Editorial Review:

This vintage Italian production of Ulysses is best enjoyed as Homeric adventure for kids. While The Odyssey is handled with admirable fidelity, you may suppress a chuckle when Kirk Douglas, as the titular Greek hero, speaks English and Italian, dubbing himself in English! Looking like a Spartacus wannabe, Douglas brings appropriate gravity to his classically mythic exploits. Having sacked Troy, Ulysses and his stalwart crew set sail for Ithaca, only to be delayed for a decade by such epic distractions as a giant Cyclops (a memorable highlight), the madness-inducing Sirens, and the deceptive Circe, who turns men into swine. Meanwhile, Ulysses's loyal wife Penelope (Silvana Mangano) is being wooed by suitors (including Anthony Quinn, fresh from Fellini's La Strada), making Ulysses's homecoming an urgent necessity. Resembling a Ray Harryhausen fantasy without "dynamation," this ambitious film boasts impressive special effects (for its time), and the kind of lavish sets and costumes that were once an Italian specialty. --Jeff Shannon

While it suffered a nearly unanimous beating from critics, The Girl Next Door attracted more than a few loyal defenders during its brief box-office lifespan. It pales when compared to its teen-comedy role model (the 1983 classic Risky Business), but you've got to admit that any movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and 24's Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy The Animal, director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. There's honesty and even (dare we say it?) maturity to be found in this raging-hormone fantasy, even if it's partially buried in a convoluted plot that's appalling or appealing, depending on your tolerance for good-natured prurience. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Darker than I expected.......2007-06-15

When I picked up this movie, I was thinking it was going to a smutty comedy along the lines of American Pie / Risky Business / Porky's. It turned out to be a bit darker than I expected, with some not so funny parts and some downright grim realities coupled in with it.

Matt is a stereotypical "nice guy" who has an ordinary high school career, not very popular, not very exciting, and a bit on the dull side. One day, a beautiful girl moves in next door and he is smitten. Much to his surprise, he discovers Danielle is a 19 year old former adult film star. That is, she's every horny teenage boy's dream come true. She's running away from the life, and doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. But she's being stalked by ghosts from the past, her manager is looking to make his investment back and he'll stop at nothing to get her back into his movies. Soon he and his friends propose making their own movie to pay him off once and for all, and even offer some of the other popular boys to be in it. They get many offers, and suddenly things are looking up for Matt.

What a movie like this says about our culture cannot possibly be summed up in a review like this. There are so many layers to this. The porn industry, while it seems exciting and glamourous on the outside, is really a horrifying place where women are mislead, abused, and intimidated into preforming. Danielle wants nothing else but to escape, and she's being stalked by the monsters who have lured her in. Matt sees her on one hand as his ultimate object of desire, and ends up falling for her. (Fiction!) Matt seems to be a nice guy, but he seems to hold this porn star girlfriend closer to him for the fact that she's a former porn star and not just "the girl next door".

Perhaps the most telling of events is when they are going to film the porn movie in the library of their school. When they talk the popular boys into doing it, they jump at the chance thinking that it will enhance their status. And the one who seems the biggest and strongest of them all can't preform. Stuck in the situation, Matt at first volonteers to be the one, but he can't do it. He loves Danielle too much to degrade her again. So his friend volonteers (the biggest laugh of the movie, when he appears on camera with the fencing mask on). And I had the best thought of the entire movie when he did that. I just thought "Wow, what a good friend". Perhaps that was the most noble thing of them all.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-05-30

I first rented this so that I would just kill some time. I was expecting a silly movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had to buy it. The acting is excellent and the ages of the actors is very close to the ages of the characters. This is a teenage movie for adults. It has its crazy moments, but in the end it's a love story.

I'm glad that it didn't do well at the box office. If it did, a sequel would been made.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Flick for fans of John Hughes and 80's Growing Up movies!.......2007-05-24

So one night when the wife was away i decided to bring some easy on the eyes, hollywood pap, home with me from the video store where i worked. I picked the girl next door based purely on the picture on the cover. I didn't want something too involving. I had seen the trailer some time before and it seemed to be an 'American Pie' kind of movie....

Well, i was wrong. I sat in amazement the whole length of the movie, dumbfounded that it was so good. SO GOOD!. It takes alot of it's influence from another of my favorites, Risky Business. It's not a remake and it's not a sequel. it's more of an homage. It's far better than if it were a remake. It really is just a joy to watch. I told my wife about it when she got back, and she kind of rolled her eyes and said 'yeah, okay, lets watch it'. An hour and a half later of staring, jaw dropped, at the screen, she turned to me and said just one word: "GENIUS!"

Really, it's up there with Risky Business and Ferris Buellers Day Off. It's a movie about growing up that we can all relate to. This is the kind of movie that changes a persons perspective on life. Amazing cast. Amazing SoundTrack! All over, great film!

2 out of 5 stars The politically correct girl next door........2007-04-23

This movie never gets off the ground, due to "political correctness", i did see it's potential wasted in almost every scene.every scene had the chance to become outragesly funny but never takes off. theres almost no nudity, none by the female lead at all, all punchline and no joke with this movie. typical politically correct movie for these days.

4 out of 5 stars unexpected.......2007-03-10

You might think from the title and the commercials this movie is about a super sexy porn star slut...but it's actually the opposite. I really liked how the movie was done to portray the struggles some girls really have to go through in their carrers and mixed it with the toughness of high school.
This is definately a movie i would reccomend to people over like 16 but only if you want to watch a funny movie about the discovering and strength of two people...This movie is the real thing, i enjoyed it and i think many other people could too.

A gut-wrenching portrait of adolescence, Thirteen is made all the more powerful because it was co-written by a genuine teenage girl, Nikki Reed, who also co-stars in the movie. Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a serious good student, finds herself needing to express her anger and resentment at her fractured family life. To rebel, she pursues a friendship with the reckless, alluring Evie (Reed), who seems to have all the cocksure freedom that Tracy desires. What follows is both harrowing and compelling: Tracy becomes enmeshed in a relationship with Evie that empowers Tracy and drags her deeper into the misery she wants to escape--and terrifies her mother (Holly Hunter), who struggles desperately to hold on to her daughter's love. Thirteen makes every step on this path utterly convincing, due to the vivid script, energized direction, and astonishingly alive performances from Hunter, Reed, and especially Wood. Jolting, sad, and mesmerizing. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tragic, heartbreaking and strong, a film that dares to be heard and deserves to be applauded... .......2007-07-02

The first time I watched `thirteen' I was stunned at how brutally honest a film it was. It's so easy for Hollywood to sugar-coat reality to make it accessible but here that is far from the case. In it's honesty though it never crosses the line in becoming so overtly dramatic and edgy that it comes across forced and in other words Hollywoodized. `thirteen' stays true and relatable and effortlessly absorbing. While watching the film I found my heart invested in the story, in the characters and in their eventuality. I really cared for everyone involved in different ways and for different reasons. The cast, I should immediately point out, is so brilliant here that they really help keep this film true to form and each actress adds layers of honesty to her performance.

Evan Rachel Wood blew me away with her performance as Tracy Freeman. Tracy is your average thirteen year old girl. She's awkward around boys, teased at school, distant from the popular girls, estranged from her parents, longing to be accepted by her peers as well as her father. Her whole life seems a waste. Her mother Melanie is a recovering alcoholic who damages her family with her choice of male companions but who is genuinely trying to make things good again for her children. Tracy's father is never around to lend a hand in the matter and can't seem to find the time in his schedule to give his daughter the attention she needs. In order to vent her frustration and find some control Tracy resorts to smoking and cutting.

Tracy them meets Evie Zamora, the popular girl in school. She's overly sexual, malicious and dangerous and these qualities immediately draw Tracy in. She begins to conform to Evie's standards and a shift begins to take place in Tracy's attitude and her actions. Melanie, the maternal instinct kicking in, spots this change early on but is unable to take evasive action. Evie's family life is tragic as well. Her parents are no where to be seen and her cousin who acts as her guardian is so uninvolved and lenient with Evie that her behavior, as drastic and outlandish as it is, is welcomed, even encouraged. Melanie sees this and feels almost guilted into accepting this girl, a girl who gets no real love and attention elsewhere. While Tracy distances herself further from her mother, Evie uses this opportunity to attach herself, reaching out to that motherly concern, love and guidance she's lacked all her life.

The film spirals down to a breathtaking ending that resolves much and brings to the fore true intentions. It's beautifully scripted by director Catherine Hardwicke and co-star Nikki Reed, who plays Evie. Reed is tragic as Evie, really captures the essence of this girl lost in the shuffle and her breakdown in the end of this film is beautifully captured in all its raw reality. Her character finally emerges in truth and honesty before everyone's eyes and as her exposure is made clear the sheer brilliance of her performance is made manifest as well. Holly Hunter well deserved her Oscar nomination. Her portrayal of Melanie is sincere and heartbreaking. But no one here deserves more praise than Evan Rachel Wood who devours her role and delivers such tempered and controlled emotions, delivering believability and honesty in each brilliantly calculated move. Watching her character transform in each scene is effortless and captivating.

`thirteen' may be hard to stomach sometimes, especially if you're a parent, and even more so if you are a parent of a young daughter. As much as it may remain difficult I feel it's also very important that you force yourself through it. It exposes quite well the dangers surrounding young girls today, from the desires and pressures to conform to your peers and the enticing effects of drugs, alcohol and sex, vices that are becoming more and more accessible to kids of younger and younger ages. Directed with equal measures grit and concern, `thirteen' is a landmark film that sheds a much needed light on the dangers of adolescence and is one of the more moving and socially important films of the past decade. By far the greatest film of 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and True.......2007-04-13

I have an old friend that went through this exact same situation(s). This movie was amazing, true, and eye-opening. This is what happens in real life and it is all real...there is nothing fake about it. This is the best realistic movie about teenage girls that I have ever seen in my life! Nothing else compares to this. The cinematography is amazing; the movie is done very, very well. I can't say how much this movie hit home or otherwise - it is just great and it is truely my favorite movie ever!

10 out of 5 stars for Thirteen!

2 out of 5 stars Awful...........2007-03-09

I do not understand how anyone could rate this trite piece of garbage 5 stars. The story was predictable, and the script was boring and forced. The movie had some scenes with shock value, but I didn't watch it to see fourteen year old girls getting undressed, and forcing themselves upon people. I was hoping it would be along the lines of kids, but nowhere near the intensity of that movie. The characters in this movie are two dimensional, which makes the movie even more unbeleivable. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I expected a LOT better from the other reviews I read.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me my thirteen!.......2007-03-07

I loved it. Every bit of it. Great cast! It brings back memories and I understood it right away. There were so many things about the way the kids were that reminded me of being at that awkward age. What a great movie!

PLOT OUTLINE: A movie adaptation of Homer's second epic, which talks about Ulysses' efforts to return to his home after the end of ten years of war. REVIEW: I enjoyed it very much. I assume this was the earliest of the bunch of muscleman films that became increasingly popular with the release of the Hercules with Steve Reeves. It starts out a bit slow, but Ulysses' voyage is done wonderfully. The highlight of course is the cyclops that takes him and his men prisoner. The effects are well done, as is the cyclops make-up. Kirk Douglas makes a good Ulysses and Silvana Mangano is beautiful as his wife Penelope and seductive in the second role of the witch, Circe. If you enjoy these kinds of films, this is one of the good ones. 4 out of 5 stars Quite Entertaining!.......2007-01-16

According to Homer, Ulysses is king of Ithaca, and father, by his wife, Penelope, of Telemachus...

Homer portrays Ulysses as a man of outstanding wisdom, eloquence, resourcefulness, courage and endurance...

In the Iliad, Ulysses appears as the man best fitted to cope with crises in personal relations among the Greeks and his bravery and skill in fighting were demonstrated repeatedly...

Ulysses wanderings and the recovery of his house and kingdom are the central theme of our film, which also relates how he accomplishes the capture of Troy by means of the wooden horse...

The motion picture, fill in the gaps with flashbacks, describes Ulysses' wanderings between Troy and Ithaca... As a troubled man, Ulysses spends much time at the shore trying to remember his past...

He encounters Polyphemus, the Cyclops, son of Poseidon... He escapes from his cave by getting him drunk and running a ram into his eye...

Shipwrecked, his men gone, his memory lost, he is discovered by a beautiful young princess Nausicca (Rossana Podesta) who immediately falls in love with him... Ulysses defeats the champion wrestler of Phaeacia in a public exhibition, but remains distant trying to recall his past...

He then encounters the Sirens whose songs lure sailors to their death... Plugging the ears of his men with wax, he has himself tied to the mast with ropes so that he can hear their call...

Ulysses reaches the island of the enchantress Circe who casts her spell on him... Taking on the appearance of his wife Penelope, she held him captive and turned his crew into swine, but fails to keep him in her company...

After almost l0 years, Ulysses at last arrived in Ithaca, where his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, had been struggling to maintain their authority during his prolonged absence...

Kirk Douglas plays, with sensitivity, Ulysses, "the man of many turns" who had many opportunities of displaying his talent for ruses and deceptions; but at the same time, his courage and loyalty..

The full-figured Silvana Mangano plays a double role: Penelope, the faithful wife and Circe, the sorceress...

Anthony Quinn is the arrogant Antinous, the most persistent of Penelope's suitors, hanging around the palace with a group of vicious noblemen, trying to persuade the lovely queen that Ulysses is dead and that she should choose one of them as her next husband..

With the elements of an Italian epic adventure tale photographed in Technicolor, the film is quite entertaining in its attempts to translate episodes of Homer's Odyssey...

4 out of 5 stars Quality Campy Epic........2006-04-02

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this classic foreign film. Although the dialogue was dubbed in in English after filming; Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn's voices are used for their own parts, so you almost forget this fact while enjoying the action. Both men act up a storm and the woman who plays Penelope is sympathetic and sexy in her duel part as the witch Circe. The special effects are primitive but believable in a campy "Batman" style. The voice of the Cyclops is wonderful and his eye even moves in its socket! The cimamatic tension as Odysseus and his men stomp the grapes in the giant's cave is truly infectious. The color and picture quality of this Korean print is excellent and the sound is good. It's well worth the low price to relive the memories of this classic film which was often shown on television by local UHF stations back in the '70's.

    Description

Adapted from the brilliant novel by James Joyce, "Ulysses" portrays a stream-of-consciousness day in the life of Leopold Bloom, Molly Bloom, and Stephen Dedalus (the hero of Joyce's earlier autobiographical novel, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"). Bloom is an ordinary man, a Jew whose odyssey through the streets of turn-of-the-century Dublin leads him through trials that parallel his classic prototype, Ulysses, on his epic journey home. Molly is his voluptuous, delightfully earthy wife whose infidelity is a major burden Bloom must bear. The intimacy of Joyce's language was without precedent in literature, and its flashbacks, dream episodes, sounds and visual montages translate freely into the language of cinema.

4 out of 5 stars Not a substitute for the book but a great aid.......2007-06-10

I owned this film on video and then purchased the DVD when it became available. The DVD has not been enhanced and the picture quality is not great. However, I think it is still worth buying for the quality of the acting performances - Milo O'Shea IS Bloom - and the fact that it is filmed on location in Dublin - although some of the scenes are not placed in the original Joyce locations. It is of course a seriously curtailed version of the novel - it would have to be to fit into two hours - and does not in any way substitute for a reading of the original. Much of the symbolism and historical references of the inner dialogue cannot be transferred onto the screen but I think the film can be a great aid to anyone reading the novel for the first time.

The best scene in my opinion is the Cyclopes episode where Bloom confronts the citizen - it is an excellent representation of Joyce's narrative and a valid interpretation of his elaborate imagery.

5 out of 5 stars True to the book.......2007-05-08

    5 out of 5 stars Ulysses.......2007-03-20

This movie is based on James Joyce's book 'Ulysses. Originally I saw this movie when it first came out -- all those many years ago. Fell in love with it at the time, and one day while doing a web search for movies I discovered that it was available on dvd, so naturally I had to have a copy!!!

4 out of 5 stars A VALIANT ATTEMPT AT THE IMPOSSIBLE.......2006-08-15

yes, ok, so it becomes Milo O'Shea's show and no other fine actors were available in the budget and steals the show through overacting which fails to communicate Bloom's humility (especially at the end of the Circe episode) and humanity.

Yes, so steven is nothing but a pretty boy of the beatle's early era with no more acting ability than looking constipated, unable to carry the load.

Okay, so they cut out all the best parts and all of the best lines, including of Buck Mulligan, who conducts himself as well as can be, but loses good lines. ANd okay so the BRitish production cut out all the stabs at the SASSENACH oppressive race essential to Ulysses and any Irish literature.

    Still
It is the best that can be expected, a quick overview of an infinitely complex novel, and the best that will ever be achieved.

4 out of 5 stars Modernist Masterpiece made (somewhat) accesibility........2006-07-15

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. I saw it when it first came out and it was over my head. Generally the book is considered the most challenging English languague novels, but the movie was fun.

It did have that strange Modernist lack of linearity that is not
always easy to grasp. And in some ways it reminded me of the visual presentaion of "The Trial" by Orson Welles, although much more upbeat.

The Anti Semitism was so thick that you could cut it with a knife, but Bloom was an excellent character as was his wife Molly. And you could feel some people really loved the irascible character. Deadulus (the Joyce double) wasn't as fully developed, but was still effective.

The ability to visualize stream of cosciousness writing is
nearly impossible for an extended length of time, but it was a nice try. And the various omniscent narrions, while being a little too film noirish, were still effective; particularly
Leoplod's and Molly's which took up nearly half the film.

This is definitely not for everyone, but if you want to know the general points of this monumental work- and laugh a little-
Ulysses is definitely worth your time. Maybe next I'll try the book.

(ps some of the automobiles were much too modern for the time the film took place- nobody's perfect).

5 out of 5 stars The resplendent rays of the myth!.......2006-10-22

Kirk Douglas was simply outstanding in this legendary epic saga of Ulysses; King of Ithaca, husband of Penelope: The script is based in the most relevant and emotive sequences of Homer's Odyssey; with magnificent special effects, the encounter with the one' eye giant, the mermaid's songs, the spelling of Circe in what we will find out one of the most expressive, gratifying and ethic confrontations, when Circe proposes him to be God and he replies: there are still major gifts, like to be born, to die and in the middle of the interval: to be a man!

An excellent recreation of Ulysses searching for his return to Ithaca.

    3 out of 5 stars Kirk's conquest!.......2004-08-13

Yes--absolutely, I agree with other reviews that it is overdubed badly and that the ending reunion of Ulysses and Penelope is a "let's get out of here" finale. And yes, the young Rosanna Podesta is witless as the young princess who discovers the shipwrecked amnesiac wanderer.
However! This is a chance to see Kirk absolutely revel in his emotions, ranging the gamut from comedian (try amusing a man-eating Cyclops yourself, eh?) to a foaming-at-the-mouth grief-stricken sailor (tied to the mast as his ship passes the Island of the Sirens). Better yet, look at the rage in his heart when he confronts the suitors who have pillaged his home in his absence. Three cheers also for a very sexy Penelope--for whatever reasons it took, I would have faced all those monsters and tragedies to get back to her arms and bed too!
A final bonus for Anthony Quinn as the most bold and arrogant of the suitors--his acting was a needed support. Aww, go on and admit it--this film is fun for any middle school teacher who needs to put through the visuals of the Odyssey. Sure beats the lame excuse that Armande Asante did!

      Product Description

First published in 1922, Ulysses was the piece of work that made the name of its author, James Joyce. Its publication was seen to expand the domain of permissible subjects in fiction.

A remarkably ambitious novel, a labyrinthine work of great humor and technical accomplishment, it once was denounced as obscene, occasionally was accused of being unreadable and is now generally acclaimed as being the greatest book of the 20th Century.

Although he spent most of his adult life outside of Ireland, Joyce s fictional universe was firmly rooted in Dublin, providing him with both setting and subject matter.

In James Joyce's Dublin: The Ulysses Tour , Robert Nicholson, curator of the James Joyce Museum, Sandycove, conducts us through Joyce's world, with great enthusiasm and an irreverent sensibility that Joyce would surely have relished. Whilst allowing himself a couple of very Irish digs at the great man, he shares his admiration for the writer with us, together with his love of the novel and the city that gave birth to it, in a manner that is entirely captivating.

      Description

Ulysses S. Grant was an American paradox. A failed businessman, he became a brilliant military strategist whose destruction of a defiant South gained him the label "butcher." Elected president in 1868, Grant lacked the skill to deal with reconstruction and the nation's economy. His two terms were rocked by racial conflict and corruption scandals. Financially ruined, Grant spent his final days battling cancer to finish his war memoirs

5 out of 5 stars The Grant You Never Knew.......2004-09-06

After watching numerous DVDs about the Civil War, I became intrigued about Hiram Ulysses Grant. This DVD filled in a lot of gaps and I learned some interesting things about him. In 1821, the American Colonization Society was formed to return blacks to Africa (thus the colony of Liberia). Lincoln gave this concept consideration. What I learned in the DVD was that in his presidency, Grant pushed for the annexation of Hispaniola, not to relocate blacks (and get rid of them), but to give them the option to leave, thus impressing upon white southerners the importance of black people in their labor force and encouraging them to pay better wages and treat their employees better so that they wouldn't relocate to the Caribbean instead. He tried, unsuccessfully, twice to push this through. His efforts to ensure that black Americans were treated fairly (prosecuting KKK members in South Carolina) caused him a lot of grief and contributed to his failed presidency.

His name doesn't ever pop up in discussions of great presidents, and he doesn't seem to be appreciated as an American very much either, or not as much as I think he should.

Buy the video, see what you think.

      2 out of 5 stars Doesn't capture Grant's essence, but intriguing.......2003-12-25

Ulysses S. Grant was an extremely difficult man to get to know. He was shy, taciturn and not in the habit of revealing his feelings to many outsiders. It's always been difficult for historians and film makers to accurately portray the man and most often, they have failed in their interpretations. Though the American Experience PBS project is at the apex of historical biography, this one on Grant falls a bit wide of the mark.

Problems abound from the get go: the production is uneven, occasionally plodding and doesn't reveal much of Grant as a human being. Though they take pains to introduce his parents, siblings and give a thorough overview of his childhood, there is something intangible missing. Though he was retiring, Grant was still a vibrantly alive man. He had fierce appetites and had a desire to be somebody. None of this is really explored in the film and it results in massive frustration for the discerning viewer.

The interviews with historians are uneven. Unfortunately, the producers elected to have Geoffrey Perret air his opinions on Grant, none of which are historically valid or interesting. Brooks Simpson and John Simon fare much better, and their views are entertaining and reliable.

Much of the documentary focuses on Grant's Presidency, which is a curious facet of the film. The revisionist aspect of the show reveals USG to have been a much better President than he's given credit for, but the content again induces more questions than it answers.

Grant was a fascinating man with rare depths of emotion and feeling. He's worth getting to know, even though the journey is sometimes a complex experience. That description would sum up this futile attempt to shine a light on the psyche of this remarkable man. Though the film has definite merit, it simply doesn't begin to showcase what an incredible man Grant was. The definitive film of Grant has yet to be made.

4 out of 5 stars The most popular American of the 19th century.......2003-01-10

As I watched this PBS Home Video of "Ulysses S. Grant: Warrior President," I was very conscious of how this documentary compared with the celebrated Ken Burns documentary on "The Civil War." First, I was very much aware of the stylistic differences between the two, especially in terms of Michael Whalen's music, which tended to remind me of the background music I often hear on computer games. I make a point of watching "The Civil War" once a year, so I plead guilty to thinking that is the way any and all documentaries dealing with that topic should sound and look. Second, I came to the conclusion that the strongest part of this documentary was the second half, focusing on Grant "The President." Written, produced, and directed by Elizabeth Deane, the second videotape has the advantage of going well beyond the end of the Civil War and therefore constantly providing us "new" information. The first half, done by Adriana Bosch, bears the burden of covering most of the same ground Burns did tracking Grant's military career as "The Warrior."

Certainly I learned more about Grant's accomplishments as President than I had ever heard before, since the history textbooks tend to focus on the scandals that plagued his administration rather than his attempts to bridge the animosity between North and South that continued for years after the Civil War ended. Ultimately, I was struck by two central ideas behind this documentary. The first was that Grant was the most popular American figure of the 19th century. This is one of those ideas that seem obvious once you consider it; after all, Lincoln was not beloved until he was dead and buried. But I would have named Andrew Jackson as deserving that honor, forgetting for a moment how much he was hated in certain quarters. The second idea offered up confirms the first, and that is the argument that the death watch for Grant, as he was dying of throat cancer and struggling to finish writing his memoirs so his family would be taken care of after he was gone, was responsible for bridging the sectional differences between North and South.

This might be a romanticized assessment of the situation, but by the end of this documentary there is a desire for Grant's legacy to be more than the best selling memoirs of the 19th century. "Warrior President" justifies this conclusion by focusing throughout on how Grant was an honorable man, a reasonable man in unreasonable times as we are told several times, who tried to provide equality for African Americans. Grant always admitted to his errors, both on the battlefield and in the White House, and along with the way he handled Lee's surrender, would be the most compelling evidence of the man's personal honor. Furthermore, the documentary does not gloss over the man's many failings. However, there is a concerted effort to look at both his generalmanship on the battlefield and his memoirs as clear evidence of a superior mind.

Finally, I am struck by the idea that if it were not for Grant's memoirs we would have little basis for insights into what the man was ever thinking. "Ulysses S. Grant: Warrior President" offers a nice combination of biographical detail with critical insights from a variety of talking heads. Grant is one of those historical figures whose reputation will always be in a state of flux depending upon what emphasis you place on various aspects of his life. This documentary does not compel a particular conclusion, since the case it advances is be no means dogmatic, but it does offer up a series of perspectives for viewers to consider in reassessing the man.

4 out of 5 stars Frustrating PBS DVD "Ulysses S. Grant".......2002-11-06

The content of this DVD is to be praised. However, one is always forced to watch the full PBS introductions and all the credits and advertisements of both parts before one is able to manually choose to move through the sections. This is very frustrating and totally unlike any other DVD I have watched. In addition, the printed 15 to 34 numbering sequence shown for Part Two is, in fact, 1 to 20 in the DVD. There is great annoyance until one learns how this DVD may be played. Question: Is this standard for PBS?

5 out of 5 stars It will make you appreciate how great Grant was.......2002-09-12

I have always been ambivalent about Ulysses S. Grant, both as a General and as a President. His record as a General was one of success, but at the expense of an enormous amount of blood. His administration was rocked with scandals, so severe that had they happened in modern times, it is unlikely that he would have survived as President. Yet, his greatest failing was also his greatest strength. He was a man of utmost character and principle, and he found it difficult to understand that other people did not share those traits. Lacking this sense of cynicism towards others, it was impossible for him to anticipate the unsavory actions of his nonmilitary associates. This is all the more unusual, because he never had any difficulty discerning the deceptive practices of his battlefield opponents.
This tape has forced me to rethink my opinion of Grant the General. His record of successive victories is largely unmatched in American military history, and his conquest of Vicksburg was one of the most well-planned military operations in the history of the world. He also was a great strategic thinker, understanding that the fall of Vicksburg doomed the Confederacy. Until I viewed this tape, I had no appreciation for Grant as an original military thinker. After seeing the descriptions of how he carried out many of his campaigns, it is clear that he was a great military commander and the person most responsible for the Union victory.
My opinion of his presidency has also been rather low, but this tape has forced a serious upward revision. He faced enormous problems, the intransigent elements in the South refused to accept anything but apartheid, and if Grant made a mistake, it was in realizing that military defeat did not change the attitudes in the South. He just could not comprehend the deep hatred for blacks that was a fundamental part of the psyche of so many southern whites.
This tape also reminds us that the United States citizenry has experienced terrorism in the past. The white supremacist groups that arose after the Civil war terrorized blacks and white sympathizers for almost a century. People were brutally killed, homes burned and bombed so that black people were forced to accept a denial of their rights as citizens. Grant did all he could to help the freed slaves, but the country had no stomach for any additional federal action and most people just wanted the whole problem to go away. Ironically, the one solution that may have worked was for the U.S. to annex the Dominican Republic and turn it into a state that black people could migrate to. Grant proposed the plan to congress, but few were willing to accept a black run state on equal terms with all others.
This tape is one of the best in the biography series produced for PBS. Grant is truly an American hero, and like so many, was humble in his enormous success. If he had not been there to save the union, it is doubtful that Lincoln could have done it. I enjoyed this tape so much, I watched it twice just to see if I had missed anything the first time.
