Doris Day was nearing her popular zenith, and Jack Lemmon just hitting his stride, when they teamed up for It Happened to Jane, a small-town comedy in the Capra vein. Doris is a widowed mom whose Maine lobster business is snarled by railroad tycoon Ernie Kovacs (hiding behind a skullcap and a huge cigar), the "meanest man in America." Her lawsuit against him, aided by lawyer-suitor Lemmon, gains national headlines. This is a curious movie: crucial scenes seem to have been left unwritten, while sequences involving Cub Scouts and an oddly impassioned Town Hall Meeting go on endlessly. Director Richard Quine was making some fun movies around this time (Bell, Book, and Candle), but the fizz is only intermittent here, mostly provided by Lemmon's jack-in-the-box youthfulness. Doris sings a couple of tunes and brings her downhome tomboy routine to New York City, where the movie employs some of the quaint TV personalities of the day. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars Too long.......2007-01-09

This movie may have had potential but they blew it with the long drawn out plot. It is rather boring and seems to have just been made to put forth a political agenda rather than entertain.

Bent debuted onstage in 1979 with Ian McKellen starring in the London production and Richard Gere in its later Broadway version. The film version is adapted by the playwright, Martin Sherman, and closely follows his play's story of two gay concentration camp victims who are sent to Dachau and who fall in love, using their relationship as an emotional crutch in their efforts to rebuff the horror of the Holocaust. Max (Clive Owen), would rather wear a yellow star and proclaim himself a Jew than be lanced with the pink triangle that designates homosexuality. Horst, (Lothaire Bluteau) chastises him for his homophobia. Later the tables turn on Max, who finds--through Horst--the strength both to keep alive indefinitely and to ultimately embrace his sexual identity.

Initially set in a war-ravaged Berlin, Bent is directed by Sean Mathias, who first directed Jude Law in Indiscretions, and he has crafted a film that reminds one of Ian McKellen's Richard III with its spare, stylized, and stark world bombed into rubble and chic theatrical disarray. There are many poignant as well as harrowing scenes, and the result is a somber work that stands as a reminder that intolerance cannot overtake individualism and love. While Bent received an NC-17 rating for depicting Berlin's decadent, anything-goes-for-a-price nightlife, MGM opted not to edit out the tone-setting prelude and pushed to preserve the film's integrity despite a rating that is itself a kind of death for any film that bears it. --Paula Nechak

Description

Renowned British stage director Sean Mathias directs Martin Sherman's "powerful and provocative" (The New York Times) screenplay about one man's struggle to maintain his dignity while imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. Featuring exceptional performances by Lothaire Bluteau (Black Robe), Clive Owen (Gosford Park), Brian Webber, Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings: TheFellowship of the Ring) and Mick Jagger, Bent will "grab filmgoers by the heart" (Rex Reed)! Max (Owen) is a handsome young man who, after a fateful tryst with a German soldier, is forced to run for his life. Pursued and captured, Max is placed in a concentration camp where he pretends to be Jewishbecause in the eyes of the Nazis, gays are the lowest form of human being. But it takes a forbidden relationship with an openly gay prisoner to teach Max that without the love of another, life is not worth living.

5 out of 5 stars disturbing, not entertaining, but good.......2007-06-17

This is a very powerful film, I loved it, all the same it's not entertainment. This is one where the NC-17 rating is well deserved for the level of violence/inhumanity. It literally left me sick for several hours afterwards.

It is however an important story, and if you think you can stomach it, I recommend it. One day I'd like to watch it again, Clive Owen is amazing in this, and I've always been a fan, but it's intense.

4 out of 5 stars Bent/Cult.......2007-04-10

Interesting story for the discerning viewer, Early Clive Owen and special appearance of Mick Jagger in drag no less. Rather intense ending of cruelty to homosexuals by the Nazis.

5 out of 5 stars Crucified by the Gestapo.......2007-04-09

BENT has an all-star cast that stars British actor ("Derailed" star), Clive Owen as the movie's resident hero and lost soul, Max. Music legend, Mick Jagger has a small part playing a female impersonator who disappears after the first 15 minutes. Lothaire Bluteau plays sentimental Horst, and Brian Webber is poor, innocent Rudy.

Even though the movie is ten years old I never heard of it until last week. It's still an awesome movie because it tells such a powerful story. BENT tells the tragic tale of two homosexual men in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany during the 30's. When I first heard of this movie I thought that BENT was a weird title. But I think that after watching it anyone will agree that it's a very appropriate title.

The first 30 minutes of the movie are somewhat slow-moving. It shows Berlin before Nazi Germany took over. As you know, during this time in Berlin men danced with men and women danced with women and all were free to be happy and gay. At first sight, it's almost reminiscent of the classic film, "Grand Hotel." And I soon wished that there would be some dialogue and something interesting to watch because it seemed like the beginning was really dragging on.

Max was a foolish man to bring home another man that he met the night before, Wolf (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.) Sadly, when the Nazis break in, Wolf's demise is quick and brutal.

Max and Rudy try to get out of Germany because they are both homosexual men living in a country that wants them treated in the most inhumane ways possible. In the concentration camps homosexual men are the very, very lowest of the low. So, Max and Rudy have to sleep in the woods, or as Rudy calls it, the "jungle" while they race for a way out of Germany. As Rudy embraces Max to profess his love the Nazis come running towards them.

Both men are put on a train heading to a concentration camp. I don't want to give too much away but the train scenes are among the most vulgar and hardest to watch. I can't imagine that hell is any worse than what my gay brothers and sisters had to go through during the Holocaust. I think this movie was originally rated NC-17, and although I am very grateful that this story is being told I am also grateful that I only watched the cable TV version (which was still sad enough.)

Max has to tell the Gestapo that Rudy is not his friend (i. e. lover); for his own (temporary) safety. Clive Owen gave an especially momentous performance during the train scenes because it was obvious that he was trying to get Rudy out of his head (but could not.) Max first meets Horst on their "train trip to purgatory" and Horst tells him that he must not get close to anyone if he wants to survive in this place. Now I know why this picture is called BENT.

At the concentration camp, Max bribed one of the guards so he could work with Horst. Their mundane job is to move huge boulders back and forth, all day. The only purpose of this task is to make them emotionally and physically weak.

Even under such adverse conditions, Max and Horst fall in love. But they can never touch each other or even look at each other. They can never hold one another's hand or feel the other's breath. If one of the Nazis saw either man in even the most innocent intimate embrace or even having casual contact he would surely be dead.

So, instead both men talk to each other. They have a love affair in their minds. My favorite parts are when Max and Horst were working alone and able to talk to each other. At least in their minds they could love each other and not be afraid of the consequences.

Clive Owen's performance in this film was absolutely perfect. I am not an actor, but maybe it's easier for actors to act when they are surrounded with talent, and the rest of the cast was also flawless. Max totally reminded me of Ennis Del Mar. Both men had so much pent-up self-hate. However, Max's was much more fundamental, and twisted. It became evident that the abuse the Nazis inflected on Max's mind was just as brutal and barbaric as the physical corruption that they generously dished out. Clive Owen should've gotten an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Max. (I guess in 1997 it wasn't politically correct to give gay movies Oscars?)

Why is BENT so tragic and sad? Because it is true. The movie's realism will haunt you for days (or even weeks.) The characters are fictional, but be assured it did happen. This movie reminded of a very powerful book, "Behold A Pale Horse." This was a book based on true events which also describes a gay love story during the Holocaust.

Who do I recommend this movie to? Anyone. Not just gay men and lesbian women, but to all of humanity. Anyone that has any feeling will bleed for these poor men: Wolf, Rudy, Max, Horst; and the thousands and thousands of homosexuals that were tortured and murdered for no other reason than for being born gay.

5 out of 5 stars Very amazing!!.......2007-03-18

This movie is about a long long time ago that police arrested them for being gay, jewish, black and white being together, etc etc yadda yadda blah blah blah but whatever but this point was about the police picked 2 lovers up and arrest these 2 lovers for being gay but what really pissed me off was that the officer beat 1 out of 2 lovers up with the stick and threw out of the train and the other person was still in the train and happened met "someone else" but he thought the "love" word doesnt mean anything to him until in the end and realized he truly fall in love with this man in prison. He held this man in his arms and finally spoken said "I Love You" and decided to kill himself with the eletric fence. It's ALMOST the same part with QAF (Queer As Folk) when Brian the guy who played in QAF said he didnt believe in love but believes in f**king but then in the final season Brian finally realized that he was in love with Justin. I am so glad this year is not like the years years ago!!!

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING & SAD.......2007-03-14

It's a compelling story of 2 men in a consentration camp that are not able to share a love; but find a spiritual way of doing so.

MGM's status as the "class" studio was fully engaged when production chief Irving Thalberg took on this expensive, serious adaptation of Pearl Buck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. A smooth entertainment with a stiff portion of this-is-good-for-you seriousness, The Good Earth epitomizes Thalberg's idea of Art, which was also the prevailing idea of the period he dominated in Hollywood. The story follows Wang Lung (Paul Muni), a humble farmer, who makes an arranged marriage to a slave, O-Lan (Luise Rainer). The couple's great struggle is to procure--and then, against withering odds, keep--a piece of land, ownership of which makes the difference between self-determination and near-slavery. The film's physical production is truly eye-filling, with location shooting in China providing exterior shots and backdrops (and blending seamlessly with the footage shot in the U.S.). No wonder the great cinematographer Karl Freund won an Oscar for the photography, which includes an awesomely staged locust plague.

Also copping an Oscar was Luise Rainer for best actress--her second consecutive award, after The Great Ziegfeld. Rainer's underplayed portrait of self-effacing stoicism is a contrast to Muni's broader performance, although in some odd way he's exactly right for his role. Caucasian actors play the main characters (Walter Connolly is the family's bothersome, and tiresome, know-it-all uncle), with Asian actors--including Keye Luke--filling out the supporting parts. The blend of sobriety and hokum is vintage Thalberg, and this is the one MGM movie with an onscreen dedication to the young dynamo; he died during production, age 37. --Robert Horton

Description

First came marriage, an arranged union of peasant farmer Wang Lung (Paul Muni) and kitchen slave O-Lan (Luise Rainer). Then, through poverty and wealth, family and betrayal, war and pestilence, came love. From Pearl S. Buck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Good Earth combines Wang and O-Lan's story with a sweeping saga of China in upheaval. Muni and Rainer had both won 1936 Academy Awards?,* and Rainer repeated here with another Best Actress Oscar?.* The film also won for Best Cinematography - with camerawork most powerfully on display in the astonishing locust-plague sequence. Producer Irving Thalberg, known for combining literary prestige with commercial success, died during the production, and the film is dedicated to him.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Good Earth - A great film........2007-04-15

Such a rare film of this era that follows the book so closely. A few variations but understandable. Top acting and delightful to watch. A real golden oldie.

5 out of 5 stars History comes to life in this powerful film .......2007-03-30

I saw this film after I read "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck so I was cynical. The book was so rich that I couldn't imagine a film that could capture the depth of the written story. Not so. This film is a gem. It documents the life of one family during the revolutionary changes in China during the beginning of the 20th century. It looks at the struggles and triumphs with a personal, sensitive eye while following the general, sweeping changes in China with honesty and detailed objectivity.

It is a great film but before you see it, get the book. Reading this book was like going back in time. It was fascinating, enlightening and grand.

Get them both if you can.

4 out of 5 stars A Flawed Classic But Still A Classic.......2007-01-19

When I was in my early teens I first read the novel by Pearl S. Buck. At around the same time I discovered the movie on TV and was captivated. Just earlier this year I re-read the book and found it to be better than I had remembered. So I decided to watch the movie once again and see what I thought of that as well.

I think one of the most difficult things to keep in mind when viewing a classic from another era is to remember the limitations of that era. I'm sure 70 years from now the movies we consider "classics" will pale in comparison to what movie viewers consider a great movie. And it seems "The Good Earth" suffers from this as well, unfortunately.

One item that does come through the screen is the cinematography. Even though the film has been shot in black and white and is what is described as "postage stamp" (a square rather than wide screen), to get caught up in the landscape is easy. It is not difficult to imagine the squalor of the farmhouse that Wang Lung lives in and to compare that to the opulance of the fine house where O-lan has been a slave. When the Lung family is forced to move to the big city to survive, the viewer can truly feel the press of human bodies and the squalid living conditions. The filming of the locust attacking the farmer's fields is amazing. (A bit of trivia here: there actually was an attack during filming for the movie, so what is seen on the screen is truly real!)

So, what could possibly detract? Unfortunately, the actors themselves. At least for me. Casting Paul Muni and Luise Ranier into the leading roles just doesn't work for me. However, it did when I first saw this movie, so go figure! Both are capable actors, so it isn't that. But both are so overwhelmingly Western that there is no possible way they can pass for Asian. And Luise Ranier's German/Austrian accent is nowhere near anything that remotely sounds like anything from the Asian continent. Perhaps that is why she says very little in the movie? Even more distracting is the actor playing the role of the grandfather, whose voice is immediately recognizable as the grandfather in "The Grapes Of Wrath," and also as Uncle Henry in the "Wizard of Oz." What is distractingly funny is that all the children of the Lung household look very, very Asian. Now, I do understand that Paul Muni and Luise Ranier were established actors at the time. I do recognize that Irving Thalberg did want to cast all Chinese people into the roles, but there were not enough actors for the roles. And I do realize that, due to the Sino-Japanese War, China had stated refusal to allow filming if Japanese actors were used. (If they could do a world-wide search for Scarlett, why not find Asian actors?) But I feel it really does create a barrier in this movie that is otherwise well thought out and painstakingly presented.

What would be ideal is if this movie could somehow be re-made, sensitively, more in line with the book (the book is more about Wang Lung, whereas the movie centers on O-lan), and include a cast that is representative of Chinese people - or at least Asian.

Still, I do think this movie is a classic and has appeal. This movie also has a number of "firsts:" the first time an actress received back to back Oscars for Best Actress and the first (and only) time Irving Thalberg's name appeared onscreen in any movie (he died before this movie was completed). But this classic does have some flaws.

5 out of 5 stars A childhood memory!.......2006-11-27

I saw this movie many times on TV because this was my Mom's favorite movie. She came from a farming village outside of Canton. This movie was a reflection of her life. Her marriage to my father was arranged. She had to flee from the Japanese during WWII. This was one of the few movies that really depicted life in a Chinese village. A timeless classic and great addition to any DVD collection.

By the way she never complainted that the major actors were white.

3 out of 5 stars famine & locusts & drought, oh my !.......2006-09-06

this is really 3 movies in one. the first hour is a fascinating study of a relatively poor farm family caught up in turmoil; obviously this story resonated with an american public struggling through the horrors of the great depression. suddenly, the family becomes rich and we get to the unsatisfactory second branch of the movie: little more than a turgid family soap opera, saved only by the presence of the immortal tilly losch as the femme fatale. (purely an aside: if you want to read up on one of the more fascinating figures of the 20th century, go and google tilly losch). and then, we get to the finale, the scene everyone remembers: the invasion of the locusts. this is indeed an exciting sequence, as good a disaster film scene as hollywood ever produced. and when its over, we wind up the loose strings, movie over, tra-la-la. the film is hard to take today in watching the clearly western actors playing most of the chinese roles, but paul muni is his usual fine self and almost makes one forget the rubber bands around his eyes. as for luise rainer, this gained her her second undeserved oscar in a row, and all i can say is she had to have been one hot piece in the bedroom because she sucks as an actress. by the way, i should mention pearl s. buck; but does anybody know who she was these days?

4 out of 5 stars Hell's Angels History.......2007-01-18

Great DVD, factual but would need to be updated a bit.
They really did do a good job in capturing the true American Hell's Angels story.

3 out of 5 stars Why so homogenous?.......2006-12-27

This work was informative. I learned when and how the motorcycle group formed. I learned that their symbol has a patent. The cable channel that produced this work is notorious for cheesy reenactments of historical events. They don't use those here because there is plenty of footage of actual bikers. I sympathize with their leader's, Sonny Barger's, struggle with throat cancer. Still, I think his difficulty speaking may help current smokers consider quitting before it's too late.

The documentary does say the group never lives up to others' expectations, be it hippies, federal prosecutors, or others. Still, I am disappointed how the documentary doesn't explain why the group seems to be composed entirely of white males. They show women as the bikers' girlfriends, but not as members. Why is there no Hell's Angelettes or does the documentary just ignore them? The group started in California, one of the country's most diverse states, yet no member seemed to be Black, Latino, Native, or Asian. When I saw that the group had a Johannesburg chapter, I was especially concerned, because that chapter may have been apartheid era footage. The film "Biker Boyz" is almost all Black. Are bikers segregated by race and do the Hell's Angels promote that division? The work never says. It renders whiteness and maleness as universal in very problematic ways.

The work does say Hollywood is fascinated by the group. However, it doesn't mention that John Goodman played a biker on "The Simpsons" and that some Hell's Angels were in the Eurythmics' video "Thorn in My Side."

Steven Seagal plays a Chicago cop who takes on CIA types in this action thriller from Andrew Davis (The Fugitive). Davis brings muscle to the project, including some strong set pieces that make Seagal (who also co-wrote and co-produced the film) look awfully good. Costars Pam Grier and Sharon Stone give a big assist in that department, too, yet nothing can really mitigate such ridiculous moments as Seagal's getting profound with a villain in his raspy monotone: "You think you're above the law. But you're not." The DVD release includes full-screen and widescreen presentations, production notes, trailers, optional Spanish soundtrack and optional French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Seagal is a martial arts hero in serious trouble..........2006-12-17

Born in Palermo, Sicily and raised in Chicago, Nico Toscani (Steven Seagal) is a martial arts hero in serious trouble...

When his eyes are about to be opened, he is recruited into the CIA by a crazy drunk guy named Nelson Fox...

Toscani holds the record for having more relatives under federal indictment than any other cop in the city... He hates the cocaine lawyers and the bad weather, but he is a loving husband and a caring father with no sins to confess...

Nico is a narcotics cop who can't swallow his pride... He smashes crack dealers' faces into their cocaine mirrors, and wiretaps bad guys' phones without asking for permission... He assaults his opponents in bars and starts putting them in orbit... Nico wants to be number one on the most wanted list...

Toscani makes a big drug bust, and discovers some plans to kill a senator who can't be bought out... He stands against a psychopathic leader who have used his 'little beauties' many times to extract information...

'Above the Law' is the first Steven Seagal movie which reveals the chilling truth about a powerful institution always political, largely ineffective and frequently corrupt...

5 out of 5 stars no one is above seagal's law in this, his first movie.......2006-06-27

andrew davis(the fugitive, under siege) directs steven seagal's first movie with great gusto and keeps everything moving so fast that any plot holes are just steamrolled over and leaves us with seagal's best movie after under siege which was also made by davis.
seagal is an ex-c.i.a. agent now a chicago cop who stumbles onto a group of ex-c.i.a. men running drugs and killing anyone who gets in their way.
seagal isn't a great actor but he co-wrote the screenplay so it doesn't give him anything he can't handle, and the action is very well done. so if you lake action this is a good one to watch!! check it out!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Back when Seagal was really making movies.......2006-01-19

A chicago cop [Steven Seagal, In his film debut] fights to shut down a drug ring. This, Which is Steven Seagal's first film, Remains one of his very best efforts to date. The film has plenty of good action, A good plot, And it never gets boring and you never get tired of watching. Seagal is backed up by a good supporting cast which includes Pam Grier, Sharon Stone, and Henry Silva. Rent this movie and just kick back and enjoy the action... Have a blessed day, Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Seagal at his best.......2005-12-26

Steven Seagal could very well be the messiah of brutality and pain. If you like watching Seagal absolutely destroy random guys, and you enjoy his classy one-liners, Above the Law is an excellent choice. There is nothing wrong with this movie. Seagal is so ridiculously amazing - this debut may be his finest.

4 out of 5 stars Political Intrigue, CIA Ties, and Aikido Master on the Hunt.......2005-09-15

Steven Seagal's first movie, and many may still argue his best. I don't know why, but I got on a Seagal review kick tonight, and well, this movie started it all. I'm not much into sophist conspiracy theories (preachy plot), but the action is great and although light on Aikido action, it was the first time in a major motion picture that these skills were brilliantly portrayed. Andrew Davis handles silly dialogue well and keeps the pace going.

Strong performances abound from Pam Greir and Henry Silva. But Seagal is the star in his debut and for the next four years, riding on the coattails of this movie, he becomes a bankable star, only to blow it by gaining a lot of weight and making substandard movies (his directing disaster is "On Deadly Ground", a stupid movie that would later prove he shouldn't direct movies or write scripts).

4 out of 5 stars Nazis on trial.......2007-04-26

From 1963 to 1965, twenty-two men, all former members of Hitler's SS who had served as officials at the Auschwitz death camp during World War II, were rounded up and put on trial in Frankfurt, Germany, for so-called "crimes against humanity" - a euphemistic phrase that is all too feeble in describing the unspeakable atrocities these incarnations of evil perpetrated on their fellow human beings. The documentary "Verdict on Auschwitz," made for German television in 1993 but not released theatrically in the United States until early 2007, provides a gripping, soul-searing account of that trial.

The 175-minute movie is divided into three sections that run roughly an hour apiece and cover slightly different aspects of the trial. The first, entitled "The Investigation," focuses on the German government's efforts in the late 1950's and early 1960's at tracking down many of the key Nazi leaders who had either fled the country (many to South America) or were living prosperous and quiet lives under assumed names in the very same country where they had perpetrated their crimes. Part I also details the early stages of the trial which included taped testimonies from a number of the survivors (over 350 in total), as well as from "outsiders" who visited the camp on "official" business. Because cameras were not allowed in the courtroom after the first fifteen minutes of the trial, these audio tapes, in many cases, have become our sole connection with the participants in the drama. These voices, echoing down the corridors of time, provide a chilling first hand account of the atrocities. In addition to the recordings, the film includes interviews with a number of the participants in the trial, newsreel footage of the camp both before and after its liberation by Russian forces, and, perhaps most chillingly, shots of Auschwitz as it appears today (or more accurately, in 1993), its dilapidated, abandoned buildings serving as mute, ghostly witnesses to the most mind-numbing human tragedy of the 20th Century.

The second part, labeled simply "The Trial," chronicles in greater detail the testimony and documentation the prosecution used to bolster its case over the two-year course of the trial (the Nazis were nothing if not efficient in recording their actions for posterity). The third part - "The Verdict" - wraps up the case with the closing statements by both the prosecution and the defense as well as final statements by the men on trial. Even though the "verdict" seems preordained from the start, there's no denying that there is an intensely purgative effect for both the victims and the rest of us in seeing these human monsters exposed for what they are and finally brought to justice, even if the sentences do not seem exactly commensurate with the gravity of the crimes.

Like any work of art that attempts to come to grips with the horrors of that period, "Verdict on Auschwitz" can go only so far in providing answers for an event for which no satisfactory answers could ever truly be found. Why in this particular place? Why at that specific time? And how could such seemingly rational, "civilized" individuals - most mere businessmen with wives and children of their own - forsake all sense of common decency and humanity, and coldly and methodically participate in the wide scale torture and wholesale extermination of so many of their fellow human beings? We will surely never know the answers to these questions, but a movie like "Verdict on Auschwitz" serves as a painful but invaluable reminder that such things have happened in the past and they could very well happen in the future (as they clearly are in various parts of the world at this very moment). The lesson of "Verdict on Auschwitz" is that we ignore such reminders at our peril.

4 out of 5 stars A piece of history, stories that sadden ..........2007-04-23

Verdict on Auschwitz is a harrowing three-hour ordeal of history and personal recorded testimony, and a filmed record of the infamous Nazi excuse: I was just following orders. Rolf Bickel and Dietrich Wagner almost do too good a job, chronicling so many stories, so many details, and so much anguished testimony that the entirety is almost unbearable for a single viewing. This is a tale of men who committed monstrous crimes and a troubled German society that finds itself revisiting a dark past through the Frankfurt trials, lasting almost three years.

For people who've discovered Jackie Chan through his American hit Rush Hour and want to learn what his Hong Kong movies are like, Project A is an excellent place to start. Chan plays a sailor in 19th-century Hong Kong; pirates have been terrorizing the seas for months, and all efforts to combat them have been sabotaged by the corrupt chief of police and a criminal gang, who are in cahoots with the pirates. But the plot is hardly the point--a Jackie Chan movie is about astonishingly acrobatic action sequences and breathtaking stunts, and Project A has plenty. Of particular interest is a bicycle chase that is more suspenseful than any car chase you've ever seen. Chan is joined by Sammo Hung (star of TV's Martial Law) as a shifty con man who comes through when the chips are down. Project A also features Yuen Biao, a frequent costar in Chan's movies, who's yet another astounding martial artist. But what separates Jackie Chan movies from other kung fu flicks is his sense of humor; every fight scene is punctuated by something--a clever use of a prop or sudden reversal of your expectations--that will make you bark with laughter. Sometimes it's just so exquisitely choreographed that the entire movie seems to float on a cloud of giddy delight. Purists may object to the movie being dubbed, but given the overall hamminess of the acting, it's not particularly intrusive. Jackie Chan is often compared to the classic silent comedians for his grace and timing--he lives up to it. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great action, bad acting.......2007-04-02

I know not to expect great dialogue or Academy-worthy performances from Jackie's Hong Kong movies, and this one meets expectations. The story is not bad but the original acting is pretty bad, even before it was dubbed. That said, it still is a worthwhile view. The action scenes are top-notch, and Jackie's humor is evident throughout. Sammo Hung puts in a good performance and the chemistry between him and Jackie works. The final fight scene is very entertaining. If you like Jackie's Chinese movies, you'll appreciate this one. If you've only seen him in his American releases, you may be disappointed in the acting and production.

1 out of 5 stars Review of New Media/CineVu release.......2007-03-07

This is a review of the New Media/Cinevu release, not the dubbed Dimension one.

Do not buy this movie - this product should be pulled immediately as it seems to be an incomplete bootleg not even containing the whole movie. That should be sufficient warning there, but if you must know why, read on.

I was hesitant at first to buy this DVD, as all other reviews - both good and bad - seem to be of the Deimnsion version. I'm not sure why these two seperate products are linked to the same page for comments, but they are.

In short, this DVD is horrible. The only good thing is that it is in the original language - unfortunately, the subtitles - both Chinese and English - are hard coded into the screen, so you have to deal with both subtitles being up there. Secondly, the transfer is atrocious - so bad, in fact, that the hardcoded subtitles are so blurred its virtually impossible to read them (that's not even including the very small font used). The bad transfer also applies to the picture in general, giving it a low quality that makes the worst of TV show DVDs look like painted masterpieces.

There are no bonuses, sound options, or in fact any menus. The set up is bare minimum and the presentation so horrid that I feel as if I paid 15$ for a bootleg from Amazon, and I would not be surprised if in fact this IS a bootleg, as I can find no information on this New Media company or even this release of the DVD outside of Amazon.

But somehow, for some reason, I bore through this to continue on with the movie. Taking great effort I could make out the subtitles and grimey picture enough just to realize that the movie ends at 47 minutes - in an hour and a half movie. So not only is the transfer horrible, but it is incomplete, literally cutting off in the middle of the movie. This isn't a criticism about the editing, mind you, but the DVD actually just suddenly ends as if they didn't bother to burn the entire movie onto the DVD.

I will be emailing Amazon about this shortly, but I must urge all people to avoid this DVD, the reasons being clear - you aren't even getting the movie you paid for, its literally not all the way on the disc.

4 out of 5 stars DVD isn't a total loss, but it is still bad.......2006-10-03

So Dimension films was really at their peak of releasing some of the worst DVD's ever at this time. The problem with Dimension home videe is that they NEVER put an original language track on their DVD's. So the dubbing is bad enough but they put in some stupid freaking music replacing the original soundtrack. So obviously seek out an original verison of this because the only thing going for this DVD is the pictue quality. It is also nicely widscreened. Also listen for the Jack Hawkins sound alike.

So if you can get past all if the horrible voices and inferior music that Dimension has put in, get ready to see the greatest stunt movie ever. For it's time there is no doubt this was the greatest but even 23 years later this is possibly still the best.

Jackie plays an officer of the coastguard and has to deal with pirates in this movie. This is proabbly the best movie from the 3 brothers- Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, and Sammo Hung. The chemistry between the 3 is awesome and their great peking opera skills are in full display. The final fight is by far Dick Wei's finest hour and with the 3 brothers fighting him, this is just a dream match that you can see where the final fight in a movie like Eastern Condors came from.

Also watch for maybe the most dangerous stunt ever. Jackie falls off of a clock tower and drops at least 50 feet to the ground. If you watch it when they show the replay, it is actually a diffrerent take! Jackie wanted to make sure he had 2 shots of his fall so that he could have as many camera angles as possible and insisted on doing this death defying stunt twice!!! You can see in the movie that they actually show us both landings. Name me another actor that is willing to die for his audience. How can you not love Jackie?

4 out of 5 stars great!!!.......2005-09-22

another good movie by jackie chan.. great stunts and fighting..
look for the scene where jackie falls off a clock tower!! damn the man is crazy.. the movie may be outdated..but this is one jackie chan was at his best..he could literally almost do anything..i mean the man throws himself everywhere in this movie!

also look out for project A 2 and police story 1 and 2..

4 out of 5 stars one of his best..but not the best.......2005-08-08

I guess this movie is really dated..and looks really old,,but still the action in this is amazing,,from the gangsters joint..to the bycycle chase..and all the way to the pirates hide out..u should check out the last scene..where JC fights the main villain in the Pirate hide out...dang!! i gotta tell u..thats one of the best fights ever captured on film..jus amazing..the fights seems swift, flawless..really fast paced...another scene that was great was the gangsters crib..that was amazing too..Jackie literally throws himself in this scene..well enuff wit tha braggn jus chek it out urself..and ifu can buy the Hong Kong version..its less cheesy and it has more scenes..anyway great buy as long as u keep this movie under $10 ur alright...its not as good as other JC films like the best.. The most melodramatic Hollywood screenwriter could not concoct a tale as full of dramatic reversals, conflicted characters, and astounding coincidences as the story of Edith Hahn, an Austrian Jew who eluded Nazi oppression by going underground as an Aryan woman in the heart of Germany. When a Nazi factory manager named Vetter proposes to her after they've only known each other a few weeks, she confesses her true identity--and he marries her anyway. Her "U-boat" existence becomes an even more complicated masquerade when Vetter is drafted into the Nazi army and becomes an officer. The Nazi Officer's Wife lays out the story with clarity and compassion, with all its contradictions and glimpses of human goodness, in the face of monstrous evil, intact. The details of Hahn's life are simply amazing. Interviews with Hahn, her daughter, and other survivors give full dimension to the events. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What some people do to survive can seem unbelievable.......2007-02-14

Edith Hahn's true story is on par with a great companion film EUROPA EUROPA.Both films explore the strange circumstances that some Jews of the 1940's Holocaust found themselves facing in order to survive such madness.Like EUROPA EUROPA,THE NAZI OFFICER'S WIFE is a film that chronicles the almost happenstance life of one Jewish woman facing danger and strange, almost "Unseen" occurances at every turn. This is a thrilling film.Edith Hahn's story also highlights the ways in which many people worked WITHIN The Nazi Party in order to save countless lives. This is a point that i
s often overlooked in many Holocaust films.

The 2007 Dutch thriller BLACK BOOK bares amazing similarities to the Edith Hahn story, and may well be based upon her exploits.

3 out of 5 stars Compelling Holocaust Film.......2006-04-12

If you're expecting a movie which portrays the life of Edith Hahn, you're going to be disappointed. However, if you're expecting a documentary style film, you'll be happy with the results. Edith Hahn Beer's story is of the amazing true metamorphosis of a Jewish schoolgirl into an Aryan bride in a story unlike anyone else's. She got a job at the Red Cross and lived in a boarding house outside Munich. There she met Werner Vetter, a Nazi party member who fell in love with her. And despite her protests and even her eventual confession that she was Jewish, he married her and kept her identity secret. The two of them - the Nazi and his Jewish wife - lived out the war together, even bearing a child. Angela Vetter, their daughter is the only Jewish girl known to be born in a Nazi hospital. Throughout her ordeal, Edith saved every document and piece of paper issued to her, such as her Nazi identification, marriage certificate, and her daughter's birth certificate which listed both parents as "German-blooded." The film explores issues of faith, family and identity in this complex portrait of a woman who had to bury her true self in order to survive.

5 out of 5 stars "hiding in plain sight".......2003-06-30

An excellent documentary, with fascinating and at times devastating film footage, this is the story of Edith Hahn, a courageous woman who was also blessed with a degree of good fortune, meeting people who helped her, even among those in the Nazi Party. She took the identity of another brave young woman, Cristl Denner, who went to the authorities claiming to have lost her identification papers, enabling Edith to take the original "lost" papers, and move to Germany with them...and thus starts this incredible story of survival among the enemy. In 1985, Ms. Denner was honored at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, for her bold and humane act.

Produced and directed by Liz Garbus, written by Jack Youngelson, and with a lovely score of original music by Sheldon Mirowitz, it alternates between interviews with Edith (who is currently living in Israel, in her late eighties and looking as beautiful as she was in her youth), the story itself, which is narrated by Susan Sarandon, and portions of Edith's wonderfully written journals, read with much feeling by Julia Ormond. Ms. Ormond's considerable talent has been scarcely seen lately, and it is nice to hear her lovely voice used so well in this film.

This is a powerful account of a very unique life, with rare film clips, and still photographs of images that will stay with you; the one I will never forget is of the early days of the Nazi takeover of Austria, when the Jews were made to kneel in the streets and scrub the pavements, while bystanders watched. Edith has come through the horrors of her life with amazing fortitude, saying that "human nature is not fixed" and that she has "seen good everywhere".

Director Werner Herzog is famous for the deranged physical feats he captures in his movies, but Where the Green Ants Dream tackles an even greater challenge: The gap between the Western mind and Australian aboriginal cosmology. In the Australian outback, a geologist for a mining company (Bruce Spence, The Road Warrior, Aquamarine) finds his work obstructed by aborigines who tell him that his explosive tests will disrupt the dreaming of the green ants and wreak havoc on humanity. The mining company tries to mollify the aborigines, but they implacably resist. The confrontation escalates to a lawsuit argued before the Australian supreme court (which is based on the first legal battle over aboriginal land rights). This may sound dry--and much of the film is bathed in gusts of red Australian dust--but throughout the film, the geologist struggles to communicate with the aborigines and grasp the fundamentally different perception of the world. His glimpse (and ours) of this other worldview turns Western civilization on its side and leads the geologist to question his whole life. Herzog (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Grizzly Man) isn't subtle, but that doesn't diminish the often hypnotic power of his images, from footage of tornados to the faces of the aborigines, gentle as water yet as firm as stones. This is a worthy addition to Herzog's difficult, thrilling, maddening, and ultimately rewarding body of work. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Hailed as a Masterpiece of Modern Cinema.

In the wilds of Australia, aboriginal tribes observe their ancient legends and laws evolved over 40,000 years. Their culture is threatened by a giant corporation that wants to mine in one of their aborigines' holiest sites - the place 'where the green ants dream'. As long as those dreams remain uninterrupted, the aboriginal culture will survive but if the mining company executives succeed with their plan to destroy the holy ground, the aborigines believe that their civilization - and the earth will perish. Thus starts a revolt by the world of dreams against an impatient civilization that seems to want everything but understands nothing.

5 out of 5 stars FATA MORGANA!.......2006-09-17

Werner Herzog is the perfect and unique embodiment of the always worried, irreverent, unsatisfied and non conformist director that enjoys to walk on the razor edge and delights to expose limit situations at the eve of reach the boiling point.

That's why his entire cinematography has been signed for newness and original proposals, featured by unexplored territories and unthinkable stages.

In this case, we assist to the clash of two civilizations, visibly differenced , the ancestral aborigines and the western way of life, where the myth and the progress will collide like the unavoidable crash of two trains displacing each one, in opposite senses.

A company will settle in the middle of the Australian desert, in order to explore and exploit uranium reserves. But they will be faced for ancestral tribes who oppose them due they will interrupt the dream of the green ants.

A movie dedicated to Herzog' s mother, with intriguing and sharp reflections all the way through, when this case be discussed in the Supreme Court, through a very interesting trial, where the happy ending will be absent.

The final sequence will invite you to think and reflect.

4 out of 5 stars This movie become more topical as time passes.......2006-07-18

Modern civilization and primitive tribal groups do not have the same worldview - and it is this discrepancy that is examined in
Werner Herzog's excellent Australian film. A mining company has located a terrific reserve of valuable uranium in the desert of the outback...but the only problem is that the Aboriginal elders are guarding this land as one of their holiest sites..for here the green ants dream.

These green ants - actually green termites, have a special sense
that orients them to the earth's magnetism so they are wonderful
predictors of weather. If their homes are dug up, then the
Aborigines' universe, their sense of time and place, will be
uprooted. So the people attached to the land argue in court
their right to this ancestral holy spot.

Some of the village elders are depicted by wonderfully wise
Bushmen. That alone makes this a fabulous film. The director treats his themss with dignity and quiet power. See it.

3 out of 5 stars Bureaucracy Down Under.......2006-05-20

This is one of Werner Herzog's more obscure feature films, simply because there wasn't stories of hardship and suffering surrounding it. It's relative disappearance into the mists of time and Herzog's general reluctance to discuss it, suggest that only those films with mythical production stories are worthy of attention. This is a shame because there is some wonderful imagery of the Australian outback to be seen in this film. The narrative is typical Herzog has he continues the theme of the exploration of dreams and myths that has been his major career concern. As usual he takes a marginal group (in this case Aborigines) and charts their efforts to stake a claim to the land. Herzog depicts a harsh and unforgiving modern world dominated by bureaucracy and red tape, a world which rejects dreams and the imagination in favour of laws and statutes. The dichotomy between the modern world and the aboriginal world is highlighted amusingly, by a lift's inability to function and one aborigine bemusedly struggling with a digital watch. However on this occasion Herzog's dedication to accuracy and his casting of non professionals, aids authenticity but also frustration at fluffed lines and at times indecipherable dialogue. The DVD is far from impressive, the commentary track is in German and I was unable to get subtitles for it on my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Herzog's Mad Max.......2006-05-03

I have never seen a Herzog film I haven't liked, just some more than others. This is an in-betweener, but excellent, as always. Similar in stark landscapes to "Fata Morgana", "Where the Green Ants Dream" offers barren vistas, mounds of dirt, holes in the ground, and apocalyptic hovels. The character of the anthropologist sums up the film best when he describes modern Western technology and what it has done to the biosphere as a man on a train who knows the tracks ahead are out and all he can do is run to the rear of the train. Definitely one of Herzog's more accessible stories, and perfect for viewing in an anthropology course. The ending reminds me of classic J.G. Ballard, in which the dynamic character chooses desolation over re-integration into the hellish culture from which he came. And, yeah, there's a bit of "Mad Max" in the apocalyptic theme as well.
