You could think of this as a live-action Hong Kong version of a Japanese superhero cartoon (the best Power Rangers picture ever made) or as The Three Stooges Meet RoboCop. Either way, it's a mind-boggler. The action work is amazingly fast and dense, featuring giant transformer-style 'bots battling sexy flying lady 'bots who sometimes get their wires fetchingly crossed. Sally Yeh (the gold digger in Peking Opera Blues) plays the evil cyborg Maria, who runs a gang of crooks; her new boyfriend is the movie's Rotwang-Strangelove figure, a black-clad new-wave weirdo who believes that "perfect order is only found in machines." Tsui Hark and John Sham are the bumbling cops fighting to defend humanity. As usual when Tsui's involved, even when he isn't officially one of the directors, the film is promiscuously inventive. It's crowded with cool-looking junk and edited at such a breakneck clip that the action is often hard to follow. There are jokes about eating dog meat and a giant robot that swoops around the skyscrapers, hunting down pesky humans. The overall effect is of A Chinese Ghost Story gone high-tech, amped up to the point of no return. --David Chute

Mike Myers's first feature role without his Wayne's World wig is a performance at odds with the best interests of the movie. Myers plays a single guy who always manages to find something seriously wrong with each of his girlfriends. His new love (Nancy Travis), a butcher, may be the perfect woman, except for one thing: she might be a "black-widow" killer who prefers dispatching husbands with a sharp instrument. Robbie Fox's original script has a fine shape and strong, black-comedy material within it. But Myers creates unnecessary dissonance by playing a variety of characters (including an irascible Scotsman like the one he often played on Saturday Night Live) and accenting his skills as an improvisational comic (such as impersonating the soothing cadences of a massage therapist). It's not that Myers isn't funny doing all that, but it has nothing to do with the movie. Directed by Thomas Schlamme (Miss Firecracker). --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I love this movie.......2007-05-19
As with most good movies, the main characters might be the worm, but the backups are what reel you in. This movie is so very watchable, and Mike Meyers is actually funny (!!) in it, but for me, it's all about Anthony La Paglia and Alan Arkin. Sure, it's maybe three scenes in the entire movie, but they really steal the show.
This is a seriously underrated movie. Watch it. You won't regret it.
A slice of life.......2007-05-06
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self made poet, has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.
He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?
If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?
What a gem!.......2007-05-06
One of my favorite movies: unerringly charming and hilarious. It's a romantic comedy starring Mike Myers and Nancy Travis, obtrusively set in San Francisco. Myers spends most of the movie believing that Travis, his new love interest, may be a serial killer.
Stunningly, the movie flopped in cinemas. (This despite supremely competent writing and hysterical supporting work by actors such as Anthony LaPaglia and Amanda Plummer.)
I have heard that Myers was so despondent after its failure that he took TWO YEARS off of filmmaking in a somber funk.
Whoa! What a loss.
For my part, I've watched it maybe a dozen times and usually find something new to laugh at with each viewing. Even when I don't, this movie is guaranteed to paste a smile on my face for the rest of the day.
I have to say something else: I have never watched a movie that has made me want to move to a certain place so much as this one makes you want to move to San Francisco!
Pity that the powers that be show no signs of coming out with a "collector's edition" or anything like that. All you're getting here is the film itself, essentially. In case you're confused by what Amazon says up there, it's one of those disks where one side is fullscreen and the other is widescreen.
By the way, if anybody knows how Nancy Travis's character was able to afford that stunning loft apartment in the heart of San Francisco while working as an assistant at a butcher shop, please drop me a line. I do believe I chose the wrong career!
So funny!.......2007-03-08
This is one of my all time favorite Mike Myers movies! So funny!
so I married an axe murderer.......2007-01-28
The product is first rate. I love this movie, I hadn't seen this movie since school. I have had no problems with the products frow amazon.

Amazon.com essential video
Few actors invoking the title of their film as a line of dialogue have had quite the shattering effect that Christopher Walken does in this 1982, hour-long film by Jonathan Demme. As the painfully, painfully shy small-town fellow who comes to vivid life as the perpetual lead in community-theater productions, Walken's character breaks one's heart when he is asked to give his all yet again in another thespian triumph. This time, however, things are different: he meets his female counterpart in Susan Sarandon's equally retiring amateur actress. The two fall in love, a love most passionately expressed in the freedom of their stage lives, and Demme's film achieves a populist grace that fills out Kurt Vonnegut's original short story into street-level Lubitsch. One of Demme's most irresistible works, Who Am I This Time? is pure joy. --Tom Keogh
Description
Director Jonathan Demme, an Academy Award-winner, deftly weaves this endearing tale of love in bloom from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s story. Mix together a small town community theatre's shy leading man and the lovely telephone worker who moves into town and you have a perfect recipe for a delightful romantic comedy.
Academy Award-winners Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken star as the couple who discover that affairs of the heart on the stage may be a bit less complicated than continuing the romance off the stage.
Written By: Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Starring: Susan Sarandon (Academy Award Winner), Christopher Walken (Academy Award Winner)

My favorite all-time film.......2007-03-11
I first saw this short film on PBS in the early-80's when Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken were young (and so was I)! Written by Kurt Vonnegut, one of my favorite authors, it is like nothing any of these people have done before or since. Many actors become their characters, yet are shy off-stage. This story takes that idea to extremes in a touching way. Who Am I This Time takes place in a small town, and involves its community theatre, in which Christopher Walken's character is always the heartthrob leading man. Susan Sarandon travels with the telephone company, which brings her to this same small town for a few weeks. I hesitate to say much about the plot beyond this, so as not to give it away. Suffice to say, that the character development is superb, through the writing, the directing and the acting. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Walken, Sarandon, or Vonnegut, or even if you just want to see a great little film.
Amazing Acting.......2004-11-27
I have acted and directed for many years and just saw this film. It is an extraordinary piece that provides a demonstration of how acting works -- and it does so in a very short amount of time and in an engaging way. Walken is pure genius in his body language, facial expressions, use of his voice, everything an actor needs to perform well. I don't think I have ever seen (or ever will see again) such amazing acting. The story is cute and touching, but it is merely a vehicle for the stars to shine, which they do - brilliantly. See this movie and -- please, someone, put it on DVD.
Excellent Acting and teaching tool.......2004-07-15
I use this video in conjunction with a Shakespeare writing assignment I do in my English classroom. The students always mark this video as one of their favorites. They love the characters and it really helps them with their own performances--in acting and writing.
Bring this out on DVD!.......2003-05-27
A great, funny movie with some actors who went on to have amazing careers. I can't wait for the DVD. This is one of my favorite movies.
When Will It Be on DVD?.......2003-03-13
Someone once said that a good poem would "take off the top of your head." This little flick did that to me, when I was a young and impressionable student who stumbled across a PBS film festival, and I'd love to have the same experience again -- preferably with a DVD version of "Who Am I This Time?" Twenty years ago, I had no idea who Christopher Walken or Susan Sarandon were, but their understated yet passionate -- pulsating! -- acting left a big impression. Sit back, take a sip of a warm, fruity wine, and enjoy this little gem.

Description
Funny, poignant, and refreshing, THINGS I LEFT IN HAVANA sensitively explores the sense of loss felt by immigrants who discover that their dreams come with a high price. Three Cuban sisters come to Spain in search of a better life, but they must contend with exploitation and seduction as they pursue the capitalist dream. Forced by their aunt (Daisy Granados, well-known star of Fidel-sponsored Cuban proaganda features) to work in her fur store, they are each in turn seduced by Igor, a dashing gigolo who barters sexual favors for the freedom in America that exit visas provide.
Customer Reviews:
Leave this movie in Havana too!!.......2005-08-29
I don't think there is anything good I can say about this movie that about three sisters who move from Havana to live with a distant aunt in Spain who runs a fur shop. First, the story is about one sister who wants to act on the stage and I can't say why the other two are in the movie at all.
The lead character, Igor, Jorge Perugorria, creates false passports and has a quest in life to date women from Spain. He becomes romantically involved with Nena, the actress who does get to perform in theatre. And, he is romancing the friend of their aunt.
If this movie depicts some perspective on immigrants hopes and dreams, then I sure didn't see much of that. If the aunt had ideas of exploiting them, I can't see putting them to work in her shop exploiting. When she attempts to marry one off, that storyline remains weak. In other word, characters, other than the main two, don't have any development. Oftentimes you might just wonder "why are you here and how do you contribute to the film?"
The movie was neither poignant, nor humorous, nor moving! To add to that, the Spanish filmmakers tend to use derogatory language toward women. There are sexual situations not suitable for children, or me for that matter. The DVD has nothing more than the movie but trailers and scenes.
So, "Things I Left in Havana" is the movie that SHOULD have been left in Havana. ....MzRizz
Fascinating, Refreshing Cuban Cinema.......2004-05-08
By far the most interesting movie about the cuban immigrant experience out there on the North American DVD market, this movie is refreshing in its artistic clarity. I first saw this film in the 1997 Miami Film Festival and then bought it in europe only to learn about DVD region encoding and the imposibility of viewing it on a region 1 DVD player. By the way the zone 2 DVD is far superior (ie subtitles arent burned into the screen)To the region 1 DVD. That being said, it is a masterful tour de force of the immigrant experience and not to be overlooked.
"When you emigrate, it's best to forget your memories.".......2003-12-09
In the film "Things I Left in Havana", three very different Cuban sisters, Rosa, Ludmilla, and Nena (a budding actress) arrive in Madrid at the invitation of an aunt. The sisters arrive full of hopes and dreams for a bright future. They each want a 'nice life,' but unfortunately, their aunt has some different ideas about what that means. The aunt now thinks she has new employees for her business, and she even begins to plot an arranged marriage. As illegal aliens who've outstayed their visitor visas, the three sisters have little choice but to comply with their bullying aunt's demands.
Enter Igor--a fellow Cuban exile who has some shady business dealings and some playboy habits...
"Things I left in Havana" is really a charming, poignant, and refreshing film--while there are no earth-shattering revelations here, the film does have a unique perspective on immigration. The message here is that the sisters cannot return literally or figuratively to their homeland, and this is a bittersweet reality. The film sensitively explores the sadness and sense of loss felt by immigrants who often find out that their dreams come with a high price. The film has a great soundtrack, and all the acting was superb--displacedhuman

Seduction of Inga.......2003-12-02
Excellent nostalgiac film from early 80's, watch it to be seduced by this feeling and for a retro effect. Soft-core porn. If you're looking to simply get excited like the other reviewer, rent a porno instead.
It's sucks, don't buy it..........2000-10-31
I guess I was expecting humor and at least SOME nudity... but these movies barely had ANY and they both sucked. They had no plot, no good actors/actressess, no humor whatsoever, VERY cheap made (you can tell by the 8.00 price tag...), and deserves a PG-13 rating... Even though it was 8 dollars, I am still wanting my money back!! PLEASE don't buy this retarded movie!!

Action, comedy, sci-fi, and Maria -- it all works........2001-09-26
Imagine "RoboCop" as rewritten by the screenwriters of "Patlabor" and you've almost got your mind around this thoroughly whacked-out comedy/action hybrid courtesy of Tsui Hark (he directed; David Chung was apparently only responsible for the setting up of shots and the like).
A criminal gang uses a giant robot, Pioneer 1, to perform daring smash-and-grab raids on the city's banks. The police are hopeless, and the one man who has a clue (John Shum) is being marginalized in the department because his work makes the other cops look bad. He runs into a former member of the gang (Hark), the two become friends, and soon they're being chased by Pioneer II -- a robot that looks exactly like Hark's old childhood friend Maria (Sally Yeh), who now happens to be one of the gang leaders. If this sounds complicated, don't worry -- the plot is secondary to wild, inventive imagery, kung fu, things blowing up, and a climactic fight that is straight out of all your giant-robot wet dreams.
A great choice for HK lovers, aficionados of the strange, and anime fans as well. The slightly off-kilter subtitles and on-the-cheap FX only add to the fun. Get hooked.
Tremendous, Awesome, Bravo!!.......2001-06-22
With a blend of Sci-fi and traditional HK Art, this movie rocks. The movie features a plot that was not so much confsung as it was one that changed frequently. Sally Yeh who plays the cyborg is just as sweet as can be. Buy it you'll like it!
Real fun!.......2001-03-08
When I first had the opportunity to watch this movie some years ago I had the 'treat' of a terribly dubbed (into German)'comedy' version filled with lame jokes and stupid gags adapted to German humour (or at least what the distributor thought it would be - for example John Shum's character had been dubbed "Inspector Loony"). Somehow, still, the movie survived the treatment (alas, it is a comedy, and a low-key one at some times) and I always had a special feeling for it.
"I love Maria", like so many HK-movies, has a somehow confusing plot, several great action scenes, some very funny moments of cartoon-styled humour and some nice FX work (I prefer the special FX of "I love Maria" over those of "RoboCop"). Sally Yeh (of "The Killer" fame) gives a great performance (love that robot suit of hers), John Shum and Tsui Hark (the same) are funny to watch (I always liked Tsui Hark's excursions into acting).
The DVD is not spectacular concerning sound and picture quality but adequate, the subtitles are clear to read; short biographies of the principal contributors are added as a small extra. If you're into HK-movies this should definitely be a part of your collection.
I Love Maria (aka Roboforce).......2000-01-21
Not a bad film, with a lot of fx effects and a black comedy feel. This is an intense action-fantasy movie, with famous actors (Sally Yeh, better known for John Woo's The killer and the director Tsui Hark) and a very enjoyable pop soundtrack.
Wild Wild Robot Fun in Live Action.......1999-05-09
BUY THIS MOVIE! 'I Love Maria' is a fun, fast live action sci-fi romp with a decidedly 'Anime' feel to it. The plot is cool, but doesn't really get in the way and the effects are state of the art! The acting is comedic (whether it's meant to be is a mystery) and worth watching. This a fun film, to watch with a large audience and LOTS of popcorn.
