Two indisputable Elvis classics bolster this six-pack of Kingly films, with special emphasis on Elvis as race-car driver (three pictures feature this fave filmic occupation). Everybody loves Jailhouse Rock, the third movie in the Presley filmography. It's a kicky tale about a jailbird who learns to be a rock & roll singer in prison (a plot not at all crazy by later Elvis standards). The film catches Elvis in the freshness of being the New Thing, and his rave-up to the title tune is an exultant announcement that rock and roll just bashed down the front door of popular culture.

It Happened at the World's Fair jumps ahead five years, the Elvis formula set. Location shooting at the futuristic Seattle World's Fair of 1962 lends a quirky backdrop, and check out the young Kurt Russell (future inhabitor of the Elvis persona) kicking the King in the shins. Viva Las Vegas is the other consensus classic: EP plays a race-car driver waiting tables in Sin City, sparking big time with Ann-Margret. The two stars generate some heat, and the theme song has inspired many a road trip. No such trip will be inspired by Harum Scarum, a mad comedy set in the Middle East. Elvis is kidnapped while touring, and a lame spoof of Rudolph Valentino movies ensues.

It's back to the race track for the remaining pair. Spinout places the King in the direct path of three marriage-minded women, but he prefers his car and his guitar. Dumb plot, but the songs at least are agreeably rocking. Speedway has a slimmed-down Elvis and a groovy nightclub hangout, plus the ineffable Nancy Sinatra--there's some terrific kitsch value in this one. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars JAILHOUSE ROCK? A 5.... the rest.....??? silencio.......2006-02-08

With King Creole, Love Me Tender and Stay Away Joe - JAILHOUSE ROCK 1957 is Elvis Presley at his best. He declined the old musical tradition of MGM and insisted on a contemparary look - especially how the choreography should be executed.

In this film we see ELVIS PRESLEY at his very best. He was a stunning actor - much more prefer HIM to James Dean... It`s a shame he made more or less 33 forgettable films.... only a handful stands out and JAILHOUSE ROCK is the best. It isn`t a classic - it isn`t even great. But we have ELVIS - the KING - and that`s the best there is:-)))

One of the best directors of IMAX films, Stephen Low (Titanica) has always been a race fan. After obtaining permission from CART, a governing body of Indy car racing and Newman/Haas racing (a Championship team co-owned by Paul Newman), Low found his stars for Super Speedway: the racing Andrettis, father Mario and son Michael. Mounting cameras fore and aft on the Andrettis' cars, IMAX offers a better vantage point than an ESPN camera, at a superior grade of clarity. Add to that the excellent sound and you can "feel" the bumps on the asphalt as the cars zoom in and out of corners. The large format can turn a pit stop into a dramatic 12 seconds as we see the driver's eyes dart away from his cockpit for a few brief seconds. We watch Michael Andretti on oval tracks and exciting road courses going over hills and sharp turns. There's even a spin--probably staged--from an angle we've never seen before.

Although true race conditions were impossible (the camera is just too bulky), Low sneakily edits his film to stretch the imagination. On race day, several Indy cars drove alongside the camera car hours before the main event, passing and drafting each other with crowds whizzing past them. When edited with footage of the race, it feels like the real thing. Low takes a few off-beat choices in setting up his story. The first image is the biggest chicken you've ever seen. The last shot is a '50s car (lovingly restored during the film) racing through perfect golden foliage on an autumn day. It gives his movie of modern technology a wonderful sense of nostalgia. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Great behind the scenes documentary.......2007-04-05

This was a great documentary about what goes on behind the scenes in racing. The WVMHD looks great on my hi resolution computer monitor. Sound, action, and narration are all superb. Would recommend to anyone interested in knowing a little more about racing. Note: this film doesn't dig to deep into the technical side of car design or the underlying technologies, it merely scratches the surface.

5 out of 5 stars Monster sound effects.......2007-03-08

Want to put your home theater to the ultimate test? This is one magnificently produced DVD. None can match it's raw viceral sounds of the Indy cars on the track. Crank it up and the sounds will go around the room as the car races thru the road course. The Andretti men are classic and weave a good story of a car found in a barn then restore it and run it again. Simply amazing photography and sound effects.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but...........2002-08-05

As others have said, the DVD is great, and probably even better when seen in an actual IMAX theater. I think I found the making-of documentary actually more interesting than the feature itself. It was interesting to see the challanges of mounting a 70 lb IMAX camera on a car that was engineered and designed taking into account where every ounce is placed. Hanging 70lbs on it and still expect it to perform is quite a task.

I felt the audio was not accurately dubbed at some points. Too many/not enough gear shifts, mixing of two audio tracks with different engine RPM without a break in the video.

The biggest thing I had a problem with is the fact that it seemed several shots were sped up a bit to make it look more intense. Thats not cool. I hate when "World Scariest Police Chases" does it, but its expected from them. To have it done in a professionally done IMAX feature just is not acceptable. If you look at the on-car shots, watch Mario's head bouncing around. He doesn't have a natural movement- it moves to fast.

IMAX is supposed to bring the awe and adventure of things the normal everyday person will never experience. I feel there is a certain responsibility to bring it to us true, not buttered up.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT QUALITY THAT WILL PUSH YOUR SYSTEM TO ITS LIMITS.......2002-07-23

If you like race cars then you have to get this. An IMAX film, this documentary about racing in the CART league is of excellent quality. This really makes my sound system scream. You can literally feel the track surface when this is turned up. There is a making-of for the entire film, chapter by chapter, but unless you're the kind of person who can read a popular science from cover to cover you might not find it that exciting. Now that I have a 16x9 TV, I'll have to upgrade to the Mach II version of this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars extremely fun, even if you are not a race nut.......2002-04-30

If you love open-wheel racing, you must see this DVD. Even if you don't you will find it both entertaining and mind-blowing to watch. This IMAX production follows the Newman-Haas CART team from the pre-season testing to a real race during the season. Veteran driver Mario Andretti as well as his son Michael take to the wheel of a specially-rigged CART racing car that has an IMAX camera attached to it. The footage is spectacular!
At the same time we get inisghts into the technology side of racing, with visits to the Lola and Cosworth factories in England.
Mario Andretti's first race car was the Watson roadster, and as a special treat in this movie we see him re-united with the very beautifully restored car.
The movie is narrated by Paul Newman and feautures interviews with the Andrettis as well as Paul Newman's co-team owner Carl Haas.

Product Description

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened. ++++ DVD FEATURES: This officially licensed release from South Korea is All-Region NTSC Code 0 (playable worldwide) with Full Screen display and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in ENGLISH with optional (removeable) English or Korean subtitles. 5 out of 5 stars Stones shine amid the horror.......2005-12-01

Watching this after a screening of WOODSTOCK is a real study in contrast. ALTAMOUNT was always on my radar, growing up, and I had seen this in the theater back in the 70s, but revisiting it now ... what a revelation. There was a perception that WOODSTOCK had been an incredibly significant event in the counter-culture galaxy; a peace+love tribal congress. This concert came four months later, and because it was the west coast rebuttal to the upstate NY megafest, would be even better - better bands, better drugs, hipper hippies, freakier clothes, groovier vibes. The crowd shots are both revealing, and inevitably, terrifying as the claustraphobic crush tightens around the stage (crowd control plans, anyone?) and the HELLS ANGELS react like bears in cages being poked with sticks ... they erupt in an orgy of beatdowns and over-the-top violence. After all, that's what they do. Was anyone truly surprised? The various bands (Airplane, Santana, Dead, Stones) are merely ineffectual witnesses (with a good view) to what goes on, tho Marty Balin does get coldcocked during the Airplane set. I'm sure the musicians to this day feel fortunate that they did not get stomped on stage by the ever-growing legion of wild-eyed, wooly strangers standing nearby. (keep an eye out for the 300 lb. naked man careening through the crowd) If Woodstock gave us a pleasant marijuana buzz, Altamount grinds our collective molars with a bad blend of street meth and bootleg LSD. Man, am I glad I wasn't there.
All this being said, a good portion of this excellent documentary features the Stones backstage, in the recording studio, on the road, and performing with aplomb at a Madison Square Garden show. In '69, after all, they were in midseason form.

This compelling portrait of Las Vegas subculture stars Jesse Bradford (Bring It On, Clockstoppers) as Johnny, a teenager who aspires to be a racecar driver but gets stuck hustling on the Vegas strip. Speedway Junky centers around Johnny's friendship with Eric (Jordon Brower, Texas Rangers), a gay hustler who's in love with Johnny, even though he knows Johnny is straight. But the movie also captures snapshots of various fringe dwellers and people whose lives seem to be hitting a dead end, deftly drawn portraits that mix hope and despair in equal measures. The well-written script and strong performances from an eclectic cast--including appearances by Daryl Hannah, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, all of whom are excellent--make Speedway Junky more than a voyeuristic walk through the Vegas gutter. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Every dream has its price... From Executive Producer Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester) comes another compelling story of a teenage dreamer. Johnny (Jesse Bradford, Clockstoppers) has run away from home to pursue his fantasy to race cars--but he runs into trouble and out of money in Las Vegas. Gay street hustler Eric (Jordan Brower, Teen Angel) befriends Johnny and introduces him to his gang, including brash Steven (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Home Improvement) and charming Wilma (Tiffani Thiessen, Beverly Hills 90210). Johnny also meets Eric's surrogate mom Veronica (Daryl Hannah, Splash). As the two boys become close, they are confronted with a life-threatening situation involving drugs, money, and betrayal, and Johnny must decide if he has what it takes to follow his dream.

5 out of 5 stars A street-smart love story with a hot edge.......2005-11-18

"Speedway Junky" is a street-smart love story with a gritty, queer edge.
Executive Producer Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho, Tarnation, Good
Will Hunting, Elephant...) hands out another brilliant one here.

"Speedway Junky" is about a young tough guy, Johnny (Jesse Bradford), who
runs away toward North Carolina in hopes of becoming a race car driver. He
stops short in Las Vegas when he gets mugged for everything he owns.
Quickly introduced to life on the streets by Eric (Jordan Brower), a gay
hustler, and his crew (including stellar performances by television
hot-shots Tiffany Amber-Thiesen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas), Johnny's life
takes a pretty big turn with absolutely nothing predictable about it.
Problems with drugs, money, sex, queer love, the tough streets, and
following dreams come together to form a brilliant story.

Not only is the story intelligent, urgent, and fresh, but the cast is
phenomenal, (even if you're not a sucker for the 90's television stars),
the cinematography unforgettable, and the production is, once again, a Gus
Van Sant grand slam. This movie is excellent. 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Misses it's mark by a longshot..............2005-10-26

This movie is not that good. There are plenty of reviews that describe perfectly where this movie fails and where it succeeds.

Unfortunately; it fails more often than not.

There are good performances mixed with bad performances- cliches mixed with some truth- and a weak script with a few high points.

Overall, the film just isn't edgy or honest enough. The characters and performances (with the exception of Jordon Brower) just arent fleshed out realistically ...and others are just downright annoying.

One review states that this movie should be watched with the directors commentary on. I think I may give that a try....since I've already suffered through the film itself.

For everyone else out considering this movie...."SpeedWay Junkie" is worth passing on more than it is worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Viva Lost Vegas.......2005-02-05

Some have said this movie isn't "real" enough . . . but it needn't be. What it is, is a film with a lot of heart and if one approaches it as a fable, you'll find it works. It's a heartbreaker of a movie with strong, committed performances by everyone involved. Dreams of NASCAR collide with male prostitution, shattered dreams and street life in Vegas for a gripping, sometimes unsettling, beautiful little movie.

3 out of 5 stars Watch it with the director's commentary "on".......2004-10-03

I've never recommended a DVD solely for the director's commentary before, but I'm doing just that with Nickolas Perry's "Speedway Junky" (1999). The film itself is a totally predictable, sanitized view of Las Vegas street hustlers that contains two very good performances (one by someone you'd never expect), one terrible performance by a badly miscast former child star and a dual ending that is both misguided and, in the case of the tacked-on "happy" ending, insulting to the audience's intelligence. In all, "Speedway Junky" is a definite mixed bag; however, the DVD version is redeemed by an excellent director's commentary in which writer/director Perry provides an honest critique of his own work and gives an invaluable lesson on the process of making an independent film in today's Hollywood.

Jesse Bradford, who as a child gave one of 1992's best performances in Steven Soderberg's forgotten gem "King of the Hill," stars as Johnny, a teenage drifter who is hitchhiking from Los Angeles to Daytona Beach to join the Nascar circuit as a pit crew worker. To fund his journey, he takes a detour to Las Vegas, hoping to parlay his meager assets into enough money to complete his trip and then live on until he finds work. Unfortunately, within minutes of his arrival in town, he loses his money and all his possessions. His circumstances look bleak until he catches the eye of Eric (Jordan Brower), a gay teenage street hustler who falls in love with him at first sight and takes him in. Eric also initiates him into his seedy world and extended family, including his adopted "mother," an ex-showgirl and junky wonderfully played by Daryl Hannah, and various friends and "associates," including a shady fellow hustler named Steven (Jonathan Taylor Thomas). Although Johnny is straight, he and Eric form a strong friendship and bond which gets them both through the bleak days ahead, as Johnny vainly tries to earn money by hustling women and Eric's shady friends threaten their very existence.

The main problem with "Speedway Junky" is that it so predictable that the audience will know exactly how it is going end almost from the moment it starts. It is also extremely derivative of countless earlier, and better, films, including its obvious main source of inspiration--John Schlesinger's 1969 Oscar winner "Midnight Cowboy." As for the performances, they are uneven, to say the least. Jesse Bradford is an excellent young actor, but he overacts constantly and gives a totally annoying performance as Johnny, which isn't good when you are the film's hero. And poor Jonathan Taylor Thomas is simply horrible as the devious hustler Steven; in fact, after the shock value of hearing the clean-cut former child star use four letter words and graphically describe anal sex is over, his entire act becomes tiresome until late in the film when he is required to become vicious and then he is laughable. On the other hand, Hannah is wonderful as a faded beauty who has hit rock-bottom, and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Patsy Kensit have nice cameos as two of Johnny's potential female "tricks." And then there's Jordan Brower, who is simply wonderful as Eric, giving the kind of eye-opening, and wholly unexpected, performance that in a better, and more widely-seen, film would have brought him a great deal of attention. He is simply working at a level the rest of the cast, with the exception of Hannah, don't come close to reaching. In fact, his scenes with Hannah provide all of the film's best, and most realistic moments. (Take special note of Eric's "breakdown" scene which is beautifully rendered.)

As for the film's other problems, they are numerous and start with the weak screenplay, which ends by trashing the most sympathetic character in the film and then tacks on a happy ending that is unbelievable, to say the least. But don't take my word for it, just listen to writer/director Perry's own commentary, which leads me back to where I began. The commentary is extremely illuminating in that Perry explains every single detail of the production of the film and why he did the things he did. Why did he add a silly, and unnecessary chase scene halfway through? Why was Jonathan Taylor-Thomas cast in a role he was clearly wrong for? Why does he have a long and boring credit sequence at the beginning when it clearly hurts the flow of the film? And why the heck did he trash the one gay character in the film and not predict that audiences would hate him for it? For that matter, why did he include the ridiculous final scene? He answers all these questions and in the process teaches us all that even in today's independent film world, to get financing for a film you have to make the same kind of compromises that are necessary when working with the studios. It is an eye-opening lesson, to be sure, and one that all aspiring filmmakers would do well to learn from.

In all, "Speedway Junky" is a failure, and an extremely unlucky one at that. After sitting on the shelf for two years it finally received a theatrical run at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles starting on August 30, 2001. Eleven days later the twin towers fell and moviegoing did a nose-dive, ending whatever chance this film had of having a theatrical life. It's right where it belongs--on DVD, with its excellent commentary giving it a reason for existence. ** (out of *****) for the film and **** for the commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Objective/Non-Objective.......2004-03-10

This Movie took me by suprise actually. Even if it may be hard to believe the speed of progression of the events in the Movie, it does overshadow the less observed emotional requisitions of different worldy individuals out there in the world. If you ask me, it's even an uglier world than protrayed which holds to the idea of one persons acceptance and sould (mate) searching.

Elvis looks sleek and cool in Speedway, a decided improvement over the pasty indifference he displayed in his middle-era range of pictures. The movie itself is standard Presley formula, with the King again playing a race-car driver, this time in trouble with an IRS agent (Nancy Sinatra) over his taxes. (There's even a production number about taxes. Argggh.) On the plus side, a bunch of scenes are set in the Hangout, a Pulp Fiction-esque diner with booths shaped like cars and lots of dancers doing the frug. Nancy sings a cool-weird Lee Hazlewood tune, "Your Groovy Self," which should have been picked up by the Austin Powers folks. The plot reflects Elvis's real-life penchant for giving money and cars away, although it's mostly predatory manager Bill Bixby who causes the financial problems. As ho-hum as this outing is, you'll probably want one of Elvis's racing-stripe windbreakers after you see it. --Robert Horton

    5 out of 5 stars I love Elvis Preseley.......2006-08-09

Thank you for such fast service . I am very pleased with my purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars A cool movie!.......2004-07-18

ENTERTAINING film with a GREAT looking cover! LETTER-BOXED and restored! I love reading all of the negative reviews here on AMAZON...shows it takes all kinds of people to make a world. These films were made for ELVIS fans and to be ENTERTAINING...I have no idea how someone could even compare ELVIS and NANCY SINATRA to BEN and JENNIFER LOPEZ?

5 out of 5 stars Ok guys, This is a groovy, cool and sexy movie.......2004-07-15

If Austin powers were really in the groovy 60's. he'd be in this movie. with that said, yeah Elvis was embarrassed here and there but you can't get over how incredibly cool Elvis is in nearly every scene. Sinatra is a bit miscast cus Elvis blows her out of the water. but she adds a little somethin sweet here and there but Elvis is still the victor.

Bill Bixby you guys!! he is great in this movie as Elvis's manager and he is funny from start to finish and his chemistry with Elvis is the best i've seen from an Elvis movie (Ever) not overestimating.
"Your time hasen't come yet baby" is great and "let yourself go" is very cool and Elvis is enjoying himself as if he knows he's making cool look good again since pappa sinatra.
this is one of if not the best Elvis movie during the last 3 years of his films next to a dramatic and very surreal Change of Habbit.

5 out of 5 stars Your Groovy Self.......2004-07-12

OK, people, we are talking 1968 here. Granted, this movie isn't War and Peace, but was never intended to be. Elvis, by the time this movie was filmed, knew there was no chance of being considered a serious actor, although that was his dream.

The chemistry between Elvis and Nancy Sinatra is very evident...on and off the screne. Great friends and they had a blast making this movie. I recall Nancy saying they would ride around the MGM lot on a bicycle built for two when tour buses would come around and the heads would turn. That sounds like an enjoyable experience to me. The film is enjoyable, funny, and for its time, the racing scenes are action packed.

It doesn't get any better than Nancy singing "Your Groovy Self" with the blonde hair, [lightened around her face more for the movie] and those smokey, almond eyes. WOW!

BTW, Nancy was the only performer to have a solo song included on a Presley album. Impressive and enjoyable.

SPEEDWAY, is a fast paced, fun loving, Elvis flick that just happens to "tickle me". Sorry, couldn't resist.

    4 out of 5 stars A little classic.......2004-07-08

What makes these movies memorable is the innocence for there day, and the music that is still enjoyed worldwide today, Elvis always looked great in these films, although he never took himself seriously in this sort of flick, still managed to create some memorable momments for us as we where all growing up, Nancy sinatra isn't the most memorable of his co'stars but still adds a little sparkle to the formular, and this movie has been nicely remastered on to dvd with good sound, so if your an Elvis fan or just an admirer of his, if you can overlook some of the corny seens, it's still worth a view, and if your a collecter then you should have this in your dvd collection. regards Deke Rivers (...)

A hunka-hunka burnin' excitement comes your way in three Elvis Presley movie romps. Former Miss America Mary Ann Mobley teams with rock's renowned King for the Arabian daze and nights of Harum Scarum (Disc 1/Side A). Next, these beauts are made for watchin' as go-go-booted Nancy Sinatra plays an IRS tax collector and Elvis portrays a top World 600 stock-car driver in Speedway (Disc 1/Side B). Finally, Presley takes on a change-of-pace role in The Trouble with Girls (Disc 2), starring as the white-suited impresario of a traveling 1927 tent show that brings its novelty acts, lectures and musical harmonies to Radford Center, Iowa. Songs, romance, Americana and co-stars Vincent Price and Sheree North - that's the kind of trouble we'd all like to have!

    double sided disc?

I don't know... I don't like the idea of those discs.
They are bound to have more scratches, fingerprints and so on when you manipulate them.
When you put the disc back in the case, you will leave marks on the disc, unless you wear cotton gloves or something.

Apart from that, it's a GREAT deal, excellent price for 3 movies, if you don't already have them.
I'd give it 5 stars if the set was for 3 discs, and not 2 (one being double-sided)

    Enjoy!

    Amazon.com essential video

    Description

Super Speedway delves into the death-defying drama of Indy car racing and weaves together the stories of the masters of the high-speed track. "Super Speedway" puts you in the cockpit of the car at mind-bending speeds in excess of 230 miles per hour, capturing a unique experience that has until now been the exclusive domain of a tiny handful of professional drivers.
