At its core, Stomp the Yard is a romantic drama disguised as a dance film. Or is it the other way around? DJ (Columbus Short) is a troubled teen from Los Angeles who gets a chance for a better life when he is admitted into Atlanta's privileged Truth University. Just when he thought he had escaped a life of gangs, DJ finds himself in the middle of a "war" between two upper-crust fraternities where stepping (a popular dance form) is their weapon of choice. When DJ realizes the coed he falls for is the girlfriend of the school's champion stepper, he joins the rival fraternity to try to show her--and himself--that he's as good as anyone else there. Stomp the Yard is not an original film. Add some drums and you've got Drumline. Change some of the characters around and you've got Save the Last Dance. What sets the movie apart is the stepping. The precision involved at this level is impressively complicated and Short--a dancer and choreographer--is beautifully expressive both as an actor and a dancer. Sure the plot is predictable and hokey at times. But Short and Meagan Good (as his crush April) have wonderful chemistry together, and the supporting cast--including Harry J. Lennix as DJ's no-nonsense uncle--are delightful to watch. --Jae-Ha Kim

Say what you want about the storyline, the acting, whatever... you know you cheered for the under dog. To manage making a black movie with no sex, moderate violence, promoting higher education, unity and brotherhood, come on, you got to love it, especially in these days and times.

2 out of 5 stars unimpressive dance film.......2007-06-21

"Stomp the Yard" is a film that exists solely for its dancing. All else is mere filler. That includes the plot, which revolves around a young L.A. street dancer named D.J. (Columbus Short) who enrolls in Atlanta's Truth University and immediately finds himself caught up in the rivalry between two fraternities specializing in what is called competitive "stomp" dancing. The film also chronicles the lovelorn lad's near-stalker-like efforts to woo April (Meagan Good), the provost's beautiful daughter, despite the fact that she is already going out with a self-centered, super creep of a boyfriend (Darrin Dewitt Henson), who also happens to be one of the leaders of a rival fraternity.

Although the plot complications are relatively straightforward and easy to follow, you just might want to keep a "street slang-to-English" dictionary handy to help you through some of the dialogue. Unfortunately, the predictability of the storyline and the triteness of the romantic entanglements pretty much vitiate the attractive novelty of the context and setting.

That pretty much leaves just the dancing, which isn't all that terrific, actually, thanks to the frenetic, hurdy-gurdy quality of the editing, which breaks up the movements and prevents the dancers from establishing a smooth-flowing rhythm and style. We see their dance routines only in fragmented bits and pieces, a technique that does little justice to the vision and hard work of the performers, who clearly possess an impressive store of untapped energy and talent. At least that's more than can be said for the acting, which ranges in quality from the merely passable to the distressingly amateurish.

There are moments of inspirational racial pride sprinkled in among the melodrama and dance sequences, but they are quickly swept away by the contrivances and cliches that ultimately inundate the film.

Stomp on over to the refund counter.

When three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it's supposedly to save Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claim for academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return to the reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilson along with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of all ages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hanging on a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and just enough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-system ending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequently funny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by Snoop Dog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars A Homage That Doesn't Really Work--2 1/2 Stars.......2007-02-26

OLD SCHOOL is a comedy that stars Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell. Wilson portrays Mitch Martin, a real estate lawyer who arrives home early from a business training seminar to find his wife about to participate in an orgy. This break off their relationship and Mitch finds himself alone again and moving into a house on the campus of the local university. Meanwhile Frank Richard (Will Ferrell), one of Mitch's best friends, is getting married. The other part of the trio, Bernard "Beanie" Campbell (Vince Vaughn) tries convincing Frank not to get married right up until Frank's bride arrives at the altar. Beanie has a successful business and is married to a very attractive women and has a couple of kids, but he's feeling trapped. The Dean of the University, Dean Gordon Pritchard (Jeremy Piven) threatens to seize Mitch's house, but Beanie discovers a loophole in the seizure clause and Beanie, Frank, and Mitch turn the house into a new fraternity that is open to men of all ages in the community, including those who have no association with the university whatsoever. A battle between the new fraternity and the dean ensues, while in the meantime the three founding fathers of the fraternity face relationship struggles of their own with the women they love.

OLD SCHOOL includes allusions to many movies, but seems to have been most heavily influenced by ANIMAL HOUSE and FIGHT CLUB and seems to be a homage to both of those films. The ANIMAL HOUSE allusions are obvious, e.g. popular fraternity that the dean tries to close down. The FIGHT CLUB references aren't quite as obvious, but they are there and there are many. For example, the wrestling matches take place in the basement, club propaganda is photocopied at work, the men appear disheveled at work, in many of the fraternity scenes Vince Vaughn dresses in outfits similar to those of Tyler Durden, etc. In fact director Todd Phillips has said that he thought of OLD SCHOOL as being a comedy version of FIGHT CLUB.

With such a talented cast and a witty script full of film references, one would think that OLD SCHOOL would be a memorable and hilarious movie. Unfortunately, it's not. There were some parts of OLD SCHOOL that I found incredibly funny. For instance, watching Will Ferrell streak through a party and run naked down a public street was hilarious. In fact, Ferrell is the funniest thing about the movie. Just about every time he is on screen I found myself laughing at the antics of his character. I also enjoyed Luke Wilson's performance. Wilson portrays Mitch as a very likeable, down-to-earth, and realistic person. However, Ferrell and Wilson are about the only two characters who work well in the movie. Vince Vaughn can speak almost as fast as an auctioneer, but his character just doesn't fit with the rest of the characters in the film. Jeremy Piven is a very talented actor, but in OLD SCHOOL I don't believe that his character used to be the guy that Mitch, Beanie, and Frank used to beat up and neither do I believe that was able to rise through the ranks of academia to become the university dean. Most of the women in the movie are only background characters that are used as fodder for comic material. There are a variety of scenes in the movie that seem funny at first, but are juvenile at best and then quickly become boring and dull. There are many sexual references in the movie that have very little to do with the plot and seem basically to have been thrown in simply to have thirteen-year-old males buy movie tickets or the DVD. The movie had a lot of potential, but it doesn't come together in a coherent manner.

However, with the movie on DVD, one can get a better understanding of what the movie could have been. Some of the extras on the DVD include the usual director's commentary, a spoof of "Inside the Actor's Studio", deleted and extended scenes, bloopers and outtakes, and a making of featurette. Most of the deleted and extended scenes that are included on the DVD probably should have been kept in the movie because they add a great deal to the characterization and plot development. For instance, there is a scene where a college girl wants to sleep with Beanie, but he refuses. The scene in the movie makes Beanie seem like a complete jerk while the extended scene allows the audience to relate to Beanie and actually seem him as a human being. I really enjoyed watching most of these scenes and they allowed me to appreciate the movie a bit more. The other special feature that I really liked was the "Inside the Actor's Studio spoof". I found it hilarious; seeing Will Ferrell have a conversation with himself as two different characters is hilarious.

Overall, OLD SCHOOL is a movie that will probably appeal most to teenage males and some college students as well as fans of Ferrell, Wilson, or Vaughn. Other than that, I'd skip this comedy and watch ANIMAL HOUSE instead.

5 out of 5 stars Whilin out.......2007-02-21

It's a great want to get drunk and hang out with the guys (and I'm a girl)kind of movie. It will just make you laugh and laugh and laugh. And possibly want to relive glory days of college, or just act stupid. It's a toss up really. Great hanging out movie.

1 out of 5 stars Lowered Expectations.......2007-01-07

What, are you people high?

Have any of you even SEEN "Animal House"? How dare anyone compare "Old School" to that great movie. Are expectations so low for modern movies that something with a few funny scenes gets five stars? And if you do give it five stars, what rating do you have for "Animal House", "CaddyShack", "A Fish Called Wanda", "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"..... really great comedies?

We know Will Ferrel can be funny (Saturday Night Live), we know Ben Stiller can be in a good comedy (There's Something About Mary) and I still believe Vince Vaughn will eventually be in a good movie....but how many Ben Stiller/Luke Wilson/Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn CRAPTACULARS do we have to sit through before they make a truly funny movie?

Don't worry, I already know I am on the outside looking in on this one. I just don't understand it.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Grace .......2006-12-10

This is one of those corny, but charming, horror movies from the 1980s. It falls into the same category as Fright Night. But there is one element in this movie that sets it apart and makes it truly worth watching: Grace Jones. She gives a totally erotic performance as a female modern-day vampire. Gedde Watanaber also gave a very funny performance as a rich Asian-American college student named Duncan. Chris Makepeace and Robert Rusler were the stars, however, Gedde Watanabe and Grace Jones basically stole every scene that they were on. It's worth your time to watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Pure 80's! You have to adore it!.......2006-11-15

I loved this movie when I saw it as a youngster and hadn't seen it since so I jumped at the chance to own it on dvd. And thanks to those nice people at Anchor Bay we can enjoy it in a beautiful crisp 1:1.85 transfer. Such a pity it didn't get the 5.1 or DTS remaster but even so, it's still a treat. Only films from this era could get away with being so camp. All the characters are likeable especially Duncan played by Gedde Wantanebe. You may be interested to know that director Richard Wenk is the co-writer of the recent movie 16 Blocks.
The extras are awesome including casting sessions and the directors first film. If you love 80's horror, and let's be honest those were the best years for horror, you MUST buy this.

1 out of 5 stars the worst vampire movie ever!!!!!.......2006-06-13

i read all these great reviews for vamp so i thought "hay, give it a try. man am i unhappy, how anyone could rate this stinker a 5 is beyond me,and who said grace jones can act or that she's sexy?????? this is just the worst!!!!!!!!!!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Cut above the rest...........2005-12-10

VAMP has much more going for it than most of the 1980's wave of slashy trashy horror films.

This film is imaginative and quirky. First of all it stars Billy Drago as an albino thug. Secondly, it stars Grace Jones who was probably born to play the mute but imposing vampiric dancer.

The film is surprsingly stylish with stylish green and pinkish hues adding to a strange landscape. This film reminds me of Martin Scorcese's AFTER HOURS. Like AFTER HOURS this has a surreal world just around the corner from normality where oddballs lie in wait and strange events lead into other strange events.

The film is not without its faults. The acting can be suspect, though not bad enough to spoil the film, and it can be quite cheesey at times. But, then again, I think this adds to its charm. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars "JONES" FOR BLOOD.......2005-10-26

CAMPY 80'S VAMP FLICK.. LOVED IT THEN, LOVE IT NOW! TWO COLLEGE GUYS PROMISE TO SUPPLY SOME HOOKERS FOR A FRATERNITY PARTY. THEY DON'T HAVE A CAR SO THEY BEFRIEND A RICH GEEK THAT DOES & DRIVE INTO THE CITY. NIGHT FALLS & THEY GO TO STRIP CLUB TO RECRUIT SOME GIRLS. ONE GUY GOES IN THE BACKROOM FOR A "MEETING" WITH A POSSIBLE GIRL, BUT DOESN'T QUITE RETURN THE SAME MAN HE WAS.. I DON'T WANNA BLOW ANYMORE FOR YOU, SO I'LL STOP THERE..

GRACE JONES AS A VAMPIRE, YOU GOTTA SEE.. HER SEDUCTIVE NAKED DANCE SCENE WITH THE KEITH HERING PAINT JOB ON HER FLESH IS WELL WORTH A WATCH ALONE.. BUT STILL, NOTHING IN THE FILM TOPS THIS SCENE : THE DYING, ALMOST DUST, SKELETAL CORPS THAT UPON IT LAST BREATH, EXTENDS A MIDDLE FINGER TO IT'S KILLER BEFORE IT DIES! THIS FILM IS DEFIANTLY A COMEDY HORROR FLICK YET IT DOES HAVE SOME CREEP FACTOR TO IT.. NOT MUCH, BUT IT STILL EXISTS..

Needless and unnecessary are two words that have little meaning in Hollywood, especially when you're talking sequels or remakes. Case in point: Black Christmas, the revisionist version of the 1974 horror thriller largely thought to be the proto-slasher movie (this was four years before the first Halloween installment). The original, from director Bob Clark, is still considered a masterpiece of tension, understatement, innovative camera perspective, economic efficiency (a polite way of saying "ultra-low budget"), and killing off pretty young girls in grisly ways without any cumbersome exposition regarding the psychopath's motives. This, by the way, from the same Bob Clark who would soon bring us the beloved Porky's franchise as well as Black Christmas's polar opposite, the sweetly nostalgic classic A Christmas Story. Anyway, as needless and unnecessary as this remake is, it certainly delivers the goods on 21st-century slasher conventions as the sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa are picked off during Christmas break in ever more gruesome fashion. There's nothing wrong with all of this, particularly for fans of impalements, crushed skulls, ripped-out eyeballs, and some good old-fashioned Christmas cookie cannibalism. Writer-director Glen Morgan, who earned his own credibility as co-creator of the Final Destination series and the interesting 2003 remake of Willard adds a few clever visual homages to the original along with the amped-up extreme gore. Clark's device (was he the first to use it?) of creepy, mouth-breathing phone calls from killer to victim remains intact and creepy. He also resurrects Andrea Martin, one of the then-unknown actor victims who, now famous, plays the prim housemother. Another addition, which may not be so welcome to purists of the genre, is a load of exposition and backstory for the killer. Disturbing as these flashback set pieces are, they're also somewhat distracting to the foreboding tone. But you get what you pay for, and lots of people are going to pay dearly to dream of the shocking frights another Black Christmas will bring. --Ted Fry

Description

(Horror) A remake of the 1974 horror classic that inspired slasher films like Halloween; A group of sorority sisters are terrorized and murdered, one-by-one, during Christmas Break.

this movie was pretty disturbing, it was a very good movie. it was pretty disgusting, espicaily when billy made cookie cut outs of his moms flesh, nasty. well if you like these sort of films then check it out.

1 out of 5 stars Dear God why?.......2007-06-07

I won't say the original was a classic but this, geeze, is the equivalent of a cinematic abortion. It never truly develops, is never given the chance too, and is so stunted in every way (dialogue, acting, directing, storyline) that I feel justified in being pro choice. One can only imagine how much worse this could have gotten if it had actually run a full two hours.

4 out of 5 stars Jingle bells, your fear smells...like Christmas spirit.......2007-06-05

As a lover of horror movies, classy and cheesy, spooky and blood soaked, hair rinsing scary and the subtle terror subplots all intrigue me and this movie had a little bit of each yet all the parts didn't come together as smoothly as I wished.

Few girls are staying at their snow covered sorority house during the Christmas Season only to discover that they are being harassed on the phone by a maniac. As they slowly start disappearing and their numbers dwindle they finally sense that something weird is going on. When blood appears they realize that the house they have lived in hasn't always been a sorority house but a home to a madman, locked away in prison for horrendous crimes that seems to have broken out....

One by one they meet some gristly death, and that's what was actually gory, the death scenes were gruesome, focusing on a certain body part, the eye ball. Much more I dare not say but I enjoyed the creepy beginning as something evil stirs in the darkness and quietly starts to take the house apart from the inside out. The characters were pretty much one dimensional, not likable much and there for great prey for the killer as I can easily say that the not so bright sorority stars who were more likely to be makeup artists than serious scholars almost deserved their fates, that is if they made it all through the night.

The bad parts were the bizarre details, the freaky mother and sister of the killer, the glow in the dark skin, what was that about, what psycho madman glows in the dark? It gave me a few chuckles, the incest scene, brief and pretty much not shown still left a weird taste behind but I liked the twist that reveled itself towards the end and also the fact that the killer wasn't working alone but with someone who seemed to betray them all was a great add on. I really liked the Christmas spirit through the movie, the sorority house was really beautiful and made me miss snow and warm cider, decorations and the resiny scent of pine almost filled my nostrils. There were some cozy and creepy parts but they were broken up by chicks who acted dumb and strange madman behavior that was not explained at times. Overall a good horror flick but I'm still a bit split over it, saying that I'm glad I saw it, as it had a certain quality that fulfilled my horror flick appetite for that night.

If I had to give my own rating and really nit pick, I'd say it's a 3 ¾ star movie but I gave it a 4 because I enjoyed it more than I complained about it so there....

1 out of 5 stars A Christmas Clunker..........2007-06-03

My husband and I went to see this in the theater during the holidays and I LOVED the original. I enjoy horror movies , especially holiday-themed horror, and I wanted to like this movie. But we got up and left within 15-20 minutes after the movie started. It was extremely disappointing.

I highly recommend the original Black Christmas however---it's scary and atmospheric and it's one you don't want to miss!

4 out of 5 stars All-time classic.......2007-06-27

Old School will go down as an all-time classic comedy! Love Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell. There wasn't enough Will Ferrell, but that's what made his parts so great. Great movie! A must have for anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Animal House? Get outta here.......2007-05-23

Must be 40 yr olds that think animal house is some devine movie, The younger generation such as I(28)know that Old School is waaaaaaayyyyy better! no contest. i've seen both and I personally Think your a dumbass to think animal house even compares to old school, and someone should take your keyboard away and ban you from amazon! Later Losers.

I was looking at this mostly because I've enjoyed the actresses in this film's previous work. But this movie never game them a chance to act. I was lost through most of the movie as to why things were just now happening. The only noteworthy feature is that it has a True HD audio track.

3 out of 5 stars kinda lame.......2007-06-14

This movie drags... It does however have some good parts where you jump and a few gross parts but not enough...
To me its soft core horror.. def not gross like hostel or the saws, even wolf creek was better...
If its on cable its worth watching.... but dont buy it.

Nerds without computers may seem a contradiction in terms, but life was simpler back in 1984 and the geeks seemed to get along fine with just a slide rule and a plastic pocket protector. A variation on the fraternity-farce plot of Animal House, the picture celebrates the triumphs of a gang of geeks, led by Robert Carradine and a pre-E.R. Anthony Edwards, as they get back at a rival frat house full of jocks and preppies. Although the brains-over-brawn theme ought to be sure-fire, the movie gets by mostly on charm; there are very few explosively funny sequences. The supporting cast includes some surprising familiar faces, notably James Cromwell (Babe, L.A. Confidential) as Carradine's look-alike dad, pants hoisted proudly to his armpits. The director, Jeff Kanew (Gotcha!), went on to the 1991 private-eye belly flop V.I. Warshawski and has not been heard from since. --David Chute

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY A SPECIAL EDITION!!.......2007-05-21

This should have been done a long time ago. It's nice to have some real special features here besides the theatrical trailer. One of the best comedies of all-time! Maybe we can have some robster craws?

3 out of 5 stars DVD review .......2007-05-07

Overall, the panty raid edition dvd is pretty good. There are still a few gripes that I have with this dvd. First off, the cover art is horrible! I would be ashamed to walk in my local Walmart and buy this product just for the cover art alone. I guess that's why I ordered it online to save the embarrassment. Why don't they keep the original art work on these dvd's? Upgraded features, downgraded cover art. Secondly, this is my biggest gripe. Has anyone noticed how the past couple of releases of this movie have cut the scene of the nerds walking up the street to the house that Lewis discovered with the "for rent" sign in his hand right before they fix it up? I have seen this scene cut when it has been aired on HBO as well. Also, why in the world they put the t.v. pilot on this dvd, i'll never know. It was awful! I wanted my 30 minutes back. There were a few faces I recognized in it, like Sean Kanan from the Karate Kid 3. Lastly, the deleted scenes were terrible too. I can see why they cut them out. They also did not include all of the deleted scenes though, because if you watch the trailer, you will notice some other scenes that weren't in the movie or the deleted scenes section. The great things about this dvd are the documentary which was great and the commentary.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Comedy Classic.......2007-04-13

Once in a while, a film comes along which will be remembered for a long time after its original release. "Revenge of the Nerds" is one such film, and this great DVD edition has finally done this great comedy justice.

Starring Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Timothy Busfield, and a host of other fine actors, the viewer gets a first-hand look at college fraternity life.

Carradine stars as Lewis. Along with his friend Gilbert (Edwards), the two head off to the mythical Adams College to begin their careers in computer science. Upon arriving at campus, Lewis and Gilbert are ridiculed by the Alpha Betas, who are led by Stan Gable (Ted McGinley) and "Ogre" (Donald Gibb). They call Gilbert and Lewis nerds, and the label sticks with them. To make matters worse for Lewis and Gilbert, they are forced to move out of their dorm to make way for the Alpha Betas because they burned their own house down. The nerds are forced to live in the college gym. While in the gym, Lewis and Gilbert make some new friends, including Poindexter (Tim Busfield), "Booger" (Curtis Armstrong), Takashi (Brian Tochi), Wormser (Andrew Cassese), and Lamar (Larry B. Scott).

After failing to get accepted into any of the existing fraternities, the nerds decide to try to form their own, but Stan Gable vetoes their plans at the Greek Council. In order to be a recognized fraternity, they must have a national sponsor. So, the guys begin searching for one and they finally come across Lambda Lambda Lambda, who agrees to take them on a trial basis.

After the Betas and the Pis sabotage the tri-lambs' party, the tri-lambs vow revenge. A panty raid is planned for the pi house, while the jocks get a little something extra in their jocks. The news comes through that the nerds have been fully accepted as a tri-lamb chapter, which infuriates the Alpha Betas even more, and Stan will still not recognize the tri-lamb chapter. The nerds finally realize that the only way for them to get a fair shake is to win the homecoming carnival, so they could take over the presidency of the Greek council. With a strong showing in all three areas of the carnival, the tri-lambs succeed at winning, and are poised to take over the Greek Council, but at what cost? What will the Alpha Betas do now that they've lost control? Even Stan's girlfriend Betty Childs (Julie Montgomery) has left him for Lewis.

I've seen this movie many times, and it gets better with each viewing. Each scene in the movie is a classic, especially the panty raid on the pi's sorority house. The liquid heat scene is funny, too. The whole movie is loaded with scenes that will keep the viewer laughing throughout.

What makes this great DVD so special is the special features. There are several scenes which were deleted from the original movie, as well as a half-hour long segment in which the cast and crew talks about their experiences during the making of the movie, and how the movie became such a cult classic.

I give this DVD my highest recommendation. This movie was good before, but its gotten even better with the added features of this disc. If you were a fan of "Nerds" before, you'll be an even bigger fan after watching this great disc.

5 out of 5 stars An 80's comedy cult classic now better on DVD!.......2007-03-30

Two nerdy bestfriends Gilbert (Anthony Edwards) and Lewis (Robert Carridine) have just attended the university of Adams, the campus's jocks especially Ogre (Donald Gibb), Coach Harris (John Goodman), Stan Gable (Ted McGinley) and Burke (Matt Salinger) become hard on them treating them like outcasts. So Lewis and Gilbert with a group of other nerds (Timothy Busfield, Brian Tochi, Andrew Cassese. Curtis Armstrong, and Larry B. Scott) try to fit in with other fraternities on campus but get rejected until they decide to make their own fraternity to start a war with the jock infested Alpha Beta so they can prove that brains can win over brawn.

Hilarious comedy hit that gained a cult following since it's release, this is truly one of the 80's best comedies and rightfully so. The film is one of John Goodman's earliest roles before he was on "Rosanne", the movie also launched some cheap imitators and it's right up there with "Animal House" as the second best frat comedy ever! if you like a feel good comedy that is guaranteed to also make you laugh, then check out this one.

The special edition DVD has great remastered picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, "I'm a Nerd and pretty proud of it" featurette, a rare TV pilot for a "Revenge of the Nerds" TV show, deleted scenes, and the expected theatrical trailer.

Also recommended: "Animal House", "Porky's", "American Pie Trilogy", "Tommy Boy", "Dumb and Dumber", "Black Sheep", "There's Something about Mary", "Office Space" and "Back to School".

5 out of 5 stars Classic flick from the 80's finally gets the DVD treatment it deserves.......2007-03-07

There's just something about these comedies from the 80's that will always put a smile on the face of those of us who remember watching them for the first time back then, and hopefully, will also put a smile on the face of those of the younger generation who are discovering them now. "Revenge of the Nerds" is by far way up there among the better comedies from that decade. Sure, there's vulgarity here and there, but that doesn't take away from the humor and overall enjoyment. And one has to remember that the often un-politically correct aspect of many characters was common in the 80's.

And now this great film has finally gotten a DVD release that does it justice. The audio commentary by Jeff Kanew, Robert Carradine, Timothy Busfield and Curtis Armstrong is quite insightful and of course humorous, basically what one would expect. The "I'm a nerd, and I'm pretty proud of it" featurette has several of the actors talk about their experiences playing their roles. Nothing too spectacular, but definitely worth a look. The "Revenge of the Nerds" television pilot is certainly a nice feature, although mainly for novelty's sake. The 6 deleted scenes are "Stan Owes Nerd Money," "Gilbert Tells Judy How He Feels," "Tri-Lamb Vegas Convention," "Meet Uncle Meyer," "Chariot Race" and "Nerds Catch Jocks Destroying Their House." And finally, there is the trailer and a sneek peak of "Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise." The DVD presentation offers a fairly nice transfer (a little grainy in some parts, which I suppose we can live with) and good sound quality-make sure to turn the volume way up for the Talent Show scene.

What else is there to say? If you're a fan, go out NOW and get this. Long live the Nerds!

And as a side note, the DVD insert has an advertisement for the "One Size Fits All" special edition of "Porky's," soon to be released. Be on the lookout for that too.

What can I say? It's great getting back most of the fun teenage romp movies of my youth and finding H.O.T.S. available was a real fun blast from my past.
Seeing the movie unfold now that I'm older and anxiously awaiting the end where you find out what H.O.T.S. really stands for (no I won't tell you here but looking back at the time I was like DUH!!!) was fun
Thumbs up Amazon for bringing back all the movies of old that we all love.

This is by far no great cinematic accomplishment. However, it's a good movie to watch on a Saturday afternoon when there's nothing better to do. It's a funny, sexy teen sorority college movie with playboy playmates from '79 and should be taken as it is. In the beginning, the movie doesn't make much sense, but as it goes on...it's still really bizarre. To put it another way, I thought it was worth the $7 I paid for it, so if you're interested in a H.O.T.S. time, check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten slasher jewel!.......2006-11-03

It's New Year's Eve and college students are throwing a costume party on a charter train including Alana Maxwell (Jamie Lee Curtis). While everyone is trying to have a good time, there's a party crashing madman on board as he or she is out for blood.

Entertaining and scary low budget Canadian horror thriller that also stars popular magician David Copperfield and Ben Johnson as the conductor, this sometimes bloody slasher flick has decent acting mainly by Curtis and has good cinematography and atmosphere that gives the movie it's eerie mood. What i also liked about this movie is that it's one of the better post-Halloween/Friday The 13th films of the time and has a good ending, this is a must have for slasher fans and a remake will come soon.

This DVD has good picture and sound but the only extra is the theatrical trailer but it's still a good buy for your collection of horror movies.

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch slasher flick.......2006-10-26

While "Terror Train" may appear as your typical '80s slasher flick, it is anything but. Believable performances, gorgeous John Alcott (The Shining. Barry Lyndon) photography, a clever script, and nice direction from Roger Spottiswoode are contributing elements to the overall suspense that is created in this tale of a college graduation party held aboard a moving train. While everyone appears to be having a grand old time, several students are turning up dead. With all of the students wearing costumes, just who could possibly be the mysterious killer? Ben Johnson is his usual likeable self as the friendly, though stern, veteran train conductor, while Jamie Lee Curtis, Hart Bochner, and the relatively unknown cast turn in very nice performances. The quality in this suspense tale shines through.

3 out of 5 stars Terror Train.......2006-10-07

This film is another Halloween imitation, but you might find that there are certain pluses that make it worth getting-
1.) first and foremost, its a cheap DVD-$7.00 at FRY's.
2.) good atmosphere/visual style. the entire film is set at night.
3.) its set on a train, so theres a claustrophobic element.
4.) the killer dons five different disguises!
5.) the theme of magic and deception is played out entirely and adds to the quality of the ending (every slasher movie I've seen has a "letdown" for a ending, except this and the original SLEEPAWAY CAMP).

on the other hand....
1.) bland music.
2.)long streches where not much happens.
3.) not much gore or nudity (but I don't think thats a bad thing in most cases).
4.) I wouldn't think someone would go crazy over the pre-title prank.

overall, I thought terror train was good, but not great. an interesting note; check out the actor who plays the killer and then research him on the internet. If you read a few articles, you'll find out exactly why he was the PERFECT choice for this film!!

This good-natured college comedy launched the film careers of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, who have since enjoyed a cult following with their subsequent features (Super Troopers and Club Dread) and even made inroads to Hollywood (director Jay Chandrasekhar helmed the big-screen Dukes of Hazzard movie). Here the five Lizards play a quintet of clueless college guys pursuing women with varying degrees of success; the humor is broad without tipping too heavily into gross territory, and several moments are laugh-out-loud funny, especially the group's riffs on independent theater, and a missing phone number digit. Made for an astronomically small amount (and funded largely with credit cards), Puddle Cruiser was promoted largely through a screening tour of colleges, which is covered in the disc's accompanying featurette, "Rodeo Clowns." All five Broken Lizard members are also featured on some very amusing commentary tracks. --Paul Gaita

The premise is simple: Felix Bean, average college Joe, has the hots for campus beauty Suzanne, only to discover her boyfriend is a muscle-bound brute on the rugby team. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not terrible, not wonderful...........2007-01-30

This film is perfect for a feature Amazon.com should have: half-stars. 2.5 stars would be the ideal rating for this movie, as it's fairly average.

There are definitely the flashes of Broken Lizard genius in this film; certain moments are priceless. Overall, though, it's clearly an early film, as the pacing is off, the resolution leaves a little something to be desired, and several sub-plots are left dangling.
Still, it's easy to see why BL got the chance to make Super Troopers after this film, and why so many like the film. It definitely has its moments, and even if you don't like it, it's tough to really regret having watched it if you're a Broken Lizard fan. While it's not their best film, it's far from horrible, and definitely worth watching. Whether you buy it or not depends on your level of fandom, I suppose - but it's a good comedy to have on the shelf, to be sure.

1 out of 5 stars This Is A Chick Flick - And It's Not Funny.......2006-12-20

This movie is a limp-wristed romantic comedy! As a huge fan of broken lizard, I was looking forward to seeing this early work with fairly low expectations; Not expecting another super troopers but probably a low budget quirkily funny humor. And yet I was still disappointed. The amazing thing is there is no indiciation that the guys who made this movie would go onto do the hilarious off-beat comedies that they would subsequently create.

One major problem is that this film stars Steve Lemme, and he is clearly the weakest link among the five club dread guys. He may be the best-looking, but he's the least funny and probably the worst actor of the troupe. And his character is fairly unlikeable, a sort of bland and uninteresting twit, the typical lead in girlish date movies (which is what this is), made all the worse by Lemme's "serious" acting. In their other movies, the broken lizard guys did well to limit Lemme's weaknesses. In this movie, they highlight them.

Another problem is that the Freaky Reaky character, played by Eric Stolhnanske, is kind of lame and gets actively annoying at times. This is probably the worst character the Broken Lizard guys have come up with yet. It's this stock hippie stoner character who's supposed to be over the top, but actually just seriously grates.

A third problem is that they spend too much of this movie not telling jokes, but making an annoying, tepid, typical and uninspired romantic comedy. Chandrasekhar, Heffernan, and Soter are pretty good in their roles, but their screen time, especially that of the latter two, is way too small.

There are some funny bits, but there's nothing here that is as ridiculously funny as their other movies. One of the great things about Broken Lizard is that they've developed a fresh, distinctive, and original brand of comedy. That is not in evidence here. These jokes are stale and conventional. The bonus featurette, rodeo clowns, showing their tour of colleges to promote this movie is often more entertaining, but is not enough to recommend this purchase. Meanwhile the commentaries are frustrating, because these guys still seem to be suffering under the illusions that this is a good movie and that some of their crappy jokes are funny. It would be more interesting if they talked about things they learned while making this and how they applied those lessons to making their subsequent movies comedic successes.

4 out of 5 stars Warm, solid comedy with bits of Broken Lizard brilliance.......2006-10-30

You gotta stick with this one! I'll be the first to admit, the first twenty or so minutes threw me. I was expecting the usual over-the-top madness of the Broken Lizard boys, but this begins as a well-written, at times low-key campus life comedy. However, once the characters are developed the gang cuts loose--the courtroom sequence is my favorite scene from all of their films. And just seeing the (much younger) guys hanging out on frat couches is tons of fun.

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2006-08-30

First of all, I love Broken Lizard. My roommate and I would watch Supertroopers and Club Dread all the time. They're hilarious. So when we saw the group was releasing this movie, granted some of their earliest stuff, we were very excited. Thankfully, we used one of our free rentals at the video store because it was terrible. There were a few good moments in the movie but overall it just wasn't funny. I won't buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Puddel Cruiser - NO Super Trooper - NO Ishtar.......2006-08-20

This movie is beyond horrible - cant believe this is the same gang of super troopoers - this is exactly what it is. A campy movie that looks like college kids had some free time on their hands. Buy 2 copies of Super Troopers - and wait for TBS to air this about 4 am in 5 years.
