Description

A lavish weekend party in a venerable old house promises to be frightfully jolly. Punting and pranks top the agenda until one morning a late sleeper doesn't wake up at all. Another death, whispers of a secret society called the Seven Dials and stolen state secrets thicken the plot. Feisty Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent (Cheryl Campbell) runs her roadster right into the middle of the mystery and teams up with charming "man about town" Jimmy Thesiger (James Warwick) to find the fiends. Full of sly Christie wit, this ingenious mystery also features Sir John Gielgud in top form as Bundle's distracted but indulgent father.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Agatha is always fun.......2007-01-04

Probably less well known than her other works, this story of murder and espionage will keep you guessing until the end. Strong acting, along with some Brit stereo types make this a fun film. John Gielgud is priceless. If you are a Tommy and Tuppence fan, James Warwick is here on the trail of the guilty party. I highly recommend this film

1 out of 5 stars A weak version of an old fashioned murder mystery.......2006-07-05

As devoted fans of Agatha Christie and owning many of the Hercules Poirot Series as well as all the Miss Marple mysteries, we wre sorry to see this treated as more farce than murder mystery and consequently found the actors and the acting fluffily light.

2 out of 5 stars What in the world were they thinking about?!?.......2006-03-19

They surely weren't thinking about making a quality movie of any sort! This has to be the absolute worst Christie movie of all time. I could have videotaped something better in my back yard -- and, by the way, be ready for that actuality because it looks like videotape and not film. "Badly acted" doesn't even come close in this flick. Folks, the only reason I'm giving this one 2 stars instead of one is because the genesis of this film came from Agatha Christie. I've read everything she's written and I don't think she'd be proud of this cobbled-up, aimless mess. Unless you absolutely must own everything of "Christie", I suggest that you skip this one and go for the old B&W Miss Marple Series (which was great!). This alleged film is a real dog!

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but a little too light-weight.......2006-01-08

It all starts with a jolly weekend in a country house for a group of friends. However, when one of them turns up dead, apparently by suicide, it begins to look like something is up. As Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent (played by Cheryl Campbell) and Jimmy Thesiger (James Warwick) begin to investigate the death, another chum turns up with a bullet hole in him. There's something dreadfully sinister going on, and a secret organization called "The Seven Dials" seems to be at the heart of it! But, there's even more going on here than meets the eye. The heroes of this adventure will have to keep their eyes and minds open if they intended to save the day! [Color, released in 1982 with a running time of 2:20.]

Overall, I found this to be a charming mystery. It's got several dead bodies in it (there always has to be a murder in a mystery to give it zest), and a complicated story that will leave you guessing as to the identity of the murderer, right up to the end. Now, admittedly, unlike the almost contemporaneous Joan Hickson-Miss Marple and David Suchet-Poirot movies, there is no actor in this movie who gives it the gravitas that it deserves. Instead, it seems a little too light-weight, with happy banter and too little seriousness.

But, that said, I did enjoy this movie. It's got a nice and complicated mystery, and I was as surprised as the characters when the murderer was unveiled. If you like a good mystery, then I highly recommend this DVD to you!

5 out of 5 stars Why is Lady Eileen Brent called "Bundle"?.......2005-11-11

The era 1920's the plays a country house where diplomats are staying. Soon a mission to evaluate a new material that is vital to aviation.

Gerry Wade (Robert Longden) seems to be a late sleeper it makes one thing that he may be dead when the story starts. Well his friends with the help of an extraordinarily smart Rupert 'Pongo' Bateman (James Griffiths) bring in eight alarm clocks to help Gerry wake up. Looks like they may have been a tad late with their scheme.

People are starting to die. Marquis of Caterhan (John Gielgud) wants to know why his daughter Lady Eileen 'Bundle' Brent (Cheryl Campbell) ran over a man Ronny Devereux (John Vine) and shot him. As the man is dying he mentions "the seven Dials" and Jimmy Thesiger (James Warwick). She assumes that she is meant to tell Jimmy of the something or someone called the seven dials. From there the plot thickens.

The seven dials theme plays through the whole story. We see it in clocks and clock towers; it turns up on paper and dieing breath. Is it a location or a cabal and does it really have something to do with the mystery?

As with many of Agatha Christies stories there are so many characters that you need a score card. Also there seems to be plots inside plots. Everyone could have done it and yet it is always the last person you suspect; or should I say usually the last person you would suspect. The film was adapted from the Novel by Pat Sandys, has the added benefit of the feeling that it is a play.

The film is packed with well known British actors and sometimes it is hard not to think now where have I seen this person before. Noticeably absent is Francesca Annis, yet the main female character player Cheryl Campbell is well remembers for her role in The Murder at the Vicarage (1986). John Gielgud excelled in his part as Marquis of Caterhan.

3 out of 5 stars Something WEIRD!.......2007-06-10

3 stars for Mantis In Lace,4 for the rest of the disc. Lila! Get use to that tune,it'll probably stick with you forever. Every previous review has told all there is to know.I actually think the two cops are the best actors of the crew.
I watched it once,it took two attempts;got very bored and put it on pause. Watched it again and it grew on me. I'll have to be in a very strange mood to watch it again.
The extras are the good stuff. I think the cage girl is the original pole-dancer! The LSD film by the Inglewood cops is interesting, but the birth-defects pics ruined a very good..uh,mood.
My review is all over the place, but then again,so is this disc.

3 out of 5 stars Sex & LSD a Go Go.......2004-08-09

"Mantis in Lace" asks the question: Can a movie have too much topless go go dancing? In the case of this late `60s sexploitation epic, the answer is a resounding yes! To be fair, "Mantis in Lace" was made before the cinematic barriers came crashing down in the 1970s, so I guess jiggling mammaries were still considered pretty risqué. Yet I'm sure even the members of the raincoat crowd of 1968 had to be checking their watches halfway into this leaden mix of sex, LSD and murder.

As the go go dancer Lila ("Lila" was this movie's alternate title), Susan Stewart has a vague English (maybe Dutch?) accent, à la Dolly Read from "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," and an acting style akin to John Waters' late star Edith Massey. After dancing her set, she picks up a "hippie" (you can tell he's a hippie because he's wearing a dorky earring that resembles a homemade Christmas ornament) and takes him back to a warehouse owned by her father. They drop acid and have tepid sex on a mattress, while Lila sees all the swirling colors that signify all cinematic acid trips of this time period. But when she thinks she's being force-fed bananas (?) she freaks and stabs her faux-hippie one-night-stand in the back with a screwdriver, then hacks him to bits with a meat cleaver that happens to be handy. Then it's time for more topless go go dancing! The whole movie follows this pattern: Lila dances, picks up a man, does acid, freaks during sex and kills him. In between the go go dancing and LSD carnage are scenes of two "Dragnet"-style cops investigating (poorly) the murders. There's also one "casting couch" scene, apropos of nothing, in which an aspiring stripper--who looks like Kate Mulgrew--has sex with a bar owner (the only scene to give a flash of female full-frontal nudity and a bare male backside). Through it all we repeatedly hear the theme song, "Lila," so hypnotically awful you'll remember it long after you've forgotten the movie.

Despite its problems, "Mantis in Lace" does have its charm. The camera work by Lazslo Kovacs is excellent, giving this cheap movie a more polished look than it deserves. Pat Barrington has a small part as a belly-dancing stripper, and while she's not a much better actress than Stewart, she's certainly a more interesting one. The movie's concept is a pretty inspired mix for its time, if only director William Rotsler had used the premise to its fullest potential, starting with a real script. The Something Weird DVD release features an alternate "LSD murder scene" that's a lot more interesting than the one in the final film. There also are 100 minutes of outtakes, and while their inclusion seems like a good idea, I defy anyone to sit and watch these scenes--which, other than featuring a bit more blood and yet another go go dancer, differ little from what's in the final cut--without hitting fast forward. Rounding out the extras are an LSD scare film, a tedious LSD-themed nudie loop/morality tale, and a short featuring a crazed-looking stripper writhing about in a bamboo cage.

3 out of 5 stars The good scenes are amazing.......2004-02-23

Mantis in Lace is a very mixed bag. You would think that a sexploitation / mad-slasher movie combined with the LSD subculture of the 60's would be a great idea -- and it is. But nearly half of this movie consists of extended scenes of strippers performing in the club or "trying out" on the casting couch. One can't help but feel that they only had enough time and budget to shoot half a movie and needed to pad it to get to a feature length running time.

With that said, the scenes where Lila trips out on acid and kills her prey are outstanding. Laszlo Kovacs was the cinematographer and it's easy to see that he would go on to shoot such classics as Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces. Susan Stewart is a remarkably bad actress who can't deliver a line to save her life or even pass herself off as a mediocre stripper. But she's very cute and she has a certain charm that prevents her lack of talent from completely ruining the movie.

The DVD presentation of the movie is in full frame (1.33:1). The picture quality is outstanding for a 35 year old low-budget movie. The outtakes are actually longer than the movie itself, and it appears that there may have been a version of this movie that was far bloodier the the final cut that's presented her.

There are three short films on the DVD as extras, two of which are great time capsule relics from the 60's. "LSD: Trip or Trap!" is a 19-minute film produced by the Inglewood Police Department to warn youth of the dangers of LSD. It's sort of a 1960's version of Refer Madness. The second, "Alice Goes to Acidland", is a 12-minute nudie acid trip that almost defies description.

4 out of 5 stars response to the VIEWER from Deluth.......2003-08-03

You can't compare this film to THe WALL. Here is my opinion(if u want it). People who are born from the 1980's on should NEVER compare a film they just recently watched from today's standards. The WALL was a film concerning a band member who was mentally ill and abused by his parents. Mantis in Lace (however)is a time period picture. You(as the saying goes) had to be there in the 60's experimenting with LSD and drugs (San Francisco/Haight Astbury area). In order to appreciate the fullness of the film. The two films are completely different! I, on the otherhand enjoyed this film. Hilarious, entertaining and very similar to Jack Nicholson's THE TRIP. Mantis is no better then The WALL. Both films are good but come from different decades.

5 out of 5 stars One Psychedelic Trip.......2003-01-24

First of all, kudos to Something Weird Video for the Special Edition DVD release of "Mantis in Lace". SWV has done an excellent job with this DVD. I have never seen this movie before and I've wanted to buy this DVD for some time. I really love this film. I like the way it was filmed. The lighting or lack of lighting, on most of the scenes are great. The lack of lighting makes the film look like a film noir. The scenes where Lila is tripping out on acid are excellent. The colors and the geometric designs that are lighted on the actor's faces are fantastic. The director of photography, Laszlo Kovacks, has done an excellent job of capturing the psychedelic imagery to the screen. The acting is just awful, but that's what makes the film great. The movie is 87 minutes long. It was filmed between November 18-25 of 1967 and released in theaters and drive-ins in 1968. The psychedelic music sounds like early unreleased Pink Floyd recordings. It uses tapes that were cut up and then edited back together at random, backwards tapes, heavy echo, laughter, and strange music. The theme to the movie is really corny, but I found myself playing it over and over again. It's kind of like a train wreck, you don't want to look, but you know you just have to. The special edition DVD includes the original theatrical trailer of the film, an alternate psychedelic murder scene which is the same as the first murder scene, but more psychedelic designs are superimposed to the original scene. Things like fireworks going off, more geometric psychedelic designs, negative exposure of go-go girls dancing, and a fat man in a black mask holding bananas and dollar bills in his hands. The DVD also includes over 100 minutes of out takes, deleted and alternate scenes from the film. This feature doesn't have any sound, but the music and sound effect tapes from "Mantis in Lace" is dubbed in so you can hear the music and effects without the dialog. It's like having the original soundtrack on the DVD. This section also features a much longer version of the movie's theme. The funny thing is that some of the music that is in "Mantis in Lace" is also in the movie "Mondo Mod". This is because the same man, Harry Novack, produced both films. The DVD also includes The following archival short subject films:
1. Sid Davis's classic classroom scare film "LSD: Trip or Trap?"
2. "Alice Goes To Acidland"
3. "Girl in a Cage" Why this short film is added, I don't know why. It doesn't relate to the rest of the DVD.
4. A gallery of Harry Novack Exploitation movie poster art with Harry Novack radio-spot rarities.
If you want to know what an underground psychedelic/sexploitation/exploitation film is, this is the film to watch. I highly recommend it. I am very pleased with "Mantis in Lace. It's everything I thought it would be. This DVD will be played a lot on my DVD player. It's now one of my three favorite DVDs. I am not disappointed with "Mantis in Lace". This is psychedelia at its best. They don't make movies like this anymore. By the way, does anyone know what ever happened to Susan(Lila)Stewart? She's a real H-O-T-T-I-E.

Looking for plenty of sex, violence, and lowbrow comedy? If you are, you could do a lot worse (or is it a lot better?) than to visit Club Dread, a boldly wretched excuse for broad comedy perpetrated by the Broken Lizard troupe--the same guys who brought their potty-mouthed brand of lunacy to bear on 2002's Super Troopers. That alone should serve as ample warning or invitation, depending on your tolerance for way-too-casual sketch comedy, stitched together with an emphasis on big, gross laughs and enough female frontal nudity to give Girls Gone Wild a run for its money. It all takes place on Coconut Pete's Pleasure Island, where Pete (Bill Paxton, slumming it with infectious abandon) holds court while scantily clad vacationers play crazy games (life-size Pac-Man, anyone?) and provide easy prey for a slasher on the loose. Ah, but there's the rub: Is this schizoid movie a comedy or a horror flick? It's both... and neither... and the bloodletting is surprisingly extreme amidst all the poop and fart jokes. Of course, that won't stop Club Dread from finding its audience. We know you're out there…and you know who you are. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars this is a good movie!.......2007-07-03

dispite what you may have heard in the other reveiws this is a good movie.
most people were expecting a bloody slasher flick. but this movie is more
of a comedy than it is horror. it also has almost all of the characters from super troopers. it is not as funny as super troopers but still has
some laughs in it. if you are a person who likes movies that are hated by other people you will love this movie! trust me!

5 out of 5 stars Stupidly Funny .......2007-05-09

Love this movie. Goes great with Supertroopers and Beerfest. A nice trifecta!

3 out of 5 stars Meh... .......2007-04-03

You can't ever be too hard on spoofs, because they are written to be horrible mockeries of whatever genre they are slamming. That being said, 'Club Dread' is only a moderately entertaining movie.

Horrible story line, bad accents, and tons of cheese fill this movie to the brim. Of course its all intentional, but I think that some measures could have been taken to make this a little better. For one, the killer's name is Machete Phil, and personally, I think at least Dr. Phil woud have been better. But the name aside, this spoof is pretty low on witty humor which could've been more abundant. There where only a couple of parts where I actually laughed aloud, and considering 'Super Troopers' was pretty good, I had expected to get a little more than a couple of laughs.

This is overall a mildly entertaining spoof, but I'd suggest even the Scary Movies over this.

3 out of 5 stars Falls a bit short but still some great scares and laughs........2007-03-27

I wanted to give this one a try after seeing Super Troopers, another Broken Lizard film. While Club Dread falls short compared to the comical impact of Super Troopers, it does have some hidden gems and may appeal to most Broken Lizard fans. These guys are just the kings of brainless humor.

I'm a fan of horror/comedies and this one does an okay job. The scares work, and there are a few parts where you'll actually find yourself inching toward the edge of your seat, but not necessarily on the edge of it. One reviewer mentions Shaun of the Dead in their Club Dread review. There is no comparison. In no way does Club Dread reach the caliber of Shaun of the Dead, which is one of the funniest, and scariest horror/comedies I've ever seen.

Club Dread is funny in some parts, scary in some parts, and I will watch it again (someday) because it is entertaining. But it is not one of the best horror/comedies I've ever seen, and can't be lumped in with the likes of Shaun of the Dead. Club Dread is campy, dumb, full of sexual innuendo and drunk partiers. It works on its own level. Come on, we're talking about Broken Lizard here.

The drawbacks of the film are Jay speaking in a faux British accent while wearing a dreadlock wig. I was expecting a more caribbean sounding accent, but after a while it grew on me and was just as dumb and comically effective as the rest of the stuff.

I've seen better, but I've seen much worse too.

4 out of 5 stars Hey, Broken Lizard Can Do No Wrong in My World . . ........2007-01-05

The problem with this film is that it falls into a narrow, narrow film niche: horror-comedy. Many horror fans will loathe the fact that the film parodies common tropes of the genre . . . many comedy fans may not "get" the parody itself. Thus, you have the wildly mixed reviews that you find here.

Personally, I found this work hysterical (but I love goofy films like Idle Hands, Evil Dead, and April Fool's Days). Bill Paxton portrayal of a Jimmy Buffet "wannabe" is spot-on!! Moreover, it was refreshing to see Kevin Heffernan fearlessly tackle a character completely different from Farva: a spiritual masseur! Still, Jay Chandrasekhar steals the show not merely because he is one of the most handsome men in existence, but because his character of Putnam is RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY!!

If you don't "get" why Shaun of the Dead was so uproariously funny, this film may leave you confused and disappointed. Still, you should buy it for the Pac-Man scene alone!!! And, no, it's not Super Troopers . . . BUT WHAT IS??! It is just a silly film . . . exactly what it was intended to be!! On that level, it succeeds!!

Just give this film a chance:) (And buy Beerfest too!!)

5 out of 5 stars Traci was the real rebel.......2006-10-02

Out of all the women, the character Traci played, was the real rebel in the movie. She stood her ground until the end. The others killed and decided to get all self-righteous the end of the movie. It's a campy horror film that is not to be taken seriously.

4 out of 5 stars much better than I thought.......2006-08-12

I watched this on TV out of boredom, expected to channel-flip it off quickly... but found myself laughing... it is a 'black comedy'. In my opinion, comedy is hard to do, I've seen many fall flat even with tried-and-true stars and writers, but this one worked for me. (But maybe my sense of humor is a little more blacker than others.) True, dialogue is a bit hard to hear in some places and the ending could've been done a little bit better, but all in all, it was worth my time.

1 out of 5 stars awful.......2006-07-26

It's awful. I shouldn't have let my friend talk me into watching it. Traci is hideous and waxen.

5 out of 5 stars Traci Lords mesmerizing.......2004-06-02

A thrilling B-movie, with a fascinating performance by Traci Lords. She plays Laura, the spiritual leader of a Killing Club of three ladies. They rid themselves of some annoying men.

'The killing club's well-built plot shows ruthless Laura, having increased trouble to inspire her companions into another new murder. In the end the three of them inevitably split up, Laura moving out of Los Angeles. Her two companions stay behind, one of them writing a succesful novel about their shared experiences.

Six month later we see these two ladies reflect on their adventures with Laura, concluding they don't really miss her. At the same time Laura is shown somewhere in Arizona, taking off in a cab. No doubt on her way to a new horror plot.

3 out of 5 stars " Killing Club isn't a Bad film for a B movie".......2003-04-01

This movie is a 2002 film and it is starring Tracy Lords! I have to actually say that I thought this movie would have turned out horrible. But it actually had a entertaining quality about it. The DVD'S sound and picture quality was very good, I thought for a B movie. Basically the premise of the story a woman kills her husband by accident. He was actually a jerk so it wasn't like he was missed in the film. She actually didn't miss him after the brutal death in the film. "Traci Lords" which was a friend of the girls came by and noticed there was blood on the wall and helps her hide the body. From there Traci developes a lust to kill men and decides to bring together a Club. Which she states in her own words "This is more exciting that the Girl Scouts!" Which consist of 3 women that go on a spree of haunting men down who are desrespectful in anyway. Well, actually the other two women are not confortable with the situation. Traci who is the ring leader forces and some what orhestrates all of the murders. Soon she turns against her own friends with threats that if the don't they will end up the same way. The movie inspires alot of comic relief it has a lot of high points and some low points. Over all Traci's performance was good but her facial expressions and pristine gestures made you feel she was posing for the camera. Her lip movements made you think she was powting even when she was just conveying a simple point. The perverted mortician scene is the funniest of all the killings it was completely uproarious! The movie is a definite watcher at least one time then put it away for a while. I think Traci is a very exotic looking woman she reminds me alot of Jaime Pressly. There was one more down point about the film even though the characters and acting was Quirky. I think the director over did trying to convey how horrible her husband was before the accident. I mean he had a short time to convey his point but I feel it could have been done better. The husband seemed a bit too harsh I mean his character was almost cartoonish and unrealistic to some degree. Over all though this movie isn't bad it will make you laugh. It is kinda similiar to Very bad things" but not as good. Christian Slater's character "Boyd" was way more philisopical and uproarious than Traci's character.
