vintage Disney. The oft-repeated scene of Merlin battling it out with the mean old Madame Mim still is worth a few chuckles, but it belies the problem with most of the film--the scenes are only there for the chuckles. References by Merlin to television and other items of modern life also mar the generally innocuous landscape. Children will like it, but they won't cherish it. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars A good example of early Disney DVD........2007-03-19

When Disney released The Sword In The Stone onto DVD in 2001, Disney had only really gotten into releasing their movies onto DVD within the last two years, starting with their failed Limited Issue line. The Gold Collection followed, with some of the Limited Issues repackaged as Gold Collection titles, and more titles released. Most of these had decent, if not somwhat problematic DVD transfers and few, if any, bonus materials. However, a few of Disney's Gold Collection titles were given decent releases. Among those are the 30th Anniversary Edition of Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Although not officially a Gold Collection title by many people's standards, it says Gold Collection on the spine.) and this 2001 DVD release of The Sword In The Stone.

First off, the film is given a nice transfer here. The DVD case boasts that it's ''fully restored and remastered.'' Although it's not up to par with the Platinum Edition restorations or the Masterpiece Edition of Alice In Wonderland's transfer, it IS far better than many of the other Gold Collection transfers. It's nicely cleaned up, although it's a bit grainier than one would like, and there's still a bit of dirt in the transfer. The colors have been punched up nicely, though. The video transfer here is very satisfying, as is the audio mix.

The disc also includes quite a few good bonus materials. A Sword In The Stone scrapbook features concept art for the film, production photos, character design, concept poster art, official poster art, and more. Two sing-alongs lifted from Disney's Sing-Along Songs video series provide fun captions for two of the film's more memorable songs. Film Facts is...well, basically that. Two animated shorts, ''Knight For A Day'' and ''Brave Little Tailor'' are very entertaining. ''Music Magic: The Sherman Brothers'' has the Shermans talking about songs they wrote for The Sword In The Stone, including a couple that were deleted. (The Shermans also did a Music Magic featurette for Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and that one WAS better, because it also gave a little info on the making of the film, as well as its 1996 restoration.) Finally, an episode of Walt Disney's Disneyland TV series is included - ''All About Magic'' from 1957. Although this isn't directly related to The Sword In The Stone, its inclusion is to be praised nonetheless.

My only disappointment in this DVD is the lack of any sort of theatrical trailer or TV spot. Come on, Disney!

Nonetheless, The Sword In The Stone is a fine example of Disney's earliest attempts to give their movies the deluxe treatment on single-disc DVD releases, reserving their 2-Disc DVD releases for Platinum Editions (This was the year that Snow White's Platinum Edition DVD was released.) and the DVD releases of their most recent animated features. I wholeheartedly recommend this DVD for fans of the film.

I grew up watching Disney's "The Sword In the Stone" myself, and now I get to introduce my kids to that magic! full of fun scenes as Merlin, "the world's most powerful wizard," tutors young king Arthur (an orphan everyone calls "Wart"), there's plenty of madcap magic in this heartwarming "ugly duckling" story.

It's not unusual for the medical community to encounter law enforcement over a hospital bed, but there's something about the Los Angeles Community Hospital and its Chief of Internal Medicine Dr. Mark Sloan (Dick Van Dyke) that seem to attract suspicious cases. Far from a "treat them and street them" attitude, Dr. Mark Sloan is a compassionate and understanding doctor whose probing questions and natural curiosity repeatedly uncover mysterious circumstances and details that he invariably feels compelled to investigate. Of course the proper authorities (in the form of his son, police officer Steve Sloan, played by Van Dyke's real-life son Barry Van Dyke) are notified, but, like any good doctor, Dr. Sloan relies on the expertise of his own staff. Thus fellow Doctor Jack Stewart (Scott Baio), hospital pathologist Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell), and Dr. Sloan's secretary Delores (Delores Hall) are often embroiled in investigative work that results in an understaffed hospital and a distraught hospital administrator (Michael Tucci). From maternity hospitals selling babies on the black market to dishonest tax lawyers, murderous hospital inspectors, egocentric surgery patients, and dating services whose dates are the absolute end-all, Dr. Sloan and his crew can be counted upon to pursue and solve an abundance of mysteries--and maybe even see a patient or two in the process. Guest stars include Betty White and Bo Jackson. While not one of Van Dyke's best television series, Diagnosis Murder will appeal to Dick Van Dyke aficionados and murder mystery fans alike. --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

Emmy award winner Dick Van Dyke stars as Dr. Mark Sloan, a dedicated doctor who dabbles in detective work in Diagnosis Murder. Caring and compassionate, Dr. Sloan enlists the help of his police detective son, Steve (Barry Van Dyke) whenever he suspects one of his patients is the victim of foul play. And he won't rest until the bad guys are put to bed - permanently! Working alongside Sloan is pathologist Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell). For star performances and classic "whodunit" suspense, the right prescription is Diagnosis Murder.

This is one of the best doctor-murder shows of all time. In this season watch Dr. Sloane, go through car troubles and getting his rental car blown up, watch Amanda lose all of her money and Jack trying to get it back for her (and actually does!!!!), Dr. Sloane get accused of murder, and also get locked in a Emergency Room with happy gas, and arrest a girl for muurder, going to court TWICE, without double jepordy. This show is a down heart, good show.Although it is mainly about murders and the sick, Dick Van Dykes character will make you laugh. The show stars Dick Van Dyke (Dr. Mark Sloane), Barry Van Dyke (Lt. Steve Sloane), Scott Baio (Dr. Jack Stewart) and Victoria Rowell (Amanda Bentley) Hope this review was helpfull!!!!

Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers play a pivotal role in director F. Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Good Cast-Good Movie, BRING ON THE SEQUEL!.......2007-06-15

The Italian Job brings to the screen the story of a group of thieves bent on revenge on one of their own who betrayed them by murdering their leader and running off with the gold.
Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sunderland, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, The Italian Job is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars The Italian Review.......2007-06-03

I live right around the corner from a Mini Coop dealership and I'm an Italian-American, so I thought it fitting that I finally rented this movie. It's a remake of the 1969 original starring Michael Caine. Whereas that film took place in Italy, the remake stays there only for the introduction and then swiftly moves to California.

I love heist films. Like Ocean's Eleven or Heat, it's all about the cast. You can see a pattern in the characters:

THE WHEELMAN: This is the guy who mans the getaway vehicle, be it helicopter, jet, or car. Handsome Rob (Jason Statham, my favorite action hero) plays a decidedly scrappy, suave wheelman. This also happens to be almost the exact character from The Transporter. Hopefully, Statham will move beyond this type of character, but it's a testament to action tropes that he can actually be typecast as "the wheelman."

THE TECH: This guy is almost always a nerd and usually the comic relief. Lyle (Seth Green) nails this role and actually steals the show with his jokes. One ad-libbed sequence of Lyle mocking Handsome Rob is the funniest part of the movie. Of course, the challenge with this sort of character is that he needs to be able to pull off seemingly magical feats of technological wizardry without overshadowing the expertise involved. When Lyle manages to take control of the entire traffic system, you really have to wonder if he couldn't be better off striking out on his own. He's almost too good for the movie.

THE DEMOLITIONIST: The demolitionist's job is to blow things up. Sometimes he's a homicidal maniac, other times he's cool and collected. Left Ear (Mos Def) is a cool customer. And he doesn't like dogs. He gives Lyle competition for the funniest line in the movie:

Left Ear: This dude got dogs. I don't do dogs... I had a real bad experience, man.
Charlie Croker: What happened?
Left Ear: I had. A bad. Experience.

THE OLD MAN: You've seen this guy before. He's probably the former leader of the group. He's seen too much, been around the block too many times, and he knows his days are numbered. He just wants one last, big heist so he can retire forever. He almost always dies in the film. That pretty much sums up John Bridger (Donald Sutherland).

THE HOT CHICK: A recent invention, the hot chick's purpose is to keep men interested. She can have a variety of roles (tech, wheel-err-woman, demolitionist). Sometimes she has her own unique set of skills as safecracker. That's John's daughter, Stella (Charlize Theron), who competes admirably in the sea of testosterone.

THE LEADER: Handsome, smart, a safecracker himself, this guy is the one who pulls off a sneaky job right under the bad guys' noses. Unfortunately, Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) is more narrator than anything else. He seems to have very little to do, and that's a shame, because Wahlberg's talented enough to do much more.

The villain is Steve (Edward Norton) a thief turned bad. He knows all of our protagonists' tricks, so he knows how to counter them. And since he stole the gold from the original Italian Job, he's the perfect foil. Norton plays him with just the right amount of shifty-eyed sleaze.

The Italian Job has lots of cool car chases, lots of near misses, and a lot of twists and turns (literally and figuratively) that make it a brisk, entertaining movie. You get quickly caught up in the machinations of the characters, which allows the film to get away with a lot of unbelievable nonsense. But who cares? From the funky flashbacks to the quippy asides, it's clear that Italian Job doesn't take itself too seriously.

Although it's more Job than Italian, the Italian Job is still a fun ride.

4 out of 5 stars Great Caper Film.......2007-05-14

This is a good cast and a fun story, and what I really like about it is not everything they do works for them the first time, so it seems more realistic that way. There's suspense and action and great characters. Theron and Wahlberg play off each other well and are both great actors as is most of the cast. I highly recommend this if you are into the "root for the theif" type of movie. It's one of those movies where everyone's a bad guy and you get to root for the anti-hero. Oh and Edward Norton plays a great bad guy. You really love to hate this jerk.

Nothing unique, but loads of fun.

3 out of 5 stars A F.I.N.E. Movie.......2007-03-14

The Italian Job was fun to watch. It was a good double-cross/revenge story that kept me thoroughly entertained all the way through.

Kudos to Director F. Gary Gray for making such a good feature film when his directorial resume mostly consists of rapper videos. Gray's other most recent notable feature films were 2005's flop sequel to the classic Get Shorty (1995) and 2003's A Man Apart (which I have not seen).

Storywise, The Italian Job really worked well. It had a good flow that kept you interested. There were way too many of the typical over the top Hollywood action film sequences that are just plain old unbelievable: cars driving down busy sidewalks at high speed; driving through a busy subway; people surviving sure-death situations; absolutely zero police response to what would realistically summon a cavalry of cops...these kinds of surreal action take a bit away from the movie.

The cast is pretty good, and the acting is very good. The story is familiar enough as it is popular throughout the history of film: A heist is made by a group of thieves/one of the crooks goes rogue/the group seeks revenge.

So if the genre is up your alley, then by all means The Italian Job should work for an evening of entertainment. And if you like it, you're in luck....A sequel has been announced for 2008 called The Brazilian Job with (mostly) the same cast and director (the most important aspects in a recipe for a successful sequel).

Let's hope in the sequel that Gray keeps a better handle on reality. I'm sure that it'll be F.I.N.E.

4 out of 5 stars steadily satisfying entertainment.......2007-03-11

As a veteran action-flick fan, I found this film very satisfying on all fronts: the plot was believable and coherent, the bad guy was compellingly evil and arrogant; the technology was current and appropriate, the settings - specially Venice - were interesting, the female lead (Theron) was sexy and a nice mix of feminine, seductive, vengeful, and hard-nosed; the main and suppoorting characters were clearly-drawn, human, and interesting, the violence/action scenes were well spaced and paced, And the (classic) ending was predictable and still satisfying. I commend the writers, producer, and director for maintaining a steady level of "What's going to happen next?" suspense throughout the flick. Worth investing in, if you're an action fan!

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23

David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.

Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.

Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.

One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time

3 out of 5 stars Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13

Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09

A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-30

This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

2 out of 5 stars Very ordinary..........2007-03-23

This was a critically lauded film, so when I went in, I had high expectations. Roger Ebert himself called it a masterpiece. I saw it, and it was certainly interesting, but I immediately forgot about it right after I left the theater. There really isn't much depth here. It's more reminiscent of getting a quick rush from something, then after it wears off, you don't even remember how you felt afterwards. I remember a scene where a cow is blown up, but other than that, it's hard for me to remember anything about it. It ultimately was very ordinary, and not a really deep film about war.

This story of a winsome orphan and his guardian dragon features an Academy Award-nominated score and song, Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water." The combination of a live-action story with an animated figure was innovative in 1977, and the green dragon with pink wings will still charm youngsters today. However, its plot has the boy running from a nasty family to whom he's been sold into slavery, as well as an evil magician who tries to steal the dragon for his parts. These dark story lines may scare or bore younger children, who only want to see Elliot the dragon belch fire and give Pete rides on his back. And older children who might appreciate the plot may scoff at the relatively crude animation. This leaves a rather narrow audience window of about ages 3 to 7. A cast of veterans includes Shelley Winters, Mickey Rooney, and Red Buttons, who all turn in the hammiest of performances. Acting newcomer Reddy demonstrates both why her acting career never took off and why her singing career did. (Lines like "You're a bunch of superstitious ding-dongs" don't give her much help.) However, her sometimes awkward performance as the lonely lighthouse keeper who gives the boy a home provides the film with its heart. Bottom line: it's a keeper for diehard Disney fans, dragon lovers, and those who remember this movie fondly from their childhood. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Then, when crooked salesmen try to capture Elliott for their own gain, Pete must attempt a daring rescue.

5 out of 5 stars Best Season.......2007-04-25

This is Miami Vice's best season - at least to me. The stars, music and Testerosa all come to together for insiteful and consistent episodes each week. And I appreciate the improved packaging so I don't have to flip DVD's to watch more. Any Vice fan needs Season 3.

5 out of 5 stars A Flawless season!.......2007-04-16

I am new with this show since I never watched it in the 80's since I was pretty young. I bought the first 2 seasons and I thought they were cool and sexy but didn't make me say "that was awesome". They were sometimes cool yet cheesey. This season however is 100% cool with great stories, great drama and top notch car chases and shoot-outs. There's even so many appearances by well known actors that it's hard to list them all.

You have Wesley Snipes as a pimp, Bill Paxton as an undercover cop, Helen Bohen Carter as a doctor Crockett is dating who just happens to do drugs behind his back, Steve Buscemi, Charles S. Dutton, Willy Nelson, Liam Neeson, Viggo Mortensen, Benicio Del Toro and Brad Dourif. There's also drama when a member of their team dies. Larry is killed by boxing promoters while undercover as a boxer/trainer and it's made to look like a drug overdose. Crockett and Tubbs have to clear his name so he's not remembered as a junky. Forget the new movie, it's lame and dead in the water next to how entertaining and well done the show is.

5 out of 5 stars Down for the Count Part 1: Best Episode of the Series.......2007-04-13

This was the season I was waiting for it has the best episode of the series. Down for the Count Part 1 is my favorite episode. It has some of the best music and fine acting by John Diehl. He's the heart and soul of the episode. I highly recommend getting this season.
