As a screenwriter, Shane Black made millions of dollars from screenplays for the big-budget action movies Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, among others. With his directing debut Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Black mocks and undercuts every cliche he once helped to invent. While fleeing from the cops, small time hood Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr., Wonder Boys) stumbles into an acting audition--and does so well he gets taken to Hollywood, where--pursuing a girl he loved in high school (foxy Michelle Monaghan, North Country)--he gets caught up in twisty murder mystery. His only chance of getting out alive is a private detective named Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, Wonderland, The Doors), who sidelights as a consultant for movies. No plot turn goes untweaked by Black's clever, witty script, and Downey, Kilmer, and Monaghan clearly have a ball playing their screwball variations on action movie stereotypes. There's nothing profound about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but it brings back wicked mischief to a genre that all often takes itself too seriously. --Bret FetzerDescription
In Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a breezy take on writer-director Shane Black's trademark buddy action/comedy oeuvre, a petty thief (Robert Downey Jr.) is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, along with his high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) and a detective (Val Kilmer) who has been training him for his upcoming role.

Italian exploitation legend Umberto Lenzi birthed the cannibal subgenre of Italian horror with Deep River Savages, but he turned out one of the so-called classics of the genre with this 1981 effort, a blunt, brutal story of five New Yorkers who face the wrath of angry Amazon cannibals. Three completely clueless would-be anthropologists set out to disprove the racist myth of tribal cannibalism perpetuated by colonial Europeans. Turning a blind eye to danger at every turn, they join up with a pair of drug-crazed psychos on the run from supposed cannibals (in truth, the reign of terror has been perpetrated solely by greedy Americans) and then wait patiently for the bloody vengeance of the tribal survivors. Lenzi is no stylist, and his attempts at irony are crude at best, but he delivers all he promises (or threatens): evisceration, emasculation, gouged eyeballs, and a sick twist on the initiation scene from A Man Called Horse. His generous budget allowed him to shoot on location in South America and New York (where a police detective searches for the homicidal drug dealer in a subplot) and lavish attention on his carnage, elevating it to near cult status. More than simply gory, this is a sadistic, cynical, mean-spirited film, for hardcore fans of the genre only.Lenzi and star John Morghen (the only animated actor in the otherwise flat cast) offer commentary on an alternate track, but Lenzi is all but unintelligible through his thick accent at times. A supplemental interview with Lenzi is helpfully translated by his interviewer. --Sean Axmaker

Yul Brynner replaces Lee Van Cleef in the title role for 1971's Adios, Sabata, the second and best entry in producer Alberto Grimaldi's spaghetti Western trilogy about the mysterious stranger with an unknown past and a penchant for righteousness, as long as there's serious cash involved. While some fans will miss Van Cleef's iconic performance, Brynner is just as good, even without the tongue-in-cheek attitude affected by the once and future Sabata (Van Cleef took over the part again for Return of Sabata, also released in '71). In fact, with his all-black outfit (replete with open-necked, fringe-bedecked shirt and a ten-foot scarf draped over one shoulder) and gold-plated rifle (equipped with a machine gun-like clip that only enhances his jaw-dropping marksmanship), this is a very cool Yul indeed, notwithstanding a somewhat androgynous vibe (not that there's anything strange about a gunslinger who plays Schubert on the piano, but ). What's more, the film is several notches above both its predecessor (1969's Sabata) and its successor in almost every way; it's wittier, the editing and continuity are superior, the direction's more assured (Gianfranco Parolini, aka Frank Kramer, helmed all three installments), the stunts are more convincing, and the action comes fast and furious (though the fighting scenes aren't especially graphic, the body count is very high). Many of the same actors from the first one reappear here, albeit in different roles, and the story is formulaic--like Sabata, this one involves our hero and his trusty sidekicks attempting to relieve the bad guys of a load of loot that the villains stole in the first place. But Adios, Sabata also has a political element, insofar as the enemy, led by the truly evil Col. Skimmel (Gerard Herter), are occupying Austrians trying to suppress some noble Mexican revolutionaries fighting to keep their country free. As is the case with MGM's DVD releases of all three Sabata movies, there are no bonus features. --Sam GrahamCustomer Reviews:

Mighty Orbots: Trapped on the Prehistoric Planet.......2003-12-17
As I pretty much expected, the years and the increased levels of maturity I've developed in the interim (Maturity? Yeah, RIGHT...) ain't been all that kind to the show. None of the eppies I watched came close to doing justice to what I remembered about 'em. Of course, I was expecting this to happen anyway (InHumanoids, anyone?), but even so I was kinda hopin' it had more than the usual Saturday-morn cartoon silliness that dominated the networks back in the day...
All right, I'm pretty much through boring you to death with the backstory; let's get on with it. Near as I can gather, "Mighty Orbots" is a show meant for young'uns who were a bit too young-- or lacked the attention span-- for Voltron or the Transformers. And, as expected, each eppie's chock-full of the sorta cornball quips, one-liners, and witticisms one has come to expect from the Saturday-morning 'toonage of the time. Throw in the usual establishing shots and a minimum of two robot-team-merging-into-Mighty-Orbots sequences to help save the writers from having to script an extra couple minutes worth of dialogue, and you've got a colorful and rather dumb show that breezes by so quickly, each half-hour segment feels like it runs for just five minutes.
Like a few of its contemporaries, Mighty Orbots features a "cute sidekick"-- a toddler-sized female 'bot who likes to boss the team around. She utters, "Oh, no!"-- her big catch-phrase, as well as her name-- whenever she's surprised, indignant, or momentarily fear-stricken. She's kinduva cross-breed of Snarf from 'ThunderCats' and Angelica from 'Rugrats', with a touch of sickly-sweet Hello Kitty-esque cuteness mixed in, poured into a metal shell, and left to set. And where would the show be without the narration of "beautiful downtown Burbank's" very own Garry Owens to help keep you caught up on the action, and move ya from setting to setting with the quasi-urgent uttering of "meanwhile..."?
Oops, almost forgot to mention another recurring gimmick: the inventor and leader of this team has this whole Clark Kent/Superman-style dual identity thing goin' on. As soon as the main man changes from his uniform to a lab coat, and he throws on the specs, he becomes a brilliant but geeky research scientist who no one would even remotely suspect of being a dashing heroic type, despite his almost uncanny resemblance to Orbots Leader! Which is kinduva bummer when, in just about every eppie, he (as the geeky scientist) makes many a fruitless effort to get a relationship going with the daughter of the United Planets' leader, who only has eyes for his alter-ego. Needless to say, it looks like our beloved sci-guy's not the ONLY one who needs glasses...
And now, my thoughts on this particular eppie: I knew I was in for a pretty silly time when the show's main locale was a planet called Evilon, AKA "The Prehistoric Planet". Now it might be due to the fact that my intelligence level is above that of the average 80s adventure cartoon character, but whenever I hear about a planet called 'Evilon', that's pretty much my cue to steer clear! But, being the heroic sorts they are, the Orbots just HAVE to go and rescue some asteroid deflector shield thingy that the heavy of the week (some shrimpy green-skinned alien dude with a Galactus-like mental telepathy helmet named (surprise) Mentalis) stole in order to spring a trap for our heroes to get out of, and then save the day in the nick of time. Which is what they manage to do of course. I'd go into further detail, but I feel you should discover the finer points of this particular episode for yourself. That, and I'm gettin' a bit bored with it all, and I don't really feel much like writing any further. So, if you are interested in checking this one out-- well, all I can say is, good luck finding a rental place that has this in stock...

Put A Stake Through This DVD's Heart.......2003-11-09
The premise is basic. When their driver has a heart attack, a busload of tourists find themselves stranded in a strange, out of the way village. How strange is it? Well, it's so strange that so-called actress Helga Line lives there. As the "mysterious countess," Helga has big hair, big eyes, big fangs, and a big interest in having juicy-looking men over for dinner. Soon odd things begin to happen: there are screams in the night, dripping blood, etc. You get the picture.
The direction is fairly non-existent, and while my friend calls it "atmospheric," I felt the cinematography consisted largely of pointing a camera at random in the vain hope that something interesting might happen in front of it. As for the DVD quality, I've seen better and I've seen worse--but when a film is offered in its original widescreen ratio and you feel like you wouldn't be missing anything if it were in pan-and-scan, well, that pretty much says it all. That aside, you have your choice of the original Spanish language or badly dubbed English and a "photo gallery" of dubious interest.
If your taste runs to such drive-in delights as CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS, you might actually enjoy this film. But even so, this is one orgy that you won't be afraid to write home to Mom about, and while I frequently shut my eyes during the film I promise you it wasn't from fright. Final word: drive a stake through this DVD without opening the box.

An impressive cast throws their combined actorly muscle behind this exploration of the war of the sexes. Michael (Joe Mantegna) doesn't understand why the new car he bought for his wife Dana (Christine Lahti) has sent her into an emotional tailspin; frustrated and confused, he and his friend Bruce (Paul Reiser) decide to blow off steam by going to a strip club--unfortunately, Dana returns home just as the men are setting off. She follows and is appalled by what she finds, setting off a far more serious marital crisis for both couples. What starts out as a middle-aged version of American Pie turns into an honest attempt to grapple with the troubles of a long marriage. The conclusion is dubious, but Women vs. Men has some thoughtful moments along the way and the cast keeps the scenes lively--Lahti and Glenne Headly (as Bruce's wife) are particularly good. --Bret FetzerDescription

OK, so here I am not only in charge of ordering videos, my boss now asks me to take the video home and to review it. OK this movie was not bad at all. I just dread in the future taking home sleepers (if you know what I mean)
The movie:
The initial scene sets the stage of the movie which is basically a husband that got depressed when his wife ran off after an argument. Basically we now have an upset husband who's friend asks him to go out and forget about the argument to a strip bar. It just happens his wife follows him there. Thus, we have a very simple story, jealous wife, and conversations that reside over this argument. If you're looking for action, adventure, mystery or anything else, you might want to look somewhere else. This might have turned me off at the inset of the movie when I found out where it was leading. So my main concern, for my life at the job, was to review the offensive content. A few minutes into the movie was about as far as it went. The strip club which included a lap dance with each husband was the content of the complaint. For those of you who do not know what a lap dance is, it is a dance where the clothes of the dancer usually comes off. For those of you who know the Lambada, it's one step more or should I say it's 1 piece of article less. I don't want to get too explicit here but there is nothing to get explicit about. That was the extent of it. Talking from a guy who has seen other movies with 10 times more vulgarity or more explicit sexual content, I'd have to say that it was nothing more than a quick view. I believe that patron played off the anger of the wife who was kind of unbelievable in my eyes. My personal opinion is that she was a little too concerned about a girl pressed against her husband. This is what though, make your own opinion on a scene that end there.
The rest of the movie and my attitude toward the two wives did get better as the movie persued. Not that I'd be on the womens side.... HECK NO :) But they weren't so unbelievable in their actions after a typical bad fight.
Let me conclude that I could believe that this movie is more geared towards a women's side of the argument than a guys side. So if you are looking for a lot of fun, intelligent humor, or driving force to keep the movie running, I'd say look away. If you have been in that situation a number of times and can get amused by such a scenario, take out the popcorn, pop in the video and keep on smiling at each little comment from both parties. I rated this with 3 stars down the middle of my scale because it is really geared for a certain audience and an average audience I believe should neither hate it or love it.
Mike
